This wouldn’t have even been a dream at the start of his freshman year of High School. Then it hadn’t even seemed like he’d complete a single year at the same high school, let alone remain at one long enough to attend his senior prom with his boyfriend. Riley had stood in front of the mirror in his bedroom, listening to his parents stage whispering in the living room outside. Maggie was never half as quiet as she thought she was and as she’d slipped into his room ten minutes ago to help him with his tie she’d already been hinting at how he should’ve had Danny pick him up here. All those photos to be snapped for the living room wall, for prosperity’s sake of course. Riley made a low sound in his throat at that, not trusting his mom after the first meeting his parents’ had with Danny. He supposed it had gone as well as it possibly could’ve done but still, it was better not to give Maggie the sort of opportunities she would jump all over with two wickedly sharp stiletto heels. Smiling gratefully instead, he’d sent his mom back out, promising she could get a photo or two before she left. It wasn’t thanks to either of his parents that he’d been able to stay put in town for more than eighteen months now, or that he’d finally settled into the sort of life he’d wanted all along. That was all down to the bite of an Alpha and the love of the most incredible guy he’d ever met.
Checking his watch Riley cursed under his breath. That guy was going to be waiting for him at his place to be picked up. Running his hand over his hair one last time he headed out of his bedroom and drew up short as his dad snapped a shot of him. Brows drawing together as his mom swept around to take his arm and pose with him, he almost felt as though he’d walked through that door and ended up in an alternate universe. ”We were going to wait until graduation but why hold off when you can use it for something special,” Maggie purred. She drew back, that vulpine smile on her face that always acted as a warning for anybody who knew her. ”Enjoy it tonight. We should be here when you get back but we’re waiting to hear on a call from Quebec. If it comes in and we head off at least you have your own wheels this time.” What? Riley’s mouth flopped open as his dad held up the keys. Not the truck’s keys, a glossy new set. His glossy new set. A gift. Before he could get a single word of gratitude out of his mouth, which felt like it would be a first where the two of them were concerned, his mother was pushing him towards the door, taking the keys from his dad to push into his lax fingers. ”Make sure you’d do everything I’d do,” she said wickedly, ”and more.”
That, he’d thought as he’d staggered towards the BMW, was never going to happen. He was the antithesis to Maggie Parker and for the most part now, absolutely proud of that. His parents would never be what he wanted to be, but at least in the last couple of months they’d proven that they weren’t entirely incapable of changing. They were still gone more than they were there but there had been brief, faintly gleaming moments. Riley let out a long breath as he got into the driving seat, marveling at the difference between the car and the truck even though he didn’t care about cars at all. By the time he was pulling up in front of Danny’s house there was a grin a mile wide on his face. Life now was a million miles away from where it had been and it was good despite the vicious bumps the road that had led him there had been filled with. It was smooth sailing now, this night continuing to glide along in a dream like way as he rang the bell and waited for the door to open. When it did his face lit up further, blue eyes twinkling at the dark ones meeting his. ”Hey,” he managed softly. ”Sorry if I’m a little late, my parents were hovering when I went to leave. I think my mom was hoping to catch sight of you all dressed up.” Maggie would’ve been almost insufferable if she’d seen Danny looking this good.

It was prom night and a year ago Danny never would have thought that he would be looking forward to it as much as he was. Back then his mind had been filled with worry over what Klaus was up to and that had resulted in his boyfriend getting his heart literally ripped out of his chest. While it was true that Scott had been attacked by some werewolves who had wanted to impress Klaus, for the most part things had been relatively quiet for all of them lately and that was something that Danny was grateful for. He couldn’t remember the last time that any of them had been able to enjoy a night out together without anything to do with the supernatural getting in the way but he hoped that for once things would continue going their way. He knew that if things had worked out differently then they wouldn’t have been able to do this, Riley would have remained stuck on the Other Side and Danny would have been left on his own. He loved Riley and the truth was that he really couldn’t imagine life without him. Riley was the first guy he had fallen for that was actually a good guy and wasn’t hell bent on lying to him so he knew that he wanted to make it work. Graduation was coming up too quickly for Danny’s liking but he knew that even then they would figure something out. Danny had been accepted into Whitmore and he knew that a lot of his friends were thinking about going there too so he just had to hope that it would all work out. For now he knew that he just wanted to enjoy their night together and that was the only thing on Danny’s mind as he got ready. He had thought about getting ready with Riley at his place but it had seemed better to do things right and leave it as a bit more of a surprise so considering that his house was closer to the school, Riley had offered to pick him up on the way. Getting dressed up was something that Danny only tended to do for music recitals but this was different. This time he had someone that he wanted to impress so he was going all out. His parents had gone shopping with him and had helped him pick out his suit and as he pulled on his jacket and straightened his tie he knew that they had made the right choice. Both of his parents were ready with cameras when he made his way down the stairs and the amount of photos they insisted on taking was incredible but in a way he was glad. He knew that it had been a shock to them when he had told them that he was gay but they had accepted him for it and he knew that they still loved him regardless so he knew that he could indulge them for a while. It wasn’t long before the door bell rang and he felt a smile touch his lips as he opened the door and took in the sight of his boyfriend standing before him. “It’s fine,” Danny assured Riley as he greeted him with a kiss. “We can always stop by your place later and let them take some photos, my parents want some as well,” he chuckled. “You look really handsome by the way.”RILEY PARKER

Was this what normal teenaged nerves were meant to be like? He’d felt the flutter of them walking into a new classroom before, approaching Danny on the beach in Hawaii, but anything that had resembled normal, and there’d already been pitifully little of that in his life, seemed to have evaporated with that bite in Oregon. It had taken a year of hard work here to make it seem as though he were getting it back. Fighting tooth and nail he’d tried to make it happen and standing on Danny’s doorstep, waiting for him to open the door so they could head to the prom he never thought he’d reach, Riley was pretty damn sure they’d made it. All of them. There might be something dark and ominous still on the horizon but for tonight it looked like it was going to be peaceful for the pack. Bit by bit they’d drift to the prom, with dates or alone, reveling in a ritual that most, including his own parents, had made their way through. The normal rituals, not ones involving thousand year old vampires determined to get their werewolf side back so they could become the biggest supernatural problem this town had ever seen. Riley lifted a hand to smooth his hair back, pushing the thought from his mind as the door swung open. Klaus was going to be the furthest thing from his mind now.
That flutter of normal sized non-mutant butterflies picked up in his stomach as he saw the smile work its way over Danny’s lips. Riley inched in, smoothing hand down the collar of Danny’s suit jacket as they kissed. Heat rose in his throat, burning away words again until Danny mentioned stopping by his place later to let his parents take photos. ”I’d say we’d make my mom’s year doing that.” He’d never expected her to take half as much interest in his boyfriend as she had after they’d sat down and had that conversation. There was still a bigger one to have but even that didn’t feel quite so daunting now as it had even three months ago. Something about this town had mellowed his mom in a way or maybe it had just changed that part of him that met every thought of his parents with dread. That heat rose from his throat to his cheeks at Danny’s compliment. ”Thank you,” he murmured, avoiding the temptation to start straightening his tie. ”You look absolutely incredible.” Drawing in a deep breath, Riley glanced over his shoulder. ”Do your parents want to grab some now before we head out?” he asked, just a hint of that anxiety in his voice.

Danny’s history at dances had always been a little hit or miss, when he and the others had been back in Beacon Hills he had ended up having to dance with Scott just so that he wouldn’t end up getting kicked out of the dance and while Danny had been happy to play along to cover for the boy, it wasn’t quite how he had imagined that his evening would end up going. He had had a relationship come to an end at a dance one year but this time things were different, this time they really had something to celebrate. Riley had died only to be brought back to life and not a day went by when Danny wasn’t thankful for that. His heart had broken when the other boy had died but almost as quickly as it had happened he had been brought back and ever since then Danny had been making sure that he made the most of their time together. None of them were invincible and considering that Riley and Allison had already lost their lives he knew that the same thing could happen to any of them so he knew better than to take anything for granted. Dressing up wasn’t something that Danny tended to do too often unless it was for a music recital but he didn’t mind it now and then and his parents had insisted on getting him something new to wear which had just added to the build up as far as he was concerned. More than anything he was looking forward to seeing Riley dressed up and as he opened the door he certainly wasn’t disappointed. “If that’s all it takes to get into her good books then we should do it,” Danny grinned. He knew that Riley’s relationship with his parents was often up and down and they didn’t always put their son first but he knew just how much the two of them meant to Riley and since his parents were going to get the chance to take some photos then he knew that it was only fair that Riley’s parents got to do the same. “Thanks,” Danny said, his smile widening at Riley’s compliment. While it was true that he didn’t he didn’t get to do this too often, when he did he liked to make an effort and it was certainly worth it given Riley’s reaction. “I don’t think they’ll ever forgive me if we sneak off without letting them take some photos,” Danny admitted, stealing a kiss before taking Riley’s hand in his. “Are you ready for this?”RILEY PARKER

The fairytale of boy meets boy on the beach one summer, falls head over heels and has a happy ever after of Disney proportions had never even occurred to him until he’d been forced to get onto the plane and leave Danny behind in Hawaii. By the time the plane was in the air the fairytale was slipping out of reach and waking up the morning after the bite? Forget about grabbing back hold of it, there was too much of a Grimm edge to it then. Faith would’ve assured him that there was a still a chance but until he’d arrived in Mystic Falls Riley knew that he hadn’t had any. Danny had given that back to him, Danny had stood by his side through everything that had happened here and after all of that it wasn’t just head over heels, it was something so much deeper. That connection had pushed him to try and patch things up with his parents, to work towards compromises from his side too. It had made more certain than ever that he wanted to go to his senior prom. He and Danny had always been honest with one another and he’d heard about his boyfriend’s past school dance experiences. If he could change that pattern then he’d do everything to make sure it happened. One incredible night was right there for the grabbing and it could include a concession to his parents too..
Riley grinned ruefully, trying not to grimace too hard at the thought of how his mom would really react to the two of them. She was trying, he had to take that as a good sign and just take the possible down side to it along with the far bigger up. ”You’re still sure you want to be in those?” he asked, amusement in his voice. ”I’m kidding. I just still can’t believe she handled all of this as well as she did.” That dread had left him keeping silent on his relationship for far too long in fear of how over the top his parents would be about it. Just seeing the way Danny’s parents were with him in comparison had been eye opening but at the same time Riley knew that he’d seen just how it might be with his own parents if maybe he gave them a chance. At the very least, standing next to his incredible looking boyfriend wouldn’t be any sort of a hardship. Heat blossomed in his cheeks faintly as he glanced deeper into Danny’s house. ”We better not let them down then. I wouldn’t want you disappointing them on my account.” He felt his heart in his throat at their kiss, squeezing Danny’s hand as he took it. ”Absolutely,” he promised as he stepped into Danny’s house with him. A faintly bashful smile rose as he greeted Danny’s parents, a hand going up to brush his hair down for the photos.

Given everything that they had all been through over the last couple of years, Danny knew that it was incredible that they had all even made it this far. He could have graduated and headed to college at the end of his junior year but the truth was that he wouldn’t have felt right doing so. He had wanted to get the whole high school experience and that meant being able to go to prom and graduate with all of his friends. Graduating a year early would have stopped him from being able to do either of those things and it also would have stopped him from being able to spend so much time with Riley. He knew that they would have found a way to make it work but he hadn’t wanted to put that strain on their relationship and the truth was that he hadn’t felt right graduating without the people that he cared about right there at his side either so he knew that he had done the right thing by deciding to stick around for another year. Mystic Falls was a dangerous place, that was for sure, but then again so was Beacon Hills. There had been a high supernatural presence in his hometown as well and even though Danny’s parents had been content to ignore what was going on around them and turn their backs on their druid heritage he hadn’t wanted to do the same. Instead he wanted to embrace it and he had been doing his best to do just that ever since arriving in Mystic Falls. Now he and Riley were going to be attending their senior prom together and Danny had been looking forward to it for a while. “I’m sure. I don’t think she would forgive either of us if we didn’t let her take a few photos,” Danny admitted. His house was closer to the school than Riley’s was so it had made sense for Riley to pick him up on the way but even so Danny knew that he didn’t want his boyfriend’s parents to miss out on photos of the two of them only to end up regretting it later. In all honesty it had been a relief when Riley had told his parents about the two of them as it had meant that they hadn’t needed to worry about hiding or anything like that and his parents had been pretty accepting of the two of them and Danny had a feeling that that was because they made each other happy. “You don’t need to be nervous, my parents love you and you look incredible,” Danny assured him, giving Riley a moment before leading the way into the house. It didn’t take long for his parents to start taking photos of the two of them, some of them together, some on their own and some with his parents involved as well. Danny knew that he really couldn’t blame them for wanting to make the most of the moment considering that he was an only child but it was still a relief when they were finally able to escape and head to the school. “Are you ready for this?” he asked as they made their way down the front path, making sure to wave to his parents who were stood at the door before they reached Riley’s new car. If things had been different from the start he might’ve been attending prom hundreds of miles away from here. It had been a dream for a time, to stay in New York at the end of one of those summers, his parents finally admitting that perhaps it would be best for them all if he stayed with his grandparents in the city. There would’ve been years of high school with Terra, proms that he absolutely would’ve dragged her to as his date if things had never progressed that way with any of the guys from the neighbourhood. Looking at it from a distance it wouldn’t have been a bad way of his life changing but it wouldn’t have been the best way. That way had taken some pain, a hell of a lot of it physical, but heartache too. Riley knew he wouldn’t have swapped it for anything though. It might’ve taken years to finally be able to see things from the other side of that funhouse mirror but he’d made it and he’d made it with Danny at his side. For tonight at least the two of them got to pretend that the whole crazy supernatural world that overwhelmed the town at times didn’t expect. He wasn’t a werewolf dating a druid, they were two guys in love about to pose for faintly cringy prom photos and for that handful of minutes here Riley knew he’d feel a part of Danny’s family. It was all too easy to picture thanksgiving dinner here, Christmases, all those little celebrations that his own parents had never paused for. Milestones he’d never hit before.
Maybe milestones for his parents too. This was going to be the first and Riley let out a resigned chuckle as he held up a hand in surrender. Considering how well his mom had taken the fact that he was in a relationship here, he wasn’t about to go tossing any roadblocks in their path. ”She wouldn’t,” he admitted with a grin. ”There’d be a lot of really unattractive pouting, maybe some tears…” For all of the two minutes his mom thought she’d get attention for it and then her attention span would have her drifting away to some other drama. It was easier to just do as she’d asked on this occasion, to trust that for once his parents would just be normal, loving people. The nerves would return later, when they pulled back up to the house and his mom would come rushing out on the porch squealing about how precious they were but for now Danny had them melting all away. There was a genuine grin on his face as they posed for the photos, remaining there as the two of them escaped and headed back towards the car. Riley waved back at Danny’s parents, slowing as he reached the passenger side of the car. ”Ready to get out on the dance floor with my incredibly hot date for the night?” he asked, tugging him closer. ”Absolutely. I can't wait for you to meet Terra too, she's going to love you.” He leaned in, hoping that he wasn’t about to scandalize Danny’s totally accepting parents as he ducked his head to kiss his boyfriend.

The moment Danny had realised that Riley was missing he had known that something bad was going to happen. He hadn’t been able to explain why but it was a feeling that he had been unable to shake and as the days went on and there was no sign of him he had felt even more certain than ever that Riley was going to end up getting hurt. He had never thought that he would end up being used in Klaus’ ritual to free his werewolf side and after seeing his boyfriend’s heart literally ripped right out of his chest all thoughts of their future had faded away pretty quickly. Danny had felt like his own heart had been ripped out too but even though the pain was still there when he thought back about that day so was the overwhelming sense of relief that he had felt when Riley had been brought back to him. He still had no idea how he was ever going to be able to thank Henrik and Lukas enough for that but he knew that he and Riley owed it to themselves to make the most of every opportunity that they had from now on and that included going to their high school prom. It was a milestone in itself and something that Danny had known that he wouldn’t miss even if things had been different and he’d ended up attending alone if he and Riley hadn’t been brought back together when he and his friends moved to Mystic Falls to try and save Allison but now things were so much better than he ever could have hoped for and he knew that he wanted it to stay that way for as long as possible. Taking some photos for Danny’s parents seemed like an easy enough way to keep them happy and he knew that it wouldn’t be fair if they didn’t do the same for Riley’s parents. If they went there before going to the prom then they would never get there but he didn’t doubt that they would end up there after so that the two of them could share in their night as well. “We can’t have that now, can we?” he chuckled, knowing that he wouldn’t forgive himself for upsetting Riley’s mom. He knew that the two of them didn’t always see eye to eye but it was clear to him just how much Riley loved his parents and Danny knew that he would do whatever he could in order to make sure that they liked him. “I hope so, I’ve been waiting long enough to meet her,” Danny grinned as they made their way outside before kissing Riley back gently. It didn’t matter to him that his parents were watching, they had accepted who he was a long time ago and unlike some who might say that and secretly hate it below the surface his parents had made it clear to him that they just wanted him to be happy and the smiles on their faces as he pulled back and looked up at them was proof enough of that. “See you later,” he called, waving to the two of them before climbing into the car. “You weren’t shy of doing that in front of my parents, I like it,” he admitted as he looked over at Riley before stealing another kiss. Fear hadn’t been something he’d associated with his relationship with his parents, not until he and Danny had reached the point here where things were serious, when they weren’t about to end in a heartbeat because his dad had decided that the little taste he’d had of normal life in Mystic Falls were more than enough. In other parts of his life it had been a near constant companion for a while but with his parents it had always been hurt and anger. Emotions that could run through him like a wild fire. His mom usually set that tinder ablaze, never intentionally, but with some devastating results all the same. It had taken work to stop his heart from being tinder dry and most of that had been done with Danny by his side. Subjecting his boyfriend to it now, taking his hand and drawing him in front of his mom in a way that wouldn’t just leave their relationship theoretical, it had an icy little finger sliding down his spine. There was some trust there at home these days, enough that he hadn’t bristled at his mom’s behavior as he’d gone out the door that night but Riley knew that some part of him was always going to worry about just how his parents were going to react to everything he was these days. Being gay was far easier to comprehend than being a werewolf but trusting her with any of it was a risk.
For Danny, for the sake of an amazing night to see off his time at High School it was all a risk worth taking. And at the very least they’d be putting that risk at the end of the night, leaving them to enjoy the prom first. Riley pasted on a serious expression as he shook his head, pretending to lament the fact that they might have his mom’s spiny exterior cracking and tears leaking out. ”Never,” he promised solemnly. It was just going to be a few minutes before he and Danny escaped to his bedroom or back out of the house, it was going to be tolerable, even if there was a chance his cheeks would be burning hot the whole way through the process. Riley grinned ruefully at his boyfriend as they moved closer together by the car. ”I wish it would’ve happened before,” he said honestly, knowing his cheeks would likely burn the whole time Danny and Terra were talking it. ”She’s been ducking me for weeks, it’s been worrying me.” If she wasn’t there tonight then he didn’t care who was in her living room, he was getting to talk to her the next time he ended up on her doorstep. Pushing the worry from his mind he tugged Danny closer, losing himself in a kiss for a moment. Pulling back, he waved to them almost bashfully, glad for the dark outside to hide the colour in his cheeks. ”I figured they already know how we feel about one another and they wouldn’t squeal about it the way my mom will,” he admitted, slipping easily into the kiss. His hand fumbled out, catching the door handle to tug it open for Danny to slip inside. ”Hopefully you like your chariot for the night too,” he murmured, stepping back to let Danny get in before he headed around to the driver’s seat. It was an amazing car, he admitted to himself as he started up the engine and pulled out in the direction of the school.

It was strange to think that their time at High School was nearly over. For Danny it could have all ended a year ago, he could have graduated at the end of his junior year with more than enough credits under his belt to get into any school that he wanted but instead he had decided to stick around and graduate with all of his friends. He was looking forward to seeing what college was like but he knew that it would be so much better having his friends and Riley by his side for it. He had already had offers for different schools, ones that he had applied for in order to please his parents, but the truth was that he had already made up his mind that he was going to go to Whitmore with the others. He knew that Riley would have found a way to follow him wherever he had decided that he wanted to go but Danny knew that he couldn’t ask him to do that. They were both happy in Mystic Falls and they had so much going for them, so many people around that cared about them, and leaving them behind really wasn’t an option as far as he was concerned. He hadn’t been that close to Scott and the others before they’d left Beacon Hills, Jackson had been the only person that he had truly been able to count on, but after he left Danny had found himself trying to reach out more and more and after learning what had happened to Allison he knew that he had made the right decision to follow them all to Mystic Falls. That decision had brought him back to Riley and now they were heading to the school to spend their senior prom together and that was something that he had been looking forward to for a while. Danny knew just how excited his parents were about the fact that he was going to the prom and that he was going with Riley, he had felt nervous about coming out to them at first but they had accepted him for who he was and they had supported him through everything even if they hadn’t necessarily agreed with some of the decisions that he had made. They had turned their backs on their druid heritage but they hadn’t stood in his way when he had decided that he wanted to embrace it, in fact that had encouraged him to do what he thought was right. He still got the feeling that there was something that they weren’t telling him but he was certain that he would find out what that was sooner or later so he wasn’t too worried about it. Instead he wanted to enjoy their evening together and he hoped that Riley did too. “From what you’ve told me she doesn’t sound like the kind of person who would do that without a good reason. Try and give her the benefit of the doubt,” Danny said gently even though he knew that it wasn’t easy for his boyfriend at all. He knew just how much Riley had been struggling without Terra and he hoped that the two of them would be able to make things right that evening. “They might not squeal about it like your mom but they are happy for us,” he chuckled before thanking Riley as he opened the door. “I like it already,” he admitted as he climbed into the car and fastened his seatbelt. “Looks like your parents came through for you after all.”RILEY PARKER

Sitting on that beach in Hawaii Riley had had no idea what lay out there in the world. Danny had known at that point, had been fully aware of the werewolves in Beacon Hills and the fact that most nightmarish things were based in truth. He hadn’t spilled it all out on those nights they’d spent out on the sand though. Even if he had done there was nothing that could’ve prevented what had happened in Bear Creek. The Alpha had been the only one who could’ve changed what had happened by not attacking in the first place. He’d hated it so much at first, feeling like the life he’d spent years pushing for was now way beyond reach but slowly Riley had found the blessings in what had happened to him. It had pushed his parents into allowing him to do the one thing he’d always wanted to – settle down somewhere, it had given him an added inner strength and belief in himself he’d been lacking before, it had given him a pack, a family, and in all of those choices that had led him to right here he’d found himself with the two people who’d meant most back in his life. Turning furry once a month had once seemed like a massive cost but now it was a small price to pay for this. He had the life he always wanted, another family, his best friend here, albeit with one huge skeleton in the closet that she wouldn’t reveal to him, and, for the first time ever, he was getting to enjoy prom with someone he cared about.
It had seemed to excite his mom just as much. His dad had hovered in the background, smiling as the car keys were handed over but with his dad Riley always felt that his head was in his next book, buried in the flow of words. His mom was the one person who could pull him out of that. He’d never understood it himself, not until he and Danny had gotten that close. It was like a riptide, tumbling you around, holding you in an iron grip until you were happy to let yourself drown in it. Riley knew he’d let himself do that in a lot of ways of late and it hadn’t always worked out for the best. After pointing the finger right back at him about not reaching out to her after they’d last been in New York he had realized had much he’d failed Terrra. He’d tried to make up for it always but then she was the one ducking him, practically hiding out, getting wrapped up in the guy he’d seen her kissing through the window. Riley’s rueful grin faded slightly at the thought, a line carving itself between his brows as he shook his head. ”It’s not her and that’s why I’m worrying. We both screwed up a little with our friendship but even if she’s trying to hide what’s going on from me she shouldn’t be doing this.” He bobbed his head as Danny told him to give her the benefit of the doubt. Honestly, he’d tried to, but the worry burning in the pit of his stomach might not give him the choice. It died back now, extinguished by their kiss, the worry replaced by a grin as he held the door open for Danny. ”I’m glad,” he admitted. ”It would’ve been really awkward if they didn’t like me.” Danny would have no worry about that from his mom. Riley slipped into the driver’s seat, running a hand over the wheel proudly. ”She did, she kinda blindsided me with it. I’m gonna have to really thank her for it later, huh?” That would be after the prom though. Reaching over, giving his boyfriend’s hand a squeeze, Riley eased the car through the streets to the school.

Danny had been through one failed relationship after another before Riley came along and he had started to think that his luck was never going to change. Granted things with Ethan were different, the two of them had ended things because Ethan had felt like he had needed to leave Mystic Falls after losing his twin and Danny had known that he couldn’t be the one to make him stay but aside from that he had always been attracted to guys who were completely wrong for him. As it happened both Ethan and Riley were werewolves so Danny had a feeling that he perhaps had a type now but the truth was that he had liked both of them before he had found out what they were in Ethan’s case and before they had become a werewolf in Riley’s. Things finally seemed to be going well now and even the fact that Riley had been used as a sacrifice in Klaus’ ritual hadn’t been enough to ruin things between them. Henrik had brought Riley back and since then Danny couldn’t help but feel like the two of them had been going from strength to strength. He wasn’t ashamed to admit that he had fallen head over heels for Riley and even with graduation fast approaching he knew that they would figure something out. They had faced never seeing each other again when they parted ways in Hawaii but fate had brought them back together and what was going to happen next was something that they were going to be able to control so he knew that it would work out. For now Danny just wanted to enjoy being able to spend the evening together and with their friends as well. Things were complicated for Riley with Terra right now but Danny refused to let Riley give up on her. “She probably thinks that she’s doing it for the right reason. Try reaching out to her tonight and see if the two of you can clear the air. I’m sure it will make you both feel a lot better,” he suggested. He knew just how much this was getting to Riley and the last thing he wanted was for the two of them to get to the point where they just couldn’t repair their friendship so if that meant that Danny had to give him a gentle push in the right direction then he knew that he would do so without even thinking twice about it. As Riley spoke again, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “You make me happy, of course they like you,” he chuckled. His exes they had been much more reserved about but they could see that Riley was good for him so with him it was a completely different story. “I think that’s an understatement,” he nodded as Riley asked if he was really going to have to thank his mom for the car later. It didn’t take them long to reach the school and as the car came to a stop, Danny unbuckled his seatbelt and leaned over to press a kiss to his boyfriend’s lips. “Are you ready for this?”RILEY PARKER

Up until he’d spotted Danny on that beach there’d only been a handful of people who’d remained in his life for more than just a couple of months – his parents, although there were times when he’d wondered if his mom actually was a part of it, his dad, his grandparents and Terra. That was it. No spreading tree of friends and family, no hundreds of connections on Facebook or Instagram. Just enough people that he could count on both of hands and the majority were only there because they were blood. Terra was the one person who’d been there out of choice and now it felt like her choice was to draw away from him instead of slipping back to once they’d once been instead. A few years ago she’d have been the first one he called about the car and she’d have been the first to tell him that maybe it was time to give his mom a chance here. Having Danny in his life didn’t mean that he didn’t want his best friend to share in all of this and it didn’t mean that he didn’t want to be the person she could lean on. No matter how many times she tried to keep him at an arm’s distance, he was still going to muscle in on the shrimp … as long as there wasn’t someone there first. Riley didn’t want to be that guy, especially not tonight, when he was going to have an incredible night with Danny but it had been playing on his mind.
Danny knew it too. Sighing, Riley mustered up a smile for his boyfriend as he glanced sideways at him. They were all always trying to do the right thing for the right reason, while they were like that there would always be times when it turned out to be the wrong thing in the end. ”Did I ever tell you I love how wise you are?” he asked honestly. ”I promise I’ll find her tonight. See if we can work this thing out, at the very least I can see if she’ll tell me who she was kissing in her home.” It might end up being like trying to pry a clam open to get Terra to talk but Riley knew whatever happened, as long as the air was a little clearer by the time last dance was called, he’d feel a lot easier about the whole thing. ”It still could’ve been hate at first sight,” he warned. Any parent who really cared about their kid was only bothered about that one thing though, their happiness. He was glad he could give that to Danny. Maybe it was something his own mom was finally coming around to. Riley grimaced faintly as he finally started the car. ”That’s a scary thought,” he said on a chuckle. Luckily by the time they reached the school the thought of his boyfriend and mom meeting later was firmly in the back of his mind. Riley grinned as he eased back from Danny’s kiss. ”As ready as I’m ever gonna be. It’s my first proper prom.” He climbed out of the car, rounding the front of it to offer Danny his hand. ”You might have to watch your toes. It’s been a while since I did the whole slow dance thing.” Proms hadn’t always been the easier thing in the world to get his dad to stick around for. That was the time of year when signings were ramping up and school hopping was at its absolute worst.

There was a time when Danny had felt sure that he and Riley were never going to get this far but he was glad that they had done. Ever since the two of them found each other again in Mystic Falls things had started falling into place and they were happy together, happier than Danny had ever been in any of his previous relationships in fact. He knew that he’d had a habit of picking the wrong guys in the past but with Riley he finally felt like he had managed to get it right. They were good together and Danny knew that he didn’t want to be with anyone else but that made what was going to happen in the next few months that much scarier. Danny had already received acceptance letters to some great colleges around the country but all of his friends were planning on heading to Whitmore when high school came to an end. Danny had already followed them half way across the country to help them save Allison and the truth was that he wasn’t sure that he could leave them now, let alone leave Riley behind. Danny knew that Scott was facing the same dilemma at the moment given that he didn’t want to leave Bonnie or any of them behind so it was something that Danny knew that he needed to think long and hard about. He hoped that his parents would accept it if he decided to stay close to home to go to college instead but only time would tell. Now wasn’t the time to be thinking about any of that, though, now was a time for the two of them to enjoy being together and being surrounded by all of their friends. With everything that had happened over the last couple of years Danny knew that they had all earned a night like tonight and he wanted to make the most of it for as long as it lasted. He wasn’t sure what was going to happen next or what the next threat they were all going to face was but at the end of the day one thing he had realised over the last few years was that they could get through just about anything and that was something that wasn’t going to change no matter where they ended up. “No you haven’t but I could get used to hearing it,” Danny admitted, a smile working its way across his face as he looked over at Riley. “I know you’ll figure it out. Good friends are hard to come by, you don’t want anything to come between the two of you,” he said gently. Riley and Terra had been friends for such a long time so he knew that it wasn’t worth letting distance come between them. Jackson was still his best friend even though the guy no longer lived in the country so if they could make it work then he knew that Riley and Terra could as well. “I’ve done a few things to shock my parents over the years but they’ve always stuck by me. They want me to be happy and I’m happier than I’ve ever been with you. They were never going to hate you,” Danny assured him. “You’re going to have a great time, trust me,” he promised as Riley said that it was his first prom. Danny had always made a point of going to all of the events back in Beacon Hills and he had done the same since moving to Mystic Falls. “Good job I’m tough,” he teased, climbing out of the car and taking Riley’s outstretched hand before leading the way into the school. It didn’t take them long to reach the gym and Danny felt a smile work its way across his face as he looked around them. “They’ve really gone all out for this.”RILEY PARKER

There were in an amazing place now but there’d been some hurdles to get there. If he was pessimistic Riley would’ve said that his life had been filled with them up until now but the truth was, there’d barely been molehills until his dad had made him pack up in Hawaii and leave. The moves had always been there before but while they’d been frustrating they’d been his version of normal. Another move, yet another new school every couple of weeks or months. He would’ve given anything to stop them, or al least he thought he would’ve done. The guy who’d been broken hearted on the plane really hadn’t had a clue about what was waiting ahead of him. The bite he’d been barely handling until he’d found Danny here and had really learned what it was, what was happening inside of his own body. Tearing the truck to pieces, being kidnapped, dying when Niklaus Mikaelson had torn his heart out and coming back again. Finding Terra here and then feeling like he was losing his best friend all over again. They were mountains he’d had to climb and was still picking his way over. Riley knew that there’d probably always be more there but for tonight, almost all of them were still just smudges on the horizon that could be ignored for the evening. He had plans for an incredible night with his boyfriend that were going to blind him to them all for now, except for one.
Riley really didn’t want their whole night to focus on his mom, or him being an absolutely shitty friend to Terra but he knew that he needed to try and patch things up with his friend tonight. With Danny at his side being his voice of wisdom and compassion Riley had a feeling that if he was lucky he’d managed to do it. If he hadn’tbeen driving he would’ve leaned over and kissed him now but he made do with taking Danny’s hand and lifting it to his lips as he kept his eyes squarely on the road. ”You’re gonna hear it a lot more from me from now on, because it’s true. I … sometimes I just get caught up with things going round and round in my head or I open my mouth too early and mess things up.” He’d done that at the school and had regretted it since. He drew in a deep breath, let it out again. ”It won’t,” he promised. ”We’ll find a way through this, we always have done before. If it comes to it I’ll tell her everything that happened. I tried not to but if that’s all that will work I’ll say every word of it.” It would be exposing his friend to a sort of danger he hadn’t wanted Terra near but hiding things never worked out well for anybody. Glad to be able to change the subject he glanced over at Danny and grinned. ”I’m really glad to hear it. You’re gonna have to tell me about those things you did to shock them later though.” Hopefully what happened tonight wouldn’t be one of those things. With Danny’s promise ringing in his ears Riley got out of the car and offered his hand to his boyfriend. ”You really are,” he murmured. His mouth fell open as they reached the gym, his eyes widening as he looked around. ”Wow. Caroline’s honestly a miracle worker. Do we try out the dance floor first or hydrate before I stomp on your toes all night?” His lips were curved into a grin as he drew Danny closer by their joined hands.
