This was low.
Alix sat in her truck at the curb outside of the Coffee Bean. She’d trailed the doctor over from the hospital, guilt settling low in her stomach. He wasn’t somebody on Ralphy’s list, wasn’t someone she’d hunted down for bloody behavior all by herself, although she’d caught his scent in the parking lot and knew he was a shifter. Dr Leroux hadn’t done anything except be a friend to her cousin.
God, even after all this time it still sounded weird in her own head. She hadn’t even known she had an aunt until Brady had caught her name and put the pieces together. He’d heard Ralphy Quinn and had known almost instantly what had gone on. As he’d thrown her up against the side of the car revealing to her that he was an Alpha all she’d thought was that her family were finally laying in the bed they’d made. Only it had been far worse than that hadn’t it? Ralphy and her dad had killed their own sister because she was married to a werewolf. It had confirmed exactly what she’d always thought would happen to her if Ralphy went and spilt the beans. Her uncle knew it and while he was the only one with that knowledge in the family he was going to dangle it over her head. It was freaking ironic that the people in her family most accepting of her right now were the ones with the biggest reason to hate her.
Maybe if Brady realized she was hanging around his friends like a bad smell they still might.
Alix raked her teeth over her lip as she slipped lower in the front seat of the truck. She’d been barely visible anyway but now she got to watch Dr. Leroux head into the Coffee Bean without him having much of a chance at all to spot her. Patiently she waited five minutes for Julian to get his coffee and head to a table before she pushed open the door and slipped out. This was equal parts curiosity and trying to watch out for family who’d already suffered too much. At least that was what Alix told herself as she strolled into the shop. There wasn’t much nosiness about it at all.
Liar, she crooned in her head as she made her way to the counter. Perhaps she was just a little over this. It was far more curiosity and nosiness than she was admitting even to herself. ”A grandé Americano and … I’ll take one of those apple turnovers, thanks,” she said, beaming a smile at the barista. Three minutes later her cup and plate were waiting for her at the end of the counter. Alix picked them up, pretending to frown as she turned in a circle to study tables that she’d known would be almost jam packed solid at this time of day. She pretended to spot his, wincing faintly as she made her way towards his table. ”Excuse me.” Alix offered a wan smile, tilting her head towards the free chair. ”Do you mind? I didn’t realise that the lunch time rush around here meant that everybody and their sister was going to descend.” She chuckled lightly, glancing around them. It was planned of course, everything had been once she’d found out the connection between Brady and this guy.

Days off from the hospital were rare for Julian but he always made sure to make the most of them when he was managed to get one. He often ended up spending time with his family or hanging out with Brady or Em if they weren’t working that day either but for once Julian had some time to kill before he was able to do that and if he was honest he was at a bit of a loose end. He had always known that becoming a doctor wasn’t going to be easy and that there were going to be lots of long and stressful shifts coming his way but he honestly felt like he was doing what he was meant to be doing. A part of him had wanted to become a doctor so that he could make his family proud but more than anything he had wanted to do it so that he could help people and, if he was honest, a part of him had also wanted to prove to himself that he could do it. He had never been the kind of person who let anything hold him back and he hadn’t wanted the fact that he turned into a white tiger with every full moon stop him from doing what he wanted to do with his life. He knew that he was helping by working at the hospital and with every patient that he was able to treat and send on their way he felt a sense of accomplishment that he didn’t get doing anything else so he knew that he was doing the right thing. Since he had some time on his hands Julian had decided to head into town to pick up a few things. He had already been there for a while when he knew that it was time for a break and he headed to the coffee shop that he and his friends had often frequented when they were younger to get a drink and something to eat. It was busy but then again it always had been at this time of day so the truth was that he wasn’t at all surprised. He had lost count of the amount of times that he had ended up going there with Brady or Em when they were younger and they had often used it as their meeting place when they were going to go off doing different things. On more than a few occasions Julian was pretty sure that they had almost ended up getting barred from the place but times had changed and the three of them definitely had as well so he knew that it was all water under the bridge by now. Having ordered himself a coffee and a slice of cherry pie to keep him going, Julian made his way over to what seemed to be the last empty table in the place and sipped his drink as he checked the few messages that he’d had come through on his phone, albeit not from the people that he was waiting to hear from. He had only been there for a few minutes when someone asked if he minded. “Not at all. This place is always busy no matter what time you get here so you have to time it right to get a table,” he chuckled. “I’m Julian.”ALIX QUINN

Family were the one thing she should’ve been avoiding but the moment Brady had put the pieces together about them being related she hadn’t been able to let get of the idea. The day after she’d called him in to deal with her truck she’d gone out to find Liam. She hadn’t breathed a word about what connection she’d had to him but Alix had felt it in the pit of her stomach. Seeing Liam, hearing about his struggles at school, she’d only wanted to help. That was a ridiculous notion though. All her side of the family had ever done for them was take their parents from them. Alix had decided then and there that she wanted to help but honestly, when her mere presence seemed to turn Ralphy’s evil, Sauron like eye on those around her, it seemed like such a risk to allow herself close to her cousins.
There was no way to stay away though. Even when she’d been tailing Julian like he was a criminal she’d been telling herself this was a bad idea. Ralphy had already proved that he wouldn’t stop coming after his own family. Alix felt the itch between her shoulder blades as she’d trail after Julian into the coffee shop. If she was unlucky and someone on Ralphy’s payroll saw what she was up to here she could play it off as a random chat with a stranger. It wouldn’t hold up to much scrutiny but it was better than approaching the guy on the street in broad daylight and painting a target on his back.
Her stomach tied itself up in knots as she made her way into the shop and headed for the counter. At any moment she expected to hear some sort of angry cry behind her. Fingers pointing, pitchforks raised and torches burning to force the evil in their midst out of town. It didn’t come but Alix still had to force the pleasantries with the barista behind the counter. She held her shoulders back, her head high as she grabbed her order from the end of the counter and made her way towards the tables, only turning apologetic when she ‘realised’ that the only space left looked to be at Dr Leroux’s table.
Gratitude shone in her sheepish smile as she set her plate down on his table. ”Thanks,” she said with a sigh of relief. Alix let her bag slither down off of her shoulder to the floor, the cameras within making a slight clunk despite the padding of the case around them. ”It’s not my usual spot so that little tip kinda passed me by,” she admitted. Alix settled into the seat opposite, pressing her lips together as she reached for her cup of coffee. She set it down as he introduced himself, brushing her fingers off against the thigh of her jeans before she held it out to him. ”Alix.” Green eyes narrowed faintly as she waited to see if the name suddenly had him twitching. Brady had a support network in his friends, she knew, maybe a close enough one that she would’ve confided in his friend about what he’d learned. ”I’m usually more of a Grill or a Diner girl. They don’t mind when I tend to spread my stuff out everywhere. I think in here that’d probably get me thrown out.” She looked around, a smile on her lips. One of her careers would definitely get her thrown out, the other had always been a human enough pastime to avoid most scrutiny.

Julian had known that his life was going to be hectic from the moment that he realised that he wanted to become a doctor but it was something that he had been working hard for and he knew that he wasn’t going to let it get to him. Losing Brady, Emily and so many of his other friends had given him the motivation to follow his dreams because as far as he was concerned what had happened to all of them was proof that life was far too short to take for granted. It had been a tough road but he had managed to get there in the end and now that he had Brady and Emily back in his life he was doing his best to find a better balance. Working at the hospital definitely kept him busy but he was doing his best to make sure that he had time for his friends and family as well and he knew that he really couldn’t do anymore than that. It wasn’t always easy making sure that he had the night of the full moon off but so far he had always managed to make it work and he knew that he was going to continue trying to fly under the radar as much as he could. He knew what would happen if anyone learned what he was so that was a secret that he knew he needed to keep no matter what. Generations of his family had been living in Mystic Falls, the town was their home, and so far they had been doing a pretty good job of not drawing too much attention to themselves and he knew that it needed to stay that way. Dec and Amy had run into a little trouble with hunters over the last couple of years but things seemed better now and he knew that he didn’t want to do anything to jeopardise that. That day was one of those rare days off that seemed to be few and far between at the moment so he knew that he wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. He had headed into town to pick up a few things before deciding to stop and grab a cup of coffee something to eat and it seemed that he was lucky to find an empty table because the place seemed to fill up pretty quickly after that. He wasn’t at all surprised when someone asked to join him and he offered her a smile as she thanked him. He had hoped that one of his friends or siblings might have been free to catch up that day but they hadn’t ended up getting back to him so he knew that having some different company for a while wasn’t a bad thing. “It’s definitely worth remembering for next time,” Julian offered, a smile working its way across his face as he looked over at her. Reaching forward, he shook her outstretched hand and let it go before hesitating for a moment. “Are you the same Alix who let my brother Declan go and who happens to be Brady’s cousin?” he asked, the name ringing a bell from what they had both told him before. It seemed like it would be far too much of a coincidence if she wasn’t so he knew that he needed to keep his guard up. She had let his brother go though so a part of him wanted to believe that she was different to the rest of her family just like Brady was. “They won’t mind if you catch them at the right time but try it now and they definitely would,” he agreed. Don’t let them see who you really are. Her dad couldn’t have had a clue at the time but one of the Quinn family tenets was just as fitting for her now as it had been when she’d been a fifteen year old, chomping at the bit to get out there with her parents and her older brothers. It had been advice to keep them from suddenly ending up under the wrong sort of spotlight. You didn’t carry what you did ‘home’ with you, not that Alix ever would’ve called any of the motel rooms they tended towards home. Occasionally it was a house rental rather than the mid-level motels that her parents had thought put them a head and shoulders above most hunters, but still, it wasn’t theirs These days it was probably more fitting than ever. The only person she’d revealed the full, absolute truth to hadn’t been able to handle it. It still stung but Alix understood. Derek had enough on his hands without her bringing her hunter self into his life, especially not after her hunter self had almost blown his brains all over the sidewalk not a block from here. After that it had been back to meting out information. Just as much as anybody had to know, shielding herself behind the rest.
There was a sly edge to that truth now, hidden behind the faintly sheepish veneer she’d put up as she’d approached Dr. Leroux’s table. It had worked for her before, hell, it wasn’t that different to what she’d used on Derek, only that meeting had rapidly gone in a direction she hadn’t expected. Alix pushed her hair back from her face, tapping her finger lightly against her temple in a promise. ”I’ll make sure I remember,” she assured him. ”I’ll have to make sure I adjust my schedule for the next time I head out this way.” Not that she would in the same way again. Life in Mystic Falls had developed it’s own rhythm for her, one that didn’t allow for this sort of thing without a purpose.
The doc had been her purpose today, that thin connection between her cousins and the Dread Doctors. The thought of them was enough to put an ounce of dread in the pit of her stomach as she tried to push that thought aside. Alix resisted the urge to scrub her damp palm over the thigh of her jeans as well as her fingers. She wished she had as he shook her hand and dropped the shoe she should’ve been waiting for right in front of her. Alix stilled for a moment, full lips parting as she sucked in a breath too fast. She swallowed, feeling something inside of her twitch as she forced a wry smile. ”I honestly didn’t expect either one of them to talk,” she admitted hoarsely. ”I guess you manage to put the two Alix’s together and made it three with this.” Alix gestured back and forth between the two of them as she reached for her cup. ”By stuff, I didn’t mean the sort of thing the two of them might’ve told you about … that’s not the only thing I do. I’m a photographer.” Licking lips suddenly gone dry, Alix raised her cup, took a sip of coffee that was still hot. ”What did they both tell you?” Did she really want to know? Probably not but it was better than being blindsided again here.

Days off seemed to be pretty rare with Julian’s job working as a doctor at the local hospital, a lot of the time even when he wasn’t working he was on call in case there was an emergency so he wasn’t able to truly unwind too often but that day he wasn’t on call and he didn’t have to go into work at all so his day was completely his own and he knew that he wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. He had known how busy his job would keep him when he’d decided that he wanted to go to medical school when he finished college but it was completely different knowing it to actually living it and it had taken some getting used to at first to say the least. He knew now that he wouldn’t change it for anything in the world though, he had found a career that he loved and that he was passionate about and he knew that he wasn’t going to let anything steer him away from that path. He was good at what he did and the feeling of knowing that he had helped save a patient’s life was one that he knew he would never want to give up. Being a weretiger complicated things but thankfully he had managed to work his shifts around the full moon pretty well so far and he knew that he would continue to do so. He might not have asked to be one but it was in his blood and he had grown up knowing that sooner or later he would start to turn with each full moon just like his family had done for generations so he had found a way of balancing that and the rest of his life and it was working out pretty well so far. Julian would have liked to have been able to spend his day off with his family or friends and he knew that he would get to spend some time with them later but for now he had some free time on his hands. With that in mind he had spent some time in town running a few errands and picking up a few things that he’d needed before realising that a drink and something to eat was in order and that decision had meant that he’d ended up with some unexpected company which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. “You won’t regret it,” Julian assured her as he lifted his mug to his lips and took a sip of his drink. He hadn’t known that there was anything familiar about the woman who had joined him until she had given him her name and that matched with the description that he had been given meant that this couldn’t just be a coincidence, nor was it likely that she arrived at the exact time that all of the other tables were taken. “I’m Dec’s older brother and Brady’s best friend, I have ways of getting both of them to talk,” Julian shrugged. It hadn’t been easy in either case but he had managed to get both of them to open up and he had wondered if they had both met the same woman but now he knew for sure and he couldn’t deny that he was curious as to what she was doing in town and why she had decided to seek him out. “It wouldn’t take a genius to figure it out. Apart from when I was at college I’ve lived in Mystic Falls my whole life, new people rarely arrive undetected around here so two new women in town with the same name wasn’t likely,” he offered. He was wary about the fact that she had sought him out too but he knew that she wouldn’t try anything in public so he wasn’t worried right now. “I see,” he nodded as Alix said that she was a photographer. It was a bit of a strange sideline for a hunter but then again he supposed that they could do just about anything that they wanted to just like werecreatures like him could. Taking another sip of his drink, Julian studied her carefully for a moment as she asked what Dec and Brady had told him. “Brady told me you’ve been working with the guy he thinks killed his parents and that you know about the disappearances that have been going on around here while Dec told me that you were hunting him because his name is on some kind of supernatural hit list and there is a bounty on his head but you decided to let him go. Is that why you’re here – you felt guilty about going after him because he’s a kid so you thought you’d try me instead?” he asked, his eyes studying her carefully as he tried to gauge her reaction. The fact that both Brady and Declan had talked about her to someone they trusted implicitly shouldn’t have come as a surprise. Despite what happened to them some didn’t keep it all bottled up inside. They had a support network that they likely believed they could confide everything to. In the last seven years every attempt she’d made to do that had left her feeling like it had come back to bite her on her ass. The thought of how things had gone with Derek when she’d finally come entirely clean to him, tears burning their way down her cheeks, the alcohol she’d doctored so it would actually work like it should burning in her gut, left her stomach souring now. Alix drew in a breath, taking a sip of her coffee as she tried to flash Julian a faint smile. She’d been between a rock and a hard place, lying to everybody around her, for so long that she wasn’t sure how to do this anymore, not the right way anyway. The wrong way had cost people their lives, innocent people. That news had obviously started to get around, the scarlet letter on her brow only feeling like it was more and more visible. If the Docs weren’t here she would’ve run after what happened with Derek, even if they were maybe she should’ve done. Sticking around had just left the opportunity for this to happen. Someone had talked and soon enough she imagined that news would spread like wildfire and either she’d find someone waiting on her doorstep to kill her or the good folks of Mystic Falls would club together to force her out of town with pitchforks and torches burning. There was no way she’d end up behind bars, Alix knew that, even if the Sheriff was naïve enough to not know what was going on with the supernatural there were others in the wings always willing to play judge, jury and executioner.
The pleasant words that had kicked off their conversation didn’t last long. The minute she’d given Julian her name he’d put two and two together and had gotten four on the first try. Alix’s smile twisted further, her fingers knotting around the handle of her coffee cup. ”Brothers and best friends are like that, even when you’d rather they weren’t.” The good ones at least. Until Ralphy had arranged for her to be snatched Rohan had played both roles for her. She’d been able and willing to tell him anything. Things were different now though, what he wanted to hear the sort of thing that would cause a bloody civil war within her own family that would just catch her brothers in the middle. She tapped her nails lightly on the side of the cup, trying to keep up a hint of humour at least but it was hard to force it off of her tongue. ”It felt a little like every other person around here was new. If I’d realized they weren’t I would’ve gone by a dozen different names instead.” She’d been honest with both of them though and now she could feel savage teeth in her gut paying her back for it.
It felt ridiculous trying to prove she still had some humanity to Julian, that she wasn’t just a killer but photography had been her shield for so long. Swallowing hard, Alix shook her head and looked up at Julian with eyes that had hardened just a little as she fought to keep her shields up. ”Working with isn’t exactly accurate.” That made it sound like she wanted to be doing any of this. She didn’t. ”The man he thinks kills his parents is my uncle. Brady’s my cousin. I know less about that than I do what else is going on here. That I’m trying to stop. It was why I spoke to Brady in the first place.” This time his question had her laughing, her eyes meeting his across the table. ”You think I’d try something in the middle of a crowded coffee shop? Don’t worry, you’re safe, Julian, and so are Brady and Declan, from me at least.” There was no way she could guarantee that Ralphy wouldn’t come for either one of them eventually.

Julian had known how busy his life would end up being when he’d realised that he wanted to train to become a doctor but it was definitely proving to be worth it as far as he was concerned. He knew that he could have done pretty much anything with his life but he’d always wanted to help people and being a doctor definitely gave him the chance to do that. It was hard work and it meant that he didn’t tend to end up with too much free time on his hands but that was something that he was learning to juggle and he knew that it was never going to take away from the fact that he loved his job either. Since moving out he hadn’t been able to see as much of his family but he’d known that he needed his own space anyway so it was just one of those things. More often than not he tried to spend time with them during his free time when he could or he would end up spending time with one of his friends. It was still a little surreal that Brady was back living in Mystic Falls once more after he’d been away for so long but Julian knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. Brady and Emily had become family to him during their time in Mystic Falls and he had both of them back in his life now even if things were still a little weird with Emily so he knew that he wanted to make the most of it. Heading into town wasn’t the most exciting thing in the world that he could have done but there were a few things that he’d needed to do and stopping to get something to eat and drink had seemed like a good idea after a while so he knew that it was worth it. He hadn’t expected to end up with some company, least of all the hunter that could have killed his younger brother, but he wasn’t about to let himself be tricked into believing that she was someone else and thankfully she didn’t even bother to try. “I’d much rather they talk to me than bottle it up,” Julian shrugged. He knew that that was never a good idea so he would much prefer the two of them came clean about what was bothering them rather than keep it to themselves. “There are a lot of new people around here but I’m protective of the people I care about so I try and make a point of getting to know the ones that come into their lives,” he explained as he lifted his drink to his lips and took a sip. He wasn’t sure what to make of Alix just yet and he wasn’t sure what role she was going to have in all of their lives but at the end of the day she was a part of Brady’s family even if he hadn’t known it until recently so he knew that he needed to make sure that she wasn’t going to prove to be a threat to them all. “So I heard,” Julian nodded as Alix explained about her uncle. “Trust me when I say that Brady will get to the bottom of what happened, he always does. If your uncle was responsible then he won’t be a problem for long.” Julian didn’t approve of killing and he knew that he never would but the guy was potentially responsible not just for killing Brady’s parents but also for sending Alix to kill Dec in the first place along with countless other people so he knew that the man needed to be stopped. “I don’t think you’d be that foolish but out of here could be a different story,” he said before nodding as she said that he, Brady and Dec were safe from her. “I’m glad to hear it because I would do anything to protect them.”ALIX QUINN

He was sounding so much like Derek that she wanted to laugh. Alix let go of her cup to drag her hands back through her hair. Green eyes cut away from Julian’s grey ones to the window of the shop. From the moment things had started to come apart Derek had wanted her to crack, to spill the truth of what had happened. When she finally had there might’ve been some relief there but the overwhelming feeling was betrayal. She’d hidden fundamental things from him. It might’ve been for good reason, what Ralphy had almost made her to do to him was proof of that, but still, it was a stab in the back. Julian might’ve wanted the same from people he cared about and maybe he would be different. Maybe he’d take whatever it was they had to say without venom but there was no guarantee. Alix raked her teeth over her tongue. From now on she was either keeping her mouth shut entirely or she was only letting people know what they needed to hear. Forget all about the want.
Clearing her throat, Alix glanced back at him over the rim of her cup as she lifted it to sip at her coffee. One sip, then a bigger gulp to burn the ache right out of her throat. ”Even if it’s something that changes the way you see them?” she asked. She’d been around those who turned their backs on her for far too long, trust stretched thin over that part of her that suspected her family deserved everything that was going to come to them. Some of those that did care were still going to look at her with horror in their eyes when they realised just what Ralphy had been forcing her to do. Perhaps the only one who wouldn’t was Dante, he had his own scars, was fighting his own demons with every vampire he killed. Alix mustered up the faintest of smiles as she tapped her fingertips against her cup to the rhythm playing in her own head. ”And just what did you try and get to know about me?” She was playing coy and she knew it. Most of what was out there in the easier to find sources had been carefully pieced together. It was why she’d been able to stay hidden from her family for so long and from the things that had done this to her.
There was a chance that coming to clean to Brady would come back to bite her on the ass now, maybe him too. That ache in her throat intensified as she stared at Julian. Inching forward, Alix tightened her grip on the mug until her knuckles were pressing white against her skin. ”Maybe it would be safer if he didn’t,” she said hoarsely. ”Do you know what happened when I let myself get close to somebody here? Ralphy set me up, I almost put a bullet in his brain on the street. What do you think Ralphy will do when he realises Brady’s coming after him? Do you want a bullet in your head, would you want that for Liam or Mel?” Oh, Ralphy would likely to be all the more inventive then. Something he’d force Brady to watch. Just the thought soured her stomach enough that she shoved her coffee away from herself. A wry snort burst out of her as she leaned back in the seat, wrapping her arms around herself as she eyed him across the table. ”I’m not that foolish, in here or outside.” If she’d been ordered before it would’ve been a different story but it wasn’t a matter of the list now, it was a matter of family and by association Dec and Julian had just become that. ”I wanted to help when I first called Brady. I knew things that might’ve helped him get his sister and his pack back.” It hadn’t ended up at all like she’d aimed.

Julian had spent years hearing about hunters from his parents. They had taught him what to look out for and how to avoid drawing too much attention to himself and he had taken those lessons very seriously. He’d had friends who were supernatural while he was growing up who had ended up getting on the wrong side of hunters and he had seen it happen a few times since he had returned to Mystic Falls as well. He knew that Dec and Amy had taken those lessons seriously as well but they had still ended up having a run in with a hunter who was the kind of person who liked to shoot first and ask questions later and Julian knew that he would have lost both of them if it hadn’t been for Ben. That same hunter had been the one to put the hit out on Dec and he had found himself on the wrong side of a second hunter in a pretty short space of time. Julian had made himself a promise a long time ago that he was going to look out for all of his siblings and words couldn’t even begin to describe how glad he was that Dec had been able to get through to Alix. If he hadn’t then it would have devastated their whole family and Julian knew that he had to make sure that they weren’t in any more danger. Hearing about Alix from Brad as well had seemed like far too much of a coincidence and the fact that she had shown up in the lives of two of the people who were closest to him was enough to make Julian wary and he knew that he needed to see what she was like and what she wanted for himself. “Nothing would change the way I see them,” Julian assured her. He knew that Brady had killed before, his best friend had killed one of the men that had held him captive for years and in doing so had triggered his curse and he had killed again when his old alpha tried to kill the whole pack. Julian knew that he would always stand by the people he cared about no matter what but he wasn’t sure that Alix had people like that in her life and it was a shame to say the least. “More than anything I’ve been trying to figure out what you’re really doing here and what you being here means for the people I love,” he shrugged, knowing that there wasn’t any need for him to lie to her. He was still on the fence about her but she had saved Dec and she seemed to want to help Brady so if she was being honest with them then Julian knew that she wasn’t all bad. Taking a sip of his drink, Julian felt a smile form on his face as Alix said that maybe it would be safer for Brady if he didn’t go after their uncle. “Maybe but you clearly don’t know Brady very well. Once he sets his mind to something he won’t change it for anyone,” he chuckled. He had learned that the hard way and it wasn’t something that had changed. “I’m not worried about me but Brady wouldn’t let anything happen to Liam and Mel or anyone else. Your uncle might be good but I’ve known Brady for a long time and he’ll make sure your uncle doesn’t know what’s going on until it’s too late.” Julian knew that his best friend didn’t take any pleasure from killing but if their uncle really was that much of a threat then Julian wasn’t sure if there was any other way to stop him. As Alix said that she knew things that might have helped with Mel and the others, Julian’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “What do you know?” he asked, certain that any lead might help anyone else being taken like that again. There was something in Julian that reminded her of Rohan. Enough there that she felt her chest aching along with her throat. Even the burn of the coffee as she swallowed it hotter than she should’ve done doing nothing to ease it. Her brother had always had such certainty in him about her, so much belief and support. He hadn’t let her give in after she’d been hurt, had been the one getting up at the crack of dawn every day with her to change. Out of all of them he’d been the one she’d regretted leaving behind the most. Ralphy had to have known it too. It had been her dad he’d threatened her with most of the time – imagine what your pop would look like when he had to pull a weapon on his own daughter to put her down, like she was some sort of rabid animal – but on occasion he’d slip Rohan’s name in there. Who knew if one of her brothers would be made to do it to prove a point to them. Hey, maybe Rohan would even use that bow of his, that way he wouldn’t have to look her in the eye. Alix wanted to believe that her brother wouldn’t do it, that at the last minute the bond between them would have him dropping the bow but she couldn’t be sure.
She couldn’t look hi in the eye like she was Julian now and see that what he meant was the truth.
Alix made a low sound, her lips pinching tight for a moment to stop the faintly watery sound that wanted to emerge from them. Some cynical part of her wanted to tell him he might change his mind but instead she was nodding. ”I wouldn’t say nothing, because people can always end up way darker and more lost than you’d ever think, but … I can see you mean it.” Her fingers had been tapping lightly against the edge of the cup, her thoughts drifting as she looked down into the coffee but as Julian answered her question, she looked up at him. No smile this time, only that poker face back in place, the one she couldn’t entirely let down around anybody. ”You think there’s still a chance I’m going to hurt them?” Alix shook her head, pushing her cup away from herself for a moment. ”Truth is … I followed some people here who would do them harm, the same people who did me harm. Someone took advantage of me being here and is making sure they get full use of my skills.” If Brady really had told Julia everything they’d discussed then he’d likely know half of the story anyway. Brady seemed like the sort to share with the people he trusted.
Although, she didn’t really know him, did she?
Shifting on her seat, Alix hooked the heel of her booted foot on the rail of the chair she sat in, wrapped her arms around her upturned knee as she studied Julian over it. She couldn’t deny the fact that she didn’t really know Brady yet. They’d had one conversation that had changed her entire life, one he was super angry through most of, understandably. Alix’s mouth curled into a half smile, a touch of bitterness to it. ”That’s the Quinn in him. We’re bull headed, we don’t give in, even when everything else is screaming at us that we should. It’s dangerous.” Some part of her felt a little less tangled knowing that there was some connection to herself out there, some blood, that didn’t want her dead. The smile fell away and that seriousness was back. ”That makes two of us. I’ve known my uncle a long time, I’ve trained with him and I know it won’t be as easy as you or Brady hopes it would be.” Ralphy would be ready, had probably been waiting for this for months. Sighing, Alix reached for her cup again. ”About the things that took his people? Some. I’ve been tracking them a long time, I know that most people they take now survive. I did, others did. I’m sure your people have. I know they’re still here, but I haven’t been able to find where they have anybody. What do you know?” She winged a brow at him. They had to have a least a little something on the Docs too.

Julian had always been protective of the people he loved, it came from being an older brother and it hadn’t changed as he had grown up, if anything after learning the truth about the world he lived in he had become more protective than ever. He knew that it had perhaps ended up getting on the nerves of his sisters quite a bit while they were growing up but he was the only boy until Dec came along so he had seen it as his job to make sure that they all stayed safe. That protective instinct didn’t just apply to his family, it extended to his friends as well. He and Brady had grown up together and they had considered themselves to be brothers long before either of them had had one of their own. Brady had been through so much and even though he was the Alpha rather than Julian, the truth was that Julian still wanted to look out for his brother and that meant getting to the bottom of what was going on with Alix. “I do mean it. I don’t turn my back on the people I care about,” Julian nodded. He had never been the kind of person to do that and he knew that he never would be, once he cared about someone he would do whatever he had to in order to protect them. As Alix asked if he thought that there was still a chance that she might hurt the people he cared about, Julian’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment as he looked over at her. “Perhaps. You let my brother go but for all I know that could just be a ploy to get close to us. The jury’s still out on you at the moment,” he shrugged, knowing that he wasn’t going to make up his mind about Alix either way until he knew more about what she was doing in Mystic Falls. As she spoke again, Julian let out a sigh. “You know, I’m getting really tired of riddles. You followed the people who took half of our pack here, they did something to you and now someone is using you to kill innocent people like my brother for money just because there are people out there who don’t like anyone who’s different. I get it,” Julian said, not missing a beat as he lifted his drink to his lips and took a sip. Looking over at Alix, Julian found himself studying her carefully for a moment. “Actually I’d say that’s the Kinsella in him. You never met his dad,” he shrugged. The guy had been stubborn to a fault and he knew that that was where Brady got it although truth be told his mom had been stubborn as well so perhaps it was a bit of both. “Actually his mom was just as bad,” he added with a shrug. Liam had definitely inherited that same stubborn streak too, so had Mel at times. As Alix spoke again, Julian shook his head. “That’s where you have us both wrong, neither of us expects it to be easy at all,” he corrected, certain that Brady didn’t think that it would be either. “How much do you know about what he has been through?” he asked, not sure how much she knew about Brady or everything that he had endured and survived. As she said that the missing members of their pack were still here, Julian found himself nodding. “I hope you’re right, we can’t lose them,” he nodded. “Do you have any idea where they are? The kinds of places they like to hide out?” Anything that could give them a clue about where they all were, basically. “I know there have been people showing up in Mystic Falls with no memory of how they got here and when they do wake up they’re different. Some of them are just one species but there are others who are combinations of species that shouldn’t be able to mix. It doesn’t make sense,” he admitted. He had seen enough so called animal attacks to know that the number of people who were a mix of different species was on the rise, it was the only thing that made sense. He had friends in the police department and medical examiner’s office so he tried to keep up to date with what was going on but when it came to who was responsible for all of this the truth was that he had no idea. Every single member of Brady’s pack, hell, anybody at all involved with him, was probably already on Ralphy’s radar. Whatever hatred had festered in her family had spread further than she’d ever been able to imagine as a kid. It was a gleeful extermination plan, at least on her uncle’s part. Alix still wasn’t sure how far her father was involved in any of this, but Ralphy was like a kid fingerpainting with it, gleefully daubing all the pain he could over people – his own sister, the man she’d fallen for, his niece, probably Brady and his siblings too. None of them had escaped his machinations so far and it had left her feeling sick to think that somehow he’d twisted her brothers around in his twisted grip too. Maybe Rohan and Luther had escaped it, but who was to say when he’d crook a finger at them. A little reluctance to fall under the family’s sway when it came to hunting and it seemed as though you painted a target on your back.
Alix ‘s gaze ticked up from where her thumb nail scraped over the handle of the mug. Her lips were pressed together tight, the warning that wanted to come stoppered up behind them. It was a choice she understood, not that she’d had the luxury of keeping to it after the Dread Doctors had turned her. She hadn’t been able to stay with her brothers and watch their backs, she’d had to run away from them when they might’ve tried to watch hers. ”I don’t think I’m gonna convince you today that we’re not so different. When I care, I don’t turn my back either.” That meant she choked every time Ralphy yanked her chain to get her to do something else that went against everything she believed. ”I didn’t know who he was went I was sent after him, I had no clue that he had anything to do with Brady.” And after years of lies, Julian probably wouldn’t have had a clue what was truth or not rolling out of her mouth. Alix stiffened in her seat, her hands knotting together on the table as Julian’s patience began to stretch thin. ”If you get it then there’s no riddle anymore, is there?” she asked tightly. The story wasn’t going to change with another telling. He knew that her lead was in someone else’s hands but Julian couldn’t do anything more about it than she could herself.
Folding around herself more, her knee up, her arms closed around it, Alix looked right back at the man in front of her. The corners of her mouth twitched before her expression settled back into that flat mask. Her head tilted slightly, red waves skimming her shoulder. ”No, I didn’t get to meet his dad. My family made sure of that,” she said coolly. The lump in her throat grew, her heart aching in the cage of her chest. ”I would’ve liked to meet them both.” All the wishes in the world weren’t going to turn the clock back though. She shifted her weight in the seat, the muscles of her shoulders tightening enough that it felt like they would snap. ”Neither of you really knows my uncle, or my father…” she started, but Julian was turning it back around to Brady. ”Not as much as I probably should do. We … we didn’t exactly talk about that the last time. I read what I could … I know that’s not the half of it.” The newspaper articles were scant, as they always were.
There were always some hints and clues about the Dread Doctors but never enough to reveal who or where they were. She’d had to piece all that she knew together by herself. Her coffee was going cold, the swallow of it this time difficult. Alix stroked her finger over the side of the cup. ”If there’s one thing I know, it’s how they work. If you haven’t found them … yet … then they’re not likely to be dead.” Telling him was dangerous, especially if he charged after them, but trust wasn’t going to come if she didn’t open her mouth. ”Abandoned places – surprising, I know – warehouses, bunkers, places they can still hook in to power, but won’t be disturbed. I’ve looked in town, still haven’t worked out what rock they’d hiding under.” Alix didn’t let her eyes change colour, but she imagined that Brady had already outed her to his friend. ”That’s their favourite game. Stitching DNA together, coming up with new and wonderful things. If the pack do come back, you know they’re likely to be …” Just like that. No longer who they’d been, and no adjustment period was going to make that change any easier on them.

Growing up as the oldest boy in the family had made Julian naturally protective and that protectiveness extended to his friends as well. Brady had been his best friend ever since they were kids, practically family even, and even now so many years later Julian felt like he had failed him by not being there in Ecuador when he went missing. He knew that he wouldn’t have been able to stop his friends being taken even if he had been there but he still felt like he could have done more, like he should have done more, and he knew that he was never going to fail Brady like that again. He knew that it had taken a lot for his friend to move back to Mystic Falls but now that he was here Julian knew that he was going to do everything he could in order to keep his friend and the pack safe. Right now he wasn’t too sure what to make of Alix but he knew that he needed to be careful and make sure that Brady didn’t end up getting hurt by someone else he learned to trust. “Trust is something that needs to be earned but if you’re serious about helping then you’ll find a way to do that,” Julian nodded. He knew better than to blindly trust someone, especially someone who would have killed his brother if she hadn’t realised that he was still a kid, but he was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt at least. As Alix said she didn’t know that Dec had anything to do with Brady when she went after him, Julian’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Would it have made a difference if they didn’t know each other?” he asked, unable to deny that he was curious. “Brady spent a lot of time at our house while he was growing up and I spent time at his so he has known my brother since he was born. Dec joined Brady’s pack the same time I did, it just made sense,” he shrugged. He hadn’t planned on it happening originally but he wanted to support Brady and being a part of his pack was the best way of doing that. “No, there isn’t but it means you can stop talking in code and just be straight with me,” he shrugged as he set his drink down on the table in front of him. As Alix said that she’d never had the chance to meet Brady’s parents, Julian found himself nodding. “They were great people. Brady’s dad was always supportive of Brady and the twins while their mom taught them how to be tough,” he explained. It spoke volumes about their upbringings, he supposed now that he knew the truth. Brady’s mom was from a family of hunters so it made sense that she would want her children to be strong and able to look out for themselves but that didn’t mean that it had been easy for them. “We might not know them but they don’t know us either,” Julian shrugged before nodding as Alix said that she and Brady hadn’t talked about what Brady had been through. “Brady survived years in captivity and had to watch all of our friends be killed before he finally managed to escape. He dealt with being a werewolf on his own before a pack in New Orleans took him in and a while later he had to kill his old Alpha to save what’s left of his pack when the guy decided to wipe them out and take their power for himself. That’s how he became an Alpha himself. If your dad and uncle think he’ll be easy to take down then they’d better think again, he’s a survivor.” He wasn’t sure whether Alix had looked into Brady at all or not but it was important that she knew. “He did all of that alone but this time he has us.” They might not have been through what Brady had but Julian had been taught to fight by his parents and so had Dec. They weren’t going to let Brady face it on his own this time. Right now Brady’s uncles weren’t the only threat they had to worry about, there were the Dread Doctors too and they were no closer to figuring out who they were or where they were holed up. As Alix explained where they liked to hide, Julian’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “What about tunnels and old bunkers? There are a few of those underneath the surface,” he offered, knowing that since Alix had offered up some information then it was only fair that he did the same. “Some are right here under the town but there are others out in the woods. Some of the local wolves have been using them to chain themselves up in during the full moons if they don’t have anchors.” It was a long shot but it sounded like it could be a lead worth following at the very least. “They’ll be different,” Julian nodded. “It doesn’t matter, we won’t turn our backs on them.”ALIX QUINN

Both Julian and Brady had spoken to her like that trust only needed to be earned one way. Would she deny that her father and uncle were something she had to prove she wasn’t like? Maybe. Did Brady at the very have to prove to her that she wasn’t going to be seen as a monster in his eyes, something to be put down just like them. Absolutely. It was just as easy to picture him tearing her throat out as it was her own father’s finger on a trigger, eyes filled with hate. He could swear he was above that, but she’d seen others turn the moment she’d revealed another aspect of herself and she wasn’t about to go through that again. ”Oh I intend to,” she said hoarsely. Even if it was something she had to turn into the truth one act at a time.
She couldn’t blame the blood on her hands entirely on what her uncle had forced her to do anymore. It wasn’t Ralphy’s hands on the trigger or the hilt of the blade. What had happened with Dec, with Derek, had proved that she could resist. Their names were both still on the list, but perhaps with her watching out for them, any further attempts could be stopped and both were more careful now. Two innocent people thrown in with the guilty. Her mouth tightened at Julian’s question, her answer one that was painful as she nodded. ”Being straight with you…” Alix started after a moment. ”It would have made a difference, I can’t deny that. I can see now that not everybody on that list is guilty, but there’s only so much I can trust out of people’s mouths. You know as well as I do that not everybody out there’s good and most are capable of lying in a way that we can’t detect.” Not even when you could literally smell it. There were ways to fool people, to get past someone’s gut instinct too. Her family would probably have seen some non-existent lie in the way Julian spoke about her aunt and her husband now. She knew it wasn’t one though. Unlike her parents, her aunt had found something to love about a man who was something else. One corner of Alix’s mouth lifted, a deep breath pressing her chest into her thigh as she kept her knee up. ”She’d have learned that from her parents, although she took it a different way, obviously.” Just as she’d hoped to when she’d broken away, but Ralphy had given her no choice. He and her dad wouldn’t stop to see what her aunt had made of herself, or who her kids were, the what was enough to damn them all. Brady had fought free of that, saving his own life, going through something she could empathise with. ”I wish I could say all of that would be enough,” Alix said hoarsely as he finished explaining. ”None of us can know until it happens though.” And she was pretty sure they wouldn’t allow it to, choosing cowardice over facing an honest fight. If it did happen … could she watch her dad get what had deserved, maybe what her brothers did.
The ache spread through her chest then, the coffee not enough to wash the ache away. For now she didn’t know if any of them had been pulled into it, if they were innocent she couldn’t let them die, even if it cost her everything. If they were here, if they knew what had happened to her, she was sure they would be just as keen to wipe out the Dread Doctors. ”Those would work,” Alix told him, glad to change the subject. ”I’ve explored some of them, used some of them.” Back before she’d set up her place into the warehouse, the bolts buried so deep in the walls that there was little chance she could tear her way free once she’d changed. The way she had been turned made no difference to that, it wouldn’t with the others either, they’d have to learn to live with their new skin. ”They’ll need that. If you do go out looking, don’t go alone. I know you think you’re all capable of taking this on, but they’re not like my family, they’re something far worse. If you get any news will you let me know?” It was a big ask, one she wasn’t sure that Julian, or Brady for that matter, would be willing to agree to.
