━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ THE GIRL AND HER STORY HAD GIVEN HIM a headache. Well, perhaps a phantom one, but it was irritating nonetheless. He’d hoped she would’ve let something slip about why she was really here, but, even after diving into her head, it was clear that she didn’t have a clue herself. Randomly being brought back to life had the stench of her reaper brother all over it━why he’d waited so long, Elias had yet to find out, but perhaps working with his demon brother had made him sentimental. Or, alternatively, he wanted to use her to trigger some sort of feeling in the depths of their brother’s mind. As if any humanity could be present in a demon.
He shielded her behind him, using his large frame and a reaper’s veil, as he called Damien. Standing on the raised section of his library, his large chair the only thing visible behind him, Elias waited for Damien to arrive, a slight smirk twisting up one edge of his lips.
“I know what you did.” He said once Damien appeared in his library. “Did you think I wouldn’t find out?” He practically seethed, barrelling on, not giving Damien a moment to respond. “Why do you think I value the balance so much? I can feel every soul on this earth, and I know when something goes wrong. When someone is brought back despite already having moved onto their afterlife.”
Elias reached behind him, blindly grabbed Constance Beck’s arm and hauling her forward. In the same moment, the veil shielding her dropped, and he let go. She stumbled, and though he hadn’t intended to send her falling down the stairs, he didn’t reach out to stop her.
Constance managed to stay on her feet, seemingly not seeing her brother until she fell into him, his body the only thing stopping her from meeting the floor. Elias watched with disdain as she turned her head up, her face flooding with excitement and joy after the second it took to process her brother’s face.
“Damien!” She practically squealed, and Elias puffed out an impatient breath as she used the arms already flung around the reaper (to catch her fall) to squeeze him in a hug. DAMIEN BECK | tag connie pls thx

It had to be brothers. There was nothing to the assholes in the ramshackle cabin miles out in the wilderness that surrounded Mystic Falls that really reminded him of how he and Sonny had been back in the day, but the two of them squabbling around him in death brought Sonny to mind all the same. Was this how they’d have ended up if that son of a bitch demon hadn’t managed to slip inside of Sonny? Stuck in some shithole together, driving each other crazy as claustrophobia had set in, squabbling up to the boiling point and beyond.
Damien ducked as the taller brother swung for his humpty-dumpty little bro. The blow probably wouldn’t have touched him really, but he was done with their shit. ”Enough!” he roared, wishing to fuck that he’d ignored this summons long enough that someone else had to deal with it. If Leah had been the one sent in she’d probably have short circuited their brains long enough to get them to their afterlife. Considering how little they’d paid attention to his arrival, he wasn’t gonna have the same luck.
Hands thrust between them broke them up long enough for him to at least give them the choice – come with me now or stay here. Alright, maybe he’d used the offer that they could spend their entire afterlives sorting out which of them had been the jackass who’d left the box of live ammo right next to the open fire. They were still bitching, but he’d managed to stow both of them down in Hell (apparently this hadn’t been their first rodeo when it came to fucking up with weapons) before that tug started in his chest. Sharp and insistent and bossy.
Death.
Resisting that woulda given him a shit ton of satisfaction, but knowing Elias he’d just have turned up in his apartment to crawl up his ass in half an hour anyway and he didn’t want that son of a bitch within a hundred miles of Aurora. He held out for a whole five minutes before he caved. Soon as he got it over and done with he could head home, maybe get an entire night in with his girlfriend.
The place didn’t seem to have changed since the last time they’d all been there, lined up in front of the new boss to have the rules stamped into them. Elias still stood up on his little stage, a smirk tugging at his lips. Damien silently aimed a come on gesture at Elias, weariness stamped into his expression.
It only took those first five words to have Damien letting out an equally tired chuckle. ”You’re gonna have to be more specific than that,” he muttered as Elias carried on talking. The pissy words hit just hard enough to have his brows drawing together. He hadn’t let the orders go to his head last time, but he had been more subtle about conspiring with the enemy, pushing Koschei to keep business separated from the family stuff, trying to keep Aurora safe at his place, out of the reach of the Mikaelsons and Elias alike.
”Maybe you shoulda thought about that before you decided to step into the big guy’s shoes,” Damien shot back snarkily. ”Seems to be he didn’t spend as much time as you do complaining about the job.” Elias was always gonna be that sorta boss though. The kind that moaned about the things they had no control over, like some jackasses trying to twist the laws of the universe. ”You’ve got us lurking ‘round Mystic Falls, you honestly think everybody who dies there is gonna stay that way?” Leave it to Elias to try and order them to stop people being resurrected too – kinda tough given that one of his own reapers had been brought back despite having moved on to his afterlife.
Puffing out a breath, Damien held up a hand. ”Honestly, you wanna start…” Lightening the load. The rest of the sentence wasn’t anything more than half formed in his head before Elias seemed to pull a woman out of nowhere, a twisted version of a magician and a rabbit out of his hat. She came stumbling down the short set of stairs towards him. The son of a bitch hadn’t even tried to stop her. Damien rocked back a step as he caught her, his arms going around the woman as his face twisted with distance.
”Are you alright?” he puffed, only sparing a quick glance down at her – she was far younger than he’d thought – before he scowled at Elias. ”What the fuck is wrong with you?”
Damien. The squeal of his name was unexpected and so damn familiar it almost drove him to his knees. Damien looked down at her, catching sight of his sister’s excited face for just a moment before Connie was hugging him. Connie. One arm went back around her, shielding her, as the other came up to brush her hair away from her face. ”What happened? How’d you get here? Did he touch you?” It wasn’t just disgust in his expression as he looked up this time. Raw hatred glittered black in his eyes. ”What did you do? Put a finger on her again and I’ll use that scythe of yours to take it off.” Right before he shoved it up the son of a bitch’s ass.

━ hope on this side of the grave ━ WELL, DAMIEN DIDN’T SEEM AS HAPPY TO see her again as she thought he’d be. Connie was about to bark at him for it, but she’d just squealed his name, excited to see him again and hug him and everything. The last time she saw him was when he’d brought their mom to Heaven, so it’d been a long time. It didn’t feel like that, though. Time didn’t seem like it’d stretched that far, but it would always be ‘too long’ before she saw her big brother again. That’s just how it was. They went from seeing one another every day to… this.
And now the big Boss Man was giving him shit over having her here━did he think that Damien brought her back? That would be super nice, but why didn’t he do that before? It had to have been a while since Mom died… didn’t it?
In the split second between her yelling his name and getting angry that he wasn’t excited, he finally noticed her. He gave her a real hug, and Connie was beaming up at him, laughing off his anger. “This is why I used him and Sonny as a threat in high school.” She said over her shoulder to Elias, giggling before she gave Damien another squeezing hug. She let go of him finally, but only so they could have a conversation without standing too close.
“Nothin’ happened, Damien! Chill out!” She laughed, indicating to Elias over her shoulder with her thumb. “He actually scooped me up from my grave and brought me to you. Sooo, kinda cool of him. Not a big talker, though.” She teased with a wide grin. “He did read my mind or whatever after making me tell him my life story, but that was the only touchin’ goin’ on.”
“Did you bring her back to help get the demon out of your older brother?” There was a ghost of a smirk on Elias’ lips, and she wondered if she’d maybe told him too much info. Whoooops. Connie didn’t really believe it, though, ‘cause Damien was determined to help Sonny himself. She was the first soul he’d reaped, ‘cause he had to, like, prove somethin’, so it wasn’t like he could reverse it.
“Why’d you bring me back? I guess I can’t complain about bein’ able to live again, but what’s shakin’?” She asked a little quieter, like their conversation could be separate from his with Elias.

There hadn’t been much humour in him to start with – he was too wiped out from the job, mentally at least to find any of Elias’ shit funny – but what there was vanished in an instant. His sister dragged out of her peaceful afterlife, brought here to be dangled over his head like some bully trying to taunt a kid into doing just what they wanted. If Elias tried it, he’d use the scythe to cut off his fingers one joint at a time for daring to put his hands on Connie. Putting an end to him for good was meant to be a plan for the future, but right now, Damien could feel the burning desire to do it sizzling through him, radiating from the snarl he was aiming at that son of a bitch. He’d had worse excuses to kick the crap out of guys for his sister before.
The worst of his anger was quenched like a bucket of water had been tossed over it as Connie clung to him. Her laugh almost brought tears to his eyes – how many years had it been since he’d heard it? Too many and he’d have given anything to hear it again, but bringing Connie back to life wasn’t the way to do it. ”You won’t need to ask me to beat the crap out of this one,” he said tightly. He’d have done it for free even before Elias he pulled his family into this.
Puffing out a breath, he held on tight to Connie for as long as she’d let him, like if he let her go she’d vanish again. He wouldn’t put it past Elias to do that either. Dangling her in front of him, then tearing her away. He imagined he could still see the print of Elias’ hand on her from where he’d pushed her down the stairs. ”Not chill,” he muttered. Dark brows beetled over the tops of the frames of his glasses. ”What were you doing at her grave in the first place?” It was hard to believe that Elias would just be sitting here, waiting for a little bell to ring down on earth to indicate that yet another person had tried saying fuck you to death.
They could all forget chilling the fuck out right now. His brows shot higher as he looked down at Connie, then up at Elias. ”What the fuck man? She told you what you wanted to know and you still went digging around in her brain. What is it? Our whole family are liars?” Like a saint Elias probably couldn’t deal with that. He was the sort of asshole that believed in always telling the truth, even if it was a kick to the teeth.
Just like that. Self control had already been slippy, now it went shooting out of him. That smirk was gonna be gone in a minute, all those pearly white teeth scattered on the ground. The sensible voice in the back of his mind, the one that had always kept him on a semi-straight path tried to whisper a warning about biting off more than he could chew. Elias wasn’t just some smug son of a bitch reaper anymore, he was Death and he had all the power that came with it. ”Stay the fuck away from my family,” Damien growled through gritted teeth.
Their ma woulda swatted him hard for that. Boys from decent families didn’t swear, especially in front of women. For most of his existence, he’d held on to everything their parents had tried to instil in them, but Elias had a way of stripping all that away. Damien tried to swallow it back as Connie murmured to him. He drew in a deep breath, let it out a little shaky. ”You think if I had brought you back I’d have left you standing around your grave?” he asked. Taking his sister’s upper arms in his, Damien shook his head. Elias was probably listening to every word of this, but he didn’t give a shit about hiding the truth. ”I don’t know what happened, or who decided to get you out of there, but I promise, I’m gonna find out. Gonna keep you safe while I do too. You honestly don’t remember what happened? Nobody’s been around to talk to you?” Demons couldn’t get past the gates of Heaven, not even Lucifer, but there were plenty of other things that could screw around with the afterlife – including rogue reapers, like the one that was hitchhiking around in Cory.
