Scott knew firsthand what it was like to be thrown into the supernatural world without any idea that any of it was actually real before that. Up until the night he was bitten by Peter he was just a regular teenager with regular problems and he had honestly never thought that that was going to change. Other than trying to keep his asthma under control he’d often faced the challenge of figuring out how he and Stiles were going to earn spots on the starting line up of the lacrosse team or how they were going to get the girls they liked to notice them but now Scott’s problems were much more serious. After losing Allison he knew just how dangerous the world he lived in truly was and hers wasn’t the only life that had been lost along the way. Boyd, Erica and Aiden had all lost their lives too so Scott knew that this wasn’t a game, he and his friends had been through so much together and he refused to let any of them go through the pain of losing someone they loved again. He knew that he would do everything in his power to keep his friends safe and he knew that they would do the same for him in return. It had been clear to him from the moment that Danny had asked him to help Riley just how much the guy meant to him although he wasn’t sure whether Danny and Riley had admitted that to themselves just yet. Either way he hadn’t hesitated in offering to help and he could only hope that he would be able to give Riley the same kind of help that Derek had given him. Scott knew that he never would have made it this far without Derek’s help and while he knew that he probably wasn’t going to be half as good a teacher as the older werewolf, he knew that he was certainly going to do his best to help Riley as much as he could.
“You really don’t need to thank me, I had help from a friend when I was starting out and I wouldn’t be here without him so hopefully I can teach you at least a little of what he taught me,” Scott shrugged. He knew that he wouldn’t have made it through his first year as a werewolf without Derek’s help let alone his encounter with the Alpha pack and the Nogitsune so in a way he felt like it was only fair that he tried to pass some of that knowledge on. There really hadn’t been any obligation on Derek to help him, after all the two of them were werewolves but that was where the similarities ended, and yet he had gone out of his way to help Scott out and not a day went by when the teenager wasn’t grateful to him for that. He knew that he never would have learned to control himself without Derek’s help and given that the Argent family had been in Beacon Hills following a different code at the time then he knew that they wouldn’t have hesitated in taking him down if he had lost control but luckily it hadn’t come to that. They had still tried to get rid of him but with the help of his friends he had survived and he hoped that he would be able to help Riley in the same way. “I won’t lie to you, this won’t be easy but Danny and I will both help you and if you want it then I’m sure the rest of our friends will too,” he offered. It wasn’t very often that someone new joined the pack but Riley was a new werewolf and inexperienced so if he needed the support then Scott knew that he and his friends could offer it. “Some parents only see what they want to see. My dad is like that too,” he admitted. “We’ll run through some basics for staying in control today and then we’ll go through more next week. Sound good?” he asked as he looked over at the other boy. Once Riley had agreed, Scott taught him some of the things that he had picked up from Derek about staying in control but he tried to keep it basic to begin with. There was so much more to it but there was plenty of time for that and he knew that the last thing he wanted was to end up overwhelming Riley. It was a while later when Scott caught sight of the time and grimaced. “Sorry, I didn’t realise it was so late and I need to pick my mom up from work. We’ll pick this up again next week, alright?” he asked, waiting to make sure that Riley was happy with that before disappearing to go and meet his mom.
