“Of course I do,” Dec laughed. The two of them had lived next door to each other their whole lives and he had learned a long time ago to pay attention to whatever Caroline said to him. It had been easy for the two of them to become friends and that friendship had only grown stronger over the years. They were different people to the ones they had been while they were growing up but one thing that had never changed was the fact that they could rely on each other for anything. He had tried to be there for Caroline through everything with her parents and becoming a vampire and she had been there for him just as much in return. He trusted her with his life which was why he had confided in her about his family’s secret and it had come as a relief to be able to share that with someone who had never thought that he was crazy or turned away from him out of fear. “Tell me about it,” he nodded. It felt like only yesterday that the two of them had started high school and now they were only a few weeks away from being done with it altogether. So much had changed over the last four years and he had no idea what the future was going to hold for either of them but he knew that they would tackle it together the same way they did just about everything else. “You think so?” he asked with a grin, unable to deny that he was surprised considering just how obsessed Caroline had been with him when they had started high school. The truth was he was actually pleased to hear her say that even if he wasn’t entirely sure if she meant it. Somewhere along the way something had changed within him and he had started seeing her as more than a friend but he had seen what had happened with Elena and Matt had progressed from friends to a relationship only for it to crash and burn and he knew that he didn’t want the same to happen between him and Caroline. That and the fact that he was certain that she only saw him as a friend were the two reasons why he knew better than to say anything to her about it. He valued their friendship so much and he knew that the last thing he wanted to do was ruin that by saying something to her. “Being a were tiger has its advantages,” he chuckled. It had made it a lot easier to do everything that Caroline had needed him to do and it had meant that he had been able to do more of it on his own and it had certainly paid off. It wasn’t long before the two of them were dancing and he felt a smile touch his lips as Caroline’s hands came to rest on his shoulders. “I want to stay close to my family so I’m thinking of going to Whitmore but I haven’t quite decided on a major yet,” he admitted before taking her hand and twirling her around as they danced. “How about you?”CAROLINE FORBES

Caroline let out a small chuckle at that before she shook her head. "honestly, I think you're way hotter than him. Plus, I was this... naive little girl who thought every actor was good-looking. What matters is the person from the inside, not the outside. I've learned that much now after trusting the wrong person one too many times." She had trusted Damon because she thought he was mad hot and because she knew that showing up with him would give her a lot of attention. She used to care about such trivial things and now that she's older and somewhat wiser, she can look back to that moment and learn from it.
To her, Declan had shown her one too many times that he was the perfect best friend. Someone she can count on, no matter what. He had told her countless times she was a strong person when she believed less of herself. Just like right now, he was doing everything he could to distract her from the dark thoughts lingering in her head. Caroline found herself snapping out of her thoughts when she heard his next words before she chuckled. "Yeah, it definitely does." Caroline definitely found it amazing how were-tigers actually exist. When he first told her, she was skeptical about it. She can believe the part about vampires and so on. But weretigers? It was actually pretty cool.
She listened to him before she nodded her head. A small 'oh' escaped her lips when Declan twirled her around. A soft smile appeared on her lips before she released a soft hum. "Definitely Whitmore. I don't plan on going anywhere far." The thought of moving away felt foreign to the young girl. She didn't want to think about it for a second. She had a lot of memories here in Mystic Falls. She can't just... bail. "So I guess we'll be seeing more of each other then." Caroline looked happy about that. "Don't worry, I promise I won't ask you to move heavy boxes then." Caroline teased with a playful smile on her lips.

“I’ll have to remember that,” Dec chuckled as Caroline said that she thought he was way hotter than Tom Cruise. He had lost count of the amount of times that she had talked about him during their freshman year but it seemed that that ship had sailed and if he was honest it was something that he didn’t mind at all considering he had always been certain that Caroline could do much better anyway. “In all fairness a lot of them are,” he offered before taking her hand in his and giving it a gentle squeeze. “I know that you’ve had some bad experiences with relationships but you know that not every guy is like them. There are some good ones out there,” he said gently. Whether any of them would ever actually be good enough for Caroline he wasn’t sure but he hoped that she would get the chance to find out. If he was honest the thought of her being with someone else was enough to make him feel a little jealous considering that he had been thinking about her as more than a friend for some time but he was pretty sure that all she saw him as was a friend so he knew better than to make things awkward between them. At the end of the day all he wanted was for Caroline to be happy and he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to make that happen. Dec knew that things would have been completely different between them if he’d kept the truth about what he was from Caroline but as far as he was concerned that had never been an option. She had stood by him through absolutely everything and he had done the same for her in return so he had known that there was no way that he could have kept something like this from her. He had always known that he would follow in the footsteps of his parents and his older siblings and become a weretiger and he had confided in her about absolutely everything after his first shift. It had been good having someone outside of his family that he could talk to and if anything it had only brought the two of them closer. “I had a feeling you might say that,” Dec admitted as she said that she was definitely going to Whitmore. He knew that there were probably plenty of people who couldn’t wait to get out of Mystic Falls but Caroline wasn’t one of them and neither was he. He could have left after his run in with the first hunter that had tried to kill him but he hadn’t, instead he had stayed and he didn’t regret that decision one bit. “It sounds like it, I’m looking forward to it,” he nodded. “It wouldn’t be the same without you.” They had been through so much together already so as far as he was concerned it seemed only right that the face college together too. As she spoke again, he couldn’t help but laugh. “I wouldn’t mind but something tells me you’ve probably got that covered yourself now,” he chuckled. Caroline was stronger now than she was before and something told him that she wouldn’t need him for things like that anymore but that didn’t mean that he wouldn’t still lend a hand when he could. Caroline's lips stretched to form a gentle smile when she heard Dec's words. They were definitely more than enough to make her feel better. "I know." Her gentle voice made itself known as she looked at Declan with a certain look in her eyes that might just be hard to decipher. She looked at him like she believed every word he said about there being a good guy out there. "I'm looking at one of them right now." Those words were supposed to only be a thought of his. They were never supposed to leave her lips or make themselves known but they had left her lips before she could stop them and for a moment, she looked shocked by her own blunt comment before her expression softened. She thought of taking her words back, but she never did and instead, she sent him a gentle smile of hers.
Caroline let out a soft chuckle at his words before she looked down at her arm. "Uh, duh. Have you seen these guns?" Caroline joked with a playful smile resting on her lips, her hand lifting from Declan's shoulder to brush back a strand of blonde hair away from her face so she could look at him better. "I guess being a vampire comes with its perks, huh?" Caroline hoped that soon enough, she will be able to grow to love herself and her change some more, but right now, it was all so overwhelming her, especially with all the scents surrounding her. She kept on picking on different conversations without meaning to and it was starting to give her a headache. Her smile switched into a grimace when she grew uncomfortable with the developing headache. "Sorry, it's just ... a lot of people." She explained with a small sigh leaving her lips. "Do you mind if we take a walk for a little?"

One thing that Dec had figured out pretty quickly was that a lot of high school relationships weren’t built to last. A lot of teenagers, himself included at times, had no idea what they wanted and were prone to being drawn towards the wrong kind of person completely. He would be the first to admit that he had often done just that, none of his relationships had been particularly good with him but he had been oblivious to that for a time while he was in them. It was only after they ended that he had been able to see just how true that was and he knew that he didn’t want to make that same mistake again. He knew that things could be different but right now he knew that he just wanted to get through the rest of his senior year in one piece. Caroline’s words were enough to make Dec’s cheeks flush red and he felt a smile touch his lips. “I’m glad you think so,” he admitted. Whether she had meant that in the way he was taking it he wasn’t sure but it meant a lot to him to hear her say those words anyway. He had always tried to do right by Caroline and he knew that he always would. He had always liked to think that he was pretty good at reading Care just like she was good at reading him in return but for a moment he couldn’t tell what she was thinking. It was only fleeting, though, as soon enough her expression softened and he found himself smiling at her in return. As she spoke again he couldn’t help but laugh. “You can joke all you want but I think we should try putting your strength to the test one of these days,” he chuckled. Being a weretiger meant that his own strength was enhanced but he couldn’t deny that he was curious to see what Caroline was capable of now as well. “It does and I know you’ll learn to embrace them in time,” he assured her. It had taken him a while to get used to it after he first started shifting but now he was comfortable in his own skin and he had a handle on his abilities and he was confident that in time Caroline would get there too. As she grimaced before apologising, Dec brought his hand up and ran it down her cheek gently. “You have nothing to apologise for,” he assured her. “I don’t mind at all, let’s get you out of here,” he said, letting his hand run down her arm before taking her hand in his and leading them away from the others who were still dancing. A shy smile soon appeared on Caroline's lips before she shook her head a little bit. Still finding it so weird that she had said that out loud like that, it definitely left her feeling so exposed and she hated that feeling. Nothing ever came good from her exposing how she felt so bluntly. She was manipulated without any mercy and left to pick the broken pieces of herself.
Caroline's gaze slowly shifted to her hands. With her change, she had heightened speed and strength now. She was no longer the helpless little Caroline who let Damon manipulate and toss her around like she had no control over herself or her own actions and for a while, she was. But now, it's entirely different. After her turn, she started feeling like she was an entirely different person and there was no changing that now. She refuses to go back to her old ways, to become the weak girl once again. "I know. I have all the help I need." Without her friends, she would have completely lost it. "And I would be more than happy to try that strength of mine on that bitch Katherine. Make her pay for turning me." But Katherine was no newly turned vampire. She was strong and she was so good at manipulating her and making her believe she was Tatia.
A soft smile appeared on Caroline's lips when she heard his reassurance. She squeezed his hand gently the second it held her own. "Thank you." And she meant that. She was truly grateful for him being here by her side tonight. Sadly, Caroline was not given enough time to actually get out because soon enough, there was the telltale sound of a glass falling and breaking into small pieces, though she was not concerned about the glass but about the yelp that followed along with the smell of blood. "Oh my god.." Caroline whispered, she could feel the moment her control began to slip as the veins under her eyes began to show. "Dec.. I-- I smell blood. It's so close. Oh god, I don't know if I can hold back.. I'm g-gonna lose control." It was so tempting. It was like dangling a flask of water in front of a dehydrated person, or dangling meat in front of a hungry predator. She was starting to lose control fast.

Dec had always thought that he had known how Caroline felt about him, after all they had grown up right next door to each other and she had always been his best friend, but the comment she had made was enough to make him wonder if perhaps what he was feeling wasn’t quite so one sided after all. Almost as soon as the thought crossed his mind he dismissed it though, Caroline could have her pick of pretty much any guy at school who had a life that was much less complicated than his own so he knew that it was only a matter of time before she found someone that she liked. When she did he knew that he would be happy for her the way he always was although he knew that he would have to warn the guy against hurting her considering that she deserved so much better than to end up nursing a broken heart again. No matter what he felt for her he wanted her to be happy more than anything so he knew that he would do whatever he could in order to make that happen. He knew that a lot had changed for Caroline lately and it saddened him to think that the decision had been taken out of her hands and made for her by someone who had just wanted to mess with a few people in town but he also knew Caroline better than most. No matter what life threw at her she never failed to find a way to make the best of it and he knew that she would figure out how to do the same again with this in time. “If you ever get the chance I’ll be right there with you,” he assured her. “She doesn’t get to turn your life upside down and get away with it.” He had always been protective of Caroline but after what Katherine had done he couldn’t help but feel even more so and he knew that if he had the chance to make her pay for what she had done to Caroline then he would take it. Nodding was Caroline thanked him, Dec stopped abruptly at the sound of breaking glass and he turned to face Caroline even as the smell of iron reached his nostrils. Without even thinking about it he moved both of his hands to the sides of her face and kept his eyes locked on hers. “You can do this Care, I believe in you,” he said gently, his voice full of certainty as he spoke. “Just focus on me, you’ve got this.”CAROLINE FORBES

Caroline can't remember a time of her life where Declan wasn't there for her. When she first got rejected by that guy Timmy who refused to push her on the swing when she was little, he was there to console her and also push her on the swing. When she learned how to ride a bike, he was the first to see her in all her glory without any fear on her face. When she left Damon, he was also there for her, eating ice cream by her side as she vented for hours but he didn't get bored of her. He never did.
"Yeah? Okay. We'll handle her together, then." But would that even be enough? She found herself doubting that. She was not just any vampire which remained her biggest concern. She could lie so easily like it was her second language, she could deceive with such ease and she could betray the trust of others without a hitch of breath. But the thought of her roaming the streets left unharmed after having turned her and taken away the last part of normalcy in her life made her stomach twist and turn.
Thanks to her, she was about to lose control in the middle of Prom. Once again, she realized how she was never going to be normal. How the smell of blood could see easily become her undoing. The sound of Declan's voice pulled her out, but it was only for a few seconds before a hiss left her lips. "I can't.. I can't, Dec. Her blood.." The scent was so alluring, pulling her to where the girl like a pied piper. She grasped Declan's jacket tightly to ground herself to the current moment. "I don't want to hurt anyone, please.." Caroline whispered, her eyes squeezed shut tightly, hoping it would help her but it only made her focus on her sense of smell more and that was when she began to struggle in Declan's hold, wanting to push away so she could get her and feed.

Dec knew that he was fortunate to have grown up with a twin sister but he had also grown up with a best friend living right next door. He and Caroline had always looked out for each other, they had been each other’s confidant for as long as he could remember even though they had others that they could talk to as well and whenever either of them needed cheering up they were only a minute away. He had tried to be there for Caroline each time her heart got broken and she had been there for him when each of his relationships came to an end as well. Each time someone hurt Caroline it made him feel angry and he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to protect her heart and stop it from getting broken again. Caroline deserved so much better than the hand she had been dealt in life and even though he knew that she didn’t necessarily believe that sometimes he certainly did so he wanted to make things better for her in any way he could. “Just like we do everything else,” he nodded. He wasn’t sure whether it would be enough but there were plenty of others around who cared about Caroline as well so if it came down to it then he was pretty sure that it wouldn’t be too difficult to get them to help as well. No matter what happened they needed to make sure that Katherine didn’t get the chance to hurt anyone like that again. Up until the glass broke Caroline had been doing so well at staying in control but he could tell straight away that the smell of blood was too great and he knew that he needed to come up with a way to stop her from doing something that she would regret and fast. “You can,” he insisted, knowing that Caroline wouldn’t want to hurt anyone no matter how great her cravings were. Dec didn’t falter as Caroline grasped the front of his jacket but as she closed her eyes before beginning to struggle against his hold he knew that he was running out of time and options. The girl wasn’t even close to the door out of the gym just yet so he knew that he needed to buy them some time and in that moment he acted on instinct, knowing that it would take something drastic to snap Caroline out of it and focus her mind on something else. He had been so worried about ruining their friendship by telling her how he felt but right now none of that mattered, all that mattered was making sure that Caroline didn’t do something that she would regret so he did the only thing that he could think of to do – he leaned forward and kissed her. Caroline had been practicing with Stefan for a good amount of time to make sure she was in good condition to go to Prom and have the time of her life. She showed progress and she started feeding on animal blood and it worked in keeping that beast inside of her calm down. She really thought a chance at this, but turns out, she had absolutely no chance in fighting against the alluring call of blood. The girl was still fussing about it instead of going to the bathroom to wash it away which only made her troubles grow tenfold.
Caroline could hear the sound of her blood pumping through her veins, she could hear the sound of her heartbeat, the sound of her voice falling on deaf ears as she seemed to focus only on her heart beat. The desire to make her way over and sink her teeth deep inside of her flesh was consuming her, making her struggle against her best friend who was still not releasing her which only made her grow more frustrated, her eyes still clenched shut until she heard something drip on the floor. It must be her blood. Caroline's hands began to tremble violently, her fangs visible as her upper lip curled in a snarl.
Caroline wanted nothing more than to go there and drink from her blood until there was not a single drop left in her system, until she could not... Caroline let out a soft gasp when she suddenly felt warm lips against her own and just like that, those dark thoughts vanished completely until there was nothing left behind.
She found herself responding back to the kiss because despite having not seen who it was, she didn't have to guess too hard about the matter. The feeling of his soft lips moving against her own was addictive in every bit as her hand drifted up to grasp his hair on the nape of his neck, her fangs gently grazing against his bottom lip and when she felt blood flow into her mouth, she pulled away from the kiss that was growing more heated and looked at Declan with wide eyes. "Did we just..?" Caroline whispered, still looking completely in shock as her hand drifted up to brush against her lips as if she could still feel his lips against her own. She looked down at her fingers to see them stained with blood. "I'm.. I'm sorry. I need-- I need to go." She had hurt him. She had messed up.. Caroline took a small step back then another before she turned around to make her way out of the gym.

Dec knew just how hard Caroline had been working to make sure that she was ready to go to the dance she had been waiting to attend for the last four years and he also knew that there were plenty of people around who would make sure that she didn’t end up doing something that she could regret. The moment the glass broke he could feel two pairs of eyes on them from across the room, both Stefan and Scott had looked their way in concern but Dec gave a subtle shake of his head to indicate that they should stay where they were. He knew that Stefan deserved to spend the evening with Elena and Scott with Bonnie and he trusted Caroline completely so he knew that she would fight the bloodlust she was now saddled with. This definitely wasn’t the way he had ever thought that her life would turn out and he was certain that Caroline hadn’t thought that it would either but he had already seen subtle changes in her and he hoped that over time she might start to feel more comfortable with who she had become. It didn’t matter to him that she was a vampire, she was still his best friend and the girl he had a crush on and he knew that nothing was going to change that. Kissing Caroline was risky and he knew that he might just be throwing away all those years of friendship in a few short moments but he had needed a way to bring Caroline back to herself and as he heard her gasp he felt a smile touch his lips as he realised that it seemed to be working. In the back of his mind he knew that the fact that he had been wondering what it would be like to kiss her might have factored into it, that there might have been another way to get her to snap out of it after all, but none of that mattered now as her hand moved to the back of his neck and she kissed him back. Taking half a step forward to close the distance between them even more, Dec wasn’t at all phased when Caroline’s fangs grazed his lip and drew blood. It was too easy to lose himself in the kiss but too soon it was over and he nodded at her question. “We did,” he confirmed before feeling his heart sink as Caroline apologised before taking a step back and turning away from him. “Caroline, wait,” he said, reaching forward to catch her hand before she could disappear into the crowd. “You have nothing to apologise for. Please don’t go,” he said, a pleading note in his voice as he spoke. He didn’t know whether her reaction was to the kiss itself or the fact that she had drawn blood but either way he knew that he needed to find out. CAROLINE FORBES

Caroline never thought the day would come where her lips would be covered by her best friend's. She never thought that her feelings could actually be returned, but she had to remind herself that the possibility of Declan having kissed her because he wanted to ground her back to reality was far too big for her to ignore or pretend that was not the case. But she couldn't deny the fact that she had been thinking about Declan in a romantic way for such a long time now that her feelings for him are not so platonic anymore but she could never bring herself to actually admit her feelings to him or lean for that kiss. She had no idea how she had held her breath when their lips connected in a kiss.
But she had to ruin it by hurting his lip. It was the taste of blood that pulled her to reality and before she could disappear in the crowd of people, Declan stopped her. She hesitated for a moment before she finally turned around, her brows furrowed and her expression apologetic. "Yes. Yes, I do need to apologize, Dec. I nearly mauled your lip like.. like a starving animal." Caroline threw her arms up in frustration after gesturing to the other's bottom lip. It healed, but still.. She felt terribly guilty for it.
Her eyes drifted down to Declan's lips before she gulped dryly when she recalled how they had felt against her own. She could easily recall how addictive it had been to kiss him. "I was fine before it all, you know?" Caroline began and it absolutely made zero sense. "Before I woke up and realized that I don't like you as friend, Declan." Caroline's voice gradually got louder as frustration took over her. Ever since her turn, she had been an emotional mess and right now was an example of how she could get. "I like you as something more and that scares me. I've always said the wrong thing, I've always been the reason behind the break up. I'm-- I'm shallow and emotional and.. a control freak and I'm scared that I'm going to screw this up like I've screwed up everything and anything I've ever called special, so yeah, Declan, I'm sorry.. I'm sorry for liking you. I'm sorry for feeling so jealous whenever a girl looks your way, knowing that she'll never know you more than I do and for admitting that now.. I just put all that extra weight on you and you don't deserve that. I'm sorry for messing up our friendship. I just.. need to go. Please. I don't know what else is gonna come out of my mouth and I don't wanna dig a deeper grave for myself." Caroline shook her head and turned around again to pass through the crowd.

For as long as he could remember Dec had been thinking of Caroline as more than a friend. He had done his best to ignore it and keep it buried, especially after the relationship between Elena and Matt crashed and burned, but it hadn’t changed the way that he felt about his best friend. Caroline knew him better than just about anyone and she had been there for him through everything, both the good and the bad. He had never really taken much notice before when everyone around them had said that boys and girls couldn’t be just friends but in a way now he knew that perhaps they were right. He had other friends that were girls but none of them knew him the way that Caroline did and he knew that that was perhaps the reason why his past relationships had all failed. Even without realising it he had found himself comparing them to her and no one had even come close to matching up to her. He had thought about saying something so many times but each time he had refrained, certain that it was only a one sided thing and that there was no way that she would ever feel the same but after that kiss he wasn’t so sure. “I don’t care about that,” Dec assured her, well aware that there were now more eyes in the room on the two of them. This perhaps wasn’t the place to talk about what had just happened but he knew that he couldn’t just let Caroline walk away from him either, otherwise he knew that he would only end up regretting it. The kiss they had shared was such that he had never experienced before and even though it would probably take time to figure things out he knew that he didn’t want to throw away something that could possibly be something great if there was a chance for them. Once more Dec felt his heart sink as Caroline said that she didn’t like him as a friend but her next words were enough to make his breath catch in his throat and for a moment he truly was stunned. He knew that he should say something, he wanted to say something, but no matter how hard he tried the words just wouldn’t come. Every time he had thought about telling Caroline how he felt about her he had never for one moment thought that she would ever feel the same but now here she was telling him that she did after all and he knew that he needed to do something if he was going to salvage this. Knowing and actually being able to do something were unfortunately two very different things and it was only when Caroline shook her head and turned around again that Dec finally snapped out of it, knowing that if he didn’t pull himself together and be honest with her like she had just been honest with him then he might just end up losing her forever. That was the reason why he took a few steps forward and he reached for her hand once more, needing to stop her so that he could say what he needed to say. “You can’t just tell me all of that and then walk away Care, I won’t let you. We deserve more than that,” he said, his voice certain as he spoke and his eyes locked onto hers once more. “You’re right, I wouldn’t say you’re shallow but you are emotional and a control freak but I’ve known that since we were kids and it has never changed the way that I feel about you,” he said, his eyes searching hers for any sign of a reason as he spoke. “Do you want to know why none of my past relationships worked out?” he asked, not bothering to wait for an answer before continuing. “It’s because the person I was with was never you. They never even came close. I’ve hated seeing you with other guys but I’ve supported you because more than anything I want you to be happy even if you find that happiness with a guy that isn’t me. I don’t always get this right, neither of us does, but if you’ve messed up our friendship then so have I because I like you as more than a friend too and I should probably feel sorry about that but I don’t. This scares me too but you captured my heart a long time ago.”CAROLINE FORBES

━ but you're a masterpiece. ━
Caroline was once again stopped by Declan, her shoulders rising and falling with the big breath she caught then slowly released. She turned to look at him better, the emotion in her eyes could easily be conveyed as shame. She felt bad for dropping all of that on Declan. But once again, she had said the wrong thing and instead of staying quiet about her feelings, she decided that now would be a good timing for her to confess where basically everyone could hear them if they focused enough. He was right, they deserved more than that and they also deserved to be in private for this, but she wasn't even thinking straight at this point.
Every time she tried to open her lips to say something, Declan would stop her and she would find herself even more shocked than before. His confession, his words, oh they were more than enough to render her speechless and oh Caroline was never the speechless type, but something about Declan confessing to her had her in a state of shock where she could only open and close her lips like a gaping fish before her expression softened as relief flooded her. "Dec..." She whispered, feeling a little overwhelmed as his words continued repeating in her head to the point where it all felt like a dream. Was she dreaming? No. No, she wasn't.
"You really feel that way about me?" Caroline asked, feeling like an idiot for not having confessed sooner. "Oh my god, why did we not do this sooner. We spent this whole time.." She shook her head at that before she released a small chuckle, the tension in her shoulders finally loosening. "I'll never forgive myself if I mess this up, too." She had done that one too many times now... She just can't do it again. Not with Declan. What they had was special and unlike anything she had ever felt before. "Sorry I was so overdramatic... Newly turned and all." She easily blamed it on being a newly turned vampire but she knew that was not the case. "I.. don't want to leave." Caroline admitted, her voice soft as she slowly moved forward and closer to Declan, coming to a stop in front of him, her smile still there.

Dec knew that he could have just let Caroline walk away and act like nothing had happened but he knew that he didn’t want to do that. Just the fact that she felt that way was enough to make his heart ache and he knew that he would regret it for the rest of his life if he didn’t stop her from walking away. He knew that things had changed for them now, after all he was a weretiger and Caroline was a vampire, but he also knew that how he felt about her hadn’t changed and he didn’t want to pretend that it had just because things were more complicated for them both now. No matter what life had thrown at them they had found a way through it and he had learned a long time ago that they were much stronger when they were together so he knew that he needed to trust that whatever happened next they would figure it out together the same way they always did. He could see the shock written all over Caroline’s face when he came clean to her and he knew that his own expression had probably mirrored hers a few moments ago. He hadn’t known what to do or say when Caroline had told him how she felt about him but now when he felt like he was on the verge of losing her all of the things that he had been longing to say seemed to come tumbling out of his mouth and he didn’t regret a single word. As she asked if he really felt that way, he nodded. “I do,” he said gently. “I have done for a long time.” He had always been too scared to admit it earlier, too worried that he would end up throwing away the best thing that he had in his life because he had never for a minute thought that Caroline might feel the same way that he did. “We didn’t do this sooner because we were blind to what was really going on between us,” he said, a small smile working its way across his face as he looked over at her. “I didn’t want to say anything because I was so scared of losing you, I never thought you would feel the same,” he added. He had always felt like Caroline deserved so much better and he knew that he would do everything in his power to make whatever this was going to turn into work. “You could never mess this up. We have been friends for too long to let that happen so no matter what happens you’ll always have me in your life,” he assured her, feeling with every word that he spoke that it was the truth. After seeing what had happened between Elena and Matt he had worried about ruining things with Caroline but the two of them had managed to go back to being friends after a while and his friendship with Caroline was something that was far too important to him to ever give up. “You have nothing to apologise for,” he chuckled before closing the distance between them even more as Caroline said that she didn’t want to leave. “So don’t,” he said, his smile returning as his hands found her waist and his lips found hers once more, pouring everything he felt for her into that one kiss. “That’s the first kiss we should have had,” he said, letting his forehead rest against hers for a moment as he lips brushed against hers.
