Moving home to the Lockwood grand palais had been a mistake. Mason had known it when he’d started to stuff more than a weekend’s worth of clothing into a duffel bag, he’d known it when he’d crossed the town line and had avoided going straight to the mansion he’d grown up in to drop his stuff off, he’d known it the minute that bit of avoidance had reunited him and Katherine. He didn’t regret it half as much as he had after he’d sat down with Carol that afternoon to hear that there’d been another report of Mason acting out at school. Much more of this and he was going to have to do more than stand around and play the fun uncle. His sister-in-law, just as ruthlessly as Richard ever had, cut him off at the knees. There was no more being the fun uncle, that ship had sailed the moment that Richard’s attempt to take out every vampire in the town had left Tyler without a father. He’d plenty willing to tell Carol that their son was better off that way but that was an argument Mason hadn’t wanted to get involved in. The only reason he’d come back here was to watch out for Tyler and that was what he planned to do. What Carol thought of him while he did didn’t matter, Richard’s thinking had obviously coloured enough of her opinion that she was never going to think of him of the prodigal son returning home. He was the best of the bad options in a seriously crappy situation, probably the only way that she was going to stop her son from triggering the curse that lay in his DNA. Maybe that would’ve been a little easier here if he hadn’t been manipulated into triggering himself.
Katherine had been on his mind as he’d walked out of the house and gone in search of Tyler. Coming back here to do the right thing had meant he was right in the path of the wrong thing again and that meant he had to walk a tightrope the entire time. No screwing up himself, no stepping off of the righteous path or all he’d do was lead Tyler astray. That was easier said than done though. A fruitless two hours had eventually led him to the Grill and a seat at the end of the bar. It was meant to be just for an hour, to see if Tyler would head here to hang out with his buddy the bus boy but while he’d kept an eye on Matt Donovan working Tyler had remained conspicuously absent. Growing grimmer with every passing minute Mason had continued to tap his fingers against the bar almost every time the bartender had looked in his direction.
A half dozen shots down and she’d started delivering beer instead, undoubtedly in an attempt to slow him down. Like that would work. Mason kept an eye on her while she moved up and down the bar, while a pair of guys at the other end blew through Happy Hour in a cloud of cheap bourbon fumes and slowly got more handsy with the bartender. One made a grab for her as she spun out from behind the bar with a pitcher of beer for a table in the corner. She dodged it that time but on the way back the guy took another grab and Mason was out of his stool before sense hit. ”Hey buddy, you wanna keep your hands to yourself?” The guy sneered, a hand reaching out to grab for the woman again. Mason didn’t wait to give another warning, he was swinging, a fist connecting with the guy’s jaw before his buddy leapt in. An arm banded beneath his jaw, hauling him backwards until it could throw him face first into the edge of the bar. Head spinning, vision blurry and red at the edges, Mason began to push himself back up. He was almost there when he saw the uniforms heading in the door. ”You call the cops? Great. You wanna take these guys in for indecent assault?” Mason asked as the guy behind him made to rabbit punch him in the small of the back in one last lesson to keep his nose out of things. He turned, aiming an elbow for the guys nose.

Since moving to Mystic Falls, Claire’s days had become a little predictable. She worked her shifts with Ares by her side and during her free time she often ended up hanging out with him or one of the Salvatore brothers. That day, however, was a little different. Ares had the day off so she was working alone. She knew that she could have asked for another partner for the day or stayed at the station but she never liked being stuck inside when she could be out doing something so she had opted for going out on her own instead. The day started out just like any other with the usual calls needing to be dealt with and she was able to help Detective Adams with something he had been working on but as time went on she headed out again. Mystic Falls was often a quiet town but that day it seemed like call after call had been coming over the radio but nothing out of the ordinary seemed to be going on. Claire knew that the Sheriff and a select group of other officers from the station were always careful to mask anything that might even possibly be related to the supernatural but that day there hadn’t been anything and she couldn’t help but feel a little relieved about that. She knew she was taking a risk by working so close to the Sheriff but she was always careful not to let anyone other than Ares see who she really was and she knew that it was worth the risk to be able to do what she was good at. As the next call came over the radio, an incident at the Grill that required more than one vehicle in attendance, Claire quickly responded to say that she was on her way and a few minutes later she pulled her car into the parking lot and climbed out just in time to join the other two officers as they made their way inside. Straight away they headed in the direction of two of the men leaving Claire to deal with the familiar man before her, a hand quickly shooting out to catch the elbow that had been aiming right for the nose of one of the other guys. “We both know you don’t want to be doing that,” she said, fighting a smile as she found herself face to face with someone from her past. As one of her colleagues pulled the other man away she let go of Mason’s arm. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that you’re involved with this brawl Mason,” she said, this time letting a half smile cross her features as she looked over at him. “Are you alright?”MASON LOCKWOOD

Bringing disrepute to the Lockwood name would’ve been a scandal of epic proportions in Mystic Falls. The founding families of the town were sacrosanct, above the trouble that plagued the area from time to time. Sons and daughters were paragons of virtue, golden children in the eyes of those around them. For Mason the pedestal they wanted to sit him on had just been far too high. He hadn’t been a delinquent, hadn’t been taken to the station and left in a cell overnight, hadn’t ended up in a detox facility, hadn’t skipped too many classes. In any other family he’d have been a near perfect kid but the Lockwoods had other standards. Teenage rites of passage – heading into the cemetery on Halloween, getting stinking drunk at prom, being found making out one of the Fell girls in the basement – they’d all been black marks against him in his parents eyes. It should’ve been enough to send him right off the rails, to prove to them just what real rebellion looked like but Mason had always held back. He hadn’t wanted a criminal record any more than he’d wanted law school or the pressure Richard had on his shoulders. A little approval from his parents would’ve been nice but by the time he’d been old enough to really lash out it’d been obvious that no matter what he did, he was never going to get that. Mason Lockwood, the family disappointment, the first, it seemed, in generations to trigger the curse in their genes, the idiot that got himself played by a vampire harpy and the wannabe hero who was about to get himself taken in by the cops for doing the right thing.
Just his luck. He’d stopped by the Grill to make sure his nephew wasn’t doing anything as stupid as he’d done and he’d dropped himself right into the worst sort of situation. Mason knew he was blessed that his temper hadn’t flared out of control, the last thing he needed to do was go too far here, but the guys who’d been bothering the bartender hadn’t backed down and that meant he hadn’t been able to back down either. Not even when the cops strolled in the door. At that point he’d tried, using his words, pissed as they were, instead of immediately going for the guy with fists, but the other two weren’t going to let him get away clean. Throat aching mildly where he’d been he’d been tossed at the bar, Mason went to elbow the guy who’d gone to hit him. One of the cops stepped in, her hand catching the elbow he’d meant to throw at the asshole now protesting to the cops that he hadn’t been the one to start with. Mason let his hand fall, turning to eye a familiar face with a wry grin. ”Consideirng he was looking to have me pee blood for a week, I’m pretty sure I do,” he drawled grimly. A glance over his shoulder showed him that the other uniforms were separating the guys at least. ”I wasn’t the one that started it,” he drawled as he looked back, his hands rising slightly in a sign of defeat. ”I was sitting there, enjoying a drink or two while I waited for Tyler and those guys decided to start trouble.” One hand dropped while the other went to his throat, massaging the red mark the guy’s arm had left. In a couple of minutes it’d been gone, his body repairing the damage at an incredible rate. ”Got tossed around a little but I think I’ll be alright. Did the bartender call you?” He glanced aside at the blonde, watching her approaching one of the other cops.

Claire had tried lots of different things since becoming a vampire. She had gone back to school and she had tried more careers than she cared to admit but the one thing she had soon found that she enjoyed was being a police officer. She knew that she could have easily advanced through the ranks long before now, using compulsion or fake papers to make her credentials seem more recent and fitting with the age she was pretending to be in whichever place she ended up in but that took a lot of the fun out of it. The truth was she had enjoyed working her way through the police training academy so it was something that she went back to every now and then, passing herself off as just another new recruit looking to learn when in reality she could probably run circles around just about any of the others. It was at the academy the last time she had gone that she had met Ares and even though their friendship should probably be a pretty unlikely one considering what they both were she trusted him completely and he had become one of her best friends so she couldn’t have asked for things to work out any better than they had done when he had moved to Mystic Falls too. Working without him now was a little strange but it was only for one day so she knew that she could cope. One thing she would never do was let Ares know that she had missed him during his day off because she knew that if she said anything then he would be unbearable until she found some way to deflate his ego. That wasn’t always particularly easy but sooner or later something happened that she could use to her advantage. What had happened with the cat he had struggled to get out of the tree was a perfect example and it had been worth the sulking that Ares had done afterwards. Naturally she had cheered him up by taking him to see Remi after their shift and everything had been fine after that. Having finished helping Detective Adams out for the day she had been heading back out on patrol again when the call came over the radio that there was a disturbance at the Grill and as she caught sight of Mason she was glad that she had decided to check it out. The two of them had met some time ago and she considered him a friend so she knew that she had to at least try and keep him out of any more trouble if she could help it. “No you don’t, he isn’t worth spending a night in the cells for and quite frankly I could do without all that paperwork today,” she said, rolling her eyes playfully as she looked over at him. “Yeah, she did. Looks like we got here just in the nick of time too,” she nodded as she pulled her notebook and a pen out of her pocket. “Why don’t you sit down and tell me exactly what happened.”MASON LOCKWOOD

This was his father’s worst nightmare. One of his sons causing a scene in public, blackening the Lockwood name, perhaps adding an arrest to what was supposed to be a pristine record. Too late, Mason thought as he was the officer come in through the door, there were already more than a few smudges on it. Most were of the ‘strike them off the record the minute the kid hit 18’ sort but thanks to Katherine some marks were now a little harder to erase. That was what made this his own nightmare in part. His temper had been a slippery thing since Katherine had pulled her little trick with Jimmy, taking what had been a semi-stable grip on it when he’d been a teenager and turning it into something he constantly had to keep watch over, especially when a full moon was on the way. He’d been feeling pretty proud of himself for not just tearing the guy’s hands off when he’d started putting them on the bartender despite her attempts to shrug the guys off but the moment Claire had arrived the guilt had started to creep up. This wasn’t the sort of example he was meant to be setting for Tyler. Mason knew that his nephew barely knew him and would never view him as some sort of paragon of virtue the way his brother had been but another Richard wasn’t what Tyler needed. An uncle who stood up for people when they were having a hard time standing up for themselves, sure, but not when that attempt had cops coming and a threat of a night in jail hanging over his head.
The only person who might stop that happening now was Claire. It was almost a relief to see her face when he’d turned to see who’d stopped him from elbowing the guy who’d slammed him headfirst into the front of the bar. If there was anybody who’d hear him out here it was Claire. ”Then we can just send those jackasses home and forget this ever happened?” he asked, bringing a hand up to rub at the red mark across the front of his throat. He was still a little hoarse from the blow but like with everything these days, it would heal with the sort of rapidity that everything did. No more papercuts, now he could get ripped to shreds by a reef and be back on his board an hour later with nothing but a torn up wet suit to show for it. Concerned green eyes flicked over the bar, checking that the blonde was OK before he looked back at Claire. ”I’d have stopped it before it went too far. Wouldn’t want to smash up a place I’d want to come back to.” And until he went back home to Florida, this was somewhere he was going to be. Huffing out a breath, Mason reached down and picked up one of the bar stools that had been knocked over in the fight. He righted it, setting himself down uneasily on the edge of it. ”Can I get a drink while I do it?” Mason knew he was pushing it with the request and started in without it. ”It started about an hour ago. Just a few comments at first, she shrugged them off but then about fifteen minutes ago someone decided just hitting on a woman wasn’t enough. Seriously, what’s wrong with guys like that?” As the guy turned, smirking at him as he tipped his head into the light to show the other uniform the bruises that were already blooming around one of his eyes, Mason bared his teeth. No matter what he’d become he’d never done something like that around a woman, the fact that he was just the opposite was what had given Katherine an in to start with.

There was a time when Claire had been used to patrolling on her own but the truth was that ever since she met Ares it had always been the two of them. She knew that Damon didn’t necessarily understand the friendship between the two of them but he at least seemed to respect it and that was all that she could ask for. Ares had been there for her when she’d needed him and they had made it through the police academy so she was always more comfortable when she had him around but she wasn’t afraid to provide backup on her own when she needed to. She hadn’t known what she would find when she got to the Grill after responding that she would take the call but she definitely hadn’t expected to find that Mason had ended up getting into the middle of a fight or that it would still be going on to an extent when she got there. Breaking up the fight was easy enough and Mason knew her well enough by now to know that fighting her on it wasn’t a good idea but even though the two of them were friends she knew that she still needed to do her job properly and make sure that she got his side of the story. She would be the first to admit that she had seen a lot during her time working as a police officer and she had grown used to the supernatural drama side of her job while she was in Mystic Falls as well but this at least seemed to be something ordinary on the face of it, a normal bar brawl that should hopefully be cleared up quite easily. “Not quite, it depends if anyone wants to press charges,” Claire explained. “If nothing else a night in the cells to let them cool off might do some good,” she added. The other guy involved was clearly still wound up and he didn’t seem to be showing any signs of calming down any time soon so she knew that spending some time in a cell might just take him down a peg or two. “It looks like the two of you did a pretty good job of smashing the place up anyway,” Claire admitted as she looked around them. “I take it that was you?” she asked, nodding in the direction of the broken glasses on the bar. Mason hadn’t told her much about what had happened yet but she was starting to get a pretty good idea regardless. “Unfortunately not. You might want to slow down for a bit though, got to keep up appearances,” she offered, knowing that nothing would draw attention to Mason more than him drinking a lot but not even being the slightest bit drunk to show for it. “What can I say, some guys are pigs,” Claire offered with a shrug. “That’s all that happened?” she asked, knowing that she was going to have to check with the bartender and get her side of the story before she was able to let Mason go. “Sounds like she was lucky you were here.” As he bared his teeth at the other guy, Claire patted his shoulder gently. “Don’t give him the satisfaction of rising to it,” she warned, hoping that he would take her advice. He should’ve known better. Fighting was what had gotten him where it was in the first place. Against the traditions his parents tried to wrap him up in, against their expectations, hell, against his better judgment. Losing a temper that had always been slippery and beating a compelled friend to death. A little voice in his head had spoken to him each and every damn time but Mason knew he wasn’t listening to it often enough. If he did he wouldn’t have been sitting here with cops in the Grill, trying to pick apart a fight that he’d started, technically. Being back here was about trying to do the right thing, watching out for Tyler, trying to make sure that Jezebelle ended up in the care of someone who gave a damn. Trying to stand up for the bartender had instantly meant tossing aside all his better judgment. What kind of a good example ended up sitting in jail waiting for someone to bail him out? Carol would probably be Forbes’ first call, his sister-in-law’s face going cold and hard behind the bars if she bothered to turn up at all. His first choice would’ve been Maya, although that same disappointment in him might’ve been there. His best friend had always seen something worthy behind the name and the bluster but an arrest might dull those rose coloured glasses. Mason just hoped that the fact that it was Claire showing up here meant he might not end up going straight to jail for what had happened.
If. It all depended on if the asshole who’d been getting handsy in the first place wanted to push things. Maybe if he put together the guy who’d stopped him and the name Lockwood the guy might just try it. Mason smiled mirthlessly as he dropped his hand away from a throat that would heal practically before anybody but Claire got a look at it. ”Including me?” he asked, knowing that answer was likely to be no. This was a case of he said-he said and he’d definitely come off the better here. Green eyes cut to the guy he’d stopped in his tracks, wondering just how big a difference there was between the two of them. He wasn’t breathing out alcohol fumes at least. ”Somehow I doubt it’s gonna stop them being assholes.” For some that was a lifelong condition. Maybe if he’d stuck around town living off of the Lockwood name there would’ve been even less difference between them. The heat of shame coloured Mason’s cheeks as Claire pointed out the damage that had been done. He looked sideways at the broken glasses on the bar, biting down on the tip of his tongue for a moment. ”Not all of them,” he admitted. ”He was going to take a bottle to my face if he got the chance.” Instead he’d introduced the guy’s face to the solid surface of the bar. Mason cleared his throat, glancing at the barmaid without it. ”I’ll pay for it. Non-alcholic.” He’d meant the damage too. With a throat still raw he started to take Claire through what had happened. One corner of his mouth rose in a crooked grin for a moment. ”I’m not denying that. They started touching, trying to grab her ass, not taking no for an answer.” Even now the guy he’d gone for was pushing buttons, earning a feral look from him before Claire patted his shoulder. ”Kinda hard to back down when he looks like he thinks he’s gonna stroll out of here without a slap on the wrist. You taking him in if she corroborates my story here?” There was a trace of worry in his eyes as he looked back at Claire. Not so much for him but for the bartender who was going to be leaving here later.

Bar fights weren’t exactly uncommon for Mystic Falls but Claire had to admit that she didn’t necessarily like dealing with them too often if she could help it. Dealing with drunk people wasn’t exactly her idea of fun but since she was out on her own that day considering that Ares had the day off, she had known that it wouldn’t hurt to lend the others who had responded to the call a helping hand. She didn’t mind taking calls while she was on her own and the fact that she was a vampire made it that much easier but there were certain things that she knew she couldn’t really respond to without drawing too much attention to herself so she had been choosing her calls carefully. Certain ones always required the backup of a partner and if she showed that she was able to deal with them on her own then people would start asking questions and that really was the last thing that she wanted. Her partnership with Ares worked because they both knew what the other was and they were able to help hide it from everyone else around them and having someone watching her back like that was something that she knew better than to take for granted. She didn’t doubt that Ares would end up teasing her the following day about how boring her shift had been without him and he would be right but she could handle it even if she had to be careful so she knew that it was just one of those things. It had seemed better going it alone than having a temporary partner for the day anyway as she didn’t doubt that her superiors would have tried to pair her up with a rookie who was just learning the ropes otherwise and she knew what kind of day she would much rather have out of those two options. She hadn’t thought that she would end up running into Mason on a call that day or find out that he was one of the people who was involved in the fight but she knew that he could hold his own and given that he was a werewolf there wouldn’t be any lasting damage either so in a way she knew that it was probably a good thing that he was there. “You’re not going to be spending a night in the cells, don’t worry. I’ll talk to the barmaid in a minute, it sounds like it was self defence,” she assured him. “Probably not, some people are just wired that way,” she shrugged. “We can live in hope though.” It probably wouldn’t do either of them any good to hope that the guys might turn their lives around and stop being jerks but it was still a hope that she had for a lot of people so she knew that she should probably give them the benefit of the doubt. A few of the men in her life were ones that had rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way but she had seen the good guys beneath it all and over time they had proved her right so she knew that she wasn’t ready to give up on anyone just yet. “It’s lucky he didn’t then. If that had healed quickly then you would have been found out.” With other injuries it was easier to make out that they had never happened but with something visible like that it just wasn’t possible. “Water only, it won’t look good in front of the others if I let you drink even a non-alcoholic beer while we’re here,” she said, hoping that he would understand. If the circumstances were different she wouldn’t have a problem with it at all but they had to keep up appearances while the others were around. “The officer over there might be scared of him but I’m not,” she said as she glanced over in their direction. “Stay right here, I’ll be back in a minute,” she said before going to take the statement of the barmaid and only returning to Mason once she had done that and talked to the other officers. “Her story lined up with yours so they’re being arrested and you’re free to go.”MASON LOCKWOOD

This had to stop. Mason hung his head slightly, scrubbing his hand over his hair. When it had just been him and Katherine hadn’t even been a pretty face in the crowd things like this didn’t do more than put a blip in his weekend. These days it was easier than ever to slip and with the strength he had now one wrong move wouldn’t just land him in jail for drunk and disorderly for a night. He could kill someone. He’d already proven he was capable of it under the wrong circumstances and one murder was more than enough on his conscience. Green eyes rose, fixing on the guy he’d tried to get away from the bartender. Some might’ve said that this one might not have been such a great loss but it didn’t matter who it was, it was still blood on his hands and a punishment that would shatter what life he did have here. Anything more than this minor slap on the wrist and social services might end up rethinking his guardianship of Jezebelle. He was the one relative she really had left who could take care of her, cause he was pretty damn sure that Carol wouldn’t if it came down to it. She was relying on him and if he ever managed to straighten things out with Tyler maybe his nephew would end up relying on him too. That much meant he couldn’t keep doing this, even if all he’d been trying to do was the right thing.
It was just sheer luck that it had been Claire who’d turned up and not one of the officers who would’ve just hauled him out of there at the first finger pointing. There were some in town who figured the Founding Families got away with too much as it was. Mason looked at her with both hope and dread in his eyes as she’d said someone might be cooling off in the cells overnight. That would be an instant black mark against him. He swallowed as she spoke, his shoulders slumping as he let out a sighing breath. Bracing his hands on his knees, Mason hung his head for a moment. ”It was,” he said tightly. ”I tried to make sure it didn’t escalate.” But things slipped, they always did when you weren’t careful. Glancing away from the guy who’d started it, Mason straightened up, his hand scrubbing over his hair. ”It’s a shame you can’t rewire them.” People weren’t plugs though, there was no changing them most of the time. A corner of his mouth kicked up as he looked back at Claire. Maybe he was one of those who could, at least enough to make a difference. ”Don’t I know it. As it is he’s gonna wonder if I’m Superman, not even showing any bruises.” The same couldn’t be said for the guy he’d dealt with though, he had marks to show. Mocking sighing, Mason gestured to one of the other bartenders, he shot a glance sideways at Claire as he spoke. ”Hey, can I get a glass of water,” he rasped. The guy trundled off to grab one for him as Claire said she wasn’t scared of the asshole who’d cause this. ”Yes ma’am,” he told her as she headed off to get the statement of the bartender. Mason sipped at the water the other bartender put in front of him, watching Claire the entire time. This was where it could fall apart. ”Really?” Pushing his way to his feet, Mason had to squelch a laugh of relief. ”You really are a life saver. I owe you big time for this.” There was a chance he wouldn’t have been arrested anyway but having Claire here had made this a thousand times easier.

Claire always enjoyed the days when she was able to work with Ares. The two of them were partners and they always had each other’s back no matter what was going on but that day Ares had the day off so Claire was left to patrol on her own. She knew that she could have asked to be paired with someone else just for the day but it wouldn’t have been the same so instead she had settled for working on her own. She was still able to do her job while she was on her own but she was also able to provide back up for others who needed it as well and that was what she had decided to do when she had headed to the Grill. One thing Claire had come to realise that there was always something going on in Mystic Falls. It hadn’t been that way when she had first visited the town back when she was human but things had changed so much since then. Stefan and Damon always seemed to be embroiled in some kind of supernatural drama but if she was honest that was something that Claire was happy to stay out of as much as possible. She had been there for Damon when he was suffering from the hybrid bite and she had helped search for Stefan after that while he was off with Klaus. She also occasionally gave information to some of her friends when they needed it if she knew that it wouldn’t jeopardise a case that was ongoing but Claire was much more at ease dealing with ordinary human drama and there was definitely enough of that around Mystic Falls to keep her busy for a while as well. There were a large number of supernatural residents in town but there were plenty of human ones too and more often than not her shifts were busy ones so there always seemed to be something going on to keep her on her toes and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. One of the things she enjoyed about her job was not knowing what each call she took was going to bring but when she had heard the call for back up come over the radio because there was a disturbance at the Grill she had known that it would be someone getting rowdy again but she hadn’t realised that Mason would be involved. Vampires and werewolves weren’t meant to be friends and the truth was that often they weren’t but she and Mason got along well and he was another person in town that she trusted. She wasn’t surprised to learn that he was only involved because he had stepped in to help the woman but she knew that she needed to be fair and make sure that the story checked out. “It looks like things didn’t quite work out how you planned but at least no one got seriously hurt,” Claire shrugged. She knew that Mason would heal and the guys that he had fought would be just fine once they had cooled off too. Aside from some damage to the Grill there wasn’t any serious harm done so she knew that things would work out in the end. “That would be nice,” she grinned. It would certainly make things a lot easier but unfortunately it wasn’t possible. The best she could do was compel people when she really had to but she tried not to do that unless there was no other choice. Since she fed on animal blood she wasn’t as strong as other vampires were anyway so it really was just a last resort. “With the amount he’s had to drink I’ll be surprised if he remembers much about it so I wouldn’t worry. If he does then I’ll make sure he forgets,” she said gently. She was so careful when it came to making sure that people in town didn’t figure out what she was but Mason had to do the same as well so if it was something that she had to do in order to help him then she knew that she would. Taking the statement of the bartender didn’t take too long and thankfully it matched the story that Mason had given and she didn’t doubt that there would be video footage to back it up so she knew that it was safe to let him go. “How about you buy me a drink after my shift and we’ll call it quits?” she suggested, knowing that it would be good to catch up with him while she wasn’t working as well. He’d been lucky he hadn’t lost control and killed the guy. In those first few awkward weeks after he’d killed Jimmy his control had been slippery and no amount of mental waxing had helped with it. Katherine had still been around then, crooning in his ear, keeping him wrapped around her little finger. Stupidly he’d allowed her too, believing every word out of those painted lips. Looking back Mason knew he’d been an idiot but even without compulsion clouding things anymore he’d been a fool. The vampire’s control over him hadn’t ended with him breaking the curse. It hadn’t ended until he’d wised up and dug his heels in at the thought of being a freaking human sacrifice for the thousand year old vampire who’d once tried to do the same to Katherine. Maybe that refusal had saved his life, it had certainly given him enough time in Florida to try and get his head together before Carol had called him home to stop Tyler making the same mistake. Whether or not she knew he’d triggered his curse still remained to be seen but either way she’d wanted him to try and get Tyler to listen to him. If she’d seen what had happened tonight she might not’ve been so keen. Mason knew that it could’ve been worse but keeping a grip on his temper while that guy’s hands had been on the bartender had required more mental strength than he thought he was capable of. If he’d still been humour and liquor had eroded his good sense further it wouldn’t have ended with a few bruises here tonight. This might have been the straw that broke the curse’s back … if Katherine hadn’t already that was.
Mason kept his gaze down on his hands, twisting them slightly to study knuckles that were still red but were looking a damn site better than the other guy’s. His bruises would heal almost instantly, the other guy was gonna be wearing the marks of this fight for weeks to come. It could’ve been months though, on life support in the hospital, mending broken bones, if he’d been able to stop at all. He swallowed hard at the thought, his lips remaining pinched as he looked up. ”I’m lucky they didn’t work out worse,” he said hoarsely, knowing she was leaving that part out. Green eyes cut aside to the guy who’d started all of this before they settled back on Claire. Her appraisal of the guy had him snorting out a laugh, a little knot of relief slithering loose in his gut. ”I’d appreciate it,” he admitted, nodding to let him know he got what she said. Claire was covering his ass in a way he wasn’t sure he deserved but did appreciate all the same. ”I guess we’ll see after he sleeps it off back at the station.” Hopefully a slap on the wrist from the sheriff’s department would be the first step in teaching this guy to keep his hands to himself. Mason looked back at Claire, as she returned from getting the statement from the bartender. That relief was absolute then, she wasn’t reaching for his arm to take him off to the station too. He was free and clear. Thank God. If they weren’t still standing in front of the guy he’d had a fight with he might’ve hugged her for this. ”A drink, dinner, a kidney, you’ve got whatever you want for this.” Mason lifted both hands, dragging them over his face. ”What time do you finish up?” Dropping his arms, he twisted one to look at his watch. At some point Jeze would be home for dinner, although he doubted she’d argue too hard if he brought her back something from the Grill instead of attempting to cook.

Claire hadn’t known what she would find when she got to Mystic Falls but it had to be said that things had worked out a lot better than she had thought they would. Not only did she have Stefan and Damon back in her life but she had Ares and Mason as well so she knew that things were working out a lot better than she had thought that she would. For the first time in a while she had felt like she could really start building a life for herself and she was enjoying doing just that. Her job was going well since she and Ares had been partnered up once more and even though she was working on her own that day since he had the day off it wasn’t too bad since she knew that things would be back to normal by the time her next shift rolled around. Taking calls on her own wasn’t anywhere near as enjoyable as when she was with Ares but she was doing her best to pass the time and help out as much as she could and it seemed to be working so she knew that it could easily be a lot worse. A call at the Grill asking for backup had seemed like it would be pretty standard but as soon as she had spotted Mason she had known that it was going to be anything but. She knew him well enough to know that he wouldn’t get into a fight unless it couldn’t be avoided so she knew to give him the benefit of the doubt. The other officers might not have been so willing to do so but she believed that Mason would have only been trying to do the right thing so it was easy for her to do so. Stopping would have been the hard part for him since she knew that werewolves often found it difficult to control their tempers but he hadn’t hurt any of the guys too badly and for that she was grateful. Had anyone ended up getting badly hurt then she knew that this would have ended up going in a completely different direction but they hadn’t and for that she was glad. “You are,” she agreed as Mason said that he was lucky it hadn’t worked out worse. It could have done quite easily but thankfully it hadn’t and she knew to take a win when it came along so she hoped that Mason knew how to as well. “You’ve got it,” she nodded. There were only a few people in Mystic Falls who knew the truth about what she was but Mason was one of those people and she knew that she could trust him with it. Considering that she was a vampire and he was a werewolf she knew that they weren’t meant to get along as well as they did but they were friends and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. She knew how important it was to keep what they both were a secret from everyone else around them so if compelling the guy was what it took to keep Mason’s secret then she knew that she would do it without even thinking about it twice. “He won’t like it but it’s the least he deserves after what he’s done,” she shrugged. “This isn’t the first time he’s gotten a little handsy.” It probably wouldn’t be the last either since she got the impression that he was the kind of guy who was unfortunately never going to learn his lesson but she could live in hope. “If I have to compel him to get him to stop I will,” she added with a shrug. She didn’t like to compel people unless she absolutely had to but she knew that she would make an exception for the guy that had attacked Mason. Thankfully the bartender’s account of what happened matched up with what Mason had told her had happened so she was able to let him go free without any problems. As he spoke again she couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ll settle for a drink and perhaps dinner if you don’t have somewhere else that you need to be,” she grinned. She knew that Damon and Ares both had plans that evening and Stefan was spending the night with Elena so she knew that she would be on her own otherwise. “In about ten minutes. I’ll need to help get these guys booked in and get changed so do you want to meet me at the station in twenty?”MASON LOCKWOOD

The tension that had ratcheted his shoulders tight the minute someone had yelled that they’d called the cops had loosened a little more with each reassurance he’d received from Claire. Back in the day the sheriff and all his people had known the Lockwoods, they’d been loyal little toadies of his parents, likely all too pleased to run him in if he started bringing public shame down on the family. Even at 22 Richard would’ve been right there behind them, hands planted on his hips that disappointed look pursing his lips. It was always the same with him, the golden boy versus the screw up, right up until the moment Richard’s disappointment and hatred put him in the ground first. Mason knew he never would’ve been back here if Richard’s mistake hadn’t cost him his life. Jeze would’ve still been in the school Richard had put her in, Tyler would’ve been under his dad’s thumb until he’d been crushed by that pressure and maybe right now he’d have been on a bar down on the beach, tipping back beers that did nothing for him anymore, staring up at the moon, counting off how many days he had before the night where he’d lose all control again. Hunkered down in his apartment, bolting himself to the studs in the walls, hoping to hell that this wasn’t the month he managed to tear free of them. Nothing would’ve proved Richard right more than him managing to do that and kill someone. This would’ve come a close second though, at least until he realized his little brother wasn’t gonna be spending a night in the cells because for once in his life Mason Lockwood had done the right thing.
Green eyes peered through the screen of his dark lashes as he nodded at Claire. She’d done him a huge favour by not being one of the old school of town law enforcement. The guy he’d hit wouldn’t like it but hell, even if he did kick up a stink about it there were people who believed in him enough to quiet him down. People who had his back. Mason’s brows rose as Claire admitted this wasn’t the first time the guy had gotten handsy. ”Seriously?” he asked, his gaze cutting sharply back to the guy. His own temper was back at that buried simmering level he’d managed to work it down to after months of hard work. It could quiet easily rise back up though, a Mount Vesuvius just waiting to take off. ”Nobody’s made a complaint about him before?” He’d have asked if anybody had taken a swing at the guy before but he was willing to bet if they had it hadn’t made it as far as police involvement. If it had there was a good chance the guy wouldn’t have been back to do it again now. ”He deserves it.” Mason’s tone was dry, his breath sucked in and released with a sigh. The sooner he got away from the guy the better. Claire wasn’t done with the ass saving. She was giving him both the chance to make it up to her and continue to cool down before he headed home to Jeze. He looked up at her, shaking his head. ”Nope, nowhere to be. Jeze’s not back yet and I might just be her favourite uncle ever if I decided to bring her something home later rather than trying to cook.” Mason rose slowly, brushing his hands down his thighs. ”Perfect. I can get back to the apartment, clean up. See you there in twenty?” Nodding to the bartender, Mason started towards the door, twisting back halfway. ”Thank you Officer Devereux.” Mason dipped his head in honest gratitude.

Claire hadn’t known how her day without Ares would end up going but if she was honest it had gone better than she had thought that it would. She couldn’t wait to have him back, something that she was never going to tell him of course, but for now she still had a bit more time to kill and she had known that she might as well use it by helping out her colleagues when they had asked for backup on a call at the Grill. She hadn’t known exactly what she would find when she got there but she had suspected what might have happened and she was glad that she was the one that had responded to the call. Any of her colleagues could have helped with a disturbance like this but she knew that they would have started asking questions about how Mason had healed so quickly. She at least knew the truth about what he was and that had helped explain a lot. She also knew him on a personal level and even though Mason had ended up getting himself into trouble in the past she had believed him when he had said that this time it wasn’t his fault. Given his reputation around the town she knew that others might not necessarily have been as happy to give him the benefit of the doubt the way that she had but it would all come down to whether the bartender’s story lined up with his and if it didn’t then Claire knew that it would be much more difficult for her to help him. Thankfully that wasn’t something that she needed to talk about because after speaking to the woman it seemed that what Mason had said really was true. Claire was able to take a preliminary statement from her and even though she knew that the woman would have to go over what had happened in more detail at the station later it was at least enough to make sure that she could let Mason go. The last thing he needed was to end up being hauled off to the station and locked in a cell with the guys that had tried to bash his head in not too long ago and he definitely didn’t deserve it either so she was glad that she had the chance to put things right. “None of them ever wanted to press charges so a night in the cells was the best that we could do. I’m hoping that your friend over there will be brave enough to see it through.” She seemed to want to make sure that no one else went through that again because it could have easily ended up getting a lot worse if Mason hadn’t intervened and Claire knew that she would do what she could in order to make sure that something more was done this time. “I know,” she nodded as he said that the guy deserved it. “In that case you’d better not let her down,” Claire said, a smile working its way across her face as she looked over at Mason. “Sounds good,” she nodded as Mason headed out. It wasn’t much longer before Claire was able to get out of there too, albeit with one of the guys in the back of her car. Heading back to the station she got the guy through booking before getting changed and heading back out to meet Mason once more. MASON LOCKWOOD

Discretion was always the name of the game in Mystic Falls, especially if you had the mantle of a Founding Family weighing heavy on you. God only knew how much had been covered up by the Sheriff and the town council because it would’ve brought scandal to their perfect little corner of Virginia. It was why Richard had practically committed Jezebelle to a boarding school and why he had come down so hard on Tyler every time he’d fallen short of perfect. It was impossible. Things eventually leaked out anyway and when people took note of it you either found yourself splashed across the front page of the local newspapers or someone evil wrapped you around their little finger like Katherine had done him. Mason knew tonight would’ve stung his parents’ pride at the least, had Richard apoplectic, his face turning red up to the eyebrows as he fought to keep his temper under control in public. It wouldn’t have mattered that he was trying to do the right thing here. The public nature of the situation was all that had mattered.
Now it might’ve been the only reason why this guy was going to actually spend time behind the bars. If he hadn’t managed to turn this loud and get the cops called in it might’ve gone under the radar again. Mason’s jaw flexed as he stared at the guy, the heat bubbling away in the pit of his stomach. At least he had enough control to keep his claws hidden away and not buried in the guy’s throat. ”I’ll see if I can help make sure she does,” he said hoarsely. He looked back at Claire, his throat working. ”Would it matter if I chose to make a statement about what I’d seen, how he swung at me?” The answer was probably not. The whole reason for it kicking off in the first place was the bartender. What had happened to her was assault of a sort, everything afterwards could so easily be dismissed as two hot heads going at each other, a matter of he said-he said, even with the witnesses to it. Karma wasn’t going to make an ounce of difference. What he had to take away from this was the fact that he wasn’t the one that was going to be spending the night in the cells. As he brought up Jezebelle, a smile finally quirked his lips. ”I don’t plan to,” he promised. For both Jeze and Tyler he had to do better.
Twenty minutes later he was sitting in the parking lot of the station. A fresh shirt, a splash of cold water that’d helped his reddened knuckles and the bruises on his throat fade away entirely, his feet crossed at the ankles as he propped himself against the side of his truck. He’d seen other officers emerge from the station, including Forbes herself and had at least nodded to each. To Forbes he’d offered a smile, raised a hand in greeting. If she knew anything about what had happened this evening she didn’t bring it up, which was a relief. Seeing the door of the station open up again and Claire emerge, he straightened up, slipping his hands into the pockets of his jeans. ”My truck? Your car? Both?” he asked. ”I figured you’d get the choice of where to go too, considering you saved my bacon and all.” The grim edge that had marked his voice and expression in the Grill had faded, the smile on his face a little easier now. More like the Mason he’d been when he’d rolled out of town the first time, leaving all the stress of being a Lockwood behind.
