Raf’s life had been full of ups and downs. He had grown up in the foster system and he had bounced around from one lousy foster home to the next for most of his life. He hadn’t known that it could really be any different until Landon came into his life and suddenly he’d found himself with a brother. Hector and Maria were just like the rest, they were only interested in the money that came from having two foster children and Hector had made that perfectly clear. Raf had quite literally become his punching bag while Maria had preferred a more subtle approach. For her it was the psychological abuse that she was best at and Raf had felt sure that he would just have to tough it out until he aged out of the system and was able to take care of himself but it hadn’t worked out that way. He hadn’t known that he was a werewolf when he had triggered his curse and he had spent time trying to figure it out with just Landon for help until Dr Saltzman had found them and brought them to the school. Raf knew that he owed him, Hector and Maria had been trying to exorcise him when Dr S had showed up but thankfully things had settled down since then and he knew that he would take this life over the one that he had been living before any day. “Don’t forget that they’ve been doing magic a lot longer than you have. From what I’ve seen you’re a natural, you’ll probably surpass them in no time,” Raf assured her. He knew that Hope really was a gifted witch, he had seen some of the things that he was able to do and even though he didn’t know a lot about magic he knew that the things she did were incredible. As Hope asked if he really thought that she was the strongest person he’d met, Raf nodded. “Of course. You know I wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t mean it,” he said, a smile forming on his face as he looked over at her. He had always done his best to be honest with the people around him after hiding the truth about what he was going through for so long and Hope was no different. She was his best friend at the school and he knew that he would never lie to her. “I think the fact that you’re able to admit that just goes to show that you are strong. You do so much for everyone and you always put them first. That’s true strength.” That was something that Hope had in spades and he knew that that was never going to change. “All the training as really paid off, you’ve definitely kept me on my toes,” he admitted. He wasn’t used to having such a good sparring session with anyone and he was grateful that Hope was always up for helping him train. As Hope agreed that she was a good teacher, Raf rolled his eyes playfully before nodding as she spoke again. “I do and I appreciate that more than you could ever know.”Raf couldn’t deny that he was pleased that Hope was thinking about sticking around at the Salvatore School for college as well and he felt a knowing smile form on his face as she said that she could ask Josie before adding that she could also add MG and everyone else too. “You really like her, don’t you?” he asked, unable to deny that he was happy for her. He had seen how happy Josie made her whenever they were around each other and Raf was glad that she had found someone special. “Hopefully they’ll decide to stick around as well, it would be great to have everyone around for another four years.” Raf had never thought that he would be the kind of guy who would end up going to college, throughout his time in foster care he had found himself just hoping to age out of the system and figure things out from there. Now he had options and he knew that he wanted to make the most of them with the people he cared about right there with him. “Maybe I should ask Ela too,” he added, his smile returning as he thought of the dragon. The night ended up taking a turn that neither of them had expected and even though Raf did his best to fight the vampire off he knew that it wasn’t going to work. The vampire was far too fast and far too strong and Raf just hoped that Hope would manage to get away. He heard her say no when he told her to run but it didn’t really register until suddenly the vampire was thrown off of him, the pain winning out over everything else in that moment. Raf could feel that his healing was trying to kick in but he was still in agony and he could hear Hope talking to the vampire but he couldn’t bring himself to focus on the words. Right now it was all he could do to stay conscious but before he knew it Hope was at his side and he took in a shaky breathe as she applied pressure to the wound and told him to stay with her. “I’m trying,” he said, his hands clenching at his sides as another wave of pain washed through him. He wanted to say no as she held her bleeding wrist to his lips, wanted to tell her that he would heal on his own, but the pain was worse than anything that he had ever felt outside of a full moon transformation and he knew that turning her down would be foolish. Instead he forced his hands to unclench before pulling her arm closer to him and drinking. The taste was awful, a metallic coppery taste that he had come to recognise all too well after the beatings he had endured at the hands of various foster parents but this time was different and he could already feel it starting to heal him. Letting go of Hope, he took a few deep breaths before pushing himself up into a sitting position. “Is he dead?” he asked, not sure how much time they had before they would need to move. Don’t forget that they’ve been doing magic a lot longer than you have. From what I’ve seen you’re a natural, you’ll probably surpass them in no time, Of course. You know I wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t mean it, I think the fact that you’re able to admit that just goes to show that you are strong. You do so much for everyone and you always put them first. That’s true strength. All the training as really paid off, you’ve definitely kept me on my toes, I do and I appreciate that more than you could ever know.
Hope's eyes moved back to Rafael as she processed his words before she released a soft hum. She had never thought of it that way before, she was always pushing herself to perfection because she always felt like she needed to make her family proud, but she didn't think of it the way that Rafael had. "I've actually never thought of it that way before. I'm glad you think that way of me, Raf. I really appreciate you telling me all of this." She appreciated his reassurance and the fact that he seemed to care so much about her. She was eternally grateful that they were best friends. She really appreciated having him in her life. He instantly made things better for her, so of course, she was grateful. "You know, you're really good at reassuring people." Hope said with a gentle smile forming on her lips. "Thank you, Raf." She sent Rafael a reassuring smile as she listened to him. "It's the least that I can. Plus, I'm not going to do be doing much, just helping you recognize how strong you are, s'all." Hope added a moment later with a soft smile forming on her lips as she kept her gaze focused solely on Rafael.
You really like her, don’t you? Hopefully they’ll decide to stick around as well, it would be great to have everyone around for another four years. Maybe I should ask Ela too,
There was a blush already starting to cover her cheeks at Rafael's question. She scratched the back of her neck sheepishly, knowing that she wasn't doing well at covering her interest in Josie. "I..." Hope trailed off, her eyes still focused ahead as she felt her heart do a somersault just at the thought of Josie. "I do." She admitted, knowing that she wouldn't be able to hide it from Rafael. "How can I not?" Hope added a moment later with a soft chuckle falling from her lips. "I hope so, too." She couldn't help the grin that formed on her lips when Rafael mentioned asking Ela, too. "You know, you definitely should." Hope encouraged with a soft chuckle falling from her lips. "You really like her, don't you?" She repeated Rafael's earlier question with a teasing look on her face.
Hope watched Rafael drink from the open wound and sighed in relief when he seemed to get better, her blood helping speed up the healing process. Hope glanced over her shoulder at the unconscious man before she shook his head. "Unconscious." She revealed as she pushed herself up, her wound already healed up. She extended her hand out for Rafael to take so she could help him stand up. "C'mon, we need to get out of here." She urged as she glanced over at the unconscious man, knowing that they didn't have long before he woke up.

Raf knew just how easy it was to only see flaws when you compared yourself to other people. He was guilty of that himself at times but being at the Salvatore School was slowly making him get better at not seeing himself that way. He had spent years being made to feel like he wasn’t good enough and like no one wanted him but it was different at the school. For the first time he didn’t have to worry about suffering at the hands of someone else, he was safe and surrounded by others who were like him. He hadn’t known what had caused his spurts of anger before but now he knew that it was and he was doing his best to keep it under control. Dr S had been great at helping him but the person he leaned on most was Hope and he knew that he wanted to be there for her in return when he had the chance. “It’s easier to see it that way when you’re looking from the outside in, don’t worry,” he assured her, offering Hope a smile as he looked over at her. “I do. I’ve seen some of the things you can do, you’re incredible,” he added. He was constantly in awe of everything that Hope was able to do with her magic and he hoped that she would find a way to see that as well. “I never used to be, I guess I’ve had a lot of practice with Lan,” he chuckled. From the moment Lan had moved in with them Raf had taken it upon himself to protect the other boy and reassuring him at times had played a part in that as well. As Hope spoke again, Raf’s smile returned. “You might not think it’s much but I appreciate it. I knew how to fight before I came here but never at this level,” he admitted. It was a way of letting all of the anger, frustration and energy out of his system and it was an outlet he hadn’t known he’d needed until he had found it. The way Hope blushed at the mention of Josie was enough to make a smile form on Raf’s face once more and he couldn’t deny that it was quite cute. He knew that Hope had been through a lot with the age up and so had Josie. They were both his friends so naturally he wanted them both to be happy and they seemed to make each other feel that way so he really was happy for them. “She is someone it’s impossible not to like,” Raf agreed before nudging Hope’s arm gently with his own. “For what it’s worth it seems like she really likes you too.” He knew that he wanted it to work out for the two of them and something told him that they would both do whatever they had to in order to make that happen. As Hope turned the question back around onto him, Raf rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “Yeah, I do,” he admitted, knowing that he didn’t need to worry about trying to hide the truth from Hope – he could tell her anything. “I haven’t liked anyone since Cassie and it’s a little crazy because Ela is a dragon and I’m just a regular werewolf but she’s amazing and I can be myself around her.” It had been such a long time since he had last felt this way about anyone so he couldn’t deny that he was worried about screwing it up but he knew that he just had to trust that he wouldn’t do that. It really was strange how quickly things could change and before Raf knew it he was drinking from the wound on Hope’s wrist and straight away he could feel it starting to help. “Thank you,” he said sincerely, knowing that Hope hadn't had to offer him her blood to help him heal and could have just let his werewolf healing do its thing. Nodding as Hope said the vampire was unconscious, Raf took her outstretched hand and got to his feet. “You don’t need to tell me twice,” he said, wincing as he put pressure on his right leg. He had heard one of the bones break but between his healing ability and Hope’s blood he could already feel it starting to heal itself so it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as it could be. “Let’s get out of here. Shall we head back to the school or do you want me to walk you back to your place?” he asked, knowing that his wounds would have healed before they got to either place so it didn’t really matter too much. Together they headed away from the vampire as quickly as they could but it wasn’t quick enough. Raf looked around them every so often to make sure that there wasn’t any sign of the vampire and they took a route that should have ensured that they wouldn’t be followed but ten minutes later the vampire still caught up to them once more. A twig snapped behind Raf which was the only sign that someone was near. Before he could even turn around Hope was knocked out of the way and Raf turned in time to meet the vampire’s eyes as the vampire’s hands found either side of his head as he breathed out a quick “Sorry kid,” before snapping Raf’s neck. By the time Raf’s body hit the ground the light had already gone out of his eyes and the vampire quickly snapped the photo he needed as evidence of the kill before speeding off out of sight. I knew how to fight before I came here but never at this level,
Hope felt a small smile tug on her lips as she processed Rafael's words. "Yeah, actually. You might be right on that one." She said in a soft voice. It was a good way to think of things, actually. She can't remember when was the last time she had actually gone soft on herself and didn't expect perfection with every little thing that she tried. No one perfected magic in a day or perfected their werewolf abilities right away. She had all the time in the world to do that. She was quiet as she listened to what Rafael had to say, nodding her head in an understanding manner. She gave his arm a reassuring squeeze to assure him that she was going to be there by his side the whole time.
She is someone it’s impossible not to like, For what it’s worth it seems like she really likes you too. Yeah, I do, I haven’t liked anyone since Cassie and it’s a little crazy because Ela is a dragon and I’m just a regular werewolf but she’s amazing and I can be myself around her.
"Isn't she?" Hope's lips stretched to form a soft smile as they talked about Josie. Her eyes moved back to Rafael when he told her that from what it seems, Josie really likes her too. There was already a blush starting to form on her cheeks as she sheepishly rubbed the back of her neck. She wasn't that good yet at talking about her feelings and right now, she was too shy to even find the right words to describe what she was feeling right now, but it definitely seemed to lift a lot of weight off her shoulders to know that Rafael had a feeling Josie felt the same way for her, too.
Hope's eyes softened as she continued listening to Rafael as he spoke about Ela. "This is seriously so cute." Hope cooed, almost. There was definitely a smile already present on her lips as she kept her eyes fixed solely on Rafael. "I'm really happy for you, Rafael. You deserve to be happy." She said in a soft voice, her eyes still on Rafael.
Thank you, You don’t need to tell me twice, Let’s get out of here. Shall we head back to the school or do you want me to walk you back to your place?
"Of course." That was Hope's response when Rafael thanked her for healing him. "It shouldn't affect you at all. My blood, I mean. Just..." Hope bit down on her bottom lip momentarily as she peered up at Rafael. "Let's not die, okay?" She breathed out a chuckle to hide the fact that she was anxious about that. If Rafael were to die, he'd come back as a Hybrid and Hope wasn't so sure Rafael would ever want something like that. "To the school, yeah. I just need to make sure you get back safely." Hope said with a quick nod of her head following, her lips stretching to form a brief smile.
Hope remained on guard and from what she could see, Rafael was also on guard as he continuously checked his surroundings and it almost felt like they were safe but that was shattered when Hope heard a twig snap and before she knew it, she was knocked out of the way and before she could gather her bearings, it was already too late.
"No!" Hope's eyes widened as she watched the man snap Rafael's neck. Hope pushed herself up from the ground, but she was already too late.
Rafael was dead and the man had managed to get away.
Hope rushed over to where Rafael was, placing her hands on his cheeks. "Raf, no..." There was no light in his eyes anymore. He was gone.
But only momentarily.
Hope's worst fear was playing right before her eyes.
Hope didn't leave Rafael's side as she propped his head on her lap, waiting for him to awaken in transition. "I'm right here with you. It's going to be okay." Hope whispered, her eyes still on Rafael, watching him as she waited for him to wake up.

“Sooner or later you’ll start believing in yourself more but until then I’ll keep reminding you of how great you are,” Raf said gently. Hope was incredible, there was no denying that, but he had seen it time and time again that she just didn’t see herself that way. He knew that being a part of the Mikaelson family had to bring a lot of pressure with it but she wasn’t her dad or his siblings, she was her own person and he knew that eventually she would find her own way. Either way he knew that he was always going to be there for her and it would be the same with Josie and the others too. Hope had so many people who cared about her and believed in her and for the first time in his life Raf had that too. He had never really known what it was like to have a proper family but he finally felt like he’d found one at the Salvatore School and he knew that he wouldn’t give that up for anything in the world. As Hope squeezed his arm Raf couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face and he gave her hand a gentle squeeze in return. “She is. So are you when you give people a chance,” he nodded. He knew that it wasn’t always as easy for Hope but she had let him in and he was truly grateful to her for that. She was one of his best friends and he wanted her to be happy more than anything so he was glad that she and Josie had finally figured things out. “You don’t need to be embarrassed. I’m glad you’ve found someone who makes you this happy,” he added sincerely. This was a side of Hope that he wasn’t used to seeing and he couldn’t deny that he liked it. Even though Raf had told Hope not to be embarrassed about liking Josie, as talk turned to Ela it was Raf’s turn to feel a little embarrassed. “Thank you, that means a lot to me,” he admitted. After he accidentally killed Cassie he hadn’t felt like he would ever deserve to be happy again but he knew now that it had been a mistake, something that his werewolf gene had caused to spiral out of control, and what had happened was something that he had learned to live with but now he knew that he needed to find a way to let himself be happy too. Getting to his feet, Raf nodded as Hope said not to die. “I’ll try not to,” he assured her. He knew that they needed to get as far away from the vampire as quickly as they could so the two of them set off and Raf’s expression softened as Hope said that she wanted to make sure that he got back to the school safely. “I’ll be fine, don’t worry,” he promised. He would be lying if he said that he wasn’t shaken up by what had happened but he had never been the kind of person who ever liked to show weakness so he knew that he needed to keep it together at least until he got back to the school. He had known about the hitlist before, Hope’s name had ended up on it too and she had triggered her curse by protecting herself and stopping the person who was going after her from killing her. Others had found their names on the list too so Raf knew that he shouldn’t be surprised that his name had ended up on there but he had been doing his best to keep his head down and not let anyone outside of the school know what he was. Somehow the truth had still ended up getting out, though, although there was a part of him that knew that even his association with the school could have made him a target to anyone who knew the truth about the students who went there. Either way he knew that it didn’t really matter, his name had ended up on the list and Raf kept his guard up as they headed back towards the school from the Grill. Unfortunately they weren’t careful enough, though, and before Raf even really knew what was going on his life was brought to an end far too soon. That perhaps should have been the end of the story and it would have been had it not been for the fact that he had died with Hope’s blood in his system. As it was some time later there came a sharp intake of breath and Raf’s eyes opened once more. For a moment he was disoriented but he soon realised that his head was resting on Hope’s lap and his gaze came to rest on her as he propped himself up on his elbows. “Hope, what happened?” he asked although the moment the words left his lips a vision came flooding back to him, the face of the vampire that had attacked them before. Raf could already feel that he was different and his eyes went wide. “The vampire. H-he killed me, didn’t he?” he breathed, stumbling over the words as he tried to process what that meant. Hope felt a small smile tug at her lips as she processed Rafael’s words. ”Thank you, Raf. That means a lot to me.” She was really grateful that she had Rafael in her life. He was already making a huge difference in it. She was glad she had trusted her instincts and had allowed Rafael in. She had a feeling that he was a good guy and decided to give him a chance to get close to her, to befriend her and it was one of the best decisions she’s ever made. She was certain of that now. Hope’s blue eyes lifted to settle on Rafael, his words making her brows quirk up before she released a soft chuckle. ”I think I’m content with you and the others. I really don’t need any more friends.” She said with a grin resting on her lips. It wasn’t easy for Hope to socialize because most people knew of her family and they all kept a safe distance from her and also because she didn’t trust people easily. She knew her family had enemies and it was quite easy for them to seek her out to have their revenge. She didn’t want to be manipulated by anybody,m didn’t want to become her family’s weak spot. Well, more than she already was, that is. ”Oh, I’m not embarrassed. I’m just… shy.” Hope’s shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug, her same shy smile still visible on her lips. ”Of course.” Hope said with a soft smile resting on her lips. She was more than happy to be there for Rafael as long as he wanted her by his side.
Hope thought that they had managed to get away from the vampire, but she was completely wrong and before she knew it, the man had snapped Rafael’s neck and she couldn’t do anything to stop him. She couldn’t do anything except wait for Rafael to wake up in transition. She was far from prepared when his eyes eventually snapped open. ”Hey, Raf.” Hope greeted, her voice far from stable as she met his eyes. When he asked her what had happened, her lips parted and closed a few times as she struggled to form a sentence that was enough to explain what had happened to Rafael.
”He…” Hope trailed off and Rafael finished the sentence for her. Her heart broke for him even harder. He deserved so much better. He had suffered for so long and now, he had to put up with the fact that he was a hybrid, too.
Hope dipped her head down regretfully and nodded her head, confirming Rafael’s suspicion.
”I’m sorry, Raf.” She apologized as her blue eyes moved up to settle on Rafael once again. The sound of his voice breaking like that… It was going to stick with Hope for a long, long time. ”I’m so sorry, I…” Hope was aware that her apologies weren’t going to make much of a difference. ”You died with my blood in your system and now, you’re a hybrid.” Hope explained in a soft voice, knowing that Rafael must be confused. ”You’re not just a werewolf anymore, Raf.” She added a moment later, her blue eyes still focused on him. ”You’re a vampire, too.” Hope finished explaining, her voice still soft. ”But you’re in transition which means you need to drink blood. I know it sounds gross but… It will help you feel better. You’re feeling thirsty right now, aren’t you?”

Raf had spent the last few years of him life searching for something that most people were lucky enough to have been born into - a family. His had been taken from him a few months after his tenth birthday and he had been on his own ever since. His parents hadn't been perfect and his upbringing had been rough to say the least with all of the arguments and each of his parents moving out every few months but he had never doubted that they had loved him. He had never known that they were his adoptive parents until after they had died and he overheard two social workers talking but it had helped him realise that family was so much more than blood and he had found his true family at the Salvatore School. Hope was a big part of that, he knew that it hadn't been easy for her to let him in but they had hit it off and he knew that he wouldn't want to be without her now. "It's the truth," he assured her although he knew that it wasn't always easy for a person to see that directly. "In that case we're lucky to be a part of the inner circle," he grinned. He knew that Hope didn't trust people easily and he didn't blame her for that but she did have people around who cared about her. "You don't need to be, the two of you are good together." That was something he had known from the start and he saw it every time she and Josie were together. What was meant to be an afternoon training with Hope and hanging out with her suddenly took a much more sinister turn and Raf wasn't too sure what was going on as his eyes finally opened. The way Hope's voice sounded as she spoke to him was enough to fill him with dread before he even remembered what had happened and the way Hope struggled to find the words to explain didn't help either. Hope was usually so confident but not right now although he soon realised why as the memory came flooding back to him. His own voice broke as he said the words out loud and he realised that his hands were shaking. This wasn't how his life was meant to go but then again he had learned a long time to expect the unexpected. As Hope started apologising, Raf shook his head. "Hope, none of this is your fault," he assured her as he pulled her into a tight hug. "You're not the one who did this, you were only trying to help and if you hadn't he would have caught up with us anyway," he said as he let her go. "Better undead than regular old dead, right?" he asked, trying to put a positive spin on it although he wasn't sure whether he was trying to convince Hope of that more or himself. As she asked if he was feeling thirsty he realised that she was right and he nodded. "Yeah, I am," he nodded before getting to his feet and holding a hand out to Hope so he could pull her to her feet as well. "Let's do this," he said, taking a deep breath to steady himself. "Does it have to be fresh or will blood bags from school work?" he asked, unaware that it actually had to be blood from Hope or a doppelganger. HOPE MIKAELSON

Hope’s lips stretched into a grin at Rafael’s words before she nodded her head in agreement with his words. ”Yeah, I guess you guys are.” She said in a teasing voice as she looked over at Rafael, watching him with a half-smile resting on her lips. Hope wanted to muster up the courage to talk to Josie, she wanted to tell her of the fact that she liked her romantically and not just as a friend. ”Thank you, Raf. So do you and Ela.” She added a moment later, her sincerity visible in the tone of her voice.
Hope’s eyes slowly moved to settle on Rafael as he assured her that none of this was her fault. She let out a soft sigh of relief when he brought her forward in a hug, her own arms wrapping around him not long after, too. When Rafael pulled away from the hug, she looked at him again, her eyes scanning his features, looking for something, although she couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was that she was looking for. Her features relaxed considerably and her lips even pulled to form a soft smile. ”You’re taking this very positively.” Hope pointed out, her eyes still focused solely on him. If she had activated her vampire side, she definitely wouldn’t be taking it so positively like this because there was so much that Hope wanted to achieve. ”You don’t have to act strong and positive if you don’t actually feel that way, Raf. It’s okay.” Hope gave his hand a gentle squeeze to let him know that he could be his true self with her and she would never judge him for it. She would do everything she could to help him. ”Okay,” Hope took Rafael’s hand in her own and got herself up from the floor. ”Well, actually…” Hope trailed off for a moment as she stood in front of Rafael. She had to tip her head back a little bit to be able to look at him better. ”That’s where you’re different from other vampires.” Hope lifted her hand to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, her blue eyes still focused on Rafael. ”You need to drink my blood.” Hope revealed with a quick nod of her head following. ”Or, the blood of a doppelganger, but that one is really tricky, so…” Hope trailed off, her lips stretching into a brief smile. ”We’re gonna have to do with my blood, instead.” Hope’s voice was soft as she spoke. ”Are you okay with that?”

Raf had moved around so often and he had grown used to having to make new friends all the time. The one thing he had never known was how long he would end up staying where he was but now things were different. He had a place where he belonged and being at the Salvatore School meant that he got to stay in Mystic Falls for as long as he wanted. "You're stuck with us," Raf grinned. He knew that Hope didn't like letting people get too close to her and that was definitely something that he could understand but she had people around who cared about her, they both did, and it was something that Raf knew better than to take for granted. "Thanks. Hopefully it will work out for both of us." He wasn't even sure if Ela liked him as anything more than a friend but he really hoped she did. How they had gone from talking about the people they liked to this Raf wasn't sure but he knew that he needed to find a way to get his head around what had happened and he knew that if there was anyone who could help him with that then it was Hope. Raf had never liked showing any kind of weakness, he had learned a long time ago that it could be used against him if he did, but with Hope he knew that he could be himself and if there was anyone that he could be honest with it was her. He had meant it when he had said that he didn't blame Hope for what had happened, without her he would have died and stayed dead and that was something that he was grateful to her for. He wasn't surprised that Hope was able to see through the act, though, and he let out a shaky breath. "I never thought this would happen and to be honest I don't feel strong or positive right now but what's done is done so I need to find a way to live with it," he said, quickly blinking away tears that started stinging his eyes before taking another breath to try and steady himself and lifting his gaze to meet Hope's once more. "Besides I have you to help me, right?" he asked, knowing that Hope wouldn't abandon him now. He knew that it would take him a while to get his head around what had happened but he had people around him who cared and he knew he needed to remember that. Helping Hope to her feet, Raf's eyes widened in amazement as she said they would have to use her blood. "What? No! You're my best friend, I'm not going to drink your blood!" he exclaimed. "There must be another way," he said, his eyes searching hers for a moment and his heart sinking as he realised that she had meant it when she had said that it had to be her blood or the blood of a doppelganger. "Promise me you won't let me hurt you?" he asked, knowing that he would never forgive himself if he did. HOPE MIKAELSON

I never thought this would happen and to be honest I don't feel strong or positive right now but what's done is done so I need to find a way to live with it,
Hope nodded her head in an understanding manner. She gave Rafael's hand a gentle squeeze and when she noticed the way his eyes were getting teary, her heart broke for him. Hope brought him in for a hug as she rubbed his back gently. "It's going to be okay, Raf. I know it's scary right now and definitely overwhelming, but I'm going to be there for you every step of the way, okay? I have so much faith in you and I know that you will get through this." Hope said in an assuring voice. She allowed the hug to drag out for a few moments before she eventually leaned away from Rafael, her eyes settling on him as soon as she was away from him.
Besides I have you to help me, right? What? No! You're my best friend, I'm not going to drink your blood! There must be another way, Promise me you won't let me hurt you?
"You're right. I'm not going to let you go through this alone." Hope assured him in a gentle voice as she sent him an assuring smile. She wasn't going to let him go through any of this on his own. Rafael had been there for her when she first turned into a wolf and it was something she was never going to forget.
"Raf, it's okay." Hope assured him in a soft voice as she peered up at him. Hope understood his concern and she would have reacted the same way, too. When Rafael asked her to promise him that she won't let him hurt her, she offered him a gentle smile and a quick nod of her head. "I promise." She assured him in a soft voice. "It's going to be okay." Hope added a moment later. "I know you won't hurt me." She added a moment later. She had so much trust in him. She knew that he would never hurt her.
Hope lifted her hand to her mouth before she bit down on her wrist, just deep enough for her to bleed. "Here. Take as much as you need." She moved her bleeding wrist closer to Rafael, encouraging him. "I trust you, Raf."

Raf was so used to always having to put on a brave face, being vulnerable around anyone wasn’t something that he had done for a long time but in that moment a few tears escaped and started rolling down his face as Hope pulled him in for a hug. The only person to blame for what had happened was the vampire that had attacked them, it wasn’t Hope’s fault and it definitely wasn’t his either. He knew that it was going to take a while for what had happened to sink in but now he knew that he needed to complete the transition otherwise he really would die and that wasn’t what he wanted. The way Hope rubbed his back was enough to remind him of the way his mom used to do that when he was younger and it soothed him a little. “I’ll get through this because I have you and the others around me. You guys are my family.” That was something that he had been searching for ever since his parents had died and he knew that he couldn’t go wrong as long as he had them in his corner. “I got used to being a werewolf but this is going to be something else entirely.” He had no idea how to balance those two sides but he knew that it was the same for Hope with her magic and her werewolf side so he knew that he would figure it out too. “Thank you, that means a lot,” he admitted. He’d had friends before but never ones like those he’d found in Mystic Falls and he knew that he would stay with them even if it meant doing so as a hybrid. He hadn’t expected Hope to say that he was going to have to drink her blood in order to make that happen, though, and to begin with he was adamant that he couldn’t do what she was telling him that he needed to do. “I can’t, I don’t want to hurt you,” he protested although he could see that she was telling him the truth so he knew that there really wasn’t any other choice. “I won’t be able to forgive myself if I do,” he breathed, knowing that the last thing he wanted was to end up losing someone else that he cared about. As Hope bit down on her wrist and made herself bleed, Raf reached forward and grasped her hand and arm gently. There was a time when the thought of drinking blood would have repulsed him but he couldn’t deny that his body wanted it even if his mind didn’t so he leaned forward and covered the wound with his mouth before beginning to drink. In that moment he realised just how easy it would be for a frenzy to overtake him but he had learned how to control the wolf and he knew that he needed to do the same with this. Taking only what he needed he let go of Hope and wiped his mouth before letting his eyes meet hers. “I didn’t hurt you, did I?” he asked, hoping that he hadn’t taken too much. HOPE MIKAELSON

Hope felt a soft smile touch her lips at Rafael's words before she nodded her head in an understanding manner. "Exactly. We won't let you go through this on your own." She assured him. She wasn't going to let him go through any of this on his own. She was going to do everything in her power to stay by Rafael's side, to always be there for him when he needed her. He was her first ever turned hybrid and it definitely meant a lot to Hope. She didn't want to let him down. "Yeah, it will be overwhelming at first, but this also means that you're now stronger than you've ever been, Raf." Hope said with a gentle smile tugging on her lips. "Being a hybrid also means that you won't have to go through the pain of transforming every full moon." She pointed out, knowing just how painful it was to feel every bone in your body break and then heal back into place again. "If anything, you can transform at will, you won't actually have to wait for a full moon to do that. It's like that for me, too." With her status, she can transform into a werewolf whenever she wanted and didn't have to wait for the full moon to do that.
Thank you, that means a lot, I can’t, I don’t want to hurt you, I won’t be able to forgive myself if I do, I didn’t hurt you, did I?
"Of course, Raf." Hope said with a gentle smile resting on her lips. Hope's eyes softened when Rafael refused to give in and drink from her, not wanting to hurt her. "How about this, I'll stop you if it gets too much. You've seen how strong I am today, it won't be a problem for me to stop you." Hope's shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug, her smile still evident on her lips before she lifted her wrist to her lips to bite down on the flesh until it was bleeding. Once she had done that, she offered her wrist to Rafael and seemed to relax when he eventually gave in and drank from her blood, taking only what was needed. When Rafael leaned away, Hope lowered her hand down. "No, no, you didn't." Hope assured with a soft smile on her lips. "You actually did really well. You didn't lose control which is remarkable." She praised, meaning every word. She was very proud of Rafael for not losing control or taking more than needed. "I don't think you'll need my help for long." She added in a soft voice. "You're doing pretty well already." Hope glanced around her for a moment before her eyes relaxed on Rafael again. "Come on, let's get you back to the school. You definitely need some rest after the night you've had."

Raf really was grateful to Hope and the others, he’d killed someone in order to trigger his curse and even though it had been an accident he knew that they still could have shunned him because of it. Instead they had stood by him and he knew that he couldn’t imagine not having all of them in his life now. He hadn’t known what to expect when Dr S had showed up and saved him from the exorcism attempt, he hadn’t known what the Salvatore School would be like but a part of him had felt sure that he wouldn’t fit in. In the end it had turned out to be the complete opposite, though, and now he was beyond glad that he had decided to give the school and the students a chance. “You have no idea how grateful I am to have all of you.” For such a long time he had known that he wasn’t wanted anywhere that he had ended up but it wasn’t like that now. Now he had a place where he belonged and people who wanted him around and he knew that he didn’t want to take that for granted. “In that case perhaps I might stand a chance against you in our sparring sessions now,” Raf said, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips as he looked over at her. He couldn’t deny that he was surprised when Hope said that he wouldn’t have to go through the pain of transforming every full moon and could instead choose when he wanted to transform. That was something that he hadn’t expected at all. “I don’t like the pain but there’s nothing like being able to run as a wolf,” he admitted. “I think I’ll still transform and I’ll try to be there for you when you do too.” He had promised Hope that he wasn’t going to leave her alone and it was a promise that he intended on sticking to. Having to drink Hope’s blood in order to complete the transition was never going to sit well with him but Raf knew that he didn’t have a choice and as Hope said that she would stop him if it got too much, Raf nodded. “Alright, deal,” he agreed, knowing that the last thing he wanted was for anything to happen to Hope. He knew that if anyone could stop him then it was Hope so he knew that he had to trust her just as much as she seemed to trust him. Once he had taken what he needed he let her go and he felt a half smile tug at his lips as she said it was remarkable that he hadn’t lost control. “I kept thinking about you and how much I didn’t want to hurt you,” he admitted. “I don’t know that it will be the same with anyone else but I’m so glad you’re alright,” he said, knowing that he hadn’t hurt her. “Trust me I will. Learning to stay in control as a werewolf is one thing but I can feel the bloodlust inside of me. Now I know how MG feels,” he breathed. He had known that his friend sometimes struggled to stay in control but now he understood why that was and he had a feeling that it was only going to get worse before it got better. “Yeah, you’re right,” he nodded as Hope said that he needed some rest and started heading in the direction of the school. “How do I tell people what happened?” he asked, not sure how he could do that when it didn’t really make sense to him yet. You have no idea how grateful I am to have all of you. In that case perhaps I might stand a chance against you in our sparring sessions now, I don’t like the pain but there’s nothing like being able to run as a wolf, I think I’ll still transform and I’ll try to be there for you when you do too.
Hope sent Rafael a soft smile as she listened to him. She quirked a brow at Rafael's words when he said that he might stand a chance against her in their sparring sessions. "Hmm..." She pretended to think for a moment before her lips stretched into a grin. "You actually might, yeah." She played along as her grin eased down and was left with a sincere smile. Hope had felt the pain for the first time that day she had triggered her gene and at the time, it was also the full moon, so it wasn't long before her bones began to break and then heal again. That pain had been the worst thing that Hope had ever experienced before. But after that, shifting became a lot easier for her. She couldn't imagine going through the same pain every full moon. She always thought that Rafael was strong for putting up with that. "We can run together." Hope said with a quick nod of her head following. She really wouldn't mind that.
Alright, deal, I kept thinking about you and how much I didn’t want to hurt you, I don’t know that it will be the same with anyone else but I’m so glad you’re alright, Trust me I will. Learning to stay in control as a werewolf is one thing but I can feel the bloodlust inside of me. Now I know how MG feels, Yeah, you’re right, How do I tell people what happened?
Hope was quiet as she listened to Rafael, her lips spreading to form a sympathetic smile as she lifted her hand up to tug a strand of hair behind her ear before she effectively brushed her hair off her shoulder. "You did really well, Raf." She praised, knowing that it must have not been easy for him, especially when the blood first hit his tongue. It must have been tempting. She was grateful that he had held back for her sake. It really did mean a lot to her. "We'll get through this together, okay? It might not be easy at first, but I know you'll get through this." She said with a quick nod of her head. She had so much faith in Rafael. "I understand." Hope said in a soft voice. "We'll be there for you, every step of the way." Hope promised as they began heading toward the school. When Rafael's question came through, Hope took a moment to consider a good answer for that.
"It's up to you, really. You can be honest with them about it. Tell them what really happened." Hope suggested, her hands settling inside the pockets of her jacket to warm them up. "Or, you could wait a little bit before telling them. I bet you still don't believe this is real yet. So, you could give yourself some time to really process all of this. They won't hold it against you if you decide to do that, Raf. Either way, I'll support you."

Raf hadn’t known about the supernatural world before he had triggered his curse but then again there were a lot of things that he hadn’t known until it was too late. He hadn’t known that his parents had adopted him until after they had died and he hadn’t known about the curse he was born with until he had triggered it. For most of his life he felt like he had been living on the back foot but now he knew that he needed to find a way to get out in front of this and deal with things on his own terms. Everyone at the Salvatore School had accepted him from the moment he had arrived there and that was something that he had never had before. He felt like he’d had the chance to become the person that he was meant to be and even though he was now a hybrid rather than just a regular werewolf he knew that he needed to hold on to who he was. “In that case I’m looking forward to our next sparring session,” Raf said, a genuine smile forming on his face this time even though he was pretty sure that Hope would still manage to beat him. He knew how much work she put into learning how to fight and it had definitely paid off, that was for sure. “Deal,” he nodded as Hope said that they could run together. He couldn’t deny that the thought of never having to go through that pain again was appealing but he knew that he wouldn’t give up the feeling of being free that turning into a wolf gave him so he knew that he would just have to continue to deal with it the same way he had done ever since he had triggered his curse. It would have been easy for Raf to lose control because he had felt the desire the moment Hope’s blood had passed his lips but he had known that he couldn’t do that. He didn’t doubt that she would have stopped him if he had lost control but if he had done then he knew that he wouldn’t have been able to forgive himself so as far as he was concerned it just wasn’t an option. What was going to happen now he wasn’t sure but he nodded as Hope said that they would get through this together. “I think we can get through anything together,” he admitted. Hope had been there for him when he first got to the school and he in turn had been there for her when she had triggered her curse. “You still have all of this to come, don’t you?” he asked, not sure whether Hope had really thought too much about it yet. She had already triggered her werewolf side but she hadn’t yet activated her vampire side although he knew that when she did he would be there to help her just like she was there for him now. “I really don’t know what I’d do without all of you,” he admitted. “I’ve never had friends like you before.” In the past he’d made friends but he had always known not to get too attached because he would have to move on sooner or later. Now he didn’t have to worry about that, though, and it was something that he knew better than to take for granted. “It really doesn’t feel like this is real right now,” Raf nodded as they walked. “I’ll have to tell Lan and Dr S but I know what the rumour mill is like. Even if I keep it to myself for now it won’t stay that way for long.” Word always seemed to spread around the school so quickly, that was the way it had always been and he wasn’t sure that it would change now.
