Lately Dec had been unable to shake the feeling that sooner rather than later his life was going to change and the truth was that scared him. His senior year had already started and it wouldn’t be long before he was due to graduate. He already knew that he wanted to go on to college and make something of his life after that but he also knew that Laney wanted to travel and he wasn’t sure that he could stand being parted from his twin. He knew that they were each their own person but at the end of the day they had always been close and the only person they had always been able to rely on was each other so the idea of not having him around worried him. For as long as he could remember he had done his best to keep Laney out of harm’s way and even though he knew that she was more than old enough to look after herself he still couldn’t help but feel protective of her. The run in with the hunter a few months ago had reinforced that feeling within him, the two of them had almost died when a hunter had decided to target the two of them because of what they were and didn’t care that they had never taken a life and if it hadn’t been for Ben stepping in to help them then he knew that they both would have died that day. Mystic Falls was a dangerous place but it was still one that he couldn’t stand to leave just yet although he knew that Laney couldn’t wait to see more of the world. She had always been the more adventurous of the two of them while he had always been the more academically minded and he had no idea what the future was going to hold for them but it was something that he knew they would have to figure out at some point. For now he knew that he just wanted to make it through the rest of his senior year in one piece and enjoy it for as long as possible. For Dec that meant making sure that he was on top of his school work and still staying active and with the former all caught up he was left with some free time on his hands. He knew that he could have called one of his friends to see if they were free to hang out or he could have headed into town to try and get a little Christmas shopping done but instead he decided to head out on a run to clear his head first. He had found out a long time ago that heading out along one of the many trails through the woods or out by the Falls or Quarry was the best way of doing that so after slipping on his shoes and putting in his earphones he closed the door behind him before heading out. The house wasn’t too far from the woods which always came in handy during a full moon so within the space of a few minutes he was passing under the familiar trees near his house and heading deeper into the woods that were like a second home to him, tuning out anything and everything that was going on in the world around him as he ran. There was no way she was going to be able to keep this up. Eventually Derek’s constant questions, her own lies that were already threatening to trip her up, or Ralphy’s never ending stream of jobs was going to become the straw that broke the camels back. Alix knew she’d been an inch away from shattering when Derek had turned in the street and she’d realised that he’d been the one Ralphy had sent her to kill. In the hours afterwards, when she’d convinced him to take her back to his place and had distracted him til both of them were too exhausted to do much but sleep, her stomach had churned relentless. In the end it had loosened her tongue, the appearance of the kid, Stiles, in Derek’s bedroom inciting her to admit to her family’s devotion to killing those they believed deserved it. She hadn’t been able to look at herself in Derek’s bathroom mirror afterwards, spending more hours than not avoiding him since. Ralphy had to have figured out what was going on by now. That hadn’t stopped him from sending more jobs her way though, every single one of them deserving what she did to put them out of their misery. It helped in a way, but still, she’d known that another of those jobs that would tear her apart inside would come up eventually. Her uncle was enjoying this too much not to torture her a little. Alix also wasn’t going to put him putting someone else on Derek’s tail past him. The danger hadn’t passed there, it wouldn’t do until she could pick apart what was happening and stop it at the source.
She’d been trying to do it that morning, hunched over her laptop in the window seat of her apartment. Her gaze had cut to Derek’s building every couple of minutes, watching out for the sort of danger the former werewolf-current shapeshifter might not see coming. Green eyes had been on his distant apartment window when her phone had heralded another message from Ralphy. A smiley face, of course he’d lead with that before suggesting that she take up running over the next couple of days, see if she couldn’t find herself someone out in the woods with a bounty on their head. She’d been given another vague description, the guy’s running shoes the distinct factor here. Alix felt her heart lodge itself in her throat as she rose woodenly. The last three had all been guilty of murder, this one had to be the same, or that straw would start taking on the weight of an anvil. Almost woodenly she’d dressed in shorts, a sports bra beneath a vest that left her arms as bare as he legs. The small pack on her back held one of her cameras … and a gun. Wolfsbane laced bullets, necessary for the job so Ralphy had said. The gun was strapped in tight but still Alix could feel it thumping against her ribs as she took off on one of the trails, hitting in time with the prayers she shot off that she wouldn’t find this guy today. Luck had never been on her side though, before she was more than a mile down a trail, she saw him flashing through the trees ahead of her. The pack was off of her back in an instant, the gun retrieved, hidden at her side as she arrowed in on him. He was there then, flashing across her field of vision as she raised her gun at him. ”Christ, you’re just a kid…” Alix’s breath erupted out of her throat like fire, her body almost jack-knifing as she looked up at him in horror. ”What the hell are you doing out here? What’ve you done?” That was the important question but if the answer was nothing then this good was going to be just as shocked as she was herself. Ralphy had to be playing with her, like a cat with a mouse, just batting her around until he was ready to tear her to pieces and swallow what was left.

Dec had always been pretty good when it came to school but this year he was nervous. It was his senior year and he already knew that he wanted to go on to college after graduation but he wasn’t sure what Laney or Tom were going to do. He hoped that they would decide to join him at college but he didn’t know for sure. He knew that Laney wanted to travel, she had made that crystal clear the last time that they had talked about it, and he knew that if she wanted him to then he would go with her for a while but he also knew that he wanted to make sure that he had as many qualifications under his belt as possible before he tried to launch himself into a career. He still wasn’t too sure what he wanted to do as far as that went but he knew that in time he would figure it out. For now he wanted to make the most of his senior year and that meant throwing himself into his studies, basketball and spending as much time with his friends as he could before they potentially went their separate ways after graduation. He knew that it was natural for people to start drifting apart when they no longer had high school to hold them together but he knew that he didn’t want that to happen this time if he could help it. Whitmore College was close by so Dec had been considering applying there so that he could stay close to his family when the time came and it was something that had been appealing to him more and more lately. For the moment he knew that he just needed to clear his head and get a little more training in before basketball tryouts so going for a run had seemed like the perfect way of doing both of those things. He had thought about seeing if Laney or one of his friends wanted to join him but he felt like being alone, at least for a little while, so he decided against it. Having grown up in Mystic Falls and experienced his first full moon transformation a few years ago Dec knew the woods like the back of his hand. He knew that it was important to be careful while he was out there, after all when he and Laney had decided to let loose and have some fun with their abilities not too long ago they had found themselves on the wrong end of a hunter’s gun and had it not been for Ben showing up when he did, Dec knew that neither of them would be alive now. He knew that not all hunters were bad, Ben was proof of that, but there were always going to be those who just wanted to kill as many creatures as possible regardless of whether they had actually hurt anyone or not and Dec knew better than to let his guard down and risk drawing attention to himself again. It was easy to lose himself in his run and the music, moving at the same steady pace that he had before his first transformation but the sight of another person pointing a gun at him was enough to snap him out of that and he stopped dead in his tracks, pulling his earphones from his ears as he did so and holding his hands up in a gesture to show that he didn’t want any trouble. “I just came out here for a run, I haven’t done anything,” he said, doing his best to keep the panic from reaching his voice. He knew that if he panicked and gave away what he was then the woman before him would also panic and that wouldn’t end well for him, not when she was the one holding the gun. He knew his abilities and there was a chance that he might be able to disarm her but he didn’t want anyone he didn’t know figuring out what he was if he could help it and he refused to kill her the way others might so he knew that he had to try and reason with her instead. “I have no idea who you are but please, will you lower your gun?” he asked, his heart thundering in his chest as he spoke. From the moment she’d found out how brutal and unethical her family’s hunts were Alix had known this moment was coming. Her parents had never particularly cared if a kid changing on his first full moon was only a danger to himself or if the forty year old vampire third grade teacher was only feeding on rabbits. That didn’t matter, they were monstrous all the same and in the eyes of her parents and Ralphy, they all deserved to die. It hadn’t sat right with her then and it had only grown worse after she’d woken up in that high school and realized she’d been changed herself. Pretty rapidly Alix had realized what it was like to live on the other side, to try and do every right, to stop yourself from hurting people and still end up being hunted all the same. The only thing keeping her safe now was the fact that she was keeping Ralphy’s pockets full. The moment that stopped, and God she’d wanted to make it stop, her parents were going to be turned in her direction and then she’d be the hunted not the hunter. Even with that threat hanging over her head Alix had found it tempting lately to break free. More than once since she’d first met Derek she’d been prepared to turn down jobs but Ralphy had played dirty. He’d targeted Derek on purpose, somehow knowing something was going on between them, twisting her arm to continue working for him just that much longer. Ralphy had taken it easy on her, making it absolutely clear just how much every target deserved what they were getting but Alix had known that eventually Ralphy’s ethics would outweigh her own.
That time was now. Staring at the kid she’d been chasing into the woods, Alix felt her gorge rising. Surely there had been teenagers who’d killed before, who hadn’t been able to handle what they’d become, or who’d been turned into something absolutely monstrous but they were few and far between. The kid stopping dead in front of her, throwing his hands up to ward her off. Alix’s finger twitched, far too close to pulling the trigger, before she snapped it away, wrapping it white knuckled around the trigger guard as she stared at him in horror. There was a buzz in the air, a whine that almost drowned out the kid’s words as he said he was just out here for a run, that he hadn’t done anything. He’d misunderstood her question and not in the sort of way that she’d seen monsters do, pasting on that mask of innocence even as she’d caught them doing something horrendous. ”You’ve done something,” she promised him with a near hysterical burst of laughter. ”Believe me kid, people like me don’t come to do things like … this … for no reason.” Alix lifted the muzzle of her weapon a half inch, gestured with it. Innocent human kids didn’t end up on Ralphy’s list, even her uncle wouldn’t go that far. She let out a shaky breath as he began to speak again, wanting to do nothing more than take off for the woods, living the kid alive. For this she’d take the punishment, the cruelties that she knew would come next. ”They didn’t tell me who you were either. Just a description and the instructions to …” Alix looked down at her weapon as he asked her to lower the gun, swallowing hard at the sight of it. Knowing she could get it back up if she needed to, Alix dropped it to her side, still staring at him with guarded eyes. ”Who are you kid? And I don’t just mean your name. What are you?” Something obviously. Someone whose name had gotten to Ralphy somehow.

For a long time everything that Dec had known about the supernatural world that he had been born into had come from snippets of different conversations that he’d had with his parents. After his oldest brother turned for the first time there had never been any question that one day he and Laney would follow suit but they had been lucky enough to be born into a family that knew exactly what they were and how to live with it. All his family had ever wanted was to have the chance to live their lives in peace and it had been that way ever since their ancestors had moved to Mystic Falls all those years ago. They could have left and started over somewhere else but Mystic Falls was their home and Dec knew that his parents had been determined not to let anything chase them out of their home. The first encounter he and Laney had had with a hunter who had tried to kill them had shocked all of them to the core but they had all made a promise that they were going to be more careful and Dec had been doing his best not to give anyone any reason to think that he was anything other than an ordinary teenager. There were those in town who knew the truth about him like Scott and Ben but at the end of the day he knew that he could trust them to keep his secret the same way that they could trust him to keep theirs. Had it not been for Ben showing up that day then Dec knew that he and Laney would have become the latest victims of that hunter who hadn’t seemed to care whether or not the people he hunted were actually hurting others and Dec knew that every day that he had was a blessing. Getting through his senior year at high school wasn’t easy but it helped having people around who knew what he was and what he was going through and he knew that he could lean on them whenever he needed to. He hated lying to the rest of his friends, especially those he had grown up with, but he knew that he couldn’t risk dragging them into his world. If they knew the truth then it would mean that they would have targets painted on their backs too and he refused to put them in that position. Instead he was doing his best to keep things in his life as normal as possible and that was one of the reasons why he had decided to go for a run that day. He knew that he needed to clear his head and since it meant that he could work on his fitness as well then he knew that it would mean killing two birds with one stone. Dec knew that he had advantages that others at school didn’t have, after all being a weretiger meant that he was faster and stronger than others his age and his senses were heightened too but he refused to let himself become complacent. Before he turned for the first time he had always enjoyed running and that was something that he knew that he wanted to hold on to. He hadn’t expected to end up with a woman pointing a gun at him but he knew that he hadn’t done anything wrong so he hoped that he could talk her around. For the first hunter he had come across just being a weretiger had been enough to get him killed but Dec knew from Ben that not all hunters were like that and the way the woman seemed to hesitate was enough to give him hope that she could be reasoned with. “You might not but some do. You aren’t the first person this year to point a gun at me but I swear to you that I haven’t done anything,” he assured her. He knew that there was a way he could prove that to her but he knew that it was a last resort. As she spoke again, however, it was clear that she knew that he wasn’t a regular teenager and even though she had lowered her weapon, something that caused a small sense of relief to flood through him, he knew that he wasn’t out of danger yet and if he was going to live to see another day then he was going to have to do everything that he could in order to convince her. “My name is Declan and I’m a weretiger but I meant it when I said that I haven’t done anything. I’ve never hurt anyone,” he said, letting his eyes flash gold to prove it. He still had Ben that he could call on if he needed to but he hoped it wouldn’t come to that. ALIX QUINN

Alix’s stomach was turning itself inside out, threatening to leave what she’d managed to managed to eat almost mechanically that morning spread all over the cold ground. Ever since she’d come to Mystic Falls, ever since she’d managed to get herself entangled with Derek, things with Ralphy had started to fall apart. A part of her had wanted that from the very start, had been desperate to tear herself from him like an animal chewing off its own leg to get out of a trap. She’d just never wanted it to be this way. Walking away from Derek had felt like an impossibility, like she was somehow just as trapped with him as she was with Ralphy. Only with Derek it was like orbiting the sun, beautiful but just as likely to swallow you whole eventually. And she’d gotten herself burnt there, was definitely already scorched around the edges when she’d found herself face to face with this kid. Ralphy hadn’t eased up on her after she’d eased herself back from Derek and had taken those first couple of kills without argument. He’d merely been luring her into another false sense of security and like an idiot, she hadn’t noticed. That desperation to break away, to find some way to get out of Ralphy’s hold on her, was stronger now, almost burning her from the inside out but even in this current frantic state, Alix knew that she had no chance of doing that and surviving. If she stopped responding to his calls or put her foot down Ralphy would go straight to her parents and the next gun she would see would be aimed at her own head. Her dad would’ve said he was doing it for her own good and the worst part was, he honestly would’ve believed that. Seth Quinn wouldn’t have blinked an eye if he thought he was putting his monster of a daughter out of her misery.
She wasn’t her father, never had been, and so the thought of slaughtering this seemingly innocent kid in front of her was practically tearing a hole right through the middle of her. Her dad would’ve said this was her not seeing beneath the surface to the monster beneath, being deceived by the wolf in sheep’s clothing so to speak but Alix trusted her gut and right now it was screaming not to pull that trigger. Her laughter dried up in her throat as the kid’s words made it feel like it was constricting shut. ”The ones who do this for no reason don’t wait to shoot,” she told him with painful honesty in her voice. Had her dad or brothers been standing here, he wouldn’t have had a chance to explain, he’d be dead. Alix’s mouth twisted almost painfully on one corner. ”Did he give you the same chance to say that?” More importantly, had they believed him when he cried innocence then? Weretiger. That was enough of a reason to end up on Ralphy’s list. It didn’t matter that this particular tiger didn’t even look like he was out of high school or the colour of the eyes that he flashed. Alix let out an explosive breath, tucking her gun further out of sight behind a knee that was beginning to shake violently with the adrenalin rushing through her system. ”You might be innocent now Declan but someone sure as hell didn’t think you deserved to keep walking around. Who was the last person who held a gun on your Declan?” Had Ralphy already made an attempt on this boy’s life or was it a hunter who’d been denied his prey who had arranged for this kid to be marked for death? If it was the latter then Ralphy would be bragging about this forever, getting something done that someone else had absolutely failed at.

There were so many people around Mystic Falls who were immersed in the supernatural world, more than Dec had even thought possible while he was growing up, but deep down he knew that was a good thing. The more people who knew what he was would always be a risk but at the end of the day it was a relief knowing that there were people around that he could talk to when he needed to. He had always had his family around him while he was growing up and he knew that they would always be there for him the same way they had for each of his siblings as they started shifting but there were certain things that he wasn’t ready to talk to his family about, especially the fact that he and Laney had almost been killed by a hunter not that long ago. If their parents and siblings knew what had happened then it would only cause panic and that was the last thing that any of them needed. He and Laney had made a pact not to tell their family and that was something that he wanted to stick to. They were all happy in Mystic Falls, the town was their home and if they knew the truth then he knew that their parents would move them all away as quickly as they could and that was the last thing that he wanted. His family wasn’t like some of the others who were caught up in the supernatural world in Mystic Falls, they wanted nothing more than to live their lives in peace and they certainly hadn’t hurt anyone. One of the advantages of coming from a long line of werecreatures was that he had family who had gone through exactly the same thing that he was going through now and they could support him and help him keep his tiger side under control whenever the moon was full. It had taken him a while to find an anchor but he had managed it with the help of his parents and he knew that he wasn’t going to let that control slip, he couldn’t afford to. Had it not been for Ben then he knew that he wouldn’t have made it through his first encounter with the hunter and that was something that he was constantly aware of. Back then he and Laney had been letting loose with their abilities for the first time in a long time and even though they had been careful to make sure that there wasn’t anyone else around they clearly hadn’t been careful enough so it was fortunate that Ben had been in the area and had seen what was happening as well. That day was a completely different story, Dec had simply wanted to go for a run to clear his mind and he had been making sure to go at a normal pace in case anyone else was around. He didn’t want any trouble but it seemed that it had found him anyway and this time there wasn’t anyone around to help him that he could see so he knew that he was going to have to try and talk this hunter down. Straight away he had seen the hesitation written all over his face, she seemed surprised by something, perhaps his age, and he hoped that she would believe him. “Believe me, I know. I still remember the bullet I took to the shoulder,” he admitted before shaking his head. “No, he didn’t. He wasn’t interested; all he wanted was another kill to add to his list and if Ben hadn’t stepped in he would have succeeded.” He knew that the man’s face was something that he would never forget and he honestly hoped that they wouldn’t cross paths again. “I don’t know his actual name but he went by Creedy. At least that was what my friend called him,” he explained. He knew that at the moment he was just buying himself some time by answering the woman’s questions but the fact that she was even asking them gave him the impression that she was having second thoughts about killing him so he knew that he had to continue giving her a reason to doubt what she had set out to do. He knew that he could have rushed her now that she had lowered her gun but that would only give her more of a reason to shoot and he knew better than to do that. ALIX QUINN

Run! Alix wasn’t so sure that her legs would hold her at this point but the desperation to just get out of these woods was there in every twitch of her muscles. It wasn’t just a need to get out of these woods, although that would be a good start and would absolutely save this kid’s life today, it was a need to start running and never stop. In the end she would have to, even her body couldn’t keep it up, but she was sure she could go for maybe a year or two before her parents would find her in the end. At her dad’s side she’d seen how people failed in keeping themselves off the grid, in the end the need to kill would wise, or returning to an old pattern would put someone back on the radar. Alix knew that she knew better than that, there were things she would miss, people, Derek, this damn town, but it was better to be heart sick than to be forced to do this any longer. It was better to cut herself off from her family and all of the rest of them if it meant that her presence here was no longer killing people. If Ralphy was this desperate for money then he could come here himself or offer some other idiot a deal they wouldn’t be able to refuse. Either way it would buy everybody here time and if she called the whistle on it all before she ran, maybe Derek and his friends - Alpha Scott, banshee Lydia, witch Bonnie and … rage inducing Stiles – would find some way to stop this for good. She couldn’t stomach the thought of her parents being slaughtered here any more than she could the thought of killing Derek or this kid but Ralphy … he deserved an end like this more than almost any of the people she’d killed for him since he’d made that first phone call and set her on this path.
It all had to end sometime, had to end here. The muscles in Alix’s arm were twitching as hard as the ones in her leg but on the trigger guard her finger was deathly still. She’d trained hard enough with her family to have that much control, to know not to squeeze the trigger unless she absolutely meant it. Green eyes dropped to the kid’s shoulder as if the wound would still be there. There was no sign of it on the skin she could see, that could mean were creature of some sort or vampire. Her gaze dropped to his hands, no ring, not a vampire then. ”You were lucky,” she told him honestly. Had it been her dad, it wouldn’t have missed. Third time might not be the charm for the boy, his two near misses already more luck than some ever got. Alix shook her head, swallowing back bile. ”He didn’t care,” she agreed. Her red brows drew together before she could comment on the hunter further. ”Ben? Ben Winchester? He was the one who saved you?” It would be just like the teenager to do so, his brand of hunting as ethical as her own had once been. She didn’t recognize the name that the boy gave but there were plenty of hunters out there who hadn’t crossed paths with her or her parents. Alix shook her head, shifting her weight as she momentarily fought the urge to shove the gun back into her bag. ”I don’t know him but there are plenty of hunters around here I don’t. A town like this is going to draw people to it who want to get rid of those of … your kind … who don’t care so much about other people’s lives. I don’t know if one of them put you on the list but someone has and trust me kid, you want to find out why.” Because her not shooting today wasn’t going to keep safe in the way that she hoped her cutting ties with Derek would keep him safe.

Dec had always known that he would follow in the footsteps of his parents and his older siblings and become a weretiger but if he was honest there were times when he wondered what it would be like to be from a normal family without having to worry about hunters all the time. He still hadn’t told his parents or his older siblings what had happened the day that he and Laney had ended up having a little fun with their abilities because he knew that it would only worry them but the memory was always there at the back of his mind. He and Laney had come so close to dying that day and staring down the barrel of a gun was somewhere that Dec had never wanted to find himself doing again. Now he was more careful with his abilities than ever, not giving anyone any reason to think that he was anything other than an ordinary teenager like so many others in Mystic Falls, and yet apparently that still wasn’t enough. He had been fortunate enough to have had Ben around that first day to vouch for the two of them and he knew that without the other boy fighting their corner then he and Laney wouldn’t have made it out of there alive but this time Dec knew that he wasn’t going to get that lucky again. The only way he was going to be able to get out of this one was if he could convince this woman that he really didn’t mean anyone any harm but from what he had seen of the first hunter he had come across that might end up being a lot easier said than done. This woman at least seemed more reasonable than the last hunter but Dec knew better than to let his guard down completely. She had lowered her gun but it was still in her hand and Dec knew that it would be easy enough for her to change her mind and shoot him. She seemed to have more of a purpose than the last hunter he had crossed paths with who had simply wanted to add another kill to his list and that scared him but he knew that rushing her and trying to disarm her wouldn’t do any good because she would be able to get a shot off before he even got close enough to her to do anything about it. Instead he had to be smart and that meant trying to appeal to her humanity. She had hesitated when she had realised who he was and he knew that he had to hope that that was something that he would be able to use to his advantage. “I’m not sure I’d go that far, the fact that I was in a tree meant that he couldn’t get a clean shot off but as soon as I was on the ground he used the wound to inflict as much pain as he could,” Dec said, shuddering at the memory. A bullet laced with wolfsbane had been bad enough but the hunter had been determined to draw it out as much as he could. Dec was surprised when the woman recognised Ben’s name and he nodded. “That’s right. He said he has been keeping an eye on the supernatural since he moved to town and he knows I’m just trying to live my life,” he explained, knowing that the last thing he wanted to do was to mention his family and put them in the same danger that he was currently in. “Creedy didn’t care about that but Ben still managed to get him to leave.” Not a day went by when he wasn’t grateful to his friend for that, Ben had stuck his neck out on the line for them and Dec knew better than to make him regret that. “That’s what you’re doing, working your way through a list that someone gave you?” he asked, trying to make sense of it all. “I’ll find out what I can but I’ve been lying low so I have no idea how I ended up on there,” he added honestly, knowing that he had to hope that the rest of his family weren’t on that same list although something told him that this woman would have mentioned something if they were. Her family were the exception to the rule when it came to hunting, that was something that Alix had tried to convince herself of in the last couple of years. Most weren’t entirely indiscriminate about who they chose to kill, only tracking down the things actively killing at that time, not going out of their way to find supernatural creatures trying to live in peace. Most, if they were lucky, didn’t come across those hiding out in the world, if they did then at the very least conscience would stop them from wholesale slaughter. When it came to the Quinns those same scruples didn’t exist. Right back to Thaddeus Quinn the family had been of the opinion that it was better to kill them before they had a chance to kill you. Everything would become a problem in time and so they were just being proactive. The better part of her knew that it wasn’t true, that plenty had gone their whole lives transforming without killing, being turned without having to slaughter another human being to slake their first, but standing in front of this kid, having come within a hair’s breadth of killing two people she shouldn’t in as many weeks, Alix wondered whether they’d had it right all along. The teenaged boy didn’t deserve this, not from what she could see, but did she deserve it? She’d come so close to killing Derek, someone who actually meant something to her. If he’d been a second slower in turning that day she’d have pulled that trigger and blown out her own heart in the process. Maybe a part of it had been destroyed in the near miss, another part slowly dying now as the kid tried to talk his way out of being shot.
All it would’ve gotten any of them was money in Ralphy’s pocket. It was all about lining it and that made the whole thing a thousand times worse. The hunter who’d found this kid last time had seemed to be doing things just to get another kill but he hadn’t been making money off of it. Still, the kid’s story had her stomach churning harder even as he shuddered his way through it. Bloodless lips pressed together as Alix’s shoulders slumped further. ”That’s the sort of hunter that gives them all a bad name,” she managed hoarsely. Even if the kid had given him a reason torture wasn’t necessary. Some didn’t care about that though, they wanted to inflict the pain they were feeling on to everybody else. As a wolf the kid was able to heal the physical wounds afterwards but the mental scars had a way of clinging on. Ben undoubtedly would have remembered all of it, could’ve told her every detail of it. The kid seemed surprised when she recognised the name. Was it because he couldn’t imagine good hearted Ben associating with someone like her? A huff of humour rasped out of her. ”That sounds like the Ben I know,” she admitted. ”I don’t want to hurt anybody just for doing that. I’m no Creedy kid, I can promise you that.” She was more like Ben, although she didn’t know if she could’ve let a hunter like this Creedy guy get a look at her and just walk away. Her parents had a reputation, one that might lead someone right back to them if they had word of the youngest Quinn child. Alix’s hand tightened on the gun as the kid questioned her on what she was doing. ”There’s a list, I’ll tell you that much. Someone wanted you dead kid and like I said, usually there’s a reason for it. Maybe it was Creedy who put your name on it, either way you need to be careful.” She’d already been terrified that Ralphy would send someone to do what she couldn’t, now it was doubly concerning. Alix swallowed as she lifted her t-shirt with one hand and shoved the gun into her waistband, having thumbed on the safety with the other. ”What is your name?” Ralphy hadn’t even bothered with that, just giving her the kid’s description and telling her about those sneakers.

Dec knew that the supernatural population in Mystic Falls was a rather large one, at least it was if the reports of so called animal attacks were anything to go off of, but his family had never been like that. From what his parents had told him about the generations before them there had been members of the family that had ended up getting on the wrong side of hunters to the point where his family members had ended up being hunted for sport given that were-tigers weren’t exactly common but ever since then all his family had wanted was to be able to live their lives in peace. His parents didn’t want any trouble and Dec and his siblings didn’t either but some hunters just didn’t seem to care about that. In a way Dec could understand it, after all there were probably plenty of people out there who killed for fun and it couldn’t be easy to tell one from another. All he wanted to do right now was get through the rest of his senior year in one piece so that he could start thinking about college, though, and at the moment it seemed like someone or something was conspiring against him. Not only had he ended up getting used for target and torture practice by Creedy but he had also ended up getting on the wrong side of someone without even realising it which had resulted in Alix going after him. Dec still had no idea who might have it in for him but he knew that someone must do so he was going to have to tread much more carefully from now on. It was Ben that had saved him from Creedy but thankfully Alix seemed to be much more reasonable. He knew that he still needed to be on his guard, after all she was a hunter and not too long ago she had been pointing a gun at him ready to kill him, but she at least seemed able to be reasoned with. The last thing Dec wanted was to drag his family into the mess that he had found himself in so he knew better than to mention that they were like him or that they even knew what he was but there were certain details that he knew that he could divulge if he needed to so he just had to pick his moments. “Just like the werecreatures that kill give us all a bad name,” Dec offered. That wasn’t the life that he wanted and it wasn’t the kind of life that his family wanted either but so many people seemed to think that if one werecreature was a killer then they all had to be like that and Dec wanted nothing more than to prove them wrong. So far he had been fortunate enough not to have to worry about getting any innocent blood on his hands and he knew that he wanted it to stay that way. “I’m starting to see that,” he admitted, a smile working its way across his face as Alix said that she wasn’t like Creedy. If she had been then they wouldn’t still be talking right now and Dec was already starting to feel a little more at ease. As she said that there was a list and that his name was on it, however, Dec felt his heart start to race a little. “Who has access to this list?” he asked, already starting to worry that there might be other hunters on the way who wouldn’t be as understanding as Alix. Relief flooded through him when Alix finally put away her gun but he couldn’t deny that he was surprised when she asked for his name. “You were sent here to kill me but you weren’t even told my name?” he asked, his eyes widening in surprise as he looked over at her. “What were you told about me?” He knew that he could easily give her a fake name if he wanted to but he couldn’t guarantee that Ben or anyone else wouldn’t let his real name slip and he didn’t want to risk getting on the wrong side of Alix by lying to her now. “I’m Dec.”ALIX QUINN

The world was an unfair place, there was no denying that. Most people didn’t realise it immediately. They had their hand metaphorically slapped lots of times when they were young, unless they were incredibly indulged. People realized they couldn’t always get everything they wanted but it usually wasn’t until much later when they realized just how hard fate could hit. The sucker punch to the gut of losing a parent, a wife, a husband, a child. The upper-cut to the jaw at job loss or bankruptcy. The tearing out of the gut when a nightmare reared up in front of you and you found yourself becoming something you’d never been able to imagine. Sickness, loss, betrayal. Undoubtedly the kid was feeling the last now. Someone had put him on Ralphy’s list, had marked him for death. It could’ve been the hunter he’d just told her of, most wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow at the idea of putting a price on a kid. A monster was a monster. It didn’t matter if they’d been bitten against their will or they’d been born that way. Alix swallowed hard as she studied the kid in front of her. Young, so young. If he had been bitten then it was probably recently, but she wasn’t buying that. He hadn’t instantly come at her with teeth and claws, he hadn’t lashed out, making what would’ve been a failed attempt to put her down before she’d done the same to him. Some had before, not realizing that she was just as much a monster as some of them were. This one had displayed enough wisdom that she was ready to believe he’d been born into this. That made a difference, to her at least. Ralphy and her dad would’ve still said kill him, but just as the Quinns were taught to be hunters, to continue the family line, these kids were taught by the generations before them had to avoid trouble, how to avoid that slippery slope down towards violence and death. These kids didn’t deserve it.
Alix had known that the boy hadn’t the minute he’d started to talk to her. Had she shot from a distance this would’ve had such a different end. God. The knowledge stole her breath almost as much as realizing she was about to kill Derek had. As far as she knew neither one of them had done anything to get them marked but they’d ended up that way anyway. Alix’s throat worked, a faint bob of her head the first sign of her acknowledgement. ”There are bad apples wherever you look,” she admitted hoarsely. You just had to pick through the ones that were there to find ones that weren’t going to leave you doubled over, your life destroyed. Ben Winchester was one of the good ones, his dad and uncle too. John Winchester might’ve walked a thin line at times but his boys had moved further away from that and Ben was obviously still wanting to do good. Alix hoped someone could one day say the same for her. ”Not everybody can,” she admitted with a grim note to her voice. Coming clean to Derek had driven a wedge between them. His history with hunters colouring his opinion now. She should’ve come clean with him before but all it would’ve done was move the destruction up. Alix’s palm grew slippery on the butt of her gun as she shook her head at this kid. ”I wish I could tell you but I don’t know. There’s somebody else holding onto it sending me out. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was trying to make sure he was the only one.” But Ralphy wasn’t infallible, he was just greedy. She had to resist swiping her palm down her thighs as she put the gun away. One corner of Alix’s mouth kicked up a notch. ”I guess it’s considered need to know and I didn’t need to know it to put the bullet through your head.” Drawing in a breath, Alix gestured to the kid with a hand. ”Appearance, location and the fact that you’re a shifter of some kind. Alix.” She said her name on a sigh, actually scrubbing her hand down the front of her t-shirt before she stretched a hand out to him now.

The first time Dec had come across a hunter that had tried to kill him he and Amy had been letting loose in the woods using their abilities for the first time in a long time and it had almost been their last. Ever since then Dec had been more careful than ever not to let anyone outside of his family and the close friends that knew the truth figure out what he was. To anyone else he was just a normal kid who was good at basketball but it had been that way even before he turned for the first time since he had worked hard at it. Being a weretiger was a part of who he was but it didn’t define him and he hadn’t let it change who he was. Unlike a lot of people he had grown up knowing that one day he was going to turn into a white tiger during a full moon and it had been that way for the last few years. It still hurt now but thankfully not as much as it used to. Finding an anchor hadn’t been easy but he had managed it and he couldn’t deny that after turning during the full moon he often felt free. He managed to hold on to who he was rather than letting the tiger take over and he had never hurt anyone but a lot of hunters didn’t care about that. As far as they were concerned anyone who wasn’t human deserved to be killed and it had certainly been that way with the hunter that Ben had saved them from. Dec hadn’t wanted to run into any more hunters if he could help it but Alix had taken him by surprise and once again he had found himself staring down the barrel of a gun. He had managed to get out of it the first time thanks to Ben’s help but he knew better than to let himself believe that he would be lucky enough to end up getting his friend’s help again so he had known that he was on his own. Thankfully Alix seemed easier to reason with than the last hunter had been and she actually seemed to understand. “There are,” he agreed. “There are people out there like me that are killers but there are humans that are killers too. There is good and bad everywhere,” he added. He knew that it was true, he often heard stories about humans killing other humans and it was the same for people who were a part of the supernatural world. Too many people seemed happy to resort to killing but only people that weren’t human were often automatically assumed to be monsters and that wasn’t always the case. “Let me guess, there’s a reward on my head which is why whoever sent you out here would want to keep it to himself?” he asked as the pieces began to fall into place. He was pretty sure he already knew what the answer to that question was going to be but he still needed to hear it from Alix anyway. “That’s messed up,” Dec admitted as Alix said that even the names of the people on the list were need to know and she hadn’t needed to know. She had finally put the gun away, though, so at last Dec felt like he could begin to relax. “So whoever sent you knows my routine. I’ll remember that,” Dec said as he reached forward and shook Alix’s outstretched hand. “It’s good to meet you know you’re not pointing a gun at me,” he said, a half smile working its way across his face as his eyes met hers. For the Quinns there wasn’t a lot of grey when it came to the world. It all existed in black and white for them. You were human or monster, with nothing in between. They were aware of human criminals of course, of the evil that existed outside of the supernatural world, but her parents had always been very clear that they weren’t the family’s problem. Their area to police was the world of monsters and their job their was simple. Kill. Alix had never heard them question whether or not a creature was innocent or not, what they were was enough to condemn them instantly. In some way she’d always questioned that but it was only when the target had been put on her own back by the Dread Doctors that Alix had realized just how wrong they were. Had the kid felt his heart flutter like a trapped bird in his throat when she’d approached? Even with the added strength, her heightened senses, she’d felt that all too often. It threatened to choke you when you realized that the grim reaper was practically standing over your shoulder. Luckily the kid hadn’t given into his fear, he’d held his head up, had faced her with the sort of bravery she doubted she could’ve managed had the shoe been on the other foot at his age. She was years older physically, decades mentally and only getting older by the day here in Mystic Falls.
While Ralphy had plenty of targets here for here to deal with there really were others she should’ve been concentrating on. The town was a hot bed of supernatural violence but beneath that was a perfectly human problem just as bad. People like her were at the centre of it, Alix thought ruefully. Her throat was dry at the thought, her expression growing guarded as she nodded at him. ”Especially in places like this,” she managed hoarsely. Running away herself might’ve saved the lives she was forced to take but no matter how many she killed she’d never become the biggest problem in this town. Ralphy could always replace her, come here himself to kill Derek and deal with those she’d let go. Telling the kid he was marked for death was horrific but it would be worse for him not to know. At least if he’d been warned he could watch his back, keep himself and his sister safe. Alix lifted her hand once she put her gun away, tunneling her fingers back through her hair before she gave a single curt nod. ”There is and you’re not the only one marked. I don’t think the one collecting the money is the one doing the marking in the first place. Do you know anybody other than those hunters who’d want you dead?” There probably wasn’t a reason for it other than the fact that the kid was a shifter but if he could identify a pattern it would make this easier. The corner of Alix’s mouth kicked up in a bitter grin as the kid said this was messed up. ”Welcome to my life,” she managed dryly. It was done to stop her investigating too far, to stop her realizing that she was targeting those she knew, those she liked here. Green eyes narrowed as she breathed deeply, studying the woods around them before the kid shook her hand. Alix flashed him a genuine grin this time. ”It’s good to meet you too. Do me a favour kid, change up your routine? Don’t make this easy if they try again.” And it would be they because she was done with this kid. He hadn’t done anything to warrant being hunted and she was beginning to draw a line here.

Dec really hadn’t thought anything of it when he’d headed out on his usual run. It was something that he always did this time of the day and he had done for a while but he hadn’t known that that would be used against him. He hadn’t come across any hunters other than Ben since he had sent the other guy packing and Dec had hoped that that would be the end of it but as it turned out he couldn’t have been more wrong. For the second time in a year he’d found himself staring down the barrel of a gun with no way of fighting his way out of it and he knew that he never wanted to find himself in that situation again. Mystic Falls was a dangerous place, that was something that he had always known given what his family were, but they had done pretty well at flying under the radar for generations and he hadn’t done anything to go against that aside from letting loose and having a bit of fun with his abilities with Amy while the two of them were alone in the woods but he knew that that shouldn’t have been enough to draw this level of attention from hunters. The first had just wanted two more kills to add to his long list regardless of whether or not he and Amy had actually hurt anyone but Alix seemed different. She had at least been willing to listen and she had seemed to have second thoughts when she had realised how young he was. That was something that he had been able to use to his advantage and now he knew that he needed to find out as much from her as he could to make sure that this didn’t happen again. “You’re telling me,” Dec nodded. When he was younger it hadn’t seemed like there was anything unusual about Mystic Falls at all but his view of the town had changed around the same time that he had experienced his first shift during the full moon. His parents and older siblings had always stressed how important it was not to draw any unwanted attention and Julian had been on hand to help him on the few occasions that he had found himself in trouble but over the last few years he had learned to stand on his own two feet more. He had told Julian about the last run in that he and Amy had had with a hunter so that his brother could be careful but the rest of the family was still in the dark. He had thought about warning them too but he knew that they only would have worried about the two of them and they wouldn’t have let them out of their sight whereas Julian was protective of them but still appreciated that they had their own lives that they needed to lead. The whole family knew that there were hunters in town anyway so they knew to be careful just like he did. “How much?” he asked when Alix confirmed that there was a reward for killing him, knowing that it would give him a better idea of just who might be coming after him next. “I can’t think of anyone. There are a few people in town who know what I am but they know I don’t want to hurt anyone and after Ben warned the last hunter off I had hoped that was the end of it,” he explained. Apparently he had been wrong about that but he was still grateful that Ben had stepped in anyway and he was also grateful that Alix was giving him this chance. “It doesn’t sound like you want that to be your life,” Dec offered, knowing that he really couldn’t blame her for that. It had to be a horrible way to live and if there was a way for Alix to get out of it then he hoped that she would take it. “I will, thank you,” he said, knowing that he was lucky that Alix was giving him a chance the same way that Ben had. “I don’t want this to happen again.” He knew that it would devastate the people he loved if anything happened to him so he knew that he was going to have to be much more careful from now on.
