The last place someone should’ve been when they’d spent the better part of a weekend at the lowest point of their life was a bar. Alix would never have said she was one of those people who prescribed herself half a liquor store the moment things started looking bad but she’d done just that on Friday night. Her tongue still felt woolly from it, her throat scratchy and raw from combination of vodka, gut rot whiskey and the purging of all the poison in her gut to the one person who mattered enough to stop deceiving. It had been what Derek had wanted all along, honesty, but she doubted what had emerged about her family, about what she had been doing here in town thanks to Ralphy, had been what Derek had been anticipating in the first place. The good she’d done in trying to keep people out of the hands of the Dread Doctors, in helping them adjust, eclipsed by the lies and the shadow her family had a tendency to cast over everything supernatural. Reaching for the glass that was far more soda than rum, Alix took a long gulp. Sunday morning, with enough words still trapped in her throat to make her feel like she was going to choke on them, she’d left his apartment and had walked home. A hot shower, a glance at her shattered phone, like it would’ve repaired itself in the days that she’d been gone and she’d slipped out of the apartment, heading for the woods with a camera in hand and a plan to try and find some redemption from all of the damage that her family had done.
Walking into the Grill 8 hours later, her boots muddy and her camera memory half filled with whatever evidence she could gather from the spot she thought that Matt Donovan had turned back up in and the tombs where Stiles and Scott had found Derek, Alix studied the faces at the bar. Derek might end up cutting ties with her if forgiveness wasn’t something he could manage, but at least she could do some of the others here in town some good. There’d been no sign of Alaric Saltzman then but if the man’s habits were true to form, he’d stop in at some point tonight. So she’d waited, legs hooked around a barstool, uploading the photos to her tablet, choking down a burger as she’d lingered over the shots that had already been on the chip, the sun rising over the homestead where she’d been hiding out before Ralphy had reached out, photos from the road, those she’d held off on selling, the candids she’d taken since she’d turned up back in town. Alix sank her teeth into her lip, her throat aching again as she stared at a shot of Derek. She doubted he’d even realised that she’d taken them as she’d fiddled with her phone. Tapping the screen she clicked away from one of him sleeping, that brooding face of his softened somehow as he’d slept. Alix raised a hand, shoved it back through hair as she glanced along the bar and paused. Saltzman had arrived while she wasn’t looking. Gathering the camera, the tablet, she made her way along the bar. Pausing next to him, Alix dipped her head, offered a faint smile. ”Alaric Saltzman? I hope you don’t mind me disturbing you.” Without waiting for a confirmation or an offer, Alix hitched herself onto the stool next to him, offered a hand. ”Alix Quinn. I believe you may know my father, Seth. He’s spoken highly of you and I was hoping I could use that connection to reach out to you about something. About someone…” Shifting on her seat, Alix looked pointedly through the crowd at the Donovan boy as he headed towards the back to bus a table.

Ric had arrived in Mystic Falls a few years ago for one purpose and that was to finally kill the vampire responsible for killing his wife. Even though he had thought that it would only end up being a flying visit he hadn’t actually known how long it would take to find the vampire he had been looking for so he had taken a job at the local high school and he had spent his free time trying to find the vampire that had taken Isobel from him. Back then he had never thought that he would end up learning that she had chosen to leave him and that she had sought out Damon herself and asked him to turn her but that was the way that his life had turned out and he was doing his best to keep going. There was a time when he had seen himself having a future with Isobel but those days were long gone and now that he finally had some sense of closure he knew that he was finally ready to start living his life and move on from her once and for all. He had started to do that with Jenna but things there had ended pretty quickly although now he knew that he at least could let someone else in again and that alone was enough to give him hope that perhaps he wouldn’t have to spend the rest of his life alone after all. That wasn’t what he wanted, if he was honest he wanted to settle down and start a family of his own one day but for a long time that hadn’t seemed like it was ever going to be a possibility so he was glad that things were finally starting to get better. Of course he still had things that he needed to focus on like hunting and work but even those things were becoming a lot more bearable at the moment. He wasn’t the kind of hunter who liked to shoot first and ask questions later, he had learned firsthand that things weren’t always what he seemed and now he had people in his life who were vampires, werewolves and witches so he knew that there were those in town who were a part of the supernatural world but still deserved to be protected. He had tried to believe that while he had been hunting Damon but back then he had been fuelled by anger and grief so it was a lot easier said than done. Now he finally knew what had happened to Isobel his mind was clear for the first time in a long time and he knew that he wanted it to stay that way for as long as possible. When it came to his work, however, that was a different matter entirely. He was doing his best to help guide his students as much as he could but when it came to grading assignments that was something that was still easier down with a bit of a buzz and it was with that in mind that he had made his way to the Grill that evening. Finding a stool at the bar was easy enough and Ric quickly ordered himself some food and a glass of bourbon before setting to work grading his first paper. That was without a doubt the one part of his job that he always hated but it had to be done so he knew that he just needed to knuckle down and get on with it. He wasn’t even half way through when a voice addressed him, however, and he looked up from the paper to see that a woman had joined him. “Not at all, you’re saving me actually,” he admitted, taking a sip of his drink as she sat down next to him and offered her hand. “It’s nice to meet you Alix but please, call me Ric,” he said as he reached forward and shook her outstretched hand. “I know Seth well, he is a good hunter albeit a little stubborn at times,” he nodded. “How can I help?” he asked before following her gaze. “Matt Donovan? What’s your interest in him?”ALIX QUINN

This was a risk. Hunters who had worked with her parents tended to have one thing in common. They were as militant as the Quinns had always been. Her dad had scoffed at those who weren’t, rolling right over them when they’d balked at that last minute. Revealing what she was to any of them would either have resulted in them killing her the way she imagined her parents were going to kill her or them calling her dad or mom up to tell them that their daughter had become one of the enemy. Alix knew that her dad wouldn’t stop to listen to what had happened to her, he would just see the monster behind those familiar green eyes. Alaric Saltzman was far enough removed her parents now that phoning her dad to check that she was who she said she was might not have been his first reaction but there was a risk here. If he was as concerned for the kids in this town as she thought he was then maybe he was going to hear her out, she couldn’t lay money on it though. After what had happened with Derek it was obvious that she was way beyond getting the benefit of the doubt from the people in this town. Even with Ralphy behind her pulling her strings, Alix had blood on her hands and she knew it. Derek’s might not have been on there literally, his quick move with the gun had prevented that, but metaphorically she had cut him deep enough to leave a wound. She’d cut herself in the process, both literally and figuratively, and those wounds weren’t going to heal anytime soon, not even if she managed to get Matt Donovan out of trouble here.
There was a chance that Derek would show up here but Alix had risked coming anyway, trailing in with muddy boots and a camera full of the sort of evidence that might just answer a few of the questions the people in this town in the know had about what the hell was suddenly amongst them. She’d settled herself at the bar, opening up her own laptop and losing herself in the other photos she’d taken since Derek had spotted the cameras in her bar on the first night. If only the photos of a spot marred by violence weren’t hidden behind all the others. Life wasn’t that perfect though, she couldn’t switch off all the trouble that seemed to follow her. Tearing herself away from the life that was beyond her grip Alix had noticed that her target had arrived. She’d grabbed her stuff, weaving her way towards him before she spoke. A part of her wasn’t surprised that he didn’t mind setting aside his word for the night. ”Any excuse to get out of marking?” she asked, a trace of teasing in her voice as she tipped her head towards the pile of papers in front of him. Wanting to kick this off the right way, wanting to be up front from the start she’d offered her hand, shaking it firmly as Ric took hers, and she’d told him what she was here for immediately. ”It’s nice to meet you too Ric.” Her mouth twisted faintly, a trace of homesickness in the pit of her stomach. Stubborn was the polite way of talking about her dad. ”My dad puts mules to shame. He sticks to his guns and to the family line … and he wouldn’t be here to talk first. I think we both know that well enough. I’m not like him in that way and that’s why I’ve come to speak to you about Matt. I know he was taken and I know who by. How’s he doing?” Few who knew what a hard line her dad took would believe that she wasn’t just looking for an angle to kill the kid. Perhaps even Derek was on that not-trusting her list after all that had happened but she’d been honest when she’d said she wasn’t like her dad in that way.

With so many disappearances in Mystic Falls it was difficult to keep up sometimes but one had hit pretty close to home and that was Matt. Ric was still no closer to figuring out who had taken the kid or why but something had changed with him and Ric would be lying if he said that he wasn’t worried. Elena and the others had wanted Matt to remain in the dark in the hope that he would be able to stay out of the supernatural world and the danger that came with it but it seemed that he had been sucked into it anyway. Matt had almost taken Damon’s head off when he found him and even though Ric knew that his best friend probably deserved it for what he had done to Vicki, which just wasn’t Matt. The kid had never had much of a temper but he had lost his cool while he was with Damon and while Ric knew that the vampire could probably make even nuns swear if he wanted to it was clear that there was more going on than any of them knew. Matt had been taken for a week and had no recollection of where he had been, who had taken him or what had been done to him during that time and that alone was a red flag to Ric. He wasn’t the only one to have disappeared like that but he had been the first and the number of disappearances had been growing drastically ever since then. Most of those who were taken showed up again sooner or later but the missing time and lack of knowledge about what had happened or who had taken them was common to all of the disappearances and Ric knew that whoever was responsible had to be stopped before anyone else got hurt. It had taken them a while to figure out that Matt had been turned into a kitsune, Ric had never come across one before and there were so many different types and the only thing they’d had to go on were the fighting skills that Matt seemed to have acquired over night although there was no telling what had been done to him during that time. Now Matt seemed to have it under control better and for that Ric was grateful. He still spent more time at the Grill than he had done before so that he could keep an eye on the kid but the truth was that he had a better handle on it now than Ric would have expected so that at least was a weight off his mind. That day he needed to get some papers graded but he knew that there was no way he was going to get through the stack that he had without having at least a few drinks while he was at it to make the papers that he had to read even remotely bearable. As it happened he had someone to keep him company instead, though, so he set the papers he needed to grade to one side and turned his attention to his new companion instead. “You could say that. I can only read papers that are nothing more than Wikipedia-regurgita so many times without wanting to bang my head against a wall.” Some of the students got it and knew better than to do that but there were still some that tried it on no matter how many times Ric told them that he would flunk them on the spot if they did. “Seth always has seen things as black and white,” he nodded, choosing his words carefully. He wasn’t entirely sure what to make of Alix at the moment but until he knew what she wanted he knew that he needed to reserve judgement. As she turned her attention to Matt, however, his guard went up instantly. “If you know that then you know more than any of us do. He doesn’t remember a thing,” he said, watching her carefully as he tried to gauge her reaction. “He’s doing as well as can be expected but he’s not a threat. If you want to go after him then you’ll have to go through me first.” He knew that Seth wouldn’t hesitate in going after Matt if he knew that he wasn’t human any longer but Ric had learned to give people the benefit of the doubt and Matt was still a good kid so he knew that he wasn’t going to let anyone hurt him. As a Quinn she’d been raised to see herself as somewhat separate from everybody around them. They had knowledge that most didn’t, they might have taught across the country, molding your minds with the combined wisdom of generations of the family, but for the most part they operated in a strata of society that most didn’t see. Alix had seen through that bull the first hunt her and Rohan had gone on after she’d been allowed to hunt again. She hadn’t called it to her dad though, at least not hard enough. Seth Quinn wouldn’t be swayed from his beliefs. The morning after she’d finally been returned to the high school and she’d seen those claw marks on the floor, felt the threads of the linoleum under her blunt, human nails, Alix had known that she was no longer Seth Quinn’s daughter, not really. She could still look the part, play the part, like she was about to now with a man she knew was familiar with her dad, but that was just a veneer over what the Dread Doctors had turned her into. Peeling that veneer away had been necessary time and time again after she’d started to trail the Dread Doctors, yanked in certain directions by Ralphy’s instructions. It never got any easier though. She had far more in common with the people her family would’ve killed on sight. She’d become one of them, only far more monstrous at times. There was blood thick on her hands, blood she tried to wash off by helping out kids like Matt. Alix knew she wasn’t always successful but when she’d worked out what had happened to the boy she’d known she couldn’t just bury her head in the sand or walk away.
Resisting the urge to let her shoulders creep up around her ears as she pushed away the thought of being spotted here by the one person she’d cut deepest here Alix had packed up her stuff and headed for Ric as soon as he’d arrived. In the him, in the papers he’d set aside to mark, she could see faint reminders of her dad. The thought had her stomach twisting slightly as she played nice. One red brow arched as he labelled them all Wikipedia-regurgita and then she was snorting. ”I guess the invention of the internet was every teacher’s worst nightmare,” she mused. ”At least when we were copying from the encyclopedia in the old days it was proof we’d cracked a book open.” She was making herself sound far older than she was but Seth Quinn had been a stickler for that even with his youngest son. Alix raked her teeth over her lower lip to hide a smile that would’ve been more than a little sad. ”It’s a polite way of saying he’s bullheaded enough to believe he’s the only one who knows best,” she said dryly. ”It’s OK, I’m pretty willing to admit my dad makes most militants look tolerant.” Alix had known from the age of 17 that she just wasn’t built the same. She wanted to help people like her. The minute she’d mentioned Matt she felt the change in Ric. Swallowing hard, Alix let her eyes drift along the bar in search of a drink. ”He won’t, they make sure of that.” Alix’s hands went up when Ric made it clear that he wasn’t a threat, that she’d have to go through him if she wanted to go after Matt. ”I’m not here as a Quinn, not in that way,” she promised. ”I’m here because I’m like him. I want to help, Ric.” Cards on the table. Her own back stripped bare. If this was going to come back and bite her on the ass then it would be right here, right now.

Before he moved to Mystic Falls, Ric had always thought that life was black and white for the most part. He had thought that all supernaturals were evil and deserved to be taken out and that was a mentality that he knew that a lot of hunters shared. He had met a few supernaturals along the way who were an exception to that rule but it was only when he arrived in Mystic Falls and realised just how many were only trying to live their lives in peace that he had come to realise just how difficult it must be for them. He had arrived in town to try and kill Damon but in the end the guy had become his best friend. He had finally gained some closure over what had happened with Isobel and even though it had hurt that she had decided to go for a life as a vampire over a life with him it had at least made him realise that it was time for him to truly move on with his life without feeling guilty about it any longer. It had given him the push that he’d needed to truly open his heart to Jenna and even though he had come so close to ruining what was going on between them by keeping the truth about the supernatural world from her she had thankfully found it within herself to forgive him for keeping her in the dark. Life in Mystic Falls wasn’t easy, it was full of ups and downs but one thing that Ric had learned during his time there was that there were even some supernaturals that deserved to be protected. He now knew how to look past what a person was and see who they were underneath it all and it meant that he didn’t target every supernatural in town like some hunters did. He was trying to be better than them and he hoped that that counted for something. He didn’t know what had happened to Matt but the truth was that Ric was determined to get to the bottom of it. He knew that Matt was a good kid and the fact that he’d disappeared for a week and turned up different from how he was when he disappeared had to mean something. Ric had heard rumours about the same thing happening to one or two other people around town but Matt’s was the first confirmed case that he knew about and that worried him. He knew that Matt wouldn’t hurt anyone and if he was targeted then chances were that others were going to be as well or the person responsible might even come back to check on the result so he had taken to spending more time at the Grill than usual so that he could keep an eye on the boy. Instead of someone who might be responsible he had come across a Quinn and he knew better than to let his guard down just yet. “I know it’s more convenient but when some students don’t even bother to take out the citation marks it takes the piss,” he admitted. That was something that he just couldn’t stand and he knew that he was never going to let his students get away with it even if he was grading papers with a buzz. “Your words, not mine,” Ric said as he lifted his glass to his lips and took a sip. He still wasn’t sure what to make of Alix just yet but as she started asking about Matt he didn’t hesitate in setting her straight that the boy was off limits. “What do you mean?” he asked, unable to deny that he was intrigued by Alix’s comment that she was like Matt. She seemed to know at least a little about what was going on and Ric needed to know too if he was going to be able to keep others safe. ALIX QUINN

After over a hundred years of hunting the Quinn lines on the matter weren’t just set in stone, they were practically etched a mile into it. Alix knew that her family had seen some horrific things over the years, had saved hundreds from horrible situations. There’d been a time when she’d taken pride in that and had wanted to be just like her parents and her brothers, heading out day after day to try and protect people from the things that lurked out there in the dark. It was naïve. You couldn’t always link the results of what they managed with the equally monstrous things they did to get those results. Blood had always been on their hands but they all seemed to have become immune to seeing it, except for her. The moment Ralphy had started to blackmail her into killing for money it had become visible. Every cell in her body felt steeped in the blood of all the innocent people they’d killed. That was what some of them had been, not monsters, not things, just people trying to live their lives in shitty circumstances that they hadn’t asked for most of the time. Alix would’ve said she’d been trying to do the same but that wouldn’t make up for what she’d been forced to do afterwards. Rather than be outed and killed herself she’d done those things, only starting to draw away too late. It was what had made it almost impossible for Derek to look her in the eye after all that had happened between the two of them. The horse had bolted there, the stable door left hanging open in the wind and no matter what she did now Alix knew there was no closing it. It wasn’t going to stop her from trying to protect the others whose lives had been twisted up by things that were truly monstrous but it did meant that her scales weren’t going to be balanced by her penitence any time soon.
It wasn’t going to stop her trying though. Alix knew she could’ve been yanking the lion’s tail by coming to speak to a hunter who had some sort of connection to her parents tonight but her luck had held with the Winchesters, she had to believe it would with Alaric Saltzman too. From what she’d been able to tell he had as many connections with the things her family would slaughter these days as he did with the hunting world. Including Matt. She was slipping into that topic slowly though, dipping her toe so to speak. Alix’s mouth twisted wryly as she glanced across at Ric. ”I’d just call that an instant F,” she drawled lightly. Her lines in the sand weren’t always the same as everybody else’s though, they’d been twisted multiple times over the years until she wasn’t even sure where hers were anymore. All she knew was that they were far enough away from her dad’s. The trace of a smile that had remained faded away, leaving her worrying at her lower lip until it blanched. Alix let it go, huffing out a faint laugh. ”And they’re about as polite as I’ll get about him,” she admitted. Most would’ve said worse, she imagined, just not to her face. She was perfectly aware of who her family were now and what her parents would do if Ralphy went opening his mouth. Spotting the bartender finally, Alix gestured to them, and then lifted her empty glass, shaking it in his direction. She didn’t look back at Ric, she stared down at her laptop on the bar instead. ”What I think happened to Matt happened to me,” she managed hoarsely. Twisting on the seat, Alix let her eyes rise to Ric’s. She couldn’t let them flash here but she knew he’d get what she meant. ”I disappeared from a high school, turned back up days later. No sword,” she spoke those two words low, ”but not the same anymore. You still worried I’m gonna go running to tell my dad what’s happened after that?” Alix knew she couldn’t blame him if there were still doubts. She was the daughter of a hunter, from a long line of hunters, most of whom didn’t stop at the monstrous.

Ric knew that life would be easier just about anywhere else but the truth was that there wasn’t anywhere else that he would rather be. He had needed a fresh start more than he had realised after Isobel left and Mystic Falls had given him the chance to find that. Now he had moved on with Jenna and things were going pretty well between them so even though it was a dangerous place to live given just how many supernaturals had decided to call the town their home he knew that it was where he belonged. He hadn’t planned on sticking around for too long when he first moved there but now he was glad that he had decided to stay. With everything that was going on in the town it had a habit of keeping him busy but Ric knew that it was much better than being bored anyway. He had been there for Elena, Stefan, Damon and the others through everything that had happened so far and he knew that he was going to be there for them through everything that was to come as well. Right now they had the worry over what was going on with Klaus hanging over their heads but there was more than that going on in town as well just like there always was. With all of the disappearances that were going on around town and no clue who was behind them it was getting more difficult than ever to know where they were going to strike next and that was something that Ric didn’t like. They had already taken Matt and used him for whatever experiments they were performing on people and he didn’t like to think of who they would end up taking next. They needed to be stopped but that was proving to be easier said than done although Ric knew that he wasn’t going to give up. Hanging out at the Grill so that he could keep an eye on Matt probably wasn’t the best idea in the world but it was all he had at the moment at least until he was able to figure out what was going on around Mystic Falls. He would normally spend the evening with Jenna but considering she had plans with Elena and Jeremy he knew that he didn’t want to intrude on some family time so being able to keep an eye on someone else that he cared about didn’t seem like such a bad idea. There were more people in Mystic Falls that he cared about than he’d had in his life in a long time and he knew better than to turn his back on them when they needed him the most. He hadn’t thought that someone would end up joining him but he couldn’t deny that his curiosity was piqued. “It’s tempting,” Ric admitted. Sometimes he did instantly flunk the kids that tried it but it often depended on how much effort they actually put in themselves considering that some of the kids couldn’t really afford to fail classes. “That doesn’t surprise me,” he nodded. There were a lot of people who wouldn’t have any nice things to say about certain members of Alix’s family but Ric knew better than to think that the whole family was like that. Ric couldn’t deny that he was surprised as Alix started speaking again and as she said that the same thing happened to her he found himself studying her carefully for a moment. “No, I don’t think you will,” he admitted. “What did they turn you into?” he asked, his curiosity getting the better of him as he looked over at her. He needed to know what she remembered about her time with them but right now he wanted a better idea of what they were capable of. ALIX QUINN

Changing her name when she’d left her family might’ve made things a hell of a lot easier. Remaining Alix Quinn had only brought trouble to her door. It had put things together for Brady, forcing the skeletons in the Quinn family closet out into the light, and it had more than just Rick here looking at her with suspicion. What it could do to open doors for her within the hunting community almost worth the suspicion that came right along with it. Alix knew there was no way she could blame Alaric for instantly being wary about why she was asking about Matt. If she was her father there wouldn’t have been much asking. Seth Quinn would’ve walked into the Grill like he owned the place, spotted Matt and then at the end of the night found a nice quiet spot to deal with him. That would’ve been his justification, he was dealing with a problem. It wouldn’t have mattered that Matt hadn’t been asked to be kidnapped, he hadn’t asked to be experimented on or turned into something he didn’t understand. It didn’t matter that he hadn’t done anything monstrous yet. The boy hadn’t taken a life and from what she’d seen of the teenagers in this town, he wasn’t likely to either. People around him had dealt with their own supernatural difficulties and had come out of it all the other side determined to protect the town. Maybe they should’ve been looking harder at her to do that but she was glad they weren’t right now. For Ralphy she had done some horrible things but outside of that she was trying to do everything she could to even the scales a little, to make up for it all.
Alix had let humour lead the way into the conversation but she’d known from the start that it wasn’t going to last long. It hadn’t, not with her dad on the table here. Forcing herself to stop biting her lip she’d tried to joke about it herself. ”Once a Quinn, always a Quinn, I guess I’m just lucky that I don’t quite have his reputation.” There were some who probably spoke about her in the same way though, Derek likely included right now. If she was lucky Stiles wasn’t whispering the truth in his ear, it was bad enough as it was. Alix felt the weight in Ric’s gaze but there was a certainty there that she hadn’t expected to hear. She let out a long breath, her shoulders slumping slightly as she managed a chuckle. ”You’re one of the first to admit that. Most people don’t want to trust me at all.” That was because some knew what she was doing and didn’t trust that she wouldn’t cave the next time Ralphy yanked her chain hard enough to have her choking. Going silent on the matter as the bartender returned with her drink, Alix tipped her head towards the taps. ”Can I get a coke too, lots of ice? Thanks.” She needed something that wasn’t going burn like napalm in the pit of her stomach. It wasn’t the alcohol that did that, it couldn’t anymore but the part of her brain that remembered it was quite capable of mustering up the feeling of a sour stomach. Alix didn’t answer his question until the bartender had set it down In front of her and head off again. She let a single claw emerge for just a second, tapping it against the soda glass as she lifted it. ”Coyote,” she breathed. ”I guess there’s meant to be some sort of irony in it for them. You have some around here, you know?” Coyotes weren’t native to the town but come the full moon there were enough out there with the wolves and every other sort of werecreature that called this town home. ”Have you figured out what he is yet?” The Dread Docs had a tendency to play around with things, not always just turning a plain old human into one thing or bolting a single trait on to their victims.

There was a time when Ric used to spend most of his nights drinking at the Grill but he hadn’t done that as much ever since he and Jenna got together. That was when everything had started to change, he had found a family with not just her but Elena and Jeremy as well and they had seemed like a silver lining after everything that he had gone through. It had come as a shock to learn that Isobel had chosen a life as a vampire over a life with him but he had well and truly moved on from her now and he knew that he didn’t want to look back. Life with Isobel had never been perfect and life in Mystic Falls wasn’t either but it was better than anything that he had ever known before. He had somewhere that he belonged now and he had people who counted on him so he knew that he was right where he needed to be. He hadn’t for one moment thought that Damon would end up becoming his best friend or that he would befriend a whole host of supernatural creatures but that was exactly what had happened and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. He had thought that he had lost everything after Isobel “died” and he had thrown himself into hunting so that he could avenge her but along the way he had come to realise that not all supernaturals were bad and the ones that he had met during his time in Mystic Falls had confirmed that. The Salvatore brothers weren’t bad and neither was Claire, not to mention there were plenty of kids that he taught at school that were supernatural as well. The town seemed to be riddled with them but Ric made a point of only going after the ones who deserved it and he would protect those that didn’t no matter what the cost and that included Matt now that he had apparently been turned into something new. That evening spending some time at the Grill had been to serve two purposes, it had been better to be around people rather than spend the evening in his apartment alone considering that Jenna was spending the evening with the kids and it had given him the chance to keep an eye on Matt as well. As it turned out it was a good thing that he was there since there was another hunter there keeping an eye on him that evening too and Ric knew that he wasn’t going to let anything bad happen to Matt. “Your reputation is different, by all accounts you’re one of the good ones.” He wasn’t sure whether or not that had changed since he had last heard mention of her name from another hunter but she hadn’t gone after Matt straight away so that was something that worked in her favour for the time being although he still knew better than to let his guard down. “I’m not most people,” Ric offered as he lifted his glass to his lips and took a sip. He was willing to trust Alix to an extent at the moment but he knew that he wasn’t going to start trusting her completely right off the bat. He did however want to hear what she had to say and as she ordered herself a drink it seemed like she was willing to tell him. For too long none of them had known what they were really up against in Mystic Falls and that needed to change. “Yep, I know,” Ric admitted. “How long ago did they do that to you?” he asked, not sure whether they had been moving around before they had arrived in Mystic Falls or what. Glancing over at Matt, Ric shook his head as Alix asked if he had figured out what the boy was yet. “Not yet. Whatever he is it isn’t something I’ve come across before.”ALIX QUINN

Over a year out of the game had left her soft. That was what Ralphy had told her when that first call had come from him at least. In a motel room in San Francisco, she’d listened to his crooning voice on the phone, laughing over the fact that she’d managed to go eighteen months without a single hunt. Alix raked her tongue over her lower lip as she thought of it, that queasy feeling in the pit of her stomach. She hadn’t gone soft, not physically. In fact it had been the opposite that way, physical exertion one of the easiest ways she’d found to quell those emotions that bubbled and burned and hated inside of her. Somehow Ralphy had known that and which buttons to push to get her mad and scared enough to cave to what he was asking. Back out on the road she’d tried to prove that she hadn’t grown metaphorically flabby but the longer she went pulling away form him now the more certain she was that she had lost her touch. The Alix Quinn she’d always wanted to be was strong enough to stand up to her family’s way of doing things, to save the lives of people like her who’d been turned into things against their will and were still trying to avoid being monsters, not simply slaughter them wholesale.
She was willing to lay money on the fact that Matt hadn’t asked for it, even if he was neck deep in the supernatural here in town. You never asked to lose chunks of your memories or suddenly find yourself capable of horrific violence. Alix curled her fingers into her palms, feeling the bite of her blunt human nails against them. Ric’s words had her chuckling as she unfolded them again. ”I guess I should be flattered to think people talk about me in those terms.” They were wrong though. She’d done some things under Ralphy’s orders that would never be near the word good. Sometimes she’d fought against those orders and saved lives but more had died because she hadn’t questioned things enough. Her eyes had drifted to the rows of bottles behind the bar, focusing on something a million miles beyond them as her chuckle had trailed off but Ric’s admission that he wasn’t most people had her looking back at him. ”It’s a good thing for all of us that you’re not,” she admitted hoarsely. It meant that maybe opening a little more wasn’t going to bring Ric and every other hunter in this town down on her.
This wasn’t like ripping off a band aid. Each time she revealed the other side of herself something inside of her cringed, waiting for that death blow to come. Chances were it wouldn’t right here in the Grill but given what she was capable of herself she knew it would be an easy matter for someone else to arrange something similar with her as the victim. Alix rubbed her fingertip up and down the cold side of the glass as she took a shaky sip. As she swallowed, she glanced sideways at Ric. ”Six years ago, give or take,” she rasped. ”I got taken from somewhere, same as others I’ve come across. Same as Matt from what I’ve heard.” Unlike those others her own uncle had been the one arranging to do the snatching. Watching Matt in the mirror, Alix sipped her coke slowly, green eyes tracking his movements. ”What can he do? Is it tied in to the moon?” It could’ve been one of a hundred things but there were ways to narrow it down, bestiaries to check, long half-forgotten stories to pore through in her head.

Ric had thought that he had known what he was letting himself in for when he moved to Mystic Falls but the truth was that he hadn’t known half of it. When he moved to town it had been with the sole purpose of tracking down the vampire that was responsible for killing Isobel and taking his life. He had come close to it but in the end Damon had been the one to kill him although thankfully he was completely unaware of the nature of the ring that Isobel had given him. Now Damon was his best friend and things had moved on so much since he first arrived in town. Ric hadn’t thought that he would find half of what he had done while he was in town, he had found a group of friends like he’d never had before, he had found a woman he loved and he had found a family. Ric hadn’t even known that he was looking for any of those things when he got to town but now he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. He could have gone back to his parents’ house after Isobel left and he had thought about it but if he had then he knew that things never would have worked out this way and he knew that he wouldn’t change this for anything in the world. He was doing his best to protect Mystic Falls and its residents but now he had so many people that he knew on a personal level that he wanted to keep safe and it made what he was doing that much more important. A lot of them hadn’t been asked to be dragged into the supernatural world just like he hadn’t but they had been pulled into it anyway and Ric was doing everything he could to make sure that it didn’t swallow them whole. Matt had been taken and had been missing for a week before he turned up and ever since then he had been different. Ric had been keeping an eye on him as best he could and he had hoped that the boy wouldn’t end up catching the attention of any other hunters but he had always known that it was a possibility and now it had actually happened. “You should,” he nodded. “We all do things we’re not proud of but underneath it all we’re still good people.” Ric knew that he had definitely done some things that he wasn’t proud of and from what he had heard Alix had done some things that weren’t good either but it seemed like she was trying to make that right and that counted for a lot as far as Ric was concerned. As Alix said it was a good thing that he wasn’t most people, Ric felt a half smile tug at the corner of his mouth. “I’ve learned to be a lot more open minded over the last few years,” he shrugged as he took another sip of his drink. There were plenty of hunters out there who thought that anyone who was deserved needed to be killed but that wasn’t him and he had definitely met enough people who were a part of that world to make him feel differently. Learning that Alix was a werecreature herself was a surprise but it definitely made a lot of sense. “That sounds like exactly what happened to Matt,” he nodded. Who was behind it he had no idea but he was determined to find out. As Alix asked if what had happened to Matt was tied to the moon, Ric shook his head. “It doesn’t seem to be. He is a football player so he has always been quick on his feet but now he seems so much more agile and he has become a pretty good fighter,” he explained. All of that could be put down to practice and training but there was something that told him that there was more to it than that. ALIX QUINN

The laugh that rolled out of her at Ric’s attempts to reassure her that she wasn’t a monster was tinged with sadness and bitterness. He knew her family’s reputation and maybe he could hear the truth in her promises that she wasn’t here to do what her family would’ve done to Matt but he didn’t know how much blood was already on her hands. She could see it though, Alix thought as she stared down at her curled fists. Derek had been able to see it, figuratively and literally when he’d come back to his apartment to find here there, glass shards from the bottles of laced alcohol she’d drunk glittering in her skin. He could see the stains of what her and her family had done on her like some sort of scarlet mark and he hadn’t been able to move past it. Good person now or not, there was no way to erase those scars from some people’s memories.
Alix swallowed hard as the laugh trailed off, her hands unfurling to reveal unmarked palms. Not even the red crescents of her nails. Nothing to show what she’d done or what she’d been through. Just that verbal hand on her shoulder from Ric and that tiny flicker of hope inside that maybe he wasn’t wrong about her after all. ”Can you still be good people if you know you’re going to do those things again at some point?” she asked hollowly. It wouldn’t matter that she didn’t want to then, only that Ralphy’s choke chain was still tight around her neck. One yank of Ralphy’s greedy fist and she wouldn’t have much choice in the matter.
All she could try for now was to keep Matt’s name off that list. He was a good kid, he didn’t deserve what might come. Others had been too and when it had come down to it she hadn’t been able to pull the trigger or drive claws or a blade into their heart. Maybe Ric hadn’t been that wrong about her after all. Green eyes drifted back to the man next to her as she planted an elbows on the bar next to her laptop and turned towards him. ”I guess we both had an awakening of sorts. Lucky us.” Some stayed snared in the lies, believing because that was all that they knew. Her thoughts drifted to her brothers, still back home with her parents. They all wore their own choke chains in a way she supposed and for now she had no way to get the free. For now being the operative words. Given what she’d learned of late Alix knew there was no way she could stay gone forever, she needed to go home at some point, needed to face up to Ralphy and her parents and take whatever punishment came her way.
Showing what she was to Ric could’ve risked her receiving that punishment now but it hadn’t come. Surprise maybe, relief maybe as he realised that she was even less likely to go after Matt now given that she was one of the things her parents would’ve hated. Sipping at her drink to steady the jumping nerves in her gut, Alix nodded as he confirmed that was like what had happened to Matt. ”It’s gonna be a familiar story for more and more people in town,” she confirmed with a grim tone to her voice. Alix pressed her lips together, nodding slowly. ”They like things that add strength, power … abilities. He’s faster, he’s a decent fighter, is there anything more to it than that?” Her eyes ticked up to Ric’s face as she shifted uneasily in her seat. Those things could’ve described almost any supernatural creature out there. Most were far harder to kill than people usually were, had heightened senses and the strength to throw a grown man across the room.

Ric knew what it was like to make mistakes, when he first arrived in Mystic Falls he had thought that all vampires were bad and he had tried to kill Damon. He had still been grieving the loss of his wife at that point and he hadn’t known that things would get better. It had taken Isobel compelling him to move on for him to really start living his life again and ever since then he had been doing his best to live his life to the full. He knew that he wasn’t perfect, he still made mistakes but he was doing his best by those around him and he knew that he really couldn’t do anything more than that. “I guess that depends on whether or not this time you’re doing those things for the right reason,” Ric shrugged. Sometimes they had to do bad things to protect the people they cared about and Ric knew that but he wasn’t sure whether Alix was thinking of that or something else entirely. “You’re right about that. It changes everything when you start seeing people for who they are rather than what they are,” Ric nodded. It had taken him a while to do that but he didn’t regret changing the way he saw the world at all. He had so many people in his life now that he wanted to keep safe and most of them were supernatural. That was something that wouldn’t have been possible at all a few years ago and he knew that he wouldn’t change the way things were now. He had befriended a lot of people he would have tried to kill back then and now he wouldn’t even dream of hurting them. He knew that that put him at odds with some other hunters but there were others that were learning to keep an open mind like he was and Ric was doing his best to help them with that. There were so many in town who were supernatural but were also kids and he knew that they didn’t deserve to lose their lives when what happened to them was probably completely out of their control. It was the same with the people around town who were being experimented on. None of them asked for any of this but they were thrown into the supernatural world and once that happened there was no going back from it. Matt was one of those people, Elena and the others had done their best to keep him in the dark about it thinking that it would keep him safe but he had been thrown into the thick of it anyway and now he was a part of that world himself. Ric had been keeping an eye on him ever since Damon found him in the woods, something had changed in Matt and Ric knew that he was supernatural but he didn’t know exactly what Matt was yet. Either way he knew that he wanted to make sure that nothing else happened to him and staying close to Matt was the best way he knew to do that. “Just when things seemed to be settling down around here,” Ric muttered. He knew that Alix was right, if Matt was taken then others would be too and it sounded like this had already been going on for a while. Who was responsible he didn’t know but he hoped that they would figure it out sooner or later. “It’s not just hand to hand combat, Damon said there was a sword of some kind nearby when he found Matt and suddenly he knew how to use that. He almost took Damon’s head off with it when he goaded him and he killed whatever attacked them.”ALIX QUINN

Alix stared down at the bar top, unsure if it was a question she could ask of herself, let alone answer yet. She wanted to break away from what her family had been doing, what Ralphy was forcing her to do, but she wasn’t sure if she was entirely capable of it yet. Knowing that the shackles were there was a far cry from being able to pick the lock on them. ”I think the jury’s still out on that,” Alix said hoarsely. She glanced up at Ric and then away again. Nothing was gonna change if she didn’t keep on trying. She’d buried her head in the sand before and all it had done was give Ralphy the leverage he’d needed to blackmail her.
Finding out that both her parents and uncle had killed their own blood had twisted everything she thought she’d known about her family. Before that she’d believed that they would kill her one day, but that had been all about what she had been turned into. God, how blind had she been. Alix made a low sound in her throat, feeling the knots continue to tighten in the pit of her stomach. The corners of her mouth twitched faintly. ”You ever wish you could go back to not knowing?” Some part of her had, but the world had given her no choice and there was no shoving that genie back in the bottle. The last couple of years had rolled over her with repeated hits, her balance thrown every time she was hit, every time something changed. Would it kill the universe to give her some time to steady herself again?
Asking questions like that in a town like this was probably asking for trouble. Karma wasn’t on her side as it was, the scales she’d been trying to balance still wildly out of whack. She wasn’t the only one who was risking that sucker punch from fate though. Alix chuckled wryly, shaking her head. ”That’s as bad as calling it quiet. There’s always gonna be something waiting in the shadows, especially here. There’s a reason why people are drawn here.” And that draw wasn’t just for people looking to live here peacefully. There was always something lurking behind them waiting to tear their lives apart and right now that was the Dread Doctors.
They’d left a trail of broken experiments in their wake before, but in the handful of years since they’d turned her, it seemed as though they’d fixed all those niggly little problems. Matt was just like her, it seemed, a human twisted into something else, maybe more than one thing. ”A kitsune,” Alix said hoarsely. She slipped off of her stool, gathering her things together. ”They’re the only thing I know that tends to use a sword these days. They’re fox shifters in a way. You wanna find out more about it, start researching Asia. Most of the literature comes from there. What kind, I couldn’t tell you, but anger’s not usually a part of it – not the same way it is with other shifters. If you need any help digging into it, or with him, call me.” She dug a card out of her pocket – just a number printed on the front of it. Alix offered it to Ric, he probably could’ve found her anyway, but it was easier this way.
