Matt knew first hand just how complicated families could be. His own had been a complete train wreck most of the time and he had known that it wasn’t going to get any better. Ty hadn’t had it great either and Matt knew that that was probably at least a part of the reason why the guy was the way he was but Ty was still his best friend and always would be. Matt had always envied the friends that had normal families when he was younger and there were times when he had occasionally offloaded on his friends but it hadn’t changed anything. Now Vicki was gone and his mom had left town after having an affair with Ty and leaving Matt all on his own. Having friends he could count on made life a little easier at least but it still wasn’t ideal and Matt was left to fend for himself most of the time. That was why he was still working at the Grill, he needed to in order to put food on the table and keep a roof over his head and he refused to take money from his friends or their families. He knew that his mom and Vicki probably wouldn’t have minded too much but that wasn’t Matt and he knew that he never wanted to become that person. He refused to rely on Rebekah to support him either, he wanted to be someone that she could be proud to be with rather than someone who was a burden and he knew that he wasn’t going to change his mind about that. “Keep doing that and he might come around eventually,” Matt offered. He wasn’t entirely sure but he liked to think that Ty would see sense eventually when he realised that Mason wasn’t going anywhere so he could still hope. As Mason said he was glad Ty had him, Matt felt a smile form on his face. “He always will, we look out for each other,” he nodded. It had been that way for as long as he could remember and Matt knew that he didn’t want anything to happen to come between them. It had been awkward for a while after Matt had caught his mom and Ty together but they had eventually worked past it and he was starting to think that they could do that with just about anything. As Mason spoke again, Matt studied him carefully for a moment. “You could have at least tried,” Matt countered. “Take it from someone who has been there, there isn’t anything worse than feeling completely alone. I doubt it would have worked if you’d tried but it would have at least showed Ty that you were in his corner, that you would fight to keep him safe. That’s what he needs,” he added. Ty was used to being let down by the people who were meant to care for him and Matt was pretty sure that’s why he didn’t find it easy to let people get too close to him. That was definitely something that Matt could understand but he refused to let himself fall down that dark path as well and he hoped that over time Ty would start to see the light as well. “I think Ty might have mentioned her once or twice, they don’t get along do they?” he asked, pretty sure that there had been a kind of rivalry there. “I’m glad, she deserves to have someone in her corner too,” he nodded. “Don’t give up on Ty, he can be stubborn but if you keep trying he’ll hear you out sooner or later.”MASON LOCKWOOD

He’d walked before instead of sticking it out and fighting. Tail between his legs, temper still riled Mason had sworn he wouldn’t be back. It meant that Tyler would be handling it all alone but at the time the only consideration had been himself and getting away from his brother’s harsh grip. Now that was all Tyler could see. Blindness through abandonment, betrayal and years of Richard’s abusive ways. No matter how hard he worked to tear that blindfold away. Mason guessed he’d been no less blind himself at times but now he liked to think he’d torn all of that away from his eyes. There wasn’t much to thank Katherine for but he supposed that he had to now for making him see again finally.
Eyes cutting past Matt to the bar where he’d spoken to her months before, Mason swallowed convulsively. Then Katherine had cast a light on Tyler and what he could easily stumble into. There were plenty of things in town like her prepared to take advantage of a young, cursed werewolf if his own anger didn’t trigger him first. An unthinkable fate that Mason practically had to push away with both hands.
He let out a low noise of frustration as he let the hands he’d spread in the air fall back to the edge of the table. Eventually, that was what he was worried about. Mason huffed out a breath. ”Keep butting my head against the wall until it gives.” Sooner or later one of them would break and there was no way he could let it be him. As a teenager he’d had Maya then when the world crumbled. They’d shored one another up, patched up those gaps each time despite their parents trying to tear them apart. ”Don’t let him push you away either,” Mason told him softly, his eyes going serious. Stuff happened, even between friends and it could put cracks in that were almost unhealable. He’d lucked out there with Maya, she’d forgiven him for leaving faster than Tyler had.
It seemed like Matt was holding onto a little resentment towards him on Tyler’s part too. Mason slumped slightly in his chair, the bitterness giving way to an exhaustion. He’d tried to give Tyler every excuse he’d came up with since he’d driven out of Mystic Falls but none of them were good enough. That exhaustion went bone deep as he shook his head. ”That’s what it’s getting now and I know it might be too late but it’s all I can do. I can’t turn the clock back and change things .. trust me if I could, I would’ve done in a heartbeat.” Wiping away everything that had happened in Miami. Jimmy would’ve still been alive, Tyler wouldn’t be fighting him so hard now and maybe it would’ve been generations more before another Lockwood was turned.
Now he didn’t just have Tyler to worry over but his niece too, even if she was spending most of the year at the fancy school Richard had gotten her into in the first place. As Matt hit the nail on the head over her Mason chuckled weakly, shook his head. ”They never did, not even when they were kids. I’m trying to do my best by both of them now.” The steady job, people around him who weren’t gonna lead him straight back into his own ways. Maybe there was still a desire to flee town, leaving Katherine in his rear view mirror, but as he pushed to his feet, Mason’s only intention was heading back to the mansion. ”I hope you’ll call about him … watch out for him Matt.” Mason clapped a hand on the kid’s shoulder. Chances were slim but Matt seemed to care, he’d wanna keep Tyler safe. It made two of them and he felt the weight of it on his shoulders as he headed towards the door.
