━ but you're a masterpiece. ━
Caroline was once perfectly human. She felt, she desired, she laughed, she cried, she did it all but it still felt like she hadn't done enough when it was all stripped away from her so harshly and so abruptly. With her being brought back as a vampire, everything just got so much harder. Her control always slipping no matter how hard she tried, those horrible memories of her killing someone and liking it shortly after. It left her in shambles, unsure if she would ever be able to overcome something so horrifying. She just wanted a second shot at pretending like her whole life wasn't falling apart. With Prom closing in, she thought of sitting it out, of not attending, fearful of losing control with the amount of people that would attend it, but then again, Prom was her only hope at pretending that she was okay. That something wasn't completely wrong with her life.
She stood in front of her body-length mirror, her eyes on the dress she had on. Once upon a time, Caroline would have fretted over every little detail in the dress as well as her makeup and hair, but now? She couldn't see how she looked, she could only recall how she had rushed to the mirror that day, that poor man's blood dripping from her chin. She could see her grey top, ruined with blood and her eyes dark and full of a dangerous will to hurt, to take, to kill. She had never looked more sinister in her life and that frightened her to her core. She wasn't any better from those mindless killing machines roaming the streets of Mystic Falls. She had taken an innocent life and the worst part was that she'd liked it. A lot. The taste of his blood, rich and thick on her tongue-- Caroline snapped out of her throat and straightened her dress for the umpteenth time to get imaginary wrinkles off her dress and feigned a smile. "You've got this, Caroline. Just.. breathe." She had done that pep talk countless times now and it worked the first time, a little bit on the second time and not so much on the third.
Caroline just released a deep breath and shook her head once more before she fixed her hair and took one last look before she turned around to grab her small purse. It was time for her to go, so she made her way down the steps before sitting on the last one, waiting for Declan to come and pick her up to head to Prom in the car she had rented especially for this night. Her mother was in the kitchen with her camera in her left hand, ready to snap at least twenty pictures of Caroline with her date. Despite it being completely platonic, her mother was still so adamant about taking those pictures and who was she to crush her dreams? She couldn't say no, it was the least she could do to her oblivious mom who was sharing her home with a monster.

Before Dec had even mentioned to Caroline that he had been thinking about skipping prom he had already changed his mind and realised that he would regret it if he didn’t go. He hadn’t had a date but he had known that there were plenty of people who were bound to be going alone so he hadn’t really thought too much of it. As soon as Caroline had said that she didn’t have a date either then everything had fallen into place, though, and ever since he had asked Caroline to go with him he had found himself looking forward to it. He knew that she had been through a lot lately, she had been turned into a vampire by someone who looked just like Elena and Tatia out of spite and he knew that he would make Katherine regret that decision if their paths ever crossed. She wasn’t his focus right now though, Caroline was. He wouldn’t have blamed her if she had decided to skip the event but he had known that deep down she would only regret it the same way that he would have if he had decided against going so a little gentle persuasion had been in order and as it happened Caroline hadn’t needed much of that at all. He knew that it was a difficult time for her at the moment, she was adjusting to what she had become and all of the changes that came with it, but she was still the same Caroline and she was still his best friend so Dec knew that he was going to stand by her and help her through it as best he could. He had been doing that ever since she told him what had happened to her, making sure that he was always there when she needed someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on, and that was never going to change. Straightening his tie after he had pulled on his jacket, Dec glanced over at the clock on the wall. He was ready a little earlier than he had told Caroline he would meet her but he knew that it wouldn’t hurt to head over there a little early. If he had to wait then so be it but the truth was that he didn’t mind that at all. Caroline had rented a car to take the two of them there so it wouldn’t take them long to get there and after rolling his eyes at the comments from his older siblings as he made his way downstairs, Dec said a quick goodbye to his parents before heading next door to Caroline’s and knocking on the door. Soon enough her mom answered and Dec flashed her a smile as she stepped aside to let him in, the conversation flowing easily with the woman he had known pretty much his whole life. Catching sight of Caroline sitting on the stairs, Dec’s smile widened and he made his way over to her. “You look incredible Care,” he admitted, offering her a hand getting to her feet before holding out the corsage he had picked out for her and kissing her cheek gently. “How are you feeling about this, are you ok?” he asked, his voice low enough that they wouldn’t be overheard even though her mom had already disappeared to get the camera. ━ but you're a masterpiece. ━
Caroline traced the back of her hand with her thumb, her gaze focused on a spot on the floor, her feelings concealed well so she wouldn't worry her mother who seemed all too happy about Prom tonight, always ready to go grab her camera to take pictures of the special day, knowing well that the photo will be framed like the others and placed on the shelf. She didn't blame her mom for being excited, nor did she feel somewhat overwhelmed by it, she was just stuck in her head with everything that was going on, Caroline felt beyond distressed, her heart always filled with worry that she would get into a bad situation at Prom where she'll lose control over herself and everything that made her ... her. But she also knew that Declan won't let her lose control, nor will Stefan.
Caroline snapped out of her thoughts when the doorbell rang. "I got it, I got it." Her mom announced, putting the camera down to go answer the door. Caroline's eyes laid on Declan and her features relaxed upon seeing him. She sent him a soft smile, watching as he chatted with her mom before his attention diverted back to Caroline. The compliment made her cheeks tint a faint red. "Thanks, Dec. You look very handsome." Caroline took his hand with a murmured 'thank you' as she was helped up to her feet. Her hands moved to her back to smooth out the dress and make sure it wasn't dirty or anything like that. Once she was done smoothing her dress, her smile softened when she saw the corsage in Declan's hand as it was given to her. "It's really pretty, thank you." She slipped it on, her smile still there on her lips even after the kiss was left on her cheek. His question made her release a small sigh, her smile fading a little. "Yeah, yeah. I'm fine. Baby steps, right?" Caroline brushed a strand of hair away from her face. "Except this baby step involves a lot of people around me aaand just thinking about makes me feel even more anxious, so I guess I'm not as okay as I thought I'd be." Caroline breathed out with a small chuckle following, although it didn't sound very genuine.

A few months ago Dec probably would have decided against going to prom and wouldn’t have even thought twice about it but now things were different. Two run ins with hunters had made him see things differently and considering he was pretty sure that he wouldn’t be as lucky if he ran into one for a third time, he knew that he wanted to make the most of everything that life had to offer. Graduation was right around the corner and Dec still hoped to be able to go to college like most of the people he was at school with but right now he had other things to focus on like enjoying the night with his friends. If nothing else it would give them one more chance to celebrate before graduation and Dec knew that that was something that he couldn’t pass up. Hearing that Caroline hadn’t had a date had helped, he had felt certain that she would have had picked some lucky guy to go with that evening but as it was she had been thinking about going alone so instead of them both doing that, they had decided to go together. It might have been a bit of a last minute decision compared to some of the pairings but as far as Dec was concerned he was happy about it. Care was his best friend and even if it meant that they only got to share a few dances then he was all for it. He knew that Caroline had been through a lot lately so they could both use a fun night. He knew that it wasn’t going to be easy for her being surrounded by so many people but she had managed to get through the last few days at school and there were going to be plenty of people around to make sure that she didn’t lose control so he knew that he just had to believe that she would be fine. It was clear to him that Caroline didn’t want to hurt anyone anyway and one thing he had learned about her pretty early on was that once she set her mind to something then nothing was going to stop her from making it happen. “Thanks,” he said, a smile touching his lips as she returned the compliment. Caroline really did look beautiful, she always did no matter what she wore but this was the first time in a long time that he had seen her dressed up like this and he knew that he was lucky to be going with her even if it was just as friends. “You’re welcome,” he said as she took the corsage from him. He hadn’t known what to go for but it suited her anyway. “You’re going to be fine,” he assured her as he gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “You’re going to have lots of friends around you too and I’ve got faith in you. You can do this.”CAROLINE FORBES

━ but you're a masterpiece. ━
Caroline had always been this naive little girl with a mouth that tends to say the wrong thing. Always. She had been hurt, fed on, compelled, rejected, and so much more than most people know about her, yet when they see her, she's always with a smile, always bright and kind. Some people tend to forget that despite it all, she's just a highschool student trying to get through her senior year alive. Despite her best efforts, despite it all... She was still fed Katherine's blood, she still woke up in that alleyway and still killed that man. His screams still ringing in her ears, the sight of his dead body on the ground still haunting her dreams with every moment. How could she ever forget? How could she look past what she had done to that man who's only fault was being there at the wrong moment? His pleas to let him go, his whimpers as he cried and latched onto every breath leaving his lips.
Those memories accompany her every time she feels hungry. Stefan had taught her to feed on animal blood and it did the job, though it tasted disgusting, it had her blood thirst under control and for once she felt okay but was she ready to be surrounded by endless scents in a confined place? Maybe she wasn't, but she just needed this one shot at normalcy and she can't let it go to waste. Caroline gave Declan a soft smile before she nodded her head. "I can do this." She sucked in a sharp breath before she finally let it go. Her eyes lifted to look at her mom who had her camera in her hand now. She smiled a little and gestured for Declan to look at the camera.

Dec had known Caroline for as long as he could remember and they had stood by each other through everything that life had thrown at them. He wouldn’t have blamed her if she had shut him out after he told her that he was a were tiger but she hadn’t, she had taken it in her stride and Dec liked to think that he had done the same when he had found out that she was a vampire. No matter what happened their friendship hadn’t changed and that was something that he was grateful for. He had seen subtle changes in Caroline ever since she was turned but she was essentially still the same girl that he had known his whole life and he knew that nothing was going to change that. Caroline had filled him in on what had happened when she completed the transition but it didn’t change the way that he saw her, nothing would be able to do that. She might have taken a life but she hadn’t done so willingly and that was something that he knew he was never going to blame her for. She was doing her best every day to stay in control of her bloodlust and as far as Dec was concerned that was something to be admired. He knew that Caroline was nervous about being around so many people in a relatively small space but he had faith in her even if she didn’t necessarily have it in herself and he knew that she wasn’t going to hurt anyone. Not only would he not let her hurt anyone but he knew that Stefan and the others wouldn’t let anything happen either. Caroline was more at risk than any of them considering that her mom was the Sheriff but she had done well so far and he knew that it wasn’t going to change that evening. “You can, you’ve got this,” he assured her before wrapping his arm around Caroline as he turned his attention to her mom and the camera she was holding. Once she had taken all of the photos that she wanted, Dec held his hand out to Caroline. “Are you ready to go?”CAROLINE FORBES

Caroline felt a small smile appear on her lips when Declan continuously encouraged her. She appreciated it a lot and it helped her raise her confidence quite a ton. She made sure to smile for the camera, letting her mom snap all the pictures needed to frame later, for sure. Seeing her smile made Caroline feel a lot better about herself and her own well-being. Her change was kept a secret from her mom because she knew she wouldn't be able to take it if she were to ever hear the truth about her change. She wanted to be her mom's little girl and never change, she never wanted to see a horrified look in her mom's eyes. Ever.
She snapped out of her thoughts when Declan's voice came through and her green eyes shifted to meet his. She felt a small smile appear on her lips and she nodded her head. "I am." She finally replied after sucking in a sharp breath of air and releasing it, calming her nerves. "Have fun, you guys." Liz spoke up from where she was, making Caroline's smile widen. "Thanks, mom. I'll see you later." And with that, she waited for Declan to lead her outside. She felt her anxiety rest aside for now as she focused more on the fun she was certain she was going to have. "I wonder if Bonbon and Elena are already there." She hummed, wondering if they had left earlier. "I'm so excited to see Bonnie and Scott together. I have a feeling they'll win King and Queen." Back then, Caroline would have gotten jealous at the idea of someone else winning the title but now that her life had changed head over heels, all those trivial things really mean nothing to her.

It had taken Dec a while to start feeling like himself again after he first started changing during with each full moon and he knew that it was probably the same for Caroline. Her life had changed completely when she became a vampire and she hadn’t even known that it was coming. She had known about the supernatural world because he had told her but he had never thought that Caroline would end up becoming a part of that world as well. He knew that it didn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing though, Caroline would get used to the heightened emotions and everything else sooner or later but until then he knew that he and the rest of her friends would be there to keep her grounded and make sure that she didn’t end up doing anything that she would regret later on. He knew that Caroline had already killed while she was in transition but he knew that that wasn’t her fault and she had been working hard to stay in control since then and if he was honest he was proud of her for that. She deserved a night of fun and Dec knew that he wanted to give her that if he could. Nodding as Caroline said that she was ready, Dec offered her mother a smile when she told them to have fun. “Thanks Liz,” he said, taking Caroline’s hand in his and giving it a gentle squeeze before leading the way outside. Dec had volunteered to drive the two of them there and back and while he knew that it perhaps wasn’t as exciting as hiring a car it did at least mean that if at any point Caroline wanted to make a quick getaway then they wouldn’t have to worry about answering any awkward questions. Leading the way over to his car, he stopped at the passenger door and held it open for her. “I think they probably are, or if not then they will be soon,” he assured her. He knew that none of them would miss it at least so one way or the other they would be there. As she spoke again, he felt his smile return. “You think so?” he asked as he closed the door behind her before climbing into the driver’s side and closing the door. “I’d say you’re definitely going to get one of the titles,” he admitted as he pulled the car onto the road and they set off for the school. Caroline was certainly grateful for Declan for taking it upon himself to drive them to school. She began making her way to the car, her gaze turning over to her best friend before she let out a small chuckle. "When is my gut feeling ever wrong?" She teased, feeling her mood become lighter and lighter. "I'd be pretty upset if I didn't. I came back from the dead for this." She joked, her lips stretching into a soft smile. She got in with a murmured 'thank you' under her breath before she reached for the seatbelt to put it on.
"If you ever feel the need to go and dance with someone else during Prom, you can do that, you know? I don't want you to feel.. I dunno, restricted, I guess." Caroline shrugged her shoulders lightly before a soft smile came to form on her lips. "I'm not that mean." She added a short moment after, her hand coming back to gently brush away the strand that was framing her face. "Still can't believe it's already Prom night. It feels like yesterday when I started prepping it from scratch." Time passed fast and now with her change, she doubted it'll move at all. She'll probably be able to feel every second of the day. She shook her head and reached for the radio to turn it on, wanting to put on some music to probably distract herself from her thoughts.

Hiring a car was the done thing for some when it came to going to prom and Dec had considered it but he had decided against it. He knew that the night was going to be difficult enough for Care being around so many people so if they took his car then it would mean that they would be able to make a quick getaway if they needed to at any point. It also meant that they would be able to talk openly without having to worry about being overheard and he knew that with the two of them that was probably a good thing. Even when they were little they had always been able to talk to each other about anything and that hadn’t changed as they had gotten older and for that he truly was grateful. “Very rarely,” he chuckled. He had learned a long time ago to trust Caroline’s gut instinct about things and it didn’t often steer them wrong. As she spoke again, he felt a smile touching his lips as he looked over at her. “It has a lot to live up to then,” he grinned, glad that Caroline felt like she could joke about that now. He knew that being a vampire wasn’t easy for her but he knew that he just had to believe that it would be just like everything else in her life and that sooner or later she would take it in her stride and he was going to be there with her every step of the way. Buckling his seatbelt, Dec hesitated for a moment as Caroline said that he could go and dance with someone else if he wanted to. “Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind,” he assured her although he wasn’t actually too sure how he felt about that. “The same goes for you,” he added, knowing that he wasn’t going to hold Caroline back if she did want to mingle without him and dance with others. She had always been at home in a crowd and it was one of the things that he had always admired about her so he hoped that it hadn’t changed. “I know you’re not,” he added with a grin. As she spoke again, he couldn’t help but laugh. “Time sure flies, now it is time to see how all of your hard work has paid off,” he said, offering her a smile as he pulled the car away from the pavement and they headed towards the school. The drive wasn’t a long one and he turned off the engine once he had pulled the car into an empty parking space. “Last chance to back out if you’re not ready for this,” he offered, knowing that it would be a shame but completely understandable if she was having second thoughts now that they had actually arrived. While Caroline doubted she will be spending her time with someone else, she didn't want Declan to feel restricted or like he was forced to stay with her, she didn't want to ruin the night for him with her drama and the way she was feeling, it was her problem and she didn't want to make Declan feel like he was forced to solve them for her or be there as an emotional support to keep her rooted to her spot. She failed to realize that Declan, in a way, served as her anchor tonight. Having him around will distract her and make her focus more on the night and having fun rather than the fact that she's a newly turned vampire who could easily lose control at any given time. She can't have that. "Thanks." She said in a soft voice, her hand brushing away a strand of hair that was purposefully left to frame her face.
She sent Declan a thankful smile when he agreed with her words about her not being a mean person. She had always doubted herself, always thinking of herself in a rather negative way, but maybe, just maybe that will change in the future and she won't be seen as a shallow person anymore. Caroline sucked in a sharp breath before she shook his head. "When have I ever backed out?" She asked with a teasing little smile on her lips. "I also did not just put all of that on to take it off, it's gonna be a hassle. We're going in." Caroline turned to look at Declan with a small smile on her lips. "I'm not gonna let my psycho other side ruin tonight for me. It's Prom, for god's sake. I started dreaming about this moment the second I entered high school."

Dec had asked Care to go to prom with him as a friend because neither of them had had a date but the truth was that a part of him had wanted to ask her anyway. Care was his best friend and she had stuck by him through everything and now it was his turn to do the same for her. He could still remember the times when they had gone off together when her parents had been arguing all the time before her dad had left and if there was one person that he could see staying by his side then it was her so it only seemed right that they enjoy their time at prom together too. They had started school together and they were going to end it together too. He knew that Caroline wouldn’t tear him away from anyone else if he wanted to spend time with someone else but right now he knew that he would have to be social and catch up with his friends while he was there but otherwise he was looking forward to spending time with her. “You never have been but I just needed to check,” Dec grinned as Caroline asked when she had ever backed out. It really wasn’t like her to do so even when things got tough so he really wasn’t surprised that she didn’t want to start doing that now but he had still felt the need to give her the option. He couldn’t deny that he admired her for still wanting to go though. “When you put it like that I guess we have to,” he chuckled, turning in his seat to look at Caroline as she did the same. “I know, I remember you telling me as we walked home that first day,” he laughed. “This will be fun and if at any point you feel like you need to get out of there just let me know and we’ll make a break for it,” he added, knowing that the last thing he wanted was for Care to end up sticking it out just for him when she felt really uncomfortable. “You won’t lose control, you’ve got this,” he assured her before climbing out of the car and moving around to the passenger side to open the door for her. For as long as Caroline can remember, she had been fantasizing about this moment. Ever since she saw an actress in a movie wear a pretty dress and go to Prom and have fun among other students with her perfect date, she had been hooked on the idea of having a perfect Prom experience after surviving through high school. For the young Forbes, it was never tough for her. She got it all figured out from the first day she joined high school and almost right away, she started wishing for the years to pass faster so she could attend Prom faster, but as the years passed, she started going through more and more and as she grew wiser and better at understanding herself and her own emotions, she started seeing that high school was not what the movies had made it out to be. It was far from an easy road to take or a bridge that she needs to cross to get to college faster. It was much more than that. She can see that now.
"Oh my god, you still remember that? God, that was so embarrassing. I was so convinced that I'm gonna take Tom Cruise with me to Prom and have everyone's head turn in jealousy." Just recalling how serious she had been made her laugh. Though her grin soon turned into a kind smile at his words. "Thank you." Hearing how he believed in her made her feel a lot better. She got out of the car when the door was opened for her. "Thank you." She whispered and quickly made sure her dress looked alright on her body before she took hold of Declan's arm. "Let's do this." She nodded her head before she confidently began walking with Declan to the school. As soon as she entered, she saw how everyone was having fun and enjoying the young night. It made her smile as she watched all her hard work pay off. The DJ played nice songs, the lights were perfect as well as everything else. "Dance?"

Dec had briefly thought about skipping the prom but if he was honest he had known that he probably wouldn’t end up going through with that plan anyway. Not only would Caroline have killed him if he had decided to skip it and probably dragged him along anyway but he knew that he would have missed out on being able to have some fun with her and with the rest of his friends as well so he knew that it wasn’t the kind of thing that he wanted to miss. His couple of run ins with the hunters lately had made him realise just how lucky he was to be able to live as close to a normal life as possible and still be who he was and he wanted to make the most of everything that life had to offer while he had the chance. There had already been two close calls lately and that was two too many for his liking. Caroline hadn’t had it easy either, she had been turned into a vampire by someone out of spite and yet she had decided that she wasn’t going to let that ruin something that she had been looking forward to for such a long time so he knew that he owed it to her so he was going for both of them. “Of course I do, I remember nearly everything you’ve told me,” Dec chuckled. He tried to at least especially when it came to things that were important to Caroline like prom was. “I know I’m no Tom Cruise but hopefully being seen with me tonight won’t be too bad,” he added, his tone light and teasing as he looked over at Caroline. The two of them being seen together wasn’t anything new considering that they often spent time together both when they were at school and when they were out and about in town but going to the prom together felt different but as far as Dec was concerned that definitely wasn’t a bad thing. Opening the door for Caroline, he closed the door behind her once she was out of the car and gave her hand a gentle squeeze as she took his arm. “That’s the Caroline I know,” he grinned, seeing the determination in her as they made their way inside. Looking around for a moment he couldn’t deny that he was impressed. “You did a great job, it looks incredible,” he admitted as he turned to face her. He had helped with some of the heavy lifting and decorating but that was nothing in comparison to everything that Caroline had done to make the evening what it was. As she mentioned dancing, he nodded. “Sure,” he said before taking Caroline’s hand in his and leading her out to where others were already dancing. He could already see some familiar faces among the crowd but the truth was that he only had eyes for one person and it wasn’t long before he came to a stop once they’d found a free spot and turned back to face her, placing both of his hands on her waist as they began to dance. ━ but you're a masterpiece. ━
"Oh my god, you remember?" Caroline asked in disbelief before a chuckle left the confinement of her lips. She could easily remember what she had been wearing that day and the words she had said to Declan. "Wow, it feels like it was yesterday but it's actually a few years back." Time moved fast for the young Forbes but for all she was concerned, it won't move again. She won't age again, she will remain this way for a long time ahead. Maybe it wasn't a bad thing, but it also wasn't a good thing. Her mom will age before her, all her neighbors will.. Elena and Bonnie will... It made an ugly feeling bloom in the pit of her stomach before a soft sigh left her lips. It was strange how Caroline could easily recall a lot of her conversations with Dec. Her best friend had been a part of her life for years now. He was always there when she needed him and she knew he was someone she could easily count on. Though there was a part of her that did not see them as just friends and she was afraid to admit that or let that part of her overwhelm her, afraid that she might ruin their friendship or wind up saying the wrong thing that might ruin everything.
"Oh, Dec, please. You're way hotter than Tom Cruise." Caroline complimented in a soft voice, her lips slowly forming a kind smile. She hated to be seen like this. With weakness shadowing over her and controlling her. She didn't want to be seen in such a way, so she had always concealed it but with Declan, she felt like she could let herself loose and show all different parts of herself without feeling any shame from it. "Thanks. I couldn't have done it without my heavylifting best friend." Caroline teased with a smile on her lips. Soon, they were among the dancing students, her hands soon came to rest on his shoulders, her lips stretching into a brief smile as she began to sway along with him, taking a moment to look around her for her best friends. "So, have you decided on what you wanna do after graduation? College wise?"
