It had been a few weeks since Antonio had returned to work following the cave collapse and the truth was that it felt like he had never been away. Becoming a firefighter felt like it was in his blood, before he trained to become one he had drifted around trying to figure out what he wanted to do with his life. He felt like he had finally found his calling and the fact that it had brought him and Ethan closer together was a bonus. They hadn’t felt ready to admit that there was something more going on between them for a while but as they had found out they apparently weren’t very good at hiding how they felt about each other because the stolen glances when the other wasn’t looking had apparently been spotted by the others that they worked with. To begin with he had felt a little embarrassed about that but everyone they worked with had understood anyway. They had all seemingly known what was going on between the two of them before they had felt ready to admit it themselves and they’d been able to be open about their relationship ever since. While they were working they were always professional, they had each other’s backs and they were able to focus on the job knowing that they were both going to do everything they could in order to make it back home at the end of the day. They knew now what it was like when one of them didn’t make it home and Antonio knew that he never wanted to put Ethan or the girls through that again. That day had proved to be a pretty eventful one, they’d had a few calls already but now it was nearing the end of their shift and it looked like they were going to have one more call to deal with before they were able to head home as the alarm sounded saying that there was a fire at an apartment block. Pulling on his gear, Antonio climbed into the fire truck along with the others and soon enough they were on their way. The smoke could be seen from a few blocks away and as they neared the building a thought struck Antonio. “That’s the building that Elias lives in,” he said, his heart sinking at the realisation. It was only a few days ago that he had driven Elias home after the boy had spent some time hanging out with the girls and he couldn’t deny that he was now worried about the boy. As the Captain asked which floor he lived on Antonio told him and he and Ethan were told to clear the upper floors which included the one that Elias lived on while the others cleared the floors below. “You got it Cap,” he nodded as the truck came to a stop, glad that they were going to be able to check on the boy themselves. Climbing out, Antonio waited for Ethan to join him. “Are you ready?”ETHAN ALVAREZ

| I f someone were to ask Ethan just what he loved the most in the world; he'd offer three answers. First, he'd begin with Toni, the second would be the girls, and the third would be his job. He was one of those lucky people who were able to chase after their passion and work a job that they loved. Granted, it was a dangerous life, but honestly? There was nothing else he'd rather be doing with his life right now. He wanted to save people, he wanted to do this job no matter how dangerous it was. There was just something so exhilarating about this job that made him want to keep pushing forward. Ethan didn't think of himself as some sort of hero, but he thought of himself as a firefighter who is determined to do his job right. Today felt like any other to Ethan, especially on the job but it didn't make him feel bored or anything like that. They had already done a few calls and this was seemingly their last one since they were nearing the end of their shift. This one, though... It was different. It was personal. Ethan's heart dropped at Antonio's words as he tilted a bit to the side so that he could look at the window ahead that offered the view to the smoke clearly visible. Antonio was right. This was the building that Elias was living in. "Shit, you're right..." It looked like Ethan was beginning to feel a bit restless now, aching to get out of the truck so that he could see if the boy was in there. Once they had the Captain's order, Ethan nodded his head a few times. "You got it, Cap." Ethan reached for the door to open it and hopped out of the truck as he moved to collect his gear a bit hurriedly as he put on his mask to protect him from the fumes. He joined Antonio not long after and nodded at his question. "Yeah, I'm ready. Let's go," Ethan entered the building and started climbing the stairs, his steps were almost effortless as he more or less skipped a couple of steps as he climbed. It looked graceful, almost. He breathed in and out through the mask as they reached the fifth floor. It was where the fire was the most intense. Ethan looked over hsi shoulder to make sure Antonio was okay before he started making his way over to the first apartment. "Mystic Falls Fire Department!" Ethan called out as he pushed the door open to find the first apartment vacant. The second seemed to be the same along with the rest. It seemed like they had evacuated the second they saw the smoke. It made his job a lot easier. But he didn't look happy just yet because Elias was still not safe."Elias! This is the Fire Department, we're coming for you!" Ethan, at this point, wasn't so sure that the younger could hear him or if he was even alive... No. Ethan shook his head not wanting to assume the worst as he pushed the door open but it seemed to be blocked by ... something. "Toni, push this open with me." And on the count of three, the door was pushed open. "Elias!" Ethan called out as he began his search for the younger but what he found instead left him with chills running down his spine. "Oh god..." Ethan turned away from the completely charred bodies, his heart sinking into his chest. He didn't want to find Elias like this too... Ethan gulped past the lump in his throat and continued his search for the younger boy in the midst of the chaos and the fire. |

Antonio had drifted around from place to place for a long time and he hadn’t really found anywhere that felt like home. After Samara died he had felt like a fresh start was exactly what he and the girls needed and he didn’t regret his decision to move to Mystic Falls one bit. His kind were rare given that they had been hunted almost to the point of extinction over the centuries but his parents had taught him how to keep what he was a secret from those around him and he had in turn taught the girls the same thing so he knew that they were a lot less likely to draw the attention of hunters than a lot of the people in Mystic Falls who were supernatural were. Ethan joining the family had felt like the missing piece and ever since then Antonio had been counting his blessings. Not only did he have two incredible children but he had found someone that he truly loved and he had also found his calling in life so he knew that he really couldn’t ask for anything more than that. He knew that his job was risky but he had accepted that a long time ago and so had the girls. He wouldn’t have blamed them if they had wanted him to find a less dangerous job after the cave collapsed but they had continued to be just as supportive as ever and with Ethan by his side it had been easy for him to return to work. It had taken him a long time to find what he was meant to do with his life and being able to do that and work with Ethan was more than he could have ever hoped for. The two of them were always given the same shifts which made it that much easier since they could look out for each other and it also gave the girls peace of mind that neither of them was out there alone but their shifts always seemed to vary in their intensity. Some days were busier than others and that day they’d had a few calls already but their shift was nearing an end when the last call came in. Before they had even reached the building Antonio had an awful feeling in the pit of his stomach as he realised where they were heading and he could see the recognition on Ethan’s face as he realised it as well. In an instant Ethan seemed to become restless and Antonio reached across to give his hand a squeeze. “It’s ok, we’ll find him,” he assured his boyfriend. They had agreed to keep it professional while they were at work and they were pretty good at doing just that but this call was different, someone they knew was potentially in danger and Antonio was just as worried as Ethan was. Elias was a friend to the girls and they had already lost their mom and almost lost him too so Antonio knew that he and Ethan would do everything they could to make sure that they didn’t lose someone else that they cared about. Climbing out of the truck, Antonio slipped his mask and helmet on before following Ethan into the building once he was ready as well. Their Captain could have easily told them to clear other floors given their connection to Elias but he had seemed to know how worried the two of them were about him and they moved up the stairs quickly as they headed towards the upper floors. By the time they reached the fifth floor the hallway was full of flames and they quickly divided the apartments between them, Ethan taking one side while Antonio took the other. It didn’t take them long to clear each apartment and Antonio felt his heart ache as Ethan called out to Elias. He wasn’t even sure if the boy was in the building or not but he couldn’t shake the sinking feeling that seemed to be building inside of him with each passing moment. It would have been easy to give in to that worry but they had a job to do and Antonio kept on checking the apartments on his side of the hallway until Ethan found a door that he couldn’t open on his own – the one to the apartment that Elias lived in. In an instant he was at his boyfriend’s side and they broke down the door with ease. Stepping into the room, Antonio’s gaze fell to the two bodies on the floor almost straight away and that bad feeling intensified. “Just keep moving, we need to find him,” he said, giving Ethan’s shoulder a squeeze as he moved further into the room. “Elias, call out if you’re in here!” he called as he searched the apartment before feeling like his heart was in his throat as he reached the bedrooms. “Ethan, I found him!” he called out. The fire wasn’t quite as bad in there and lying on the floor was Elias. Antonio he moved forward to check the boy’s pulse and it was then that he saw the wounds to the boy’s chest, ones that no human could survive. Sure enough the boy wasn’t breathing and he didn’t have a pulse and Antonio let out a shaky breath as he turned to look at Ethan. “We can’t help him, he’s gone.”ETHAN ALVAREZ

| E than had a bad feeling about this – call it a gut feeling if you will. But it was there. It was one that he couldn't ignore with ease, either. He tried his hardest to just shake it off and focus on the mission at hand here. He didn't want to waste any time because he knew that in situations like these, every second counts. Everything you do will have its own consequences later and depending on how fast you move, they could either be good or bad ones. Ethan looked over at Antonio when he heard him by his side as they both looked at the charred corpse of Elias' parents. "Yeah..." He was thankful for Antonio's presence because it helped him ease up a little bit. Ethan started his search for the younger boy. "Elias! This is the Fire Department! We're here for you!" He hoped that they would be able to prompt an answer out of the boy even if it came in the form of a grunt somewhere. It would just help them find the boy quicker. Ethan stopped in his tracks when he heard that Antonio had found him. He turned down almost instantly and started jogging to head over to where his boyfriend was. Once he had reached Antonio, his eyes settled on Elias who was on the floor, unresponsive, suffering from wounds that nobody would be able to survive from. The sight made Ethan's heart drop to the floor. "Damn it!" He had a feeling since the moment he came here. "He's still a fucking kid..." Ethan usually never cursed unless he was feeling deep emotions such as sadness and frustration which he was feeling in this situation. Ethan knew that in a job like this, you just can't save everyone. There will be some losses like this one and Elias' parents. He gulped past the cotton ball lodged in his throat and blinked his tears away. "We should... give him a proper burial." Ethan spoke up, his voice wavering a little, his emotions still grasping a better hold on him. "C'mon, let's... let's pick him up." He didn't even want to think what he'd say to the girls. |

Antonio had learned pretty quickly after becoming a firefighter that it was impossible to know what was going to happen from one call to the next. Some were worse than others but Antonio was always usually able to keep himself at a distance from what was going on. This time was different though, this time someone that he and Ethan both knew and cared about lived in the apartment building they were heading to and that made it so much more difficult. This time they were both personally invested in the outcome and that wasn’t something that Antonio had had happen to him before. He wanted to make sure that Elias was ok, he needed to, but the more time that went on the bigger that feeling of dread seemed to get. They could have headed straight to the boy’s apartment but they had a job to do and they had a process that they needed to follow so they checked each apartment in turn like they were meant to and finally reached the one that they had been aiming for. The sight of Elias’ foster parents lying dead on the floor was enough to make Antonio’s heart sink even more but he knew that he had to stay strong and do his job and after making sure that Ethan was ok he headed further into the apartment. Ethan had the front room to check while Antonio made his way to the back, being careful to avoid the flames that were raging all around them. He could hear Ethan calling out to the boy just like he was but no response came. It wasn’t long before Antonio’s gaze came to rest on the boy and as he moved closer he could see just how had his injuries were but he still found himself checking on Elias and reaching to feel for a pulse anyway, hoping that he might be wrong. “Rigor mortis has started to set in, he’s been dead for a few hours at least,” he said, feeling sick to the stomach at the thought. Reports of the fire had only just come in so whatever had happened to him had happened before the fire started or was perhaps even the cause of it. Hearing Ethan curse, Antonio straightened up and nodded. “He deserved so much better than this,” he agreed. He had no idea how they were going to break the news to the girls that their friend was dead but he knew that they would have to find a way. “You’re right, we should,” he nodded as Ethan said that they should give him a proper burial. He knew that Elias didn’t have any family to speak of and he wasn’t sure if the boy had any friends other than the girls but the four of them would be there for him anyway. “Grab his legs?” he asked, knowing that it was the easiest way given how bad the fire was spreading around them. Before Antonio could start to life Elias off the ground the boy’s body burst into flames like it had decided to spontaneously combust and his eyes went wide as he moved away from Elias and looked over at his partner. “What the hell?” he breathed, unable to believe what he was seeing. “I thought he was human?”ETHAN ALVAREZ

| E than nodded his head slowly when Antonio told him that rigor mortis had already started to set in, which gave away that he might have died long before the fire started. It would explain those wounds. That means someone had killed him and possibly his parents. The downside to how his parents looked right now was that he couldn't confirm if that was the cause because their bodies were charred beyond recognition. He couldn't even tell which one was which. Ethan blinked his tears away, knowing that he was still working right now and he just couldn't break down right now. He needed to stay strong to be able to push through the day. He didn't even want to think about telling the girls later, he just wanted to focus on the current moment and let the rest pass because he knows that it will pass. It'll hurt, no doubt, but it'll pass. He hoped so, at least. He nodded and started moving closer to Elias' body, his heart feeling heavy in his chest. Looking at him up close like this only served to hurt him more. He gulped past the lump in his throat and bent down to grab the young man's legs only to step back a few steps with wide eyes when the boy's body started to combust into flames. The sight was more than enough to make him gasp, surprise evident on his expression. "Y...Yeah, that's what I thought too," but what he was experiencing was a lot closer to what Phoenixes go through when they die. "He's... I think he's a Phoenix." He moved closer to push through the ash once the fire had died down. Sure enough, there was Elias. Laying there. "Oh my god." He continued pushing the ashes away from the young boy's body, his wounds were nowhere to be seen and it made Ethan let out a sigh of relief. "We should carry him out, c'mon." He didn't want him to suffocate in the smoke of the fire, so he bent down and grabbed the young boy's legs and carried him out with Antonio's help. Now that they were no longer anywhere near the burning building, he looked at Antonio. "I think... he's starting to wake up. Let's put him down a little bit, the night air seems to be helping." |

Ever since he realised where they were heading, Antonio had still found himself hoping for the best. He hadn’t wanted any of this to happen, he had hoped that Elias would have been far away from the apartment building where he would be safe but unfortunately it hadn’t worked out like that. Elias was gone and there wasn’t anything that either of them could do to help him. Antonio had wondered if they could have done something if they’d only gotten there sooner but a quick check told him otherwise. Elias had been dead for hours so it wouldn’t have mattered if they’d gotten there any earlier at all. Antonio’s heart ached as he thought about having to tell the girls that their friend was dead, it had been bad enough explaining that their mom was gone to them even though they had never known her. Elias was someone that they both cared about and the last thing he wanted was for them to have to go through losing someone else especially given that not too long ago they thought that they’d lost him too but he knew that they would find a way, they were going to have to. Looking over at Ethan, Antonio could see that his partner was hurting as well and the truth was that he was too but they had a job to do and at the very least they could make sure that he had a proper burial. They were about to pick him up and carry him outside when the boy’s body burst into flames and Antonio was just as shocked as Ethan was. “He might not even know, he’s been living in care all his life,” Antonio breathed. Ethan hadn’t known what he was for a long time either and there certainly hadn’t been any noticeable signs with him that had tipped Antonio off that he wasn’t human. He had believed Ethan to be dead for decades before they found each other again so he knew that it was definitely possible. As the flames that had engulfed Elias’ body died down, Antonio started pushing the ash out of the way along with Ethan and sure enough there was Elias lying underneath. All of his wounds were gone and he looked almost as though he was asleep. “He’s ok,” Antonio said, relieved tears forming in his eyes. Nodding as Ethan said that they should carry him out, Antonio reached for his radio for a minute as the Captain asked them to check in and asked if they’d found Elias. “The top floor is clear Cap, it looks like this is where the fire started. We found him and we think he’s going to be ok. We’re bringing him out now,” he said quickly before helping Ethan carry the boy out before the smoke could get to him. Thankfully Elias’ apartment was the last one on the floor and the others had cleared the rest of the building so all that was left now was to put out the fire. Soon they were far enough away from the building and they set Elias down on the ground. “Elias, it’s Antonio. Can you hear me?” he asked as the boy began to stir. “Ethan is here too, you scared us there for a minute.” ETHAN ALVAREZ

| E than whispered a soft 'yeah' when Antonio suggested that the younger might not even know that he was a Phoenix all along. "Yeah..." It reminded Ethan of himself so much because if it weren't for him literally dying and coming back to life, he would've continued his life thinking that he was a mere mortal. It was strange now that he was thinking about it. But he was glad that the younger wasn't mortal because if he had been, he would have remained dead and he didn't want to think about that for long. "At least... Now we won't have to tell the girls that he's gone." It would have broken them. He saw just how close Ela was to Elias and how much she enjoyed his company. It was endearing to see. He was so thankful he didn't have to tell her that he'd died. While Antonio reported back to their Captain to let him know what had happened, Ethan kept his eyes focused on the younger boy, his lips stretching to form a relieved smile but he knew that the boy wasn't out of the woods just yet. He still needs to check him in case his lungs were damaged by the smoke or anything like that. He probably won't be able to rest until he'd made sure that he was one-hundred percent. Once they were outside and away from the smoke, he let the boy's body rest down on the floor. His eyes moved to Antonio when he heard him talk to the younger boy, he watched as Elias stirred a bit, the sight making relief flood him. God, he was so relieved to see him move like this. Not long ago, rigor mortis was already beginning to nestle in his bones. Now, he was awake. Or starting to wake up, at least. He squatted down beside the boy as he moved to remove his helmet, letting it rest beside him on the floor now that they were no longer near the burning building. "Hey, kiddo." Ethan called out softly, his eyes focused solely on the younger. "Take it easy, yeah? You might feel a bit disoriented at first. But you're safe now," Ethan assured the younger boy, his lips stretching to form a soft and reassuring smile. "We've got you," |

Working in the town they lived in meant that they were sure to come across people that they knew while on calls sometimes but this was different. Elias was just a kid, he was someone who had befriended both of the girls and Antonio had found himself dreading having to tell them both that someone else that they cared about was gone. They were all immortal so losing people was something that they were all going to have to get used to sooner or later but the girls were only sixteen and they had already lost their mom and come close to losing him as well so telling them about Elias would have been one of the most difficult things that he’d have had to do. He still wasn’t sure how to break the curse that ran in their mom’s side of the family but that was a problem for another day and he at least had Ethan there to shoulder that worry with him now. Telling him wasn’t easy but it had still come as a relief to say the words out loud and know that someone understood. He could have kept it to himself but he hadn’t wanted to do that and he stood by his decision. Thankfully it looked like Elias wasn’t human after all and for that Antonio was grateful. He wasn’t sure if the boy knew but if he didn’t then Antonio knew that they would be there to help him. “I was dreading that conversation,” Antonio admitted. The girls had been through so much already so all he wanted to do was to protect them and stop them from getting hurt again. Now as he looked down at Elias he knew that he wanted to protect the boy as well. He didn’t know exactly what had happened that day but he had a pretty good idea and just the thought was enough to make him angry. Elias was already dead before the fire started and Antonio knew that he never should have been put in that position. Soon enough they were outside and Antonio was relieved when Elias began to stir. He could tell that Ethan was worried about the boy too and Antonio couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face as his boyfriend’s words. “We’d better get him checked out, he has been through a lot,” he said, giving Ethan’s shoulder a gentle squeeze before beckoning over the paramedics who had been waiting to check on Elias since they brought him out. “Looks like the fire is almost out, we’ll be heading back soon,” he said. They were still going to have to let their Captain and the police know what they had found but after that their time would be their own and as the paramedics checked Elias over sand said that they wanted to take the boy to hospital so a doctor could take a look at him, Antonio knew where they were probably going to end up. | E than nodded his head in agreement because it was honestly the same for him, too. He didn't want to think about how that conversation would've gone down. It would have been heartbreaking for the girls. They had lost their mom and almost lost their dad. He didn't want to go home and tell them that they had lost their best friend, too. Ethan nodded his head at his boyfriend's words, knowing that the faster he gets looked at, the better for his condition. He didn't leave Elias' side right away, though. He watched as the paramedics assessed the young man's situation. Ethan eventually moved away from them as his eyes moved to settle on the building, noticing how the fire was almost out. "That's a relief," he was glad that the fire hadn't spiraled out of control. The property was damaged but not terribly so. Those floors will probably be empty for a while but other than that, he was glad that there were no other losses. He watched as the Paramedics put the young man on the stretcher and moved him to the ambulance to take him to the hospital. He knew exactly where he was going to go after his shift. He also knew for sure that Toni was going to accompany him, too. "C'mon, let's talk to the Capt." And the police shortly after. He knew how it all worked and so, it would probably take them some time but once they were done with that whole ordeal, they could accompany Elias to the hospital. Once the Captain gave them the OK to get going, he knew exactly where he was going to go and it wasn't home yet. He just needed to make sure that Elias was okay. "We're having the same thought, aren't we?" The same plan to go to the hospital, that is. He sent his boyfriend a small smile before he started making his way to the ambulance as he sat down once he was inside, his eyes focused on the younger who was on the stretcher, his heart monitor beeping with each heart beat, reassuring Ethan that his heart was working fine. That he was alive. "I just need to make sure he's okay then we can head home." Ethan told his boyfriend, his voice was soft as his eyes shifted away from the younger man to settle on his boyfriend. "You did really well today, by the way." Ethan praised with a soft smile resting on his lips. Today was a long day, but they had managed to push through thankfully. |

One thing Antonio had learned pretty quickly after becoming a vampire was that it was impossible to know what was going to happen from one shift to the next. Some might not like that but as far as Antonio was concerned that was what made the job interesting. They could face just about any combination of things during a shift but with something like this especially they had to keep their wits about then. As soon as Antonio had realised where they were heading he’d had a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach but now Elias was out of the building and it looked like he was starting to come to Antonio finally felt like he could breathe again. Everyone else in the top floor had managed to get out safely and he knew that it could have easily been so much worse. As far as he knew only Elias’ parents had lost their lives in the fire and given what he had seen when he had found the boy the truth was that Antonio wouldn’t be surprised if they were dead before the fire started as well. It looked like the fire had originated in their apartment and Antonio had a feeling that whoever was responsible for killing Elias and his parents might have been trying to cover their tracks but he didn’t know that for sure and he knew that that was for the police to figure out. Right now his main focus was making sure that Elias was going to be ok. The others they worked with had been working on putting the fire out and Antonio could see that the flames had almost died down completely. Soon enough it would be possible to head inside and start working out what had really happened but that wasn’t going to be their job this time around, they had to think about Elias. Antonio stepped back as the paramedics moved in, knowing that they were going to need room to work. Elias seemed to be drifting in and out of consciousness and it wasn’t long before they were moving him into the ambulance. “Can you wait a minute before you go?” he asked, feeling a smile form on his face as they agreed. “Let’s do it,” he nodded as Ethan said they should talk to the Captain. Heading over there with Ethan, they filled their Captain and the police in on what they had found but when it came to Elias all Antonio could say was that it looked like he’d hit his head and they’d had to revive him. He didn’t know how bad the smoke damage would be given that the boy was a phoenix and just the thought of Elias being taken to the hospital was enough to make him nervous given that he was supernatural but Antonio knew that he needed to get checked out. They didn’t know how long it would take for him to get back to full strength so they needed to err on the side of caution. Once they had explained what had happened they were given the ok to take off. As Ethan asked if they were having the same thought, Antonio nodded. “Definitely. We’re going with him,” he nodded, offering Ethan a smile in return. As their Captain said that he and the others would meet them at the hospital, Antonio’s smile widened. “Thanks Cap, we’ll see you there.” Elias didn’t have anyone in his corner now, his foster parents were gone and Antonio was pretty sure that they were the ones responsible for getting him killed in the first place so he knew that the last they could do was be there for him now. Following Ethan over to the ambulance, Antonio climbed inside and took Ethan’s hand in one of his while the other reached for Elias’. “We both do,” he nodded as Ethan said that he just needed to make sure that Elias was ok and then they could head home. As the paramedics asked if they were family, Antonio shook his head. “He’s a friend of our daughters’,” he explained which had them nodding as they closed the ambulance doors and set off. “Thanks, so did you,” he said gently. “Calls like that are always going to be tough.” They couldn’t save everyone but Antonio was so glad that they had stuck around long enough to see Elias be reborn from the ashes. | E than was grateful for his Captain and for how understanding he was. He didn't hold them back, he understood why they wanted to get in the ambulance with Elias. Ethan was truly grateful to have someone like him in his life. The man was quickly becoming like a father-figure to him. He was so much better than his real father who only cared about his image and how others saw him. He made Ethan see that he was so much better and much more capable than what the truly thought of himself. Sure, he could be an idiot at times and make some wrong decisions here and there but he was still learning, wasn't he? There'll always be room for errors along the way and his errors often made those around him laugh, so it was worth it, right? "Thank you, Cap." Ethan offered the older man a grateful smile. The man urged them to just go and so, they did. He nodded his head when Antonio explained to the paramedics that Elias was a friend of their daughters which was why they were in the ambulance right now. Ethan nervously rubbed his hands against his thighs, a nervous habit he never seemed to kick. His attention drifted to his boyfriend, his nerves easing at his words. "Thanks," he said with a gentle smile resting on his lips. "Today was definitely the first time I ever delivered a baby on a boat, but I guess I could scratch that off my bucket list." Ethan joked in a light-hearted voice. The call they had earlier came from a woman who went into an early labor while on a trip with her husband. The trip started with just two people and ended with them going home with a third mini person. "I was trying not to let the baby's first vision be me throwing up somewhere because of sea sickness." Ethan said with a small yet proud smile on his lips, glad that he had managed to push through his sea sickness to deliver the baby. The day had its challenges but they weren't as bad and as heart-breaking as this one. "Yeah, I know..." Ethan said with a small sigh following, his eyes moving to settle back on the younger. "It still feels surreal that he's actually alive right now." But Ethan was incredibly relieved, to say the least. "I'm really glad, though." |

Anyone else might have made them go back to the firehouse, change out of their work gear and then head to the hospital but their Captain wasn’t like that. He had realised how worried they were about Elias straight away and he had sent them up to the top floor of the building to look for him while the others cleared the rest of it. Now they were being given the go ahead to stay with Elias and head to the hospital with him in the ambulance and it sounded like their colleagues wouldn’t be far behind them. One thing Antonio had come to realise during the time that he had been working there was that they were like a family and they were looking out for one of their own. Antonio knew that it wasn’t going to be easy for the kid when he woke up, his foster parents were gone and Antonio wasn’t sure if he had any other family in his life but if not then he knew that they would figure something out, he refused to give up on the boy and he knew that Ethan wasn’t going to either. Elias was friends with the girls but Antonio and Ethan both cared about him too and he knew that they weren’t going to let anything else bad happen to him if they could help it. Antonio’s answer as the paramedics asked if they were family came so easily and as the words left his lips he realised that what he’d said was right. As far as he was concerned the girls were Ethan’s just as much as they were his and now they had someone else that they wanted to look out for in Elias. “We definitely get some unusual calls,” Antonio chuckled, already starting to feel better now that they were on their way to the hospital and could make sure that Elias really was going to be ok. It wasn’t too long ago that Antonio had refused to go to the hospital when Ethan and Eli had told him that he needed to go because he hadn’t wanted anyone to figure out that he wasn’t human and was already starting to heal but this was different. Elias had died and been reborn in a burning building so they needed to make sure that he was going to be alright and given everything that had happened he knew that they wouldn’t have been able to do anything differently to avoid people asking questions anyway. “You did well keeping it down, I’m sure the baby appreciated it,” he added with a grin as he gave his boyfriend’s hand a gentle squeeze. “I know what you mean,” he nodded as Ethan said it felt surreal that he was actually alive now. He wanted to ask Ethan if that was what it was like for him, he had told Antonio about what had happened after he’d died in his arms but Antonio had never seen anything like that for himself until now but he knew that he was going to have to wait until they were alone for that. “He’ll be ok,” Antonio added, certain that they would make sure of it. As the paramedic asked if Elias had any family, Antonio shook his head. “We’re not sure. His foster parents were dead when we got there and I haven’t heard him mention any other family,” he explained before turning his gaze to Ethan. “Have you?”ETHAN ALVAREZ

| W e definitely get some unusual calls,
Ethan nodded his head in agreement with a chuckle falling from his lips. "Oh yeah, for sure. It's really crazy sometimes. But sometimes it feels like Mystic Falls is pretty mild compared to other places. I could be wrong though. Definitely a lot of animal attacks in these shady woods but other than that... It's pretty calm most of the time," Ethan said with a quick nod of his head following. He was pretty relieved about the fact that Mystic Falls had never experienced things like earthquakes or any of the other natural disasters. It made their jobs easier but not incredibly so since there were still other challenges that they faced nonetheless. You did well keeping it down, I’m sure the baby appreciated it, I know what you mean, He’ll be ok,
Ethan chuckled at Antonio's words before he nodded his head a few times. "Oh yeah, I'm sure that the baby did appreciate that." He said with a half-smile resting on his lips after his quiet and brief chuckle had died down. His eyes moved back to Elias, appreciating the way Antonio gave his hand a squeeze, it gave him the comfort he needed in that moment. He turned his hand so his palm was facing upward and he gently gave Antonio's hand a squeeze to return the gesture. "I really hope so," Ethan said in a quiet voice, his eyes focused on the younger before his attention drifted to the Paramedic when he heard his question about the younger's family and if he had any left. "No, I haven't, actually." Ethan revealed with a quick nod of his head following. "I knew about his foster parents, but I don't know if he had any other family outside of the two of them." Ethan added with a small frown tugging at the corner of his lips. Now that his parents were gone, Elias pretty much had no one left in his family and Ethan found himself determined to help the younger as much as possible. Ethan was going to do everything in his might to be there for Elias. Once the Paramedic was done asking questions, his eyes momentarily moved to settle on Elias, his heart breaking for the younger one. "This feels so unfair, doesn't it?" Ethan spoke up after letting some silence stretch between the two of them, his eyes moving to settle back on Antonio. The whole situation just feels so unfair. Why did he have to suffer when he was someone who didn't deserve it? Ethan shook his head with a deep sigh falling from his lips. "Poor kid.." Ethan whispered, gnawing on his inner cheeks, his eyes filled with so much sadness for the younger boy and the situation that he was in. |

Antonio had worked in a few different places and he had started over more times than he cared to admit but Mystic Falls was definitely his favourite. He had wanted to make sure that the girls had a safe place to grow up and even though there were hunters in town it was still the perfect place for the three of them to live. It had never crossed his mind that Ethan might end up showing up there as well because he had honestly thought that the guy had died for good decades before but everything had fallen into place while they were in Mystic Falls and Antonio knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. He and Ethan hadn’t exactly been subtle with the way they had looked at each other while they were at home or at work so everyone around them had realised what was going on before the two of them had but things were going so well for them now so the truth was that nothing else mattered. Living together and working together might be difficult for some but for the two of them it was as easy as breathing. “It might be mild compared to some places but we still have plenty to keep us busy,” he chuckled. No two days were the same and they never knew what was going to happen but as far as Antonio was concerned that was what made it interesting. “I think the parents did as well, they had enough to worry about,” he grinned. They’d had enough to worry about so Antonio was glad that Ethan had managed to get through it. In a way it was good to have something else to focus on for a while but as his gaze drifted to Elias, Antonio’s heart went out to the boy. He didn’t know a lot about what Elias had been through over the years and it didn’t seem like the boy opened up to people about his past too often but he had clearly been through a lot that day and given how hesitant he had seemed to go back to the apartment some days Antonio wouldn’t be surprised if something had been going on for a while and he wanted nothing more than to keep the boy safe from now on. A small smile formed on Antonio’s face as Ethan turned his hand and squeezed his hand in return and he nodded. It was easy to fill the paramedic in on what he knew and Antonio wasn’t surprised when Ethan said that he wasn’t sure if Elias had any other family. “It does, he deserves so much better than this,” he agreed gently as Ethan asked if it felt unfair. Antonio knew that he would never understand how parents, even foster parents, could put a child in danger like that. From the moment the girls came into his life he had made himself a promise that he wasn’t going to let anyone hurt them and it was a promise that he intended on sticking to. Soon enough the ambulance was coming to a stop and Antonio’s eyes met his boyfriend’s. “Looks like we’re here.”ETHAN ALVAREZ
