40.18.27. Riley tugged on the lock securing the locker he’d been given that morning and cursed under his breath when it wouldn’t open. Fumbling in his pocket he dug for the combination that had been written out for him. Any minute now the bell for fifth period would ring and both the math book he needed for it would remain locked inside til class ended. Riley smoothed the piece of paper out – 26.19.51. Not even close. Frustrated by the fact that he’d unnecessarily used the locker when everything, including the phone that had been strictly prohibited in class in Bear Creek, could’ve been left in his pack, he’d used the combination from Oregon. As lockers began to slam shut around him Riley put in the correct sequence of numbers. A quick flick of his wrist and the relatively empty locker was open. He crammed the textbook in his bag and thumbed the phone into life as he closed the locker door again. Four missed calls, all his dad. No text messages, just a voicemail. By now he should have been used to it, the ever changing lockers, the curious looks from passing students, his dad’s flaky behaviour. Overhead the bell rang out, Riley glanced down the hall, gauging the distance to his classroom before he punched the button for his voicemail. Hunching his shoulder, Riley strained to hear over the noise. ”Riley. I won’t be at the house when you get back. Your mom’s in Raleigh for a couple of days and there’s an archive there I want to check out. Two birds, one stone and all that. There’s cash in my desk for groceries. If I won’t be back for the weekend I’ll call. Hoping you’re settling in at the school. Best behaviour remember.” Resisting the urge to throw his phone, Riley leaned his head against the locker, letting out a bitter breath. He hadn’t made it a damn week, running almost as soon as they arrived. Best behaviour should’ve gone both ways but it never did, not when the siren called. Riley thumped the fist holding the phone against his locker, hissing at the squeal of things sharper than his usually blunt nails against the phone screen. ”No, no no, not now, please God not now.” His heart was already beginning to race though, his eyes aching as that feeling began to flood his system. Desperately he fisted his hands, growling in the emptying hall as claws tore at his palms. Keeping his head low, knowing his eyes had likely taken on that eerie yellow glow, he glanced desperately around himself. Had anybody else seen? Could he get out of here before they could? He was brand new, chances were nobody would notice he wasn’t where he was supposed to be. Tags: DANNY MAHEALANI

When Danny first moved to Mystic Falls the truth was that he really hadn’t known what he would think of the town but he really was starting to like it. Beacon Hills held a lot of memories for him, both good and bad, and if he was honest it was good to get away from all of that. Without Jackson around Beacon Hills hadn’t really felt like home any longer so he had welcomed the chance to move on with his life and start over. Being the new kid in town wasn’t easy and it had taken a while for him to start to feel like he was getting somewhere with finding his way around but now he had more of a feel for the place so it was a lot easier than it had been to begin with. Not being the only new kid in town helped, the rest of the gang from Beacon Hills had moved to town as well while they were trying to save Allison and now that she was free from the demon they had all decided to stick around. There was something strange going on in the town and there was quite a big convergence of supernatural creatures in town, even more than there had been in Beacon Hills it seemed, but at the end of the day the town was starting to feel like home and he really was glad that things were going so well. Scott and the others could have easily turned him away but they hadn’t. He hadn’t really known any of them that well while they were in Beacon Hills and he wouldn’t have been surprised if it had taken them a while to accept that he had known about the supernatural for a while and wanted nothing more than to help but Scott at least had welcomed him with open arms so Danny knew that he had made the right decision. It had been strange finding out that Ethan was in Mystic Falls, the two of them had broken up because Danny hadn’t wanted him to feel any guilt about leaving Beacon Hills after Aiden died and Danny had honestly thought that he wouldn’t see the guy again. He had given the excuse that he couldn’t be with a werewolf but after spending the summer with his grandparents in Hawaii he had come to realise that he really had been just making excuses to make things easier for Ethan. It didn’t matter to him what a person was, it was who they were that mattered to him instead. Seeing Ethan again had helped him gain some closure and he knew now that he was ready to move on. A few times he had found his thoughts turning to Riley, the guy he had had a fling with over the summer, but he knew that the chances of them seeing each other again were next to none so he knew better than to hold his breath. Deep down Danny knew that he should be used to impossible things happening by now, though. Dumping the books he no longer needed in his locker he was about to close it when the bell rang and another noise reached his ears, a sound he would know anywhere after being around Scott and the others for a while. The sound of nails scraping across metal was unmistakable and Danny glanced in the direction of the noise only to feel his heartbeat increase as he realised who it was. That sound together with the flash of yellow eyes Danny glimpsed when Riley lifted his head couldn’t be denied, the boy was a werecreature of some kind and Danny knew that it must have happened after they last saw each other. Without even thinking about it he made his way over to Riley and placed a hand gently under the boy’s elbow while the other rested against his back. “Come with me, quick,” he said, leading him in the opposite direction where there were less people around and straight out of the school. Once there he placed a hand on each of Riley’s shoulders and locked eyes with him. “Take deep breaths, you can control this,” he said, his voice firm as he spoke. “You need to calm down.”RILEY PARKER

No matter how many times he’d moved Riley had never a new school as an opportunity to start over. They were never opportunities for him, only his dad. Each stop had been another novel for his dad, the books he wrote slowly creeping higher on the best seller lists. For him they’d just been somewhere new to get used to, another set of teachers to assure that he hadn’t missed out on anything in the move, that he didn’t need remedial classes to catch up. It had been a never ending cycle until what had happened in Bear Creek had shattered the track they’d been stuck on. The train had derailed, the wheels had come off and the engine had finally ground to a stop. He didn’t doubt that they would’ve been somewhere clear across the country, or even in the wilds of Alaska, if he hadn’t finally screamed himself hoarse and had managed to get his dad to just stop. Or at least he’d managed to arrange for his own life to stop just for a while. If this summer had proved anything it was that there was a life out there that he was missing out on by always having to be the one to leave. Flying away from Hawaii, staring out of the window at the beach where Danny had already been out on a board, it had felt like he was leaving a life behind more than ever before. Riley had hoped that what happened in Bear Creek would lead towards a life like that but between his parents and whatever the hell had happened to him by that lake, there was a chance this opportunity would be over before it had even started. Sweat began to bead on Riley’s brow, on the back of his neck as fisted his hands, trying to will back what his body was trying to do. He’d never been sure if it was his temper that pushed what was going on. It’d happened the instant his heart rate had begun to rise this time, the rapid beat that was now kicking hard against his ribs growing in time with his anger. Fear certainly didn’t make it back off, the desperation not to be caught like this not doing a damn thing but make his jaw ache as he gritted his teeth against the pain there. Yellow eyes took in the hallway again, it was emptying slowly, but maybe if enough people disappeared he could get to the bathroom unseen. He could hide the fact that he was a freak. Flinching at the sound of someone approaching Riley dropped his head again, slamming his eyes shut so his eyes couldn’t be seen. He flinched again at the touch of hands on him suddenly, trying to pull away for an instant before the voice registered. ”Danny...” The name slipped out prayer soft, relief filling the single word as he allowed the guy he never thought he’d see again to lead him out of the school. Riley’s hands reached for him the minute they were outside and in the clear, fingers curling desperately into his shirt. ”I can’t, you shouldn’t be near me, I could ... I don’t want to hurt you Danny...” Riley’s chest continued to heave as he tried to get air into his lungs, his heartbeat still a painful tattoo beneath his ribs. ”I can’t breathe...” He was though, with Danny’s words echoing in his ears, his eyes locked onto those he’d last seen filled with laughter, he began to feel like maybe he could get control again. There was a time when Danny had felt sure that he and his family would end up staying in Beacon Hills for good. The plan had always been to graduate and then go off to a good school but no matter how hard he tried to think about leaving the town and starting over somewhere new something had always held him back. That had all started to change after Jackson left, Danny had had other friends but the guy had been like a brother to him so to lose that when he and his family moved to London really had come as a huge blow to Danny. Ethan had come into his life after that and the guy had helped distract him for a while but at the end of the day it just wasn’t the same. It had always felt like something was missing and he had often found himself wishing that his best friend was around for him to lean on when things got difficult but it just never happened. Graduating from Beacon Hills high school had suddenly lost its appeal to Danny and the truth was that he had quickly come to like the idea of leaving the town when he realised that Scott and the others had moved to Mystic Falls. He had never been much for having the travelling bug but there was so much about his life in Beacon Hills that he had wanted to leave behind. Not only was Jackson gone but Danny had also been faced with the failed relationships he’d had along the way. No matter where he looked he was reminded of what happened and he had been more than happy to try and get away from all of that. For once he had the chance to start over and he knew that he wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. No one in Mystic Falls knew who he was and that was a good thing as far as he was concerned. He wasn’t ashamed of the person he had become or the fact that he was gay but it was nice not having people around him who knew pretty much everything about his past. One thing he regretted was the way that things had been left with Riley. He had taken a liking to the guy straight away but he had still been so hung up on Ethan that he hadn’t been able to let him go completely. That had held him back with it came to Riley but he had been sure that it wouldn’t be anything more than a summer romance anyway so deep down he had known that it was for the best that they didn’t get too invested. He knew that Riley’s dad travelled a lot so the odds had been against the ever seeing each other again. Never had he thought that he would end up bumping into Riley at his new school but that was exactly what had happened and he would be lying if he said that he wasn’t glad about that. Riley meant a lot to him and no matter what happened Danny was glad that there was at least a chance that they might be able to be a part of each other’s lives again. “It’s me,” he nodded, a smile forming on his face as Riley recognised his voice. It seemed far too much of a coincidence that they had both ended up in the same place but he knew better than to argue. Leading Riley outside Danny ran his arms down the guy’s shoulders and across his forearms as Riley clutched his shirt desperately. “You won’t hurt me Riley, I trust you,” he assured him gently before taking hold of Riley’s hand and placing it against his heart. “Can you feel my heartbeat? Slow and steady. Keep breathing and you’ll get yours to match that.”RILEY PARKER

‘You have to stand on your own two feet, go after your dreams yourself. Nobody’s going to give them to you Riley. It’s all down to you.’ He’d heard few words out of his mom’s mouth over the years, few that he cared to listen to anyway. Her brief visits tended to be filled with whatever she was working on at the time and his dad, there wasn’t any room to help him with homework, to enquire about how his life was going, to offer the sort of encouragement other parents gave their kids. When advice came it tended to be delivered bluntly, in the sort of manner that would’ve wounded most kids. Riley knew he had a thicker skin than most, had needed to considering how often he found himself starting over. Luckier than some he guessed, he’d never found himself at the mercy of a real bully at any of the schools, he hadn’t been harassed for the fact that he preferred men to women, hadn’t been the victim of any sort of hate crime. He had needed to handle everything else himself though, when it came to parents evenings he was the one explaining why his parents weren’t there, when the boiler quit working in the middle of a Chicago winter, he was the one to call the guy to fix it, he made sure there was food in the kitchen, that his dad ate, that the car had gas. He’d taken all of that on his shoulders without complaint and hadn’t lamented the fact that there’d never been anybody there to lean on. The night he’d really needed his dad though, when he’d come home with a bite mark on his neck and a story of something attacking him in the woods, his dad had glossed over the whole thing ... right up until the moment that he’d been unable to keep his temper at school. Riley could hear the snapping of Greg McNeill’s arm echoing in his ears as he clung onto Danny, as he used him as his strength, his logic, to get him out of the building. Gripping on to Danny’s shirt as he tried to encourage him to calm down, to breathe, he could almost feel the flesh giving beneath his palm, the broken ends of the bone grating beneath the skin. It scared him. He hadn’t meant for it to happen last time, hadn’t known just how much strength would rage through his body as McNeill had questioned the way he’d been making out with a kid from the track team at a party in the woods the weekend before. Kids had asked him before and he’d always just shrugged it off like what he’d been doing wasn’t a big deal but when Greg had done exactly the same thing he’d snapped. The last thing Riley ever wanted to do was snap at Danny. He’d never tried to define what they were during the summer, merely enjoying the time they had together but at the very least he knew Danny had been a friend for those weeks on the island. Only a friend would’ve been trying to help him like this now when there was something so obviously wrong with him. Riley felt his muscles start to relax under the touch of Danny’s hands, could feel his heart trying to slow in his chest. ”Maybe you shouldn’t,” Riley managed hoarsely, his face twisting with fear for a moment. ”Last time like this I hurt someone, I don’t want to do that to you.” Last time there hadn’t been anybody to help him calm down like this though. Riley’s gaze dropped to his hand as Danny peeled it from his shirt and settled it over his heart. He could feel the slow thud against his palm. His claws were still out but as he fought to match that rhythm, to slow his breathing, he saw them begin to change. ”I think it’s working,” he whispered, gratitude in his words. ”How did you know? What...?” What was he? What was happening to him? What was Danny? Confusion flooded Riley’s blue eyes as they met Danny’s again. He hadn’t expected answers in this town really, just a new, settled start, but maybe he was going to get them anyway. Tag: DANNY MAHEALANI

Even before Danny had managed to convince his parents to make the move to Mystic Falls he had heard a little about the town. Both Deaton and his grandparents had heard of it so he had known in advance that the town was almost like a magnet for members of the supernatural world but the truth was that he had never realised just how true that was. Werewolves were something that he was used to being around as were banshees, kitsunes and werecoyotes but since arriving in town vampires had been added to the mix as well and it had to be said that his experience with the latter hadn’t exactly been good so far. On his first day in town he had stumbled across Lydia about to be attacked by a vampire and he hadn’t even had to think twice about stepping in to stop it. Since then he had been keeping an eye out for anything that fell into the category of being out of the ordinary and it seemed like there really was a lot of that going on in Mystic Falls. So much lay hidden beneath the surface and he had a feeling that he was only just starting to get an idea about the secrets that the town held. It was a lot to take in especially considering there was a time when he had thought that the level of supernatural activity in Beacon Hills was as bad as it got but he had known what he was signing up for when he decided that he had to help Scott and the others and he knew that he wasn’t going to turn around and change his mind now. He was in it for the long haul and he hoped that the information he had gleamed over the summer might just spare his friends from suffering more of the heartache that they had endured when Allison lost her life. Even though Danny had known all along what he was letting himself in for it had never occurred to him that he would end up running into Riley or that the guy would turn out to be a werewolf. They had spent so much time together over the summer and he had never once let anything slip so Danny felt certain that it had to have happened after they parted ways but that just made him even more concerned. He had really come to care about Riley and to know that the guy was going through something like that, probably alone if things were still as bad with his family as they had seemed over the summer, pained him. As Riley said that he didn’t want to hurt him, Danny felt a smile touch his lips. “You’re not going to hurt me,” he assured him, unable to shake the feeling that he had never been more sure of anything in his life. It didn’t really matter to Danny anyway, even if there was a chance that he might get hurt it was a chance he knew that he was going to have to take if it meant that he would be able to help Riley. It wasn’t long before Riley’s breathing began to slow and Danny’s smile widened. “See? You’ve got this,” he said gently as he gave Riley’s shoulder a gentle squeeze. As he spoke again, this time asking how he knew, Danny simply shrugged. “I’ve spent enough time around werewolves to have picked up a thing or two,” he admitted. “How are you feeling now?” he asked, knowing he needed to know the answer to that question before he started asking what had happened to Riley. Having seen how things were between his parents Riley had vowed for a time never to fall into that trap. Love had made his dad blind to all of his mom's faults, it had fixed rose coloured glasses in place and had given his mom the opportunity to walk all over his dad. The worst bit was that his dad had never seen how painful it all was. Riley had seen the parents of his classmates, had seen how in love they could be, how strong their relationships were and that was so far from what his parents had. Never falling for anybody meant no opportunity to be hurt, especially when he had to move on to yet another town, another school, yet another set of classmates. It didn't mean he wanted to be that alone forever. As he'd gotten older he'd wanted somebody to lean on, someone to talk to, someone who wouldn't be disappearing in the rear view mirror but all of that had felt a long way off, even when he and Danny'd had their thing this summer. When the claws had first pierced his fingertips, when he'd first caught a glimpse of yellow eyes in the bathroom mirror Riley had resigned himself to figuring this out by himself, to getting through this alone. In the months since he'd taken that flight out of Hawaii he'd thought of Danny often, wondered if he'd gone back to Beacon Hills, to his life. He'd never imagined he would be here, like some gift from the gods when he needed him most. Desperate for the help, desperate for the calm he'd always felt around him Riley clung to Danny, soaking up his quiet, confident words as his body heat warmed the back of his knuckles. Swallowing hard as Danny's assurances, Riley shook his head. "I could, I couldn't control myself before. I broke his arm." But now his hands were tangled in Danny's shirt instead of being wrapped around Greg's arm, throwing him to the ground. Riley drew in a long, slow breath, managing a faint smile as Danny squeezed his shoulder. It froze at Danny's words though, his brow furrowing at the word 'werewolves'. "Better," Riley managed as he felt his heart start to thud in time with Danny's. "That's what I am? I thought I was but I wasn't sure. It's not the first time this has happened, last time was worse. He was pushinng me about the party ... this time, my dad..." The thought had his heart rate kicking up again. Riley squeezed his eyes shut as they began to glow again, biting down hard on his lip as he tried not to think about how his dad had abandoned him again now, just when he needed him. In a way maybe it was better that his dad was gone already. He hadn't ended up losing it in front of him like that and hurting him. They weren't close but he was still his dad and he loved him, he didn't want to hurt him. Tag: DANNY MAHEALANI

Danny hadn’t really been ready for anything to start up over the summer, he had gone to Hawaii with the intention of learning what he could about the supernatural and taking some time out so that he could get over Ethan but he had ended up starting to feel something for Riley and that had scared him a little. Danny would be the first to admit that his track record wasn’t great, none of his previous relationships had ended too well and he had never really seen himself as the summer romance kind of guy but that was exactly what had happened. Even though he and Riley had known that they wouldn’t see each other again once the summer was over they had still grown pretty close and Danny had been surprised by just how much he had come to like the guy. He had stayed in Hawaii for a while longer after Riley left with his dad and it just hadn’t been the same. Getting attached to someone he had known that he would never see again wasn’t really a good idea and they had both known that from the start but that hadn’t stopped it from happening. After running into Ethan following his move to Mystic Falls Danny had tried to convince himself that what he and Riley had had over the summer hadn’t really meant anything because it had seemed easier that way but he knew that he had just been kidding himself and he knew that needed to stop. He wasn’t going to let himself believe that they could pick up where they left off because he knew that chances were that wasn’t going to happen but seeing Riley again had made him realise one thing, he really was over Ethan and ready to move on after all. As Riley protested it was Danny’s turn to shake his head. “Listen to me Riley, you’re not going to hurt me,” Danny said, keeping his voice calm and his gaze steady as he looked him in the eyes. “You can do this, I believe in you,” he added, a smile forming on his face as Riley confirmed that he was starting to feel better. “I know this is scary but you’ll get used to it, I promise,” he added. He knew that it had taken Scott and Isaac some time to get used to it after they were bitten but they had managed to get there eventually and he didn’t doubt that Riley would as well. As he asked if a werewolf was what he had become, Danny found himself nodding. “I think so,” he confirmed. He was still learning to tell the difference between the different werecreatures out there but he was pretty sure that was what Riley had become. As Riley’s voice trailed off Danny took his hand and gave it a squeeze. “You can control this Riley just like you did a minute ago,” he assured him. “Don’t worry about what upset you, just focus on staying in control,” he added. He knew that talking about what had triggered it might help Riley in the long run but for now at least he just needed to get him to calm down. “I have a free period now, what do you say we go somewhere and talk?” he offered. Belief was a funny thing. Riley had always had it in himself, trusting that he would graduate high school with a decent GPA despite all the moves, knowing somewhere deep inside that despite his dad’s slavish attitude to his mom, he loved him all the same, believing that all of those motion would stop one day and he’d get the life he wanted, settled somewhere with friends around him, stable, steady friends who had taken the time to get to know the real him. There was so very little he doubted that way. He hadn’t been one of those kids who’d really struggled with knowing exactly where his attraction to people had lain, he hadn’t found himself embarrassed over his first crush or struggling with his feelings towards anybody. In that regard he was confident about who he was and didn’t want to hide it. What had happened in the woods outside of Bear Creek had shaken other parts of him though. When he’d heard Greg’s arm crack he’d been shocked, staring at hands that had inexplicably gone from just human to something more … fingers shaking until the dark claws that had emerged had disappeared. Everything he’d thought he’d known about himself was gone. For days afterwards, until they’d packed up the car and driven out of the state, Riley had been dreading it happening again. What would happen if that … thing … inside of him reared up while his dad was driving, would he be able to control himself enough to avoid hurting his dad? What about if he let anybody else get close, would lust work the same way as anger, would a single mention of him being gay drive him to lash out again? Riley had hoped that the answer was no but what had almost happened on his first day at his new school had been proof that he couldn’t trust himself. One phone call from his dad was all it had taken to rile him up. What would have happened if Danny hadn’t been there like some guardian angel, dragging him outside and talking him through getting himself back under control? He didn’t want to consider it, not when the thought of maybe hurting someone he’d come to care about was right there in his mind. Sweat beaded on Riley’s brow as he frowned at Danny. ”You trust me?” he asked hoarsely. He was lucky to have someone he did, someone who could talk him down and have his racing heart slowing in his chest. A faint laugh emerged, slightly shaky but definitely a laugh as Danny told him he’d get used to it. ”That sounds crazy, this whole thing is crazy.” A part of him had known this wasn’t the flu, it likely wouldn’t pass as the scars from the bite went from red to white and invisible. Something life changing had happened to him out in the woods … but at least he had someone to tell him what had happened, to squeeze his hand when thoughts of his dad had sent that panic climbing again. Riley winced at the touch, feeling his claws beginning to extend again. ”He…” The word emerged in a whisper before Riley let out a long breath, nodding as he tried to concentrate on the thump of Danny’s heart against his hand. He’d felt it before in Hawaii, slow and steady as they’d sat on the sand at dusk racing excitedly after they’d charged out of the surf. It was slow now, that reassuring regular beat that had his panic sliding back under. ”I should be in math … but I can’t go back in there, not yet. Do you know somewhere we could go?” Riley opened his eyes, trust and hope shining in them as he let his hand drop away from Danny’s chest. Reaching down he took Danny’s free hand lacing their fingers, both hands tangled in his now, to continued feeling that reassuring beat through his palms. Tags: DANNY MAHEALANI

Danny had always known that his parents hadn’t gotten along with their parents, there were times when he was younger when he had managed to sneak downstairs to get something from the kitchen and he had overheard them talking about how crazy their parents were but he had never understood why they had believed that. His contact with his grandparents had been pretty limited but they had always been good to him and he had wanted nothing more than to build a relationship with them. It was only when he finally talked them into letting him go to Hawaii that summer that he was able to start learning the truth about his heritage. For a while he had known that there was so much more out there than met the eye, even with the poor explanations that the police were giving out to try and convince everyone in town that the deaths weren’t suspicious Danny had known that there was something off. He had started looking into it himself and it was then that he had learned the truth about all of it. To begin with he had been happy to stay on the outside and he had even kept the fact that he knew from Jackson when he approached Derek asking to be bitten but after Allison and Aiden died Danny had known that there was no way he could have stayed on the sidelines. He had seen the devastation that the supernatural world could cause and even though it was true that he hadn’t really known Scott and the others that well before he arrived in Mystic Falls he had known that he had wanted to help them. His parents hadn’t wanted to embrace their heritage like their parents had done before them but Danny had known straight away that he hadn’t wanted to make the same mistake they had. Moving to Mystic Falls was a big step especially considering he hadn’t even talked to the others beforehand but it had given him the chance to get away from all of the bad memories that the town held and that was a good thing as far as he was concerned. Moving had also given him a distraction from what had happened over the summer, he had tried to convince himself that what happened with Riley hadn’t meant anything but the truth was that it had and he had hated the thought that he would never get to see the guy again. Now they were in the same town together and Danny honestly hoped that for once Riley’s dad would let him stay in town for a while. As Riley asked if he trusted him Danny felt a smile touch his lips. “Of course I do,” he nodded. He and Riley had grown quite close over the summer and there was no way he could do anything but trust him. “I know it seems crazy right now but you’ll be fine, I promise,” Danny assured him. He had seen others go through it and he knew that with time Riley would learn to adjust. As Riley began to tell him what had happened before coming to a stop Danny placed a hand on his arm gently. “It’s alright, you don’t have to tell me,” he promised. The last thing he wanted was for Riley to go getting himself upset so he knew that if there was a way to avoid that then he would. As Riley took his hand Danny gave Riley’s hand a gentle squeeze. “Come on, I know a way to get off campus without getting caught. We’ll go for a walk unless you want to do something a bit more exciting?” he offered, giving Riley a gentle tug in the direction of the way out he knew. RILEY PARKER

His first words, his first steps, his first day at Kindergarten, his first scraped knee, even his first crush, they’d all happened when he was absolutely on his own. Riley had rapidly gotten used to the fact that his family was so different to others. Most kids at least had one parent present, even if divorce had taken them away from the other. They had people to coo over them saying ‘dad’ or ‘mom’ for the first time, had someone to actually respond to it. They had people who gave a damn about their wellbeing. On the surface most who’d met his dad would’ve described him as charming, but charm really had no place in parenting. Neither did selfishness or egotism, ignorance or a sense of entitlement. His parents had it all though, his mom was worse than his dad. People still fell for what they were doling out though, teachers giggled like school girls when his dad bothered to turn up to parent-teacher meetings, dragging out their books for him to sign, theatre types heard his mom’s name and congratulated him, like coming from that woman’s loins had been some sort of big achievement. Riley knew it was the opposite, being the son of Maggie Rumancek was a curse. The only person he’d ever voiced that to had been Danny, no one else had ever taken the time to listen, or had seemed to care enough to know. Sitting out on the beach with Danny or on their boards out on the water, waiting for the next wave, he’d opened up to him more than ever had to anybody. There’d been fifty times since when Riley had wished Danny was there, but it wasn’t until now that he had appeared. If it had been anybody but Danny in front of him now, telling him he trusted him, assuring him that he would be fine after all that had happened, Riley knew he would have laughed. He’d clung onto Danny the moment they were outside, hands fisted in the other boy’s shirt, silently praying for some sort of answer or help. Trust Danny to give him exactly what he needed, to tell just what he desperately wanted to hear right now. ”I trust you too,” Riley managed hoarsely, letting the smile on Danny’s lips help soothe that frantic spot in his brain and erase the frown on his face. ”Better keep that promise. I can’t keep on like this.” Riley’s voice was almost a whisper but at least there was some belief in him now. Danny would keep his word, he always had. If anybody could get him through this it was Danny, if he could tell anybody what it had been like with Greg, it would be Danny. Riley shook his head as Danny settled a hand on his arm, his brows drawing together again. ”I need to. I need someone to understand what happened.” And his dad hadn’t. All his dad had seen was him acting out, hurting another kid out of frustration, like he would ever have done that. Anger came to him more easily than to some thanks to his mom but never that way. Riley felt his pulse give a slow thud in his throat rather than that pounding rhythm as Danny squeezed his hand. He managed a weak smile back as Danny tugged him into motion. ”Since when did you become such a rule breaker?” he asked, letting Danny lead them away from the school. ”You know any other time exciting would’ve been my first choice, but these days, whenever I start getting worked up about anything … that happens.” Riley gestured back over his shoulder, indicating what had happened at the school. The minute his pulse began to pick up he felt like he was in free fall, completely out of control. Tags: DANNY MAHEALANI

It was easy to take for granted what it was like to have two loving parents around while growing up, Danny’s parents worked hard but they had still made sure that they were there for him as much as they could and they had also made sure that he had never had to go without. From what Riley had told him about his own upbringing the two of them had grown up in completely different worlds. Danny knew that he was lucky that his parents had done so much for him, he wouldn’t be the person that he was without their love and support but there were certain things that he knew he would never be able to agree with. They had all but turned their backs on their own parents because they hadn’t wanted to believe what they were saying about the supernatural world and that was something that Danny was never going to understand. His parents were blinded by their own desires but they had still given in when he had asked to move to Mystic Falls. Had they resisted then he could have gone for emancipation but thankfully it hadn’t come to that. He had explained the real reason why he had wanted to move to the town and even though they hadn’t been particularly happy about the idea of him wanting to get involved in the world that they had done everything in their power to shy away from they had eventually understood that it was something that he felt like he had to do and they had promised that they wouldn’t get in his way. Moving to a new town was a big step especially considering that it was such an important year but he knew that it wouldn’t be too difficult to catch up. Danny had never expected to see Riley while he was in town but he knew better than to look a gift horse in the mouth. The two of them had really hit it off over the summer and he had let himself get more attached than he should have done considering that he had known that it was unlikely they would see each other again once the summer was over and yet here he was. It was a coincidence but it was one that Danny was more than happy to take advantage of that. “You can do this and I’ll help you as much as I can,” Danny assured him. He was still learning about the supernatural himself but he knew that he would do whatever he could in order to help Riley, the last thing he wanted was for someone he cared about to have to go through something like that alone. “I have a friend who might be able to help as well, he has been through the same thing,” he added. Scott had never been able to turn away someone in need so Danny didn’t doubt that he would help if he asked. As Riley said that he needed someone to understand what happened, Danny gave Riley’s arm a gentle squeeze. “It’s ok, take your time,” Danny assured him, knowing that if Riley really was ready to tell him what had happened then he would do so when he was ready. Danny knew that pushing someone into talking about something before they were ready just wasn’t a good idea so he knew that that was the last thing that he wanted to do. As Riley asked when he became such a rule breaker, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ve had this side to me all along, you just haven’t seen it until now,” he chuckled. “You’ll get used to it but for now I think we had better try and keep you calm,” Danny nodded. “How about I show you the falls the town is known for? Nobody will find us out there.”RILEY PARKER

If there was one part of his dad that he would’ve admitted to having inherited it was his taste for the written word. Riley had grown up watching him spend hours hunched over his laptop, had been dragged along on dozens of trips to libraries, to landmarks and out of the way spots in the name of research. The day after he’d returned home from his fateful camping trip the first thing he’d done was drag his laptop to the town’s tiny library. Something out there had bitten him, something he’d been sure was bigger than the cougars that supposedly lived in the woods around the town and smaller than the black bears he’d seen lumbering around out there. Eliminating the possible quickly, the ridiculous had come to Riley’s mind but it hadn’t been until he’d lost it at school and he’d seen his eyes glow and his claws grow for the second time that he’d started to accept the absurd. Whatever had bitten him had started to transform him into something. Riley had never been the praying sort but since he’d hurt the guy at school he’d been praying that he’d just wake up one morning and find out that the whole thing had been nothing but a bad dream. He’d come to in the truck, driving to another sleepy town, having fallen asleep with the ridiculous plots of one of his dad’s books pinballing around in his brain. Only, this was no fiction, his growing claws back in the school, Danny’s presence in a town where he never should’ve been in a million years, were proof of that. His dreams had never come close to this, to him finding Danny again in the one place he’d asked to settle down. That would’ve been too much to ask but now that Riley was standing here, looking at Danny with hope in his eyes, he knew that maybe he should’ve asked for it anyway. It would’ve been the first time he’d gone pleading to some higher power he only asked believed in for anything. ”You always had faith,” Riley managed hoarsely, a touch of admiration in his voice as he let memories of the summer fill his mind just for a moment. Danny had been so certain while they’d been there on the island, never giving up on surfing the highest waves or climbing to the highest peak just because someone said he couldn’t do it. Hearing about Danny’s friend had left him feeling a little saner. Other people had suffered like this and they’d come out the other side, that was enough of a sign of hope to have him nodding. Riley’s arm tensed for a moment before Danny squeezed it gently. ”I’ve never told anybody everything,” he admitted, feeling a little like he could get the words out without choking now. ”If I’d known I’d have let you drag me out overnight a little more,” Riley teased back. His dad had never been one for rules but he’d given himself a few, not wanting to go too far from the cottage for too long, just in case he came back and found his dad had cleared out without him. Maybe that would’ve been best given how things had gone. If his dad had disappeared on him then maybe he still would’ve been on the island while his dad had been in Oregon, clear across the ocean he couldn’t have been bitten. Hearing Danny’s suggestion for a hidey hole for the afternoon, Riley nodded. ”I don’t know how anyone ever gets used to that. The claws, the eyes, hearing everything…” He’d overheard so much more than he’d ever wanted when his parents had been talking on the phone, when his dad had filled his mom in on what had happened. Letting out a long breath, Riley began to move in the direction he thought the falls were in, nodding slowly at Danny’s suggestion. ”I’d not started exploring yet. We only arrived a couple of days ago and after what happened I kinda lost my taste for exploring on my own.” Warnings rang in his head every time he ventured away from civilization now. Who knew what was in the woods, what if that thing came back. How much worse could it possible get? Tags: DANNY MAHEALANI

Danny had never expected to bump into Riley when he decided he wanted to join the others in Mystic Falls, the guy had left Hawaii before Danny’s trip had come to an end and he had honestly thought that he would never see the guy again. Fate, it seemed, had other things in store for them, however, and Danny knew that he certainly wasn’t going to argue. It had pained him to say goodbye to Riley when the time had come, even though he had known that it would never be anything more than a summer romance he had let himself get far too attached for his own good and even though he hated to admit it, even though he had tried to convince himself that he was fine with saying goodbye to Riley the truth was that he had felt the complete opposite when he had actually had to do just that. Now they were living in the same town and even though there was always the danger that Riley’s dad might move them on again at a moment’s notice, Danny couldn’t deny that he hoped that day wouldn’t come. He cared about Riley much more than he should and he would be lying if he said that a part of him didn’t want to see if there was a chance of something more happening between the two of them. For now he knew that there was only one thing he needed to focus on, though, and that was helping Riley. He had already been through so much since they had last seen each other but Danny knew that the guy’s days of facing it all on his own were long gone, at least as long as he was around. “I always had to. My whole life I had to deal with people telling me that I couldn’t do certain things but I never let that stop me,” Danny shrugged as Riley said that he always had faith, knowing that the challenges he had faced really had been just the tip of the iceberg. For a while people had kept him at a distance after he had come out as being gay but they had eventually gotten over it. The truth was that that wasn’t the first time that he had faced difficulties, however, and he had a feeling that telling Riley might help him now. “When I was born I had to have surgery for misshapen cartilage and when I was fourteen I had to have a bar inserted in my chest to support my sternum and make sure that my heart and lungs wouldn’t be crushed. I got told by everyone that there would be certain things that I wouldn’t be able to do, that I wouldn’t be able to play lacrosse or do anything that would result in overexerting myself too much but I never let that stop me from doing all of the things that I wanted to do with my life and I know that you won’t let becoming a werewolf stop you either. It’s the things that test us that make us stronger and learn to believe in ourselves even when no one else does. I know you will learn to live with this,” he said, his gaze locked on Riley’s and not a trace of doubt in his voice as he spoke. “I don’t just have faith in myself, I have faith in you so don’t give up,” he added, a genuine smile touching his lips as he ran his hand gently down Riley’s arm. Danny already knew that he wanted to help Riley as much as he could but he also knew that there were some things that Scott would be better placed to help him with. He knew that Scott already had a lot on his mind but Danny didn’t doubt that he would help Riley if he asked. “You don’t have to hide anything from me, I promise,” he assured him. “You can tell my friend anything as well, Scott will understand,” he added although considering that the two had never met he wouldn’t be surprised if that took a little more time. As Riley said he would have let him drag him out more if he had known, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, perhaps we’ll have the chance to make that right now,” he chuckled, knowing that he definitely wouldn’t turn down the chance to spend more time with Riley. He knew it couldn’t be just a coincidence that of all of the towns in the country they had found themselves in the same one but he also knew that Riley could have to move again at any time so Danny knew that he wanted to make the most of whatever time they might have. “The claws and the eyes you’ll learn to control and as for the hearing, you’ll learn to block other people out,” Danny promised. He knew that it wasn’t going to be easy but he also knew that Riley would get there with time. As Riley spoke again, Danny found himself nodding. “That’s understandable. This town is dangerous, on my first day here I came across a vampire about to feed on one of my friends so you need to be careful, we all do,” he explained as he began to lead the way towards the falls. So close and yet so far. Riley had always tried to be a realist, to not waste his life complaining about things he’d lost through no fault of his own. There’d never seemed any point in dwelling on any of it. His dad wouldn’t have cared if he shed a few tears about leaving behind the friends he’d managed to make, he wouldn’t have caved on staying in Hawaii another month or maybe taking a trip through California, stopping for a few weeks in a town like Beacon Hills. Neither was on his agenda and that meant it wasn’t on his son’s either. It was taken for granted that they would do what they had always done, a month here, three months there. If it hadn’t been for the attack, for his utter inability to control his temper, Riley knew they wouldn’t have even discussed his staying put somewhere until he got into college. Then, no doubt, his parents would’ve called him an adult and sent him out into the world on his own. They’d likely then see themselves as free of responsibility, the kid neither one of them even should’ve had standing on his own two feet. Things hadn’t worked out that way though and in freaking out again Riley could hear his dad’s voice in his ears, telling him he’d lost his chance. The thought of watching Danny shrink in the rear view mirror again had his throat feeling as though it was closing up. If it hadn’t been for Danny’s miraculous presence in town Riley knew things would’ve gone rapidly downhill. As it was he’d been saved, Danny’s heartbeat calming him, his steady presence offering hope. Riley’s brows drew together faintly as Danny opened up a little, a trace of concern flitting over his features at him saying people had told him there were things he couldn’t do. ”You’re a fighter,” he murmured. ”I never was, I let them dictate everything.” Right up until that moment in the cabin when he’d finally dug his heels in and let some of that frustration out. At that point it had felt like his world had hit the lowest possible point. Now it seemed relative. There were others who’d suffered through far worse, who’d come out the other side as amazing people. People like Danny. Riley’s hand stilled, then shifted, fingers seeking out the scar he knew lay on Danny’s ribcage. His gaze dropped, then rose again. ”I saw the scars,” he managed hoarsely. ”I didn’t want to push and ask, if I’d known I’d have thought you were more of a superhero than I already did.” Riley’s gaze was steady as he looked up, his throat still aching but not in the same way. Slowly, he shook his head, letting the pleasure of the touch of Danny’s hand on his arm draw a smile from him. ”I’ve got you here, I won’t.” Giving up would never have been an option but now, he had something to fight for, someone to remind himself of when that overwhelming feeling hit. There was someone there who would stand by him no matter what happened, warts and all. Riley felt more grateful than he ever had done in his life. A faint smile tugged at his mouth. ”That means a lot and it’s reciprocal, anything Danny, anything you ever need or want to say…” He knew what it was like to have words choking up inside of you, knew he’d do anything to help Danny the way he’d helped him. Riley’s smile grew at Danny’s laugh, blue eyes narrowing for a moment. ”If there was ever a way to take a guy’s mind off of things, it’s that.” The thought of things being normal enough to just be around Danny, to see him with his friends, it was enough to finish turning the tide on his mood. There was a light at the end of the tunnel, everything Danny was saying was showing him that. Riley nodded slowly, draw in those deep slow breaths. ”It’ll take practice, just like surfing.” It seemed easier to think of things in human terms, even though he was now pretty far from just plain human. That change didn’t mean he couldn’t still appreciate the human things, walking with a friend, someone who’d been more than a friend that summer, to keep his mind off of what was happening inside of him. The conversation was still anything but though. ”Wait … vampires are real too?” Riley gave Danny’s hand a tug, frowning at him for a moment before he started laughing. It was insane, really insane.
