Life was good. Considering everything that had happened in the last two years, on top of the first sixteen pretty screwed up years of his life, that was something Riley had never expected to be able to say. All the frustration that usually burned in him when his parents were off somewhere in their own little bubble had bled away, no longer giving his temper an excuse to burn through him. That wasn’t to say he could still lose his grip, that did still happen on occasion of course, but it no longer felt like he was at the mercy of a riptide of anger. These days he had lifelines – Tatia, who had been a part of the ritual that had killed him and who had become a friend and confidant afterwards, Scott and the others, who were his pack, Laney, who’d become one of his closest friends at the High School … and then there was Danny. Riley glanced aside as he took the looping turn that would lead them out into the woods, his lips curving into a smile as he reached out and settled his hand on his boyfriend’s leg. Danny was the best part of his life – better than having a home he’d spent more than a month living in, better than actually getting to graduate high school and heading to college, better than finally being able to breathe without the pressure of taking care of one of his parents. In the close to two years since that moment he’d first spotted him on the beach in Hawaii, Danny had become his everything. Most wouldn’t have celebrated that bond and the peace that finally seemed to be reigning in town by camping out in woods famed for being the site of dozens of bloody deaths, but they won’t most people.
After nearly two years of struggling with that fact Riley was glad that they weren’t. Smiling to himself still he drew his hand off of Danny’s thigh, setting it back on the wheel to turn them off the road and on to the mostly dirt track that led through the woods, towards the clearing where they planned on setting up their tent for the night. ”You ready to be stuck out here with me for a couple of nights?” he asked, a trace of amusement in his voice. ”I think there’s probably still some sand in the tent from the last time we used it.” And didn’t Hawaii feel like it had been a lifetime ago. That had been before the bite, before he’d stood up to his parents, found a home in Mystic Falls and a pack in Scott and the others. A future. Riley took another turn, made it another five hundred yards before the trail finally grew too narrow for them to continue in the truck. ”I guess it’s on foot from here,” he said, turning off the engine and unbuckling before he turned in the seat. ”I know it won’t be entirely true but it feels like it’s going to be just the two of us out here.” Under the stairs, away from the town the way it had been back in Hawaii, before he’d had a clue the supernatural had even existed. Then he’d just been a boy with a crush on one of the most incredible guys he’d ever met. Scratch that, Riley thought as he settled his hand at the nape of Danny’s neck, his boyfriend was the most incredible guy he’d ever met. Mouth curving at the thought, he leaned in and pressed his lips against Danny’s.

Danny’s track record with relationships while he was in Beacon Hills wasn’t great, he’d had a few relationships and a few things that could be described as nothing more than flings over the years but nothing that had really lasted other than his relationship with Ethan. The whole time they were together he had known what Ethan was and the truth was that it hadn’t bothered him one bit but after Aiden died Danny had known that Ethan would have stuck around in Beacon Hills despite all of the painful memories of losing his twin if they had stayed together and Danny knew that would have made him miserable. Rather than run the risk of Ethan hating him one day he had broken things off between them, even telling him that he couldn’t date a werewolf any longer, but that hadn’t been the reason at all. The reason was that he had wanted Ethan to be happy and that was never going to happen as long as he stayed in Beacon Hills so no matter how much it had hurt Danny knew that it had been the right decision to make. The summer following their breakup he hadn’t thought for a moment that he would end up meeting someone during his holiday in Hawaii but Riley had made a lasting impression on him, so much so that he had felt like his heart had been breaking all over again when the boy had left Hawaii at the end of his holiday and had only started to feel whole again when they ran into each other at school in Mystic Falls. Danny knew that everything that had happened since could have easily driven them apart but it hadn’t and he was starting to think that nothing would manage to do that for very long. It had been one thing to have Riley walk out of his life at the end of the summer but back then Danny had at least been able to take solace from the fact that Riley was still out there somewhere living his life. Losing him during the ritual that Klaus Mikaelson had performed had been something else entirely and Danny had a feeling that it was going to be a while before he felt comfortable letting his boyfriend out of his sight again. He knew better than to become one of those clingy people who had to do everything with their partner but he wanted to make sure that Riley was as safe as possible after already failing him once. That day they had decided to go camping and instead of hiding away in fear after everything that had happened Riley was taking his life back and Danny couldn’t help but feel proud of him for that. As Riley’s hand came to rest on his thigh, Danny placed his hand over his boyfriend’s and kept them like that even as Riley drove. He knew that camping out in the woods in Mystic Falls wasn’t perhaps the best idea in the world given exactly who and what lived in the town but at the end of the day Riley could look after himself and Danny knew that he could too so he was confident that they would be just fine. “Definitely,” Danny nodded as Riley asked if he was ready to be stuck out there with him for a few nights before feeling a smile touch his lips as he said there was probably still some sand left in the tent. “It only seems right to bring a little bit of Hawaii with us,” he added with a grin. “I’ll never forget that last night we spent camped out on the beach together before you flew home the next day.” That had been the night when Danny had realised that he had been falling for Riley but by then it had been too late to do anything about it so he had done his best to bury those feelings instead. “You never know, it might be true but even if it isn’t, you’re the only one I’m interested in,” Danny assured him. It had been the same way back in Hawaii, back then Riley had been a complete stranger to him but he had been someone that he had felt drawn to nonetheless. So much had changed since then but one thing remained the same and that was how they felt about each other and Danny knew that was all that mattered. As Riley’s hand found the back of his neck and he began to lean in, Danny brought his hand up to rest against his cheek and met him half way, his lips moving against Riley’s in a way that felt as natural as it had the first time. “Have I told you lately how glad I am that I have you in my life?” he asked, his lips brushing lightly against Riley’s with every word. This was what normality felt like. It’d been a while since he’d known what that was like, his one real taste of it coming in Hawaii. His dad had still been lurking in the background then, every morning coming with the chance that his dad would be taking him back on the road. Inevitably it had happened, those sunny afternoons and breezy evenings he’d spent with Danny left behind on the island. The immersion back into the chaotic life his parents chose to live had been a shock to his system and Riley knew that it had been all the harder having had that little taste of something more. In a way he supposed the bite had been a blessing, a way out of the chaos for him. It had brought pain, more than he’d ever felt in his entire life, fear, grief, worry too, but around all of that there was this sense that he finally had the life he’d always wanted. Each full moon still twisted him up, still turned him into something that was pretty damn monstrous but it’d given him all of this too. Riley drew in a deep breath as he drove, drawing the green scent of the woods into his lungs through the open driver’s window. The air was laced with Danny’s scent, those subtle little tinges on the air that were specifically him, tinges that he hadn’t been able to pick apart so well before the bite. It was a comfortable scent for him, one that signified home as much as it did love and happiness. He was in an amazing state of mind this afternoon and nothing, he told himself, knowing there was a chance that in Mystic Falls something honestly could, was going to spoil any of this.
Music he hadn’t bothered turned up hummed away in the back of Riley’s mind anyway as they drove out of town and into the woods. He glanced at Danny, his smile broadening to flash his dimples as Danny’s hand settled over his. Asking if life got any better than this was probably going to be some sort of red flag to Fate but honestly, he couldn’t remember a time in recent memory when he’d been happier. His amusement became a chuckle as he scanned the road ahead of them. ”You might not be saying that if I start snoring, or I manage to steal the lion’s share of the sleeping bag,” he teased. The first was possible but the second, not all that much. They’d spent enough time sleeping together now for them to know each other that way, for it to be comfortable. It’d been that way almost from the start, their last night in Hawaii proof of that. ”Brings it full circle,” he admitted, his voice just a little less bright at the thought. ”I must’ve had a smile on my face a mile wide when I headed home that morning. I thought I’d just get changed, head back out to the beach to convince you to come out on the water with me.” It hadn’t happened though, his dad had been there waiting, half the bags already packed, the flight booked and him with no real way of saying the goodbye Danny deserved. That wasn’t something he wanted to dwell on now, their lives having collided again despite what had happened that day. Riley’s smile was back as they stopped in the woods, a faint blush touching his cheeks. ”I always knew you had tunnel vision when it came to me.” He’d been the same though, his heart latching on to the other boy before his brain even got caught up. Both were engaged now as he inched closer to Danny. His boyfriend’s question had him shaking his head, a guileful look on his face for a moment as he pretended to give it a little more consideration. ”Not in the last hour,” he murmured, nudging those scant millimetres closer to kiss Danny thoroughly before he drew back again. ”I think it’s something I’ve heard before, maybe echoing around in my own head. I’m so glad for you too.” The time before all of this, before Danny, before his life in Mystic Falls, his pack, it didn’t bear thinking about.

Sitting in the car with Riley now it was easy to pretend that the ritual had never happened. Danny had never thought that it was possible to feel pain like he had that day, his heart had literally broken in two only to be put back together later that same day after Henrik and Lukas literally worked their magic and brought back everyone who had died so that Klaus could break his curse. Everything that had happened had made Danny that much more appreciative of the relationships that he had not just with Riley but with his friends and his parents as well and it had made him cherish his time with them even more. There were still times when he closed his eyes and saw Riley stood in the middle of a ring of flames getting his heart ripped out but the image no longer kept him up at night the way it once had. Now it was easier to remember that even though that had happened the day hadn’t ended that way. Riley had been returned to all of them and for that Danny was grateful. He didn’t know what was going to happen in the future but they had that day and he knew that whatever life threw their way they would get through it together and they would both fight to make sure that they weren’t separated again. Danny had known that there was magic in the world before the ritual, after all Allison had been brought out of her coma and had been returned to all of them, but he had never been there when it had happened itself. It made him want to learn more about his druid heritage so that he could be of more help to the others and he was making time for that as often as he could but school, his friends and Riley were always going to be his top priorities. For now he was looking forward to just spending the day with Riley and hopefully forget about everything that had happened before and after the ritual. It was a day just for the two of them and that was something that Danny knew that he wanted to make the most of while it lasted. “That won’t change my mind,” he chuckled. He and Riley had camped out before and it had never been a problem and they often ended up spending the night together at Riley’s place when his parents weren’t there so Danny knew exactly what he was letting himself in for. As Riley spoke again, Danny squeezed his shoulder gently. “I know it didn’t work out how you wanted it to back then but that doesn’t matter now, it’s in the past,” he assured him. This time around things were different and he had to believe that if Riley’s dad decided that it was time to move again then Riley would fight to stay in Mystic Falls. Not only did they have each other but Riley had plenty of friends in town too and he had made the town his home so it really was different to Hawaii and that knowledge was something that Danny was holding on to. “I’m not ashamed to admit it, you’ve always been special to me,” Danny shrugged. It had been that way ever since the day they met, even when they were back in Hawaii he’d only had eyes for Riley and that hadn’t changed now. He hadn’t wanted to admit what was going on back then but now he was free to admit it and he knew that he didn’t want to go back to the way things used to be. Turning to face Riley as they reached the end of the track and he brought the vehicle to a stop, Danny kissed him back gently. “We should really get moving,” he admitted, his lips brushing against Riley’s as he spoke even though the truth was that he didn’t want to move just yet. How many times had he hoped they were actually going to get to do this when they were in Hawaii? At the time it had seemed like nothing more than a pipe dream, the yearnings of a tender heart who’d just had its first taste of what a real relationship might’ve been. Riley knew that chances were it was never going to be more than that, there was no way his dad was going to stick around on the big island for more than a couple of months, not without beating his own personal record for how long he could sit at a table somewhere and write without his attention being caught by somewhere else. In the months between the beach and woods of an entirely different sort, he’d pictured this. He and Danny escaping from the sort of trouble his parents always seemed keen to bring to his life, just the two of them alone in the middle of nowhere, the only sounds around them the wind, the birds and the rush of water that had been the most soothing sound to him since he’d been old enough to venture out near the water on his own. They’d had it a few times in Hawaii, normality not yet touched by the Alpha who’d bitten him then, but despite the two of them managing to get together, normality hadn’t come easily in Mystic Falls. The Riley who had been ashamed and terrified of what he was would’ve suggested that maybe he’d been the one to bring all of that trouble to their doorstep but he knew better than that now. The trouble that had been brewing in Mystic Falls had started long before he’d been conceived and would likely carry on long after he drew his last breath, hopefully decades in the future … after a long happy life with the man sitting next to him.
Trouble looming on the horizon was going to hopefully be the furthest thing from his mind that day. They were gonna grab their packs in a minute and find a quiet spot in the woods, one that hopefully hadn’t played host to any psychotic supernatural creatures lately. He’d checked with Stiles before picking a spot, trying to make sure it was as far from the recent police activity out here as possible. Feigned innocence had Riley narrowing his blue eyes for a moment. ”You bought ear plugs?” he teased. If he did snore they’d solve that problem but not the second. They’d been able to spend his last night in Hawaii together, camping out under the trees like they were going to now. He’d walked back to the cabin the morning after, hoping for a replay the next night, only to find himself on a plane even before the sun was going down. Riley reached across with a hand, patting Danny’s thigh as he squeezed his shoulder. ”We got here anyway,” he murmured in agreement. It had just been a slightly longer, slightly rougher post than he’d hoped for back then. The fact that they’d made it on that road was a matter of pride, one that had him grinning despite the heat that was burning in his cheeks. ”That goes both ways, you know,” he warned. ”That first day on the beach, I honestly couldn’t keep my eyes off of you.” And it hadn’t just been an appreciation of Danny’s face or body, it had been the boy he’d seen shining out from inside of all of that. That boy had just grown more incredible with each week they’d spent together in Mystic Falls, with each storm the two of them had weathered together. Riley settled a hand on his boyfriend’s cheek, his fingertips tracing his neck even as his thumb brushed over his cheekbone. He’d allowed himself to sink into the kiss, not drawing back even as Danny whispered against his lips. ”We should,” he agreed, not moving yet. He smiled against Danny’s mouth, stealing another momentary kiss. ”Not so sure I can move from here. Think I might need a shove to break free.” He was teasing but when it came to that tent out in the woods and a night spent under the stars with the guy he loved, that might not be that far from the truth.

Danny knew all too well that if things had worked out differently then he and Riley wouldn’t be together right now about to spend some well needed time alone together. If Riley’s dad hadn’t decided to move to Mystic Falls then there was a chance that they would have never seen each other again and if Henrik and Lukas hadn’t been there to bring everyone back after the ritual then this definitely wouldn’t have been possible. Danny had liked guys before but this was completely different. He was in love with Riley and the thought of him dying was one that Danny hadn’t been able to shake yet no matter how hard he tried. He knew that it was going to take time to get over what had happened for both of them but they had been given a second chance and that was something that he knew better than to waste. What would happen if Klaus returned to Mystic Falls he wasn’t sure but no matter what it was, Danny was certain that they would face it together. He knew that he was never going to be able to forgive the hybrid for ripping Riley’s heart out of his chest, he understood from Henrik that sacrifices had needed to be made but there hadn’t been any need for him to enjoy it as much as he clearly had. That was something that Danny was never going to be able to forget but for Riley’s sake he was doing his best to move on from it. Riley was the one that had died and been brought back that day and Danny was doing his best to be strong for him because the last thing he wanted was for Riley to end up worrying about him with everything else that was going on in his life. That day was a chance for them to escape everything else for a while and just be together and that was something that Danny had been looking forward to. “Yep, already packed,” Danny chuckled, his smile playful as he looked over at his boyfriend. He knew that Riley didn’t snore but that didn’t mean that he couldn’t have some fun teasing him about it nonetheless. So many things could have stopped them from getting to where they were now but they had found their way back to each other and for that he was grateful. “I always knew it was my body you liked,” he teased. There really had been something between them right from the start and even though he hadn’t known to begin with whether he and Riley batted for the same side or not it hadn’t stopped Danny from wanting to get to know him. He had taught Riley to surf and something else had started to develop between them pretty quickly, something that still seemed to be growing with each passing day. He knew that it was more than a physical attraction between them but that didn’t mean that he was going to let Riley off that easily. Leaning into Riley’s touch, Danny kissed him back gently before laughing as Riley spoke again. “I know your dad is accepting of us but he might not like a make out session or whatever else might happen in his truck if we don’t move,” Danny chuckled, stealing another kiss before letting his gaze meet Riley’s. “Are you willing to take that risk?”RILEY PARKER

All of this could’ve been ruined for him by Niklaus’ ritual. Before it had happened Riley knew how he felt for Danny and was pretty sure he was loved in return, but what had happened could’ve torn that apart. Some people grew distant after something like that had happened, too ravaged by the horrors they had gone through to hold everything else together, unable to look at one another and not see the loss. It had been the opposite for him and Danny, what had happened had just brought them closer. It didn’t mean that everything would be the same though. He could’ve been terrified to set foot outside the door, unable to enjoy what he had once done in fear of Niklaus and his army of sycophantic little werewolves making their way out here. That would’ve been a tragedy all of its own but after everything that had happened Riley had found himself lucky enough to be holding on to everything that meant the most to him. His boyfriend, the great outdoors that had once given him his only freedom, this town, his pack … even his parents. They were in town this weekend, part of the reason why he’d decided that an escape with Danny might be the best way to go about things. His relationship with them had gotten better since the ritual but Riley knew that tempting fate too much was just like painting a target on your back and he absolutely didn’t want to do that. Careful, the little voice in his head reminded him. They were heading out to the woods where dozens of people had turned up dead after all. Between the two of them though, Riley knew they had things in hand. They were prepared for almost anything the world could throw at them now.
Including him somehow magically starting to snore. Was it even possible for werewolves to snore? Another question to toss in the direction of Stiles or Scott. He always had one on the tip of his tongue, probably driving Danny and the others half crazy with them but that was just him still finding his feet in all of that. Riley huffed out a snort at Danny’s chuckle. ”I’ll just have to make sure I’m extra loud then,” he drawled softly. He fluttered his lashes, innocence personified. There were a lot of things he was willing to tease about these days, their present, their future, the past that had led them along a tangled path to her. Riley’s lashes still fluttered as he held his hands up in complete surrender. His blue eyes twinkled behind his lashes as he tipped his head in Danny’s direction. ”Have you looked in the mirror? I would’ve had to have been crazy not to have noticed it, but that was just a bonus,” he promised. It was Danny’s warmth, his heart, that had caught his attention first. Pretty faces were a dime a dozen in the world but not everybody had that sort of personality beneath. It was the incredible man that Danny was that he’d fallen in love with. Riley poured that feeling into their brief kiss, his lips curving as he drew back and had Danny laughing. He clucked his tongue against the back of his teeth as he glanced around. ”Absolutely,” he promised wickedly. ”My dad would never find out. He still doesn’t know that I had to get almost the entire interior fixed up.” Sawyer had saved his ass then, returning the truck in pristine condition. Grumbling under his breath as he rested his forehead against Danny’s for a moment, Riley reached behind him and popped the door. ”I would keep you in this truck all weekend, but I promise fresh air and a night under the stars and canvas.” Sighing, Riley stole one last kiss before he slipped out, tugging Danny out across the bench seat with him.

Danny had a feeling that getting away for the night was probably exactly what he and Riley both needed. After everything that had happened he had been reluctant to leave his boyfriend’s side unless he absolutely had to and even though Danny would be surprised if that hadn’t ended up getting annoying at times, Riley had at least been happy to indulge him. Danny would be the first to admit that he was a complete wreck when Riley went missing and when they had finally found out where he was he had hoped that Riley was going to be alright but instead he had been forced to stand by and watch as his boyfriend’s heart was ripped right out of his chest. Danny had been doing his best to stay strong for Riley and not let him know how much seeing that had affected him, how there were still times now when he closed his eyes and saw the same image play in his mind again, but there were times when that facade was pretty difficult to keep up. He felt a little silly given that Riley was the one that had died and was brought back by Henrik but he couldn’t help it and he hoped that having some time alone together now would at least give them the chance to hopefully move on from what had happened. He knew that there was a chance that Klaus might not like the fact that Riley and the others he had sacrificed had been brought back but Danny refused to think about that now. Henrik had brought the three of them back and he was pretty sure that the warlock would do so again if he had to so they at least had someone in their corner now and that was a relief to say the least. He had managed to learn a lot about werewolves but whether it was possible for them to snore wasn’t something that Danny actually knew for sure but it was still fun to tease Riley about it nonetheless. “That’s fine, you try it and I’ll be sleeping in the truck instead,” Danny chuckled. He knew that there was no chance of that happening but it was still a possibility anyway. As Riley spoke again, Danny felt a smile work its way across his face. “It’s the same for you. I wasn’t going to pass up the chance to teach you to surf even if you were awful at it to begin with,” he grinned. He hadn’t wanted Riley to end up getting hurt which was something that could easily happen out in the ocean without really knowing what you were doing so he had offered his services as a teacher and it had definitely worked out well as far as he was concerned. Back then he hadn’t known that he would end up falling for Riley but that was exactly what had happened and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. The world they lived in was dangerous but that just made every moment together that much more precious and he knew that he wanted to make the most of it while he could. As Riley spoke again, a groan escaped Danny’s lips. “You’re meant to be the good influence here. Keep this up and we won’t be leaving the truck,” he warned, knowing that it would be far too easy for the two of them to get lost in their own little world. Kissing Riley back, Danny didn’t offer any resistance as Riley pulled him out of the truck. “The sooner we get the tent up, the sooner we can relax,” he nodded as he started to grab everything that they were going to need from out of the truck. Space was one thing he tended to have in spades at home when his parents were away. That wasn’t quite as much these days, they’d been spending time in and out of town for the last few months, but still more often than not they were gone. That should’ve meant he had all the room he needed, all the room him and Danny needed. It wasn’t the same though. The woods had always been his breathing space, his retreat when things at home had driven him the point of wanting to explode. For a while after he’d been attacked in Bear Creek he’d been reluctant to get back out to them. Niklaus’ ritual probably should’ve stopped their appeal forever but what had happened in the quarry had the opposite effect. Just that short time on the other side had taught him that he should never put aside something he loved because of fear. Riley didn’t know when Klaus Mikaelson would raise his ugly head again and start picking out members of the pack for his little hybrid army. What he did know was that he wasn’t going to sit at home worrying about it. The four walls could ring with silence this weekend, he was going to enjoy being out in the great wide open with his boyfriend. A fire under the stars, the scent of smoke drifting on the air as they curled together under the cover of the tent. If there was anything lurking out there, just waiting for them then they’d deal with that too. There wasn’t anything, Riley was determined to make sure there wasn’t anyway.
He pushed the thought from his mind as Danny teased him about his snoring. No grim thoughts out here in the woods for tonight, just time for the two of them to get wrapped up in one another. In more ways than one if he didn’t end up snoring loud enough to drive Danny away. Riley tried for innocence as he shook his head but the grin broke out anyway. ”I swear, no snoring,” he promised, swiping a finger over his chest. ”No hogging the sleeping bag either.” They’d spent nights together like that in Hawaii, although things were different then. Riley laughed, nudging Danny’s shoulder as he reminded him how bad he’d been on the board. ”Not all of us can be stunningly handsome and talented on a board at the same time. We have our talents elsewhere.” His definitely hadn’t been surfing but the ocean was something he’d understood from the start and he’d known that his way of learning more about it was going to be listening to an expert. Danny had been his guru in so many things since. The person he’d fallen head over heels in love with. Riley grinned wickedly, stealing one more kiss as Danny warned him that he was meant to the good influence here. ”Good influence? Naw. Not this weekend.” They would leave the truth though. He didn’t want to spend the whole weekend cramped up in here. Reining himself in Riley opened his door and slid out, drawing Danny with him. ”Exactly,” he crooned. ”I packed an easy dinner, I figured we wouldn’t want to make a fuss first night. You remember how to get the tent up?” He slung his backpack over one shoulder, grabbing the cooler and the pack with the tent in from the back as he kicked the door shut with one foot. ”The clearing’s just through that stand of trees.”

Danny had known how lucky he was to have Riley back in his life ever since he had seen the other boy in the corridor at the local high school. Back then he hadn’t known what was going to happen, all he had known was that he had needed to help Riley stay in control. He hadn’t wanted the other boy to have to deal with telling that to the other kids at school and he knew Riley well enough to know that he hadn’t wanted to risk hurting anyone either. Ever since then they had been figuring things out together and Danny had thought that that was all going to change the day of the ritual. He’d had no choice but to stand by completely helpless and watch while Riley’s heart was ripped out of his chest and his world had come crashing down that day. He hadn’t for one minute thought that Riley would end up being brought back but not a day went by when he wasn’t glad that he had been. Now they had the chance to spend some time together and forget about all of that for a while and for that he was grateful. Soon enough they were going to be graduating and the truth was that Danny had no idea what was going to happen after that. He had applied to different colleges but he was starting to think that Whitmore was going to be the best place to go so that he could stay close to all of his friends. For a while after Jackson left he had found himself at a bit of a loose end and following the others to Mystic Falls had been a big step but now Danny knew that it was the right thing for him. Now things were completely different to the way they were back then and that was a good thing as far as he was concerned. It was their chance to start getting back to normal as much as possible and he knew that he wanted to make the most of it. Camping wasn’t something that he necessarily would have thought of considering they were still so close to home but it meant that they would get the chance to spend some quality time alone together so he certainly wasn’t going to argue. They were often able to spend time at Riley’s place when his parents were away but this was different and Danny knew that he wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. They were going to be in their own little bubble and that definitely wasn’t a bad thing as far as he was concerned. “I’m going to hold you to that,” Danny chuckled. He was only teasing Riley and they both knew it but it was still fun nonetheless. “What can I say, either you’ve got it or you don’t,” he joked. The truth was he’d had years of practice under his belt when it came to surfing so by the time he and his parents had headed to Hawaii that summer it had been pretty natural to him. Riley hadn’t had that so Danny had done all he could to help him out and it had brought them even closer in the process. “Yeah, I remember,” Danny nodded as Riley asked if he remembered how to put the tent up. It had been a while since he’d last been camping but it was something that he’d done with his parents every so often ever since he was a kid so he knew that it wouldn’t be a problem. Grabbing the rest of the stuff from the back of the car, Danny took Riley’s hand in his as they headed towards the clearing. “I’m glad we have the chance to do this,” he admitted, knowing that it would probably do them both some good to have a slice or normalcy in their lives after everything that they had been through over the last year or so. He could’ve continued to sit on the beach that summer, watching the other guys head out on the waves time and time again. Knowing that there was going to be a deadline that he’d never see coming Riley knew he could’ve just cut himself off from anything he was going to end up missing afterwards. It wouldn’t have been the first time he’d done it. Stops before he hadn’t even bothered learning people’s names, knowing that this was one of the times when it was likely he’d only have days instead of months before he woke to his dad packing up the car again. He hadn’t wanted to though, seeing Danny with the others, Riley had wanted to put himself out there. When they’d gotten on the plane weeks later and he’d left behind the guy he’d started to fall for maybe there’d been a little regret but the loss and the possibility of finding Danny again at some point when he got free of his parents had felt worth it. Now Riley knew it absolutely was. After all they’d been through he never wanted to go back to a time before all of this. The pain, the change, even coming to on the other side knowing that he was dead, it had all been what had to happen to get the two of them here. They had their happy ever after thanks to all of that and even if it took him fighting to the death again Riley knew he would do whatever it took to keep it. You didn’t get a love like this every day and he’d heard and seen what had happened to his friends who hadn’t been able to hold on to that sort of thing. Riley didn’t want that to be him, he didn’t want it to be them. So even if camping turned out to be a complete disaster, it was going to be one they were facing together.
The woods had been dangerous since before he’d ever come to town but Riley was pretty sure they could make them their spot for a while, just as they had the beach back in Hawaii. Chin tucked, a butter wouldn’t melt look on his face, Riley swiped a finger in a cross over his heart. ”You’re gonna sleep like a baby,” he promised. He had after that first day on the board, exhausted and aching, wearing a goofy smile on his face he’d collapsed face down in his bed. There was no way he’d ever be a natural on the board the way that Danny was but it hadn’t mattered. ”You definitely had it,” Riley told him with a nudge. ”Once I saw you I just couldn’t look away. I still can’t.” His lips curled with he admission. He still couldn’t believe his luck either. After what had happened in Oregon it could’ve turned out so differently. It had taken a while but all the pieces had fallen into place eventually. That smile remained in place as he slid out of the truck and started to gather his stuff up. This was gonna be just like it had been on the island, except with way less sand of course. They started up the trail towards the clearing that was just visible through the trees, hand in hand. Riley gave Danny’s a squeeze as he stepped over a fallen tree. ”Me too. Feels good to be able to show you my place here, the way you showed me yours in Hawaii. I’ve always felt at home here, especially with you.” Riley hadn’t expected that when he’d picked a place on the map, maybe figuring he’d manage the two years until college if he was lucky. Backing into the clearing, Riley immediately shrugged off the bags, letting them hit the ground before he spread his arms wide and looked up through the canopy to the circle of blue sky above. ”Welcome to Camp Parker, I’m your boyfriend, I’ll be your host for the next couple of days. Can I get you a warm can of soda?” Riley wiggled his brows as he dropped his hands again.

Danny knew that staying out in the woods for a while probably wasn’t the best idea in the world but it wasn’t a full moon and they were going to be out there together so he knew that he just had to believe that it would all be fine. This was something that they both needed after everything that had happened though, a sense of normality just like they’d had when they met in Hawaii. Finding anything even close to that had been difficult since arriving in Mystic Falls but they were doing the best they could and Danny knew that they couldn’t do anymore than that. He had chosen to become a part of the supernatural world when he’d decided to follow the others to Mystic Falls to try and free Allison but Riley hadn’t had a choice in the matter at all. He had been bitten by a werewolf and he had been doing his best to figure it all out on his own before they found each other again but now they had each other and they were able to tackle everything that life threw at them together. He had known back in Hawaii that they were better when they were together but when Riley flew home Danny had felt sure that they would never get to see each other again. He hadn’t known back then that Riley had planned on taking a road trip to Beacon Hills to see him but life had brought them back together in Mystic Falls anyway so things had worked out for both of them in the end. It hadn’t been easy for them during their time in Mystic Falls, Riley had died as a part of a ritual that Danny had thought was only a rumour but they were doing their best to move on from that now. Riley had been brought back and he was safe and Danny knew that he wanted it to stay that way for as long as possible. There always seemed to be something going on in the town but for now at least they could simply enjoy spending some time together and he knew that he wanted to do just that. There often ended up being people out in the woods even outside of the full moon so Danny knew that they might found out sooner or later that they weren’t alone out there but the truth was that he wasn’t worried about that right now. Riley had wanted to go camping and after everything that had happened Danny had known that there was no way that he was going to say no so he knew that they might as well make the most of the peace and quiet while it lasted. “I’ll hold you to that,” Danny grinned, knowing that Riley’s hearing was much more sensitive than his was anyway. “It’s the same for me,” he admitted. Danny had always suspected that he had a type when it came to guys and Riley definitely fit in with that but for some reason he had felt drawn to the other boy from that first day in Hawaii. Danny had offered to teach him to surf to be nice but he had wanted an excuse to spend time with Riley and the surf lessons had definitely given them the chance to do just that. Grabbing what he could from the back of the truck, Danny joined Riley in heading up the trail and he felt a smile work its way across his face as Riley squeezed his hand. “I’m looking forward to seeing it. Hopefully we’ll make more memories there like we did in Hawaii.” It was only meant to be a summer romance but it had turned into so much more than that and Danny knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. Mystic Falls had become his home after he had moved there but the person who made it complete as far as he was concerned was Riley and it seemed like the feeling was mutual. Soon enough they reached a clearing and Danny looked around them as Riley set down the bags that he was carrying. “You dork,” he chuckled. “Sure,” he added as he set the things he was carrying down next to him. “This place is amazing, how did you find it?” he asked as he looked around them once more. There’d never been many parts of his life he would’ve wanted to hold onto if he’d had the choice. Constantly caring for his dad like he was the parent and his dad was the clueless kid who’d wander out into traffic without a restraining hand. Being yanked from place to place like he was like nothing more than a piece of luggage. New schools on an almost monthly basis. The suitcases he’d constantly lived out of us. He could’ve cut it all off and not given a damn. Danny. Terra. Being able to walk out of the door and in just minutes be somewhere like this, green, open, full of fresh air and the tumble of water. Losing any of them would’ve been like cutting off an arm and it had already come too close to happening. Riley knew if it looked like it was again he’d fight for it the way he had before. Tooth and nail, fang and claw now. When you had things that meant that much you did whatever it took. You might still screw up at times, take the sort of missteps that meant you had to work your ass off to make up for them, but as long as you had what mattered in your life you had to chance to do that. You held onto it all and committed the good moments to your memory. You didn’t bury the bad ones too deep either. They might still cause pain but you learned from that pain and you moved on. You captured those moments again, even if it meant camping out in woods that weren’t quite as safe instead of the humid, verdant jungles in the islands. It was going to be cooler here at least, the mosquitos less vicious. It was going to be one of those sorts of nights with Danny he’d missed after their relationship had been pulled apart and had taken long, bumpy roads to come back together.
Terra used to tell him that he slept like the dead anyway. Not words he would’ve used these days but it was the truth. Riley lifted a finger, crossing it over his chest in a promise. ”We both got lucky that day,” he murmured, his hand finding Danny’s to squeeze it for a moment. He led the way up the trail to the camping spot he’d picked out. ”I hope so too. You ever think of going back there?” Riley swallowed and smiled as he shifted the bags he held. ”Hawaii I mean. I know my dad would never go for it but just a couple of weeks on the beach again, out on the water every morning.” It had been one of the things he’d hoped so hard for after he’d reached Bear Creek and had been caught up in a nightmare he wasn’t sure he’d be able to get out of. Maybe it wasn’t possible for the two of them right now but after their first year of college maybe, a trip for spring break to get a little time out of Mystic Falls for the first time since he’d settled here. That was a pipe dream for the moment, this little spot and a couple of nights out here with Danny were an absolute certainty. Grinning, Riley set the bags down and gave his little spiel. He clucked his tongue as he finished, setting a hand on his chest. ”The dork you love,” he adjusted. Riley went down to one knee, opening up the cooler he’d been carrying. The ice in the bottom had melted but maybe the can was still a little cool as he held it out. ”I was up here with Gwen a couple of months ago, we got turned around coming back from a cave we were checking out and came right through here. I bet you could live here a hundred years ago and still not know all these little spots.” There were probably some in town who would argue that point, he thought, settling cross-legged on the ground to start unpacking the tent.

If he was honest, ever since the ritual Danny hadn’t wanted to let Riley out of his sight. He knew that it was irrational but after everything that had happened he had wanted to keep his boyfriend close and make sure that nothing like that happened to him again. Even now Danny couldn’t help but blame himself, he had realised that Riley was missing and he had searched the town for him but it just hadn’t been enough. He hadn’t been able to find Riley and he hadn’t been able to stop the ritual from happening. Danny had moved to Mystic Falls so that he could help Scott and the others free Allison and they had managed to do that together but they hadn’t been able to save Riley. He knew deep down that there wasn’t anything that they could have done but he still felt like he had failed the person that meant the most to him in the world and Danny couldn’t shake that feeling no matter how hard he tried. He had told Riley a little of how he was feeling when they’d ended up back at his place after the ritual but that feeling had been lingering ever since then and a part of Danny hoped that now they were going to be spending some time alone together away from everyone else he might finally be able to let go of it. Riley was doing his best to move on from everything that had happened and Danny knew that he needed to do the same. “I want to. My grandparents keep trying to get me to go back and see them so perhaps I will after senior year if you’ll agree to go back with me,” Danny said, a smile working its way across his face as he looked over at Riley. The island was always going to hold special meaning for both of them considering that it was where they first met and he knew that he wanted to go back there with Riley one day. It had taken Danny’s grandparents and extended family a long time to come to terms with the fact that he was gay and he would be lying if he said that for a long time he hadn’t worried that they would never accept him for that but in the end they had come through for him and he was grateful to them for that. Even though the relationship between his parents and the rest of their family was still a little strained considering that his parents hadn’t decided to embrace their Druid heritage they had stood by him through everything and he was pretty sure that they had talked some sense into his grandparents. They had never said as much and he had never asked but it was the only explanation that he could think of for the sudden turnaround and he knew that he would never be able to thank them enough for that. His grandparents were the ones who had taught him about what it meant to be a Druid and without them he knew that he never would have been able to help the others so he was glad that things had worked out in the end. “You’re lucky I do,” he chuckled. As Riley spoke again, an amused smile worked its way across Danny’s face. “I’m definitely going to have to get Scott to teach you about tracking. It should be easy for you to find your way around with your senses,” he teased as he helped Riley unpack the tent. Danny liked to think that he knew the area around Mystic Falls pretty well by now and with all of the advantages that Riley had it should have been easy for him to find his way around but it was still amusing to Danny nonetheless. “I think here’s as good a place as any to set it up.”RILEY PARKER

Stomaching travel again had felt like an impossibility by the time the bite had happened. Riley likely wouldn’t have been able to count how many moves they’d made, how many towns and cities he’d been to at that point. Sometimes he didn’t even get to enrol in a school before he woke to the sound of his dad packing up the car again. It had been like being a leaf on the wind, one that was blown around by a particular mercurial and uncaring wind. Some of the stops might’ve been fun when he was younger, seeing the world’s biggest ball of twine or the Grand Canyon but after they’d left Hawaii practically without a word he’d been soured to it entirely. If it hadn’t been for the fact that New York was about as far as you could get from Beacon Hills and still have been on the same continent, he would’ve begged his dad to head back there. Riley knew his parents wouldn’t have bought it but he could’ve begged to stay with his grandparents and at least ended up in the same building as Terra. Maybe if he had he never would’ve been bitten but he wouldn’t have found Danny the way he had either. His grandparents would’ve said it was a case of swings and roundabouts.
Coming to after the ritual it felt like he’d been thrown from the roundabout. Fear, a pain in his heart, fractures running through the very core of him. Danny had helped to put him back together after that, the two of them coming through what had happened stronger than ever together. Without Danny Riley doubted he ever would’ve considered travelling again but the thought of being back on that beach with Danny right now almost left his mouth watering for it. ”Absolutely,” Riley breathed, his brows drawing together even as he smiled. ”My dad probably wouldn’t even notice I was gone.” With his mom back in their lives more and his own roots planted firmly here, his dad seemed to have started to grown used to heading wherever his mom went. When one returned to Mystic Falls the other was right there with them. A blessing and a curse all at the same time perhaps. ”We could see if we could get some place right on the beach and just stumble out onto the sand every morning. You could try and get me up from beginner level on the board.” It sounded pretty blissful, something travelling hadn’t been for so long for him. They still had to get to graduation though.
That had proven tough enough with everything that had happened in the last two years though. They were almost there now, the worry about getting through those final weeks melting away to the point where they could take these couple of days to just relax out in the woods and enjoy something he’d come to love about the town. Riley’s grin was beaming as he looked up at his boyfriend from where he knelt, his voice emerging sing-song-like. ”I love you too,” he promised. Riley retrieved drinks for both of them, handing Danny’s off to him before he popped his own can. Absolute innocence filled Riley’s expression as Danny said he’d get Scott to teach him about tracking. ”We weren’t lost,” he promised, grimacing faintly. ”Much. We were talking about what we found and when we stopped we just realised we’d gone a little too far. You think Scott would teach me though?” His senses as a werewolf were way beyond what they had been when he was human but there was always room for improvement, he guessed. ”Let’s get to it then. You want to hammer the pegs in?” Riley asked, wiggling his brows as he tossed the bag containing the pegs and hammer towards Danny. ”You know, just so I get to watch all the rippling muscles.”
