Hector didn’t say anything to Linc but it felt like the days were dragging by very slowly. The only thing keeping him hopeful was that Magnus and Cassie were working on a cure. Something like that could take months, but he had faith the young witch would pull them out soon, itching to be reunited with her boyfriend, probably for reasons which would make Magnus’ toes curl. They weren’t doing anything Magnus hadn’t done a thousand times over. Hector had stories about Magnus which would make Linc’s toes curl. Stories he would take to his grave, knowing the favour was returned. Being stuck in the ghost town with Linc wasn’t that bad though, but it was the longest he’d spent with just one person. Before being thrown into the stone they had barely spent ten minutes alone together. Now they were spending every single day together, which meant conversations varied from the normal ones to the deep ones. They spoke about their parents, Cassie, Magnus and even Evelyn. He shared things with Linc that he probably wouldn’t have done back in reality, but he trusted Linc not to broadcast things to all the staff. Even though he promised he would never do anything to hurt Linc, Hector may snap his neck if he started sharing Hector’s secrets. There were even moments where Hector was giving Linc guidance on topics he wasn’t comfortable enough to discuss with Magnus. There are some things you just don’t discuss with your parents. Sex for example. He also tried to help Linc feel better about attacking Cassie. If someone as old as Hector couldn’t fight off the virus then neither could Linc. Hector was keen to try and keep them as busy as possible, finding things to keep Linc’s mind off everything. He tried to teach Linc some Italian, which was hard work. Then he tried to teach Linc piano, which was even harder. It turned out Hector wasn’t very good at teaching, but still they pushed on. The only thing Linc appeared to be enjoying in their little prison world was the fact he was human, whereas Hector was missing being a vampire. He missed being able to drink a bottle of wine without feeling wasted, slurring his words by the last sip. This time Hector did hear the front door open and someone step inside. Linc was standing alongside him in the kitchen, so it wasn’t him. The pair of them rushed into the living to find Magnus standing there. They had a potential cure, which they were trying on Hector first. Magnus’ blood was being injected into his body. Cassie would be bringing Hector out of the stone shortly, but he was to be on his best behaviour. No trying to rip people’s hearts out. There was no time for Hector to embrace Magnus and apologise for everything. Magnus disappeared out of the living room leaving just Linc and Hector. “If all goes well I’ll see you out there, okay?” He then did something he would never have done a few months ago and hugged Linc, but suddenly he no longer felt his arms around Linc’s body. Hector’s eyes flickered open, his hands were chained down to a table. Magnus and Cassie were standing over him. “Most people take me on a date first before chaining me up.” He commented in a soft voice, as he started to tug harshly at the chains, trying to break free. Immediately the effects of the virus hit him like a train and he was overcome with anger. He screwed his right hand up into a tight fist, taking a quick deep breath before yanking his hand violently from the cuff with an audibly crack of the bone in his wrist. In a blur he swung his hand at Cassie, trying to grab hold of her hair to drag her neck close to his mouth. Not only was he angry, but bloody starving. MAGNUS DAYNE

━ evil notions come free ━ ULTIMATELY, CASSIE HAD FIGURED OUT WHAT they needed to do. Well, she had a theory, anyway. Or perhaps it was Lawrence, as he’d supplied the books that led to the potential cure. Johanna had helped, too, as she’d discovered a narrower space to search━which had brought them here. Magnus, apparently, was the cure. Or so Cassie said━he couldn’t understand the scrawls in those grimoires. Perhaps they were spelled so someone like him couldn’t read them, or perhaps it was something that came with being a witch. Either way, he’d held down the fort at Hector’s business while the witch did her thing. And after working so closely with her these past few weeks, he found that━much to his dismay━she wasn’t so bad. He understood what Linc saw in her━more than just her youth and bright personality. Past that, Cassie was good, and perhaps that was why she’d won the hearts of many of the men he respected.
The basement that’d served as Linc’s confinement in the days during which he’d descended into madness was converted into a workspace of sorts. A table was set up, Linc’s body laid down respectfully━but out of view━and Hector was on the surface. Chained to the surface. It was steel, and it all looked… sanitary. Medical, almost. Magnus didn’t like the look of it.
Cassie drew his blood into three syringes, then sent Magnus into the stone. This was just a test, of course, and he knew that Hector would be strong enough to withstand it. If it didn’t work, he didn’t want Linc to have to deal with going back and forth.
Magnus appeared in whatever realm they’d been sent to. A quiet little town, empty and hazy, almost like a dream. He ended up just inside the fence of a particular house, and decided this was the right place to go. Magnus slipped through the door, feeling odd that his strength had changed, and so had his senses. And he was riddled with nerves.
He could’ve cried when he saw them. Hector and his son, stuck living together there, but they were healthy, and it looked like they hadn’t grown tired of each other yet. Magnus smiled, though his eyes had a hint of sadness in them. “It’s good seein’ ya both.” He said lightly, but he knew if he said any more, he’d break. Magnus cleared his throat, wishing he could embrace Linc, but that would all come later. “I only ‘ave a moment. We think we’ve found a cure. Maybe somethin’ like it. Cassie will bring you out first,” His eyes found Hector’s. “You’ll be secure, but try yer best t’fight it. She thinks my blood’ll ‘eal ya.” He nodded firmly at Hector, getting a little misty-eyed as he nodded again at Linc. Magnus flashed him another sad smile, and then he was gone.
He stood as he returned, cleared his throat, then looked at Cassie. She searched his face for a second before looking away, and he was grateful for it. Magnus shifted to lean over the table, lifting one of the needles filled with his blood. “Bring ‘im back.” He said, and Cassie did, then whispered in Latin as she placed the stone in the centre of Hector’s chest. She likely didn’t understand exactly what she was saying, but Magnus did━every time she spoke, he was reminded of home. It was an apt memory while bringing Hector back.
Magnus realized quickly that Hector wasn’t fighting this━perhaps he couldn’t. His hand tightened around the needle, but Hector managed to break his own wrist to free himself of one chain. Magnus moved quicker than Cassie, shoving her away from Hector’s grasp as she yelped. As he peeled back, he snatched Hector’s broken wrist and slammed it back onto the table. Not wasting any more time, he shoved the needle into Hector’s neck and pressed the plunger with his thumb, dispensing his blood into his friend.
Magnus couldn’t see why he would be the cure. It didn’t make sense. He’d been terrible at many points in his life, committing awful deeds that he could barely stomach even hundreds of years later. All he wanted was to be a father, but he’d screwed that up both times he’d tried. Linc told him what he really thought of him, and while Magnus didn’t want to believe it━knowing the virus was affecting Linc’s entire being━some of seeped through. What if it was true? And if it was, why the hell would his blood be the thing that cured his son? Not only did Magnus not deserve it, but he wasn’t good enough for it.
Hector was his best friend because they were both immortal. They understood each other. They came from the same time. But Magnus was going to lose him today, because that seemed like the only thing Magnus was worthy of.
But he stared into Hector’s eyes anyway, watching desperately for any sign that it was working. That his loved ones would return to him━because he may not have deserved it, but it didn’t mean he would give up hope.

As soon as he became aware of his surroundings he knew he was in Magnus’ basement. When Hector first visited the property he made a few comments about the basement. The first couple made Magnus’ eyes roll into the back of his head. However it was the perfect place to keep someone captive, but when the hell would Magnus ever need that? Well, that day was upon them and Hector and Linc were the ones being held captive. The promise to be on his best behaviour held no weight. Inside the stone it was easy to say he would fight the virus, but he’d forgotten how much control it had over him. For a few seconds he tried to fight it, but lost the battle immediately as he launched for Cassie. He’d almost managed to grab hold of her, his eyes darkening for a moment, but Magnus was quicker. Hector gritted his teeth in pain as Magnus slammed his wrist back down onto the table. There was no time to retaliate. He felt a sharp pain in the side of his neck as the needle broke his skin. Seconds later his body relaxed as every single muscle in his body untensed. He closed his eyes for a moment. The mist of anger started to lift as he began to feel normal. The violent thoughts disappeared from his mind and he didn’t feel the need to kill Magnus or Cassie. “I feel… okay.” He spoke as his eyes opened again, looking up at Magnus, “I think it could have worked.” There were so many questions he had about why Magnus’ blood was the cure. It didn’t make any sense, but for now it didn’t matter. All that mattered was it worked. He broke into a small smile, holding back the tears. He wasn’t crying for himself, but for Magnus. The man had spent months without his best friend and son by his side and now they could all finally be reunited. If he could, he would have peeled himself away from the table and embraced Magnus. “Please let go of my wrist. It bloody hurts.” He laughed softly. Once Magnus let go of him Hector brought his hand over to his one that was still chained down, cracking the bone back into place. “Shall we bring Linc out? Don’t want him in there for too long on his own.” He knew Linc would start panicking soon if nothing happened, terrified he’d been left in the stone completely alone. Not that Magnus, Cassie or even Hector would do that to him. There were so many things he was desperate to say to Magnus. It would mainly be sentences filled with ‘thank you’ and ‘sorry’ with the occasional ‘love you’. He was keeping everything reeled in for now though because it was time to save Linc. MAGNUS DAYNE

━ evil notions come free ━ WHILE MAGNUS WAS MENTALLY PREPARING himself for the worst━accepting the fact that there would perhaps be no salvation for his loved ones━he was still eternally grateful as understanding began to flood into Hector’s eyes again. Sanity. His body relaxed, and Magnus froze, watching him closely.
… Until Hector spoke, and it was clear that it had worked.
Magnus choked out a laugh, releasing Hector once the man asked him━only remembering then that he was still holding him. Cassie waved her hand over the remaining shackle and it opened, and Magnus hauled Hector off the table, getting him to his feet. It didn’t matter if he might be a little disoriented or wobbly━he wouldn’t be unsteady with the way that Magnus squeezed the other man into his arms. He was okay. He was alive. And they knew it worked, so it was time to save Linc.
“‘Course,” Magnus chuckled wetly, patting Hector’s back. He waited a few more moments━savouring the hug━before finally pulling away.
Within minutes, they had Linc on the table again, with Cassie pushing him back into his body. Magnus repeated the same process, stabbing Linc through the neck with the syringe, then depositing his blood into the boy. Within seconds, it worked the same way it had with Hector.
Magnus leaned down, cradling Linc’s head as he pressed his lips, then his cheek, to the boy’s hair. “Yer okay,” He whispered, “Yer alright now, Linc. It’s all over.” And he didn’t have to feel bad for anything he’d done, especially because Magnus wasn’t holding any of it against him.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ WELL… THAT COULD’VE GONE BETTER. IT was okay in the end, obviously, but she could’ve done without Hector grabbing her like he was gonna take a chunk outta her. She was thankful Magnus was there to shove her out of the way━out of Hector’s reach while he stuck the needle in him.
And it worked.
Hope blossomed in her expression as Magnus helped Hector from the table, beaming brightly as she realized that this meant they could get Linc back, too. That her theory was right. All the research she’d put into this━and everyone else’s help, too, obvi━had paid off, and now she was gonna get her boyfriend back… and hopefully she’d impressed said-boyfriend’s dad enough that he’d at least forgive her for falling asleep here on Linc’s birthday.
But, obviously, her main concern was getting them both back in one piece. While Magnus moved Linc’s body to the table, Cassie rounded the back of it and went to Hector, gently guiding him to the nearby chair. She grabbed a blood bag from the side table and handed it to him, then smiled warmly, “Welcome back,” Cassie said lightly, and even though she was happy that he was back, the sombre tone wasn’t completely gone from her voice. She suspected it wouldn’t be from Magnus’, either. Someone was still missing.
Cassie reeled in her flinch when she saw Linc’s body on the table. It’d been so long since she’d seen him, but the last time, he’d pretended to be happy for, like, a second before he tried to bite her. And she didn’t hold it against him, of course, ‘cause wouldn’t have done it if he wasn’t sick. Cassie knew that. He looked kinda peaceful this way, almost like he could be sleeping, and she frowned lightly as she magically closed the cuffs around his wrists without looking away from his face.
The stone was laid on his chest, then she began her spell, and, within moments, Linc was back in his body. Instead of tearing herself away like she’d done with Hector, she grabbed one of his hands and squeezed it. He might not care right now━might just wanna tear her throat out━but Cassie felt like it would still matter.
And she kept holding his hand while Magnus injected him, and stayed holding it even when Magnus was welcoming him back. She unlatched his restraints without moving, and, finally, Magnus pulled away enough and gave her a small smile and a curt nod. That was the closest she was gonna get to his approval━or respect━and she was gonna take it.
Once Linc was free, though, Cassie was beaming down at him. “You’re back,” She croaked like she couldn’t believe it and bent to press her lips to his, lifting her free hand to cup his cheek. “I missed you.” Cassie whispered, knowing she’d said the same thing the last time she saw him, but she hoped the reaction would be better this time. She knew it would be. So long as he wasn’t blaming himself for everything that happened.
“Nobody’s mad at you,” Cassie added, just ‘cause it felt like the reassurance he needed. “We’re just happy you’re back. I’m really happy.” And she kissed him again, ‘cause she could━‘cause sometimes she still thought about that phone call they had before he went into the stone and then chided herself for it because it felt, like, bad. But mostly ‘cause she just missed him.

Each morning when he’d woken up to find himself still here, Linc had felt his hope die a little more. Hector tried to keep him going, but it was hard staying positive when you’d lived through years of captivity before, only finding an escape by dying and being reborn into something inhuman. He tried reminding himself that it had been Magnus who’d saved him the last time, that his dad would do everything possible to save the two people who meant the most to him, but the days stretched out, the months, or years ahead feeling grim.
In Magnus’ place Hector slipped into the role of being his father, or rather Uncle Hector. The title never would’ve stuck before, Hector wouldn’t have allowed it. He’d been his boss, Magnus’ best mate, the bloke who’d paid out ridiculous amounts of money to take them all over to London on a Jolly, and who he’d had to drag out of a pub that’d been practically dry by him and Magnus. Hector had already slowly been losing his intimidating God status, but it’d crumbled entirely in a place where they’d gone back to being just human. The story of what had happened before he’d been stabbed by Magnus and so many of what life had been like beforehand had slowly spilled out. Talking to Magnus about Cassie, about what they’d done together, would’ve been mortifying, especially since Magnus probably would’ve barred her from the house permanently, but somehow it was different with Hector. In return Hector had spilled his own guts. What was said in this weird little pocket world stayed here – if he wanted to avoid a snapped neck.
That morning he’d cooked pancakes, giving Hector another cooking lesson, which went miles better than Hector teaching him Italian, or how to play the piano. He’d set the plate down in front of Hector with an only half butchered bon appetite. Now they were back in there, a grilled cheese sizzling in the pan. The pancakes had been Mrs Graham’s recipe, just like the butterfly cakes he’d whipped up last week, the grilled cheese was all Jo. He had apologies to make to her as well, the third in a queue that felt a million miles long. ”Grab the plates,” he told Hector, not feeling half as shy about giving him orders now. Before Hector could the front door opened and closed. Hope rushed through him, leaving his heart sizzling the same way the sandwich did.
”Dad!” The word creaked out a throat that threatened to close up. He’d fumbled the cooker off, a good thing since he didn’t end up going back in there again. They were getting out of here, maybe. He could’ve cried when Magnus told them there was a possible cure. They’d bring Hector out first, testing it on him to make sure it was safe to give the baby vampire (the weak one who might not survive it if there were some brutal side effects). Pressing his lips together, Linc watched Magnus disappear again. He hugged Hector hard, his heart thumping away in his chest as the panic started to rear its ugly head. It was alright, he could do this, he could be in here on his own for the few hours it might seem like. Then Hector was gone and he wasn’t so sure of that at all.
The grilled cheese had stuck in his throat, but he’d eaten it anyway, figuring it was his last chance to have it taste like that and then he’d settled down to wait, trying not to count the minutes until he …
Even knowing it was coming, Linc wasn’t quite prepared to blink and find himself out of the world he’d spent the last couple of months trapped in. His eyes opened again and he was on a cold metal table, staring up at the ceiling of the prison he’d been in before that one. Panic cut in, his body bucking on the table as the anger started to well in him again. Thank fuck Magnus was fast, jamming the needle into his neck before he could say more that he couldn’t entirely take back, before he could hurt either one of them. Like a tidal wave, whatever had been in the needle rushed through his system, pushing the rage out ahead of it. With tears burning in his eyes, Linc sagged back against the table, clutching at the hand that was holding onto his.
Magnus was there, still cradling his head. His lips touched his cheek, then his hair, stemming the tears that wanted to rush through him. If he could’ve pulled a hand free, he would’ve lifted it to hold onto his dad. ”I’m sorry,” he panted, turning his head to look up into Magnus’ eyes. ”I’m so sorry.” The virus might’ve been gone, but the scars it had left weren’t gonna fade for a while, even with his dad’s reassurances.
After a moment the cuffs were clicking open and he could reach up to hug Magnus one armed like he’d wanted to, holding onto the man who’d become the bed rock in his life. He sniffed in a breath as Magnus pulled away, finally taking in Cassie as she stepped up beside him. One corner of his mouth lifted up into a smile tinged with sadness. Cassie leaned down to meet him before he could sit up, pressing her lips to his, her hand cupping his cheek. ”You brought me back,” he breathed, knowing he’d never be able to thank either of them enough for saving him. ”I missed you too, every minute I was there.”
He cupped the back of her neck lightly, his touch a hundred times gentler than it’d been when he’d last seen her. Linc studied her face, looking for some sign that he’d physically hurt her, but there was nothing there. The tears prickled at the back of his eyes as Cassie promised him that they weren’t mad. It felt like they should’ve been. He’d killed a woman and he’d done everything possible to hurt the two of them, but somehow, despite it all, they still loved him. ”Thank you,” he puffed. ”Thanks for saving me after everything I did. I’m so happy I could cry. I know I’ve got so much to make up for.” Because of Cassie and Magnus he could do that now. He wrapped his other arm around her, kissing her like a choking man getting his first clear gasp of air, and maybe that was what Cassie was to him. The air he breathed, and now he was back he could do it over and over.
