Moving to Mystic Falls had been a big step especially since Danny had decided against warning Scott and the others that he was on his way before packing up his life and moving across the country with his parents but he had known that it was the right thing to go. Even though it was true that he hadn’t really known Allison too well while she was alive the first time and he didn’t know that much about the rest of the gang either Danny had seen what a strain his parents had put on their family by refusing to acknowledge that the things that their parents had tried telling them about the supernatural were real and he knew that he wasn’t going to make that same mistake. His parents had their reasons, of that he was certain, but they had cut their own parents out of their lives as much as they could and they had even moved from Hawaii to Beacon Hills to get away from them. Danny’s relationship with his grandparents had always been a good one, they had always been there for him and they had been quicker to understand it when he came out than his own parents had been. If he was honest he had thought that his grandparents would have been the harder people to sway but now it all made sense. Knowing about the supernatural had made them pretty understanding and that was something that he knew better than to take for granted. Over the summer they had made it clear to him that all they wanted was for him to be happy and by being himself and carrying on the good work that they had already started in Hawaii he knew that he would be able to do just that. He knew that being around to help Scott and the others might not seem like a big deal to most people but it was to Danny and he was determined to make sure that no one else got hurt the way that Allison was. There was more for him in Mystic Falls than Scott and the others, though, Riley was also there and that meant the world to Danny. He had tried to convince himself that he had been fine when the guy had left Hawaii, he had even gone surfing around the time that Riley’s plane had been due to take off in the hope that being out there would be enough to take his mind off of what was happening elsewhere on the island but that hadn’t happened at all. He had still found himself missing the guy although that was something that Danny wasn’t sure that he would ever admit to. He knew that he had never had the best track record when it came to liking guys, he’d been through more than his fair share of heartbreak and his last relationship with Ethan had fallen apart before it had even really begun. He had been fine with the fact that Ethan was a werewolf but after Aiden died he hadn’t wanted to be the reason why Ethan was unable to leave town and move on and now he finally felt like he was ready to move on. Whether anything would happen with Riley the way it had in Hawaii he didn’t know but he knew that he wanted to find out. As Riley said that he was never a fighter, Danny took Riley’s hand in his and gave it a squeeze. “Maybe you weren’t before but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be now. You managed to control yourself earlier and that wasn’t easy. You’re stronger than you know,” Danny assured him gently. He knew that Riley’s parents had always dictated everything about his life and he hated what they had put him through but Riley was the only one who could stand up to them and Danny honestly hoped that if the time came then Riley would find the strength to do just that. Opening up about his surgery wasn’t something that Danny had planned on doing but it had felt right and as Riley’s fingers shifted to his rib cage Danny took Riley’s hand in his and ran his fingers along the scars that he knew so well. He wasn’t ashamed of them, as far as he was concerned they just proved that even difficult odds could be overcome. “You thought I was a superhero?” he asked, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at Riley. As Riley said that he wouldn’t give up, Danny simply nodded. He knew that was easier said than done but the fact that Riley was willing to try eased his mind. “Thanks,” he said, his smile returning as Riley said that he could turn to him. Ever since Jackson left he had never had someone he could count on like that and the truth was that he had missed it. He had had other friends, of course, but none of them had known him as well as Jackson and now Riley was getting to know more about him than most people did too. “That’s right,” he nodded as Riley said that it would take practice just like surfing. “You were pretty good at that by the end of your trip, you’ll get the hang of this too,” he said as they walked. As Riley gave his hand a tug and asked if vampires were real too Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “You didn’t really think that werewolves are the only creatures that go bump in the night, did you?” he teased. “You’ve got a lot to learn and luckily for you I’m a pretty good teacher,” he chuckled. Having accomplished parents, both with sharp minds and an endless well of creativity, should’ve meant that he was a little more astute than most but everything that had happened in the last couple of weeks had shown Riley that he had been blind. What had happened in the woods and afterwards when he’d begun to … change … was like something out of a horror movie. The impact of that thing against him, the stabbing pain of its teeth working their way into his flesh, the fade to black. If it hadn’t felt so damn real, if it hadn’t hurt, he might have laughed at its ridiculousness. Riley knew it wasn’t a laughing matter though. This wasn’t a Halloween prank, this wasn’t some kid playing around in a rubber mask, it was real and it had turned his life on its head. Up until that point the only thing worse than the moving, than his parents’ absolute obliviousness, had been leaving behind Danny. He’d been on his mind over the months, drawing a smile from him occasionally, leaving him nostalgic for a summer he’d been unlikely to recapture. The last few days though, when realisation had started to dawn and it looked like that horror film was now his life, Danny hadn’t been there in his mind. Riley had been blind, flailing desperately in the dark until that hand had reached out and found him and he’d ended up clinging to it. Thinking how he was literally clinging to that lifeline now almost made Riley laugh. He wasn’t teetering on that edge of hysteria anymore, Danny had dragged him back from it, distracting him until he’d calmed. He was tempted to shake his head as Danny tried to make him see that he could be a fighter now but the squeeze of his hand cut the thought off. Riley let his gaze settle on Danny’s, then found himself giving a tiny huff of laughter. ”That was all you,” he said honestly. ”I might be able to fight all of this but I won’t manage it half as well without your support.” That was the truth, the same way it’d been the truth when he’d doubted he’d be able to learn to surf by himself. He hadn’t in the end, that had been with Danny’s help, like half the stuff he’d tried that summer. He’d gotten caught up in it all like a whirlwind, letting himself get carried away by this guy. Blinded by all that light, Riley had a serious case of hero worship first, then a crush. Riley felt those feelings rushing back now as he let Danny draw their hands over the scars on his chest. ”All you needed was some tights and a cape,” he teased as he nodded. Danny had been everything he’d wanted to be, so at ease with himself, comfortable with his family. He'd still swap what he had for that but Riley knew he couldn’t. He had to deal with what he had, who he was now, lean on the people offering their shoulder. Then, when they needed some strength in return, he would be there to give it, to be a sympathetic ear or shoulder to lean on. Walking with Danny now made it almost feel like they were back there on that beach. Glancing sidelong at the guy beside him, Riley offered a half smile. ”That was all because of you too. I might still have been getting dunked with each wave if you hadn’t taught me.” Danny had been a good teacher, patient, kind, generous, the same way he was being now. There’d been that same trace of humour when they’d been out there on the surf too, Danny’s laugh sounding the same then and now. ”Hey, I wasn’t to know,” Riley managed, laughing as the frown broke. ”I get knocked on my ass by something out in the woods hundreds of miles from here, got bitten and knocked out. I didn’t have a clue really about what I was, let alone knowing enough to wonder whether the kid next to be in Algebra is wearing factor 1-billion sun block and chowing down on the cheerleaders between practices. It’s … still crazy. I don’t even want to ask my own Yoda here what else there is.” Horror films were filled with things – wolves, vampires, witches, zombies, slime monsters from out of space. It couldn’t all be real. Tags: DANNY MAHEALANI

For Danny it had been difficult enough getting his head around the fact that his family were druids that summer so the truth was he couldn’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like for Riley to suddenly go from being nothing more than a normal teenager to being a werewolf and not have anyone around to help him. Scott had at least had Derek and Stiles there to help him through it but Riley hadn’t had that luxury and Danny couldn’t help but feel bad about that. He knew what Riley’s parents were like, they were never around enough to notice what was going on in their son’s life so the two people that Riley should have been able to count on no matter what were probably none the wiser about what had happened to him. Danny didn’t share his parents’ desire to stay as far away from the supernatural world as possible, instead he wanted to embrace his heritage and do some good with his life and while he knew that they might not understand his decision they at least supported him and he knew that was where his parents were different to Riley’s. Still, now that they had found each other again he knew that he wasn’t going to let Riley go through it on his own any longer, Danny knew that it couldn’t just be a coincidence that they had met in Hawaii and then both ended up in Mystic Falls. There had to be something more to it than that and he couldn’t deny that the spark he had felt over the summer was still there so he wanted to see what, if anything, would come of it. “You don’t have to worry about going through this on your own anymore, not while I’m here,” Danny assured him. He had no intention of leaving Riley to deal with this on his own, no matter what it took he knew that he would be there to help him and he knew that Scott and the others would no doubt do the same. As Riley spoke again Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “What can I say, I wanted to impress you,” he chuckled. He and Riley had hit it off right from the start and the more time they had spent together the more he had found himself feeling like he was starting to develop a crush on the guy. He felt completely at ease while he was around Riley and that was something that he hadn’t thought that he would be lucky enough to find. He had hated having to leave that behind when Riley left Hawaii but now those feelings seemed to be resurfacing with a vengeance. “That just goes to show you can trust me, I won’t steer you wrong,” he said, smiling back at Riley in return. The truth was he had enjoyed teaching Riley to surf over the summer and even though this was different he knew that he wanted Riley to be happy. “Don’t worry, I’ll teach you all that I can. I'll make a Jedi Knight out of you yet,” Danny assured him, giving Riley’s hand a gentle squeeze as they walked. “So why don’t you fill me in on what else has been going on with you since I last saw you?” he suggested as they neared the Falls. Asked by his parents at any point Riley wouldn’t have professed to be lonely. He had been, absolutely alone for much of the time they were on the road or even during those brief windows when they got to settle somewhere while his dad did his thing, but he’d never wanted to show that much weakness to his parents. They’d never shown any to him, bearing even their failures with the sort of fierceness that had driven both of them to such heights in their careers. Weakness was failure and from the way his parents had always treated Riley figured he’d been enough of one of those to them already. He didn’t want a chink in his armour, didn’t want to have to crawl to either one of them and beg for the help they wouldn’t offer on their own. And this … becoming what he was now … that was a far bigger weakness than being alone had ever been. Loneliness could drive you to rely on memories to get yourself through – that party you got to attend in the eighth grade, your first kiss with Stephen D’Angelo after track practice somewhere in upstate New York, that first night you’d sat with Danny on the in Hawaii, watching the sun set over the remains of the bonfires the kids were always burning there. This … this could drive you to break someone’s arm, or worse. Riley wasn’t sure just how far he could end up going before he reeled himself back in, he’d always been too afraid to try and let things go that far, too afraid of what he could become. One phone call from his dad today and he’d already come close to things getting out of hand again. Without Danny who knew how far it would’ve gone … with him … it had abated, that thing inside of him crawling back down into its den. Maybe the knowledge that he would have someone there for support, someone to keep him in check, would keep it trapped there. At the very least it loosened that knot in his gut, the one that had pulled painfully tighter and tighter in the last few weeks. Riley didn’t know how he was going to thank Danny for this, only managing to swallow hard and now for now, that relief washing away his words until talk of Hawaii managed to return his voice to him. One corner of Riley’s mouth rose as he looked up from where the scars lay beneath Danny’s chest to his dark eyes. ”You definitely did that and you’re doing it again now.” The words ‘when did I get so lucky’ had echoed in his head a dozen times that summer, rapidly followed by the opposite on the morning his dad had announced they were leaving. Finding Danny and telling him that day had been the lowest point of the trip, his mood sunk like it had been weighed down by rocks. It had felt that way again the moment the voicemail had rung in his ear, only lifting when Danny had calmed him down. Danny was always there to pull him out of the riptide, to drag him from the surf and out into the air where he could breath. Riley’s fingers tightened on Danny’s as he glanced down at the ground. ”I trusted you from the moment I met you and the minute you got me out there on a board, I knew I was safe with you.” It hadn’t only been his life he’d trusted to Danny, at some point along the line his heart had slipped into his hands too. Trust had come easily, the crush too and now Riley felt himself leaning on both of those things. ”You sure you want to hear all this Obi Wan?” he asked. Riley took in a deep breath as he smelled the tang of water on the air, the verdant tang of greenery. He drew the two of them to a stop as they emerged in the clearing around the falls, tugging Danny down to sit on a rock. ”We headed to LA after we left Hawaii. My mom was doing a show, my dad was obviously in the mood for a booty call. At least until she headed back to New York and then we were on the road again … piece of advice, never head to Oregon.” It might’ve been a hiker’s paradise but most minds in Bear Creek had been small and there was of course the danger from werewolves. That hadn’t been on the leaflets in every store in town. Tag: DANNY MAHEALANI

Danny couldn’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like for Riley to go through everything that he had since they parted ways that summer, let alone go through all of it alone. Danny wasn’t sure if he would have been able to do that so the truth was that he really did admire Riley. He had always wondered what had come of the guy after they said their goodbyes in Hawaii and even though Danny had tried to tell himself that what they’d had was just a summer fling and nothing more the truth was that his thoughts had ended up turning to Riley a little too often. Finding him again in Mystic Falls of all places couldn’t be just a coincidence but it was something that he knew better than to take for granted. Whether they would be able to pick up where they left off or not remained to be seen and he wasn’t even sure if it was something that Riley would want but at the end of the day even if they only ended up being friends then Danny knew that was good enough for him. He had already made himself a promise that he was going to do everything he could in order to be there for Riley and he hoped that Scott would do the same when he asked. He had been through exactly what Riley was going through at the moment so he knew that there really couldn’t be a better person for him to talk to. “You’re doing the same. I’m amazed at how well you’re handling this,” Danny admitted. Riley was holding it together surprisingly well and he really hoped that continued. It would have been so easy to become overwhelmed by it all but he seemed to have it pretty together and Danny knew that he would do anything to make sure that it stayed that way. “You always will be. I’m here for you for whatever you need,” Danny said, giving Riley’s hand a gentle squeeze as they walked. As Riley asked if he was sure that he wanted to hear all of it, Danny found himself nodding. “Of course. It might help you to talk about it,” he offered. Bottling everything up was often the worst thing to do so if Riley was comfortable getting it off his chest then Danny knew that he wanted him to do just that. As Riley brought them to a stop Danny sat down on the rock next to him and placed his arm around Riley. When they were in Hawaii it had been so easy to make sure that no harm had come to him but now something neither of them could have seen coming had happened and Danny knew that it really was the least he could do to try and shield him from anything else. “I’ll keep that in mind,” he nodded. “What happened after that?”RILEY PARKER

Riley had always thought that his calm demeanour was some sort of deception, a mirrored surface hiding what really lay beneath. He could’ve flipped out a hundred times as a kid, could’ve thrown fits to try and avoid being ferried from one crappy little town to another, could’ve pulled a diva act and demand his mother’s attention. Even as a kid he’d known it wouldn’t get him anyway. His parents were set in their ways, happy with the way they were living their lives and he was left to handle his own. The only person who’d ever noticed how frantically he was kicking beneath the calm surface had been Danny. In Hawaii, having someone giving a damn about his well-being had felt like a breath of fresh air, one he could suck in deep and feel relief from. The situation that’d trapped him for so long seemed a million miles away until the day his parents had decided to put those walls back up around him. Away from Danny, on his own while his parents had their romantic little union, while he’d been dragged across country again, while his life had been brutally changed, Riley had kept on kicking. It’d been anything to keep his head above the water at the time, to fight the rip tide that was threatening to tear him away from everything he knew. He’d learned about the deadly currents in Hawaii that summer, how to spot them, how to avoid drowning once you were caught in one. This afternoon it had felt like he was being sucked back into it but then the hand had appeared, right in front of him, holding on to him until he was steady enough to stop the frantic kicking for a moment. The thought that he looked calm enough to lead Danny to believe he was coping with what was going on had Riley huffing out an almost breathless laugh. If it hadn’t been for Danny dragging him out of the school he would’ve been a gibbering wreck now and his locker, it would’ve been nothing but a pile of scrap metal. ”Doesn’t seem that way most of the time,” he managed honestly. ”Until you got me out of there…” He’d been a mess. Riley knew he didn’t have to be that way any longer, he had a way to try and cope, someone there to encourage him to breath when he thought what was going on would strangle him. Riley’s expression was serious as it rose from the ground, blue eyes seeking out Danny’s dark ones. ”Thank you,” he told him hoarsely, honestly. Danny had never judged him, never left him to go under, to drown in that endless blue. He was offering him the space to breath now, to gulp in a breath and feel that weight on his chest lift. ”You’re gonna get a real ear bending now.” There was a trace of teasing in Riley’s voice along with that brutal honesty. He knew deep down Danny wouldn’t run from hearing any of it this but it wasn’t going to be easy to talk his way through. Down on the rock, Danny’s arm working its way around him Riley closed his eyes for a moment before leaning into the warmth beside him. ”My dad rented a cabin in Bear Creek, the place was barely a dot on the map but it had some decent places to camp around there, ponds and lakes everywhere, the creek too. I spent a lot of time out there until the night I got bit. I was down at the water late, started making my way back and something hit me. I went down hard, was half out of it when it got its teeth into me.” Riley shifted the shoulder pressed against Danny, the fabric snagging on the spot over the point of it, the spot where the teeth had ripped at his flesh. When Danny first learned about the supernatural it was a lot to take in, he had known for a while that there was something strange going on in Beacon Hills but it was only when he started digging that he eventually learned the truth. Jackson had confirmed what was going on before he left to go to London with his parents but by then Danny had already known that there was more going on than met the eye. It had taken some getting used to, learning that werewolves and other creatures that were supposed to go bump in the night were actually real had taken some getting his head around but if he was honest it had made a lot of sense. No town could go through that many animal attacks without something going on and it was exactly the same in Mystic Falls. He knew that there were forces at work trying to cover up what was going on but he knew he had to be careful when it came to having a look around. He knew that he couldn’t risk drawing too much attention to himself and risk getting caught the way he accidentally had done during his time in Beacon Hills but he had learned his lesson and he knew that he wasn’t going to end up making the same mistake again. He wanted to know what was going on in Mystic Falls so that he could make sure that he and his friends were prepared for whatever came their way but he knew that he would figure it out sooner or later so he just had to be patient. Having something else to focus on helped and while it was true that the fact that Riley was now a werewolf had come as a huge surprise there wasn’t a doubt in Danny’s mind that he would do whatever he could in order to help the guy. Even though they had broken off whatever it was that was going on between them when they parted ways towards the end of the summer that didn’t change the fact that he still cared about Riley and he knew that there was no way that he was going to let him continue going through this alone. “Don’t worry about that now. You controlled it and got out of there, that’s all that matters,” Danny assured him, a gentle smile forming on his face as he looked over at him. As Riley spoke again, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “Go for it,” he chuckled as Riley said that he was going to get a real ear bending. As Riley began to explain what had happened and leaned into him, Danny gave Riley’s shoulder a gentle squeeze. “And you’ve been on your own with this ever since?” he asked. His heart really did go out to Riley, he had been through so much and now he had all of this on top. Danny couldn’t help but admire how well he was dealing with everything and he really hoped that continued. “The Alpha didn’t stick around?”RILEY PARKER

Control had never been this much of a problem for Riley. There might’ve been moments when panic had fluttered beneath his chest but he’d never lost it the way he had today, had never lashed out and physically hurt someone else. He would’ve said he’d been incapable of it but maybe that temper had always been there, lurking beneath the surface, festering like a rotting wound. The first time that poison had escaped it had been lanced by a stupid comment over his sexuality. It had never bothered him before, typically he would’ve laughed, shrugged it off, not embarrassed at all by the fact that, yeah, he liked guys. That had been a surprise, he’d never felt his temper well up inside of him that way, had never felt his heart race that fast. What had triggered him today shouldn’t have been a surprise. Anger towards his dad, about being abandoned by the people who were meant to be around to take care of him, that wasn’t unfamiliar, in fact it was like an old t-shirt, worn thin but still providing a comforting weight. This time, when he’d read the words on his phone screen there’d been no weary resignation, no comfort from the routine. There had just been that anger, bubbling under his skin, driving the wolf inside until he’d almost turned right there in the hallway. Right now Riley couldn’t picture him ever being able to entirely hold that back, not without his parents entirely changing the way they lived their lives. Or without his own changing... When he’d arrived in Hawaii and had wandered straight down from the cottage his dad had rented on to the beach, Riley had marvelled at the people surfing. He’d always been a bit of a jock, had run, hiked, climbed for years, but this was the first time they’d been anywhere with this much surf. A part of him had wanted to wade straight back out into the water but another part had doubted he’d ever manage to stand on the board and race on the crest of a wave. When he’d gotten talking to Danny on that same beach the other boy had assured him he’d get there ... and he’d believed him, believed in that quiet assurance. Now Riley found himself holding on to Danny’s words again. Riley’s eyes grew serious for a moment, rising to meet Danny’s. ”You controlled it and you got me out of there,” he said, correcting him. The important thing wasn’t how it happened though, it was that it had. Danny had gotten him out of the school, had calmed him down and was now giving him an out for the rest of the afternoon, one he needed despite having only been at the High School for a few hours. Maybe what he needed to start feeling like he had a handle on this was to lance the wound again. In a controlled way this time, getting that heat off of his chest before it could explode. Hearing Danny laugh over it eased the worry over putting too much on him. The words weren’t easy to get out at first, his throat feeling a little as though it were closing up but with Danny’s arm around his shoulder the words began to spill out of his mouth. Riley sighed as he let his shoulder settle back against Danny. ”On my own with the truth. My dad knew I got hurt out there. He freaked when I got home the next morning covered in blood. He freaked even more a couple of days later when I flipped out at school and broke a guy’s arm.” His arm slid around Danny’s waist as his frown began to grow. There hadn’t been a thought in his dad’s head about him having gotten hurt a couple of days before then, all he was worried about was the scene that had been caused. At Danny’s question Riley shook his head, genuinely unsure. ”No clue. There was no one there when I woke up and three days later we were heading here.” Did that mean there was an Alpha werewolf out there looking for him? If there was, what the hell did that mean for him? Tags: DANNY MAHEALANI

Getting his parents to go to Hawaii for the summer in the first place had taken some convincing, for years they had done their best to keep him away from their families and away from the family heritage that they deemed to be complete lunacy. Other than the obligatory trip to the island every few years for a week or two Danny really hadn’t seen that much of his grandparents while he was growing up but he had written to them when he could, something that to this day he kept a secret from his parents, and he made sure to call them when he could as well so he never completely lost touch with them. That summer had been the best of his life, before the school year came to an end he had realised that he had needed to learn as much as he could about the supernatural to prevent any more innocent lives being lost and his grandparents had been all too happy to help when he had explained everything that had happened to them. He had known that he could count on them when he needed them and they really had come through for him. Finding out that Riley was a werewolf had come as a shock to the teenager but it was something that he took in his stride and straight away he had promised himself that he was going to be there for the guy as best he could. He knew that the summer romance they’d had was over and they were in the real world now but that didn’t change the fact that he still cared about Riley and he knew that nothing would be able to change that. As Riley corrected him Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “Semantics,” he chuckled. “What matters is that you got it under control and you didn’t hurt anyone,” he added with a shrug. That was a pretty big achievement as far as Danny was concerned and he really hoped that Riley saw it as one too. “People don’t always react well to things they can’t explain,” Danny admitted. That was something that he knew all too well and considering that Riley was one of the least likely people to hurt anyone that he knew he could imagine that it must have come as a shock to his dad when he broke someone’s arm. “You’re not on your own any more though, you have my word on that,” he added as he gave Riley’s shoulder a gentle squeeze. “Whenever you need me I’m only a phone call away.” He couldn’t even begin to imagine what it had to be like for Riley but he knew that he was going to be there for him no matter what. “I wouldn’t worry, the alpha that bit you might have just lost control so you could have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he offered. He knew that it didn’t have to mean that the alpha was intentionally looking for new pack members so he hoped that Riley wouldn’t read too much into it. “It’s getting late, why don’t I walk you home?”RILEY PARKER

Putting the past behind him had never felt like it was going to be easy. Riley had imagined this constant trail of towns, of pit stops in places that were barely a blip on the map and brief interludes in the cities his mom was working in, would continue until he could escape to college. A year and a half more, then freedom but never from the baggage he carried with him. As far as he got from his parents, as settled as he might manage to get Riley had doubted he’d ever outrun it all. Screwed up wasn’t a state of mind you could just throw off. For the summer he’d buried it, the life he’d had down on the beach, with the group of other teenagers they’d managed to pull together, with Danny, seeming a million miles away from the reality of things on the mainland. He’d not imagined at that point that things would change so rapidly or so completely just a few months later. If he had half a clue he would’ve refused to leave. Danny might’ve had to head home from Hawaii eventually but he could’ve stayed on there alone, like he was in Mystic Falls now. There he would’ve been safe from the thing that had bitten him but what excuse would he have had that his dad would’ve actually listened to? None. It had taken the violence that had been ripped out of him in Bear Creek to finally make them see him. No matter what happened though, how many outbursts he had or how many truths he tried throwing in his mom and dad’s direction, they were never going to see him like Danny had seen him, then or now. They wouldn’t look at him and see how he’d changed or be proud of him when he managed to hold it all together against the odds. Humble, caring, smart, funny, everything he’d wanted or needed that summer, everything he wanted or needed now. Riley’s mouth quirked for a moment as Danny chuckled, gratitude in the blue depths of his eyes. ”I should stop splitting hairs,” Riley muttered, more to himself than Danny. It was semantics, the doing was far more important than the how or why. Those things hadn’t mattered to his dad when he’d broken Greg’s arm and the thought of just how his dad had flown off the handle had Riley hanging his head slightly now. ”He’s an author, he prides himself on being able to read between the lines and see things other people don’t,” he said on a sigh. Except when it came to his own son. It was the one time he’d needed someone on his side but he hadn’t had that until today, until Danny had ended up back in his life. Riley squeezed Danny’s waist in response to the squeeze to his shoulder. ”I don’t know how I’m gonna thank you for this. It means more than I can say.” If anyone could understand that it was Danny, the one guy who knew him. Riley went silent at Danny’s assurance that he shouldn’t worry. He stared at the falls for a moment, brow still furrowed, wondering if he could just put it out of mind that way or if he was going to have to spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder. He blinked at Danny’s question, drawing himself together enough to straighten up. ”Walk me back to the school?” he asked. ”The truck’s back there. I took it this morning to get to school and I guess my dad found himself some other way out of town.” By now he was probably caught up in his mom’s orbit, the two of them shut up together in a hotel room with no clue of what had happened to their son. Danny couldn’t even begin to imagine what it had to have been like for Riley going through everything that had happened in the last few weeks on his own but the moment he had learned of it he had made a promise to himself that he was going to make sure that he was there for Riley no matter what. That summer had been the best of his life and he knew that that was all down to Riley, he hadn’t counted on making some good friends while he was in Hawaii but Riley had quickly come to mean so much more to him than that. He knew that he didn’t want anything to happen to him nor did he want him to feel like he didn’t have anyone to turn to. It felt a little like déjà vu learning that the guy he liked was a werewolf but Danny knew so much more about the supernatural world than he had done previously and he knew that Riley wasn’t like Ethan so he hoped that this time even if they remained friends they wouldn’t have a problem. He had already made up his mind that he was going to ask Scott if he could help Riley, Scott had been through it all himself and he had helped Isaac and Liam with it too so he knew that it had to be worth a shot. He could help Riley to an extent but having someone he could turn to who had been through the same thing would no doubt be invaluable. “Sometimes it isn’t so easy to see that there is something wrong when it is right in front of you,” Danny said gently. It had been that way in Beacon Hills, there had been so many signs that there was something more going on there than met the eye but everyone had remained so blind to it. Even the Sheriff’s department hadn’t been able to put the pieces together and it seemed to be exactly the same in Mystic Falls although he got the impression that the small town in Virginia had more people trying to cover up the truth than there ever had been in Beacon Hills. “You don’t need to thank me just make sure you call me if you ever need me,” he assured him. As far as he was concerned he really hadn’t done that much, certainly nothing more than anyone else would have done, so if there was a way he could continue to help Riley he knew he would. As Riley asked if he could walk him back to the school, Danny nodded. “Of course, let’s go,” he said, getting to his feet and holding his hands out to Riley to help him to his feet as well before walking him back to school.
