Slow nights in Mystic Falls were rare enough that Deck had felt like he’d spent most of this one holding his breath. All it would’ve taken was a single mention of the fact that they’d only had three customers in the last five hours to have a mass casualty incident hitting the town. An explosion somewhere, bad fish at the Grill, although why anyone would wanna order it there was beyond him, a five car pile up out in the woods. All ludicrous scenarios but in this town Deck honestly wouldn’t have been surprised if they found themselves juggling all three at once.
Mystic Falls liked to live up to its name after all. It was a mystery, one that had driven him mad and kept him here even after he knew he should’ve run.
Listening to the faint tinny sound of the radio, Deck slowly span himself around on the chair at the nurse’s station in the ER. The town was like a fish hook under your skin, driving you mad with the irritation of it but keeping you on the line. He’d blamed Alex for it at first. She’d been the one to get that hook lodged but it hadn’t disappeared when she’d moved on. It had stayed in place, the barbs digging deeper until he wasn’t sure what was up and what was down. Working his tongue between his teeth, lamenting that he’d eaten the last of the food Lauren had sent in with Nick an hour earlier, Deck stared down the hallway at the trauma room where the girl had come in a couple of months ago. Torn to shreds the same as Soph, the excuse another wild animal attack.
It was bull. There were things out there, things he was more than half sure of.
As the image of the human body he’d found the morning after the full moon flickered into his mind, Deck twisted away, reaching out to crank the radio up a little bit. The only person they had in right now was a drunk strapped up to a banana bag in exam 3. Nothing to burn the image of the life he’d taken out of his mind. He rotated his head, hearing his neck cracked as he snagged the next chart up off of the pile he had next to him. If there was one thing a slow night was good for it was getting caught up on paperwork. The bane of every doctor’s life, the curse on his tonight.
Letting out a disgusted sound Deck tossed the chart aside and flopped back in the chair. He spun it around, once, twice, pausing as he saw someone coming along the hallway towards the desk. For a moment he went to sit up but then he spotted the scrubs and stayed put, offering Dr. LeRoux a crooked grin upside down. ”If you’re down here looking for action you might be a little out of luck. Not much on this evening.” He grimaced as he realised how close he’d come to saying it was morgue quiet. ”You got anything coming in?” he asked, a faint gleam coming into his eye as he straightened up. At this point he’d take just about anything to avoid sitting there alone with his thoughts, constrained by Dr. Williams’ ludicrous list of rules.

Julian had grown so used to being rushed off his feet while he was at the hospital that he often didn’t know quite what to do with himself on the quieter days. There were often a lot more people coming through the doors of the Emergency Department as a result of the high supernatural presence in Mystic Falls, something that Julian himself was a part of, but they had other cases to deal with as well. Julian had never known just how many people in town knew the truth about the supernatural world or were a part of it himself until recently and it honestly was astounding. While he was growing up his parents had never lied to him about what they were, in fact they had told him from a pretty young age what he would become when he was old enough so that he could be prepared for it and it had been the same for each of his siblings when they had come along as well. His family had done well at flying under the radar ever since they had moved to Mystic Falls generations ago and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way because the town was his home despite the increased presence of hunters that seemed to have been drawn to the town as well. There were always going to be those who sought to do others harm but for Julian it was the complete opposite. He wanted nothing more than to help people and his family weren’t killers like some were. None of them had ever taken a life and even though his best friend had it had been an accident and self defence. He liked to think that they were proof that not all supernaturals were bad but a lot of people often didn’t see that. Thankfully most of the people in Julian’s life had no idea what he was so he didn’t have to worry about what they might think of him. He had a few colleagues at the hospital that were supernatural themselves and they covered for each other when they needed to but for the most part it didn’t really change things for him that much aside from the obvious not being able to work during the full moon. Getting the time off was a lot easier now that Jess was a werewolf too but he still wished that things could have worked out differently for her. He knew that Brady had done the right thing since she would have died without the bite but it still hadn’t been easy for her so he had been doing his best to help her as much as he could given that she was not just his boss but his best friend’s girl as well. That day there seemed to be nothing that needed to be done, though, and that bothered Julian. His rounds were done and all of his patients were fine for the time being so he decided to check in with a few of the other departments and he felt a smile work its way across his words at Dr Decker’s words. “It’s too quiet, it feels like this might be the calm before the storm,” he admitted. It was never this quiet and he couldn’t shake the feeling that this was all just building up to something but he knew that only time would tell. “Nothing at the moment. I checked in with a few of the paramedics and its all quiet on the radios too.” It was eerie to say the least and Julian really didn’t like it but he knew that they might as well do something with their time so he pulled a pack of cards out of his pocket and held them up. “Feel like heading to the lounge for a game?” he asked, knowing that it wouldn’t hurt to grab a drink and have some down time since nothing much seemed to be happening at the moment. The groan left Deck’s mouth before he could rein it back in. He shifted uncomfortably, grimacing at Dr. Leroux upside down. Quiet was something he’d abhorred for so long. It meant being left alone with his thoughts. They’d skitter uncomfortably in his mind, the things he’d rather forget welling up the moment there was no longer something there to occupy him. He’d hated every damn moment of it, almost chewing off his own arm to make the radio in the ER sound just so that he knew something, anything was coming in so he’d have something to do other than dwell on what had happened. These days he wasn’t so keen to curse the whole department just for the sake of his own mental health.
Deck straightened up, clucking his tongue as he swung the chair around. He planted his elbows on the edge of the desk, tapping his fingers on the charts he’d been working his way through before boredom had sent him into the chair spinning doldrums of a man who wouldn’t have minded some form of occupation. ”You’ve cursed us now,” he crooned. ”You used the Q word.” Shaking his head, Deck pushed to his feet. He dragged a hand through his hair, down over his face as he stretched out the kinks sitting in the chair for over an hour had put in him. A crack, a loosening of a tight muscle and he was giving out a little grunt of relief.
If there was a storm on the way now he didn’t want to be sat behind the desk, spinning himself in circles when it arrived. The curse wasn’t real, he knew that well enough but now the itch was between his shoulder blades and Deck knew it would send him insane. Dark eyes narrowed as he glanced over at the exam room where he could still just about hear the drunk snoring lightly through the closed door. ”It’s been that way all night,” he admitted. ”Benny was our last guest in. Given the way he was smelling when he came in, it’s probably gonna be the morning before he manages to come around from his stupor. I’m pretty sure he’s probably got a few minor wounds if you wanna occupy yourself?” he suggested, that trace of a crooked grin back on his face again. Few ever got close to their frequent flyer drunks, the smell alone capable of getting you drunk on the job.
He’d got a big enough noseful when Benny had been brought in easier, that, Deck thought, was a joy he didn’t want to experience again. Deck caught sight of the pack of cards the surgeon pulled from his pocket as he turned back and grinned wolfishly at the man. Now that was a pastime he could get on board with. ”Sure,” he crowed lightly. ”I’ve spent God only knows how many hours beating people with a deck. What did you have in mind? Poker, blackjack, a little game of Old Maid?” It had always been poker on the bases he’d served on across the world. For men who weren’t paid well enough for what they did in the first place, soldiers were more than happy to throw away what they did have in their pockets on endless games of Texas Hold ‘Em. After years of playing it with his dad’s men first, Deck was more than happy to help part his team from that money … and just as happy to funnel it back into drinks and treats from the commissary for them later. He might’ve been a card sharp but he wasn’t a jerk with it.

One thing Julian tended to struggle with was the hospital when it was quiet. It didn’t tend to happen too often but that day things had calmed down and with all of his patients settled for the time being Julian found himself at a bit of a loss. Having grown up in Mystic Falls he was used to the fact that there was always something going on in the town and the hospital was usually no exception to that rule. The place was always busy, usually due to the amount of attacks that the police put down to being animal attacks, but they had their fair share of car crashes and other accidents as well. Julian never knew what he was going to see from one shift to the next but that was what made his job interesting and he liked the way that it always kept him on his toes. He had known for a long time that he had wanted to become a doctor and it was the desire to go to medical school after he finished his years at college that had stopped him from going on the trip that Brady and the rest of their friends had. So many of them had ended up dying and Julian had thought that his best friend was among them and it had made him even more determined than ever to make his dream of becoming a doctor come true. Being able to work in his home town was a lot better than he had hoped and it made it easier since he knew a lot of the people who lived there already. He had been there long enough to know a lot of the people that he worked with quite well too so he had a feeling that it wouldn’t be too difficult to find something to do until the next wave of patients came in. “Call me crazy but I’d rather it was busy than like this,” Julian admitted, knowing that there wasn’t anything that could make him feel more uneasy at the moment than a quiet hospital. “I’m not used to sitting around twiddling my thumbs.” He knew that he should probably make the most of the chance to relax for a while but the truth was that he had always preferred keeping busy even when he was younger and his siblings had certainly made that easy for him. “I’m good, thanks,” he chuckled, knowing that he definitely wasn’t bored enough or crazy enough to take Deck up on that offer. He had dealt with his fair share of drunks over the years and it was never worth it. A smile touched his lips as Deck agreed to a game of cards although his expression soon turned thoughtful for a moment as he considered what game they should play. “Normally I would say poker but I feel like something a little different for a change so how about blackjack?” he suggested, knowing that it would be good to go for something different for once. Just sitting had never been something he was good at. Long before Soph had died and his nerves had been left permanently raw beneath his skin he’d been the sort of man who was always on the move. As a kid he’d burned that energy off with Lucas, racing around Fort Benning or on the ice playing hockey until their arms and legs had felt like jello. After the crash it had all changed, their dad dragging them back to Texas to have the support of their grandparents around, but that energy had still buzzed there. In war it had helped, in Mystic Falls it had been a curse. In the Dr. Williams had read him the riot act over it, forcing him to try and change his ways. Fat chance of that fully succeeding, Deck thought, remaining craned over the back of the wheeled chair as he watched Dr. Leroux. He tried, honestly he did, but moments like this still grated. Like a race horse he’d been able to practically feel his muscles twitching, ready to throw him into the next emergency situation. Instead of one coming crashing in through the ambulance bay doors or the radio buzzing frantically into life it had been Leroux maybe his way into the near empty ER instead.
Straightening up, turning in the chair, Deck shot the guy a wry grin. At least he wasn’t the only one struggling with the Q word that seemed to have settled over the whole hospital tonight. He snorted, stretching until his spine popped and muscles left cramped by sitting around for so long loosened slightly. ”You’re not crazy, not yet anyway,” Deck confirmed. He yawned, scrubbing his fingertips through the scruff that darkened his jaw. ”Both of us might end up ready for the psych ward if this carries on much longer though.” Dark eyes drifted to the ambulance bay doors, that same wistfulness filling him as he hoped they had been cursed by those words in a way. ”It makes two of us,” he admitted tightly at he looked back. At lest he’d had a single patient to deal with, albeit one whose main medical issue was going to be dealt with by the banana bag currently running into his arm.
He had glanced back towards the exam room where the drunk was sleeping his bender off as he’d mentioned Benny but as Leroux refused his offer Deck looked back at the man and grinned. One dark brow rose, his grin broadening. Benny was the sort they assigned to the med students as a teaching lesson when they came in, the sort most struggled to treat often due to the stench alone. ”You sure?” he offered. He’d make sure Benny was totally buffed up before he left anyway, even if nobody else was going to join him in the exam room to make it happen. After the game of cards though, when Benny was awake and could at least hold a conversation. He could’ve dropped back into a seat for the game but he’d end up numb to the neck from sitting too long. Deck propped himself against the counter instead, dark eyes narrowing and going shrewd. ”Now that’s more my speed than Old Maid,” he admitted. ”So this is what your lot do upstairs when we’re not keeping you busy in the OR?” There’d always been a rivalry between surgery and the ER in a way, although seemingly less so here in Mystic Falls than there had been in most of the other departments he’d worked for.

Julian was used to things being busy at the hospital and the truth was that that was when he was in his element. He wasn’t so used to having downtime these days so he often found himself not too sure what to do with it when it did present itself. Normally even just thinking that things were quiet at work was just asking for trouble, the last time someone had said those words out loud they’d had a multiple vehicle accident less than ten minutes later. It was one of those things that it was much better not to say and some of them had learned that the hard way. Right now Julian definitely needed something to do to keep him occupied for a while though and having some company for a while definitely wasn’t a bad idea. “You’re not wrong about that. I’m not used to having free time on my hands,” Julian admitted. There was usually always something to do at work and when he wasn’t there he was making sure that his family and pack were alright. Julian hadn’t realised how much he took it for granted that things were often busy but he knew that he wasn’t going to make that same mistake again. “Just wait, soon enough we’ll be rushed off our feet again and then we’ll be wondering why we were worried,” he chuckled. It was always the way of things and Julian wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing ended up happening again. The start of his shift had been busy but right now things had calmed down and that was something that he wasn’t used to at all. “Yeah, I’m sure. I’m not that desperate for something to do,” he grinned. The guy was one of their frequent flyers so Julian had dealt with him in the past and he knew that he would much rather not go through that again if he could help it. There were a lot of things that he would much rather be doing and he felt a smile touch his lips as Deck said that blackjack was more his speed. “I was hoping you would say that,” he admitted. Playing cards during quiet moments was something that a lot of the doctors seemed to end up doing and Julian was no exception. It was something that was quick to play and it never mattered if they ended up getting interrupted by patients coming in so it made a lot of sense. “I like to help out around the ER as well but a lot of surgeons do, it keeps our minds sharp,” he nodded. “Sometimes we play for money but it’s mostly just to give us something to do.”GREG DECKER

Eventually the itch in him would grow. His ears would strain against the silence, trying to hear something coming to relieve the doldrums that had left him drifting like a ship without wind filling its sails. He needed to occupiy himself before what grew inside of him exploded out. Anxiety was a powder keg, one that didn’t take much to explode. Deck could feel it fizzling under his skin, that awful wait for things to kick off, because even without those things happening in this town there was plenty here to cause trouble.
Deck hummed low in his throat, aiming a wry grin at Julian as he slumped back in his seat. ”That’s the ER doc’s curse. They get you working these crazy busy shifts, and then you don’t know what to do with yourself when it … isn’t like that.” He wasn’t about to put that Q word out into the universe. Sighing, Deck stared at the ambulance bar doors, almost wistfully. ”I don’t know whether I should be grateful for it then, or pissed that the break’s over. You’ve put it out there now...” Like a wide open invitation to the universe to do its worst. He felt a shiver work its way through his gut. The last thing he wanted was that sort of case rolling in, leaving him struggling to function.
Even his drunk would’ve been too much to handle at that point. Deck pushed the thought from his much, chuckling at the refusal Julian tossed in his direction. If it hadn’t been for the complete lack of cases, he wouldn’t have been rushing to deal with Benny either. Beggers couldn’t be choosers though. ”This carries on much longer and you might regret turning it down,” Deck warned him. He’d see the case out anyway. It didn’t matter that the man would be back again in a few days, what he could do for him now was all that mattered. Treat who you could, because one day there were going to be things that you couldn’t help and then you’d never every possible win balancing out your scales.
Rubbing his hands together, Deck eyed the surgeon over the top of the desk. After years of filling boredom on bases with little more than a deck of cards, you built up some skill with them – well, it was that or lose fifty dollars and a couple of care packages from home on bets you lost. Pulling away from the desk, Deck started backing towards the lounge. ”A little preoccupation never hurt anybody. Keeps you sharper than a nap in the on-call room most of the time at least.” In a bigger hospital there wouldn’t be much time for surgeons to sit around, but Mystic Falls was a place with its own tides when it came to that sort of thing. ”Do you want to lay money on it now, or should we play for bigger stakes? Like who takes care of Benny the next time he comes in.” Deck opened the door to the lounge, gestured Julian in ahead of him. ”After you.” He grabbed a cold soda from the fridge, settled down on the other side of the table with his elbows propped on the edge.

“You’re right about that but I knew what I was letting myself in for,” Julian chuckled. “There are much worse places to end up anyway,” he added with a grin. He had ended up working in a lot of different departments while he was training but he knew that this was what he wanted to be doing. He was always more comfortable being on the front lines where he could be of most use and that was never going to change. He was lucky in that he was able to work his shifts around the full moon, a lot of places probably wouldn’t be as understanding but it was a necessity for Julian and he was glad that his boss was able to give him that night off every month. “You’re not pinning that blame on me, you’re the one that said there wasn’t much going on first,” Julian laughed. He knew that it was too quiet and he couldn’t shake the feeling that it was just the calm before the storm but the truth was that he would rather that it was busy than like this. He preferred having something to focus on rather than sitting around waiting to see what was going to happen next so he hoped it would pick up but he knew that only time would tell. As Deck said that he might regret turning the offer down if it carried on like this for much longer, Julian shook his head. “Trust me, I’ll never be that bored,” he assured him. Dealing with drunks was one of his least favourite things to do especially when that drunk happened to be Benny. Julian had dealt with him before and he knew that he would much rather never have to do that again if he could help it. “I’ve had the pleasure of dealing with him before, that was enough.” It was something that he would never forget at least, that was for sure. Heading in the direction of the staff lounge, Julian nodded as Deck spoke. “You got that right. I gave up on sleeping while on shift ages ago, I always woke up feeling worse than I did when I fell asleep,” he admitted. Coffee and something to keep his mind busy was a much better option these days it seemed. “You’re really that eager to deal with him again, are you?” Julian chuckled, knowing that it wasn’t going to make it that easy for Deck to beat him. He had been doing this for a while now and back in college he had ended up making some decent money while he and Brady were playing against some of their friends so he would put up a fight at least. “Thanks,” he said, heading into the lounge and grabbing a drink from the fridge before taking a seat. “How about we do a little of both – lay down a bit of money and the loser also has to deal with Benny next time?” he suggested as he took a sip of his drink. ”That makes one of us that did.” Deck raised his hands like he was warding off the fall out from his joke. More people here knew what he’d done before than anywhere else he’d worked since he’d been discharged from the army, but he wasn’t sure how much Dr Leroux had heard on the rumour mill. ”Honestly, it’s not that different to how I worked before … only there are far less people shooting at me here.” That part was honest enough. You painted a target on your back when you set up camp in the middle of a warzone and unlike the Red Cross on MSF, the US army medical corps couldn’t walk straight onto a battle field with the expectation that nobody was going to fire at them. Still, even with those days and nights of shells coming down on the camp like rain, there were still those times when silence would filter in and then you sat dreading what was about to break it. Huffing out a breath, Deck kept up the serious act for a moment before he snorted. ”I didn’t say the word though, that was all on you, man.” And it would likely be the word they’d all blame for it when something major came bursting through the doors.
Deck was sure at this point that it was gonna be when rather than if. Karma had dealt him a shitty hand lately, it wouldn’t hesitate to smack him with something more now just to watch him crumble. Blue eyes narrowed faintly, fixing on Julian as they sparked with humour. ”Never say never,” he warned. With their little buddy back in the exam room it’d only be a matter of time before he rolled back in the doors again, and maybe next time he wouldn’t be on hand, desperate enough for a distraction to throw his hands up and volunteer. ”So that means you took one look at this time and bolted?” he asked, amusement in his tone. ”Oh I see how it is now.” Deck clucked his tongue, shaking his head like it actually disappointed him. They all seemed to take their Hippocratic oath seriously around here, frequent flyer or not, he didn’t imagine any of the staff would’ve let the guy suffer for long.
Benny was gonna be alright on his own for now, undoubtedly he’d call the nurses in if he happened to wake up and needed anything. Deck stood and led the way to the lounge, preparing for a distraction that wasn’t gonna come in the form of something violent and traumatic. ”They tell you combat naps are good for you,” Deck said on a snort. ”Maybe if you’re too exhausted to move another step, but the rest of the time it’s bullshit.” It had left him on edge at times, a lack of sleep always contributing more to the sense that he was losing his sanity. You thought you saw things, heard things, when you were too exhausted to think straight. The laugh rolled out of Deck loudly, although still loud enough to wake Benny up. ”I heard that surgeons were meant to be arrogant, but still…” He shook his head, dropping into his seat at the table. Deck popped open the can and smirked at Julian over the top of it. ”I’d say that’s a deal. Sweetens the pot so to speak.” For the winner at least. ”Deal us in, my man.” Already dipping into his pocket for his wallet, Deck pulled out a ten, reconsidered and slipped two down on the table for the moment instead.

“Don’t let anyone hear you say that too loudly or they’ll try and brainwash you,” Julian chuckled. He really had known what he was letting himself in for when he started working at the hospital but it wasn’t that way for everyone. He always tried to warn new doctors coming through about what it was like but words just couldn’t do any justice for how crazy it could get at times. He had heard whispers about Deck’s past but the truth was that Julian had never been the kind of person who liked listening to the gossip and that feeling had only grown after Brady made it back from Ecuador. Julian had heard so many theories about what had happened to his best friend over there and none of them had even come close so he knew better than to listen to rumours. “I’d say that’s a plus,” he admitted as Deck said that there were far less people shooting at him here. “Army?” he asked, knowing that it had to be the most obvious answer given what Deck had just said. Julian hadn’t gone through anything like that so he couldn’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like but at least the guy was here now. Mystic Falls itself could seem like a warzone at times especially with all the supernatural around but as far as he could tell Deck was human so he knew better than to say that. As Deck said he hadn’t said the word, Julian rolled his eyes in amusement. “I don’t buy into the whole thing about a word causing bad things to happen, it’s more about the sentiment and you’re the one who started that,” he shrugged. Truth be told it was a little too quiet for Julian’s liking right now but he also knew that chances were it wouldn’t stay like that for long so he knew to make the most of it while it lasted. “Trust me, I mean it,” Julian assured him. He really had dealt with Benny before and he knew that he was never going to be bored enough to willingly deal with him again. The first time had been bad enough and while Benny himself wasn’t a bad guy, Julian was pretty sure that none of them particularly liked having to deal with him when he came in. “Too right. That’s one of the perks of being a surgeon first, I can escape dealing with other patients when I need to,” he chuckled. Truth be told it didn’t happen too often unless there was an emergency that he had to attend to and he always made sure that there was someone else who could cover if he had to make a break for it. “I’ve never bought into that, a cup of decent coffee is much better than a terrible nap,” he admitted as they headed towards the lounge. Julian had to be careful since a lack of sleep could make it difficult for him to stay in control but he had grown used to it and he knew the signs so he always made sure not to let it get too bad. As Deck said that he’d heard surgeons were meant to be arrogant, Julian couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s not arrogance if it’s true,” he countered, an amused smile forming on his face as he took his seat and pulled out a pack of cards. “Great,” he nodded as Deck agreed to the terms. Taking a sip of his drink, Julian started dealing the cards before reaching for his own wallet and laying down the same amount of money for good measure. “Let’s see what you can do,” he challenged before looking at his own cards. Remembering the way the vampire had stopped him from screaming with just a word, Deck swallowed hard at the word brainwashed. He had to force a laugh out past the constriction, feeling like it would tear his throat wide open. ”They can try, I’m pigheaded to the core.” And that had been the problem when the army bigwigs were trying to help after Soph had died. He’d been unable to bend, terrified that he would entirely break if he’d tried to. A broken soldier was a useless one. God he’d hated the thought, but from here Deck could see that they’d done the right thing for him. ”Mmhmm,” Deck muttered at Julia’s question. ”75th Ranger Regiment - after John Hopkins. That was on the Army’s dime.” A first class education in exchange for his service. He’d given that for years before he’d been discharged. Even if Julian wasn’t superstitious about calling things quiet around here, the army had been and that had carried over with him just enough that Deck found himself glancing at the door. ”You say that now,” he muttered. They’d see.
After a while you got used to the rhythm of a place, could predict it almost like you were psychic. It was at that point that he usually ran. That level of familiarity meant that you were getting too close to people and for years that had left him itchy. He probably should’ve felt that more considering who he’d been dealing with, but Deck just flopped back into his seat, chuckling this time. ”I guess we’ll just have to see who draws the short straw the next time.” Or who’d willingly grab it – like him. Deck clucked his tongue like he was disappointed at Julian’s admission, but that was both the beauty and the curse of being a surgeon. Running when you didn’t want to deal with something (sorry, the OR’s calling!) or being pulled away to operate when all you wanted to do was see a case through. It was a double-edged sword. ”Now I know your trick, I can work around it.” He narrowed his eyes at the surgeon, but the grin was still there on his face. That sort of move could wait for when he was really desperate.
”The Army doesn’t give you more of a choice when it comes to that sort of thing. It’s their way or no way.” Most of the time at least. These days he rarely got desperate enough to exist on a diet of coffee alone – although a single cup probably still wouldn’t do much for him. ”A cup or a bucket?” Deck asked, winging a brow as he swept into the break room. Something like this was just as good for keeping him awake, and for chasing those wayward thoughts away too. ”And there it is,” he said with a snort aiming a finger at Julian like he was pinning down the guy’s ego with it. If he won the game then maybe Julian’s ego would be in pieces too small to pin down. Deck sprawled back, the very image of chill. He stared down at his cards for a moment, considering the ace and four before he peeled a ten off his pile and pushed it into the middle of the table. ”Hit me,” he said confidently. That was the beauty of pulling an ace in his cards. It could go either way for him. A five card hard was gonna be hard to beat – if he got that lucky.
