Danny knew how close he and Riley had come to never being able to do something like this again. If Henrik and Lukas hadn’t been there to bring everyone that Klaus used in the ritual back to life then he knew that his last memory of Riley would have been watching him get his heart ripped out of his chest. The truth was that that memory still haunted Danny sometimes when he closed his eyes at night but he was much better at hiding that now. Riley was the one that had died that day and Danny was doing his best to be strong for him. He knew that that was what Riley needed from him and the last thing that Danny wanted was to end up letting him down again. He already felt like he had failed Riley for not figuring out where he was being held or where the ritual was going to take place until it was too late. Danny knew that Riley didn’t blame him but it still didn’t lessen the guilt that he felt at all and that was something that Danny knew that he was going to have to learn to live with. He wasn’t sure if it would ever truly go away but at the end of the day Riley was back where he belonged and that was something that Danny knew better than to take for granted. They had been given a second chance and Danny knew that he wanted to take it. He loved Riley and if something like going camping was what it took for them to get back on the right track then he knew that that was exactly what they were going to do. He knew that it would take time for things to get back to normal but they had their lives ahead of them now and that was something that he was looking forward to. Inviting Riley to go to Hawaii with him was a big step, the last time they were there they had started out as friends and their summer fling had started but now they were so much more than that. Danny’s parents had accepted Riley for what he was and Danny hoped that his grandparents would too. They were more traditional than his parents and it had taken them a while to accept the fact that he was gay but in the end they had realised that he was still their grandson and they still loved him. Introducing them to someone that he truly loved was a bit step but it was one that he knew he wanted to take. His parents and grandparents didn’t exactly get along given that his parents had walked away from their druid heritage but Danny’s grandparents meant the world to him and he knew that he wanted them involved in every aspect of his life. “In that case I’ll definitely have to steal you away for a few weeks,” Danny said, a smile working its way across his face as he looked over at Riley. “Getting you passed the beginner level in a couple of weeks might be pushing it but I’d give it a shot,” he added, his tone teasing and his expression playful as he stole a kiss. It was through teaching Riley to surf that the two of them had really started getting to know each other so if he was honest it only seemed right to pick that back up again if they had the chance. Hearing Riley say that he loved him too was enough to make his heart race and he took the can from Riley before opening it and taking a sip. His past relationships had always been complicated, it had never been as easy as this and he wasn’t sure whether he would ever find himself in a relationship as good as this again. “I’m sure he would. There’s a lot more to your senses and abilities than most werewolves realise,” he nodded. He had met a few different werecreatures during his time in Mystic Falls and a lot of them appeared to know different things about what they were but few seemed to know it all. As Riley spoke again, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “I see how it is, you have the werewolf strength but you want me to do the hard work,” he teased, rolling his eyes playfully as he picked up the bag and started to hammer in the pegs. Who would’ve imagined that the thought of travelling again was making him happy? He’d hated almost every minute of it when he’d been growing up, only feeling that desperate joy when the days until summer vacation started counting down and he knew it would be weeks instead of months before he’d get to go home and see Terra. In Hawaii it had been different. Spotting Danny as he had cut off the thoughts of home and his best friend. He’d wished Terra had been there herself to meet this incredible guy he’d found but Riley had known if he had the chance to stay there for another month or even a year, he would’ve taken it. Not because it would’ve meant finally being able to stop travelling, no. It was because of Danny.
Danny had given him that enjoyment back. Danny had been his anchor. Danny had been the guy he’d fallen in love with and the guy he could imagine a lifetime with now. College lay ahead of them, a shift from the life he’d built here in town, just a small one.
Right now, in the middle of the woods, even that felt a long way off but it wasn’t that far. Just a matter of months for that fresh start, not that much more if they did decide to head back to the beach. Riley’s mouth curved into a smug grin, laughter rolled out. ”I was gonna say you just wanna see me strolling around in nothing but shorts for a few weeks but I think maybe you just want to see me wipe out instead.” Blue eyes narrowed playfully as Danny drew him into a kiss. He curled his fingers around the back of Danny’s neck, drawing back to shake his head before he stole a kiss back. ”I can’t fail, I’m gonna have the best teacher out there.” His mouth curved as he kissed Danny one last time and drew back. This time he had werewolf strength and agility on his side. He hadn’t exactly been entirely clumsy before but getting up on a surfboard on a moving wave wasn’t the same as swimming in a lake or hiking through the woods. It took a different skillset.
There were plenty of those he needed to learn, parts of his werewolf abilities he still wasn’t using as he could do. It’d been a steep learning curve, one he didn’t think he’d done too badly at. Riley nodded, a little relieved as Danny practically promised Scott would help him again. He took a slip of his soda before he balanced it next to his leg. ”Hidden depths,” Riley murmured. ”Seems like Scott’s managed to dig deep since he got bitten. With the help of the whole of the pack, of course.” They’d had to, from what he’d heard from Danny and the rest of them. You didn’t have much choice when there was always a new threat on the horizon. At least they could put that out of their minds for now, enjoy the woods for what they were, not who might’ve been lurking out here. Fluttering his lashes, Riley went down to one knee to start digging a fire pit. ”I’m the one with the werewolf strength and the desire to watch my boyfriend flashing his muscles,” he admitted. Grinning, Riley rose to his feet and held out the spade instead. ”Swap?” he asked, as though butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth.

In the past Danny had always had a habit of liking the wrong guy. He had known for a long time that he was gay and thankfully his friends and parents had been accepting of that in the end. Jackson had helped since he had made it clear to everyone that if they gave him any trouble because of it then they would have him to deal with and that had made things so much easier for Danny. He had always been free to follow his heart but he had often found himself drawn to guys who would only end up breaking his heart, not that he had ever known that at the time. The first guy that he had gotten it right with was Ethan and after they broke up and Danny headed to Hawaii on holiday he had found himself falling in love once more. He hadn’t expected it to happen so quickly and he definitely hadn’t expected it to happen with someone who was only ever meant to be a summer romance but Riley wasn’t like anyone that he had ever met before. He was a good guy and there had been a connection between them right from the start, one that Danny had been reluctant to let go off when they had parted ways. He hadn’t thought that he would get to see Riley again but life had thrown them together in Mystic Falls and things had been so good between them ever since. Danny knew that he was never going to forget the image of Riley lying on the ground with his heart ripped out but over time he knew that the image would fade and until then Danny knew that he wanted to spend as much time with his boyfriend reminding himself that he was still alive after all. That was why they had decided to go camping, so that they could have some time away from everything else for a while, and Danny had a feeling that it was just what they both needed. “It might be a bit of both,” Danny chuckled, an easy smile forming on his face as he let his hand rest against Riley’s cheek and kissed him back. Being around Riley was as easy as breathing for Danny and he knew that he didn’t want to go through the pain of losing him again, he couldn’t. “I don’t know about that but I’ll definitely do my best,” he grinned. Riley had made progress during their surfing lessons before, Danny couldn’t deny that, and he would do everything he could to help Riley again. There were other things that Riley needed to learn such as how to use his werewolf abilities to their full extent but that was where Danny and the pack came in. “He hasn’t had much of a choice, he had to learn a lot of it,” Danny shrugged. “Derek helped him a lot and so did Deaton and I’ve been trying to do the same since we got here,” he added. He knew that he didn’t have the same level of supernatural knowledge that Deaton did but he was trying his best to fill that role. “Now that sounds more like it,” Danny chuckled as he got started on putting the tent up. As Riley offered to swap with him and give him an innocent look, Danny rolled his eyes playfully. “No chance.”RILEY PARKER

It hadn’t been a pride exactly, that emotion was something he’d always associated with his mom, but in a way Riley had always accepted who he was, had stood with his head held high when others had occasionally looked down on that. It had taken him a while with what he’d become after he’d been bitten but with Danny and his pack on his side he’d even become comfortable in his skin with that. Everything else he’d always been aware of, knew it was just who he was. Gay. As certain of it as he had been that New York really had felt like home to him or that Terra was his best friend. He’d never had to hide it, had never wanted to and with Danny there’d never been any need to. They’d liked one another from the start and Mystic Falls had given them a chance to let that grow. If having a thousand year old vampire rip your heart out hadn’t stopped their relationship, Riley was pretty damn sure nothing ever would.
That was a dark twist in their joined road he’d tried to start putting behind them. They had history he’d always hold close to his heart, but not that. Riley felt the warmth in the air around them, in the sun beams that broke down through the trees overhead. Nowhere near hot enough to have really reminded him of Hawaii. Riley clucked his tongue, shaking his head. Blue eyes peered at Danny from under his lashes. ”You’re the ones that’s gonna be kissing it all better afterwards anyway,” he reminded him. Danny would always watch out for him on the water, that much he knew. He felt that certainty in Danny’s kiss, in his own chest as he trailed his fingers lightly over the back of Danny’s neck. Snorting, Riley shook his head. ”I do know about it and for me, you’re always gonna be the best teacher.” The people who knew you best always were. Without Danny he would’ve been out of his depth on so many things. With Danny he felt like he was really starting to flourish in Mystic Falls.
How Scott did all of it on his own, well, with Stiles’ help of course, he honestly didn’t know. Alone at the start he’d felt like he was drowning in his own emotions, his suddenly hair trigger temper almost ripping his life as well as his dad’s truck to pieces. Riley’s expression sobered a little as he swallowed hard. ”I can’t even imagine what all of that must’ve been like, even with help.” Scott had ended up an Alpha on the basis of his inner strength though. From what he’d heard that was incredible rare and impressive. Scott had certainly been an amazing pack leader to him, not that he had much more experience there. Undoubtedly if Scott was out here the camp would’ve been set up already. He was a little more lackadaisical in that regard, trying to convince Danny to put up the tent by flattery alone. Riley laughed, his grin broad as he bent and started to pack rocks around the little pit he’d dug. ”I guess I will just have to indulge and watch then,” he crooned. He carefully packed the rocks close, making sure the fire wouldn’t break out of the pit later. The last thing the town needed was a forest fire. ”How about we make a deal and when we’re heading home I pack everything back up again?” he offered. There was still a little innocence in his wide blue eyes but the offer was genuine.
