Frowning, Mason studied the sidewalk outside the grill as he climbed out of the truck. At this time in the afternoon the place was usually starting to fill with the High School crowd. It was like clockwork and had been since long before even he’d rushed out of school looking for somewhere to blow off a little steam with his buddies. Richard had never bothered with the place much, choosing to spend time with Carol elsewhere. That had probably been what had held the appeal for me, the chance to be out from under his brother’s shadow, avoiding the pressure of the Lockwood name. The Grill had been the place where he’d had his first kiss, in the back booth with Lisa DeLuca when they’d both been 13, it’d been where he’d had his first illegal drink too, Howie Burke stealing a half bottle of beer while his dad’s back had been turned. Nights had been spent there enjoying those milestones and hell, nothing much had changed. He’d lost count of the number of nights he’d spent there since he’d retuned to town – drowning his sorrows, trying to find semblance of the life he’d lost on the night Katherine Pierce had forced him to kill one of his best friends. It had slipped from his grip that night, falling through fingers metaphorically covered in blood and every time he’d made a grab for it since Mason had found himself grabbing his old life instead.
With no sign of his nephew amongst those making their way up the sidewalk towards the town’s heart, Mason pushed away from the truck. Carol hadn’t helped. When she’d called him in desperation after Tyler had started to act out she’d made his grip on what he had left even more difficult. How was he supposed to turn his back on his nephew when he was making exactly the same mistakes he had at Tyler’s age? The truth was he couldn’t and so against his better judgment he’d come here to try and steer Tyler away from the minefield. That was proving easier said than done. On the few nights he’d managed to spend with Tyler it had been clear his nephew wasn’t really interested in his council. In the last two weeks he hadn’t managed to spend more than an hour with him before he’d stormed out. Carol was growing desperate and that was increasing the pressure on him to do something. Mason knew he couldn’t do anything without actually being able to talk to Tyler and so he’d come to the one place he thought his nephew was most likely to be. He pushed through the front door of the Grill, immediately side stepping one of the groups of High School students heading for the pool table. No Tyler there, no familiar head of dark hair at any of the tables. Frowning, Mason began to weave his way through them, heading for an empty table near the front of the restaurant. If Tyler ended up here at some time tonight he’d be able to spot him … until then … there were others to talk to. Mason spotted Matt, Tyler’s best friend, as he sat in the seat and extended an arm to stop the kid. ”Hey Matt,” he managed, flashing the kid a half grin. ”You got a minute to talk?” Green eyes cut around the restaurant again. The place was beginning to fill up but table service wasn’t yet in full swing, he figured he could interrupt for a few minutes.

Ever since he woke up in the woods Matt had known that something was different about himself but he was still no closer to figuring out what that was. Every time he closed his eyes he was met with the image of the thing that he had killed and the truth was that he was still having trouble sleeping but a few times the exhaustion had ended up getting too much for him and he had at least been able to get a little sleep. The more time that went by the closer he was to accepting what had happened and talking to Bonnie had helped immensely. It also helped that the thing he had killed clearly wasn’t human, or at least if it had started out that way then it hadn’t been for a long time. He still had yet to talk to Elena about it but Stefan had helped him a little and he was slowly starting to let his old friends back in again. For a while he had felt angry that they had kept the truth about what had happened to Vicki from him but he knew now that they had just been trying to protect him. Now all of the compulsion that had been placed on him had worn off completely and he remembered everything that had happened and everything that he hadn’t been supposed to see. He knew now that they had been trying to preserve his memories of his sister and keep him safe from the danger they faced in Mystic Falls every day so he knew that he couldn’t really blame them for that because deep down he knew that he might have done the same thing if he was in their position. It was still going to take a bit more time before he felt that he could truly trust them again but he was getting there and he was doing his best to make sure that he honed the new skills that he had woken up in the woods with and learned control so that he wouldn’t have to worry about almost hurting anyone again. It wasn’t like Damon hadn’t deserved it but the guy had been trying to help him so Matt knew that he couldn’t afford to let his anger get the better of him again in case he ended up doing something that he might regret later. It was with that in mind that the majority of his time when he wasn’t at school, at work or hanging out with Ty had been spent out in the woods practicing lately but that day Matt had a shift at the Grill that he needed to get through so he at least had something else to focus on for a while. The first hour of his shift was fairly quiet but it was still early so he knew that it was bound to pick up sooner or later. There were a few different places around Mystic Falls to go but the Grill had always been popular and he knew that it would always be that way. So many families tended to go there for a meal at least once a week so he had ended up getting to know some of the faces pretty well. That day there was one in particular that he recognised hanging around but by then things had started to pick up a little and Matt had been called on to cover for someone who hadn’t shown up for work that day so he had been trying to do too much at once. Needless to say he was glad for the excuse to have a break when Mason asked if he had a minute and he smiled at the guy in return. “Hey Mason. Sure,” he nodded before asking the next colleague that passed to let their supervisor know that he was taking his break. “What’s up?”MASON LOCKWOOD

It was easy to think that his life had been a hell of a lot simpler before Katherine had turned up. Truth was, the difficulties had always been there, lurking in the back of the Lockwood family closet but it was easier to ignore those future problems when you had no idea they existed. The way his temper had occasionally faired there was a chance he would have one day triggered the curse but Katherine had made sure it wasn’t just a chance, it was a certainty. Mason knew she wouldn’t have balked at the idea of doing the same to Tyler, she admitted as much to him. Tyler had been her backup for the ritual. Only by the grace of Niklaus’ witches and Katherine’s failure to buy her way back into Klaus’ good books, had someone else been used to break the spell placed on the Original hybrid by his own mother. The threat to Tyler’s life might have been temporarily removed but he wasn’t about to trust that it meant Tyler would remain safe. Mason had seen with his own eyes just how angry Tyler was in the wake of Richard’s death. Chances were better than even that his nephew was going to get himself in over his head at some point soon and would do something all of them would regret. A part of him had hoped that Tyler was going to be hovering around the pool table when he’d arrived but he was nowhere to be seen. If he stayed gone all night, like he had done far too often lately, his mom’s fears would turn into all out panic. Tyler was skirting too close to a slippery edge and they all knew it.
Green eyes had swept the Grill when he’d walked in, trying to pick out a head of dark hair amongst the crowded tables but there wasn’t a sign of Tyler. He’d probably taken off for somewhere more private, knowing that his uncle was hovering somewhere around, trying to keep him on a straight and narrow path that was probably more slippery than the edge Tyler was careening towards. There would’ve been too much of Richard in him if he didn’t give it a try though. Finding himself a seat in the crowded Grill, Mason had managed to spot the one person who probably had a clue about what was going on with Tyler. He’d remembered the Donovan kid from when he’d last left town and it didn’t take long back in Mystic Falls to figure out who was important in his nephew’s life these days. Blowing out a breath, Mason nudged out the chair opposite him with one booted foot as Matt got someone to pass on the message to the supervisor that he was taking a break. As the waitress moved away from their table, Mason leaned forward, propping his forearms on the edge of it as he studied the kid in front of him. ”Thanks for indulging me,” he said honestly. ”I take it Tyler’s been venting to you about me deciding to stick around in town. I’ve been trying to watch out for him since I got back but he’s not been making it easy.” That was the understatement of the year, Tyler was making it impossible. Sighing, Mason scrubbed a hand over his hair. ”He hasn’t been home most evenings. You got any idea where he’s been heading off to?” With Matt seemingly working his ass off here at the Grill to take care of himself, word had it that Kelly Donovan had taken off yet again, Mason doubted that Tyler had been hiding out with his best buddy but he still remembered what it was like to be seventeen in this town. Your best buddy always had a clue what you were up to even if you were hiding it from everybody else.

Matt knew that he was lucky to have kept his job after his disappearing act, his boss had been so great at throwing as many shifts his way as possible ever since his mom left and Vicki died and Matt had left him in the lurch. He knew that it wasn’t his fault, after all he hadn’t asked to be taken and turned into whatever the hell he was now but there wasn’t anything he could do to change what had happened so he knew that all he could do was try and find a way to live with all of it. He had killed a creature out in the woods, a creature that had tried to kill him and Damon, but Matt couldn’t shake the feeling that the creature was probably human once too. Matt had never wanted to become a killer, he hadn’t wanted to become like the monsters that he now knew existed, but it had been a case of kill or be killed and he knew that he needed to find a way to come to terms with that. He had done the same thing that had been done to Vicki according to Damon but the nightmares still hadn’t stopped. More than anything Matt was afraid of what he might do next after he almost killed Damon so he had been keeping his distance from people as much as possible. It wasn’t easy, his friends kept trying to reach out to him but he knew that he wasn’t ready to talk to anyone just yet. Maybe in time he would be but right now he knew that he just needed to try and get his life back on track. He needed to focus on making up for the time that he had lost at school and get on top of his schoolwork so that he could graduate with everyone else when the time came and he also needed to get back into the routine of work. That was what he was trying to do that day, he had been keeping his head down as he tried to get through his shift in one piece and he had been managing it for the most part but he knew that he couldn’t ignore Mason now that he had showed up wanting to talk. Matt wished that he knew what was really going on with Tyler, he had tried getting him to open up but he had stayed annoyingly tight lipped about it although deep down Matt knew that he shouldn’t really be surprised given that he had been doing exactly the same thing. He hadn’t told Tyler anything he hadn’t already known about what had happened during the time he was missing and he certainly hadn’t told his friend what was going on with him now. He had wanted to tell him the truth but now he knew how Elena and the others had felt when they had decided to keep him in the dark. Matt didn’t want Tyler getting caught up in this world and he knew that he would do everything in his power to protect his friend. “Some nights he stays at my place but most of the time he goes out drinking and heads home with whatever girl he has been hitting on that night,” Matt explained, pretty sure that if anyone would understand then Mason would. “I think he’s angry with you for leaving him here alone. Do you know what his dad used to do to him whenever he did something that Richard didn’t like?”MASON LOCKWOOD

When he’d left town after that last visit home there’d barely been a handful of people he’d regretted leaving behind. Tyler, his pity for his nephew had been immense but Richard had made it clear that how he treated his son was absolutely none of his brother’s business, Jezebelle, stuck with Richard the same way Tyler had been, and Maya. Maya hadn’t deserved him running and not looking back. None of them had but at the time he’d been pretty sure that him being here was only going to make things worse for them all. Mason knew now that it had just been him running away from his brother, from being a Lockwood. Somehow Katherine had known about it all, knowing just who to prey on to get what she wanted out of the Lockwoods. That was on him, as much as him failing to get Tyler to talk to him now was. He was screwing this up, Mason thought as he waited for Matt to make it clear that Tyler had been ragging on about his screw up uncle for days. Carol had called him back and instead of putting his head down and trying to get through to Tyler, he’d gotten mad, had made it seem as though he was putting Jezebelle above him. In Tyler’s place he would’ve been pissed about the whole thing. His nephew hadn’t walked in his shoes though, constantly trying to balance on that line of doing his best. Hell, he didn’t want Tyler walking in his shoes at all. That was the point to all of this.
Leaning forward on the table, Mason was ready to be read the riot act by Matt too but the kid was pretty damn polite about the whole thing. Not exactly narking on his friend, not holding back too much either. If Tyler managed to keep his head the same way they could’ve already had this conversation but Tyler was just like he’d been when Katherine had found him, angry, bitter, just looking for anything that would fill the hole that being a Lockwood had put in him. Mason sucked in a breath, shaking his head lightly. ”I guess the nights at your place were the nights he knew I was at home waiting on him. I tried…” He let his explanation hang, lifting a hand to drag it tiredly over his face. ”I’d take him drunk and pissed that I kicked his girl toy out over ducking me the entire time.” Problem was if Mason was drunk and pissed, it would make the whole conversation a thousand times more difficult and would push Tyler further down that slippery slope. His words caught in his throat as he let out a weary chuckle. Tyler was pissed at him for leaving, he’d doubted the kid had even remembered him when he’d gone. The sound died as he pressed his lips into a thin line. Colour drained out of his face faintly as it set in stony lines. ”I’ve got a pretty good mental image,” he said hoarsely. ”Richard took after our dad. Neither one of them wanted to make it easy.” Mason cleared his throat, staring down at the table before looking back up at Matt. ”Does Tyler know that’s why I left?” he asked, his voice raw. Richard had decreed his son his territory, making it clear that he had no part in raising the boy. His only option after that was to back out … to run again.

Matt had known that there was something different about him ever since he woke up in the woods after being taken from his home and disappearing for a week. He still didn’t know exactly what had been done to him but he knew that he had killed without even thinking twice about it and that was something that he was doing his best to come to terms with. He knew that the creature wasn’t human and would have killed both him and Damon if given the chance but he had still taken a life and that was something that was taking Matt a while to get his head around. What disturbed him more at the moment was the fact that he had almost killed Damon as well. It had been an eventful day to say the least, when Damon found him the guy had told him that he had been missing for a week and that was also the day that he had learned that Damon was the reason that Vicki was dead. Deep down Matt knew that in a way his actions would have been justified if he had killed Damon but that wasn’t who he was. He would fight tooth and nail to protect the people he loved but he wasn’t the kind of person who killed anyone and the fact that he had killed the creature was enough to scare him a little. He had no idea what he was capable of right now and he knew that he needed to figure it out but for now at least he was doing his best to focus on something else. With Vicki dead and his mom gone he didn’t even have any distractions to look forward to when he got home so for the most part he tried to pick up extra shifts when he could not just so that he could earn some more money to try and make ends meet but also so that he wouldn’t have to spend too much time at home alone and thankfully he had been able to pick up a shift that day. It had been busy earlier in the day but now things had slowed down a bit so Matt didn’t feel guilty at all about taking a break so that he could talk to Mason. Matt hadn’t seen as much of his best friend lately and he had a feeling that that perhaps had something to do with the fact that Mason was now in town. Ty had stayed over some nights but now it had been a few days since Matt had last seen his best friend and he couldn’t deny that he was worried. He knew how angry Ty was that Mason hadn’t shown up for his dad’s funeral and Matt knew that his friend was still angry with him now. He knew that Ty’s dad wasn’t always a nice man, he had always been good at putting on a front when there were people around that he needed to impress but Matt had seen a different side of him on occasion and he knew that his friend had ended up feeling the brunt of his dad’s temper on more than a few occasions. Matt had tried to keep Ty away from the house as much as possible while his dad was alive and he had been trying to be there for him since he’d died but it wasn’t easy. “He needed you when his dad died but you weren’t there for him. He’s still hurting and he’s lashing out,” Matt explained even though he was pretty sure that Mason knew that already. “Whatever you do just don’t give up on him,” he added. He knew that Mason had a habit of skipping town when things got tough but Ty needed people in his corner so Matt honestly hoped that the guy would choose to stick around this time. “If he does he hasn’t said anything to me about it. All he told me was that you and his dad didn’t get along,” he explained. Matt had always been curious about what had really happened between them but he had always known that it wasn’t his place to ask so he had refrained from doing so. “I’ll try and get him to talk to you but you know what he’s like, he’s stubborn.”MASON LOCKWOOD

Steering clear of Mystic Falls after he’d refused to head out of Miami with Katherine hadn’t come without a healthy dose of guilt. Richard hadn’t deserved any of it, in fact he’d done everything possible to drive a wedge between the two of them before he’d gone and gotten himself killed, but Mason had felt a touch of it for not being there to watch his brother be lowered into the ground. It wasn’t that he’d cared all that much for Richard’s sake, karma had finally caught his brother up after all, it had mainly been for Tyler. Once upon a time he’d tried to protect his nephew from his brother, knowing exactly how Richard was treating him. What he got in return for his concern was a warning never to come near the boy again and a split lip that had bled every time he spoke for three days. Mason had known that him sticking around wasn’t going to do much for Tyler, short of a call to social services nothing would change anything and even then who would look at a family like the Lockwoods and believe that there was anything untoward going on behind closed doors. There was regret over that now, lodged in the pit of his stomach like ice. He could’ve come back, fallen on his sword and protected Mason then or after Richard died but he’d stayed away and things had only gotten worse. Talking things through with Maya when he’d gotten back had eased some of it but until he managed to track Tyler down and get things sorted between them Mason knew he was never gonna get rid of that feeling.
It sank down deep now as Matt practically tore a strip off of him for what had happened. Mason could’ve told the kid not to open his mouth about things he knew nothing about but like he had with Maya over a decade ago, Tyler had confided in his friend. That meant Matt knew more about his nephew than he did right now. Swallowing hard, Mason let his head hang slightly. He stared at the sugar in the shaker on the table, then lifted his gaze to Matt again. ”I had my reasons for that,” he said hoarsely. ”Things were happening where I was and me coming back would’ve made them worse. I want to apologise to Tyler and make up for this somehow.” Tyler still needed him and no matter how hard he had to fight to do that, Mason knew he’d done it. One corner of his mouth curved up for a moment. ”Trust me, I have no plans to. I’m not leaving town and even if he ducks me for the next decade, I’m not gonna give up.” He had to stop Tyler from making the same mistakes he did, from becoming who he now was. Mason drew in a deep breath that had his shoulders slumping. Reaching for the sugar shaker in his hands, he slowly turned it, making the grains inside tumble around. ”Last time I was here Tyler was 7. I figured I’d come visit, play the cool uncle for a couple of weeks. While I was there Richard started in on Tyler. I tried to step in, talk Richard out of what he was doing. He swung for me instead, punched me in the face, warned me that it would be worse if I tried telling him how to raise his son again. I didn’t want to make things worse for Tyler by sticking around.” Maybe there’d been a little about wanting to escape the family too but concern for Tyler had overridden anything then. Huffing out what might’ve been amusement, Mason managed a grin. ”It’s in the Lockwood DNA. We’re all mules when it comes to people trying to get us to do stuff we don’t want to. Can I give you my number, get you to call me when he turns up again?” That would be ratting on a friend but Mason hoped that Matt knew that this was him having Tyler’s best interests at heart.

Lately Matt had been doing his best to get his head around everything that had happened and work was proving to be a pretty good distraction. There were times when he was still plagued with nightmares over what had happened the day that Damon had found him out in the woods but he was doing his best to get over it and he knew that that had to count for something. Ever since his mom left town and Vicki died he had been on his own and he had been doing his best to get by without relying on his friends too much. He had never been the kind of guy who was comfortable taking handouts from the people that he cared about so holding down a job and working as many hours as he could to make sure that he could put food on the table and keep a roof over his head was something that he knew that he needed to do. Matt knew that the place he lived in wasn’t that great and it definitely wasn’t as nice as the homes that his friends all lived in but to him it was home and he knew that he didn’t want to give that up. The house was full of memories, both good and bad, but it was the house where he and Vicki had both grown up so he had known that he was going to do everything in his power to make sure that he was able to hold onto it. He was only renting and he knew that his landlord could be a bit of a nightmare at times but the guy seemed to see that he was trying and for that Matt was grateful. He was doing his best to make ends meet and he knew that he would continue to do so. That didn’t mean that it was easy but he was trying his best to juggle everything and so far he seemed to be making it work. He had been keeping his distance from most of his friends lately, still not quite ready to forgive them for keeping the truth about what had happened to Vicki from him just yet, but Ty was someone that he had been keeping in touch with and he had been making sure to be there for his friend ever since his dad died. He knew that Ty was struggling and there were things that the guy had done that Matt didn’t necessarily agree with but Ty was his best and oldest friend and that was something that he knew he was never going to turn his back on. They had been there for each other through everything and even though he didn’t know whether Ty was aware of the supernatural world just yet and Matt hadn’t confided in him about the struggles he was facing at the moment it was still a relief to know that he had someone who was on his side no matter what. Matt knew that Mason had stuck around after Richard’s funeral so that he could be there for his nephew and Ty wasn’t exactly making that easy for him but he was still struggling and Matt could definitely understand that. “Maybe so but Ty needed you and you weren’t there. That’s the way he sees it,” Matt shrugged. He understood why, Ty’s relationship with his dad had always been rather toxic but they were still family and his presence was one that Matt knew Ty was missing in his life. Mason couldn’t replace Richard but Ty needed someone to look up to right now and Mason was the best one to fill that role so if there was anything he could do to help them get back on track then Matt knew that he would do it. “Good. Chances are he’ll continue ducking you for a while but he needs you even if he isn’t ready to admit it.” Matt knew what that was like, his mom had skipped town after hooking up with Ty while his dad had left town before Matt was even born. He didn’t have the kind of family around him that Ty did and he hoped that in time his friend would let them in because the truth was that he really was lucky to have them. “Did you try to talk to Ty’s mom or anyone else about it?” he asked, feeling anger towards Ty’s dad starting to build within him. He had seen the way that Ty’s dad was around him before but he hadn’t known that it had started that young although it definitely explained a lot. “I bet if Ty knew you’d tried to stop his dad then he’d probably stop dodging you.” It wouldn’t help with the fact that Mason had still left Ty to incur Richard’s wrath alone but if he had worried that he would make it worse then it at least explained why. As Mason asked if he could give him his number for when Ty showed up again, Matt nodded. “I can’t promise I’ll be able to get him to talk to you but I’ll try. Family is important and I think he knows that deep down.”MASON LOCKWOOD

Selfish. Both Richard and his parents had thrown the word around when he’d decided not to head to law school after college or return home. Lockwoods were supposed to remain pillars of the town, the legal and moral backbone of the place. They weren’t supposed to abandon their responsibilities and bum around the country for years, spending the family money. If Richard hadn’t been the first born and such a perfect son his parents would’ve undoubtedly hunted him down to bring him back. Richard had been the golden boy though, basking in their parents’ approval while the black sheep had continued life as a beach bum from one end of the country to the other. Even after their parents had died Mason hadn’t regretted one moment of breaking away from family tradition. There’d only been two people he had regretted leaving behind – Tyler, because his nephew hadn’t deserved to feel the weight of that pressure the same way he had – and Maya, who had been there beside him no matter how often their parents had tried to separate the two of them. Maybe Maya had been old enough to understand why the hell he hadn’t been able to stay but Tyler had been a kid then, was just a teenager now. Undoubtedly the minute he’d left the house on the day he and Richard had argued his brother had been bad mouthing him to his son, planting lies in Tyler’s head the way the family always had done. Don’t be like your uncle, look at how little he gives a damn about his family. Mason knew that he hadn’t done much to change that on the surface but when you couldn’t trust yourself not to lose it and tear people apart on the full moon how were you supposed to make sure someone else didn’t make that mistake?
He still wasn’t sure what sort of role model he was gonna be for Tyler but Mason had known the minute that Carol had called that he needed to try and do something. Time and again he’d failed, seemingly only pushing Tyler further away from him. Speaking to Matt was probably only going to push him away further but Mason didn’t know what else he could’ve done. He stared at the kid, his lips pressed in a thin line as he nodded. ”That’s my fault,” he admitted, knowing that saying it aloud still wouldn’t make much difference here. ”I screwed up and I’m gonna be the first to admit it if he gives me the chance.” They hadn’t been able to get past the arguments to the apologies though. Mason’s throat worked as he swallowed, the faint smile fading away as he sighed. ”It makes two of us. I needed the wake up call, Tyler might not’ve liked me getting it but we both need this now.” He needed to make sure he got through to Tyler before the temper that was boiling away in him spilled over and he made a mistake he wasn’t able to take back. Weary laughter rolled out of Mason’s mouth before he could dial it back. ”You honestly think Ty’s mom would listen to anything like that. She doesn’t live in a vacuum, she knew everything that was going on in that house.” Carol had taken Richard’s place on the Founder’s Council, she knew everything. Even back then Mason had known there was no way of getting between them. ”He won’t talk to me long enough for me to get it out. It’s not exactly the sort of thing you blurt the minute you see someone.” Maybe that would be the only way he was gonna get through to Tyler though. Mason snagged a napkin out of the holder. ”I hope so. You got a pen?” He lifted his gaze to Matt, glad that he was going to at least try and get through to Ty for him. Even if he didn’t call it was a start.

Matt was still trying to come to grips with what had been done to him and he was still trying to figure out exactly what that was but he knew that there were others who had problems to deal with right now as well. He had been keeping a distance from most of his friends while he tried to figure things out but Ty had stuck by him and Matt had been doing his best to help him after the guy lost his father. He knew that Richard had never been the best father in the world, he’d had a temper and he’d taken it out on Ty on more than a few occasions from what Matt had been told but it was clear to him that his friend had still always cared about what the guy had thought. Ty had wanted his approval even if he hadn’t necessarily been prepared to admit it and Matt knew that Richard’s death had hit him hard. Not knowing what had really happened or why he had died probably wasn’t helping matters since it all sounded so suspicious but Matt was going his best to help Ty through it and he hoped that he was helping get his friend’s life back on track. The fact that Mason was hear reaching out to him in the first place was enough to tell Matt that the guy truly did care about Ty and wanted to help him but he knew that getting Ty to let him do that was going to be much easier said than done. He knew his friend was hurt that Mason wasn’t there after Richard died and that he wasn’t there for the funeral so a part of Matt wondered whether his friend thought that it was a case of Mason doing too little too late but family was family and Matt knew just how important it was to have them around so he hoped that Mason would be able to get through to Ty and get the guy to let him in. It was clear to him that Mason had to be desperate if he was reaching out like this and Matt wasn’t even sure that it was a good idea for him to be getting involved in the first place but he knew that he had to try. Right now Ty was spiralling and Matt had seen that happen to others that he cared about too many times to want his best friend to go through that as well. He had lost too many people already and he refused to lose Ty as well so if there was something that he could do in order to talk some sense into his friend then Matt knew that he would do it. “You did and I think he’s still hurt about it, that’s why he’s pushing you away,” Matt admitted. Ty had never been great at talking about what was going on with him but then again neither of them ever had been. They were always there for each other no matter what though and if making Ty see that he needed his uncle in his life was something that needed to be done then Matt knew that he would do his best. “All you can do right now is keep chipping away at him and keep letting him know that you’re here and you’re not going anywhere. Once he knows that hopefully he’ll reach out.” It wasn’t going to be easy and Matt wasn’t sure whether or not Mason truly intended on sticking around and not giving up on Ty but he was pretty sure that it was the only way that his friend was going to let him back in. “And she just let it happen?” Matt asked, feeling his blood starting to boil at the thought. He had always thought, hoped, that Carol hadn’t known what Richard was doing. Ty had never said anything about her knowing and Matt knew how calculating Richard could be when he wanted to be so he had thought that perhaps she was being kept in the dark about what Ty was going through too but now he wasn’t so sure. “Maybe he would listen if you tried,” Matt offered. It was a long shot but it had to be worth a try. As Mason grabbed a napkin and asked if he had a pen, Matt nodded and pulled one out of his pocket. “Here.”MASON LOCKWOOD

Getting what was tantamount to family counselling from Kelly Donovan’s kid seemed like it should’ve been ludicrous. As a single parent Kelly hadn’t exactly been the world’s best role model. He’d gotten drunk with her a few times here at the Grill when he’d been younger, as most of the kids his age seemed to have done. She’d been slightly older than them but had always been down to party then. These days she wasn’t in sight. He’d heard from some of the local gossips here in the Grill that she’d left town, leaving behind her kids. Vicki had died, leaving Matt on his own. The kid was lucky to have a sensible head on his shoulders, it seemed. The Donovans never had the sort of money that would’ve made supporting yourself as a teenager easier. Mason felt faintly guilty for that. Maybe if there’d been a little less privilege in the Lockwood household things wouldn’t have gone the way they had. Richard wouldn’t have swanned around the town as if he owned the place, he wouldn’t have pulled a move like trying to set the Gilbert device. Maybe he wouldn’t have been such an asshole to his son either because when you didn’t have almost endless funds in the bank you didn’t tend towards being an entitled asshole. His reputation in this town had meant everything to Richard. Mason didn’t know why the hell his brother had bothered when the skeletons growling in their family closet were far worse than being arrested for drunk and disorderly or being friends with someone from the wrong side of the tracks was.
Those skeletons only seemed to be growling harder when it came to Tyler these days. Adding the natural anger all Lockwoods seemed to carry with them to the grief of losing a father, even one who you hated, and you had a powder keg. He hadn’t been all that successful but he’d still been trying to keep it from igniting since he’d gotten to town. Mason huffed out a breath as Matt refused to pull the sucker punch he hit him with. ”I figured. All I can do is try and make up for what I did but him pushing me away isn’t making it any easier for either one of us.” He’d keep coming though. This wasn’t like before, he wasn’t about take off out of town after one argument. Propping his hands on his knees, Mason leaned forward and bobbed his head. Green eyes flicked up to meet Matt’s gaze. ”You’ve got a lot of faith in him. He needs someone like that on his side.” He’d always had Maya for that, although he’d managed to screw up there too. Luckily she’d been more forgiving than Tyler was being. He knew she’d help too if he asked but he didn’t imagine Tyler was gonna be any more receptive to her help, despite the way she’d helped him out with Jeze. Richard hadn’t exactly been the best father in the world to her either but she wasn’t going off the rails the way Tyler had, she hadn’t been the one Carol had called him in for. Mason shrugged before he leaned back in the chair, crossing his arms over his chest. ”She wasn’t up to Richard’s level but I can’t see her not having known what her husband was like. Can you?” Maybe he was being too frank with Matt but he wasn’t a typical 18 year old. There was loyalty there for Tyler, but not blind loyalty, he could see what he was trying to do and as much as he could it seemed like he was helping. ”We’ll see,” he said hoarsely. Mason nodded in thanks as he took the pen Matt held out and scrawled his cell number on the napkin. He grabbed a second and pushed it across the table to Matt along with he pen and the one with his number on. ”Wanna give me your cell too?”

As more time went by Matt was starting to wonder if things would ever be able to get back to normal again. Something had been done to him, something that he couldn’t explain, and he knew that his friends had been lying to him for the last year or so at least. He understood why they had done it, they wanted to protect him from what was really going on in the world but to keep what had happened to Vicki from him was something that he couldn’t ignore. They had done it for the right reasons but he knew that it was going to take him time to get his head around it all and right now that was proving to be much easier said than done. So much had changed lately and it was all taking some getting used to, to say the least. The nightmares had subsided but that didn’t mean that he had been able to forgive himself for what he had done that day and that was something that he was trying to deal with but throwing himself into his work helped. He had been doing his best to help Ty with everything that his friend was going through as the truth was that it proved to be the perfect distraction but Ty had never been very good at accepting help and now was no exception. Matt refused to give up on him though, for a while after he found out about Vicki Ty had been the only one that he could trust and Matt still trusted him completely now. Ty had been dragged into the supernatural world the same way that he had been the day his dad died and even though he had yet to trigger his curse Matt knew that with the way his friend was going it probably wouldn’t stay that way for long so chances were that sooner or later they were going to end up navigating the supernatural world together. Matt wasn’t the only one who was looking out for Ty, though, Mason wanted to do the same and that was something that Matt couldn’t ignore. He knew that Ty wasn’t going to make it easy for his uncle but at the end of the day Matt knew what it was like not to have any family around whatsoever and he had learned better than to take the people that he did have for granted. He didn’t want Ty to end up alone like he was, Matt wanted his friend to be happy surrounded by people that cared about him so he hoped that in time he would see sense and let Mason in and Matt was going to do what he could in order to help him do that. “It’s his way of protecting himself. If he doesn’t let you get close to him then you can’t hurt him the way that his dad did,” Matt shrugged. Ty had never said it as such but Matt knew that that was exactly what his friend was doing because the truth was that he had done it himself. He had pushed all of his friends away after Damon found him in the woods and he was still pushing them away to an extent now but it was something that he wanted to work on changing. “He’s always had my back so it’s only fair that I have his,” he admitted. Ty had been there for him more times than he could count and he had given him a place to stay when things had ended up getting too much with his mom and all of her various sleazy boyfriends over the years so Matt knew that he owed Ty in a way and he knew that he was never going to give up on his friend. “You might be right,” he said at last. It made sense that Carol would know but if he was honest it was something that Matt hadn’t wanted to think about. He had wanted Ty to have one decent parent that always had his back no matter what but it seemed that he couldn’t have that either. Taking the napkin from Mason, Matt nodded as the guy asked for his cell number too. “Sure,” he said as he jotted it down for him. “Can I get you anything else?”MASON LOCKWOOD

Tyler hadn’t seen him in years and yet when it came to dealing with their problems, the two of them ended up reacting exactly the same way. Run. Arguing with a Lockwood never worked. Whether it was the werewolf DNA or just the fact that they were all stubborn assholes at heart, Mason didn’t know. All he could see was Ty ending up going down the same twisted path he’d taken. Maybe if he’d ended up doing what his parents wanted he wouldn’t have fallen foul of Katherine, maybe if he’d ended up not getting in Richard’s face about how he was taking care of his son things would’ve worked out differently for Tyler. Deep down though, he was pretty sure that one way or another his brother still would’ve ended up six feet underground. The choice to set off the Gilbert Device had been his, although Katherine honestly couldn’t have set it up better. Richard had to have at least guessed at what was in their DNA and by the end he had to have realised the power the device had over it. His brother had died taking out his hatred on others. It reeked of karma. No matter what he’d done Tyler didn’t deserve to be tarred with that same brush. Even if it took years of chasing his nephew around the town trying to get him to open up, he’d do it to make sure Tyler was safe.
At this point it was honestly looking like it make take that long. He’d come to the Grill, hoping to get instant answers out of Matt, instead he’d gotten a dose of the sort of wisdom most teenagers couldn’t even imagine. With his own home situation it was no wonder Matt had developed it though. Sadly, it felt a little like the kid was talking from bitter experience. Mason’s jaw flexed as his hands came up as though he had to ward off the accusation. ”He’d never have to worry about that from me. I’m gonna try and make him see that. If he asks you though…” Having someone tell you third hand someone wouldn’t hurt you wasn’t easy to believe though. Actions had always spoken louder than words and the only action Tyler had ever seen from him was retreat. Mason’s fingertips bit into his knees as he studied the kid in front of him. ”You’re a good friend.” As Maya had always been for him, even if he hadn’t deserved it at times. His throat worked as he thought about what Carol had allowed to happen. ”I know I am,” Mason admitted on a sigh.
It didn’t matter now. Carol had called him and this was his chance to make it up to Tyler. Drawing in a breath, Mason scrubbed a hand over his short hair as he watched Matt jot his cell phone number down on the napkin. At least he had a better chance now, with Tyler’s best friend at least partly on his side. As Matt passed it back and asked if he could get him anything else Mason realised he hadn’t ordered anything. He let out a sigh, tipping his chin towards the bar. ”Two chicken alfredos to go?” he asked. ”Thanks. I should at least take dinner home when I go. I don’t know if Ty told you, I’ve got our cousin’s kid living with me now …” Now that Richard was gone. The man had been a dreadful father but his death had still left behind a vacuum and that was one he had to fill now, no matter how much he wanted out of this town.

While he as growing up Matt had always envied his friends who’d had their parents around them, even crappy ones like Ty’s dad. His friends had at least had the luxury of returning home knowing that there was food in the cupboards and fridge and that they weren’t going to have to scrape together money for that or to make sure that the rent was paid on time to avoid being kicked out. Matt hadn’t had a childhood like that, his dad had bailed before he was even born and his mom had always been flaky. Holding down a job wasn’t something that Kelly Donovan was ever very good at and from a young age Vicki had been left to look after him. It was no surprise that she had turned to drink and things given the only role model that they had and Matt wouldn’t have been surprised if everyone around him had expected him to turn out the same way but he had realised a long time ago that he had wanted to be better than that. Instead he had started working odd jobs to earn some money as soon as he was old enough and as it was he had been working at the Grill for the last few years. It wasn’t easy earning enough to put food on the table and keep a roof over his head as a teenager but Vicki was gone and he had told his mom not to come back after he’d found her hooking up with his best friend so he was doing his best to make things work. “Maybe not but I bet it still hurt him when you left,” Matt shrugged. People leaving always hurt, that was something that he knew firsthand. He had told his mom to leave but it had still hurt like hell when she actually did it and as for Vicki, it had been years since she’d died but he still missed her every day. “If he asks I’ll put in a good word but actions speak louder than words.” What Ty needed was to see that Mason wasn’t going to abandon him again and when he finally realised that then he had a feeling that things would be a lot better between the two of them. “He’s more than a friend, he’s family,” Matt shrugged. Ty had been his best friend for a long time and even though the two of them had fought more than a few times over the years, especially when Matt had found out that his mom was hooking up with Ty, they had always managed to get through it. Now that Matt no longer had any family of his own his friends had taken that place in his life and he knew that he was much better off with them in his corner. As Mason said he knew he was right about Carol, Matt found himself studying the guy carefully for a moment. “Then why didn’t you do something about it?” he asked. If he had done then perhaps things wouldn’t have gotten as bad. More than a few times over the years Matt had found himself wondering what might have happened if someone had stepped in with his own family but instead he and Vicki had been left to fend for themselves while everyone else had turned a blind eye. “No, he didn’t. Jeze, right?” he asked as he jotted down Mason’s order. He hadn’t heard that name for some time. “How’s that going?”MASON LOCKWOOD

Richard had known exactly what he was doing when he’d kicked him out of the house. Mason felt the ache of guilt settle like lead in the marrow of his bones as he shifted in his chair under the weight of Matt’s observations. The kid hadn’t been there, Tyler hadn’t been either. They hadn’t heard Richard order him to keep his nose out of what was happening. In that order he’d cut Tyler off from the one person who might’ve called an end to the crap he was pulling on his son … the abuse. Carol sure as hell wasn’t going to. She might’ve worried for her son but she’d never done anything to stop her husband. He was willing to bet that if Tyler hadn’t started rebelling against her too he’d never have gotten the call to come home.
Sucking in a breath, Mason squirmed in his seat again, his hands rubbing tiredly over his face as he dropped them. Green eyes flicked to Matt as he shrugged. He cleared his throat, shaking his head. ”It hurt the both of us,” he admitted hoarsely. It hadn’t stopped him from sticking to Richard’s orders and staying gone though. Katherine had been the only one to threaten to drag him back to town before Richard had gone and done something stupid enough that he’d been killed in the process. Now he was back and he had to make this opportunity to patch things up with and protect Tyler happen. No matter how hard Tyler pushed him away. His hands were spread in the air again, his jaw flexing. ”I’m trying to do and not just say and I’ll carry on trying.” It was harder said than done when you were literally talking to dead air. Maya would’ve told him that eventually he’d break through that brick wall and Matt seemed to be saying the thing but it didn’t make the constant struggle any easier.
Mason bobbed his head slowly, curling his arms across his chest. His boots scuffed the floor under the table, his gaze flicking around the Grill and the diners who were likely trying harder to pretend they weren’t listening than they were actually keeping their ears closed until it settled back on Matt. ”I’m glad he has you.” His having had Maya the same way growing up had been the only thing keeping him sane at times. Both of them had been ordered away by their respective parents but they’d never listened. She was his biggest cheerleader now with Jezebelle, the person kicking his ass at work, the one pulling his head out of his ass metaphorically when he started to guilt trip. It wasn’t guilt in his laugh now, more a thin thread of bitterness. ”You honestly think I could’ve called in social services? Reported my brother for abuse, tried to get Tyler out of there or convinced Carol to leave him?” Nope, Mason shook his head, gritting his teeth. The Lockwood name still held some power in this town. As mayor Richard would’ve squashed the entire idea, painted his little brother as the screw up trying to take some sort of revenge out on the family.
It was only now that he was slowly rebuilding his reputation and proving that he was a decent guy. One willing to work hard instead of resting on his family’s laurels, the one trying to pull his family back together. Mason propped his forearms on the edge of the table as he managed a faint smile for Matt. ”Yeah,” he admitted. ”Jezebelle. She was my cousin Gracie’s kid. Richard had her boarding at some fancy school.” Letting out a long breath, he shook his head slightly. Admitting to your best friend that you had no clue what you were doing was very different to telling some kid you barely knew. ”Better than I thought. Hopefully it shows Ty that I do give a damn, that I want to do better for both of them.” And maybe it would do the opposite, leaving Tyler believing that he’d been replaced. That his uncle gave more of a damn about his cousin than him.
