Trying to ignore the weight of his phone in his pocket and the anticipated phone call from his dad that Riley was pretty sure was going to come at some point to tell him it’d be another week before he’d be heading home Danny paced back and forth the length of his dad’s truck. Kind as he ever was he’d left it at home for him to be able to drive himself to school and back while his dad had probably gone and hired some flashy rental to go to his mom. There’d never been any talk of him getting a vehicle of his own, despite the fact that probably at least half the kids at the high school had at least a clunker to get around. Like with everything else, it was assumed he’d go with the flow on that, carrying on this strange juggling, walking out of the house some mornings to discover his dad had gotten up early and taken off with the truck for the day, leaving him to get to school on foot. A year ago he might not’ve kicked up a stink over it but a month ago things had been turned on their head. Now every thoughtless thing his parents did grated at nerves that had felt red raw since the morning he’d woken up with the bite in the woods. Two days ago, his first day at Mystic Falls, the phone call from his dad to tell him he hadn’t made it a week in town before high tailing it away for whatever the hell his parents had when they were together, had been enough to almost have him turning into a wolf, a freaking wolf, in the middle of the school.
Riley paced again, eyes raking the street for Scott as he scuffed his boots over the sidewalk. If it hadn’t been for Danny that day who knew what would’ve happened. He could’ve hurt another kid, could maybe have killed someone this time, all because his dad had skipped out again. Raising his hand, Riley scratched his fingers over his scalp, trying to hold on to the words Danny had told him out front of the school. Keep his heartbeat slow, try and concentrate on calming himself. He didn’t have Danny here now, couldn’t feel the beat of his heart against his palm but Riley tried to hold onto the echo of it in his mind, the same way he’d held on to Danny’s scent for weeks after he’d left Hawaii last summer. Half pushing the thought of how different things might’ve been if he’d been able to settle there instead of heading off to Oregon to get himself bitten from his mind, Riley stopped, stared at the street as he heard the sound of a bike approaching. Feeling his anxiety rise again, he edged slowly towards the house’s driveway as the bike swung onto it. Riley held out a hand to the dark haired guy who got off, feeling the tension crawling into his shoulders again. ”Hey. I’m Riley, Danny’s ... friend ...” He hesitated over the word, unsure exactly what he and Danny were right now, how much Danny had told Scott about what had happened to him or over the summer. ”Thanks for agreeing to talk to me. I’m knida ... what did Danny say?” Riley’s tone went from grateful to hesitating to curious in the space of just a dozen words. This still felt weird, like something out of the Twilight Zone or one of his dad’s books rather than reality.

For a long time now Scott had been unable to shake the feeling that he and his friends just couldn’t catch a break. They had buried Allison only to have her come back months later possessed by a demon and after finally freeing her from that demon she had ended up in a coma. Scott knew that she had been through a lot and he knew that she was a fighter but he would be lying if he said that he wasn’t worried about her. The doctors didn’t think that she was going to wake up so he and his friends were trying to see if there was anything that they could do but at the moment they had yet to find anything. Scott knew that they weren’t going to give up on her though, they had fought so hard to get her back in the first place that he knew they weren’t going to give up on her now. Dealing with all of that on top of the fact that Derek seemed to have gone AWOL again after revealing that something had happened to him while he was in Mexico really wasn’t easy, but deep down Scott knew that it was something that he should be used to by now. Danny had said that Derek seemed to have become a Shapeshifter during his time away but the problem was that was supposed to be impossible. Scott had always been told that once a person was a werewolf that couldn’t change but it seemed like Derek was the exception to that rule although if they could find a way to change him back then Scott knew that they would. That day his day had ended up being a pretty quiet one and that was something that Scott knew to make the most of while it lasted. He had managed to spend some time with his friends that day and for once they had been able to act like nothing more than normal teenagers. Danny had asked a favour of him, however and Scott had known that there was no way that he could turn his friend down. He didn’t know Danny as well as the others but he had really come through for them all over the last few months and by helping Riley Scott hoped that he might be able to repay that in a small way. He knew what it was like to be a new werewolf with absolutely no idea what was going on anyway, it wasn’t too long ago that Scott had been in that position himself and he knew that he wouldn’t have been able to get through it without Derek there to help him so he knew that if he could then he wanted to do the same thing for Riley. It was difficult enough learning that there really were things out there that went bump in the night without suddenly becoming one of them yourself so he knew that the last thing he wanted was for the guy to feel like he was on his own with it. As far as Scott was concerned it was a way to help out a friend but he got the feeling that there was more to it than that for Danny so he also wanted to make sure that his friend didn’t get hurt either emotionally or physically if he could help it. Having arranged to meet Riley at home, Scott rode his bike back to the house and pulled his helmet off once he got there. As Riley spoke but hesitated over the word friend, Scott felt a smile form on his face. “Just a friend?” he asked, an eyebrow raised as he looked over at Riley. “Either way it is good to meet you Riley, I’m Scott,” he said, reaching out and shaking the other guy’s hand. “Danny didn’t really tell me much, he just said that you were bitten quite recently and you needed some help learning control. Is that right?” he asked. Danny hadn’t wanted to divulge anything too personal about Riley and Scott respected that so he decided not to press for too much detail either although if Riley did decide to tell him the whole story then he knew it might help. For longer than he could remember the only person Riley had been able to rely on was himself. If he’d waited for his dad to make him his packed lunch as a seven year old he would’ve gone hungry at school. If he’d been pushed for it his dad might’ve distractedly reached into his wallet and waved a couple of bucks in his direction to buy a school lunch but more often than not he couldn’t even get that reaction out of his dad. He’d grown used to walking around whatever town they were staying in, buying groceries, heading to the bank to pay bills, making sure they actually had heat and light. Without all of that his dad would likely have turned into some sort of mummy at his laptop, eventually starving to death or merely falling into a coma. And his kid … Riley knew he would likely have been taken into care. Schools had questioned him about his parents before, about their seeming lack of interest in their son’s education but eventually they’d all been placated by a visit from his dad, or on two rare occasions his mom. The charm they could exude on command had been enough to quell any questions but the moment they were home Riley had been on his own again. His grandparents were too far away to rely on often, friends coming and going so fast that there was no way he could get to know them, let alone let them in on what went on in his family. This summer, it had taken him weeks to get that far with Danny, to open up about it all. Danny had been the only one Riley had ever let in that far, that was why, when Danny had appeared like a saviour at the school that first day, he’d been able to get the words out. Danny had assured him he could trust his friend Scott that way but as Riley watched Scott arrive and climb off of his bike, he found the words almost sticking in his throat again.
Heat rose in Riley’s face as he shook Scott’s hand. Obviously Danny had either told Scott some of what had been between them this summer or his hesitation had given that away. He wasn’t ashamed that he and Danny had grown close or that he’d missed the guy badly in the months since. Squaring the shoulders that had tried to creep up towards his ears, Riley lifted his chin. ”We were more than that once, I’m guessing you figured that out but right now, we’re just friends,” he explained, trusting that Danny wouldn’t object to him revealing too much. Danny trusted his friend and he trusted Danny, that meant he could trust Scott too. Drawing his hand back, Riley shoved it into the pocket of his jeans, not trusting himself to keep the claws at bay as his anxiety was likely to rise. ”Good to meet you too Scott,” he managed. Fisting the hand in his pocket as tension tried to bleed back into him, Riley gave a tight nod. ”Almost a month ago, night of a full moon. Since then …” Riley huffed out a breath, looked away for a moment before he met Scott’s eye again. ”I broke a guy’s arm in Oregon the first time I lost it, the second time was here, Danny had to drag me out of the school. One phone call and I was freaking out, eyes, claws, growling … I could’ve hurt someone again. Danny told me you’d been through this too, the whole changing thing, no control…” Knowing that someone else had bounced back from this enough to just be a normal student, to be able to stick around in a town without worrying whether or not he’d end up turning it into a scene from a horror movie had been reassuring.

Becoming a werewolf wasn’t easy, that was something that Scott had learned firsthand, but it had helped knowing that he’d had Stiles there with him every step of the way. Without his best friend he really wasn’t sure he would have managed to get through his first full moon and finding Allison as his anchor had helped him gain a lot of control over himself. After she died Scott had found himself struggling once more but in the end he had realised with the help of his mother that he needed to be his own anchor and it was that thought that had helped him get through the months that had followed. Now Allison was finally free from the demon albeit in a coma in the local hospital and he could only hope that she would pull through so that he and his friends wouldn’t have to go through the pain of losing her again. Once had been bad enough as far as he was concerned and the truth was that he wasn’t sure what any of them would do if they lost someone else they cared about. He knew that the world they lived in was dangerous and if anything there seemed to be more of a supernatural presence than there had been in Beacon Hills which was something that Scott hadn’t thought possible when he moved but he liked being in a place that held less memories for him than Beacon Hills did. It had given them all the chance to start over and Scott for one wanted to embrace it. That day he had promised Danny that he would do what he could in order to help a friend he had met over the summer and while Scott was intrigued as to whether there was something more going on between them Danny had remained surprisingly tight lipped about the whole thing. “Your hesitation gave it away,” Scott nodded. “Danny only said that the two of you met over the summer and got close but you won’t get any judgment from me. He seems happier now you’re in town,” he admitted. It had been difficult for all of them not knowing what they would find when they got to Mystic Falls but Danny had had that on top of how they would all react to him showing up on top of that. Scott had been a little hesitant at first about dragging him into their mess but now he knew he wouldn’t have it any other way and if Danny trusted Riley then Scott knew that he needed to as well. The way Riley withdrew his hand after they shook hands before slipping both into his pockets didn’t go unnoticed. Scott could remember being that nervous about losing control himself and he knew that he would do whatever he could in order to help the other boy. “I have. I didn’t know what was going on to start with, my best friend Stiles had theories but each one seemed as unbelievable as the next. I knew something had changed because the day after I was bitten my asthma was gone,” he explained. “I won’t lie to you, learning to control yourself isn’t easy especially during the full moon but I’ll help you as much as I can. Before I learned to be my own anchor I always used to focus on my girlfriend’s heartbeat. It probably doesn’t work for everyone but I found it helped me stay grounded, in a way it kept me connected to my humanity. Do you have anyone like that you can focus on?” he asked, not sure whether that was something Danny could help with or whether Riley had someone else in his life like that. RILEY PARKER

A lack of embarrassment over who he was, who he chose to love had probably been what had led to him breaking Greg’s arm. For as long as he could remember Riley had known he was gay, there’d just never been any feelings towards a girl like that for him. He’d heard from the guys he’d grown close to over the years that some had experimented, that they’d tried kissing girls or taking it further with them to see if what they felt for him or others was just a phase. For him it never had been though and he’d been certain of that last summer when he and Danny had started to get closer to one another than he’d ever been with anybody. Riley was certain of that again when Greg had started spouting off about him copping a feel with guys on the football team. He was gay, it was simple. He wasn’t ashamed of it, had never gotten pissed over some meathead guy not understanding it or covering up his own confused feelings by being a jerk. But ... maybe there was some little kernel of doubt in his brain, something that had taken offence over it or that had been bothered by the fact that his parents had never given a damn about who he’d fallen for. Riley doubted his dad had even realised there’d been someone this summer. He sure as hell hadn’t realised that his only child was now a werewolf, one who was struggling so much with the change that he’d hurt a guy, that he’d almost turned at school. The only people who gave a damn were Danny and maybe Scott too.
Riley knew he had a lot to thank Danny for already and this was just another thing on that long list. Soon he was going to have to find some way to pay him back. He’d not been sure if Danny had opened up that far to Scott and so a faint touch of heat rode high on Riley’s cheeks as he managed a rueful smile. ”Hope I didn’t put my foot in it by saying more than he wanted me too.” Not that he’d said much. He nodded as Scott explained what Danny had told him, the smile on his face turning nostalgic and then hopeful. ”He does?” he asked. ”I’m glad to hear it. Being here with him, it’s honestly the best thing that’s happened to me since I left Hawaii.” Since his dad had practically dragged him out of there. That had been before Oregon, before the bite, before he’d stopped being able to control himself. Trying to avoid it now Riley tucked his hands out of sight as he began to explain. Thinking back to the morning after he’d been bitten, he nodded slowly. ”I got hit on the head that night, the end of the next day the wound was gone.” He hadn’t thought too much about it then, too freaked about the bite on his shoulder instead. Riley’s jaw squared faintly at the thought of what was going to happen at his first full moon. ”I’d appreciate it,” he murmured, tugging a hand free to rub it over his chest as he grew breathless. ”Danny. He help me when I started freaking out at school. I didn’t know how to stop it but he made me listen to his heartbeat, got me to slow mine to that. It worked.” But still that flicker of fear had been in the back of his mind. How was he gonna do this when Danny wasn’t there? He couldn’t plaster himself to his side 24 hours a day and if the worst happened and his dad dragged him out of here ... how badly would he lose it?

Scott could remember all too well how disorienting it could be to become a werewolf and have no idea what was going on. He hadn’t even known that they existed until he became one himself, until then they were nothing more than creatures that belonged in scary stories and horror films but now he was living proof that they were real. Had it not been for Stiles, Derek, Allison and Lydia then he knew that he wouldn’t have been able to get through the chances that had overcome him since he was bitten by Peter, he had grown in confidence and he liked to think that he was a much better person than he used to be but it had been touch and go for a while. There were times when he had felt like he wanted nothing more than to give up but the people around him had kept him strong and he knew that he needed to be one of the people to do that for Riley not just because Danny had asked him to but because Riley deserved better than to go through it alone. Scott didn’t doubt that Danny would help the guy as much as he could but having someone around who had gone through the same thing could only help matters and he hoped that he would be able to make it a little easier for Riley. “He’s a good guy, I’m sure he won’t mind,” Scott assured him. He could still remember all that time spent trying to protect Danny from the supernatural world that had been threatening to take hold in Beacon Hills but little did he know that the guy had known more than he was letting on. Scott knew that that summer had been the turning point for him but it seemed he had always known that something was up and as far as Scott was concerned it was good having someone around with a little more knowledge and better resources so that they could figure out what they were up against. “In that case I hope you’ll be able to stick around,” he admitted with a smile. He knew a little about Riley’s history from Danny and Riley himself had confirmed that he moved around a lot but he hoped that for both Riley and Danny’s sakes he would be able to stick around but if not then he knew that he would do all that he could to help in the meantime. As Riley spoke again, Scott nodded. “I bet that must have been a shock for you,” he admitted, knowing that it certainly had been for him. “I found that the same thing happened to me when I focused on my girlfriend’s heartbeat,” he nodded. After Allison died he’d had no choice but to learn to become his own anchor and it had worked but he still hoped that in time she would wake up from the coma. “How have you found it controlling yourself when he isn’t around?” he asked, curious as to whether or not that was something that Riley had been struggling with. There had definitely been times since he’d first spotted Danny on the beach when Riley had thought he wasn’t worthy of spending time with the guy, let alone falling into whatever it was that was between them in Hawaii. He’d watched from the outside at first, seeing how easy Danny was with those around him. It was almost graceful, the friendliness he had with everybody. Changing schools month in month out Riley had liked to think of himself as malleable. He was a friendly guy, usually at ease with himself, trying to make sure that each transition was as easy as possible but no matter how hard he worked at it he knew he’d never be quite like Danny that way. The other boy had drawn him in with it, not leaving him standing on the side lines while everybody else clustered together on the beach day and night, drawn in by the water and just general proximity to one another. Like himself, at least as far as his sexuality went, Danny knew who he was, seemed absolutely at ease with it all. He had people around him who accepted him, people he could lean on. When they’d spoken about them in Hawaii Riley had gotten the impression they were a tight knit group, he just hadn’t realised then that they were more than friends, more than just a sort of family ... they were a pack.
Unselfish to the end Danny was welcoming him in to that. He’d arranged this introduction with Scott, had assured him more than once since their reunion at the High School that it was all. If there was anyone not likely to get pissed about the tiniest bit of indiscretion over what was between them, it was Danny. Riley managed a relieved smile as Scott reassured him. ”He’s a great guy,” Riley admitted. ”And I think we’ve got some talking ahead of us to figure out a lot of things.” That couldn’t happen until he knew for sure what was going on with his parents. It wasn’t fair starting something if he was going to be forced away again. Riley’s brows drew together as he sighed. ”You and me both,” he said sadly. ”My dad promised this was it until college at least but he lasted less than a week before he headed out of town again.” Right now it was probably for the best, at least that was what he’d been trying to tell himself all week. His dad might not be back until after he had a real hold on himself. The day of the fight with Greg had been the first time his dad had really paid attention to him but it hadn’t been the way he’d wanted him to. Riley gave a snort at Scott’s comment, continuing to nod slowly. ”Huge shock. I’ve camped practically every place we’ve ever lived, never gotten anywhere near anything bigger than a raccoon.” Slowly Riley tried to force his heart beat back to its normal rhythm, not wanting it to rise. ”Danny said she was your anchor. Without him there I can’t get a grip on it, I try and it just makes thing worse. I’m worried I’m gonna slip again and hurt someone when he’s not around.” It had happened once, it felt like it could so easily happen again. One momentary loss of control and perhaps he wouldn’t know his own strength, he’d be mad enough to main or kill not to just harm.

Even now Scott could still remember just how scary becoming a werewolf had seemed at first. Back then he had been very much like Riley in that he hadn’t known about the existence of the supernatural world and he had still found himself thrown into it because of one foolish decision to join Stiles on a hunt for a dead body in the woods. For a while Scott had found himself wondering just what his life would have been like if they had both stayed home that night but even though he had seen some awful things since then he had also seen and done a lot of good and he knew that he wouldn’t change the people that he had in his life now for anything. His friends were so much more than that to him now, they were his family, his pack, and he knew that he would do anything for any of them. Danny had joined that group when he moved to Mystic Falls to help them free Allison and it seemed like Riley too might be joining them now if he wanted to. No matter what Scott knew that he wasn’t going to stop trying to help the boy the same way that Derek had helped him, he knew that he would have been lost without Stiles and Derek by his side to help him through everything that life had thrown his way and he knew that if he could give Riley even a fraction of the help that the two of them had given him then he would be happy. “Sounds like you’ve got a wise head on your shoulders,” he admitted with a nod as Riley said that he and Danny had some talking to do. Not everyone would have been willing to admit that to themselves let alone to someone that he had just met but Scott honestly hoped that things would work out between the two of them. He wanted each and every one of his friends to find happiness and even though the road might not always be smooth getting there he was certain that they would all find that someone special sooner or later although for Danny and Riley it seemed that perhaps they already had. “Isn’t there any way you could put your foot down with him? You’ve got an important year right around the corner and you’ve got friends here now, it would be silly to uproot you now,” he suggested. He didn’t know much about Riley’s family but he hoped that if it came down to it then his parents would end up listening to their only son even if what he had to say might not necessarily fit in with what they had planned. He knew he was lucky with his mom, she had packed up her life and moved across the country with him when he and his friends had decided they were going to track the demon down and free Allison but not all parents were as understanding or accommodating although with any luck Riley would find a way to convince them. “You might not want to do that around here, there are a lot more than just werewolves in Mystic Falls,” he admitted. The truth was that he was still learning about all of the different species himself but it was important to stay vigilant and to stay safe. As Riley spoke again, Scott found himself nodding. “She was. When she died I had to become my own anchor which wasn’t easy but you might be able to do that with time. For now you’ve got Danny. You’ve focused on his heartbeat before, can you remember how it sounds?” he asked as he looked over at Riley. It was often easy to recognise a person’s heartbeat when they were nearby but if Riley could recall the sound of Danny’s heartbeat even when they were apart then it could help. RILEY PARKER

Life might not have been close to normal before they’d gone to Oregon, not in most people’s terms but it was a beast Riley knew he knew at least. He could predict when the clock was counting down on a place they were staying, he could take first days in his stride by the time he’d hit his twentieth school. Pretty damn quickly he’d learned that arguing against a move was a waste of time. Even when his dad had slipped his laptop into its case in Oahu, spelling the end of his summer there, he’d bitten his tongue. He’d wanted desperately to stay, at least as long as Danny was still there, but in the end Riley had known it was going to be a losing battle. Times when he’d screamed and cried to stay as a kid, to not leave New York at the end of the school summer vacation, to stay long enough in Baton Rouge to play Joseph in the elementary school Christmas play, to remain in Washington to complete his finals in his freshman year of high school, nothing had changed. Until the wolf’s fangs had sunk into his neck Riley had known there’d be no change until he came of age. Then the world had been tipped on its head, now it looked like he might get to be in one place for a couple of years, he’d have the chance to see if anything was still there between him and Danny in the way it had been that summer and maybe manage to get a grip on this with Scott’s help. Maybe Scott’s advice would help him with both of those things, giving him strategies to stop wolfing out at school and maybe a little insight into his friend too.
Riley had felt out of his depth with Danny that first day in Hawaii, not believing that this incredible guy would give him the time of day. There’d been times later that summer and since he’d arrived in Mystic Falls when he’d held his breath, waiting for the other shoe to drop but it still hadn’t. Riley let out a let out a faint chuckle, shaking his head at Scott’s compliment. ”Not so sure about that most of the time but with Danny … I don’t want to screw that up by doing the wrong thing.” It meant having the painful conversation if there was to be one, dragging the words out of his head if he had to. He had to stand up to his parents if they tried to go back on the promise they’d made. Riley let out a mirthless huff, his frown deepening as he shook his head. ”I’ve tried arguing before, it didn’t work. What I wanted didn’t matter until I lost it in the town where I got bit and broke a kid’s arm. They’ve never cared if it was silly or not, my dad wanted to hit the road and we did it.” A day after arriving in a town, a week, a month, it always happened eventually. All he’d been able to do was live the life he wanted in those brief windows he’d had. Riley’s expression sobered at Scott’s warning, his arms crossing over his chest as his shoulders started to tighten. ”Danny warned me about that,” he admitted. ”I’m being as careful as I can.” That need for caution had his mind scrambling for the sound of Danny’s heart beat every time his own seemed to increase. He was pretty sure from what he’d heard that it had been the same for Scott but somehow he’d managed without his anchor when Allison had been killed. Bile burned at the back of his throat at the thought of Danny being gone. Trying not to think about that, Riley shut his eyes for a moment, mustering up the sound of Danny’s heartbeat in his head. ”I remember,” he confirmed. ”Slower than mine, always steady. He never seems to be freaked out by anything.” Riley’s fingers began to tap out the rhythm of Danny’s heart against his own ribs, willing the heart beating faster beneath to slow to it again.

Going through something like becoming a werewolf was never going to be easy and Scott had learned that the hard way. Had he known about the supernatural world beforehand then there was a chance that he might have been a little more prepared when Peter bit him but he hadn’t had a clue and as such it had been a struggle trying to get through it. The truth was Scott didn’t know what he would have done if he hadn’t had Stiles by his side and he was pretty sure that he wouldn’t have been able to get through all of the changes that had gone on since then. His life had changed completely and now Riley was going through exactly the same thing, he just hoped that the other boy wouldn’t face quite as many of the trials that he had faced over the last few years. Between hunters, the Alpha pack, the Nogitsune and everything else he and his friends had been through he really hoped that the worst was over. Allison was back with them where she belonged and she was no longer possessed by the demon so for now things were getting back to normal. Scott knew that Riley had Danny to help him get through everything that was going on but as good as it had been having Stiles around it had also helped having Derek show him the roles so Scott knew that if he could help Riley in the same way that Derek had helped him then he would do it. There were always going to be certain things that the others would never understand but having other werewolves around really did help and he hoped that it would do the same for Riley. Scott hadn’t known if Riley would take him up on the offer of help or not considering that they didn’t know each other that well but he was glad that he had. It had been clear to Scott right from the start just how much Riley meant to Danny and that was good enough for him. The group had been steadily growing over the last few years and even though Danny and Riley were just friends something told him that it wouldn’t stay that way for long so as far as Scott was concerned it would be good to get to know him better since they were all bound to be seeing a lot more of him. “I don’t think you need to worry about that,” Scott assured him. He knew Danny well enough to know that he could be a pretty forgiving guy so if anyone could figure it out then it was them. “For what it’s worth I hope they’ll listen to you this time. You’re not a kid anymore so what you want should matter.” He knew that it didn’t always work out that way but he honestly hoped that for the sake of both Riley and Danny his parents would listen to reason this time if they decided to try and make him leave again. Mystic Falls was more dangerous than other towns perhaps were given the abundance of hunters that seemed to be in the town but they were all being careful so he knew that had to count for something. As Riley began to tap out the rhythm of Danny’s heartbeat, Scott nodded. “That’s it. Whenever you feel yourself losing control just focus on that. It will give you an anchor to tie you to your humanity.”RILEY PARKER

Riley had always hated the idea of being a burden to anybody in any way, shape or form. His parents were one to him, despite their careers. They could put on a smash hit show or have a third book in a row top the bestseller lists but when it came to the day to day things – paying the rent, making sure that there was food in the cupboards and that they actually ate it, making sure their son was actually attending school – it was all down to him. There’d been times when Riley had considered holding out, waiting to see how long it would take his dad to actually notice that food wasn’t being pushed in front of him or bailiffs were knocking at the door. In the end, though, he hadn’t been able to go through with it. He was their kid, that meant they were his burden to bear. Knowing what it was like though, Riley had never wanted to put that on to anybody else. It had made him reticent to really get involved with anybody, not that he’d ever have much of a chance with the way they’d been moving around. Relationships seemed to come with that as a fundamental part – you had someone there to lean on when it was needed and one day, if it held out, there was a good chance the other person would have to feed you, would need to dress you and take care of you. It wasn’t until he and Danny had started getting closer in Hawaii that Riley had realised that wasn’t a bad thing. Having someone to lean on was a blessing not a curse. Then he hadn’t intended to do it too much but since that last night they’d spent on the beach together, so much had changed.
Maybe things had changed between him and Danny as well as inside of him with the bite. That was something Riley still wasn’t sure about. It was beyond awkward to question Scott about it now, his loyalty was obviously going to be with Danny for now, but a part of him was curious. Danny was his shoulder to lean on now, his anchor to hold on to when the wolf inside of him tried to tear him away from the person he was. Laughing faintly he’d admitted to Scott that he didn’t want to screw things up with Danny. It was honestly the last thing in the world he wanted but the way things had gone since he’d been bitten he didn’t know if all the effort in the world would stop it happening. ”You sure about that?” he asked, hope in his voice. His parents made it happen before, who knew if they would try and do that again. For so long what his parents had wanted was what had happened, no matter how hard he’d fought. Riley bit his lip, shook his head. ”I’m hoping they will too but no matter how old I get they’re still going to think they come first. It’s just the way they’ve always been.” Or always had been until he’d broken Greg’s arm. That screaming argument was the first time his dad had paid any attention to what he’d said and Riley knew it was likely only because his dad didn’t want the trouble another meeting with a principal or guidance counsellor would cause. At least for now he was in town and he was working towards controlling his anger … with Danny’s help. At Scott’s urging he’d closed his eyes, pulling the sound of Danny’s heart from his memory. Riley’s fingers continued to tap out the rhythm of it over his heart even as Scott coached him through how to draw on that. He opened his eyes, focusing them on Scott again. ”It worked the first time. I started to claw my locker up at school when my dad called. I don’t know how to avoid getting angry at them both in the first place. Maybe if they were different this would be easier somehow. Did you struggle the same way afterwards?” He didn’t know about Scott’s family history, wouldn’t presume to. Every teenager had their problems though, no matter how far they tried to shove them into the closet and hide them.

Becoming a werewolf wasn’t easy, nor was being thrown into the supernatural world in such a way. Scott hadn’t known a thing about it when he was bitten so it had been a steep learning curve to say the least. Scott had been fortunate enough to have Stiles there with him every step of the way and even though he had often thought that it would have been safer for Stiles if he had kept his distance his friend had always refused to do so. Scott knew that he wouldn’t have been able to get through the last few years without him and now Riley was going through exactly the same thing. Riley wasn’t alone either, however, as he had Danny that he could count on and he was glad that there was at least one person around that the boy could lean on. He knew that he wanted to be there for Riley as much as he could as well, he didn’t really know the boy but what Riley was going through now reminded Scott so much of his own experience of his early days as a werewolf and he knew that he could at least try and help teach Riley the same way that Derek had tried to teach him. It had been good having a human friend to help keep him grounded but at the end of the day having another werewolf around who had gone through the same thing had proved to be invaluable in Scott’s eyes and he hoped that he could do the same for Riley. Moving around so much couldn’t have helped at all so he just hoped that Riley would be able to stay in Mystic Falls at least until he had learned to control himself. Danny had filled him in a little about what Riley’s life had been like in the past and just how much he had moved around but that kind of thing would no doubt only end up making things worse for Riley so he honestly hoped that Riley’s parents would leave him be for a while. Scott wasn’t sure just how much Riley already knew about what they were but he knew that starting with the basics would probably be a pretty good idea. He had struggled until he had realised that he could use Allison as an anchor and he knew that he wouldn’t be surprised if Riley had been going through exactly the same thing. As Riley asked if he was sure he wouldn’t screw up whatever was going on with Danny, Scott nodded. “I’m sure. Danny is an understanding guy and as long as your parents don’t make you move again, I’m sure you’ll figure it out,” he assured him. One thing Scott had learned was that when something was meant to be it would work out in the end. That was how it had been with Allison and even though he knew that Riley and Danny probably had some stuff to work through but if being together was what they both really wanted he was pretty sure that they would make it happen sooner or later the same way he was sure that Stiles and Lydia would eventually get their acts together. “Eventually you might have to put your foot down and refuse to go along with what they say. You’re not a kid anymore and if they try it and you don’t want to go you have people here who will look out for you,” he shrugged. If it came down to it and Riley decided he didn’t want to leave with his parents if they tried to make him Scott was pretty sure that Danny would offer him a place to stay in a heartbeat so this time he at least had options. “I struggled for a long time but eventually I learned to control it. I won’t lie, there are still things that can make me lose control and things got really tough for a while after Allison died but I had people around who cared and eventually I realised I could be my own anchor. Having Danny as your anchor is a great starting point but in time you will probably find that you can be your own anchor if you need to be too.”RILEY PARKER

Mystic Falls was his fresh start. Even before he’d found out that Danny was here, Riley had been determined to make this move the point at which his whole life would change. If he could’ve made his dad some sign some sort of legally binding contract to make sure he wouldn’t wake up to him packing up the van one morning, Riley would’ve done it. This was the last move, the one to somewhere he could start to set down the roots his parents had always shown an absolute aversion to. One high school to wrap up his junior and senior years, one house where he could actually start to unpack his stuff without worrying that he was cursing himself in some way with it. Hell, maybe he could even start buying some furniture of his own to replace the things that always came with the rental properties and motels they stayed in. His own bed, his own closet, walls that he wouldn’t have to keep absolutely free of posters in case he ended up losing them the security deposit his dad had put down on the place. Of course, that was something Riley was sure his dad wouldn’t have noticed unless it somehow emptied out his wallet. His dad was oblivious to everything unless it shook up the neat little worlds he made for himself in his head. Everything else was on his son’s shoulders and Riley knew he’d have been the one apologising to the landlord for anything he managed to screw up by trying to have the sort of life that most teenagers had by rights. No more apologies though, he’d promised himself that when he’d climbed out of his dad’s truck here. He had nothing to apologise for and still wouldn’t, even if he had to finally refuse point blank to get back into that truck and leave town.
In the past he’d caved to the pressure every single time. Riley hated what his parents could do but he still had enough respect for them to know that what they did was important. His dad had responsibilities to his publishing company, to his fans, to the wife who probably couldn’t have named a single novel her husband had written. He just didn’t have any responsibilities when it came to his son. Riley drew in a deep breath at Scott’s reassurance that he was sure he wouldn’t screw up when it came to the person he wanted to have a responsibility to. ”They can try but it’s not happening this time,” he promised. ”We made a deal before we moved here. No matter what this was the last time for me. They can go wherever they want but I’m staying put.” It was an argument he’d likely have to make again but for Danny Riley would do it until he was blue in the face. Scuffing the toe of his boot over the sidewalk he stood on, Riley drew in a deep breath. ”In a few months I’ll be 18 and they’ll have no power to make me go anywhere. Til then, I appreciate having you all looking out for me.” He had people to lean on now, people to argue his corner if it really came to that again. When it came to controlling the wolf inside of him, Riley knew he would need to lean on them hard for now. He wasn’t in the same place Scott was now, he didn’t have the experience to hold it all together at all times. Breathing slowly, listening for his own heartbeat Riley nodded at the alpha. ”I need to try and get there,” he said honestly. As a worse case scenario, if all of this fell apart and he didn’t have the crutches of Danny or the pack. ”What else can I do to try and hold this together? How do you stop all the normal stuff from getting on top of you?” He didn’t want to ask how Scott dealt with his own family situation, that was none of his business really, although the question was burning in his mind. This would always come back to his parents somehow.

Looking back on the way that his life used to be, it was weird for Scott to think that just a year or so ago he was a regular teenager just doing his best to make it through high school in one piece. So much had happened since then, he had been bitten by Peter and thrown into a world that he hadn’t even imagined had existed and he had seen more than he ever would have thought possible. He didn’t know what the future was going to hold for him or his friends but one thing he had learned was that they could get through just about anything as long as they stuck together, even losing one of their own and finding a way to bring her back to them. Scott knew that he would never forget the pain of losing someone he loved but Allison was back where she belonged now so he knew that he just had to focus on the good rather than the bad. It was always too easy to get caught up in all of the awful things that were going on and forget that there was good in the world too but Scott refused to give up. He knew that his friends were all more than capable of looking after themselves but he also couldn’t help but feel like it was his responsibility as an Alpha to look out for them as much as he could. They weren’t just his friends, they were his family, his pack, and he cared about each and every one of them so he knew that the last thing he wanted was to risk losing anyone else. Now and then their family seemed to grow and now as far as Scott was concerned it included Riley as well. He hadn’t known the boy before Danny had asked him to reach out but he could already see that Riley was a good guy who had been through into this world the same way that Scott had not too long ago. If he hadn’t had Derek around to help him then the truth was he didn’t know what he would have done so he knew that he owed it to Riley to help him out in the same way as much as he could. He had promised Danny that he would help the other guy out and it was a promise that he intended on sticking to. As far as he was concerned no one should have to go through being bitten by any werecreature alone so he knew that he would help out as much as he could. “I’m glad to hear it,” Scott admitted as Riley said that he was staying put. “Learning control takes time but it is easier if you have people around who care about you and can support you. I think you have that here,” he added. He knew that he wouldn’t have been able to get through those first few weeks without Stiles and Derek by his side and he knew that it had been the same for Isaac when he was bitten so he was glad that Riley had people around he could talk to. As Riley spoke again, Scott felt a smile form on his face. “You mean a lot to Danny and you seem like a good guy. No matter what happens we’ll always be there for you,” Scott assured him. As far as he was concerned any friend of Danny’s was a friend of his so he hadn’t even had to think about it twice when the other boy had asked. “I won’t lie, sometimes it does get to me but as long as you can find a way to stay calm and deal with any stress that comes your way you’ll get there. Do your parents know what you are?” he asked even though he was pretty sure he already knew what the answer to that question was going to be. RILEY PARKER

The fear of what he’d become after the night he’d been bitten had been with Riley for so long that it almost felt like a security blanket. It had thickened, become almost choking when Greg had fired that verbal volley about his sexuality and something inside of him had snapped with the same sickening sound as Greg’s arm. He’d tried to find his control within that blanket but until Danny had started to help him peel it away, Riley had found himself suffocating. Fighting against it had only made it worse, that oppressive weight making it harder to ease himself back from the edge instead of easier. He hadn’t been able to breath. Now, hearing from Scott that he wasn’t going to destroy Danny’s life, not unless his dad somehow managed to drag him from this town kicking and screaming, Riley realised he could breath again. If he could hold on here, if he could really start getting his feet under him then that fear would fade and he’d be free in the way he didn’t think he’d ever been able to be before. The move to Mystic Falls had been made out of desperation but from the moment he'd spotted Danny in the hallway at the school things had started to fall into place and he had a real chance at making the sort of life here that he’d wanted more than anything in the last couple of years.
Riley knew that it was still going to take a hell of a lot of hard work, none of this was going to happen for him easily, but hard work was never something that he’d shied away from. He had no idea what Scott was going to ask of him, how much he was going to have to put in to learning to control his werewolf side now but even it was a thousand times the work he needed to put in to what was happening between him and Danny then it would all be worth it. Looking up from the toe of his boot, Riley smiled faintly at his fellow wolf. ”Thanks to Danny I’ve got that here. I don’t know how I’m going to thank you for offering to do this.” None of Danny’s friends knew him, even if Danny had mentioned him before they’d reunited, they’d still never met him and the fact that they were opening the door to their pack for a stranger, it meant a lot. Feeling the pit of his stomach ache faintly with it, Riley extended his hand to Scott again, needing to just do something in gratitude. ”It’s incredible that you’d do that for me. Thank you.” This meant more than ever he couldn’t screw this up, couldn’t let his parents do that either. They’d try, undoubtedly, completely unaware of what this town and the people in it really meant to him. It wouldn’t occur to them that he had ties somewhere, a bond with people that he couldn’t just walk away from whenever someone so much as waved in his direction. Riley couldn’t help but let free a tired laugh as Scott said he had to find a way to stay calm and deal with stress. His parents were his stress, his mom the real trigger for half of his freakouts so far. Slipping his hands into the pockets of his sweatshirt, Riley shook his head. ”They’ve got no idea and believe me, if I tried telling them, they’d never believe me. I broke a kid’s arm at school and they didn’t think it was anything more than me having some drama queen tantrum.” It had proven just how much his parents had actually paid attention to him in the last decade. The first trouble he’d ever been in at school and it was all down to him having a tantrum.
