They’d taken it too far. The night started out nice and civilised at one of the restaurants on the beachfront. They were all watching the sunset while enjoying a cocktail then suddenly Magnus and Hector were lying on the beach, unable to stand upright. It seemed to become a common occurrence for them, although it wasn’t clear who was the bad influence. If Hector had to put money on it though he’d bet on himself. But it wasn’t his fault Magnus was so easily persuaded. Plus they were on holiday. It was the perfect place to let loose a little, like they did in London and that wild night in Mystic Falls, which ended up costing Hector a small fortune as he had to get his car repaired. When he clocked the state of it the following day all he could do was sigh heavily. Hector opened his eyes, glancing up at the starry sky trying to remember how they got that. Oh yes. The casino. That started off all civilised too. Few healthy bets here and there, that’s all it was supposed to be. They couldn’t resist card counting though and in their drunken state they weren’t exactly coy about it. Their quiet whispers were actually loud conversation. Suddenly four large men grab them by the arm and drag them outside. In the melee Hector had managed to tear his white shirt open. It wasn’t worth fighting back though. Not when there was already a large audience gathering to watch the two men be thrown to the sidewalk. The next hour or so was a complete blur. One of them suggested they should start smoking (possibly Hector). There was plenty of it around the island because they’d seen Tobi smoking almost everyday. His next memory was sitting on the beach, passing the toke back and forth while they talked nonsense, watching the waves crash into the shore. It wasn’t the right time to start getting emotional, but Hector felt a surge of happiness as he looked out into the ocean with his best friend by his side. The past few months had been rough for him— though he would never admit it. But things had started to lift. The spark inside of him had finally been reignited. He could feel himself slip back into his old self. Carefree and happy. Not the uptight businessman he had been for too long. It was all thanks to Magnus, Linc and Cassie. Without the three of them he could have been dead. The smoke had taken its toll and now they were lying on the beach. Hector could feel the grains of sand digging in the back of his head. Slowly he glided his hand over the rough surface, enjoying how it felt against the palm of his hand. How long had they been lying there? What time was it? “I think we could swim to Venezuela.” Then his vision became clouded and he could no longer see the stars. Something was blocking his line of vision. “Linc?” A deep frown formed on his face as he peered up at the younger vampire. With great effort he managed to hauled himself upright to double check it was Linc in front of him. “Are… are you here to swim to Venezuela with us?” His attention drifted off back towards the ocean. If he narrowed his eyes he could just about see the outline of Venezuela… maybe. “Me and your dad have had an eventful night… we may or may not be banned from the casino… and then we smoked a lot and here we are on the beach.” Stroking the sand and staring out in the ocean. The great big beautiful Ocean. “On second thoughts we shouldn’t swim to Venezuela. You might let me freeze to death, again.” He let out a chuckle as his gaze ticked up to Linc, “We were one of the fools who boarded the Titanic. I froze to death in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Awful way to die by the way. Would recommend against it. Your dad managed to find himself a piece of wood to climb onto.” The truth was Hector had given Magnus the piece of wood, insisting he used it. There was no point in them both freezing to death and sinking to the bottom of the ocean. MAGNUS DAYNE & LINCOLN CROWNE

They hadn’t come back. Again. After England he should’ve been used to it, but when Magnus and Hector hadn’t shown up by the time he’d walked Cassie back to her room, the concern had started to twitch in the back of his mind. When Lawrence had shown up before the two of them it had gone grown to full on worry. Aruba was like a tenth the size of London, but it didn’t mean the pair of them couldn’t find trouble here, especially when they could drink their weight in frozen margaritas at any bar on the island.
Laying on the sofa bed in the dark, head down at its foot to see past the breakfast bar, Linc squinted at the door. The clock had ticked around a full two hours, the time between the seconds seeming to be counted slower and slower the longer he watched. Given the state of the pair of them the last time they’d pulled a disappearing act for the night, he’d likely hear them coming long before he saw them. Hector would’ve talked one of the resort’s cart drivers into letting him take it for a spin, tucking a hundred dollar into the bloke’s pocket on the third attempt. They’d speed across the resort, trying to wring every possible extra mile out of it to break the speed limit. The pair of them would be flopping around like they were on the back of one of those rodeo bulls because they’d be too out of it to remember to hold on as they hit the speed bumps. If they were lucky they’d avoid hitting the cars outside. Come morning the cart would probably be parked in the middle of the road and Magnus and Hector would be laying in a pile at their apartment door. Honestly, at their age they should’ve known better.
Amused at the mental image, and the photos he might’ve taken of it to show Cassie, he made it through another hour before he threw back the sheets and got up. Linc reached for his phone and pulled the t-shirt he’d thrown over the back of one of the high chairs at the breakfast bar earlier and padded towards the door. Straining his hearing didn’t catch anything more than the faint hum of voices from one of the other apartments in their block and the hooting of one of those weird little owls they’d seen sitting in the grass outside the other night. There were probably still some clubs open downtown, tourists stumbling away from them drunk and still hell bent on being on the beach at dawn the next morning – all the better to make sure they could go home ten shades darker than when they’d arrived. From here he couldn’t hear any of it though.
At the door, he stopped to jam his feet into his Vans and glanced back into the room. Lawrence and Kit were still asleep. Even if they were awake neither one of them would probably have worried. Aruba was an island, how much trouble could they get into on it? Plenty. They’d had over seven hundred years of practice at it after all – and he’d likely heard more stories than the rest of them about it (more than he ever wanted to hear with some of them).
Linc checked he had his room key tucked into his phone case and stepped out into the dark. He could’ve found the keys and driven to find them, but the minute he pulled up the tracker on his phone (something he’d tried on and off since he’d realised they hadn’t just gone for a drink on their own after dinner) Magnus’ finally pinged on the tracking app. On the beach, not too far from the resort, or he thought as he squinted at the screen, maybe in the water. He stared at it for a long minute as he started walking in that direction. Nah, it wasn’t moving and he imagined if they were floating out there like shark bait they would’ve been. Next time they all went out for dinner, he was gonna have to corral them after.
The sun had gone down hours ago, but Linc still squinted slightly as he hit the sand, studying its pale stretches for the lumps of two drunk old men – very old men. Most of the loungers had been locked up for the night, leaving the two of them the only things that stood out in the moonlight. Even if he hadn’t spotted them as he walked, Linc imagined the smell of the smoke would’ve caught his senses. Not just drunk then, although they were definitely that.
Hector’s hand skimmed over the sand, idly toying with it like a kid as he muttered something about swimming to Venezuela. He snorted and shook his head, he didn’t definitely have Hector’s confidence in it. Not a chance,” he snorted. ”If I followed the two of you we’d likely all end up in Cuba instead.” Even drunk Hector would probably insist he could find his way to Venezuela blindfolded (there was a time in 1587 when his boat had sunk and he’d done just that). He padded around the pair of them, squinting down at Magnus to make sure he was still in one piece after their apparently eventful night. Oh, here they went.
”I can tell you’ve had a lot of it, plenty of booze too I imagine,” he muttered, shaking his head as he studied the two of them. ”What did you do to get banned? You didn’t try robbin’ the place, did you?” Possible, although he imagined the two of them might’ve tried compelling their way into that, which might’ve let them get away with it. Bingo. He’d been right about Hector having a sailing story. The Caribbean wasn’t exactly known for freezing people to death though. Linc’s brows furrowed, laughter rolling up from his chest before it broke off. ”The pair of you were on Titanic?” His gaze ticked back and forth between the two of them. From the stories they told you’d have thought they’d been a part of every major historical event. Linc lifted a hand, the laughter building again. ”Wait, wait, wait, you’re sayin’ my dad was Rose and you were Jack? You’re shittin’ me. Please don’t tell me he painted you like one of his French girls…” Linc stared at Magnus, trying to hold back his laughter but failing miserably as his shoulders shook with it.

━ evil notions come free ━ PERHAPS THEY NEEDED THIS. PERHAPS IT WAS A requirement in their old age━getting so drunk they couldn’t remain upright any longer. Like a reset every time they went on holiday, giving them a much-needed break before their inevitable return to the Real World.
The “mistake” was going to the casino (though, if he had to repeat it, he wouldn’t change their course for the night) already incredibly drunk, which led them to being thrown out due to “card counting.” Preposterous. How would you play cards adequately if you did not count them?
But everything in this world was a scam, of course, and the owners didn’t want to see anyone winning.
They ended up with a joint in the sand, and Magnus couldn’t be happier, he thought. He had a breezy, warm night, multiple vices, the stars, the beach, and his best friend. How could it get any better? Especially when he knew there were no issues at home or anywhere else. When he returned to Mystic Falls, Johanna would be waiting with open arms. Perhaps he’d send her a message tonight.
Magnus pulled his arm of the imprint of the sand-angel he’d forgotten that he’d made to pat around for his phone. Eventually, his friend began to rattle on about swimming, and Magnus forgot all about the message he was going to send. “Ah… but when I want to walk, ya tell me ‘m mad.” Magnus puffed faux-indignantly, then began to grin. When Hector had crashed his car a few weeks earlier, Magnus had been the one to suggest walking home originally. But no, Hector was very much against that.
Before he could agree, Hector said Linc’s name, and Magnus realized his eyes had been closed. He was missing the stars… and now his son’s face. He peeled them open and grinned lazily at Linc. “Hmmm… Cuba. We’re not American, ‘ey wouldn’t mind us.” Magnus said, then put a lot of effort into shaking his head, though the movements were slow and short.
“No… I wouldn’t let ‘im do that again.” Hector had robbed banks for a large portion of his life, and Magnus wouldn’t let him rob anywhere else on this island. Firstly, it was too small━they’d be caught in minutes.
And then Hector brought up the Titanic again, and Magnus scoffed. “Did… no such thing.” He muttered. His eyes had somehow closed again. He opened one of them to peer up at Linc. “Who the ‘ell are Rose an’ Jack?” He grumbled, scrubbing his brain for the information, “Oh…” Magnus puffed, “From that film James put out recently…” He said, reaching over to smack the back of his hand on Hector’s arm lightly. “‘Member? Stole our story ‘n turned it into… that redhead got ‘er t*ts out in that picture…” Magnus trailed off, then settled his head back into the sand. “Should’ve given us royalties. Damn artistic types,” He puffed, then lifted his hand and pointed at Linc, eyes flying open, sudden concentration on his face. “Lemme tell ya somethin’, boy… that door woulda tipped. ‘Ector tried ta climb on… didn’t work. Too much weight. And anyway, ‘e lived. I didn’t peel ‘is ‘and off an’ let ‘im sink.” He lost steam by the end of his rant, and frowned as he looked sideways at Hector.
“I’d never let ya go,” Magnus said without a hint of humour, groping blindly for Hector’s arm again, slapping the sand before he finally caught it and wrapped his fingers around, squeezing tight to emphasize his words. He didn’t make the connection to the movie.

Tomorrow morning, they would wake up feeling fresh, without a single trace of a hangover, which only encouraged them to drink more. Unlike the humans, there was no deterrent for them. Sure, they got kicked out of the casino, but that was a minor detail. One of them could go back the following day and compel everyone to forget what happened. It was moments like this with Magnus that he wished he could capture and keep forever in his memory, but this was only one of a thousand memories, and there would be a thousand more after this. Most people—especially humans—would never experience this level of friendship. Over time, people tended to drift apart, taking different paths in life, but Hector and Magnus always made sure their paths crossed every few decades. For the times when their paths ran in opposite directions, they sent letters. “We would never have made it.” They only got a short distance in their journey before Kit had to pull over so Hector could empty his guts—a humbling experience, to say the least. Cuba was a great idea, and while Hector was a strong swimmer, he wasn’t sure how far he’d get. “Okay, Linc, I take offense to that comment. I am a human compass. These waters…” He gestured clumsily to the sea behind him, “are my home… I could get us from here to Australia just using this.” He tapped the side of his head lightly. A long, dramatic sigh rolled from Hector at Magnus’ comment. Just before they entered the casino, they’d had a very slurred conversation, mostly Magnus telling Hector he wasn’t allowed to rob the place. “Card counting.” It wasn’t clear which of the two behaviors had landed them in hot water, but it was probably a joint effort. After sinking as many drinks as they had, it was hard to be coy; their voices carried across the casino as they spoke in a language only the two of them could understand. As soon as they boarded the Titanic, both noticed the lack of lifeboats hanging from the side, but Hector wasn’t going to let a ticket go to waste. His gaze turned to Magnus as he patted the back of his hand. “Yeah. Where’s our cut of the money? Bloody unacceptable.” Of course, James had modified their story because no one was going to watch a movie about two men trying to survive. “Magnus was the one who painted a woman, and I had sex in the car… or was it the other way around? Anyway… it was actually pretty awful in the end. I lost a lot of good suits that evening.” He sighed sadly, thinking of his suitcase sinking to the bottom of the ocean, filled with expensive clothes. “Your dad is right. That door couldn’t take the weight of two people.” He flashed Magnus a lazy grin, “I know you wouldn’t, and I’d freeze to death all over again to keep you on that door.” He placed his hand over Magnus’, giving it a squeeze. It was enough to make an old man almost cry. MAGNUS DAYNE & LINCOLN CROWNE

An eight year old trying to drag his near comatose parents in off of the balcony had been horrific – heavy limbs slipping out of his grip, the smell of sour alcohol oozing from every pore, his pleas whispered into deaf ears to try and avoid the neighbours hearing it all (as though his parents’ addictions had been a secret from anybody on the estate). Fast forward a couple of decades, throw a change of parents into the mix, and somehow it was all different. He wasn’t standing here terrified that Hector or Magnus would choke to death on their own vomit. They were old men, old friends laying drunk and high on a beach, reliving their glory days. Give them a couple of hours and they’d have peeled themselves up to stagger back to the apartment without any help.
There was still the tiniest bit of relief breaking through the dark, buried depths of his brain when Magnus managed to open his eyes and grin up at him – the trauma shoved back in the mental box he kept it locked in. Linc snorted a breath out through his nose. Maybe they wouldn’t mind Magnus, but Hector had probably marauded his way across the island at some point. ”You sure?” Linc asked lightly, making sure he didn’t snicker and hurt Hector’s feelings. ”You know they say the memory starts going first, and I’m guessing it’s been a while since you sailed across the world.” Pillaged his way across it more likely. Luc had dropped enough hints about what the two of them had gotten up to in Hector’s pirate days. Hector had gotten them all here, although he figured he might not’ve done if he’d been in this state, they’d be floating in circles around the Bermuda Triangle instead.
The pair of them seemed to find enough trouble without cutlasses and skull and crossbones (did pirates even actually use them or was it Hollywood bullshit?). ”Thank God,” Linc muttered under his breath. Even off his head Magnus still had some sense. He squinted at the pair of them, wondering which one of them had been doing it. Hector probably, dragging Magnus along with him. ”I’m guessin’ it went too well.” Probably too obviously, one of them counting out loud, thinking it was just happening in their heads. The fact that neither one of them was sporting blood stains meant it hadn’t been too violent a throwing out at least. They weren’t gonna have to flee the island in the middle of the night. Linc’s brows rose, his smirk broad as Magnus’ got indignant about what James Cameron had done with what was supposedly their story. God, he hoped the guy had taken plenty of poetic license with what happened. Magnus was calling him James like he’d been another bestie. Hearing Magnus get crude was always weird, like he was seeing a Pope passing out dollar bills at a strip club. ”He probably used them to pay for his therapy,” he mumbled under his breath, especially if Hector had started spouting details to him like he was now. ”I don’t need to know which way around it is, thanks.” He’d heard enough of these stories the last time the two of them had got into this sort of state. Linc winced, wishing you could compel yourself into forgetting this stuff. His laughter was still hitting in little bursts. Cassie was gonna end up crying when he told her about all of this.
Shaking his head, Linc dropped down on the sand next to the two of them – saving Magnus from straining his neck and figuring neither one of them would be in any shape to walk back yet. ”You’re a good friend,” Linc assured Magnus, reaching out to pat his arm fondly. It wasn’t just a line. The two of them had been friends for seven hundred years, keeping each other alive through the absolute worst of things. For that he’d always be grateful. If they hadn’t, he wouldn’t have been here now, he’d have been tossed into the Thames like rubbish or dragged out by whoever Wesley got to take his place, left in some alleyway. His body would’ve gone unclaimed either way.
”You’re both sappy, you know that, right?” he told them with a chuckle. ”Who had the jealous fiancé tryin’ to shoot at them or was that just some bloke on board jealous of the two of you?” He propped his arms on his bent knees, staring out at the horizon. Who was he gonna have on his side that way in a few centuries? Was he still gonna be hanging out with his dad like this, or would it be him and Lawrence? His heart ached as he thought about where Cassie would be then. Witches weren’t immortal like them and he didn’t want to think of a world without her in it.

━ evil notions come free ━ “HUH?” MAGNUS ASKED, FURROWING HIS BROW at Linc. He hadn’t heard what the lad said, but he was over it in an instant. Magnus’ head flopped back down into the sand, and he looked sideways at Hector. “Mmm… no. That’s the right way.” He nodded firmly, ignoring Linc’s comment about it.
“Poor suits,” He scoffed, “People died, ‘Ector.” Then he paused and began to chuckle to himself, “Damn English people still never learned t’swim.” He shook his head as if chastising his country as a whole, then looked at Linc and pointed, “You know ‘owta swim, eh, boy?” Magnus asked somewhat aggressively, like it was the most important question in the world, then dropped his hand. Before Linc could answer, he muttered, “Right. Yes, ya do. I know that.” And then dissolved into his explanation of how much he loved his best friend.
Magnus teared up as he stared sideways at Hector, a grin spreading on his face. “‘Ow lucky am I, eh?” He asked with a sniffle, “Keepin’ my best mate for ‘undreds of years, ‘avin’ my son ‘ere…” He looked over at Linc, shining his smile on him next. “Damn right I am. I’m a good bloody father, too.” Magnus chuckled lightly, then shifted to slap his other hand on top of Hector’s, so that they formed a kind of hand-holding-tower, squeezed, then finally broke both grips.
At Linc’s question, he sat up suddenly, leaning his weight on the elbow closest to Hector. Magnus made himself a little dizzy, but that was okay━he got over it quickly. “I didn’t know she was engaged!” Magnus exclaimed, “‘Ow could I know?! I did ‘em a favour, alright? That was a loveless marriage… and she needed to know what she was missin’.” He chuckled, rolling his head over to flash Hector a wide, goofy smile. “We sure showed ‘er, eh?”
