It had never been a matter of reluctance on his part. From the moment he’d started ferrying the souls of those to be resurrected he’d been desperate to be down here. The war had been distant at that point, Lucifer still trapped in his cage, the day the Apocalypse literally came knocking at the door millennia off. Humanity had been growing though, slowly expanding beyond all that God had planned. They were developing quite their own personality, a world down here without the shackles of Heaven that he’d wanted to experience for himself. His role had been deemed too valuable though and so, Gabriel thought without rancour now, he’d had to sit there twiddling his thumbs until they’d all grown desperate.
Now the situation was beyond desperate of course. Their kind were an endangered species and with Lucifer free it was only a matter of time before their numbers started falling further. He couldn’t dwell on it of course, to catch yourself up in those ‘what ifs’ would only shackle you to the past and that was somewhere he absolutely didn’t want to be.
Remiel’s smile was almost rueful as he aimed it at Hannah. As the leader of Heaven she was doing her best to protect those of them that were left and watch out for humanity too. He shook his head, letting out a long breath. ”What is it they say? Charity begins at home? If we can’t protect the people here when this town’s about to become ground zero then what can we do.” Gabriel’s voice in his head suddenly went quiet. He was quite sure his host would be happy to steer clear of the battleground but as much as he did himself the journalist wanted to help this town. That altruistic streak was what had brought the two of them together in the first place. Blue eyes narrowed faintly as he looked around, then back at Hannah. ”My host is quite attached to this place too. His family’s roots run deep here.” Which made it all the more horrifying to see things likethis happen in Mystic Falls.
The archives at the newspaper were supposedly filled with stories like this one. Animal attacks, random violence covered up by the authorities here. Remiel frowned faintly, glancing back at the house as he slipped his hands into his pockets. ”It seems cyclic, we can only hope that peace will find the place again for a time.” With Hellspawn as thick on the ground as they were now there was little chance of that any time soon. They just had to clear up the town the best that they can, even if it meant shedding their own blood. He bobbed his head slowly. ”I’m sure between the two of us we can get to the bottom of this and find some justice for these people.” Hannah apparently knew the first step to take on that journey, the one small clue they’d found the first of the breadcrumbs. Rue touched Remiel’s face as he winged a brow. ”I’m glad you have a vehicle. I took the fast way this morning.” It had seemed prudent to get from Gabriel’s office to the scene as fast as possible when he’d heard the call over the office’s police radio earlier. The possibility of drawing attention to himself not seeming half as important to his host as pipping the Daily had been.

Deep down Hannah knew that there had always been a divide among her brothers and sisters. There were those who saw humanity as something worth protecting and there were others who agreed with Lucifer and felt that they were wasting their time watching over their father’s creations. Hannah didn’t agree with all of the orders that she’d been given in the past and as time went on she had started to question those orders and think for herself. There were always going to be those who obeyed without question but Hannah had stopped being one of those angels a long time ago. She had come to realise that free will existed even among angels and ever since she had taken over running Heaven she had been doing her best to do a better job than they’d been doing previously. They had lost so many of their brothers and sisters over the years and Hannah knew that there were still angels now who didn’t agree with the way that she was running things but she had the support of most and that was good enough for her. There were a few angels that she knew she could trust completely who were loyal to her and it was those angels that she relied on more than any others. Opening up about her family on Earth wasn’t something that she took lightly but there were a few who knew the real reason why she decided to split her time between Heaven and Earth and she knew that she wanted to keep it that way. It wasn’t lost on Hannah that if the wrong people found out about the kids she looked after then it would only put them in danger and that was the last thing she wanted. She had sworn to protect them and that vow was one that she took very seriously. It had been risky deciding to move them all to Mystic Falls but the kids had needed to have the chance to be around others like them and Hannah had known that the town had a habit of drawing the supernatural to it so she stood by her decision. “Exactly. There are a few other hotspots for the supernatural but this definitely seems to be the worst,” Hannah admitted. She had seen a few of the others but the truth was that they were nothing in comparison to Mystic Falls, even Beacon Hills and New Orleans didn’t come close. She still didn’t understand why so many seemed drawn to the town but it was something that she wanted to get to the bottom of. “Then it sounds like we both have a reason to stay,” she said, a smile forming on her face as she looked over at Remiel. He was one of the few that she knew she could trust completely and she had no trouble admitting that. “My vessel had a group of supernatural kids she looked after before she died and I brought them here so they could be around others like them,” she explained, knowing that she could trust Remiel with this. He had always been someone that she could count on and she knew that she could trust him not to say anything to anyone else. “I hope so, only time will tell,” she nodded. She wasn’t sure if they were going to be that lucky but that definitely didn’t mean that they couldn’t still hope for it. “We can both be too stubborn for our own good sometimes, I don’t know about you but I’m not going to give up until I find this creature,” she said, knowing that her words were true. That determination was something that become even stronger ever since she had taken Zoe’s body for her vessel and she knew that she would spend as much time as she had to hunting this creature to put a stop to it. “I find it helps to blend in around here,” Hannah admitted as she led the way over to the vehicle and climbed into the driver’s side, waiting for Remiel to join her before pulling the vehicle away from the kerb. New York had been bad. Dark alleyways and the seedy underbelly of the city seeming to leave the gates wide open for things to slaughter in droves. Bodies dropping like flies, blamed on general street violence, disease or substance abuse. Horrified Remiel had found himself wandering among them, coming across far too few that he could intervene with. Without it all he would not have found his host though, Gabriel West, putting his own life on the line against things he had no idea about. After he had accepted the offer he’d been made Remiel had known there was no way he could leave and abandon the journalist to all of that darkness. Now that Gabriel was here in Mystic Falls that feeling had only grown. There were things here that could cut his host down with a single bite, things that had crawled up from the depths of hell. Even if he could walk away from the others calling this place home there was no way that he could do that to the man that had allowed him to walk the earth in him for the last couple of years.
Remiel made a low sound of agreement in his throat as he looked back at Hannah. It seemed they were certainly in this battle together, the current Leader of Heaven not abandoning people as some of her predecessors had. ”Have you been to those other places?” he asked, a shudder rolling down his spine as he remembered New York. Things had certainly been growing exponentially worse since Metatron had cast them all out of Heaven. Blue eyes returned to Hannah as she mentioned the kids she had been looking after. ”You’re doing what she would have wanted? That’s admirable. My host … after what happened in New York, he wanted to return to his mother’s home and start showing people the truth about what’s happening here.” Instead of the thick veil of gossip and lies that had always ended up spread thick over a town that had been a supernatural hotspot for almost as long as it had existed, if what he had heard about the place was the truth.
If what he had already seen was anything to go by then there was plenty being hidden here. Remiel swallowed had as he took a look back at the house. Something nightmarish had happened there, something was to blame. He looked back at Hannah, determination on his face. ”Is there such a thing?” he asked in all seriousness. Huffing a breath out through his nose, Remiel nodded. ”I don’t plan to give up either. People were killed, something needs to be done to prevent another family from being lost in the same way.” Later his host would commit their names to the pages of the newspaper, memorialising them. He would feel better knowing that when he did something had received judgment for taking those lives. Drawing in a deep breath, Remiel slid into the car beside Hannah. ”That’s always been one of my problems … blending in. It gave my host quite a start when he began to put the pieces together. How did you handle it with yours?” Most it seemed, had left their hosts with full knowledge from the start but that had always seemed like a minefield to him, a risk that he would somehow allow Gabriel to come to harm with his mere presence.

Hannah hadn’t thought that things would end up this way, she hadn’t wanted to be the one to step up and lead the angels but it had become clear that so many of her brothers and sisters were only interested in fighting amongst themselves and those that weren’t had no interest in leading. Hannah had never seen herself as the leadership type, she had always been the kind of angel who did as she was told and followed orders but somewhere along the line she had started to think for herself and she had started to realise that she could start making her own decisions. It wasn’t always easy and she would be the first to admit that she had made some mistakes along the way but things were getting better and she knew that they would continue to do so as long as she had angels she trusted like Remiel by her side. She hadn’t known what had happened to him after the fall so it had come as a shock to learn that he was in Mystic Falls but she couldn’t deny that she was glad to see him. She had been drawn to the town and so had so many others it seemed. That could end up getting them into trouble with hunters but she was certain that the hunters in town had other things to focus on and angels weren’t exactly helpless so she knew that it would be fine. “Some. There are places where just one species has decided to take up residence but there are others where there is a wider variety. I’ve never come across this many species in one place though,” Hannah admitted. Mystic Falls was special and that was why she had decided to take the kids that she looked after there. They were all sensible kids and they knew how to keep what they were a secret from those around them so she knew that they wouldn’t go attracting the attention of any hunters and she truly was glad about that. “It took a while for the kids to come around but they needed me and I couldn’t abandon them,” Hannah explained. She knew that it was more than just Zoe’s plea that had made her look after them, her host’s feelings and memories had somehow become hers now and Hannah knew that she couldn’t walk away from them if she tried. As Remiel explained about his own host, a chuckle escaped her lips. “That’s dangerous. Does anyone believe him?” she asked, pretty sure that the answer was no considering how many people seemed to still be blissfully ignorant to what was going on around them. “Some might think so,” Hannah said, a smile touching her lips as Remiel asked if there was such a thing as being too stubborn. “Looks like we’re working together on this then,” she nodded. Hannah was fortunate in that she had all of Zoe’s training and her own to fall back on but she wasn’t sure whether Remiel had anything like that. Still, she trusted him to be able to look after himself. “I bet. Does he know everything now?” she asked, unable to deny that she was curious before a frown crossed her features as Remiel asked how she had dealt with it with her own host. “I didn’t. When I found Zoe she had been fatally wounded. She agreed to let me heal her body and use it as her vessel in exchange for me looking after the kids she had taken in. I tried to save her but it was too late, she made the deal willingly but I took over just as she passed away.” It wasn’t what she had wanted, she had wanted to give Zoe another chance at life but there was only so much that she could do. “It’s probably for the best, last time I took a vessel I completely uprooted her life. I took her from her home and her family, I swore I would never do that again.”GABRIEL WEST

It had been almost astounding to discover that most humans had no clue of what existed amongst them. In centuries past the church had tried to open their eyes at least far enough to make them watchful. Time had passed though and with God gone fewer and fewer had looked to him. Remiel had felt, had seen, their lack of faith when their time had come. Shock suddenly rippling through them as they’d realised that there was a world truly beyond their own. It had come to Gabriel in those final moments in the alleyway, the man’s faith almost entirely destroyed by the beasts who had almost killed the girl, suddenly restored by the appearance of the angel who had saved his life and struck a bargain with him that would leave his eyes wide open … once he had stopped erasing all that he had seen for his sake.
Remiel made a low noise as he glanced back in the direction of the house now forever tainted by the deaths that had occurred there today. This was not a town isolated and kept in a peaceful balance, it perhaps was no haven, but still they continued to live here. ”Perhaps that is it’s problem,” he said ominously. If it was they were all standing right in the middle of it, struggling to keep those around them alive just a little longer. It seemed that thanks to the children she had taken in, it was more than that for Hannah. A promise. Remiel rubbed a hand over his own chest, feeling something of his host’s emotions welling up there almost uncomfortably. The children would have been Gabriel West’s breaking point too. ”I’m sure your host would appreciate all that you’ve done for them. If you need anything … if they do …” The angel left the offer hanging there. Money meant little to their kind but it appeared that it was where most of his host’s altruism welled up from.
Some, especially those who had been unhappy with Gabriel’s purchase of the newspaper had whispered about such things. A rich fool just throwing his money around with no intention of doing what the newspaper or the town truly needed. Undoubtedly Gabriel had heard enough of it to prove them wrong at every turn … and get himself in trouble doing it. Remiel’s lips curved as he shook his head, a hint of wry humour in his expression. ”He’s no fool. He knows where to open up and so far it hasn’t been to anybody who might bring him harm.” Fear would do that to you. A little bubble of regret grew. Gabriel had seen enough to be careful now and even with this situation would keep his mouth shut. Remiel let his hand fall away from Hannah’s, knowing that both sides of their bargain would be kept.
That faint smile grew to full wattage, pride driving it as they began to investigate. There were regrets, he would admit to that but since he and Gabriel had struck their own bargain everything had become a matter of agreement. Remiel tilted his head, nodded. ”As much as I’ve been able to tell him. I won’t allow him to walk in blind again.” Most angels took far less regard for their hosts, not using them as brutally as demons, but not showing much regard for who they had been either. He watched Hannah with brows furrowed, seeing echoes of his own meeting with Gabriel in her story of Zoe. ”I was just in time with Gabriel. If I had been but a few minutes more the creatures he had tried to take on would have killed him and the girl he had tried to save.” Remiel’s frown deepened, the human mind inside of his squirming slightly. ”Is your first host still alive?” It seemed as though that was an answer Gabriel did not want to hear.

“Perhaps but different species can live in harmony, I’ve seen it,” Hannah shrugged. The kids she looked after were proof enough of that and she knew that there were others in town who only wanted to live their lives in peace too. There were always going to be those who wanted to embrace the side of themselves that enjoyed the thrill of the kill but thanks to Zoe, Hannah now saw it as her job to stop them. Everything had changed the moment she had taken control of Zoe’s body and somehow inherited all of her memories and instincts and Hannah knew that she wanted to do whatever she could in order to protect the town that she had decided to call home. She knew that she had other things to focus on as well, after all she was still running Heaven, but she had gathered some angels around her that she could trust and that she could delegate different things to and Remiel was another she knew that she could count on. “Thank you, I appreciate that,” she said sincerely as Remiel offered to help her and the kids. “You should come by and see them sometime, I think you’d like them,” she admitted. They had certainly helped her realise that people were worth taking the time to get to know and she had a feeling that they would get along well with Remiel. Hannah was working hard to support the family she had found herself a part of so she knew that she wouldn’t accept any money from Remiel but she knew that he could help in other ways. “That’s good. It sounds like he knows how to look out for himself and if he ever does find himself in trouble I’m sure you’ll help him,” she said, offering Remiel a smile. She could tell that he cared about his host and she didn’t doubt that he would step in if he needed to. As he said that he wouldn’t let Gabriel walk in blind again, Hannah nodded. “There was a time when I thought it was for the best that we kept as much of what we are and what we do a secret as we could but I think we were wrong about that,” she admitted. There were always going to be those who couldn’t be trusted but the same was true among the other angels as well and Hannah had learned that the hard way. She had put her faith in brothers and sisters she had thought that she could trust and they had ended up throwing it back in her face so she knew that there were times when it was important to find the right people to trust even if they were outside of their family if it could even still be called that these days. “He’s lucky you found him when you did but then again you always had pretty good timing,” she said, a smile touching her lips as she nudged his arm gently with her own. As he asked if her first host was still alive, Hannah nodded. “She is. I had control of her for too long so her husband came looking for her but now she’s back with him where she belongs,” she explained. “That’s why I was determined not to take another vessel, I didn’t want to uproot another life,” she added. “Zoe was different though, she needed my help but it was too late for her. In the end she gave me much more than I ever could have imagined though,” she said gently as she continued to drive. The family she had with the kids was one that she hadn’t expected but it was one that she knew she didn’t want to give up. “Have you come across many of our siblings during your time here?” she asked, unable to deny that she was curious. She had come across a few but she knew that there could easily be others. GABRIEL WEST

Not allowed in the trenches during the endless turmoil Heaven, Hell and humanity had gone through, Remiel had been forced to remain on the outside. Like a child with his nose pressed again the window of a store, he had only been able to watch. It meant he had no side to choose between Heaven and the humans, although he certainly drew the line at trying to understand the demons Hell spat out like foul little bullets. There had been peace at times, but no matter how often the world settled it always seemed to go back to that nightmare eventually. Humanity might have been his father’s greatest creation – the best of them – yet they still hungered for that same violence. Creature killed creature, human killed human, the bloody cycle went around and around, even without the guiding hand of Hell to steer them towards it.
Remiel looked dubiously at Hannah, his brows knotting as he frowned at her. In some ways he was still on the outside, looking in at a world he didn’t entirely understand, the rest of the time he tried to push his way to the heart of it, doing what he could to make sure that cycle was broken wherever possible. ”Perhaps,” he finally said lightly. If peace could be brought to just this town then perhaps there was more hope there than he believed. For all he knew, his help in this could be what would sway them from disaster. The frown melted away as Remiel worked his fingers over his chest, his lips curling faintly. ”Hopefully the feeling would be mutual. I will try and do so.” He nodded to his leader. So many of their kind cut off the ties their hosts had to their former lives but perhaps there was something to be said for allowing yourself to become a part of it all.
His deal with Gabriel had been late too arrive – too late, he was well aware of that – once it had come it had meant being able to immerse himself in the man’s world instead of merely zipping in and out of it when he required use of their body. Remiel’s chuckle was low, tailing off into a sigh. ”He does now, there was a … what do they call it? A learning curve?” And the sudden tailing off of it when he realised how much his presence rattled his host when it was hidden. Remiel made a small sound of agreement, a low rumble in his throat. ”There is a line but by not allowing them near it, we merely make it harder for ourselves.” It was like tying one arm up to handicap yourself in battle. They already had enough going against them with their dwindling numbers, they couldn’t afford to hobble themselves more.
Their kind weren’t supposed to be known for their pride but it shone through in Remiel’s expression now. He dipped his head towards Hannah with gratitude. ”It is a blessing. It seems as though yours has remained just as good.” She had been able to step in with her host’s ‘family’ after all. Angels weren’t known for their heart any more than their pride, but it was there and when the time had come Hannah had let her first host go, for the woman’s good. ”Sometimes it cannot be helped,” Remiel said in a low tone. ”For Zoe, you were a blessing. As she was one for you.” Sometimes it seemed the hand of God was still there, guiding them all in a wild and dangerous world. Blue eyes slid cautiously towards Hannah. He could trust her, he knew that, but he had also given his word to others. ”Some.. Many are continuing the fight still.” Gadreel certainly hadn’t been. There was no blame there after all his suffering. ”Have you?” He winged one brow at her. She was building an army after all.

There was a time when Hannah, like so many other angels, had believed that she and her siblings should keep their distance from those who lived on Earth. She had spent some time among them while everything was going on with Metatron but other than that she hadn’t really experienced the way a life on Earth could be lived. She had known that Castiel had enjoyed it and other angels had hidden themselves on Earth so they could live normal lives as well but Hannah had never seen the appeal. After taking Zoe’s body for her vessel everything had changed, though, and now she couldn’t imagine ever going back to the way things used to be. She knew that the work she and the others were doing in Heaven was important but they could do good on Earth too and that wasn’t something that she wanted to ignore. “I’m sure it will be, they’re a great group of kids,” she nodded. They had accepted her after she came into their lives and she had told them stories about some of the things that she and her siblings had done but the knew that they would like to hear from Remiel as well. “I can imagine,” Hannah admitted as Remiel said that there was a learning curve. “It’s easy to forget how much being our vessels can put them in danger. It’s all about finding balance,” she nodded. So many angels in the past had been careless with their vessels, not caring if they got hurt or what damage they caused to their lives. Hannah had done the same when she had taken her last vessel, Caroline, away from her husband but after seeing how much she had hurt the woman she had promised herself that she was never going to do that again. “We do. If what happened with Metatron taught me anything it’s that we can’t do this on our own any longer. Our father is gone but we still need allies if we’re going to keep the lights on in Heaven and be there for those on Earth.” Some might not like angels having more involvement on Earth but now it felt like something that they needed to do. “I like to think so and I hope the kids do as well,” Hannah admitted, a small smile touching her lips as she looked over at Remiel. She had arrived back at the house just in time to stop the kids being killed and from that moment on she had sworn that she would always honour the promise that she had made Zoe when they had made their deal. “You’re right, it can’t always be helped but I think the less damage we cause in the lives of others, the better,” she shrugged. “I wasn’t able to save Zoe but I can make sure her kids are okay. It’s strange, I’ve never been influenced by a vessel that much but it’s like when she died she passed on her instincts and training to me,” Hannah admitted. She had never been much of a fighter before that but now the skills she had inherited served her well. As Gabriel spoke again, Hannah nodded. “As long as they’re okay, that’s all that matters,” she nodded. “For too long we’ve been told we have to do things a certain way or we’ll be killed. It’s time every angel starts making their own decisions about what’s right for them, I just hope some will continue to help.” She knew that she wasn’t going to force anyone into helping the way Metatron had because that wouldn’t make her any better than him. They all had to make their own decisions and she knew that she would respect those as long as they meant that no one got hurt. “I’ve come across a few. Some preferred to go back to Heaven where they feel safe but others preferred to stay here and help on the ground.”GABRIEL WEST

Kids had flitted across Gabriel West’s mind a time or two, not an alien concept to his host the same way they were to him. Still, they were some nebulous some time in the future thoughts, when the right woman came along. The angel had been faintly bemused, it seemed as though there had been plenty of women in the past. Faces cropping up in his memories for a few days or weeks at a time, before they drifted away. If he was waiting for one to stick to have a family, even in the way Hannah’s host had, he would be waiting for some time. Until then they were just momentary considerations that didn’t carry an ounce of the weight they would when he was raising them himself. Remiel’s smile brightened, holding a little more promise for Hannah’s future with the kids she’d taken on as her own. In Mystic Falls that sort of promise didn’t always survive. Like clouds shredded by the sun, dangers too big for them to deal with swallowing up those they tried to protect. Remiel knew that Hannah hoped to prevent such things by having angels on the ground here, but after the fall there were too few of them left, their people stretched too far. Finding a balance with Gabriel with all of that going on had been difficult and his host had taken some knocks before they’d been able to figure it out. ”It was a bad balance for quite some time,”] Remiel admitted in a low voice. ”He reminds me now.” Begging at times for a breather from what was going on. Gabriel West was a man who wanted ot make the world a better place, but at the same time he was very much still human. The angel winged a brow at his boss. ”And you have allies here? Other than our own kind?” His host had his people at the newspaper, but none he would’ve believed could help. There had been the vampire though…
Hannah’s network seemed tighter, her host’s family considered hers now, Hannah’s presence in their lives making a difference. Remiel sighed as she shifted into almost warning him about the damage they could cause in the lives of others. It had never been his intention to hurt Gabriel, what had happened was out of carelessness rather than any aim to see him harmed. ”Perhaps if my host were closer to his family, it would be more reason for caution. Here there are but a handful of people who might even notice my presence in him.” Remiel’s smile turned thoughtful. How much of his host had ended up passed on to him and vice versa? Gabriel certainly knew more about what was out there in the town thanks to their connection. From the fear that welled up in him that wasn’t always something that was appreciated. ”If it’s all a matter of choice for them, how many will choose not to fight?” Remiel asked, his voice strained. He shifted in his seat, watching the town slipping past beyond the car window. ”I believe there’s something to be said for free will, but we need someone leading us, encouraging us to fight to protect what we do have left.” His gaze was squarely on Hannah as he said it. She seemed to have volunteered for that position – better her than him. ”What are your plans with them? I feel as though we need some sort of structure to what we’re trying to do here … more than just following up small leads.” What had happened at the house rushed back in on a dark wave through him, swallowing his smile again. There were still things they could do that weren’t on that cosmic scale.

Hannah knew that there were plenty of angels who didn’t agree with the way she was running things, they liked the old way but if there was one thing she had realised it was that they couldn’t stay stuck in the past forever. Angels had been around for a long time and some of them still held old fashioned views but Hannah had learned to think outside the box and she honestly hoped that in time others would too. They had lost so many angels during the fall and Hannah knew that she really didn’t want to lose anyone else. That was why she wasn’t trying to strong arm anyone into doing things her way, she knew that she needed to give them time to figure out what they wanted to do. Right now she was just trying to figure out who had survived and who hadn’t so she could try and get as many of them working together as possible. It wasn’t always easy given that she had a life of her own now as well but she was doing her best and she knew that she couldn’t do any more than that. “That’s not such a bad thing, I wish Zoe could remind me sometimes,” Hannah admitted. She had felt a connection to the woman and that was what had made her want to try and save her. It had been too late for Zoe but there were still times when Hannah found herself thinking about what it might be like if she had the woman to share all of this with. She had made a mistake with Caroline, she had taken control of the woman’s body and had completely ignored what she had wanted. Hannah knew that she wasn’t going to make that same mistake again and that was why she hadn’t wanted to take another vessel but this time it had worked out in the end even if it wasn’t quite how she had expected. “A couple but not as many as I would like yet. It’s difficult knowing who to trust with what I am, let alone my position,” she admitted. It was a challenge, that was for sure. “He might surprise you yet. Learning about all of this could make him rethink his life,” Hannah shrugged. It sounded like a lonely one from what Remiel had just said but she knew that only time would tell. As he asked how many would choose not to fight, Hannah’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Some probably will. I’ve come across a few who don’t want to have anything more to do with us or Heaven and while we do need people who will fight, it has to be for the right reasons. If we try forcing them to fight then it will only do more harm than good.” That was what had happened in the past, angels hadn’t liked being told what to do and while a lot of them were trained to be soldiers, trying to force them to do something wasn’t a good idea. “That’s what I’m trying to do. We need as many fighting as possible and so far I’ve encouraged quite a few to join our ranks. In time hopefully word will spread and those who decided against it will reconsider.” Things were being done differently this time, Hannah had a few angels around her that she could trust and she was relying on them as much as she could. “I’ve been splitting them into groups. Those in Heaven can easily handle everything there while we keep an eye on things here. Some are looking into the Dread Doctors, some are looking into why this town is a drawing so many supernatural to it, some are looking for Lucifer and others are coming up with ways to keep those in town safe. It’s a lot of ground to cover but so far a lot of the reports have been promising.”GABRIEL WEST

Undoubtedly some would have preferred a host that was incapable of talking back- the demons certainly did. There was no one to argue your poor choices then, no conscience prickling hard enough to have you hesitating at the wrong moment. Also, no guidance when you could use a human view point on things. There was a cost to being just like the things they were supposed to be protecting humanity from and it was one that he wasn’t willing to pay, personally. Over the years that he had been sharing this body with Gabriel, Remiel had found himself appreciating most of the human’s insights, although there were still those moments when the admonishments ending up a stinging reminder. Hannah would probably have agreed that such a thing was best avoided.
Remiel hummed sympathetically at her. There were some souls that were returned to their bodies, but the fact that Hannah hadn’t brought Zoe back already likely meant that she wished to leave the woman to her eternal peace. Her position in charge of Heaven wasn’t an easy one, it painted a target on your back. He wouldn’t have wanted the responsibility of it. ”They’ll come with time,” he assured her. ”There are plenty here who seem to have some clue of what’s happening.” That didn’t mean that they would necessarily be on Heaven’s side though. Hunters had been known to take their own shots at angels, even if it ended badly for them most of the time.
There wasn’t a single soul in town – barring his brothers and sisters and the vampire – who was aware that he was merely a hitchhiker in the owner of one of the local newspapers. His own family had remained in the dark, which was probably a blessing for them. There were some who wouldn’t hesitate to get to him through them. ”Hmm,” Remiel grunted. ”Perhaps. It’s food for thought.” For those moments when there were less pressing things on their minds. For now the war was still too close to them all and that had to have some of their kind anxious. ”Can you blame them? You’re right, we can’t use force. They have to come to this willingly or we’ll end up back where we were.” The fight was coming and he suspected those who chose to ignore it were only prolonging the trouble.
In time they would discover whether or not Hannah’s methods were going to work for them. Perhaps they were being spread too thin with these human problems, but turning a blind eye to them had cost them before and as she had said, she was doing things differently this time around. Remiel turned in his seat, searching her expression with a small smile playing over his lips. ”It sounds as though your plans are fruitful. The sooner we deal with some of those problems, the sooner we can focus on the others. Just what did you have in mind for me?” Other than the investigation today, of course. He wasn’t one of those who’d revolt at being given orders he didn’t like the sound of, but the right orders could make this all far more satisfying for him.

Hannah had asked Zoe to become her vessel as she had wanted to try and heal the woman so she could get back to her family. She had sworn that she would never take another vessel after what happened with Caroline and she had kept that promise but Zoe had agreed and Hannah had been unable to save her anyway. She had already slipped away by the time Hannah took control of her body and there wasn’t anything that she had been able to do about it. She knew that she could have pulled Zoe out of Heaven and returned her to Earth but while she had let others do that on occasion, Hannah knew that she would never do it herself. She had checked in on Zoe and the woman had assured her that she was happy and had asked Hannah to take care of the kids she had taken in so Hannah was doing her best to do just that. “I hope you’re right,” Hannah nodded as Remiel said that knowing who to trust would come with time. “I’ve taken up a job at the Grill and I know at least half the staff there are supernatural but even then it’s difficult to know how many people know we actually exist and who would try and exploit it,” she shrugged. It was something that she hated but she knew she just had to hope that Remiel was right and that she would figure it out eventually. “That’s probably a good thing, with everything that’s going on here those who don’t know the truth need people looking out for them,” she admitted. There always seemed to be something going on in Mystic Falls and Hannah knew that there were plenty of hunters and others in town who were trying to help out but Hannah knew that it was about time that she and the other angels did the same as well. She knew that not all of her brothers and sisters agreed but as far as she was concerned they had distanced themselves from humanity for far too long. “No, I can’t blame them. Metatron was a dictator and he killed anyone who stood in his way. Some might think me weak but I refuse to lead like that. Free will is something that those on Earth have always had and it’s about time that we have it too,” Hannah shrugged. She knew that it had never been that way for them, their father and the archangels had always been there in the past telling them all what to do but now it was different. Now they were all gone and Hannah knew that she and her brothers and sisters needed to find their own way. She wasn’t going to try and force anyone into doing something they didn’t want to do but she hoped that in time those who didn’t want anything to do with them would eventually see the light. “Exactly,” she agreed as Remiel spoke again. As he asked what she had in mind for him, Hannah’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “That depends on you, where do you think you’d be of most use?” she asked, knowing that that would be the best place to start. She wanted Remiel’s help but she also wanted him to be happy in what he was doing so she wasn’t going to make him do something he didn’t want to do. “You’ve always been someone I trust so I’d like to have you as one of my lieutenants overseeing things if you’re interested.”GABRIEL WEST

There had been a fair amount of supernaturals in New York, but Gabriel’s first time of them there had been when he’d stumbled across the vampires feeding in the alleyway. If he had chosen to stay there it might have been decades more before he had stumbled over something like that again by himself. Gabriel had moved home though, bypassing the relative safety of the family estate to head to Mystic Falls. It was almost a wonder that it had taken him as long as it had to start to work out what was happening here. You could sneeze and be guaranteed to hit something here. From what Gabriel’s research had shown – even before he’d been aware of the angel in his mind – there were supernatural roots going back here more than a thousand years. There would have been some here then with no awareness of the things that they were living beside. Now was little different, but people seemed far less ready to believe in the unknown now. Perhaps in a way that protected them from what they might have dug too far into, but, in his opinion, Remiel thought that there was something to people being allowed to see exactly what they were up against.
His blue eyes narrowed faintly at the idea of just who might have been working for the newspaper. He could have sensed most, but there had been enough other threats in this town that he hadn’t started to pick through those who weren’t causing trouble here. ”It’s the ones who know but are silent about the whole thing that you have to watch,” Remiel said lightly. You could see exactly what was going on with the ones who were noisy and up front, but silence tended to allow secrets to fester and evil to take root. He shifted slightly in his seat, the lines carving deeper into his brow for a moment. Gabriel would’ve called such thoughts cynical, but he’d had millennia of practice with all of this – it wasn’t cynical when you’d had such experience. The angel’s smile touched one corner of his mouth. ”I guess they’re lucky we’re protecting this town then.” Their forces stretched thin, but holding on all the same. Their kind weren’t like so many others, you couldn’t just birth a new angel through a bite or by lineage alone – procreating with humans was forbidden, but even then the offspring wasn’t the same.
Gathering their people together here might not be easy, but under Hannah they had more of a chance than they would have done with Metatron still trying to control things. ”In time they will see,” Remiel assured her, dragging his gaze away from the road. ”They have known nothing but an iron fist for so long, those memories take time to deal with.” Some might never come around at all, but his host had assured him that most might. They just needed patience – something that had always been in short supply, despite the reputation that angels had here on earth. His own among his kind might not have been perfect, but Remiel knew there was a chance he could talk others around to their side – he had already tried with some, albeit with various degrees of success. ”Here,” Remiel said tightly as they approached the address they had found. ”On the ground if they way I have been from the start.” He nodded at Hannah, already reaching for the door as he beamed a smile at her. ”I like the sound of that. You have a lieutenant in me then. Let’s go … boss.” Using the same word Gabriel’s people occasionally did for him, Remiel nodded at Hannah, and when she was ready, he led the way inside, hopefully to find out what had truly happened to the family in that house.
