Claire always preferred working her shifts with Ares since they always went a lot quicker and were a lot more fun than when she was on her own but he had the day off that day so she had to make do taking the calls that she could either handle on her own without drawing any unwanted attention to herself or ones where she could provide backup for some of her colleagues. The call at the Grill had caught her attention and she had known that it was something that she could help with so she had headed there only to find Mason in the thick of it. She knew that she shouldn’t really be surprised, after all a bad temper came with the territory of being a werewolf, but he was doing his best to keep it in check and that much was obvious. She knew him well enough to know that he wouldn’t get involved with a fight without a good reason for it and the bartender had backed up his story so she had no problem with letting him walk away from this without any problems whatsoever. Had it been anyone else then they might have insisted in hauling Mason down to the station for his part in the fight but that wasn’t Claire and she knew that it just wouldn’t be worth it in the long run. “That would be appreciated,” Claire nodded. “I could just compel her but I’d rather not,” she added. She knew what Mason was and he knew what she was in return. She could have kept it a secret the first time they met but Mason had been open with her and she had known that it wouldn’t be fair for her to keep the truth from him. In a way it was a relief to know that there was someone else in town who knew what she was and in situations like this it definitely helped. She had adopted Stefan’s diet of animal blood after she became a vampire which meant that her compulsion wasn’t as strong as other vampires who drank human blood in some form but it was good enough for the little she actually used it although if she could get the bartender to make a statement of her own accord then she knew that that would be the much better option. “A statement about the assault on the bartender would help if we can encourage her to press charges. Adding in the assault on you might make it more serious for him but it might also get you in trouble and we don’t want that,” she admitted, knowing that the last thing she wanted was for Mason to get in any kind of trouble for his part in this too given his past. Nodding as Mason said that he didn’t plan on letting his niece down, Claire headed back to the station and did what she needed to before heading out to the parking lot once she was officially free for the day. “You can drive, I think drinking has got you into enough trouble today,” Claire said, a teasing smile forming on her face as she looked over at him. If he wanted her to drive instead she knew that she wouldn’t really mind but she liked the idea of having a night off after the shift she’d had. “Now you’re really spoiling me,” she said, her smile turning genuine as she thought about it for a moment. “I’m not really in the mood to head back to the Grill and the Diner isn’t that great, how would you feel about Italian and if you don’t have to rush off after that we can always head to Campbell’s for a drink?”MASON LOCKWOOD

What had happened with Katherine in Florida had left him gun shy when it came to the cops. Katherine had manipulated it so what happened to Jimmy had been painted as a tragic accident, not the manslaughter it had really been, but there’d been a chance from the moment he’d refused to go with it that somehow she’d undo whatever she’d done so the cops came after him again. It wasn’t like the fight had happened in a sealed room, others had been around that night, even if they hadn’t been privy to everything going on outside the bar. Trouble could have found him. For months afterwards he’d held his breath every time he’d heard sirens afterwards. It wasn’t the same in Mystic Falls but he still could’ve been gun shy about doing anything that put the eyes of the law on him. When he’d seen the guy set hands on the bartender Mason had known he couldn’t.
He wasn’t that guy, he didn’t want to be that guy. The one who just sat by and let anybody get hurt. Not again.
Claire had gone above and beyond to help make sure he could be that better guy. Her offer now had him swallowing hard, nodding slowly as he looked away from the bartender. Compulsion was never gonna sit well with him, not after what Katherine had done with the ability. ”I’ll have a word,” he promised, his lips twitching faintly as the bartender turned towards them and met his eye. He had a feeling she wasn’t going to want the guy back in here anymore than he did, the cops could help make that happen. Mason lifted his hands slightly at Claire’s clarification on just how much he was going to help. ”If it’s gonna help I’ll do it. I don’t wanna get in over my head but he shouldn’t get to do that again.” That was going to be down to the bartender and the cops at the end of the day but if this guy walked it wasn’t gonna sit well with him. Hell, it was going to poke at his temper until he had to find some way to bleed it off that wasn’t gonna get him in the sort of trouble he was trying to avoid.
Straightened up, cooled off, he’d headed over to the station to meet Claire. Any sign on him of anything that had happened in the bar was already gone. Werewolf healing had its benefits even if most of the curse was just that. Mason straightened up as Claire emerged, gave her the option of whether or not she wanted to drive. His smile slanted crooked as he pulled his keys out of his pocket. ”We both know I could have drunk half of the Grill’s stock and still been OK to drive…” he admitted, holding his hands up as he went to adjust. ”But I wouldn’t have done. I don’t drink and drive.” It was another risk he wasn’t willing to take, not when he had to be a good influence to both Tyler and Jeze. He had to stay straight for the pair of them. Shoulders shrugging under his shirt Mason popped the passenger door for Claire to get in. ”I figured it’s the least I could do. Italian and Campbell’s sounds good to me. Is Genaro’s still the best place to go for decent pizza around here?” Once upon a time he’d known every inch of this town and the businesses that flourished and failed here. Heading away from home had done more than ruin his relationship with his nephew though, it had left that information spotty.

Days at work without Ares were never as much fun as they were when her partner was around but Claire knew that he deserved some time off so she was happy to make do without him. She could have ended up with a temporary partner for the day but she had decided to go it alone instead. It hadn’t been that eventful a day but she had ended up taking more than enough calls to keep her busy and as soon as the call had come in about a disturbance at the Grill she had known that she’d had to check it out. Something often seemed to happen there and Claire had learned a long time ago too expect the unexpected around Mystic Falls but thankfully that day it had ended up just being another jerk having too much to drink and thinking that he could get his way with one of the staff. That seemed to be the norm a lot of the time and thankfully the others had arrived on the scene before anyone had ended up getting seriously hurt. As soon as she had seen that Mason was involved she had known that he would have done the right thing by trying to help and it looked like she had been right about that after all. It would have been easy for anyone who didn’t know Mason as well as she did to jump to the wrong conclusion about him but it was easy enough to clear up and soon enough her friend was free to go if he wanted to. “It’s the best chance we’ve got of making sure that he doesn’t do something like this again. Either way he’ll spend a night in the cells so he can sober up but I’ve seen him in there before so it didn’t do much good. He needs something more to give him a wake up call.” It was impossible to get through to people like that by letting them get away with it but unfortunately without people coming forward to make statements and press charges there wasn’t much else that they could do. She hoped that the bartender would do the right thing but Claire knew that she couldn’t influence her decision either way so after speaking to the woman and giving her the options she headed back to the station. It wasn’t long before she was able to get changed and head out to meet Mason and his words were enough to make her smile. “Maybe so but it wouldn’t look like that to anyone who doesn’t know what you are,” she shrugged. Anyone else would have thought that he was just good at hiding the fact that he’d had too much to drink and it was definitely better to avoid questions like that. Climbing into the truck, Claire closed the door behind her. “Definitely. Nowhere else even comes close,” she admitted as he asked if Genaro’s was still the best place for pizza. “Have you been there since you’ve been back?”MASON LOCKWOOD

This could’ve ended so much worse. Mason was infinitely grateful it hadn’t. The fight had been broken up before he’d been pushed to really hurt the idiot who’d gotten handsy with the bartender. Forbes’ people had arrived quickly enough that the situation hadn’t reached boiling point again as the guy had sat there bleeding and ticked off and when it came down to it Claire had been watching his back. Maybe without a statement from the bartender corroborating his story he still would’ve been able to walk away from it but if there was one thing he knew it was that you couldn’t take anything as certain in this world. He’d seen too many situations go south to believe that, Mason thought, feeling that knot finish slithering free in the pit of his stomach. Too many people had ways of screwing your life up that you never saw coming and fate? Fate was fickle. It liked to yank your strings and keep you off balance. It gave you a little something that seemed incredible just to rip it away again to make sure you knew not to take anything for granted.
Mystic Falls had a tendency to take way more than it gave for sure. Right now Mason was pretty sure the ground was solid under his feet. He’d still walk into his apartment later tonight, probably with some sort of take out for Jezebelle just to make up for what had happened at the Grill. Undoubtedly news of it would get back to her somehow but hopefully she’d hear that what he’d been trying to do was something decent. Mason raked teeth over his lower lip, green eyes studying Claire’s face. One corner of his lips curled up as he brushed his hands over his thighs. ”Anything to make sure he gets it in the end, right? I mean there’s AA and there’s other things to keep him from reaching for bottle.” It wouldn’t have been a guarantee that the guy would never step over boundaries again but maybe there would be a better chance for it if something else happened to him on the way to the cells.
After, when he was sitting there in the parking lot of the station, waiting for Claire to come out Mason wondered whether she’d done what he’d hinted about. She wasn’t like Katherine, she wouldn’t have wanted to take the guy’s free will away but this wasn’t driving someone to fight to the death, it was for the greater good. Something he liked to think he believed in, maybe that was just Maya rubbing off on him again though. He still joked about being able to drink and drive these days thanks to what he was as he headed for the driver’s side of the truck. ”True,” he drawled, holding the passenger side door open for her. ”I’ve got a cop in the truck though. I’m guessing that might’ve counted for something right?” Not if it was the wrong person who noticed. He was trying his best to clean up his act these days though and that meant considering how each action was gonna be seen. Maybe he’d stick with just a single beer over dinner, perhaps something a little stronger at Campbell’s afterwards.
Genaro’s had always been one of the teen hangouts when he’d been growing up, less visible than the Grill, which meant somewhere he and Maya could go and get away from their parents. Mason shook his head at Claire’s question as he got in and started up the truck. ”I’ve driven by but I haven’t been in. I guess it’s something I should’ve introduced Jeze too but she’s into other stuff.” Japan, the sort of food you couldn’t get for love nor money in Mystic Falls. ”I think I used to have an addiction to their pepperoni.” Those Friday nights spent there with Maya, grease from the pizza running down their wrists as the two of them had dreamed of getting away from the town.
