The rugs probably weren’t worth much as it was, the pair of them had come from a sprawling antique shop in Long Island as part of a job lot, but Nicky rolled them up anyway. He stacked them in the corner of the living room beside the sofa that he shoved aside. It might’ve been wise to shift anything flammable out of the room entirely given that fire seemed to be the element Mandy naturally reached for. She’d have scowled about it, but he could see Darce in her. Fierce when she had to be, not afraid to fight back, even against the Original Hybrid himself.
Nicky’s brows drew together as he glanced out of the large window that took up most of one wall of the living room. Somewhere out there on the edges of town, Klaus Mikaelson had probably finished licking his wounds. He’d have his people putting the finishing touches on patching up the house that him and Darce had taken some chunks out of in rescuing their little sister and Maeve. He imagined once that was done those beady little eyes would land back on them. Maybe he’d come swinging through the front door of the shop again, but it’d be more than an innocent young witch waiting for him this time. Between the two of them him and Darce would attempt to tear him to bits. Rumour had it that he was impervious to almost every weapon out there, but they wouldn’t have been the Reid brothers if they didn’t at least fight tooth and nail to protect their own.
A handful of years older than him, Darce had come into his magic first. By the time his own made an appearance he had himself two teachers. Whatever his dad took him through he’d end up practising with Darcey. They’d probably reduced more than one thing in the shop to rubble while they’d been doing it, but their parents had never put up much of a fuss about it. The important part was making sure he could take care of himself, that he could actually use what was in their veins instead of just performing parlour tricks with it.
With all the furniture cleared from the centre of the living room they’d hopefully not do too much damage this time. Nicky rolled his sleeves up, frowning around the space as though there might’ve been something he’d forgotten. He’d never intended to have to go through all of this with Mandy, but after what had happened, he needed to know she could protect herself with the magic they’d busted out of that little toy Klaus had trapped it in. The same worry threaded through his gut about Maeve, but she was older, she’d had more time to learn before that son of a bitch had got the jump on her. Somehow he doubted suggesting some practice would go down the same with her. He checked in with her most days, wondering, somewhat gloomily, when she’d make that decision to go back to her family. She’d be safe there, albeit on the other side of the world.
The sound of the apartment door opening drew him out of his thoughts. Nicky cleared his throat, offering Mandy a half smile as she walked in. ”Hiya. Wasn’t sure if you’d actually turn up.” Amusement tugged at his mouth. When her brothers fussed the stubbornness that was mirrored in the two of them only seemed to grow. If she wasn’t intending on joining the family business when she was done with school then she’d have made a good lawyer with that ability to argue. ”You gotta go back this evenin’?” Poking too far into her schedule had just felt like it would kick another argument off, but if there was a chance at a family dinner later, he wasn’t gonna go turning his nose up at it.
