News of the virus was slowly making its way through the vampire community. Soon the news would reach Tristan and she’d be forced to pack up and leave Mystic Falls, but she had a boyfriend who could travel anywhere in the world. So even though Tristan would be under the impression he was dragging Aurora away from her man, he wasn’t. He could try his best to put up obstacles for the couple, but would fail every time. This time she was prepared to fight her brother on this. Damien was her last shot at happiness. It was something she deserved. Aurora was now more cautious when leaving her apartment, keeping her eye out for vampires who looked a little unnatural. There was no sign of Hector though. There were whispers that he had been consumed by the virus. It was the perfect opportunity for her to finally take Hector down, but it wasn’t her battle to fight. Tristan wouldn’t be thankful either, his little sister fighting his battles for him. Damien was desperate to move them both away from Mystic Falls. Away from Tristan and away from this virus, but Aurora was adamant it was a bad idea. She’d already spent a hundred years of her life running from Mikael. She wasn’t prepared to spend another hundred years running from her brother, constantly looking over her shoulder, waiting for him or one of his servants to find her. They were safe in Mystic Falls. For now. Aurora was sitting on Damien’s couch flicking through her phone. Neither of them could have eyes in the back of their heads, so Aurora had decided to purchase something called a ring doorbell off the internet. It was a way to monitor who was coming to her apartment, especially when she was at Damien’s. Hopefully the ancient vampires wouldn’t clock on that there was a little device filming them. The same went for a brother. They all fell into a category where technology was mind boggling to them. She couldn’t believe she was able to watch the goings on outside of her apartment door from the device in her hand, except she had no idea how to set the app up on her phone. Her boyfriend scent drifted through into the living room, indicating he had appeared somewhere in the apartment. “Good morning darling.” She called out from where she was sitting, her eyes lighting up when Damien entered the room, “I have been trying to figure out this bloody phone application business for half an hour. It is telling me to sign in, but sign into what?” Sometimes she forgot that Damien came from a time where technology wasn’t popular either, but he seemed to know a lot more than her when it came to things like this. “How was your work meeting? Did you get a payrise?” She teased with a smile on her face. DAMIEN BECK

That dumb son of a bitch. Short sighted, opinionated, fucking preaching about how incompetent the previous Death had been. As though competence only came via an inability to let go of the rule book and was channelled through the stick up your ass. Damien’s mind crawled with his irritation over it as he vanished from Elias’ new digs. His fingers curled into fists, his palms itching with the need to grab the scythe and bury it in his smug face. Someone would sooner or later, even Leah was gonna get tired of the preaching sooner or later.
His phone was in his hand as soon as he landed out in the woods where he’d taken to meeting Sonny most of the time. Even that hadn’t seemed far enough from the prying eyes in town, now it was worse. If Elias was serious about making sure none of them were fucking up his little plan to clean up this town there was a chance he’d have him followed just to make sure they were all being good little reapers and sleeping cuddled up to the rule book at night. Damien thumbed through a call to his brother – or rather the demon in him – cursing as it went unanswered. After decades of trying to track down that thing he wasn’t walking away now. Elias could see collusion in it, but it was nothing more than family watching out for family. What he had left of it at least.
Aurora.
The phone disappeared, the hand that had been holding it coming up to pinch at the bridge of his nose. He’d been trying to protect him from whatever was going on in this town for months. The virus had been boiling away under the surface, slowly spreading, pushing him towards snapping and just scooping Aurora up out of town. Maybe her brother would never quit looking, but what was the alternative? Sitting on his hands until someone finally managed to infect her? Naw. He couldn’t sit there and watch the Aurora he loved twisting into something dark, something heartless and cruel. There was no way in the world he could lose her.
Elias had pushed for them to be the ones out there scooping up the infected, corralling them until they either tore each other apart or someone actually found a cure. That meant they were the ones going home with this thing clinging to them. They might not be able to catch it – although he was sure Cory would remain convinced that he could, scrubbing his hands raw like that would get rid of it – but nobody knew if they could be carriers or not. All of a sudden the job didn’t seem worth it. Elias would probably come after him wherever they went, but he’d live with that target on his back as long as he had Aurora.
Planning on ignoring Elias’ orders for now at least to focus on the fresh shadow that had been cast on his life by the change of leadership, Damien headed for home. The second he appeared in his bedroom, he was aware that Aurora was there. It wasn’t just the scent of her, it was like the air itself changed when she was close. ”Morning,” Damien murmured, sighing heavily as he walked into the living room, dumping his jacket over the back of the sofa. He bent, wrapping an arm around Aurora’s shoulders and pressing his lips to the top of her head. The situation in Mystic Falls might’ve grown tenuous, his temper still prickling from what Elias had dared to do, but with her here it all felt a little further away.
His eyes narrowed behind the lenses of his glasses as he squinted down at the phone in her hands. He was gonna be pressuring her again soon, but for the moment he pushed it aside. ”What application? What’ve you been doing?” It was probably something to keep her brother at bay, although Tristan never seemed to pay attention to that.
Letting go of her Damien rounded the couch and dropped down wearily beside her. A tired laugh rolled out of him. He nudged his glasses out of the way with his knuckles and ground his thumb and forefinger into his eyes. ”If only. A few bucks per soul might make it a little more tolerable.” It might’ve fostered a better work ethic in Leah too, she could pay for her own drinks then. ”I know I’ve been saying it non-stop lately, but there’s trouble coming. The new boss was giving out orders. We’re meant to clear up after the virus has done its thing, and apparently we’re meant to be trying to stick our noses into another problem too. Have you heard anything about people vanishing in town? Snatched up by the Wild Hunt?” Knowing her brother, he already had a handle on the whole thing with the help of his vampire brain trust, but he’d rather bow to Elias than he would go to Tristan and ask him for information.

To an outsider's perspective Damien and Aurora’s relationship had its obstacles, ones that some people would refuse to navigate. For starters they couldn’t be seen together in Mystic Falls. They were forced to keep their affection to one another behind closed doors. Secondly, Damien was constantly being dragged away from her due to his work commitments. He didn’t have a job he could quit either. If he walked away from his responsibilities there was a chance he’d die. His sole reason for existing on earth was to reap souls, not to fall in love with a vampire and have his happily ever after with her. These were minor things to Aurora though. She didn’t care she couldn't walk down the sidewalk holding Damien’s hand. For every job he went to attend he was back with her in no time, unless he had a particular difficult soul. She would patiently await his return though. These things weren’t obstacles for her. It was just a part of their relationship. A slight frown formed on her face as Damien greeted her with a sigh. An indication the meeting didn’t go that well. Credit to him though, listening to someone giving him orders, telling him how to do his job. Aurora wouldn’t last two seconds as a reaper. She would defy Death her first day on the job, just how she often did to her father as a child. He would tell her she wasn’t allowed in the kitchen, but every day she would sneak down there. She smiled softly as he drew closer, placing a kiss on her head. She was in two minds about finding the head office for this ring doorbell business and demanding they make the installation process a lot easier. Not everyone knew their way around the latest iPhone. There were instructions, but they might as well have been written in Arabic. None of it made sense to her. If she was left alone for another hour with the thing she’d probably march around to her apartment and rip the bloody thing off the wall. Needlessly to say her patience was paper thin with technology. “The doorbell I purchased off that website last week. The Amazon? Anyway, I cannot figure out their application they have told me to download.” She gestured to the instructions which lay on the couch next to her. Aurora pushed the instructions aside as Damien sat down next to her. He was looking a little defeated. He went on to explain about the trouble which was brewing in Mystic Falls. The virus was making the rounds, thankfully it hadn’t infected her nor her brother. Although, it may have been difficult to tell the difference between normal Tristan and virus ridden Tristan. She turned her body to face Damien, another frown on her fact, except this one was deeper than before. “No, but I would not know even if someone had been taken. Is the Wild Hunt here? In Mystic Falls?” That stirred more concern in her than the virus because she’d heard plenty of stories about the Wild Hunt, “They can wipe out entire towns, leaving behind not a single memory of the people they have taken.” It was just another thing she wasn’t immune to. Now they were dodgy infected supernaturals and avoiding thunderstorms. DAMIEN BECK

Reaping had been a means to an end from the moment he’d begged Death to hire him – stay alive long enough to track down that evil asshole that had stolen his brother. It had probably made the search for Sonny stretch out longer than it would’ve done if he hadn’t died on that bank floor, but it had given him the ability to take that chase worldwide. The demon had gotten his kicks out of it, dragging it out as long as possible before he’d let himself be caught. After that it had become like his first bank job, endless shifts of talking souls into going with him, the call coming at any time of day. The leash Death had slipped around his neck feeling heavier before Elias had finally yanked it tight with his dumb ass move. If he thought he could’ve gotten away with ripping it off finally, he’d do it, looping it around Elias neck and hopefully choking the son of a bitch on it.
A life on the other side of the planet with Aurora had been sounded better and better, with this latest change the impetus that might’ve just made the decision for him. Let someone else gather up the infected like sick cattle. Elias had acted like he wanted to do something to put all the deaths back in balance, but he would’ve put money on most of it being bullshit. Damien imagined if it was Aurora, God forbid, infected, Elias would just turn his back and call it nature getting rid of the trash. If it happened he’d tear him apart with that scythe. They’d be finding bits of him all over Mystic Falls for decades.
Almost all he wanted to protect in the world was waiting right here for him in his apartment. Some of his melting away, like the walls here shielded them from the shit storm that was raging outside. ”Why would you need to fill in an application for a doorbell?” Damien asked, confused about how it all fitted in. When he was a kid their doorbell had been the old fashioned kind, an actual bell sat in the hallway, probably as old as the house itself had been. Now everything was about technology, a constant race run to keep up with it all.
His gaze raked over the instructions as he sat down next to Aurora. He’d figure it out for her later, even if it meant spending half the evening bent over the sheets of instructions. Dropping his hand away from his eyes, Damien reached out to take Aurora’s hand as she turned herself towards him. ”Supposedly,” Damien muttered. ”Apparently we’re immune to that and the virus, but I don’t know if I trust that bullshit enough to go digging around it.” No matter what happens, baby, I won’t forget you. The promise wrapped itself around his throat, holding the words back. He’d given up his apple pie suburban life to try and bring Connie out of her coma, he’d given up a peaceful afterlife to try and get Sonny back. He’d give everything he had left for Aurora.
Damien’s dark brows furrowed deeper as Aurora gave him an absolute worst case scenario. There wasn’t any damn way they could get everybody out of wherever they were being kept if that happened. Elias could talk himself up all he wanted but the Great Asshole Detective had no hope against something that could wipe out entire towns. That scythe and his badge weren’t gonna do an ounce of good then. ”The new boss said we had a way around it, a way to get people out, but how do you do that with an entire town?” he muttered. Letting go of her hand, Damien wrapped an arm around Aurora, drawing her in against him. ”You ever hear about any weaknesses with them? I might not be able to do anything against supernatural germs, but there’s gotta be some way to get them to leave, at least, right?” For the story to have gotten out some people must’ve gotten out of these places they targeted. He didn’t wanna be the last one standing here, the only one to remember all that had been wiped out, all the people he’d lost.

Damien was just as clueless as Darora when it came to this high tech fancy doorbell. Oh the lengths she was preparing to go to in order to keep Tristan in the dark. There was a chance he’d already figured everything out and he was just waiting to make his move. Unlike Aurora he didn’t strike without a plan. She tried not to think about it, knowing it would send her off into a spiral of paranoia. She kept her thoughts locked on Damien. He was the one who could keep her anchored to reality, which was even more reason to keep Tristan away from them. If anything was to happen to her and Damein it would be a one way trip to a mental hospital for Aurora. As always all her eggs were in one basket and that basket was Damien. “I have no idea. These things were not made for the likes of me.” A thousand year old vampire who was born in a time when the most exciting thing was a horse and cart. Aurora had been alive for millennia, yet it felt like she had only truly been living her life properly since she’d met Damien. For centuries she either followed Tristan around, listening to his ramblings about wiping out the original family or she was avoiding him, scared he was going to send her back to some awful hospital. While he hadn’t completely drawn herself away from her brother, it was nice to have someone else in her life. A man who made her feel like the most important person in the world. It was a relief when Damien said he wasn't affected by the Wild Hunt, meaning if someone were to take her she’d be remembered by him. Just like Damien though, she wasn’t willing to give it a go though. Rumours of what would happen when you’re taken had been whispered about for centuries. “Perhaps it has something to do with your eternal promise to keep the natural balance in order.” She suggested with a smile on her face. Ironic considering his relationship with a vampire. The beings who aimed to do the opposite, although Aurora had been toning down that aspect. She didn’t want Damien to be fired from his job. “It is impossible. Once they are finished with this town they will move onto another town. Is he suggesting you follow them around forever?” Aurora’s body eased in Damien’s as he drew her closer. It sounded ridiculous. “I have heard they can be killed. Probably by the usual you know decapitation, removal of the heart… if they have one. We just have to make sure we are extra vigilant when a thunderstorm strikes. They travel through thunderstorms.” Just another thing she needed to relay back to Tristan. Hopefully he wouldn’t insist that they were to pack their bags and leave town until everything settled. The town was becoming dangerous for the pair of them. “How is your new boss? He seems… annoying.” The last boss left them to do whatever they wanted, which was ideal for her and Damien. “How does one become Death? Did they receive a promotion?” She couldn’t imagine Damien was itching to move up the chain of command to become Death. Lots of responsibility and zero pay. It seemed like some badly ran telecoms company. DAMIEN BECK

They weren’t made for the likes of both of them. Damien frowned at the phone, feeling like the decades he’d been alive had suddenly crept up on him. If that thing hadn’t taken over Sonny’s body, he’d probably have lived through that last bank robbery. He might even have still been alive. Old and grey, either kicking his heels up on a beach somewhere where there was no extradition treaty with the US or shuffling around in an orange jumpsuit behind bars. If Aurora had remained human, the Mikaelsons never appearing to turn the de Martels, she’d have died hundreds of years before. Maybe there’d be some stone carved with her name in a cemetery, but he’d never have known of her existence, let alone fighting so hard to protect her in a town that seemed determined to chew the both of them up.
Adapting constantly must grow easier over time, but it didn’t erase the problems that had clung on through the centuries. Over protective brothers were on an entirely different level to overly difficult cell phone apps. Family was always family. A thousand years ago people had probably been looking to escape them, although it’d take weeks on a horse to make it happen then. He didn’t want to consider how many ways Tristan had of keeping eyes on Aurora now, or how many Elias suddenly had at his hands as Death.
His shoulders stiffened as he held on to Aurora’s hand, their joined fingers settling on his thigh. She smiled up at him, and like it always did, the sight of her lit up like that eased the frustration Elias had left him choking on. If there was no way of stopping the Wild Hunt, or curtailing that virus, then there was a good chance they’d all be too busy for Elias to pay too much attention to what any one of them was up to. Eventually he’d realise if one of them decided to slip the leash, but there was a good chance he couldn’t just pop to wherever one of them was to drag him back. Damien let out a wry huff of breath, the corners of his mouth lifting for a moment. ”If it is then some of us might be screwed. There’s only one of us holding onto that idea.” Maybe Cory would count as a second, but he seemed to be on Elias’ shit list just the way the rest of them were right now.
Knowing that he couldn’t catch the virus had been some sort of a relief, until he’d realised Elias hadn’t promised that they might not be carriers. He’d been scared of watching her fall apart the way Hector had done since he’d seen how whacked out of his mind the vampire was. No amount of warning Aurora had convinced her to leave with him yet. When the time came he’d walk without a second thought, no consequence could compare with losing her. That meant he needed to worry about the Wild Hunt just as much. Elias had seemed sure they could rescue people from them, but how much could he honestly take the guy’s word?
Damien shook his head, touching his lips against the top of Aurora’s head as he gathered her into his side. He wanted to scoff over everything that came out of the guy’s mouth, but being the straightest fucking arrow meant that he was probably incapable of lying. ”I doubt it. He was warning Cory about trying to take too many people out of wherever they’re storing ‘em. Like he doesn’t want them turning their attention on us.” What the fuck would the boy scout do if he managed to lose all of his reapers to those things? Their orders seemed to be to just try and stop the damage here, screw the rest of the world. Luckily the only people who meant a thing to him were right here for now.
Cory probably wouldn’t have the balls to stand up against one, although Leah was feral enough to make a play for it if she got really desperate. He might’ve tried if things got really bad, but not if it meant him not coming home to Aurora. Damien’s gaze ticked to the window and he shuddered faintly. That explained the constant storms they’d had lately. If each one just meant a single person going missing, there were already plenty of people snatched out of the town and who knew who they actually were. ”We’ll stay here when they hit, act like we’ll melt if we get wet,” he joked lightly. They’d told Connie the same thing when they were kids, making out like she was made of sugar and one step outside when it rained would have her melting away.
His hand ran up and down her upper arm, a slow meditative brush of his fingers. Damien frowned faintly, but the corners of his mouth were already tipping up into a smile. ”That’s putting it mildly. He was tight enough to squeak when he walks before this. Now he’s worse. He’s got a rule book and he’s gonna make us all follow it.” He wasn’t about to suggest to her what might happen if Elias decided they weren’t being good enough little reapers. His mouth pursed for a second, his eyes narrowing behind the dark frames of his glasses.
”Only by stabbing the old Death in the back, probably literally. He didn’t think he was doing a good enough job so he staged a little coup. Now he’s waving Death’s scythe around up there, trying to dictate to us how all of this is gonna go. We’ve already been warned – we don’t associate with murderers. It’s bullshit. No matter what happens, I’m not gonna walk away from you baby. I don’t put it past him not to try and force it. You see some giant blond, sour faced asshole following you around, you tell me, OK? Don’t try facing him down on your own.” Who knew what Elias was capable of now that he’d become the Grim Reaper. He didn’t put it past the guy to try and force his people to behave by removing their temptations.

Aurora brushed off the rumours of the virus at the start. She struggled to believe something so simple was capable of bringing down ancient vampires, but then it struck Hector. She was only a few centuries older than him. If it had sent him insane, then it would do the same to her, although some would say it would barely make a difference. She was already diagnosed as being clinically insane. Damien’s anxiety about the whole situation was justified though. She would be terrified if she found out there was a virus floating around which could turn him into a psychopathic killer. They couldn’t flee Mystic Falls though, due to her brother’s hold over her. Up until recently Aurora hadn't exactly done much to keep the natural balance in order. Vampires never did. Every time a human was killed a reaper would come running. It was the only way she knew how to get Damien’s attention at the start. Kill a human and there was a chance he’d appeared. Most people would call the person, but not Aurora. She’d always been a little dramatic. “The idea of keeping everything in balance is ridiculous anyway. Witches have been trying to do so for centuries and failed.” It was laughable that vampires were created by a witch. They were the reason vampires existed. But the idea of ghost riders was more concerning to her than a virus. She’d rather go insane than get trapped in another reality for eternity. Eventually she’d lose her mind there too. “They store these people?” She was always under the impression the person disappeared. Evaporated into thin air. She rested her head against Damien’s chest, her hand rested on his chest, “Do not make an enemy of those things. They are very old. Older than me.” If they turned on Damien there was a high chance she’d struggle to save him. “You guys could try the whole killing touch trick.” It was a trick she was also holding up her sleeve for Elijah. If Tristan were to ever find out about her and Damien that would be the first thing she’d tell him. Damien could kill Elijah. Aurora smiled at Damien’s comment. It was a starting point though. If Aurora avoided thunderstorms then there was a chance she could avoid getting taken. “I think if they wanted me they would have taken me by now.” She mused quietly, her eyes settling on the window for a second. Perhaps her name hadn’t made it onto their list of victims. Her eyes slid away from the window and settled on Damien’s fingers as they glided over her skin lightly. How had she been so lucky to meet someone like Damien? A man who was willing to do anything to keep her safe. She was his number one priority. “Boring.” Wasn’t it good enough that he was out there collecting souls? But she knew Damien couldn’t veer too far away from the rules or he’d lose his job. Losing his job could result in him dying. Death was the only one keeping Damien alive. Aurora straightened up, removing her head from Damein’s chest as her eyes lit up with excitement. Ideas were already brewing in her mind about what they could do. “He may think he is powerful and strong, but nothing will ever come between us.” She rested her left hand on his cheek, with a smile on her face, “But…” Her voice trailed off as her smile settled into a mischievous smirk, “All you need to do is kill him then you become Death, right? I know it is not as simple as just killing him, but we have time to come up with a plan.” Time was on their side. They had an eternity to take down Death. DAMIEN BECK
