The map had been up on his bedroom wall since he’d arrived in Mystic Falls. He’d found it in a bookshop in Charlottesville as they’d stopped on the way to town. His dad had insisted on dropping by every bookstore they’d passed on route from Oregon to sign books, as though he had hoards of desperate fans in these small towns who would go crazy at the sight of signed copies. As he usually did Riley had found himself drifting through the aisles. Fiction had held little appeal, so he’d ended up in the local history section, picking through the maps of what was going to become home (hopefully).
Riley studied it again now as he carefully folded it to put into his bag. There were pinholes all over it, the rainbow scatter of pins that had previously pierced it pulled free and scattered over the top of his desk. Now there were red crosses scored over it instead – the places they’d searched. Green blobs showed where they’d found something of Danny’s last day. There weren’t enough of them, even after months of searching. The security camera had shown Danny walking out of the building on campus and then that feed had turned to static. It had taken half an hour to clear, by which time Danny had simply vanished.
He picked up his bag, squeezing it before he slipped it over his shoulder and headed for the door. Not sure what would help, he’d gathered a few more of the things Danny had left at his house. So far none of the tracking spells they’d tried had found anything, neither had the ground searches, but he wasn’t about to give up hope that he would get his fiancé back. Danny had brought him back from the Other Side and they’d had a handful of incredible years after that. If Danny had been killed – as much as it pained him, he knew it had to have happened or Danny would’ve fought his way back to them by now – then they would get him back. This wasn’t how their story was going to end.
Thinking too hard about what Danny might’ve gone through, what he was still going through, could break him, so he’d done his best to push the thought of his head. Riley knew the only thing he could do to help with that now was to get Danny back. It drifted through his head as he drove towards Henrik’s house though. The darach that Danny was sure was coming for him had branded him, he wasn’t likely to have been gentle afterwards. Swallowing back the thought, Riley tried to concentrate on the road. Danny would be alright, he just had to hold onto his faith.
Minutes later he was pulling up in front of Henrik’s home. Kaleb, Ben and the pack had done their best with the searches, doing everything they could think of to try and help with the search. Looking at what felt like another dead end, he’d reached out to the man who’d brought him back from the other side. Surely if anybody had the magic to finally break through whatever wall was between them and Danny it had to be one of the Original family. Still, nerves opened up a yawning chasm in the pit of his stomach as he got out of the car and headed up to the door to ring the bell.
When Henrik answered the door, Riley offered him an anxious smile. He swung the bag down off of his shoulder, holding it up against his chest as though it would shield him from another failure. ”Hi,” he murmured. ”Thanks so much for offering to do this.” His throat was already going tight, a feeling that didn’t go away when he cleared it. ”I bought some more of Danny’s things. I’m not sure what might help, you know?” So far nothing had and with every failure he felt Danny slipping further and further away from him.

Henrik knew the pain of losing a loved one all too well. He hadn’t been able to save Olivia from the angels when they’d attacked and he had lost her as well as their unborn children. He had been able to make a deal to bring them back to life in exchange for letting the angels take him and he’d left a letter to Olivia explaining everything but he had thought that he would never get to see her again or meet their children. Riley was going through something similar now and Henrik knew that he had to do everything he could in order to help. He had been able to bring Riley back from the Other Side with ease and he’d brought back a couple of Danny’s friends when he’d asked for a favour but from what Riley had told him, this wasn’t going to be quite so easy. Danny had been cursed and it sounded like a warlock had already been trying to locate him but to no avail. Henrik could only imagine how difficult that had to be for Riley, not only was Danny gone but there seemed to be no way of locating him. Henrik hadn’t tried looking for Danny himself yet, though, and he knew that he wasn’t going to give up. If he had to speak to Castiel or Hannah and ask them to search Heaven for Danny then he knew he would but right now he hoped it wouldn’t come to that. When people died a lot of people thought that they were meant to stay dead but Henrik was proof that it didn’t have to be that way and so was Riley. A lot of people had come back in Mystic Falls, Henrik had brought some of them back himself while others had come back through different means. Danny had been branded by a darach because of a curse that had plagued his family for generations but it was clear that he meant a lot to Riley and the pack and he was a friend so Henrik knew that he had to try. News about Danny’s death hadn’t been publicised probably because they all hoped it would be possible to bring him back and technically his body had never been found so Henrik hadn’t realised what had happened straightaway. The moment Riley had called Henrik had given his word that he would do what he could and he intended on sticking to that. There were other things going on in Mystic Falls as well, there always were it seemed, but this was important too and he made his way to the front of the house and opened the door after hearing the bell ring. “Hi Riley, come on in,” he said, stepping aside so he could enter the house. “No problem, I’m so sorry for everything you’ve been going through,” Henrik added gently as Riley thanked him. He knew that he would have been going out of his mind if it was Olivia who had disappeared and couldn’t be located so he really did understand. “I appreciate it. Let’s see what you’ve brought,” he said as he led the way through to the kitchen so Riley could set everything down on the counter. “I’ll need something that has a deep connection to Danny.”RILEY PARKER

At some point, Riley supposed, he was supposed to give up hope. People did eventually, the lack of answers wearing them down until it felt better not knowing what was happening. If you could still believe that maybe they were out there somewhere, just beyond your reach, you could move on with your life. Even after all their searches had failed, Riley wasn’t ready to give up. They didn’t have a single answer about what had happened on campus that night. It was like Danny had simply vanished, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of his life. Nothing had even started to fill it in. As he stood in front of Henrik’s door, it felt as though he was about to fall into it right after Danny. Only it would do no good, he wouldn’t find him there, the only hope they had was for him to keep fighting to bring Danny home.
”Thanks,” Riley murmured hoarsely as Henrik opened the door and ushered him into his house. His gaze flickered around him, taking in the happy family home. This was what he was supposed to have with Danny one day. Maybe with kids of their own, together either way. Decades of marriage. He smiled faintly as he looked back at Henrik, the expression tinged with the sadness that seemed to linger over every other feeling these days. ”Thank you,” he said, feeling like he used the words more than any others now. ”I appreciate it. Everybody’s been so good, helping to try and find Danny.” So much more than he knew he’d ever be able to pay back, even if Danny come back to him. He could spend a lifetime trying to make amends for the miracle, if he got it, and it still wouldn’t be enough.
Going through Danny’s bedroom with Scott had been hard. Seeing reminders of their relationship everywhere, finding little parts of Danny’s life that he hadn’t been there to share. Unearthing the letters, falling apart as he read through the one for him. It was in his bag now, but Riley wasn’t sure that would provide the deepest connection for Danny. ”I kinda went with a scatter of things,” he explained, swinging his back off of his shoulder. He opened up his back pack, taking photos out first, a handful of them – him and Danny, Danny and Jackson, the pack, his family – then a shell from the beach where they’d met, other items he’d found in their room at Whitmore, the letter to him still in its envelope. Finally Riley slipped the engagement ring from his finger. ”Do you think that’s why we haven’t found him yet? We didn’t have the right thing to connect him to us? Kaleb’s tried tracking spells, we’ve looked all over Whitmore…” It had rapidly become obvious that the darach hadn’t just … hadn’t left Danny there after whatever had happened. If he had someone would have surely found him by now.

Henrik knew that life in Mystic Falls was dangerous, he had known that from the very beginning but his family had decided to make the town their home so he had decided to do the same. There were so many people in the town that he cared about now and he would always do everything he could in order to help them. The fight against Raziel was taking up a lot of his time as was making sure that his family and the students at the Salvatore School were safe but there were other people who needed his help too and Henrik knew that he was never going to turn his back on them. He had heard about what had happened to Danny too late which had resulted in Riley and the others hurting for far longer than they should have done. He wasn’t sure where a Druid would go when they died and the fact that Kaleb hadn’t been able to locate his spirit didn’t bode well but Henrik wasn’t the kind of person to give up on someone he cared about. Danny was a friend and Henrik knew that he was going to find a way to bring him back to the people who loved him no matter how long it might take. Letting Riley into the house, Henrik closed the door behind him before leading the way through to the kitchen. He knew that the living room would be more comfortable but this would give him more space to work. He could see the sadness written all over Riley’s face right now and Henrik wanted nothing more than to erase that. He and Danny were both so young and they should have their whole lives ahead of them. Henrik didn’t know much about the curse that had plagued Danny’s family for generations and from what he could gather no one really did but one thing he did know was that Danny didn’t deserve to die and that was a wrong that he was determined to put right. “I know the pain of losing the person you love,” he said gently. He had felt it when Olivia had died and he’d made a deal with the angels to exchange his life for hers without even having to think twice about it. He knew that it would be different for Riley, he wouldn’t have to go to that extreme but the pain he was sure to be feeling right now had to be no less real. As Riley said that everyone had been so good trying to find Danny, Henrik felt a smile touch his lips. “I wouldn’t have expected any less. He means a lot to people, as do you.”Normally locator spells were fairly simple even after someone had passed away but these weren’t normal circumstances. Kaleb hadn’t been able to locate Danny which meant that his spirit was probably being cloaked somehow and that meant that something with a much stronger connection to him than normal would be needed. There were ways of removing whatever was keeping him from being found but it wasn’t going to be easy and Henrik knew it might take some time but he had to try. “That’s a good idea,” he nodded as Riley said he went with different things. The photos would no doubt mean a lot to Danny but it was something much more personal that would be needed. Henrik didn’t know the significance of the shell Riley had brought with them and there were some other items as well but it was the flash of metal that caught Henrik’s eye and he looked up to see Riley pulling a ring off his finger. “Possibly. Whoever it was who was after him could have shielded him from normal magic, that’s why I need something with a deep connection to him,” he explained. “Is that what I think it is?” he asked, nodding to the ring in Riley’s hand. Riley had been wearing it so chances were it belonged to him rather than Danny but if Danny had been the one to ask then the love it symbolised just might be strong enough to find him. “Did Danny ask you to marry him?”RILEY PARKER
