━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ A MONTH AND A HALF. IT WAS MIDWAY THROUGH DECEMBER now, and the Halloween decorations from last time were replaced by Christmas ones. She waited where she always did, in the small space next to the door, populated by whatever seasonal thing they had up. In the weeks after Halloween and when it was too early for Christmas stuff, it was just school supplies and candy, but now Destiny was standing between a giant inflatable reindeer and boxes of glittery ornaments.
Maybe she’d be able to get a semi-decent tree this Christmas. Maybe Tanner would say it was okay for her to have a tree bigger than one of those elf ones, so she could actually decorate it, but she doubted it. And maybe they’d go to his mom’s house for Christmas, which would be really nice. Destiny like seeing her, even if her house smelled like cigarette smoke. It made this feel like a real relationship, like it was going somewhere.
Most of the time, she couldn’t spare more than twenty minutes waiting in Walmart after school before it got suspicious, but Tanner was gone again. For all of last week and this week, she’d been able to make up some excuse about studying after school, a club she was part of, or needing supplies in order to buy herself more time in there. Deren and the other guys didn’t really care so long as she had an excuse.
All she knew about this guy was that his name was Grey and he was a darach like her. Oh, and that he was British. It wasn’t much to look up online, but she tried anyway. He wasn’t on Facebook or Instagram, and she didn’t know how to find him other than just… waiting here.
Destiny weaved in and out of the short aisles, stopping in front of a shelf of stuffed animals. She plucked a reindeer from the lineup and squished it to her chest, then checked the price tag. Maybe she could get it. It was probably the only thing she was gonna get out of today.
A moment or two later, she felt that familiar shadow at the edges of her senses again, and Destiny looked up, then poked her head out from behind the aisle. Yes. It was Grey, and he was walking in, and Destiny was buzzing with excitement from head to toe. As she walked over, she had the sudden realization that she was really just waiting around for a stranger, which felt a little like stalking, but she was out of options. And this wasn’t for anything other than help with learning how to control her powers.
At least she didn’t have any bruises to cover up this time, which hopefully meant no more little comments from Grey about Tanner. Maybe.
“Hey,” She said as she finally approached him, beaming happily up at Grey and standing directly in his way. “Sorry. I… I don’t wanna bug you. He’s not here this time, so I thought maybe… if that’s okay…” Destiny said nervously, then smiled sheepishly. “I’m Destiny, by the way. I realized I never got to tell you last time. Is your name actually Grey?”

”Make sure she doesn’t stick us with a Charlie Brown tree.”
”A what?” He’d squinted at Pete like he’d already developed the ability to read minds (maybe with a few more sacrifices under his belt).
”You know, Charlie Brown ... the cartoon?” Still blank he’d shook his head, and so had Pete. ”Just make sure it’s not too ugly.”
Tightening the strap that held the tree on top of the car, Grey eyed the net wrapped bundle. The branches were a little straggly and there had definitely been a bald patch about half way up, but compared to the other trees that had littered the half empty lot, it had been the best by far. Joy – a touch of bullshit he imagined, given the only joy he’d seen from her had been a cackle that broke off into a smoker’s cough – had called Pete a cheap bastard for waiting til the trees were discounted before he’d bought one. She wasn’t wrong, but with enough decorations, it might not look too bad in the corner of the lobby.
Grey gave the strap one last tug and got into the car. By now the decorations were probably discounted too. Unlike back home where there seemed to be a strict schedule for putting up your Christmas tree, folks here started decorating the minute Thanksgiving was over. Lights had glittered in windows every time he’d driven through the neighbourhood, catching his eye in a way they hadn’t last year, because this time he was looking.
Pale eyes swept the sidewalks as he drove, swivelling towards the cars next to him as he pulled up at lights. He told himself that he was looking for that arrogant prick who’d been with her, but it was always a tumble of dark hair that had his gaze darting back for a second look. Six weeks had slid past and there’d been no sign of her, no snagging pull of power against his own. Maybe she’d just been one more carrot shaken in front of his nose that the universe dragged away from him again, proof that he was getting too comfortable here.
He slowed the car as he pulled into the store parking lot. If he made it to next Christmas, he’d have been here longer than he’d lived anywhere else – except for home. It was a risk, his past probably trudging after him one dogged step at a time. At some point soon they’d probably catch up. The lot was jammed as Grey parked. People were probably stocking up on last minute gifts, buying up rolls of paper to try and disguise what they’d bought. On those rare occasions Malcolm had been lucid enough to make an attempt at a family Christmas he hadn’t bothered, not that the gifts had been anything he’d wanted. At seven he hadn’t been hoping for a grubby old grimoire, but it had been thrust into his hands on Christmas morning anyway.
Snagging a cart, Grey pushed through the front door of the store. Maybe he should’ve been thinking about getting Pete something, but he was already looking deeper into the store, towards the racks of clothing. What would the asshole be giving her this year? Some reindeer PJs, or another black eye? His mouth pressed into a thin line, disgust drawing his power to the surface. If the universe gave the girl a gift this year, it should’ve been the prick’s heart mysteriously exploding in his chest.
Where Halloween decorations had stood the last time, there were Christmas ornaments and some of those inflatable decorations people filled their yards with. One of those would definitely distract from the bald patch on the tree. If there was one place he should’ve been looking for her, it was here, amongst all the cute Christmas shit, but she was within six feet of him by the time he felt that light her boyfriend hadn’t killed yet warm the edges of his senses.
The darach.
”Hi.” A ghost of a smile touched the corners of his lips, but his gaze slid past her, looking for some sign of the dickhead before it returned to her. As if she’d seen him check, she assured him she was on her own. ”It’s ... okay,” he murmured. ”You’re not bugging me.” Last time he might have thought she was to start with, but then he’d seen that need in her that had echoed his own. Destiny. He almost laughed – a not so subtle nudge from the universe. ”You think I’d lie about being named after a colour?” he chuckled. Grey paused, running his tongue over his lower lip before he answered. ”Yeah, it’s short for Greyson. Were you waiting for me, Destiny?” He’d have asked if that was really her name, but she didn’t seem capable of lying.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ WELL, SHE WAS GLAD THEY GOT THAT OUT OF THE way, so maybe her anxiety could take a day off for once. Or, y’know, at least a few minutes.
But it managed to melt as he continued, joking about his name, and Destiny grinned happily up at him. “At least your name isn’t literally fate.” And present in every cheesy song lyric or metaphor, like, ever. Or a stripper name. She’d gotten that once.
“I figured,” She laughed again, then her face began to rapidly heat. She didn’t even catch the alternate meaning━if he’d even intended it or not━but, if she had, she would’ve blushed even harder. Destiny felt stupid for waiting around for him, especially because it wasn’t the first time. How many hours had she sat in this particular section, wandering around and trying to keep herself entertained while she watched the door? It was weird. She didn’t wanna tell him any of that.
“Yeah,” Destiny said softly, looking away from him. She felt the inky tendrils floating around them react in the same way, sparking and snapping suddenly, like they were nervous and couldn’t keep still. “I just━I feel like we didn’t get to talk before, and I really wanna learn more about who I am and what I can do, ‘cause my dad didn’t really get to teach me━he died when I was a kid━and you seem cool, and I know you probably don’t want a young grasshopper, but you kinda offered last time, so…” It all came out at once, one rapid-fire sentence that showed just how nervous she was about all of this. She didn’t wanna bug him, but he did say he’d teach her stuff. “But it’s totally cool if you wanna say no. I mean, I won’t be upset.” Destiny added before he had a chance to respond, and offered him her best I’ll-Actually-Be-Fine smile, even if it wasn’t true. If this opportunity slipped away from her, she’d be crushed.

She got it. He couldn’t have even half said that about his bitch of a half-sister. Growing up alongside Leah should’ve meant that she’d understood what he’d gone through – he’d maybe expected a little empathy from her, but now he knew she didn’t have a scrap of it. The pack had seen the worst of what Malcolm had done to him, seeming as though they were patching up that fragile little kid the best they could. Other kids weren’t gonna start too much shit about his name with members of the pack lurking at the school gates to pick him up. Now, though, it just felt as though they’d been waiting for him to get old enough to start the cycle over with him instead.
In that happy little grin, he knew that she understood what it was like to be singled out. His smile grew, an echo of hers that felt strange, unfamiliar to him at first. ”You’re lucky, it’s prettier than mine.” If her parents had really understood what their daughter was then they’d had a shitty sense of humour. Malcolm would’ve assigned all sorts of meaning to it, ranting on about the curse on their family and how it had be tied to it somehow. For all the old fool knew, her parents might just’ve been hippies.
She’d figured he might be back eventually. Since Destiny wasn’t likely as psychic as her name suggested, this wasn’t likely the first time she’d done it. It had been weeks, but their paths had crossed eventually. Grey dropped his face, watching the heat bloom in her face. He hadn’t been that different though, had he? Looking for her in every crowd as he’d driven around the neighbourhood. Thinking all too much about tracking down that son of a bitch who’d been with her to slip the garrotte around his neck and let him feel the echoes of her pain. Her soft confirmation and the slide of her eyes away from him were proof that he would’ve been right to do it – she deserved better than him.
”I had to come back here eventually, right?” Maybe he’d have done it just to feel that again. Grey let out a ragged breath as he felt her energy come to life, the sparks from it feeding into his in a way that left him drifting a few inches closer. Bringing up the scumbag would only have it dying away. He’d been the reason this had broken off the first time. ”I wouldn’t have offered if I didn’t plan on following through,” Grey murmured as she tried to give him an out. She’d come here for him, but she’d back away if he told her no now. The word liar burned in his throat. She would be upset, he could already the way it would drain that light out of her, killing even the fake smile was pasting on now.
Dark brows drew together faintly, his gaze dropping to his trolley. ”My dad was around to teach me ‘til I was a teenager, but after that I was self-taught. Sometimes it feels like it’s not enough, but I know without it I wouldn’t be standing here.” He’d have been buried in a shallow grave in the woods back home, with Leah probably dancing on it every time she passed. The Maddox family curse would’ve maybe died out right there – unless Leah ended up giving birth to little darachs one day instead of a litter of feral puppies that took right after her.
”You gonna be able to meet up to start learning more?” An ache crept into his throat. What would he do if she said she couldn’t? Go and get rid of her impediment? That wouldn’t go down any better than him pushing about the guy getting handsy the last time. His eyes narrowed faintly as he looked up, studying her face. They weren’t gonna be able to lurk here every time, hiding among the racks of underwear to practice animal control or study the uses of mountain ash. She was gonna have to get brave if she wanted to learn how to protect herself against that son of a bitch.
