Scott and the others hadn’t exactly been tiptoeing around him – he wasn’t sure if Stiles wad actually capable of doing it anyway, his default was to charge into every situation at high speed – but it had felt like they were all holding their breath, waiting for something to give. That something being him. If he hadn’t been given some sort of hope by Scott’s offer to give him the bite, maybe he would’ve done. Hammering on Alix’s door in the middle of the night, taking that desperate need for all of this to change too far. He’d burned bridges there, the latest in a long line. It would take some serious crawling on his knees to change that, and while he’d taken small steps away from who he had been, Derek didn’t know if he was capable of that yet. That would’ve been a Stiles like leap instead of the slow crawl that’d worked on other parts of his life.
Not taking Erica’s words to heart, Derek smiled wryly. He dipped his head in a mock bow before he settled back in his seat. There was still plenty of room for him to be better, but until he knew whether or not the bite was going to take, most of those plans were on hold. ”It wasn’t useful,” he said dryly, his mouth settling into a thin line for a moment. Things with Alix were bound to have fallen apart eventually, but Stiles suspicions about her had definitely helped to start things snowballing. Derek puffed out a breath, shaking his head faintly. ”One day he’s finally gonna get so far in over his head he can’t get out.” In this town it would’ve been easy for that to happen. Even with all of them standing by, watching each other’s backs, there were things here that made what had happened back in Beacon Hills look like child’s play.
For that reason alone he shouldn’t have been encouraging Erica to bring her brother to Mystic Falls, but from the sound of things he’d be better off here with his sister, and a pack looking to protect him from the nightmares that were here, than with his parents back there. Derek’s brows furrowed faintly, but his lips curved into a ghost of a smile. ”We don’t always get a choice with when we lose that, but I get what you mean,” he assured her. His mom had allowed him to be just that up until his teens, maybe she’d protected him that way for too long. When Paige had died, something inside of him had been torn out and things were never quite the same again. Shifting in his seat, Derek tapped his fingers against the edge of his menu. His brows rose slightly as she smiled. He had meant it, he’d have her back no matter what, and he knew the pack would too. ”Me?” Suppressing a smile, Derek pursed his lips and shook his head. ”I’ve got no clue what you’re talking about.” But the wheels were already turning. Peter had questioned the expansion of the pack, but there was a reason why it worked better now than it ever had when he was Alpha.
He'd fought it when Scott and the others had tried to pile advice on him – all those little tricks for dragging himself out of his own head that had failed miserably. Maybe it’d just been just frame of mind, but now it felt like there was room for it. Room enough to have him letting out a faint groan. ”Something part time.” Hobbies likely wouldn’t stick, not when his mind always circled around to what he wasn’t supposed to be focusing on, he’d give it a try though. A new leaf turned over in more ways than just the physical. ”Maybe that’s your new line of work, a life coach. There’s probably plenty of people in town who could do with it.” Some part of him would try and dig his heels in, no matter what, but Erica had never been a push over. He’d known that before he’d ended up turning her. Derek waved off her assurance that she wouldn’t clean up after him as he dropped his hand away from hers. He could see the waitress winding her way back with their plates and hoped she didn’t think the grimace was for her. ”Being stuck in a tomb’s not as fun as it seems. They’ve gotta be pretty desperate to stay put there. It was awful … for him and Melissa.” He puffed out his cheeks, laughing lightly as the plates were set down. The mental image of a caged animal pacing its tiny cell came to mind.

Erica knew that she could have gone anywhere and done anything after she made it back from the Other Side and she had travelled around America for a while but the truth was that the whole time she had found herself wanting to be around people who knew who she really was and that she had been through. She hadn’t really had any friends back in Beacon Hills, not until Derek bit her and the two of them, Boyd and Isaac became their own little family, and she had missed having that connection. She hadn’t known how to find Derek but she had figured that where Scott and the others went, Derek wouldn’t be far behind. Scott hadn’t been a part of their pack but she had seen the way the two of them were like brothers and tracking the pack down had proved to be much easier than tracking down Derek. As it was she had ended up running into Stiles after her first full moon in town and he had ended up seeing a little more than he’d bargained for but now it finally felt like things were getting back on the right track. Learning that Boyd had died hurt but she knew that she wasn’t going to give up on finding a way to bring him back. For now she knew that she needed to start living her life properly, though, and that started now. As Derek said that Stiles’ breaking and entering wasn’t useful, Erica’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment as she studied Derek carefully. “Why do I get the feeling that there’s a story there?” she asked. Stiles had always known how to get under Derek’s skin and it didn’t look like that had changed but now she was curious about what had happened and she hoped that Derek would fill her in. As he spoke again, Erica nodded. “Maybe so but he has Scott and the others to bail him out when the time comes,” she offered. They would be there for him no matter what and deep down Erica had always envied him for that. “I know we don’t but Harley is far too young. This world is dangerous and I need to keep him out of it for as long as possible,” Erica signed. She knew that meant that she couldn’t see her brother again but it was a sacrifice she knew that she would make if it meant that he got to have a normal life. She wasn’t sure how her mom was doing at actually being a mom this time around but she hoped the woman was doing better for Harley’s sake. As Derek pretended like he had no idea what she was talking about when she said that he was probably already coming up with a plan, Erica rolled her eyes playfully. “Sure you don’t,” she teased. Truth be told Erica had expected Derek to flat out refuse when she suggested finding him some hobbies or a job so he didn’t end up getting lost in his own head so much. Erica knew what it was like to focus on just one thing for too long and she knew that it wasn’t healthy. Derek deserved to live a full life and if she could help him with that then she knew that she would. As he agreed to something part time, though, she felt a smile touch her lips. “That was easier than I thought,” she admitted. “What kind of thing would you like to do?” she asked. She had a few things already in mind for Derek if he couldn’t come up with anything but she wanted to see if he had any ideas in mind first. As he said that maybe she should be a life coach, Erica couldn’t help but laugh. “Definitely not. I don’t care about people enough to want to help them fix their lives, you’re an exception,” she shrugged. The pack were as well but she knew that she wasn’t going to say that out loud just yet. “Besides, I’m still a teenager. I need to finish high school before I do anything else,” she added. It sucked but that was the way it had to be. She refused to just drop out and not do anything with her life so she was going to make sure that she got to where she needed to be. A small smile touched Erica’s lips as Derek said that it was awful for Scott and Melissa having him stay with them. “Maybe so but they still let you because you’re family,” she shrugged as she took a sip of her drink. If it hadn’t been for Scott and Stiles maybe he would’ve still been in the wall. It wasn’t an outcome Derek liked to think about. Somebody else might’ve stumbled on the tomb eventually but by then he probably would’ve been an anonymous tumble of bones – just like so many of the other bodies that turned up in this town. They hadn’t exactly been looking for him out there. The last time he’d been seen he’d been in Mystic Falls. Pure luck had led them to him. From there on out though it had all been hard work to claw his way free of what those things had turned him into. Scott was leading the way on trying to change things back – his would be the bite that would hopefully turn him back to who he’d been before. Others had helped though, including Stiles. And Alix. She was still a sticky subject, one that left him with that lead weight of guilt settling in the pit of his stomach. Stiles had planted the seeds of doubt about her in his brain on the day he’d broken in and there was no denying that had contributed to the way he’d blown up at her about being one of them.
Heat rose in Dereks cheeks, his gaze diverting away from Erica as she seemed to study him. He was surprised that hadn’t been part of Stiles’ rapid fire history of what had happened since Erica had … since Erica had left. ”I wasn’t alone when he broke in,” he explained tightly, not going further into it than that. The rest of it was a story that wasn’t his alone to tell and he wasn’t about to paint another target on Alix’s back when she already had enough problems of her own to be dealing with. Stiles had left her alone at least, maybe. He had other things to poke his nose into for now. ”Sometimes even they’re not enough.” And he hated saying it. All of them had suffered enough, but these weren’t battles he could entirely save them from. They hadn’t been enough to stop what had happened to Allison when the nogitsune had taken up residence in Stiles. Sometimes the people you tried to shield hardest were the ones that got hurt the most. With Harley still in Beacon Hills Derek was sure that he was going to be able to stay out of it all for as long as Erica wanted him to. ”However you want to handle it with him, we’ll back you up,” Derek promised.
It felt like a weight taken off when the subject gave way to something lighter, the innocent look he’d pasted on lingering when Erica tried to call him on it again. He shook his head like he had no idea what Erica had been talking about. If trying to rearrange his life gave her something to take her mind off of her little brother she was welcome to do it. ”You haven’t got me a contract yet,” Derek reminded her with a smirk. ”You mean other than mooching around town, brooding and scaring small children?” That’d pretty much been his life since his mom had died. ”Honestly … there hasn’t been much time the last couple of years to figure that sort of thing out.” Not when life had been marked by so many brutal episodes.
Derek hummed as Erica tried to brush off the idea of a change of career for her, shaking his head. ”Caring doesn’t come into it too much when they’re willing to pay you for it.” He could’ve done that. Money had never been enough of an issue that he’d had to work. He settled back as the plates appeared, snagging a couple of fries before he glanced back up at Erica. ”Have you registered at the high school? Being family means I’m not gonna put all of that on them again if I can help it.” That had meant getting on his own two feet here in town and he’d managed it in time to try and do that for Erica now too.

Erica knew Derek quite well given everything that they had been through but she couldn’t deny that she was surprised when he said that he wasn’t alone when Stiles broke in. “Really?” she asked, a smile forming on her face as she looked over at him. “Tell me, who is she? Are you still seeing each other? Will I need to get used to seeing her around?” she asked, knowing that she needed all the details. Derek hadn’t been involved with anyone when she met him and she couldn’t deny that she was intrigued. Derek had been through so much and if he had found someone who made him happy then she really was happy for him. It wasn’t really any of her business but if they were going to be living together then she knew that she wanted to make sure she knew who was going to be around. “Maybe but they’ll always come through in the end,” Erica shrugged. She had seen that back in Beacon Hills and it was something that she wanted to be a part of now that she had the chance. “Thank you, I appreciate that,” she said sincerely as Derek said that they would back her up with whatever she decided with Harley. She wanted to reach out to her brother and bring him here but at the same time she wasn’t sure that it was safe so she knew that perhaps he was better off with her mom, at least for now. If she did decide to go and get Harley then she didn’t doubt that Derek would come up with a plan to make it happen and she honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he already had. He was so good at things like that and he always had been. “Maybe not but give me time and I will,” she smirked as Derek said she hadn’t gotten him a contract yet. She had managed to get herself a job after arriving in town so she knew that it was just a matter of time before she found something for Derek as well. Anything would be better than him sitting around thinking about the Dread Doctors all the time. “I get that but you’re settled here now so it’s time for you to figure out what you want to do,” she said, offering him a gentle smile. “Believe me when I say you can’t keep doing nothing, you’ll lose your mind,” she added. Derek had so much going for him and she wanted him to be happy. “You’ve got a point there but I still couldn’t stand telling people what to do with their lives when I don’t know what I’m doing with my own most of the time,” she shrugged. She had spent such a long time travelling the country looking for Derek and the others and now that she had found them she knew that she had school to think about but other than that she wasn’t sure what she was going to do just yet although she at least had time to figure it out. “Yeah, I have. I start in a few days,” she nodded as she took a bite of her meal. It was for the best, it would only draw attention to her if she didn’t enrol in school and she didn’t want anyone looking into her past too much. “You have me you can lean on now as well, we’ll look out for each other.”DEREK HALE

His love life had always been more of a discussion for the pack than he’d been comfortable with it being. Kate, Paige, Jennifer, even Braeden. Each woman who’d been involved with her had either been dragged into the mess, or had fought their way into it. No amount of telling them all to butt out or trying to make it clear that it had no impact on anything worked and some part of him knew that it was for the best when they were so connected with what was going on. Alix hadn’t really fallen into either of those categories. If it hadn’t been for her investigating the Dread Doctors it was likely their paths wouldn’t have crossed in the first place. She had though and what had been left between them was a tangled mess that neither one of them seemed to want to try and unpick.
”Really,” Derek said dryly. Heat tried to rise in his face the moment he caught sight of Erica’s smile. He hissed out a sigh and shook his head. ”Just someone who was looking into the same things we were. She’s not really a part of things anymore.” It was better for her that she wasn’t. "You might see Braeden around though. She’s been helping since you were … since Deucalion and his pack showed up in Beacon Hills.” Everything that had happened afterwards was going to have to be explained later. Deucalion was the least of his problems, but there was still a risk that he would appear, just to compound their misery again. If he did – he wasn’t about to curse himself by saying when – then the pack would deal with him, as they had everything else. Derek grunted at Erica’s assurance of that, his expression softening a moment later as she thanked him. He nodded, one corner of his mouth twitching. ”You’re welcome.”
If Erica wanted to repay the favour by trying to find him something to occupy his time, then there was no real way he was going to be able to stop it happening. Other than Cora – and Peter, although Derek wasn’t sure his uncle was worth the title – he didn’t exactly have blood family watching out for him now. The pack were just as stubborn as Talia had been, and no matter how hard he pushed back about being left to do what he chose to, they were keep pushing back. He let out a huff of amusement, shaking his head. ”I’ve managed it before, I’m pretty sure I can manage it a few years longer,” he tried arguing. It wasn’t like they didn’t have other threats on the horizon, just waiting for the opportunity to swoop in and wreck their lives. Dark brows rose as Erica pushed away the thought of coaching stubborn assholes like him for a living. ”But you’ll do it for free with us?” Because she cared. He was never gonna be able to separate that side of things from the rest.
At least she was getting it figured out now. School would be the start of it, even if the pack had all finished high school by now. They’d support Erica through that change and would make sure she had the same opportunities the rest of them had done. ”That gives you some time to settle in.” Derek picked up his glass like he’d make a toast with it. ”Watching each other’s backs again. Here’s to both of us staying out of trouble.” He took a sip before nudging his glass aside and focusing on his food. Of course that was easier said than done in Mystic Falls, just as it had been back home in Beacon Hills, but they could hope.
