Things in Mystic Falls were back to normal … well … as back to normal as a town stack full of supernatural creatures ever managed to be. There wasn’t too high a volume of blood being shed around town, people were still going missing, the occasional body was still turning up but Klaus Mikaelson hadn’t arrived back in town and started wholesale slaughtering again. He hadn’t made a play to get Stefan back by his side with another little nibble and the Original hybrid’s witches hadn’t yet started snatching people off the streets. It was a relief in a way, especially since for the first time in town Damon had found himself with more than just a tenuous relationship with his little brother to lose. Claire, who had finally shoe-horned her way into his heart when Katherine had left the way open, Elena, who was insisting on seeing what going on between the two of them as some sort of friendship, Stefan, who really had become his brother again … and the whole judgy little gang, who, despite their narrow minds and insistence that he was practically the devil incarnate, he felt some niggling little need inside to watch out for. Donovan had already proven just what happened when they were let out alone. Matt’s disappearance wasn’t just a little mystery for the Scooby Gang to solve. It was downright disturbing in a way. Normal things might’ve been but there was still trouble and mischief out there and sooner rather than later it would come to find them all again. This time he’d was planning on being more prepared than ever.
Sat at the bar of the Grill Damon studied the faces in the mirror in front of him. Its slightly warped reflection revealed families with younger kids arriving for early dinners, high school kids clustering around the pool tables in the back for a little after school entertainment without their parents around. Too early for Ric to be staggering in here to drink off the day dealing with all those giggling, mindless teenagers or to have dinner with the family, thinking of Ric as a dad was still a total kicker, too early for Claire to be off of work. Just the right time for Donovan to appear for his shift. Damon’s lips half curved as he saw Matt slip in through the front door and head for the area behind the bar. Clea turned, glanced at Matt before she turned back and started towards him with a top up for his glass. ”Alone tonight?” she asked, grinning at him. She’d been behind the bar almost every night since she’d moved here, not allowing him to take too many liberties, raising a few eyebrows when she’d spent whole afternoons at the back of the Grill, taking over whole tables with her books. Damon grinned back, blue eyes narrowing and suddenly drifting over her shoulder, back at that mirror as the door swung open and his brother walked through. ”Not anymore,” he drawled. ”Get Stefan whatever his usual is, please.” A lesson in etiquette three weeks ago had him keeping his manners with her. She headed off down the bar to pour, leaving him to swivel around on his seat and aim a slanted grin at his brother. ”And how was school today?” he asked. ”I ordered you … a something …” Not sure what he actually had ordered, Damon swivelled back, smacking a hand on top of the stool beside to encourage Stefan to take a perch.

Stefan had come to terms with the fact that there were a lot of things that he wasn’t going to be able to do after he became a vampire. It wasn’t something that he had ever asked for but Katherine had compelled him to drink her blood anyway and he in turn had forced Damon to complete the transition so that he wouldn’t be alone in his life as a vampire. It was a vicious cycle and it was one that he had regretted since then given that it had meant that he had lost his brother. Having children and growing old with the woman he loved wasn’t something that would be possible for Stefan now but as it turned out the first part, at least, had already come true. The day before he had been attacked by a hunter that had mistaken him for someone else and it had resulted in him almost getting killed but he had been saved just in time by two people who claimed to be his children. Stefan would have refused to believe them if he hadn’t seen certain similarities between the twins and himself and Valerie and he knew that they wouldn’t have anything to gain from lying to him about their true paternity. He didn’t have anything to really offer the two of them and from what they had told him they weren’t after anything, they just wanted to get to know him and that was something that he could definitely agree to. He had always liked the idea of having a family of his own one day when he was younger and he had thought that that chance had been ripped away from him the day he became a vampire but now he seemingly had a second chance and he knew that he wanted to take it. He knew that sooner or later he was going to have to get some proof that it was true but for now he was still trying to get his head around it. Focusing on school hadn’t been easy after that and needless to say he was glad when his last class of the day came to an end and he was able to get out of there. The end of term was fast approaching and one by one his classes were coming to an end so he knew that he just had to hang in there a little longer. He still wasn’t sure what he was going to do after graduation but either way he knew that he still had time to figure it out. For now he had other things to think about and he soon found himself heading for the Grill where he was pretty sure that his brother would already be drinking away the afternoon. Sure enough his gaze came to rest on Damon pretty much straight away and he made his way to the bar. He hadn’t seen his brother the day before, Damon had been out with Claire when Jacob and Lucy had managed to get him home and Stefan knew that that was probably a good thing. His brother would have no doubt demanded answers as to who they were and those were answers that Stefan hadn’t felt ready to give him straight away. The time apart also meant that his body had had the time that it needed to heal and get the vervain out of his system and for that he was grateful. “Tedious,” Stefan admitted as Damon asked how school was before taking a seat next to his brother. “I’m surprised Ric didn’t slip out early to join you,” he admitted before offering Clea a smile and thanking her as she returned with his drink. Turning his attention back to his brother, he raised his glass. “Thanks for this,” he said before taking a sip. “How did things go with Claire?”DAMON SALVATORE

They’d fallen into a pattern. Over the last few months as things had settled down and another threat had refused to raise it’s head much about the parapet, routine had become king in Mystic Falls. Now, some of that routine he really wouldn’t argue about … the nights spent with Claire, at the Boarding House that was absolutely living up to its name now, at her far more peaceful apartment. He checked in with those he’d come to tolerate, if not entirely appreciate in town, paying his little visits, living up to the title of Decent Damon in a way that most wouldn’t have suspected he could when he’d first strolled back into town to get Katherine out of the tomb. It was a total one eighty from where he’d been, from the guy he’d been when boredom and a desire to make Stefan pay had driven him to turn Vicki, hand Lexi over to the town council and when he’d barely felt an ounce of guilt over pushing Bonnie’s grandmother to drain herself dry to crack that tomb over. This Damon was best friends with the husband of a woman he’d turned at her instigation, a husband who’d once wanted to kill him, this Damon might still have been spending his afternoons drinking at the Grill but not in the way he’d once done. This wasn’t brooding day drinking, the alcohol just a crutch for his stinging pride, a push towards a night of literally painting the town red, this was waiting for company that he knew was going to come before spending a pleasant evening back at the Boarding House waiting for Claire’s shift to end.
Now maybe he hadn’t entirely expected that company to be his brother, not while Elena was out there waiting somewhere for him but this would absolutely do. As Clea had teased over him being alone Stefan had strolled in the door. Damon shot a grin back at her, a hint of wolfishness in it as he put in Stefan’s order for him. With that settled, he turned, greeting Stefan in the way that usually had eyes rolling. They hadn’t seen each other in probably 48 hours but that didn’t matter these days, they fell back into their routine fast enough. There was a snort as Stefan’s admission revealed just how much his brother was enjoying high school these days. ”Counting down the days til graduation already?” he asked, looking thoughtful for a moment. ”How many is that now? Eight, nine?” At the question of Ric slipping out to join him Damon blew out a dismissive sound, waving his hand. ”If he did get out early I’d put money on it happening so he can get in a little time with Jenna.” Studying his brother in the mirror his dark brows waggled at the idea. He might’ve been ignorant sometimes but he wasn’t blind. Damon waited, aiming a wink at the bartender before he picked up his own drink. The smile that curved above it was positively wolfish this time. ”Fantastically. As always,” he promised. ”Why did you ever let me wait so long?” Brows drawing together he mock glared at his brother, thumping a fist against his arm as he studied Stefan’s face.

Stefan was looking forward to the days where his free time was his own to do with what he wanted but at the moment he still had a bit more time left at school to get through. He had already made up his mind that he was going to join Elena and the others in heading to college in a few months so he wasn’t going to be done with school altogether but he was at least looking forward to not having to worry about going to class for a while. For the most part Stefan enjoyed school, it was something that kept him occupied even if most of what they were taught in some of the classes were things that he had learned a long time ago and repeatedly since then but it wasn’t the chance of going back and doing high school all over again that had appealed to Stefan when he first arrived in Mystic Falls, it had been the chance to get to know Elena. To begin with he had been intrigued about how she looked so much like Katherine but he had quickly realised that Elena was nothing like the other woman and he had fallen in love with her. He knew that it might not necessarily make sense to some but to him it did – he had found the person that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Of course the rest of Elena’s life was going to be short in comparison given that she was human but Stefan had accepted that and he knew that this was what he wanted regardless. He still wasn’t sure how she felt about the fact that there were now two people in town who looked older than he did and claimed to be his children but he believed them and he knew that it was about time that he told Damon and found out what he thought. Stefan knew that he needed to ask Bonnie or Henrik to use their magic to determine whether he was actually related to Lucy and Jacob but right now he was still trying to get his head around the possibility. Right now he knew that he needed to go and meet Damon and it didn’t take him long to reach the Grill. They could have talked at home but the house was so full these days that it wasn’t always easy to get any privacy while they were there. Stefan enjoyed having so many people around though, it was what the Boarding House was built for and if he was honest it made it feel more like home. He and Damon hadn’t been brought up there as the Boarding House was built after the Veritas Estate was destroyed but it had been home to their family for generations since then and even though there weren’t any human members of the family left it still felt right to keep it in the family. Taking a seat, Stefan shook his head as Damon asked if he had eight or nine days left at school. “I wish. They’ve extended the term due to all of the upheaval so now there is quite a while before finals,” he explained. He didn’t really mind too much but in all honesty it was getting a little tedious now so he was looking forward to being able to graduate with Elena and their friends. Thanking Clea as she returned with his drink, Stefan took a sip and nodded as Damon said that Ric would be spending time with Jenna if he was able to get away early. “That would make sense. They seem really happy.” Stefan in turn was happy for them, he knew that things hadn’t been easy for either of them and now with Kyle and Abby in town things were even more complicated but they were making it work. “Don’t tell me you wanted to meet me here because you’re missing your drinking buddy,” he teased, his expression playful as he looked over at his brother. As Damon spoke again before thumping his arm, Stefan thumped his arm in return. “You wouldn’t have listened to me if I’d tried telling you to go for it with her,” Stefan reminded him. Damon had still wanted to make him pay for making him complete the transition back then, in fact Stefan was pretty sure that Damon still hated him for it, but things were better between them now anyway and for that he was grateful. Maybe his wasting his life away in bars had been a self-fulfilling prophecy in the end. From the moment his second son, his golden boy had been born Giuseppe had made it clear that he doubted his eldest would ever amount to anything. A disappointment, a waste, a man who would squander what he had been given and roll over in an early grave, steeped in liquor and poor judgment. Oh, Giuseppe had never hesitated to throw every nasty scenario at him. It had been why he’d gone to war, Damon thought, and in the end it had been why he’d come home, why he’d allowed Katherine to tangle him around her little finger. He’d wanted to prove Giuseppe wrong. Maybe if Giuseppe saw him now, swirling liquor in a glass, waiting for Stefan to come join him, he’d have said it had all come true. Bull to that though. The only one who’d put him near a grave was Giuseppe himself and thanks to Katherine he’d failed miserably. Go around two, Klaus biting him, it had been close again but no dice. The two people he had to thank for that were the ones who saw past the surface that Giuseppe had spent years hammering into shape. Stefan had sacrificed himself to Klaus, and Claire … Claire had stuck by him in those dark hours when he’d been so sure he was going to end up spending an eternity burning with good old Giuseppe. Saved from that the world was technically his oyster but while Claire worked, he was right back here, warming his seat and watching the clock on Stefan. That was one finger up to Giuseppe he supposed.
Damon had ordered a drink for his brother the minute he’d arrived at the door of the Grill. Snorting over his own as Stefan had called school tedious. At this point in his own life the thought of sitting through class after class to learn what he’d known from the real world for decades was mind numbing to say the least. Employed he might not’ve been but being a man of leisure suited him just fine and meant he was his own man instead of trapped at the whims of a principal. Letting out a low whistle as one of those whims was made clear, Damon shook his head. ”You’ll be three hundred before they let you graduate,” he whispered, feigning shock. ”You’d think they’d just want to get it over and done with for the year. Shut it all down, hope the upheaval stops during the summer.” The town had a tendency to bury their heads in the sand over most things, just not over all that had happened to their high school students it seemed. Ric probably wasn’t much happier at a longer semester than any of the students were. Damon smiled wryly as he tilted his glass back and forth in his hand. ”Ridiculously happy. They both deserve it, the kids too. Lots of big happy families going on.” In a town where misery seemed pretty rife it did feel good, even to his supposedly wizened heart. Sucking in a deep breath to sigh out, Damon settled a hand over his heart and then smirked. ”Maybe,” he crooned in promise. ”We’ve both got other distractions now.” Claire was his, he thought, almost blaming his brother for the delay with that as he thumped him on the arm. ”If you’d told me not to go for it with her I might’ve done. You know I’m always out to prove people wrong. How do you think I managed to hook her in the first place?” It had been with the mental image of her on that stage that cut through all the flirtatiousness that most saw as bull. He’d cut right through it to the feelings that had taken root in his black little heart.

Damon had hated him for over a hundred years and the truth was that Stefan couldn’t blame him. He had made his brother complete the transition so that he wouldn’t be alone but he had ended up that way for a long time anyway. Stefan had started to think that Damon would never forgive him for what had happened but a near death experience had changed all of that. Now things were better between the two of them than they had been for a long time and Stefan finally felt like he had his brother back. There always seemed to be so much going on in Mystic Falls but one thing Stefan had come to realise was that he could always count on Damon to get involved when he needed him. Damon’s methods weren’t always the best but his heart was in the right place and Stefan hoped that now with Claire’s influence as well he would start thinking things through a little more. Damon had always been impulsive and reckless but after everything that had happened Stefan hoped that his brother would be a little less so. Damon hadn’t wanted him to make a deal with Klaus in order to save him but Stefan had known that there was no way that he was ever going to do anything else. Even though Damon had seemed to hate him he had known that he would never be able to forgive himself if anything happened to his brother so Stefan was glad that he didn’t need to worry about that. Klaus’ blood had saved Damon and it had given them the chance to finally make things right so with any luck that would continue. They saw each other often but so far Stefan had been trying to get his head around the fact that he had two kids he had never known about, something that Henrik had confirmed for him, and he hadn’t wanted to tell Damon until he knew for sure but now he knew that he was going to have to and he wasn’t too sure how Damon was going to react. First Stefan knew that he wanted to have a drink, though, and if he was honest he was glad to think about something else for a little while as Damon started talking about graduation. “You’re telling me,” Stefan chuckled as Damon said that he would be three hundred by the time he graduated. “I get why they’re doing it but I’m not sure that dragging it out is going to make much of a difference,” he admitted. It would give them the chance to cover the things that they hadn’t managed to get to yet but there was always the chance that there might be more disruption along the way and the end of the term couldn’t be put off indefinitely with so many of them due to start college in just a few months. “They do,” Stefan agreed, knowing that Damon was right when he said that they all deserved it. They had been through so much so he was glad that things were working out for them. Taking a deep breath, Stefan knew that it was now or never and he let out the breath before speaking again. “Speaking of families, there’s something I need to tell you,” Stefan began, rubbing the back of his neck nervously as he lifted his glass to his lips and took a sip. “Back when we were human I met someone the year before Katherine arrived. Valerie and I planned to run away together but she never showed up. It turns out she was pregnant but for some reason she wasn’t able to raise them,” he explained, hoping that he was making at least some sense. “I have two kids who are now here in town and before you say anything, Henrik already confirmed it,” he finished, not sure in the least how Damon was going to react. “Well, I’m happy to fill in,” he said, a smile working its way across his face as he looked over at his brother. Rubbing his arm playfully as Damon hit it, Stefan couldn’t help but laugh as his brother spoke again. “Maybe so but then you would have kept wondering if you were only with her because you thought it was the opposite of what I wanted and you both deserved better than that,” he shrugged. If something was going to happen between Damon and Claire then he had always hoped that it would be for the right reasons. “You’re proving a lot of people wrong at the moment.”DAMON SALVATORE

Coming back to Mystic Falls had felt like a mistake after it had been revealed that Katherine had never been in the tomb. A cost high enough for him to feel it, despite his thick veneer of not wanting to – one shattered heart, one dead grandmother. It had been easy to run out of town after that with his tail between his legs. Damon knew it would’ve set tongues wagging, those that hated him accusing him of running away from it all. Maybe he had a little, his heart had definitely been aching enough that he’d wanted to retreat. If he’d been all that bad there was no way he would’ve come back when he’d heard Elena was in trouble. Over the years he might’ve encouraged people to think he was heartless, he might’ve let every ounce of pain and grief to spill out onto others but that wasn’t all he was. In that time out of town Damon had realized that Katherine had pushed him to that all along. He’d done things for that woman he never would’ve thought of before he’d met her. There wasn’t going to be much that could make up for all of that but some part of him wanted to try anyway. There hadn’t been time to entirely set things right with Stefan before Klaus had gone twisting Stefan’s arm up with that bite but when it had looked as though the bite was going to kill him and Stefan had gotten there just in time the forgiveness had been given out loud. About time too, although Niklaus had to go spoiling any other sort of heart to heart between them by dragging Stefan off to New Orleans. It looked like whatever Klaus had been doing there hadn’t worked out and the two of them had made it home … to all the smaller problems, the ones that felt weirdly human.
Like graduation. It had almost been no wonder that everything had been pushed back by a few weeks considering what had gone on with Klaus’ little ritual and everything else but much longer and the seniors were going to be graduating the same day they were starting college. Damon clucked his tongue and chuckled. ”I guess they’ve still got a little more to try and cram in your brains, as though they’re capable of soaking anything more up right now.” Considering his brother had been through it all before it even more ridiculous for him. For the others though, this was the first time around and this was gonna be a big leap. A hundred and fifty years and he’d never been tempted to do it himself. That was one of the differences between him and Stefan, he’d never had the yearning to do all those messy little human things that Giuseppe would’ve praised them for. That had always been him all over though, shrugging off his father’s preferences. As a father Giuseppe had sucked, that was only more obvious watching people who deserved it, who tried to do it right no matter how hard it was, like Ric. It might’ve meant not having him alongside him at the bar as much as he once had but the pay off was worth it. Damon shifted in his seat, winging his brow as Stefan said he had something to tell him. He lifted his glass, sipping from it slowly, then almost spitting his mouthful of bourbon across the bar. He gestured with the glass, then thumped it down on the table. ”You have two kids in town … kids like …” he gestured back and forth between them. Kids who’d been alive over a century had to be something. Damon huffed out a breath. ”Uncle Damon, it’s got kind of a ring to it.” Shaking his head, he let out a huff of laughter. ”Well, at least you know I’m not gonna come out with a story just like that.” Damon’s smile softened a little as he looked down into his glass. ”Everybody except Claire. She always saw beneath the bull.” She hadn’t hesitated in letting him know it either.

Ever since he’d returned to Mystic Falls Stefan had grown used to things not going his way. There always seemed to be something going on that seemed to work against him and the others but no matter what life seemed to throw their way they always managed to find a way through it together. Right now they had the threat of Klaus wanting to create hybrids hanging over their heads but there was so much more going on in town as well and Stefan had a feeling that that was never going to change. Things had definitely changed from the way they were when he and Damon were growing up in Mystic Falls, back then the only thing that any of them had had to worry about was vampires making the town their home but now there was so much more than that. It had taken Stefan a while to get his head around it all and if he was honest there were still times now when certain things happened to surprise him but now he liked to think that he was much better at expecting the unexpected. It would have been easier to get as far away from Mystic Falls as possible but the town was his home and it was the only place that had ever felt that way to him so he knew that he wasn’t going to give up on it now. For the first time in years he had so many people in one place that he cared about and he knew that he didn’t want to go back to the way things were before he returned to town. Back then he had spent all of his time on his own because he had thought that it was safer for those around him. He hadn’t truly been living his life but this time around he was even if as far as everyone around him was concerned he was still in high school with Elena and the others. Now there wasn’t long left before they were due to graduate if the powers that be at the school didn’t decide to push the end of the term back more than they already had done, though, and sooner enough they would all be able to start the next chapter. For Stefan that was starting to look like a few years at Whitmore College with everyone else and even though he knew that it wouldn’t even come close to being the same as the Ivy League schools that he had been to in the past there was something to be said for going to a smaller college and it meant that he would get to stay close to the people he cared about so the truth was that he wasn’t worried one bit. “With every day that goes by the others seem to focus less and less so I’m hoping they’ll put us all out of our misery soon enough,” Stefan said, a small smile working its way across his face as he lifted his glass to his lips and took a sip. It didn’t bother him so much since he’d been through all of this more than a few times before but he knew that it was taking its toll on everyone else so he hoped that for all of their sakes the time would come for them all to graduate sooner rather than later. Right now they still had a few weeks left, though, and they hadn’t even made it to prom yet so he knew that there was still more to come. On top of all of that he was still trying to get his head around the fact that he had two kids that he had never known about. When he was human he had always wanted to have a family of his own one day but he had felt sure that he was never going to get that chance. Now as it happened he had two kids who had lived for over a hundred years without him in their lives but fortunately enough for him they wanted to change that now and he did too. Damon’s reaction was to be expected and as he gestured between them, Stefan nodded. “One of them is like us at least, the other is a witch,” he explained, making sure to keep his voice low so that they wouldn’t be overheard. Most people wouldn’t pay too much attention even if they did overhear anyway but there were those in town who were just looking for an excuse to hunt someone who was supernatural. As Damon spoke again, Stefan couldn’t help but laugh. “You took that a lot better than I thought you would,” he chuckled before nodding. “That’s true.” It had taken Damon and Claire a long time to figure things out but now they had and they seemed happy so Stefan in turn was happy for them no matter how they had managed to get there in the end. “She always has been good for you,” he admitted. Claire had always told it like she saw it with both of them and she had always managed to see the good in Damon even when Stefan had started to struggle with that at times himself. Out of everyone that Damon could have gone for, Stefan was glad that he had fallen for someone who could keep him grounded the way that Claire did. DAMON SALVATORE

Everybody had their breaking point. They could take hit after hit, misery after misery, but at some point something inside of them just snapped. He could’ve sworn it had happened to him a dozen times over the years but that real breaking point, the one that would have him flipping the switch had never quite arrived. Damon knew others would’ve called him a liar for that, it was the truth though. Every time he ended up back on his feet, swaying a little more perhaps but like Elton John said, he was still standing. The kids, and they were kids for the most part, Stefan had thrown himself in with, somehow were too. They’d taken their lumps in this little skirmish with Niklaus Mikaelson. Three of them had died in the ritual at his hands – Tatia, who’d willing handed herself over in place of Elena, some kid from the high school Klaus and his witches had turned into a vampire right before, and some werewolf kid named Riley. Henrik and Tatia’s son had brought them back afterwards and most of them were immediately back in the fight. It was kind of impressive but the next wave of bad guys always seemed bigger than the last Damon wasn’t so sure they should’ve been. He knew what it was to suddenly find yourself In the middle of a war that wasn’t really yours. He’d gotten out, had headed home to more trouble, but so many hadn’t. They’d died out in the middle of nowhere, forgotten now. That wasn’t gonna be the fate any of these kids were imagining for themselves now but if they weren’t careful it was what they were gonna end up with.
God, when did he end up the morbid old man?
Oh right, since he’d ended up older and wiser. The only one of them it seemed wasn’t planning on another high school education and four years of misery in college. Damon sighed, swiping a hand across his throat in a cutting motion. ”Just nip it in the bud now. You want me to have a word with the principal?” A smirk curled Damon’s lip at the thought, a glint of mischief in his eyes as he glanced sideways at his brother. He could’ve done it, ordered the guy to cut the semester off entirely and buy everybody’s freedom. Maybe if Stefan hadn’t had bigger things on his mind he might’ve done it himself but … somehow in the last who knew how long, his brother had discovered that he was a father of two. What … in … the … holy … hell. There’d been a time when his response would’ve instantly been suspicious, that innate doubt that whoever these two turned out to be, they wouldn’t be related to Stefan, it would all be a game. Damon swallowed back his surprise, swallowed back the rest of his bourbon before he let the glass rattle down to the bar. ”A witch?” he asked. ”So their mom was a witch? What were you up to while I was gone?” There was amusement in his voice, a wry twist to his smile as it came. ”New Damon figured screaming that they were lying at the top of his voice here was a bad idea. I am gonna ask if you’re, you know, a hundred percent sure, but if you are …” He shrugged, it wasn’t like there was much he could do about it. At some point before Katherine had gotten her claws into his brother Stefan had gotten some girl pregnant. The wry edge dropped away from Damon’s smile as he lifted his glass towards the bartender and wiggled it in request of another. ”Too good maybe but I figure it’s time we really work that out. She stuck with me, when I got bit, we talked around some things. Surprising huh?” After more than a century of pining for Katherine the pieces had fallen into place to allow him to move on. He’d be damned if it didn’t good doing it too.

The way Giuseppe had wanted Stefan’s life to turn out couldn’t have been anymore different to how it had actually ended up. At seventeen Stefan had become a vampire and since then he had been living with a bloodlust that threatened to turn him into a Ripper if he gave into it. Emily Bennett had been right when she had said that it would be more difficult for him but he hadn’t realised just how right she was back then. He had slipped up more times than he cared to admit and he had done a lot of awful things over the years but he knew that that wasn’t who he wanted to be so now he was fighting to stay in control and be the person that he wanted to be. He had built a life for himself in Mystic Falls and it was one that he cherished. He had given it up for a time after Damon had been bitten by Klaus and the only way to get the cure for the bite was by leaving town with Klaus and he hadn’t known back then if he would ever get to see any of the people that he cared about again but in the end the decision about where he went after he and Klaus parted ways had been his own and there had been just one place that Stefan had wanted to go. Not only had he found the love of his life in Elena while he was in town but he had also managed to repair his relationship with his brother and Damon had finally forgiven him making him complete the transition all those years ago. Now Stefan finally had his brother back and that was something that he knew that he definitely didn’t want to give up. For the first time in a while things had been going well, or at least they had been until he had almost been killed by the hunter that had mistaken him for Jacob, but thankfully the twins had shown up when they had done and they had managed to talk the hunter down. If they hadn’t then Stefan didn’t doubt that he would have died and he knew that he owed them for that even if it had been a case of mistaken identity in the first place. That was something that Stefan knew he needed to tell Damon about but for now it was good to just be able to have a drink and catch up with his brother. They lived at the Boarding House together but with everything that was going on they didn’t get the chance to do something like this too often but it was something that he hoped they would be able to start doing more from now on. Stefan still had a bit longer left at high school but after that his time would be his own before he started at Whitmore with the others and if he was honest he was looking forward to being able to take it easy for a while. “If it goes on much longer I might take you up on that,” Stefan chuckled. His compulsion wasn’t as strong as his brother’s due to the fact that he drank animal blood instead of human blood. Stefan knew that he probably could have done it himself but he had been a bit preoccupied lately and something told him that Damon would have more fun with it anyway. More than anything right now Stefan was just trying to make it through the rest of the school year in one piece and get his head around the fact that he was a father. It was something that he had always wanted but given that he had become a vampire at seventeen he had never had the chance, or at least so he had thought. “Apparently so. I had no idea when we were together,” Stefan admitted as he took a sip of his drink. He had never told Damon about Valerie, he had never told anyone about her, but now he knew that it was time to do just that. “I was miserable while you were gone so I went to a fair and that’s where I met Valerie. We hit it off and started spending more time together and eventually we spent the night together. Father was unbearable while you were gone so Valerie and I planned to run away together but she never showed up. I still don’t know why and I had no idea that she was pregnant at the time,” he explained, hoping that his brother would understand. He hadn’t wanted to talk to anyone about it back then and a year later Katherine had shown up and everything had changed once more. “That wouldn’t be your best idea,” Stefan agreed as he looked over at his brother. “At first I thought they had to be lying but then I started to see myself and Valerie in them. I asked Henrik to make sure and he did a test that confirmed that we share the same DNA. It turns out he and Lucy have been friends for years and he trusts her,” Stefan shrugged. After everything that had happened he did too to an extent but he knew that he needed to get to know both Lucy and Jacob better. “You can make that two, thanks,” Stefan said, offering the bartender a smile as Damon asked for another drink and Stefan requested one for himself as well. “Not as surprising as you might think, it was only a matter of time before the two of you worked it out,” he chuckled. “I’m so pleased for you, you deserve to have someone who makes you happy.”DAMON SALVATORE

Their mother had died when Stefan was still relatively young. By that point the two of them had already started to look out for one another, Giuseppe’s temper and obvious dislike of his eldest son pushing both of his boys closer. Damon knew he’d been the one to jeopardise that time and time again. When it had come to their mother’s funeral he’d been the one to bolt, leaving Stefan to handle all of that by himself. When Giuseppe had started to make noises about his cowardly son not picking up the mantle and heading for war to defend their town and their way of life, he’d turned his back on Stefan and gone to play soldier. Hell, Stefan had been the only one glad to see him back when he’d run from war. Giuseppe couldn’t stand to look at him then, the public façade of politeness he had to put on in front of their guest probably choking the old man. It hadn’t been enough though, had it? Not when Katherine was right there offering him so much more.
A way to snatch the power back from Giuseppe. A way to live forever, to thrive.
He hadn’t stopped to think that she was playing his brother in the same way or that Stefan had lived a life without him there. He’d been gone, terrified in some corner of a field somewhere with guns cracking in the distance and the desperate belief that he’d done the wrong thing gripping him. Even afterwards he hadn’t stopped to asked questions. Not like now. For the first time in so long the two of them were like they had been at the start, enough that he’d go to the high school and twist the Principal around his little finger to get him to give the entire damn school a break. Damon tapped his fingers to his brow in a sloppy salute. ”Anytime,” he said dryly. Undoubtedly the rest of the school would appreciate it too. The entire Scooby Gang had to be getting tired of the school year being stretched out to an eternity now. He definitely couldn’t have stomached it. Then again he’d never felt the urge to put himself through school again.
Not when there was so much else going on, enough to have him staring at Stefan with wide blue eyes now. He’d gulped down a mouthful of the bourbon, the burn not enough to rid him of the surprise that closed a fist around his throat. ”You’re making it sound like it was serious,” he managed dryly. Seriously, what the hell had happened while he was gone? It hadn’t been that long but apparently those months had been enough time for teenaged Stefan to get himself in way over his head. Feeling the jab of guilt at his brother’s admission he lowered his head, rolling his glass between his fingers. ”You think he had something to do with it?” he asked, his voice cold as referred to Giuseppe. He wouldn’t have put it past him, killing any happiness either of his sons had seemed like his life’s pursuit. The smile that eventually broke through was wry, his lips twisting. ”A warlock DNA test, who knew … it’s a small world.” Damon clucked his tongue. In Mystic Falls it was pretty much tiny. Damon let out a long breath as the bartender went to get their drinks, his mouth twisting into that slanted smile as Stefan asked about Claire. ”A century’s a pretty long time to build something like that up. There’s plenty of people out there who’d argue that with you.” Most still hated him for everything he’d done when he’d come back into town, heart broken and desperate to free the woman he thought he’d loved for over a hundred years.

Stefan had faced a lot of difficult times in his life since becoming a vampire but the truth was that his human life wasn’t any different With Damon away fighting the war things at home were more difficult than ever. Their father had become even more controlling and Stefan had started to feel like he was suffocating. He had hated being in the one place that was meant to be home to him and by the time Valerie came into his life he was desperate for a way to get out. Stefan hadn’t known when or if Damon would be coming home but he had known that he couldn’t stand being alone with their father any longer. The man had had Stefan’s whole life mapped out for him and it wasn’t what Stefan had wanted at all. He had wanted the chance to live his life his own way but considering that that had always been Damon’s thing rather than his he knew that it was expected of him to take over the running of their family’s estate one day even though that responsibility was meant to go to the eldest son. Stefan had wanted so badly to stand up to their father but it wasn’t so easy for him back then so he and Valerie had planned a way to get away from the man for good except she hadn’t showed up. If she had then things would have turned out differently but Stefan knew that he wouldn’t have met any of the people in his life now if that had happened. He had a lot of good friends in his corner now, he had Elena and for the first time in over a century it was like he had the old Damon back, his offer to speak to the Principal and get them all some time off school proof of that, so he knew that he didn’t regret the way that things had worked out but he couldn’t deny that he still wished that he’d had the chance to be there for Jacob and Lucy. He had that chance now, though, and he knew that he wanted Damon to have that same chance. They both had their own lives and the twins did as well but they were still family and Stefan had learned a long time ago that that counted for a lot. Even when things between him and Damon were at their worst they had still looked out for each other and that bond was one that he could see in Lucy and Jacob as well. Lifting his glass to his lips, Stefan took a sip. “It was. We fell in love,” Stefan explained. It had all happened before Katherine had come into their lives and Stefan knew that perhaps that was why he had found himself enjoying her company in the first place. After Valerie stood him up he had felt more alone and trapped than ever so having Katherine around had been like a breath of fresh air. As Damon asked if he thought their father had something to do with it, Stefan’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I’m not sure. I never told anyone about Valerie but you know what he was like, he always seemed to know what was going on,” he shrugged. He hoped that their father hadn’t had anything to do with it but he wasn’t sure that he would ever find out for certain. Damon’s next words were enough to draw a laugh from Stefan’s lips. “Believe me, I was surprised as well,” he chuckled as he finished his drink. As talk turned to Claire and Damon said that there were plenty of people who would argue with him about Damon deserving to be happy, Stefan considered that for a moment. “Perhaps but they’re not your brother,” he offered. It was different for him, even when he and Damon were at each other’s throats Stefan had still wanted his brother to find happiness and he was glad that he finally had. DAMON SALVATORE

Katherine had been between the two of them, even for the hundred years that he’d thought she’d been killed when town council had figured out what was going on. Rounded up, burned in the church, all of them dead and yet still that Katherine sized barrier between him and Stefan. Damon knew that Katherine would’ve loved that. She’d have revelled in the fact that he’d sworn to make Stefan’s life an ever living misery. Probably had, watching them from a distance, knowing that he’d spent the next century and a half denying himself anything close to what he’d thought he’d had with her. Poor little Damon, pining away, only learning the truth after all those years, like a punch to the gut when he’d found out the truth of what had happened that night and had stabbed so many in the back in town to get that tomb open and realise that in the end he’d been the one stabbed in the back. Talk about a learning curve. After that it had seemed like he’d known the truth about it all, had started to accept it all and move on but Stefan … oh his little brother still had his secrets and Damon was willing to bet they’d choke Katherine with rage.
Good.
He would’ve laughed at the mental image if Stefan hadn’t just dropped the news of the century in his lap. Kids. A long lost love that he hadn’t spoken a word about in all that time. It was enough to knock a guy off of his stool. Damon stayed upright, knocking back the bourbon though. He set his glass down, pursed his lips for a silent whistle. ”But it didn’t work out…” he drawled lightly. ”And then Little Miss Sunshine came along and had us both wrapped around her little fingers.” Compulsion and a lifetime of living with a man determined to crush you would leave someone room to do that. If it had happened right before Katherine had shown up at the door he might’ve asked if she’d had anything to do with it but with the timing and knowing his father it was far more likely that Giuseppe and his little council had done something to make sure that Stefan wasn’t about to walk away from Giuseppe’s expectations.
Damon’s lips curved into a bitter smile. He raised a hand, tapping fingertips against his temple. ”You mean, he knew everything you were doing before you’d even thought about doing it? Yep.” He’d do something about it too, like pushing his eldest son to go fight for his cause, hoping to hell he’d die out there in some forsaken field so he could garner sympathy and get rid of his problem all at once. ”You dog,” Damien joked, thumping a fist against Stefan’s upper arm. Oh how the roles had changed. These days he was the one getting serious, things with Claire spring boarding from Klaus’ bite. ”True,” Damon conceded, bobbing his head as the bartender returned with fresh drinks. ”Did you ever think she was gonna show up here after? Seeing her show up now like she did…” That had been a shock. The universe slamming them back together at an opportune time. Maybe fate didn’t have such a hate on for him after all.

Stefan had never been able to bring himself to tell anyone about Valerie before and the truth was he hadn’t thought that he would ever have to. The two of them had met almost a year before Katherine had arrived in Mystic Falls and Stefan had fallen in love. Valerie had become the first girl he had ever been with and they had planned on running away together because he had wanted to get away from his father who had become even more unbearable with Damon gone and Valerie had wanted to escape her family too. They had both thought that they would be able to move away together and start over somewhere new but it hadn’t worked out that way at all. For a long time Damon had been the only person keeping Stefan in Mystic Falls but with him away fighting in the war Stefan had known that there wasn’t anything left tying him to the town. He hadn’t had the courage to leave on his own after Valerie stood him up, though, so instead he had returned home and tried to act like everything was normal when in reality his heart was broken in two. “Exactly. I wish I knew what happened to her and why Jacob and Lucy ended up being raised by someone else but I’m not sure I’ll ever find out the answer to that,” Stefan admitted as he took a sip of his drink. “One thing I know for sure is that Valerie must have been a witch. It’s the only way Lucy could be one,” he explained. He had never come across a siphoner before so he wasn’t entirely sure how that happened but he knew that she must have been born a witch due to her connection to Valerie because as far as he knew there wasn’t any magic that ran within the Salvatore bloodline. “By the time Katherine arrived I think I was desperate for a distraction.” Their father had been trying to force him into an arranged marriage at that time and that was the farthest thing from what Stefan had wanted. That hadn’t mattered to Giuseppe, though, and Stefan knew that he would have been expected to go through with it if things hadn’t worked out the way they had done. “I still don’t know how he did that, I swear he had eyes and ears everywhere,” he shrugged. Their father had known things that there was no way he should have known so Stefan wouldn’t be surprised if the man had known about the plan that he and Valerie had made as well but Stefan knew that it was too late to find out the answer to that now. “You know it was never like that,” Stefan said, rolling his eyes playfully as Damon called him a dog. Stefan had never been like that and he was pretty sure that he never would be. Taking the fresh drink he was offered, Stefan thanked the bartender before glancing over at his brother once more. “No, I didn’t. I went to meet her like we arranged but she didn’t show up. I checked in with her family and they said she’d already died so I didn’t think we would ever see her again,” he admitted. He should have known really but back then there hadn’t been anything to suggest that anything was amiss. “For what it’s worth I’m glad she’s here. I haven’t seen you this happy for a long time.”DAMON SALVATORE

It was easy to blame Katherine or Giuseppe for everything that had happened in their lives – all the ill luck and the misery that had spilled out after their mom had died – but there were so many layers to what had happened it was impossible to pick them apart at times. If he hadn’t run from the front lines maybe Stefan would’ve had an escape that came with those kids and a white picket fence instead of transition and the tangled century and half that followed. Hell, if their mom hadn’t died maybe it would’ve been an out for both of them but wishful thinking didn’t get you anywhere. Damon knew that first hand, you could long for something all you wanted and in the end the universe snatched that shining brass ring away just to torment you. Sometimes you hadn’t even seen it was there. Stefan had gone more than a century unaware that he’d ended up a father. Twins. Yikes. Damon puffed out his cheeks, picking his glass up again to stare into it like it was going to give any answers on that front. ”Someone out there’s gotta have a clue,” he managed, semi-sagely. Dark brows bunched as he glanced up at his brother. ”This is Mystic Falls. Anything magical’s gonna leave a mark with someone.” Especially people like the Bennetts. Maybe Grams would’ve had some idea .. if he hadn’t killed her. Damon grimaced faintly as he sipped from his glass. Bonnie might not’ve believed it but there was some regret there. It burst out wearily now as Stefan admitted that he’d been looking for a distraction when Katherine had arrived. ”You know you’ve got lousy taste in distractions?” Like he’d been much better. Katherine had been one for him too, one that had turned around and bitten him on the ass, almost literally, as soon as it had suited her.
Letting out a little groan at it, Damon scrubbed a hand through his hair and pushed it back from his face. Damon smiled bitterly when his hand fell back to the bar. He picked his glass up, studied the dregs of bourbon pooling among the melted ice and gestured at the Grill with it. ”Everybody who wanted in with the Founding families was looking out for him. He could’ve run them out of here, ruined their families so they got loyal.” And his sons got miserable. Until they’d found a way out from under his thumb eventually. Damon shot his brother a grin, knowing that out of the two of them Stefan was the one Giuseppe shouldn’t have been worrying about but that need for control had been there with both brothers. Never ending until Stefan had finally snapped and put a bloody end to him.
Now there was freedom. A weight lifted off even with the Mikaelsons in town. If they’d been around back then Giuseppe wouldn’t have stood a chance and maybe the two of them would’ve done. That would’ve meant no Claire though. Damon felt that melancholic bubble burst in his stomach, a faint grunt rolling out of him as he reached for his fresh glass. ”I guess when you don’t want to break their hearts … or hurt them … it’s the only way out.” He felt that gratitude in his own chest, eclipsing almost everything else. Shifting on the stool, Damon hitched his glass, holding it out to his brother. ”Here’s to the past bubbling back up, huh?” If Claire and Stefan’s kids had found their way here there was always a chance Valerie would too. Mystic Falls never allowed anybody to stay dead for good.
