To begin with Erica hadn’t known what had happened when she’d ended up on the Other Side. It had taken her a while to figure it all out but as soon as she had she’d known that she’d needed to find a way to get back to the land of the living. She had left Derek’s pack because she had thought that she and the others would end up dying and she had talked Boyd into going with her. He was her closest friend and deep down she had known that he’d been worried about the same thing. He never would have let her go alone but in the end it was that decision to leave and find another pack that had resulted in Erica dying. She hadn’t known what had happened to Boyd until Stiles had explained it to her after she found her way back, she had spent such a long time looking for all of them and she had thought that she would find them all in one place since she knew how they all stuck together but Boyd wasn’t with them and now she knew why. Stiles had caught her up with some of what was going on and so had Scott. Cora was the person aside from Derek that she had been most eager to see, though, and seeing him now really was enough to make her feel like she was back where she belonged. Derek hadn’t told her everything that would happen when he’d offered her the bite but he had told her enough and after she became a werewolf he had given her a home and a family that was so much better than the one she’d left behind. She had still looked out for Harley but otherwise she couldn’t have left her mom behind quick enough and the only reason she’d returned to Beacon Hills at all was so that she could say goodbye to her baby brother. “No he didn’t, he said that it would be best if you filled me in about that,” Erica explained. She knew that it was never easy for Stiles to keep things to himself but he’d managed it with that and now she couldn’t deny that she was curious. She had heard that Derek had been turned into a shapeshifter and the truth was that she didn’t know how that was possible. Scott had told her about the Dread Doctors but it still didn’t make much sense to her and she didn’t know why they would have gone after Derek of all people but she hoped that his plan to have Scott bite him worked because she knew how difficult it must be for him to have been turned into something else. “It will work, I know it will. It has to,” Erica said, doing her best to make her voice sound full of confidence. She knew that the bite could do incredible things, after all she was proof of that, but whether or not something like that was possible she had no idea although she hoped that it would work with every fibre of her being. Watching as Derek drove them in the direction of the Grill, Erica’s eyes were fixed on the road as he asked if she was sure Boyd was on the Other Side like she was. “He has to be,” she said, knowing that she needed it to be true. If anyone could have found peace and moved on then chances were that Boyd could but either way she knew that she needed to find out and if she could then she had to bring him back. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle the cooking,” Erica assured him, a smile forming on her face as she looked over at Derek. “I’ve got a few recipes I can try out on both of you, I know you’ll love them.” She’d picked up a few things during her travels and she was more than happy to put those skills to good use now, especially since Derek was giving her the chance to get out of the dingy motel she had been staying in and have a real roof over her head as well as her family back. “Thank you,” Erica said sincerely as Derek said that she was family. That really did mean a lot to her after everything that she had been through and she knew that she had missed them so much. “Definitely, I don’t want to have to spend a minute longer there than I have to,” she admitted before climbing out of the vehicle as they reached the Grill and waiting for Derek to join her before heading inside. Stiles could be the world’s biggest pain in the ass but if there was one thing he could do was dig. In Beacon Hills it had painted a target on his back constantly – him, Peter, a dozen others putting pressure on that weak link to get what they wanted out of the situation, and what they needed out of him. Derek wished he could’ve said it had changed with the move to Mystic Falls but Stiles was still the holder of the cards. The one running through those nine lives as curiosity made a damn good try at killing that cat. If anybody in Mystic Falls could’ve given Erica a run down on what had happened it would’ve been him but maybe the warnings he’d shoved at Stiles, with fingers clawed into the front of Stiles’ hoodie had finally taken hold.
Or maybe there just hadn’t been time as Stiles had brought Erica back into town. This wasn’t just a little bed time story about him going missing, there were layers to this story and Derek wasn’t sure he’d seen all of them himself yet. Derek huffed out a breath out, his stomach twisting for a moment. ”The one time in his life Stiles was quiet.” Another slow breath, steadying that part inside of him that wanted to twist itself up in a knot. ”We still don’t know,” Derek admitted gruffly. ”I remember being there in the loft. One minute it was normal, the next it all went black. It must’ve taken them days at least to get me here but I don’t remember anything for weeks.” A growl to the world. He tried to push those memories to the surface but even with the help Alix had given him before they’d parted ways, they’d stubbornly refused to budge. The Dread Doctors had taken him, changed him, and for who knew how long, had left him in that tomb in the woods.
Maybe the bite from Scott would change that, breaking the memories free being turned into something else seemed to when it came to vampire compulsion, that mental block shattered as the mould his body had been forced into was shattered too. Derek sank his teeth into his lip, nodded slowly. They could all be as confident as they wanted but until Scott bit him there was no way to know for sure. An axe hanging over his head, one he could escape if only he’d accept the bigger evil.
Boyd had done that when he’d practically sacrificed himself for him. Derek could still feel his betas blood on his hands. He rubbed his palms against the steering wheel like he could scrub the feeling away. There was a rough note in his voice as he glanced over at Erica. ”There’s a chance he has found peace…” he warned. You couldn’t bring anybody back from that, but stripping away hope was a dangerous game, especially for somebody who was only just back themselves. They all had enough scars as it was and if letting Erica stay at the apartment helped fade a few of hers, he’d do it. After all, she wasn’t just pack, she was practically family.
Derek made a low sound in his throat, glancing at Erica dubiously. His reputation in the kitchen had already spread far enough, not he was gonna have to bow to it and allow Erica to handle putting together something edible. ”We’ll get you one of those white hats,” he offered dryly, humour hidden beneath the words the way it often was, breaking out as he flashed his teeth in a faint grin at her as he pulled in at the curb. ”You don’t have to thank me,” he told her honestly. He should’ve been the one doing that, what he’d gotten out of turning her, Boyd and Isaac had been far more than they’d gotten from it. Derek slipped out of the truck, eyes scanning the street but shoulders loosening as he didn’t feel that tingle of danger. ”We’ll head back over after we’ve eaten.” A fresh start for both of them in a way. He pulled open the door to the Grill for Erica, held it for her. ”Table or bar?” he asked, slipping in behind her. Privacy or right out there in the open, metaphorical fingers stuck up at those who’d done this to him.

“Believe me, I’m just as surprised as you are,” Erica assured him. Stiles was rarely able to keep his mouth shut but somehow he had managed it while they had been driving back into town although she had a feeling that she would probably end up making him pay for keeping that from her later. She understood why he had done it, it wasn’t his story to tell but that never usually stopped him. Still there had been a lot for him to fill her in on so she knew that she should perhaps cut him a little slack for that, not to mention it had taken him a while to come to terms with the fact that she was back. A few years ago Erica never would have thought that any of this was possible but if she was honest she was getting to the point where very little scared her these days. Her life had changed completely the day that she had accepted the bite from Derek, she had found herself thrown into the supernatural world in a way that she never could have imagined and it had cost her her life once but she was older and wiser now and she knew that she wasn’t going to end up making those same mistakes again. She had turned her back on Derek and the others when she should have trusted in them and she knew that she wasn’t going to do let her fear control her like that again. “That’s insane. Do you know anything about the people who took you?” she asked, not sure whether they were any closer to finding out who they were or if they even had a starting point. “Scott mentioned that they go by the name the Dread Doctors and they’ve been taking a lot of people but he didn’t tell me much else.” She had a feeling she was probably going to have to try and get more information out of him later but for now she was curious about how much Derek knew. As Derek said there was a chance that Boyd had found peace, Erica knew that he was right and she felt her eyes sting with tears at the thought but she quickly blinked them away, turning her face away from Derek and looking out the window to try and give her a moment to pull herself together in the process. “I know there is but if there’s even a chance that he’s still stuck on the Other Side then I can’t give up until he’s back with us,” she explained, taking a shaky breath before continuing. “It’s my fault he’s gone, if I hadn’t decided to leave then he would have stayed as well and he would still be alive.” Boyd was her best friend, a part of her knew that perhaps he’d had feelings for her and it had been those feelings that had made him agree to go with her but she was still the reason why he had ended up attracting the attention of the Alpha Pack in the first place. “If you even think about it you’ll get it thrown straight back at you,” Erica warned playfully, knowing that there was absolutely no way that she would ever be caught dead wearing one of those hats. As Derek said that she didn’t need to thank him, Erica shook her head before turning to look at him as he brought the car to a stop. “Yes I do. You gave me a family that was so much better than the one I had at home,” she admitted. She had felt guilty about leaving her younger brother behind after she’d found her way back from the Other Side and she knew that she would always regret that but her parents had stopped being her parents pretty much the day they’d split up. Her family was broken beyond repair and she hadn’t wanted to be there so she had jumped at the chance to get away when Derek had offered it. Climbing out of the truck, Erica nodded as he spoke again. “Sounds good,” she admitted, thanking him as he held the door open for her before heading inside. “Table, definitely. Some guys in here can get a little handsy and I’m not in the mood to get kicked out for breaking a wrist or anything else,” she said as she led the way towards an empty table, grabbing a couple of menus from the stand as she did so and holding one out to Derek. “Do you know what you’re in the mood for?” she asked, her eyes glancing over the menu as she sat down opposite Derek, trying to decide whether she wanted to go for a burger like she’d thought initially or something else. Stiles’ mouth flapping had been one of the first sounds he’d heard when he’d come around in the tomb. In that single moment it might’ve been the sweetest sound he’d ever heard but Derek wasn’t about to repeat that out loud now. Give Stiles an inch and he didn’t just take a mile, he took the whole continent. He had done right at times, had found a lot of the few things they knew about the Dread Doctors, and maybe if he’d listened to him about Alix Stiles might’ve stopped him from being led astray for all those weeks. Dishonesty had kept more from him than Stiles’ inability to shut up ever had and there was still that knot of regret about it in the pit of his stomach.
Derek tried to shove it away with the faint huff of amusement he snorted out. Now Stiles was probably one of his biggest hopes in finding the people who’d done this. Then he could force them to take back whatever twisted things they’d done to him in their little lair, the last thing they’d do before he tore them apart. A muscle in Derek’s jaw tightened as he nodded, a shrug rising immediately afterwards. Some, not enough, or he would’ve done the tearing already. ”I know I’m not the only one they’d done this to, Scott’s right about that. It’s not just here … they’ve been doing this for years, maybe decades. I met someone who’d … who was tracking them. She was changed too but she’d never managed to find out more.” Despite all she’d done and what she was Alix had never gotten much further than he had. A blind alleyway for desperate people to stumble into.
Trying not to slip down another wrong turn, Derek forced himself to loosen up a grip that wanted to wrench the wheel clear off the steering column. There was nothing more he could dig up for now, nothing more he could do for his pack, or the people he’d turned. He swallowed hard as he caught Erica blinking her tears away. It wasn’t the news about Boyd she had wanted but sugar coating it wasn’t going to change the truth. Derek ducked his head slightly, let out a sound of agreement. Then we don’t stop trying. There are people in town who might be able to help … hey!” Stretching out a hand, Derek squeezed her arm. ”At least part of the blame’s on me. I wasn’t the Alpha I promised you all I would be.” He’d let it go to his head, slipping down the same path Derek had taken before Deucalion and his Alpha Pack had shown him the error of his ways. Thanks to them Boyd had died in his arms. That put the blame on his shoulders, an anvil’s weight that had come close to crushing him.
It felt rusty but the grin grew, cracking that foreboding shell for a few minutes at least. Sea glass eyes slid sideways to her. ”You can try,” he told her, a challenge to it. His throat felt tight for a moment. They’d immediately fallen back into that friendship that had been there before the cracks had started to appear in the pack and everything had changed. ”I should toss that thanks right back at you then. The family we had was more than I’d had in a long time.” No matter how many times he’d tried tossing it aside Scott had brought the family, the pack back around like a dog with a ball. He wasn’t letting him crawl away from it like a wounded animal this time, not without one hell of a fight.
They’d circle the wagons now, bringing Erica back into the fold while they carried on looking out at whatever was waiting for them in this town. As if she’d never left and he’d never come tumbling down from the pedestal he’d put himself on. One dark brow winged when they arrived at the Grill, his gaze going cool at Erica’s observation. ”They’d be kicking both of us,” Derek said darkly. It was easy not to be worried about being thrown out of somewhere when you could walk around the block and come back a different person. Shoulders stiff, Derek followed Erica to the table and dropped into a seat. ”Fries,” he admitted, mustering up a half grin. ”Maybe a steak. What about you? A burger? A sandwich? Their reuben’s pretty decent.” Washed down with a beer that did nothing more for him now than it had done when he’d been him. Derek still asked for one the minute the waitress appeared with that friendly ‘I know you’ grin now.

Stiles and Scott had filled her in on what was going on around Mystic Falls to an extent but Erica got the feeling that there was still so much that she had yet to learn. Either way she knew that she wasn’t going to run away this time, she had made that mistake once and she had ended up losing her life for it so she knew that she wasn’t going to make that same mistake again. She could have started over just about anywhere and she had certainly seen enough of the country during her travels but none of the places she had ended up in had felt like home. She had set out to find Derek and the others and she had slowly started to realise that no matter how long she had to keep searching for she would never feel like she was truly home until she found them and it turned out that she had been completely right about that. She had been a part of Derek’s pack back in Beacon Hills and she would be the first to admit that she had done some things she wasn’t proud of during that time both because she had been asked to and because she had wanted to. She knew she had some making up to do despite the protests the two boys had given but she knew that she was going to earn their forgiveness and their trust. They had welcomed her into the pack with open arms and she knew that she wasn’t going to give them any reason to regret that. “Those bastards,” she breathed as Derek said that the people responsible for doing this to him had been taking people from other places too and that they had been doing it for a while. “Don’t worry, you’ll be a wolf again before you know it. Scott won’t give up on you and neither will I,” Erica assured him. Derek might not be an Alpha anymore but he was so much more than that, he was her family and she knew that if there was anything that she could do to help him then she would do it without even having to think twice about it. She had learned a few things about the supernatural world since she had been brought back and she knew that she would have to reach out to the friends that had brought her back and see if they knew anything about those responsible for doing this to Derek and how to change him back as well. “Really?” Erica asked as Derek said that they wouldn’t stop trying and that there were people in town who might be able to help. As he said that at least part of the blame was on him, however, Erica shook her head. “You did the best you could for us under difficult circumstances. I don’t blame you for what happened and you shouldn’t either,” she said fiercely. Perhaps there was a time when she had blamed Derek for what had happened but the truth was that she hadn’t done for a long time. She knew that everything he had done was what he had thought was best for them and she knew that there was no way that she could hold that against him. “Bring it on,” Erica challenged although there was a grin fixed on her face as she said it. She was more than happy to do the cooking to make sure that they weren’t subjected to anymore of Derek’s awful cooking than she’d had in the past but she drew the line at wearing a white hat. It felt good to fall back into old habits like this, Erica had known that she had missed Derek and the others but she hadn’t realised just how much until she found them again. There was no way that she could have ever gone back to the life she’d had in Beacon Hills but now she was at least surrounded by family once more and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. “It was the same for me too. My dad didn’t have anything to do with me after he married the step monster and replaced me with the ugly sisters and my mom wasn’t a fit parent after they broke up. All I had was my baby brother so as crazy as it sounds what I had with you and the boys was a welcome escape,” she admitted. “Our family might have changed but we’re both still here and we’ve got the others as well now too so we can look out for each other.” Erica knew that there were bound to be times when she was probably going to want to kill Stiles and she really didn’t trust Katniss but she knew that she would get used to being around them again. As Derek said they would both get kicked out if anyone tried anything with her, Erica felt a smirk touch her lips. “Maybe but you’ve got the advantage of being able to make yourself look like anyone so you could return whenever you wanted to,” she teased. She knew that Derek didn’t want to be whatever he had been turned into but it was still pretty cool as far as she was concerned. Glancing over the menu as Derek listed a few things that were good there, Erica’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Since you’re buying maybe I should go for the most expensive thing on the menu and have a steak,” she teased although her eyes continued to drift over the menu anyway. “Just kidding. A burger and fries with a chocolate milkshake sounds pretty good right now,” she said, opting for something that was better priced instead. DEREK HALE

He’d lived with it long enough that he should’ve been used to the change by now. No more being a slave to the full moon, able to half turn – or at least look like he was – whenever he wanted, still fast, still strong. Seemingly all the best parts of what he was. Yet, it was miserable. Every change felt like he was putting on an ill-fitting suit, never feeling like it could become him. Even when he was himself it was like there was an itch between his shoulder blades and Derek knew he could only half blame that on the Dread Doctors. Things had been sliding long before they’d scooped him up and turned him into this. He'd seen the echoes in Alix, knew that the Dread Doctors seem to revel in twisting up those whose lives were already knotted tight.
A warning to Erica about watching her back died on his tongue. He knew she would. She’d been taken by things just as bad before, had died trying to get away from them. Derek nodded, those tense muscles loosening just long enough for the corners of his mouth to twitch before they settled back into that dour line. ”Your confidence’s appreciated,” he said tightly. His lower lip disappeared between his teeth again. All the confidence in the world would only make a difference when they actually turned him back. Right now all that promise seemed to lay in Scott’s hands.
There was promise with others, more at work here than he’d imagined when he’d heard Stiles shooting his mouth off in the woods and suddenly rescue had been right there. Derek turned his head just far enough for Erica to see his eyes and nodded. Allison had been brought back here. She hadn’t really been on the other side the way Boyd probably was, but it had worked. ”Really. Maybe there’s a chance. It’d be…” Like him getting to make up for what had happened back in Beacon Hills. ”You blame yourself a little too?” It was only half a question. They all tried to shoulder the blame for what had happened. ”It’s not easy to just shut the guilt off.” Jennifer – Julia - had known that and she’d played on it until she had him just where she wanted him.
The Derek who’d fallen for her tricks had picked himself up, was starting to brush himself down for Cora, for the pack, and now he was back on the ground. Hands planted, knees trembling, he was pushing his way up. Strong enough now to bare his teeth in a grin at Erica. Derek reached out a hand, slugged her lightly on the shoulder with his knuckles. His touch softened as he squeezed Erica’s arm again though. Her shitty situation at home was one of the reasons he’d offered her the bite in the first place. ”Family’s not always blood.” Some parents weren’t ever fit to have kids, and others that hadn’t been blessed in one way found a blessing in another. He just hadn’t seen it at the time. ”Is he OK? Your brother?” Derek nodded slowly at her, wondering how Isaac was gonna take to Erica being back, her death had hit him as hard as the rest of them. So many knocks taken, only so many times you could struggle back to the fight.
Derek hummed as she tossed the joke out about using his abilities to sneak back into the Grill. Maybe there was one use for them after all. He let out a rumbling hum, tilting his head to the left. ”Maybe something in the pro column finally. You wanna swap?” He couldn’t see her giving up what she’d become after his bite any more than he would’ve done, given the choice. The laugh that rolled out was ragged, the gaze that lifted from the menu narrowed. ”You think I ended up a millionaire along with everything else?” The truth was that the Hale pockets had been deeper than most in Beacon Hills ever would’ve expected. ”A burger it is then.” Derek looked up as the waitress approached, a smile of familiarity on her face. ”Hey, can we get a burger and fries, a cheeseburger and fries and two chocolate shakes. Thanks.” One dark brow winged at Erica as he looked back. ”The cheese is a necessity, you’re crazy for not spicing it up.” Talking about something normal felt good, if a little weird after months of nothing but picking over what had happened.

Erica had thought so many times about giving up her search and starting over somewhere new but the truth was that it had never felt right. She might not have made the best choices back in Beacon Hills before she’d died and she honestly had expected Scott, Stiles and the others to push her away but she had always known that Derek would be a different story. He had become family to her more than her own parents had been and she had known that she hadn’t wanted to give up the hope of seeing him again. Erica had grown up as an only child for years before her younger brother came along so she had never known what it was like to have someone try and look out for her the way Derek had done ever since he bit her and that was something that she had known that she hadn’t wanted to give up. “It’ll pay off, I promise,” she assured him. “Who knows, perhaps I could even end up being your good luck charm now that I’m here.” She knew that they had been trying to find a way to turn Derek back for a while but Erica knew that she wasn’t going to give up on him and she didn’t doubt that she would keep on at the others until they figured out a way to help him. Deep down Erica had known that she wouldn’t have to try and find a way to bring Boyd back alone but it was still a relief to hear Derek say it. “A chance at redemption for all of us and a chance to make our family a little more whole again,” Erica finished for him. She wasn’t sure that that was exactly what Derek had been thinking of but she couldn’t deny that the thought had been on her mind and she knew that she wanted to find a way to bring Boyd back more than anything. As Derek asked if she blamed herself too, a sigh escaped her lips. “You’re right, it’s not easy,” she agreed. “Of course I blame myself. I convinced him to leave with me, he wouldn’t have even been on the Alpha Pack’s radar if I hadn’t,” she said, hating the way her voice shook slightly as she spoke. She knew that Boyd had deserved so much better and she was determined to make sure that he got it this time around. Erica rolled her eyes playfully as Derek hit her shoulder. She had known that she’d missed being around him and the others but she had never realised just how much until now and she was glad that she had decided to keep searching until she found them. “I know it’s not, you showed me that,” Erica admitted as Derek said that family wasn’t always blood. He had bitten her because he had wanted another member for his pack and Erica had wanted a way to get rid of her seizures but in the end she had gotten so much more than that. For the first time in a long time she’d had a family, sure it was a dysfunctional one and very few people looking from the outside in would probably understand it but it had been so much better than she’d had back at home and she had cherished it. As Derek asked if her brother was ok, she nodded. “I think so. He was the one person I had to say goodbye to before I left but I’m pretty sure he thinks it was all a dream,” she shrugged. He was so young that no one would have believed him anyway so she wasn’t worried but she couldn’t deny that she missed him. “He’s the one person I wish I could have brought with me.” She had given up on her parents a long time ago, her mom had her new partner and her dad had the step-monster and evil step-siblings so she knew that they were both fine but Harley was different. He had relied on her to look out for him and she still thought about him all the time. As Derek asked if she wanted to swap being a werewolf for his shapeshifting abilities, Erica couldn’t help but laugh. “Sorry but not a chance,” she grinned. Becoming a werewolf had changed her life and even though she had spent half the time terrified that she was going to die and even longer stuck on the Other Side she knew that she wouldn’t give that up for anything. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you had a secret stash of money,” Erica admitted as she glanced across at Derek before watching as he placed their orders. “What can I say, I’ve never been a huge fan of cheese but perhaps next time I’ll give it a try,” she shrugged. “I hope the burgers here are as good as you said, otherwise I’ll be disappointed,” she teased. Derek let out a faint snort of amusement. Good luck charm, cheerleader, maybe one and the same. They sure as hell needed one with the continued avalanche of crap that came rolling down over their lives while they were still trying to dig their way free of the last lot that had swept them away. Scott tried for optimism when it came to all that trouble but when you had Stiles standing next to him as the voice of doom it inevitably all headed for pessimism. Maybe Erica would swing the scales back the way they needed it.
Even if she didn’t, it didn’t matter. You couldn’t look at people in terms of just how you could get what you needed from them. If he did that he was no different to Peter. Derek doubted that there was any redemption strong enough to make up for all he’d done … especially since Peter seemed to have disappeared again. Pale eyes crinkled faintly at the corners as Derek nodded. ”Right,”[.b] he said tightly. ”Let’s see if we can keep it together this time.” There was always a cloud of doubt over that. Time and time again it had been torn apart, sometimes by their own hands. His own hands. Derek tightened them on the wheel, his knuckles pressing white against his skin for a moment. After he’d been forced to kill Boyd the guilt had been almost enough to crush him. His decisions had led them to that point, Scott’s had pulled them all back from the brink after. ”It’s not on you,” he tried to reassure her hoarsely. Nneither one of you would’ve wanted to leave if I’d been doing things right.” Blame was a mine field and Derek knew that each of them had stumbled in and out of it time and time again. How his mom had managed it for so long was unimaginable.
Scott, Stiles, even Alix and Chris Argent, had shown him that there were ways to get back to your feet after those mines went off and you were floundering around, half broken. Derek tilted his head, one corner of his mouth tipping up. ”Scott showed me it first.” He’d been dragged out of that black cloud after it seemed as though he was the last Hale left by Scott and that grip had never wavered, not even when he’d tried to shake it off. Derek knew they would all do the same for Erica now, no matter how long she’d been gone for. He wasn’t sure he was gonna be able to say the same for her blood family. There’d been too much to deal with after he’d woken up here for him to look back at Beacon Hills, he was pretty sure Scott and the others hadn’t either. Derek shifted his weight, his brows furrowing slightly. ”You haven’t been back there? Weren’t tempted to bring him here with you?” Erica’s brother was underaged but a family kidnap wasn’t anywhere near the worst of the crimes that happened here in Mystic Falls. Would it even be noticed with all the bodies piling up here?
Like so much else, his transformation had gone under the radar for most – although, there was still a pit in his stomach for taking the face of a guy whose sister had thought him dead. Some part of him still wondered if Dani had ever managed to track her brother down. At some point soon that sort of tragedy wouldn’t be possible anymore, the only face looking back at him in a reflection would be his own. Clucking his tongue, Derek shook his head like he was disappointed. The truth was he wouldn’t wish the Dread Doctors’ curse on anybody. By the time he looked up at the waitress, that blithe smile was back in place. The Hales had always been secretive when it came to money, hoarding it in a way that hadn’t helped in the end. ”Cause brooding’s a rich man’s game?” he asked with a small smile as the waitress trailed away, their orders noted on her pad. ”You honestly don’t know what you’re missing. Are you doubting my palate now?” Had Cora kicked him under the bus about that? It wasn’t as though he’d spent much time in the kitchen growing up, other than dipping his hand in the cookie jar.

Erica knew that Derek blamed himself for what had happened but the truth was that even now knowing what she did about what would happen after she accepted the bite she would still make the same decision she had back then. Before she became a werewolf she was invisible to everyone around her other than when she was having a seizure. Her dad hadn’t had anything to do with her since he’d remarried and the step-monster had made it clear that she wasn’t welcome in their new family. Her mom had gone off the rails and her mom’s boyfriend had been a sleazebag who had wanted only one thing from her. Just the sight of him was enough to make Erica’s skin crawl but he had still thought that there was a chance she would go for him. Only her younger half brother had made things bearable and leaving him behind was the one regret she had from her old life but she knew that this was the way that it had to be. Everyone back in Beacon Hills knew that she’d died while in Mystic Falls she had the chance to start over and she knew that she wanted to take it. “We will. We’ve lost people before and it sucks so we’re not going to let that happen again,” Erica assured him, confidence in her voice as she spoke. For a while she was among the people who had been lost but she was back now and she knew that she wasn’t going anywhere again. Erica couldn’t ignore the way that Derek’s grip tightened on the wheel and as he said that what had happened wasn’t on her, she studied him carefully for a moment. “It isn’t on you either,” she said, her voice surprisingly gentle as she lifted her gaze to look at him properly. “You did the best you could in difficult circumstances. You didn’t know what you were dealing with anymore than we did, there’s no way we could have known what was going to happen with Jackson or the Argents. You did your best and we knew it,” she assured him before hitting his arm in a gesture that was much more her. “Stop beating yourself up over it. We can’t change the past but we can make sure that things are different this time around.”As Derek said that Scott had showed him that family wasn’t always about blood first, Erica’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Looks like he’s not such a bad Alpha after all.” Stiles and Scott had both filled her in about what had happened after she died so she knew that Scott was a True Alpha but that was going to take some getting used to. He had still welcomed her into his pack anyway and she knew that she was grateful to him for that. Thinking about her brother after everything that had happened was still painful for Erica and as Derek asked if she had been back there and whether she was tempted to bring him here with her, Erica let out a sigh. “I haven’t been back since I said goodbye to him after I came back,” she breathed. “I thought about it but he’s still so young and I knew I couldn’t take him with me while I was trying to find you guys. I’ve thought about going back to get him but it wouldn’t be fair on him to have me disappear every full moon. I couldn’t expect anyone else to look after him.” Erica had always tried to do right by her younger brother but as much as she wanted to have him there with her she knew that it would be selfish of her to take him from his home. “You’ve been kind enough to give me a place to live anyway, I couldn’t put you out even more by having you take my brother in too,” she shrugged. She knew that if something happened to her mom then it would be a different story because she refused to leave him with the asshole boyfriend but right now as far as she knew he was safe and she needed it to stay that way. “Exactly,” she nodded as Derek said that brooding was a rich man’s game. She really wouldn’t be surprised at all if Derek had some money squirreled away somewhere since he had never seemed short of it while they were in Mystic Falls despite the fact that he didn’t have a job but that was his business, not hers, so she knew better than to pry. As he asked if she was doubting his palate, Erica felt a smile touch his lips. “This coming from the guy who doesn’t mind eating burnt food? Definitely,” she teased. DEREK HALE

Loss didn’t seem a big enough word to describe the multitude of sins it covered. It wasn’t just about death. He’d lost his family to the flames, lost Laura to Peter’s murderous rage after, but he’d also lost Cora for years before she’d come back. He’d lost his new pack and with the help of the Dread Doctors, he’d lost himself for longer than he wanted to consider. It all carved away little parts of you, until you looked at yourself in the mirror and weren’t sure you recognised the face looking back at you. Sometimes, yours were the hands shoving people out of your life. Some part of him regretted having done that to Alix, the greater part of him absolutely regretted having done it with Boyd and Erica. Every one of those actions left him a little left himself.
At least Erica was back. Small blessings.
Derek huffed a breath out through his nose as Erica swore she wouldn’t let them lose people again. She sounded so sure of it, but he knew it wasn’t that simple. Some things, even when they were a consequence of your own actions, weren’t inescapable. He nodded though, made some small sound in response to her statement. They would fight it all, and he guessed that was all they were going to be able to do. What did slip past their intentions, they would blame themselves for.
Hearing Erica blame herself, Derek had felt something inside of him snap tight. His grip on the wheel had shifted in response to it, his jaw tightening to as Erica’s gentle words drew his gaze to her. ”I was the Alpha, it was on me to do better than that,” he reminded her. He’d failed, but it seemed like Erica wasn’t prepared to vilify him for that any more than Scott had in the end. Derek laughed, low and rusty, as Erica slugged him. He shrugged his shoulder, not bothering to pretend like it hurt. ”That’s what we’ve already been doing. At least the others have. You’re right, it’s time to stop beating myself up.” If Scott’s bite worked he’d have more solid bedrock to pull himself up on. A place to start fresh and maybe rebuild some of those bridges he’d burned.
There was a time he’d seen Scott as weak. His pack wouldn’t survive with a teenager in charge of it, but every step of the way Scott had proved him wrong. As his own had been devastated, Scott had drawn him into it and he’d passed on what he’d known to make sure that Scott didn’t end up making the same mistakes he had. Derek tilted his head, his grin slanting further. ”Most of the time. Stiles is still an irritant though.” An irritant who’d proved useful more than once, even when he’d bulled into a situation that had been nothing to do with him. The move from Beacon Hills to Mystic Falls hadn’t slowed him down, even if it had meant his dad taking a pay cut. Maybe for Erica it would be good too. ”You wouldn’t be on your own with him now,” Derek reminded her as she spoke of how she’d ultimately chosen to leave her brother behind. ”The pack isn’t going to argue over taking care of one of their own. You think I’m gonna tell you no either?” One dark brow rose at her. He’d turned her, had screwed up and she’d died for his family, there was no way on earth he was going to start acting like Erica was a burden or a drain on him now.
Lunch was gonna be the first step in convincing her that he could take a little of her leaning on him. Financially they were stable, emotionally he was getting there, Erica would see it in the end. Derek’s smile turned a little enigmatic as the waitress went to put in their order. ”It’s a good thing for me I’m not so broke that I’m begging on street corners then.” Erica’s little jab had him huffing out another of those laughs. ”When you’re desperate, you’ll eat just about anything going. I know good food when I’m not the one putting it together. And you know, since we’re roommates now? You can help out with the cooking, make sure I’m not gonna go poisoning anybody.” His stomach twisted a little at that. Whatever he was now, his system could still handle it, even if it all worked differently to how it had when he’d been a wolf.

Erica really wished that things could have worked out differently the first time around. She knew that Derek had done his best, he had taught them as much as he could and tried to prepare them for what was out there but she knew now that nothing could have prepared them for the Alpha Pack. She hadn’t truly appreciated what she was letting herself in for when she agreed to become a werewolf but she didn’t regret it because it had changed her life for the better. She didn’t have to worry about her epilepsy any longer and that was something that had defined her life for such a long time. Her family had literally fallen apart around her but becoming a werewolf had given her something else to focus on and she had needed that more than she had realised. Derek had given her a family and it might have been a dysfunctional one but it was one that she had loved nonetheless. “You did the best you could, we all knew that,” Erica assured him. “I don’t blame you so stop blaming yourself.” Derek hadn’t known how to be an Alpha anymore than she, Boyd and Isaac had known how to be werewolves so they had all done their best to try and figure it out together. “I’m glad you finally learned to listen to me,” she teased, glad that Derek finally seemed ready to start moving forward and put what had happened behind him. Erica knew that she wasn’t going to give up on Boyd, she was going to find a way to bring him back sooner or later but until then she knew that she needed to start living her life again after it had pretty much been on hold for so long. As Derek said that Stiles was still an irritant, Erica couldn’t help but laugh. “Of course he is, he wouldn’t be Stiles if he wasn’t,” she grinned. He always had a way of getting on her nerves at times but he had his uses and she knew that Scott counted on him so he wasn’t all bad. Hearing Derek say she wouldn’t be on her own with her brother now was enough to bring a small smile to her lips. “I appreciate that but I’m not sure I could do that to my mom. She was awful with me but she seemed to be trying to do better with Harley and to be honest he’s still so young so I’m not sure it would be fair to expose him to our world, let alone how I would tell him that I’m no longer dead,” Erica explained. It was a tricky situation to say the least but it was still good to know that Derek had her back if she did decide to take matters into her own hands and bring Harley to Mystic Falls. She knew that she didn’t want to mess up his life before it had even really begun so for now she knew that she just had to believe that he was better off where he was until she learned otherwise. For now Erica knew that she just wanted to focus on getting something to eat because the truth was that she really was starving. Erica had been scraping by for such a long time and in a way it was a relief to know that she didn’t have to worry about that any longer. She wasn’t used to leaning on people but Derek wanted to help her and she knew that she wasn’t going to take that for granted. “Definitely. Not all of us can be so loaded we don’t have to worry about working,” she teased. As Derek spoke again, Erica couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ve been there,” she admitted, knowing that there had been a few times over the last few years when she’d had no choice but to eat whatever she could afford. She had learned how to cook along the way but for a while she had struggled and she knew that she didn’t want to go back to that again. “Deal. I’ll make sure you don’t go killing anyone,” she grinned. DEREK HALE

Not blaming himself was easier said than done. Derek nodded mutely at her suggestion, knowing it was going to take time to talk himself around on it considering how far back his mistakes went. Maybe if they could get Boyd back, just like Erica had come back, it would mitigate the freshest damage at least. There was nothing he could do about his family, or about Kate Argent, little he could do about the older mistakes he’d made here in Mystic Falls – cause those were bridges he didn’t think he could unburn – but Boyd would be a start. Erica might argue it, but there were people here who might be able to help. They’d brought Allison back after that thing had brought back the hollowed out shell of who she’d once been. Maybe it was a path to another mistake, he wouldn’t know that until they tried though.
Derek hung his head, letting out a tight laugh before he shrugged again. ”I kinda learned my lesson on that.” Listening full stop. He had to do more of it, trusting other people instead of cutting them all off to try and do this his own way. That had been what had cost him almost everything once. He wasn’t about to tell Stiles that though. Erica would tease him about it, Stiles would be insufferable. The thought had a shudder running down his back. Stiles had been bad enough after they’d got him out of the cave. He’d been a captive audience then, now he had choices and that included keeping him at a distance unless he was needed. ”I’d prefer he’d be a different sort of Stiles … I’ve got no chance on that though, have I?” It would’ve burned his throat out to admit it, but the Stiles he was had gotten them out of more trouble than he ever should’ve had to.
Sheriff Stilinski – even Chris Argent, as much as that burned him to even think too – had been just as much help. If there was any legal reason behind Erica not being able to get her brother here, they could probably cut through that red tape for them. He knew what it was like to have a sibling out there that you were cut off from, knowing Cora was alive, but thousands of miles away had been hard, especially with Laura gone. Derek hummed lightly at Erica’s explanation, his brows furrowing faintly. ”He’s still in Beacon Hills, us leaving didn’t make our world there disappear. He might find that sort of trouble on his own … are they gonna be able to help him if he does?” That wasn’t him trying to cut her argument in two, just shining a light on a different part of it. He’d felt the shock at discovering that someone you thought was gone was alive again more than once, knew the way it could cut your legs out from under you. Even if you realised it was a gift later, in the moment it tore right through you and Erica had said he was still a kid. That made it all the tougher.
They had enough problems of their own for now, but in small ways, without much of a fight, Derek knew he could ease some of them. There hadn’t been much use for the Hale family finances before, but they still gave them breathing room. ”Some of us work in other ways,” he joked, but really, in comparison playing landlord to a building that was barely inhabited was a different world to having to graft for a living. He could take the pressure of rent off of Erica at least, leave the money she was earning in her pocket instead. ”You won’t be fussy about a couple of burned edges then,” he said, slanting a grin at her that didn’t last too much. Derek extended a hand as the waitress started back towards them with the drinks. ”Deal,” he told her. ”We can head over when we’re finished here if you want … get you settled in.” He nodded his thanks to the waitress as the drinks were set down on the table, lifting his for a sip.

Erica knew that she could have been angry with Derek for what had happened to her and she could have blamed him for it but the truth was that she didn’t. He had tried to look out for her and the boys in the best way he had known how and at the end of the day the decisions she’d made had been her own. She’d learned a lot about the supernatural world since finding her way back from the Other Side and she’d learned how to feel comfortable in her own skin rather than just knowing how to fake it. She had spent ages looking for the gang from Mystic Falls but if she was honest she couldn’t help but feel that she hadn’t been really ready to find them until recently. She’d had a lot to figure out about herself and what she had become and the time alone while she was searching for them had given her the chance to do just that. “You finally stopped being so stubborn, I’m impressed,” Erica smirked although there was no malice to her words whatsoever. Derek had a habit of thinking that he knew best a lot of the time and there were times when he did but she was glad that he was learning to listen to those around him. As he spoke again, she couldn’t help but laugh. “No chance at all,” she grinned. “It’s good to see he can still get under your skin though, here I was thinking that things might have changed while I was gone.”As Derek said that Harley was still in Beacon Hills and that he might still find the supernatural kind of trouble on his own, a sigh escaped her lips. “I’m trying really hard not to think about that right now,” she breathed. “He’s just a kid, he should be safe for a while,” she added although she knew that she was trying to convince herself more than she was trying to convince Derek. She wasn’t even sure if Harley had started kindergarten yet, he was still so young and he had so much to live for but then again so had she and she’d died anyway. The world was a cruel place and she knew that she just had to hope that her brother wouldn’t have to see the darker aspects of it. “Of course they won’t, I’m pretty sure they don’t know anything about the supernatural world and even if they did they could barely look after themselves while I was living with them,” she added. She knew that they wouldn’t be able to help Harley if he did end up getting involved in the supernatural world so she just had to hope that they would all stay out of it. “Mhmm, sure you do,” she said, rolling her eyes playfully as Derek said that some of them worked in other ways. “I really don’t know how you do it, I never thought I’d say this but I’d be bored stiff without having school to focus on.” There was a time when she had wanted nothing more than to get out of high school and as far away from the awful people there as she could get but over time she had learned to appreciate the stability that it gave her. “Nope, I’m sure I’ll have tasted worse,” she grinned. As Derek held out a hand to her, Erica reached forward and shook it. “I’d appreciate that, thank you,” she said sincerely as he said they could get her settled in once they’d finished at the Grill. Erica wasn’t used to leaning on people for help these days but the truth was that even though she hadn’t been staying at the motel for long she couldn’t wait to get out of there. “I was dreading the thought of spending another night there,” she admitted as she took a sip of her drink once the waitress had brought them over. It really was an awful place, or at least the room she had been given was anyway, and one of the sleazy guys that worked there liked making inappropriate comments whenever she walked by. Erica knew that she could eat the guy for breakfast but it still didn’t make her feel any less uneasy. DEREK HALE

Scott’s bite had taken him back to what he was, but Derek wasn’t sure he’d entirely gone back to who he was – and it was better for everybody involved that he hadn’t. The Derek who’d taken his uncle’s power rather than allowing Scott to try and cure himself should remain in the past, so should the Derek who hadn’t even tried to stop Erica and Boyd from leaving. Each failure had taught him something he needed to hold onto, little reminders of who he needed to be carved into the centre of him. He was still going to make mistakes, that was human – and despite what happened on a full moon, they were all still that – but he was determined to take each of those scars and learn from them.
Of course, that was just giving Erica the space to jab at him now. Derek’s laugh loosened, his head dipping as he gave what passed for a seated bow. ”It took some work,” he admitted. He still dug his heels in when it mattered though. Mulishness ran deep in his family, their tenacity keeping them on top of the heap in Beacon Hills until Kate Argent had decided to level the playing field. It wasn’t only him though. Scott, Cora, Erica herself, could claim it and Stiles … Derek let out a sigh and shook his head. ”Not that much,” he said dryly. ”Stiles is still a splinter and he’s added breaking and entering to his list of talents.” Stiles hadn’t been wrong though, Alix had been hiding something at that point and that secret had become just as much a thorn under his skin as Stiles had ever been.
Erica had her own thorns, buried deep in her heart when it came to her little brother. Derek planted his forearms on the edge of the table, studying Erica as she sighed. It had to have hurt walking away and leaving her brother there, especially when she knew what dangers could be lurking in Beacon Hills now. He hummed, not wanting to outwardly say she was wrong. Stiles and Scott hadn’t been much more than kids when Peter had tracked them down in the woods. ”Just know that the offer’s always there to go and get him out of there if you want him with you.” It would be the sort of backup he’d been bad at giving before. Instead of saving people once he’d become Alpha, he’d dragged them deep into trouble, starting with Erica herself. ”Then we do it if we have to,” Derek told Erica honestly, his chin dipping slightly so his eyes were firmly on hers. ”And I do mean we.” Erica had only been back a short time, but he was already counting her as pack.
Without the distraction of a 9-5 job, the pack had pretty much become everything in the last few months. It might’ve driven Erica – and some others – nuts, but it’d been all he’d known since the night the house and his family had been destroyed by the fire. Derek grinned, spreading his hands in the air. ”It’s a talent. You’ll find out that there’s plenty to keep you busy in this town if you start scraping the surface.” And even with making trying to track the Dread Doctors an almost full time job, he’d still failed to do it. Having Erica at the apartment would give him some sort of distraction from it. ”You’re doing me a favour,” Derek said honestly, shaking Erica’s hand before he reached for his own drink. ”It was that bad, huh? I didn’t end up trying its hospitality. I went from … camping out to Scott’s place to the apartment.” With a little torture and transformation woven all through it.

It was so easy to fall back into old habits with Derek now, in fact if she was honest Erica was pretty sure that things were better between them now than they had been before. Back then Derek had been so focused on training them and they had all been trying to impress him that it really hadn’t left much time for anything else. Now all of that pressure was gone and Erica couldn’t help but feel like a weight had been lifted. She missed Isaac and Boyd, that much was for sure, but she knew that she just had to believe that something else would go her way for once and that she would see them again. For now she knew that she should just be grateful that Derek was offering to help her out again and she really was. “I can imagine. It took you long enough,” she teased. She had a feeling that the stubbornness wasn’t completely gone but Derek did seem to be doing better right now at least and that was definitely a good sign. “He’s the token human, I guess he had to find another way to be useful,” she shrugged. Allison was human too but she was a hunter so she had that going for her at least. Stiles didn’t have that and he didn’t have Lydia’s banshee abilities either so she wasn’t that surprised that he had found something that he could do to contribute other than being annoying and awkward in the way that only Stiles could be. Even though she had never been a part of Scott’s pack back in Beacon Hills and she had often found herself working against them Stiles had still welcomed her back with open arms and he had promised that Scott would as well. They were much better people than Erica was but she couldn’t deny that the safety of a pack, the safety of family, was something that she had really been missing during the time that she had been on her own. She knew that she couldn’t go back to her own family in Beacon Hills, not that they were ever much of a family to her to begin with, but leaving Harley behind was one of the hardest things that she’d ever had to do. “I know, thanks,” she said sincerely. “He’d only be in elementary school now, I want him to stay a kid for as long as he can,” she admitted. Erica had had to grow up far too quickly thanks to her parents and her epilepsy and she knew that she didn’t want that for Harley. She wanted him to have all of the experiences she’d never had and she could only hope that he was doing that in Beacon Hills. “I know you do,” Erica said, a smile touching her lips as Derek insisted that he meant that they would do it together. “Why do I get the feeling that you’re probably already formulating a plan in that devious mind of yours?” Derek was more resourceful than most gave him credit for but Erica knew better than to make that mistake. As Derek spoke again, Erica rolled her eyes playfully. “Well, now I’m back I’m definitely going to help you find a new hobby or two. Or perhaps a job, you need something to stop you focusing on all of this all day,” she shrugged. She knew what obsessing about something could do and she didn’t want that for Derek. He needed a life outside of the Dread Doctors and he was going to do her best to make sure that he got that. As Derek said she was going him a favour, Erica couldn’t help but laugh. “I know, I’ll be making sure you get to eat food that is actually edible. I’m not going to be cleaning up after you though,” she warned even though she knew that Derek was more than capable of doing that himself. “Count yourself lucky. Trust me, camping out would have been better. The manager said there are some people who have been living there a while but the room he gave me was awful,” she shrugged as she took a sip of her drink. “I can’t imagine you staying with Scott though, how did that go?”DEREK HALE
