━ everybody be cool ━ December 16, 2023 KOSCHEI FROWNED AT CROWLEY AS THE crossroads demon rattled off about how they had to tighten things up and find more bloody souls. Koschei had to hold himself back from saying ‘I can get ‘em bloody for you, alright,’ mitigated to a simple smirk on the edges of his lips.
Sometimes he hated the fact that he was Crowley’s Right Hand Man. It came with the added task of placating this fucking guy, which, as a demon, was hard to stomach. He was also always flip-flopping back and fucking forth about what Koschei’s position was whenever it fucking suited him. Back when his wh-re mother was around, Koschei was barely a step above a fucking junkyard pitbull. Before that and now, though? He was the right hand again, tasked with listening to Crowley whine about Hell’s monarchy.
“I’m lookin’. Maybe not everyone’s obsessed with tradin’ their souls for their biggest desires anymore. Y’know, this new generation’s big into minimalism and all that.” He paused for a second and, before Crowley called him a fuckin’ idiot, Koschei chuckled, “Nah. Human’s ‘re the same as they’ll ever be. I’m workin’ on it.” He knew he’d get shit for not taking this seriously enough, but he was tired of hearin’ the same shit over and over again. Yeah, he got it, Crowley wanted back on top. That was fine. The only reason Koschei kept takin’ his shit is ‘cause he wanted those added benefits back, too━but Crowley was fucked if he thought Koschei was gonna keep lettin’ the Big Man jerk him around.
His phone buzzed in his pocket, and Koschei pulled it out, bristling somewhat at the unknown number. “We done here?” He asked, and, before Crowley could answer, Koschei gave a mocking salute and walked out, pressing the phone to his ear as he went.
“Yeah?” He growled and, hey, look at that, lil’ brother finally used his brain and got hold of some resources. Koschei didn’t like being beckoned like this━that was what he did to Damien, not the other way around━but he was kinda happy he could get outta that meeting. “Why would I come meet you anywhere?” Did Damien think Koschei owed him any fucking favours?
In the end, he showed up to the ‘meeting spot’ (which was just a dingy motel room in town) half an hour late. Koschei swung the door shut behind him and strode in, looking around with raised brows before Sonny’s green eyes landed on his brother. “What’s up, brother?” He asked with a smirk, “Is this where you’re staying, or is this typically an inappropriate spot to meet with your brother?” Did Reapers need sleep? He doubted it. But two men walking into a pay-by-the-hour spot like this looked a little… weird. The aforementioned New Generation may not have batted an eye, but this was a little town in Virginia, and Koschei was, well, old fashioned. Just like his host.

The scythe had made it all official. Before Elias had gone burying it in Death’s back (or had taken his head off, he hadn’t revealed exactly how he’d done it), the guy had just been a powerless blowhard. He could stand and whine that the job was being done badly, that his fellow reapers were associating with murderers, but it hadn’t been his place to do anything about it. Not until Elias had made it his place.
Damien grumbled under his breath as he fished his phone out of his pocket. Planning how to switch that balance of power to his own hands with Aurora had felt good, but it was also a pipe dream, the same way robbing banks had been when he’d pulled Sonny out of Connie’s room to tell him how they were gonna keep paying for her care. A couple of banks, that was all. Places that were insured and could afford to lose the money. He’d added it all up and knew how much they’d need for a lifetime of care at the facility. How was a little sketchier, same way it was with their plan for his succession to the throne, but they’d figure that out as they went. As long as Elias didn’t take the other matters into his own hands the same way.
Pulling Aurora close to kiss her goodbye, he’d reminded her again to keep watch for a giant blond dick. Elias would find more than he bargained for if he came for either her or Sonny, but he wouldn’t put it past him to try. Damien stood in his own living room, having bounced back home, pulling up the number for that thing in his brother. Fifty years ago he might’ve jumped at the idea of finding a weapon to kill the demon, especially if someone had told him there was a chance Sonny would survive. Times had changed though, hate had mellowed, bargains had been struck and Damien knew there was likely no way to save Sonny if the demon died. That meant Koschei needed to cool his fucking jets for a while.
”Hey,” Damien bit out. Hearing that ‘yeah?’ in Sonny’s ton pissed him off, they’d been brought up better than that. ”We need to talk, in person. Not at my place, the walls just…” Sprung ears. Nudging his glasses up out of the way, Damien pinched the bridge of his nose. Once upon a time he’d had infinite patience. ”Because shit’s coming our way again. You telling me you’ve got something better to do?” The predicted war between Lucifer and Crowley hadn’t exactly kicked off. That just seemed to leave room for all the other assholes to stir up trouble.
In the end they’d agreed on a motel – a step up for Koschei probably, and the sort of place that would likely leave Elias retching too hard to go poking around. Sat on the end of the bed, half an hour after he’d told Koschei to be there, his temper was brewing. Over the last fifty years he’d learned what made demons tick and the sort of games they played to get everybody else ticking like bombs on the brink of explosion. Even if this was for his own good, Koschei would keep him waiting. Damien let out a long breath as the door opened and closed, coldly eyeing the demon’s smirk. By now he’d learned how to diffuse his own temper, most of the time.
Like the ‘yeah’, the demon’s ‘brother’ pissed him off. He might’ve walked like Sonny, talked mostly like him, looked exactly like him still, but he wasn’t his brother. Damien’s mouth pinched in a thin line before he chuckled bitterly. ”I woulda asked you the same thing. What rock has Crowley got you living under these days?” Cowering while the rest of the town went to crap. ”I needed shitty,” he puffed finally.
Propping his forearms on his thighs, Damien stared up at Sonny. In life his brother had usually listened to him, with a demon in tow there was a good chance he’d do the opposite. ”When I said we had shit coming our way, what I meant was you do.” Brows hitching faintly, Damien shook his head. ”There’s been a change, a new boss. You can’t keep fucking around the way you were. Word’s come down from him, anybody who disturbs the natural order gets stopped.” Sarcasm dripped off his words. Elias didn’t have a clue what the natural order really was, he just wanted to impose his version of order on them all, even if it cost him his brother.

━ everybody be cool ━ KOSCHEI DIDN’T NEED A ‘ROCK,’ JUST LIKE Damien, but that wouldn’t be a fun answer, now would it? “No rocks. Might not be a cloud in the sky like you got, but it ain’t half bad.” He shrugged, creating the story smoothly and out of thin air. “Cloud in the sky? ‘Cause of Heaven? Get it?” Koschei’s chuckle rumbled through his chest, tapering off only when Damien continued.
Right. Trouble. What Damien thought was ‘trouble’ didn’t necessarily meet Koschei’s standards. He’d brought that same Great Depression-mentality his parents had bestowed on him━on them━to the future, but Koschei was old. He’d seen a hundred wars and depressions and they were all ‘great’ to the people in that time. Nothing was better than the lives they had now━the freedoms━and he had every intention of leaning into the hedonistic nature that came with what he was.
When Damien finally let it spill, Koschei tossed his head back and cackled. Just as he’d suspected, there wasn’t nothin’ to worry about. “New ‘boss?’ A new guy’s trottin’ around in Death’s shoes, spoutin’ orders, and you’re just bowin’ down, huh?” Was any of that really cause for concern? Koschei stuck his hands in his pockets and rocked back on his heels. “Tell your boss that it’s natural for a demon to wanna kill some people.” Still grinning like this was the most amusing thing he’d ever heard, Koschei stalked a few steps closer. “Wha’dya mean by ‘gets stopped?’” He asked, his voice becoming rougher, “What, he’s gonna mess with Hell to take me out?” There was some kinda code about that shit, wasn’t there? Death didn’t interfere with their issues?

Broken bodies and blood stains, the reek of sulphur in the air. Hunters converging on a spot on the map like fleas on an old dog’s back, just waiting to track down whatever was causing the mayhem. Dread had always filled the pit of his stomach as he’d arrive. Seeing his brother – or rather the thing wearing him – standing there in the middle of it all, just waiting for him to turn up had been a torment every single time. Even looking down at him now, Damien heard that slithering voice in the back of his head that whispered that he could solve the problem now. Drive the thing out of him and Sonny would finally be at peace. And he might end up standing there looking at the broken spirit that was all that was left of his big brother.
The smug son of a bitch was all he saw staring back at him as he looked up at him. If Sonny was there then he was buried deep tonight, and Koschei would probably only let him out for a little added torture to spice up what had been a shitty day already. ”You’re hilarious,” Damien said flatly. ”I spend just as much time in your neck of woods as I do up there, knee deep in the shit you guys create. Although, I guess you don’t get back there much these days. Hell’s still off limits, hmm?” If Crowley had finally managed to get the upper hand with Lucifer, news woulda spread already and Koschei might already have been in the wind.
Maybe running would end up being the best thing for the demon. Get Sonny out of dodge until things had calmed down. Sonny’s body had stopped being just a fragile flesh shell when that thing had slithered into his brother, wounds disappearing in an instant, but who knew if the virus could infect it the same way it could almost everybody else. Would anybody even notice if something that was already corrupted to the core got a little more violent and crazy? Probably not. Elias would undoubtedly have something to say about it though. His mouth’d pinch up, his eyes would get a little colder and he’d try laying down the law like he’d threatened to.
Damien’s shoulders started tightening beneath the black cloth of his suit. There were times it felt more like a straight jacket than something smart and presentable (as though bank robbers needed that touch of class to prove they weren’t just thugs). ”Bowing down, like you’d be doing anything differently if you had Death’s scythe to your neck,” he puffed. ”He didn’t just slip into the big guy’s loafers when he happened to be taking a nap. He killed Death to take his place.” That’d given him just enough pause that he hadn’t tried snatching the scythe from Elias’ hands and burying it in his smug face. He’d taken the job in the first place to try and save his brother, but now he had more than what was left of Sonny to lose. He had Aurora, he couldn’t be torn away from the woman he loved because the demon refused to listen.
Puffing out a breath, Damien got to his feet. There wouldn’t be a second chance with Elias. One screw up and that was likely to be it. ”I don’t think he’d go questioning that. His problem is that someone connected to me wants to kill some people. He sees me standing around debating with you about what the Hell you’ve done here and that stink starts rubbing off on me.” He jabbed a thumb at his chest, alright feeling it growing tight as though he actually needed to breathe. Snorting, Damien eyed his brother, catching an edge to his voice that didn’t seem like it was just Sonny’s. ”I didn’t say he was smart. How many things do you know would go taking on Death himself? You think Crowley’s gonna come whining to Death about his lap dog getting killed?” He would though. Damien knew it would be one of the worst fucking moves he’d ever make, but he wouldn’t be able to just let it go when his brother died because this jackass had decided to mouth off to the wrong thing.

━ everybody be cool ━ “I DUNNO, I’D AT LEAST MAKE IT LOOK COOL, y’know?” Koschei lifted his brows and grinned smugly. “Or put up a fight. I bet you gave in the minute you saw him.” Koschei mocked, and a few moments later, he was a little closer to his baby brother, asking just how much he’d actually agreed to. Or how hellbent (ha) the new Death was on his mission. Koschei was kiiiinda sick of all these people tryin’ to shut him and his (well, Crowley’s) operation down, it wasn’t cool and it was extremely fuckin’ annoying.
“Hmmm, so he doesn’t know that you’re in on it.” Koschei’s smile spread slowly, but it was large and mischievous within a few seconds. He rocked back on his heels again, still beaming like this was the funniest shit he’d come across today.
“Can’t be that stupid if he took on Death and won.” He hummed, almost as if saying it to himself. Koschei shrugged, “Lap dog? Nah. Right-hand-man? Yeah, I think he’d have somethin’ to say. ‘Specially when he’s back in charge.” And Koschei was very much behind his horse winnin’ this race. “What about you, huh?” He lifted his eyebrows for a second, still smirking. “You’d stick up for me, wouldn’t ya? Sold your soul to that guy just so you could stick ‘round and look after your brother. Gonna let that all go just ‘cause some new Boss Man told ya so?” He leaned in a little, emphasizing his interrogation in an almost joking fashion.

Damien snorted through his nose, but the asshole’s words had irritated him all the same. Like Poison Ivy, creeping up on you til you wanted to tear your skin off to get rid of that itch. Maybe the demon would’ve made it all look good for a few seconds, but no amount of charm or arrogance would stop Elias’ scythe from carving its way through Sonny’s neck. The thing in him wouldn’t give a shit then. It’d probably just send him straight back to Hell and in a month or two he’d be back out, looking for another sap to invade. It sure as fuck wouldn’t matter to him that he’d rolled over and taken it to protect both of them. Family was everything and right now Elias’ beady eyes were set firmly on his. Like he had with Elias, Damien kept his damn mouth shut. His lips settled into a thin line that only broke as he barked out a laugh. ”In on it? You’re cracked.” He brought a hand up like he’d shove Koschei on his damn ass while he stood that puffing his chest out and rocking back on his heels like he was a fucking God instead of some Godless soul that had crawled out of the depths of Hell to make his life a misery. He hadn’t been out here lending Hell a hand in making everybody else’s life a nightmare, it had been about Sonny and this dumb son of a bitch knew it. ”Being able to stab a guy in the back makes you lucky, not smart,” Damien muttered, shaking his head. ”Death probably saw what I did. A choir boy who’d never step out of line.” Elias had fooled all of them. He’d do it again without blinking, cleaning up his reapers’ distractions to make sure everything ticked along just how he wanted it to. Take out Crowley, get Hell working the way Lucifer meant it to and everything else would probably fall into place. The asshole could stomp his way around Death’s library all he wanted, it wasn’t gonna stop him from trying to stand in the way of his plans.
Making a low sound of agreement in his throat, Damien chuckled. The demon had delusions of grandeur if he didn’t see that Crowley would toss him right under the bus if he needed to. ”There’s no guarantee he’ll get back there. Til he does you’re just twiddling your thumbs out here, trying to keep yourself entertained. You need to stop that shit.” Not that he thought the demon actually would. He’d been playing games for decades, using Sonny as his puppet.
Tension bunched the muscles of Damien’s jaw. He took a step back, ignoring the smirk that was still painted all over his brother’s face. All he’d done since he’d been a kid was try and protect Sonny. Death had stopped him from being there watching his brother’s back all the time, but he wasn’t gonna let Elias try and take him down now. ”You think I’d ever have made a deal with a piece of shit like you if I didn’t plan on always looking after him?” he muttered. Taking another step back, Damien pushed his glasses up his nose, then eyed the demon through them. ”Just do what I asked for once. Don’t take chances, don’t get in over your head. Don’t get my brother killed.” Again. The word lodged in his throat as he strode towards the door. Koschei was likely to toss aside everything he’d asked of him the second he disappeared, but he’d given his warnings all the same. If the demon was smart, he’d listen to them for once. Not slowing down, Damien vanished just as he was about to walk through the door, appearing back at his apartment, already feeling the tension in his chest release as he heard Aurora in the next room.
