The heartbreak was lingering on for longer than he expected. He expected the pain to start to disappear by now, but it was still as raw as the day he found her with Tobi. Aruba was a chance to try and heal his broken heart. He was hoping to hook up some cute locals but then Penny appeared out of nowhere, opening the wounds back up. Seeing her standing there on the beach looking painfully beautiful struck him straight through the chest, again. The pain searing away at him wasn’t an unfamiliar feeling. It broke him when his parents abandoned him, then again when he was forced to leave Rosie. The difference was these people ceased to exist in his life after that, but Penny was still in town. Everytime he went outside he ran the risk of seeing her. The idea had come to him in a moment of desperation. He didn’t have to feel this way anymore. There was a family out there who held the ability to erase how he felt about Penny, but it wasn’t as simple as approaching one of them and asking nicely. If he tried that there was a strong chance someone would rip his heart out in an instant. Until he remembered Hector talking about how Elijah was also sick. The same virus was currently ripping through Elijah. Magnus held the cure. That was his ticket to healing his heartbreak. But could he really do it? Could he erase her from his mind, as if she never mattered to him? The thought terrified him as much as it tempted him. Every time he saw her, every time her name popped up on his phone or in conversation, it was like a knife twisting in his chest. He wanted to forget her, to be free of the torment she unknowingly inflicted on him. Penny’s smile, the way her eyes sparkled when she talked about dinosaurs (and other old stuff), and the scent of her perfume lingering in his mind like a ghost—the memories haunted him. They were beautiful, but they were also painful. Penny wasn’t his. She never had been, not really. They were close, but a line had always existed, one which he decided to cross one day and was immediately pushed back. It would have been extremely bold of Lawrnece to walk up to Magnus and ask him for a vial of his blood. The other vampire would probably talk Lawrence out of his borderline stupid idea— which is why he hadn’t told Teddy or Phoebe what he was planning to do. Linc was his only hope. The one thing that stood between him and his chance to be free of the pain. He wandered into the club, heading straight downstairs, knowing Linc should be somewhere in the bar. He could hear the faint sound of typing from Hector’s office, but downstairs he could only hear one person shuffling around in the storeroom. He let out a sigh of relief when Linc emerged. He’d never actually been more pleased to see the other vampire. “Linc. I need your help… and it’s a big ask of me.” He climbed up to one of the stools at the bar, resting his elbows on the surface, “I’m gonna jump straight into it. I need you to get me some of your dad’s blood ‘cause I’m gonna do a little exchange of sorts with Elijah Mikaelson.” Just uttering the word Mikaelson made him feel queasy, “I’m gonna ask him to compel me… to forget about Penny and I know it’s a crazy idea but… I can’t go on like this. I’m wakin’ up every single day in pain.” The sort of pain a few aspirins couldn’t sort out either. LINCOLN CROWNE

You could always tell the kids who had money at school, or those whose parents could afford to take them to Clacton for a week in a caravan at least. They turned up to the first week of school tanned, some little bit of tat clutched in their hand to show off to the rest of the class. Me and my dad found this shell on the beach in Majorca or ’this is the badge I got for being the best swimmer in the holiday park. Little trophies that just left him feeling like his nose was being rubbed in it. He hadn’t been the only kid whose parents hadn’t been able to afford to go away, but Linc woulda laid money on him being the only one in the class whose parents had spent those six weeks off their heads instead.
It wasn’t like he’d gotten a tan this time – he was always gonna be exactly how he’d been when he’d died, just on the wrong side of pasty – but maybe he’d been a little smug when they’d gotten back from Aruba. Who wouldn’t be? A tropical holiday with his dad, and more importantly with his girlfriend. Even Remzi hadn’t been able to wreck it. He’d sailed to Aruba on a super yacht, he’d laid on a beach, made his first sand castle. He’d really slept with Cassie for the first time. Those last two definitely marked him out as a baby vamp, but he didn’t give two shits. Baby or not, he had so much of what he’d desperately wanted for so long and that meant the world.
Music buzzed from his phone as he made his way back and forth between the store room and the downstairs bar, stocking up for later. This was his favourite time of day here. He didn’t have to watch his back around any narky customers, or around Hannya (with Lawrence free of her grip, he didn’t want to end up being her next toy). Nobody gave a shit if he had some cheesy eighties hair metal on, or that he sang along to it under his breath. Later on Hector would throw the doors open and the place would fill with people who’d probably prefer tunes from the 1580s to the garbage that had been produced in the 1980s.
Once the place opened he’d dial the happy down, acting like a good little busy bee until the place closed. Any sort of outward joy here was an invite to someone spoiling it, and honestly, he didn’t wanna rub Lawrence’s nose in it. Not all of them had come back from walking on air. Breaking things off with Hannya probably came with some deeply incised wounds and having to holiday with her on top of everything else had to leave those wounds stinging. Lawrence might be a dick on occasion, but he didn’t deserve any of that. Maybe he should have a word with his dad or Hector, get them to sit Lawrence down for a pep talk, the same as they’d given him. As corny as it’d seemed, it had really helped.
”An angel’s smile is what you sell, you promised me Heaven, then put me through Hell.” Linc broke off with a snort as he hefted another crate of beer bottles and headed out into the bar. They could’ve written the song about Hannya. Spotting Lawrence emerging into the bar as he walked out, Linc paused for just a heartbeat before he carried on behind the bar. ”My help? You’ve gotta be hard up,” he joked, grinning at Lawrence for a moment before he realised he was actually serious.
Like he’d been dunked in cold water (again), he frowned and set the crate aside. Tension bunched his shoulders as he propped himself against the other side of the bar. ”What’s up?” Lawrence didn’t wait long to spill the whole story out. It was a really big bloody ask. The only way it could’ve been worse was if he’d told him to ask Hector for a pint or two. They might’ve spent all that time in the prison world but he still would’ve bricked it a little.
Linc let out a long breath. He really was a baby vampire in the grand scheme of things, but he’d heard enough about the Mikaelsons – had seen enough of Elijah – to know that they didn’t just go around handing out favours. Especially for something this big. ”It is crazy,” he said honestly. ”I know what that’s like and it fuckin’ sucks, but do you honestly wanna wipe out all the good with the bad? What if things change with her tomorrow?” Without the memories, the good, the bad and the ugly, chances of things swerving back that way again were slim. Life wasn’t like one of those Hollywood movies where you automatically got a do over to get the happy ending that you should’ve had in the first place.

There was a world of pain that Elijah could erase for Lawrence. He could make him forget about his parents, how they decided to turn their back on their son rather than helping him, but that pain wasn't just of his to erase. He shared it with Phoebe. The issues with Penny were his alone though. There was no one around he could share his heartbreak with. It felt like it was his to bear alone and he was crushing underneath the weight of it all. Everytime he was convinced there was light at the end of the tunnel it would disappear again, leaving him in the darkness. He knew realistically he should have opened up to Teddy about it all. The man had endured the pain of losing his wife caused by his own actions. He could have spoken to Phoebe too, she’d lost Joshua. But no, he was choosing to take another route completely. At times it was difficult to appreciate there were people around him who cared for him. For decades he was on his own, answering to no one but himself. There was not a single person at his side who cared for him. Back then he was just a young man trying to navigate the world and failing over and over. His parents didn’t equip him with any life skills, yet somehow he’d made it to this point. How the fuck had he made it so far? He was convinced he would have died in the first two years. Against all the odds he made it through. For once Lawrence wasn’t against the idea of asking Linc for help. He’d already opened up to him a little in Aruba, sharing snippets of his past with Linc. It helped them to work past their differences– differences that came out of nowhere. Lawrence couldn’t go as far as saying he fully trusted Linc, but he needed to test that theory. Even if he refused to get the blood would he run back to his dad? “Tomorrow?” He exclaimed before laughing, “We called things off like six months ago. Nothing's gonna change.” Penny wasn’t going to suddenly wake up tomorrow and decide she wanted to be with Lawrence. The opportunity had present itself more than once and she never took it. “I wanna get rid of everythin’. The good and the bad… even the good memories are too much for me now.” The memories are tainted now. He couldn't enjoy them anymore. “I’m not sayin’ it's a good idea but I can’t see any other way out.” It was a fucking terrible idea, full of holes but that had never stopped Lawrence from pushing on before. He was the king of making bad decisions. LINCOLN CROWNE

If there was one word he would’ve used to describe his parents it was selfish. Just how self-centred they were had only become clearer when Magnus had taken him in. He’d gone from parents whose only thoughts had ever been for themselves to a dad who would give everything to protect him – including breaking his best friend’s neck to stop him from tearing his heart out. If he’d been half as good a father to Edward III then it was no wonder he’d been such a decent King after the screw up his real dad had been (times had repeated themselves, even if it took 700 years for them to come around again).
Linc felt a twist of regret in his chest. When Magnus had first convinced Hector to take him on at the club he hadn’t exactly gone out of his way to get friendly with his coworkers. Kit had been kinda intimidating and rarely ventured downstairs anyway. Lawrence was always around, but he hadn’t really gotten to know him before he’d gone and given him a bollocking for upsetting Cassie. Add what had happened with the London Eye and he’d reached a point where he hadn’t given a shit what was going on with Lawrence. Part of him would’ve probably believed that whatever crap was going on in his life he’d deserved, at least a little. In other words, he’d been taking right after them – being a selfish little shit. There was nothing like nearly dying for teaching you just how far your own head had been up your arse.
The apology that had spilled out in Aruba had been genuine. Lawrence hadn’t deserved the shit that had happened to him, or that he’d said to him. Being infected with the virus at the time had only been a partial excuse for it all. Their chat hadn’t turned the two of them into besties, but it should’ve been proof that he needed to get to know Lawrence a bit more – including the shit that had gone down with his girlfriend (former girlfriend). He winced at the realisation that what had happened with Hannya probably hadn’t helped any of it. Apparently he could though.
Cracking a joke with Lawrence about him apparently being hard up if he was coming to him went down like a bit of a lead balloon. Linc’s brows drew together, concern prickling through him as he studied Lawrence. He was the last person who could’ve called himself an expert on relationships – he’d only ever had the one – but he knew plenty about holding on to hope, especially when it was slippery. ”It’s been six months, not six hundred years.” He didn’t know for sure if Penny was supernatural, but if she was there was a good chance they could go centuries before they patched it up. ”Me and Cassie ended up just friends for months before we got together. I wouldn’t start givin’ up hope yet.” But Lawrence obviously only saw the broken bits of his relationship, not the chance that they’d one day be forged back together into something stronger than they’d ever had.
Linc’s gaze darted over Lawrence’s shoulder, looking towards the door. It would’ve been amazing timing if Hector or his dad appeared now. They’d probably both have an entirely encyclopaedia of good advice, none of which he could pull out of his own tiny pool of experience. He swallowed hard and looked back at Lawrence. He hadn’t been the only one battered by life lately, but he’d thought Lawrence would struggle back onto his feet before he did. ”Sounds like a huge step to take, one you might not be able to come back from if you start changin’ your mind later.” Only there wouldn’t be anything of her left in his head to change things for him later, would there? ”I’m sorry you’re goin’ through this shit,” Linc muttered. ”I’m not sayin’ he’ll be able to sort it all out, but, you know, maybe you should talk to Magnus. He’s old fashioned, but honestly, he’s pretty savvy about this stuff most of the time.” Except for when it came to his opinion about Cassie. Surely that was more about her dating his son than his opinions on women in general though.

The ball had been in Penny’s court since the night he showed up at her door, but she hadn’t done anything with it. They’d seen each other since, shared a few awkward conversations, but she never once hinted at wanting to get back together. It was over. Done. Now, Lawrence knew it was time to move on. His heart would eventually heal—he knew that—but he didn’t want to wait. There was a fast track to getting over her, and he fully intended to take it. The conversation he was about to have with Linc was something that wouldn’t have happened just a few months ago. Back then, Lawrence would have rather risked stealing blood from Magnus than talk to Linc about any of this. But their conversation in Aruba had solidified the idea that they were on the same page. Lawrence had caught a glimpse of it in that alleyway—Linc was just another new vampire struggling to handle everything, just like him. They were both too stubborn to realise it at first. It felt like six hundred years had passed. Penny being in town didn’t help either, especially when she occasionally stopped by the bar for a drink. “It’s different with you and Cassie, though. Me and Penny? We were never friends from the start. In fact, I hated her at first,” Lawrence said. Somehow, without even trying, Penny had worn him down. “I told her I wanted to be with her, and she said no. All while Tobi was in her fucking bed, by the way. So how could I not give up hope?” He shook his head, remembering how Penny had shattered any last shred of hope. There was no going back to what they had. “But it’s not all her fault. I was an asshole to her at that Christmas party at the hotel.” He practically pushed her into bed with Tobi. It was hard not to think about what could’ve happened if he hadn’t turned off his emotions. Would they have ended up together? Or would she have rejected him for some other reason? Stupid fucking Halloween party. There was no way he was going to another one of Hector’s Halloween parties. They always ended with blood and bodies. Once the compulsion was done, there’d be no going back. “Yeah, but I won’t even know it’s happened. I won’t be able to change my mind. Once Elijah compels me to forget about Penny and that I ever went to his apartment, it’ll be like it never happened,” Lawrence said, the thought of letting a borderline-crazy original vampire mess with his memories unsettling. Could he even trust Elijah to do what he asked? There was always a chance Elijah might mess with his mind just for fun. “No, I don’t want to talk to anyone about this. I haven’t even told Phoebe. You’re literally the only person who knows,” he admitted. He’d tell Phoebe eventually, but if she knew about his plan, she’d never let him go to Elijah’s. And the plan? It was full of holes. Friends had seemed a safe point to start from after he’d lost control, but even as he’d agreed to it Linc had known he didn’t want to be just friends with Cassie. They’d been friends (alright, ones who’d kissed ten minutes after they’d met), but that stage hadn’t lasted too long. He’d liked her immediately and that first kiss in the store room had screamed that Cassie had felt the same. It had been inevitable that they’d dash forward through all the stages in between friendship, having the hots for one another and falling in love. Magnus had wrung his hands over it (still was at times), but it was good for him and even when he’d been scared his feelings would push him to do something stupid, he’d wanted it so badly.
With the same choice dangled in front of Lawrence would he take it? Neither him or Penny were the puppy love sort – they were both probably way too old for that – but surely both of them still had hearts soft enough to have felt the love for one another if it was there. Lawrence’s dose of it was big enough that he could practically see the cracks in his barely beating heart. Penny had hurt him and with his heart stinging, he couldn’t see that there was a chance to come at their relationship again from another angle. It was sad in a way, nobody ought to be alone, especially when it could be for centuries. You only had to look at Hector and Magnus to see what spending centuries mourning the woman you loved did to you (although maybe sleeping with a thousand women during all those years wasn’t something Lawrence would bitch about too much).
He really needed one of them here, with exactly one relationship under his belt, he couldn’t play the expert. Linc shrugged as Lawrence pointed out it had been different with him and Cassie. ”Did she hate you though?” he asked. That probably didn’t matter half as much as the fact that Tobi was in Penny’s bed. His gaze darted towards the staircase like Tobi would come dancing in, wearing one of those sequined shirts to rub Lawrence’s nose in it. Lawrence and Tobi didn’t seem like they’d have appealed to the same woman, but there was no accounting for taste. ”Being an asshole once doesn’t excuse havin’ another bloke in your bed,” Linc puffed. ”Maybe he was just a rebound, some way of tryin’ to deny how she really feels about you.” It seemed like so much more than just a single no. Penny had given the impression of moving on and from the sounds of things, Lawrence had appeared at her door just in time to see it.
Once Elijah had done his mind scrambling compulsion trick, Lawrence wouldn’t remember any of it. Good and bad all wiped out. The thought twisted his stomach, leaving him reaching for a bottle of beer for Lawrence, just to do something that would let him ignore the feeling. If he’d thought it was a possibility he might’ve done the same thing in those desperate days after Cassie’s rejection had left him … hurting people. ”You won’t, but they will. What are you gonna do if Penny comes around a month for now, sayin’ she’s made a mistake and she wants to be with you?” Not having a clue who she was would make that beyond awkward. Wiping the whole lot out with a few words just seemed like making a hole for all the shit to pile up in when it started creeping back in. In the end it would be impossible to ignore.
”You know she’ll take you out of it,” Linc muttered, nodding as it all fell into place. He’d seen Lawrence’s sister around here. She might’ve been tiny, but looked like the sort who’d be happy to try and knock sense, literally, into her big brother. ”Magnus is gonna ask about it all when I ask him for his blood. I’m gonna have to tell him somethin’ about it. What do you want me to say when he asks?” Maybe if he told Magnus just how badly Penny had broken Lawrence’s heart, he might get it. He’d been through his own heartbreak, albeit with a woman who’d forced him into a relationship with her in the first place. The love on Magnus’ part had been real and he might just have been desperate enough at times after to have considered doing the same.

They started as enemies, but something slowly shifted between them. You’d catch them in the coffee shop at dawn, talking and laughing like old friends. It was during those early hours that Lawrence could step outside, thanks to Penny stealing his daylight ring. He should have hated her more for that—she’d taken the last thing left from his human days. On rough days, he’d glance down at the ring and run his thumb over it, using it as a reminder of who he was before he turned. Sometimes he convinced himself it was proof his parents did love him, that they hadn’t sent him off into the world without some protection from daylight. That had to count for something, right? But after he found Phoebe, that thought slipped away. His parents had a second chance to get things right, and yet they’d made the same mistakes with her. Eventually, he found a sliver of forgiveness for his mother, her death proving she’d loved him in the end. But that love only fed his resentment toward his father. Lawrence chuckled at Linc’s question. “Oh yeah, she hated me.” At least, that’s the impression she gave in the beginning—and he certainly had reasons to dislike her. She’d swiped his ring. “I don’t know. They’ve been hooking up for a while… but I’m not surprised. Tobi would hook up with anyone.” It was hard not to resent Tobi; in Lawrence’s mind, he’d taken Penny from him. Their conversation in Aruba only confirmed that they would never get back together. She’d told him it was “better this way.” Lawrence hadn’t even agreed, mostly because she’d never explained why she ended things. “She won’t. She’s had plenty of chances to fix things with me.” He couldn’t keep holding onto that pain, not anymore. Phoebe would’ve been the voice of reason in all this—the one person who might convince him otherwise. But Lawrence didn’t want to be talked down. “He won’t notice one vial missing,” he assured Linc. He had plenty of excuses he could give Magnus if necessary, but he wasn’t going to make Linc lie. “You can tell him the truth after I’ve talked to Elijah if you want.” By then, it would be too late. “Think of it this way: I’m doing everyone a favor giving Elijah the cure. No one wants an infected original vampire roaming around.” It was likely they were all on borrowed time already, just lucky they’d avoided Elijah so far. But Lawrence was about to walk into the lion’s den, hoping Magnus’s blood would be enough to keep him alive. LINCOLN CROWNE - wrap with yours?

If Lawrence looked like he could’ve taken a joke about this whole thing he’d have cackled ’I wonder why’, but he definitely didn’t look in a fit state for it now. One sharp word probably would’ve had him crying and then he’d have felt like a complete arsehole. They’d buried the hatchet in Aruba and if he could, he wanted to keep it that way. Lawrence’d had his heart broken and he knew exactly how it felt being on the receiving end of that.
The cracks in his own heart had healed up in the weeks following him patching things up with Cassie. Dragging himself into work every day helped, the forgiveness everyone had offered acting like a balm for a heart that still ached for what he’d done when he … well, when he hadn’t been himself. Instead of waiting for him to try and make things up to her, it looked like Penny had found herself a new bloke instead.
Linc managed a half smile at Lawrence, but it rapidly became a wince as he’d gone from ‘she hated me’ to telling him that Tobi had slipped right into his warm spot in Penny’s bed. He puffed out a breath, something tinged with humour at least. ”Yeah, he don’t seem the sort to draw the line at a coworker’s ex. Honestly, maybe that’s all she saw him as, some way to stop herself thinkin’ about you.” Maybe he was projecting feelings onto Lawrence’s ex that she wouldn’t have had, but he liked to think that if things ever went that bad with Cassie she wouldn’t possibly think about falling for someone else so quickly. Hate could turn to love pretty quick and denials swept in even faster when you felt like you were backed into a corner by your own emotions.
For Lawrence’s sake – to try and stop him making what felt like it might end up being the biggest mistake of his century long life – he tried talking his way around Penny’s feelings again. He hadn’t thought it would ever change when things had gotten shitty for him either. Hope had vanished like smoke on the air on the night he’d seen Wesley kill both of his parents. He’d imagined he’d end up the same way eventually – a husk, drained of blood, tossed out with the rubbish. Nobody to mourn him, nobody to care that he’d existed in the first place. Magnus had changed that, the hope he’d given him blooming until it had really taken hold with Cassie. Love didn’t care about the past, only who you were then and there, who you could be in the future with someone and getting an Original to drain every memory of the woman you loved out of your head was one hell of a way to kill it.
”Sometimes it takes a while,” he muttered, frowning. ”A long while.” And both of them had that. Linc pressed his lips together, his hands finding their way back to the edge of the bar. He kinda wanted to grip Lawrence by his shirt and shake him ‘til he tumbled out of whatever abyss of despair he’d fallen into, but this wasn’t his heart or his relationship on the line. Lawrence was making his own decision and it didn’t seem like anything he’d say now would change it.
Shifting his weight, he tried to convince himself that Lawrence was right and Magnus wouldn’t notice. His dad was smart though, quick to pick up on details like that. Maybe he’d understand when he told him he’d been doing it for a friend after, but more than likely he’d get that disappointed look on his face, that he hated. Linc finally nodded as Lawrence told him he could tell the truth after he’d made his deal with Elijah. ”Alright,” he puffed finally. ”I guess that’s the one good thin’ that’s gonna come out of this for sure. I hope this is gonna work out the way you want it to mate. Meet me here tomorrow mornin’, I’ll have it for you.” Anything that happened that they were both just gonna have to deal with. He hoped to hell Magnus understood when he found out that this was all about a bloke getting his heart broken.
