| I t might be mild compared to some places but we still have plenty to keep us busy, I think the parents did as well, they had enough to worry about,
Ethan almost instantly let out a hum of agreement with that before he nodded his head with a chuckle following. "Oh yeah, for sure. I mean, we technically had to rescue this lady in her car that was flipped outside down in the middle of the street with her almost drowning in a bit of water on the floor. It was... an interesting experience, I guess." Ethan said with a brief chuckle falling from his lips. When Antonio told him that his parents had appreciated it as well he couldn't help the snicker that left his lips as he nudged the other with his elbow, shaking his head with a soft smile resting on his lips. "Okay, you know what? Maybe they're unlucky because they didn't get to see it." Ethan said with a chuckle falling from his lips, pretending as though it would have been a eighth wonder of the world. It does, he deserves so much better than this, Looks like we’re here.
Ethan nodded his head in agreement because Antonio was right. Elias most definitely deserved better than this. But it seemed like life was not going to go kindly on him any time soon, continuously hurting him like this. It pained him to even think about it. He wanted to make his life easier on him. He was going to do everything in his might to make sure that happens. When the ambulance came to a stop, his attention shifted to his boyfriend, nodding a few times. "Yup. Thank God, I was starting to lose my mind a bit, if I'm being honest." The doors opened next and he was met with the paramedic who had been behind the wheel as he opened the door and soon enough, they were grasping the stretcher that Elias was on as they guided him into the hospital. Ethan stepped out of the ambulance shortly after and made his way into the hospital. Ethan just needed to make sure that the younger was okay, that his condition's stable because otherwise, he won't be able to get much sleep tonight. |

“At least we can’t say there’s ever a dull day when we’re working,” Antonio chuckled. They really did never know what they were going to get from one call to the next. Sometimes they were asked to get involved with search and rescue operations and it was during one of those that Antonio had almost died when the cave collapsed but that was what made their job interesting. It had taken Antonio a long time to figure out what he wanted to do with his life, he had fought during both World Wars and he knew that he could have continued being a soldier and fighting for his country but the truth was that after losing Ethan he hadn’t been able to bring himself to enlist again. He hadn’t known just how deep the loss ran back then but now he did and it seemed fitting that Ethan had found himself drawn to the same career as him once more. As Ethan nudged him with his elbow, Antonio couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face and he nudged his boyfriend back in return. “Trust me, no one wants to see you being seasick while we’re on a call,” he teased. If it had happened then Antonio knew that he would have had to focus on the job at hand and then make sure that Ethan was ok after that but thankfully it hadn’t come to that. As good a distraction as focusing on some of their calls was, the truth was that it wasn’t enough to stop Antonio from worrying about Elias – not by a long shot. The boy had been through so much already and now if he didn’t have any other family that he could stay with then he faced going back into the system once more. Antonio’s parents were strict and they were incredibly old fashioned but they had at least always been there for him. He didn’t know much about Elias’ past but the boy had never spoken about having anyone in his life other than his foster parents and Antonio couldn’t help but wonder what had happened to his biological parents. There were so many things that could have happened to result in Elias ending up in the system but he still hoped that things might be able to start getting better for the boy now and he knew that he and Ethan would do everything they could in order to make that happen. “He’s going to be ok, I need you to believe that,” Antonio said gently. He could see just how worried Ethan was about the boy but Elias was strong and he was a phoenix so no matter what happened he was certain that the boy would be just fine physically. Mentally, however, was a different story altogether and they both knew how that went but he was certain that they would make sure that Elias wasn’t alone. As the ambulance doors opened, Antonio waited for the paramedics to wheel Elias out before climbing out of the vehicle himself and together they all headed into the hospital. Elias was taken straight to a room to be checked over while a nurse approached them to take the information that they could give. As she asked if there was anyone that she should call, Antonio shook his head. “We’re not sure, his foster parents died in the fire,” he explained at which point she nodded before leaving to start logging in the information and Antonio lifted his gaze to meet his boyfriend’s. “How are you holding up?”ETHAN ALVAREZ

| A t least we can’t say there’s ever a dull day when we’re working. Trust me, no one wants to see you being seasick while we’re on a call,
Ethan nodded his head in agreement because it was exactly like that. There had never been a dull day at work or a day where he felt like he was out of his mind with boredom. There was always something for them to do, always. So his boyfriend was definitely right about that. He made a noise that sounded offended at Antonio's words before he turned his head to protest but as his lips parted to say something, he couldn't find the right words to say so he ended up pressing his lips together instead before he nodded his head a few times. "Yeah, okay. You're right." Ethan said with a chuckle falling from his lips shortly after. Most of the time, his seasickness was pretty manageable which he was thankful for and it wasn't like most of their rescues had water involved in them, anyway. Most of the time, they were on dry land, so it wasn't something he had to worry about constantly. He’s going to be ok, I need you to believe that,
Ethan's attention drifted to his boyfriend as he heard his words before he slowly nodded his head in agreement. "I know. He's a strong kid," he had no doubt that he would be okay. "But, I just..." Ethan trailed off, feeling his words get tangled together, leaving him unsure of what he wants to say or how to put his words together. He ran his tongue over his bottom lip, his blue eyes resting on Elias as his heart resided heavily in his chest. He didn't get the chance to finish his words because the paramedics were soon opening the doors and taking Elias out of the ambulance, grasping the stretcher as they wheeled him in to be checked immediately. His eyes followed them until they were no longer visible to him. How are you holding up?
When the nurse approached them to take any information she could get about the new patient, Antonio took it upon himself to answer while Ethan shifted weight from one foot to the other, looking beyond anxious. Though he eased up a bit when he heard his boyfriend's voice, blue eyes settling on him almost immediately. "I'm okay, I just uh, can't stop thinking about him." Ethan admitted with a soft sigh falling from his lips. "I can't stop thinking about how he's going to wake up and be all alone because his foster parents are gone." Ethan's heart was settling so heavily in his chest it made it feel like he couldn't breathe. "I know we're here for him now, but... I just can't imagine the toll it would take on him. On his heart. His mind..." Ethan trailed off as he leaned back against the wall, his expression gave away that he was feeling sad. Extremely so. "It's just heartbreaking, s'all." Ethan said with a soft sigh falling from his lips, his arms crossing in front of his chest as he gnawed on his inner cheeks. |

Never knowing what was going to happen from one shift to the next was something that Antonio enjoyed. It kept him on his toes and it meant that he got to try his hands at lots of different things. Antonio had started working as a fire fighter long before he had known that Ethan was still alive but being able to work with the guy made it that much better as far as Antonio was concerned. They had shown what a good team they could be while they were serving in the army together and even though they had spent decades apart that still hadn’t changed. Now and then while they were at the firehouse between calls Antonio still found himself shooting glances in his boyfriend but he didn’t have to hide that any longer, not like he had before. In the past he hadn’t wanted anyone to see what he was doing and he knew that it was the same for Ethan but now they were free to be together and there wasn’t a feeling quite like it in the world. It had taken Antonio a while to get his head around the fact that he had fallen for his best friend but he had realised that that wasn’t something to be ashamed of and now he knew to embrace it. Hearing Ethan laugh was enough to bring a smile to Antonio’s face. He had known that he was right but it was still good to hear Ethan say it as well. They saw a lot of things while they were on the job but one thing he was glad that he had been able to avoid was seeing Ethan get seasick. If it had happened then Antonio knew that he would have taken care of his boyfriend after he’d finished helping deliver the baby but it hadn’t come to that and for that Antonio was grateful. Talk of work was only a distraction from what was really going on and the worry they both felt for Elias but it worked for a short time. “He is,” Antonio nodded as Ethan said that Elias was a strong kid. As Ethan tried to say something else before training off, Ethan gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “You don’t want to lose him, I get it,” Antonio assured him, lifting their joined hands and pressing a gentle kiss to Ethan’s knuckles. Moments later the doors to the ambulance opened and they helped the paramedics wheel the stretcher into the emergency room. The boy was taken off to be examined straight away leaving the two of them alone to wait for news for the time being. Giving the information to the nurse was easy enough to do since they didn’t know too much but once she had what she needed she moved away too and Antonio had a feeling that it wouldn’t be long before social services were called. What would happen to Elias then he wasn’t sure but he knew that they would find out soon enough. Now Antonio was free to focus on Ethan though and he knew that he wanted to make sure that the guy was doing ok. “He won’t be alone, we’re here for him,” Antonio assured him. He knew that it wasn’t going to be the same, they weren’t Elias’ parents but they both cared about him and he knew that that had to count for something. “You said it yourself, he’s a strong kid. We have no idea what he has been through but I think he has been in and out of the system for a long time. All we can do is support him the best we can,” he said gently. The girls both cared about Elias a lot and Antonio and Ethan did as well so he hoped that this time things would be different. “We’ll help him get through this,” he said, wrapping his arms around Ethan as he heard him sigh. He understood how Ethan was feeling but that didn’t mean that Antonio didn’t still want to protect him from it as well if he could. They stayed like that until the doctor emerged and Antonio looked up as the man approached. “How’s he doing?” he asked before letting out a sigh of relief as the doctor said that Elias was going to be ok but that they wanted to keep him in for a couple of days so they could keep an eye on him. “Can we see him?” he asked before nodding as the doctor said they could but not for long because he needed some rest. “Come on,” he said, taking Ethan’s hand and leading the way to the room that Elias had been taken to.
