Unless it happened with fire, out under an open sky, cooking was not his forte – it was Alex’s. Viktor muttered under his breath, dragging the wooden spoon through the second batch of eggs. The first had burned to the bottom of the pan and now littered the bottom of the trash can. He’d scrubbed the pan out, started again slowly, as though his speed or the lack of light in the kitchen that was only just being bathed in the golden glow of morning were the reasons he’d screwed up the first lot.
He forced himself to go easy, waiting for the eggs to start changing consistency before he dragged the spoon through again. Maybe if he’d spent enough time in the kitchen as a child he’d have learned this, but getting him to sit for more than a few minutes at a time had been impossible. Desperately he’d wanted to be outside with the men, digging around in the engines of the equipment they’d use to try and farm the rocky ground, only coming in when they were called to a meal and then the first five minutes would be spent trying to scrub the grease from under his nails with nagyapa watching over his shoulder. Only after had he realised just how much he had missed out on by not spending more time at her side the way Alex had.
If his brother had been home this morning he’d have talked him into helping. Leave Harmony to sleep, make breakfast for her – pamper. Alex hadn’t been though. He trusted him to stay safe, but any of them spending nights away from the house were bound to add tension. The pack had only just come back together and already they had been at odds with the Alpha.
A huff of breath, another mutter about men proclaiming themselves Gods – their family had suffered enough at the hands of men like that. Mikaelson had already gotten his claws into Aliz, he would not do the same with Alex. Family – pack – needed to stick together, especially if they were to grow.
The frown cut deeper, but he gave the eggs one last flip before he turned off the heat. They looked good this time, no black, no egg sticking to the pan hard enough that he would need a chisel to free it later. Cooked enough to finish in the heat of the pan as he buttered the toast and set that on the edges of the plate with the bacon. By now the scent of food – good, nutritious food – had probably permeated the house, but luckily Harmony still slept. Rest was as important as eating right. Sleep, food, no stress.
Eggs tumbled out onto the plates in fluffy curls. He set the knives and forks in place on the tray with the plates, cups added – kave, coffee, thick and hot to warm blood, good for the body. The pans he would handle after, the others would handle their own breakfast today anyway – if Alex didn’t get back before the day had really started.
Quiet still lingered in the hallway upstairs. Viktor drifted through it and eased back through the bedroom door, closing it with an elbow. He eased down on their bed, glad that their room was one of the first almost finished now. The tray was set on the ejjeli szekrény - nightstand, Harmony called it a nightstand, not that it made much sense – the covers eased back just enough for him to slip back beneath them.
Curling around her again, Viktor pressed his lips to Harmony’s shoulder blade, the back of her neck. His hand curled around her stomach, fingers tracing its soft line and deepening the lines between his brows. No change yet, not like when the cows and goats would get pregnant, their bellies growing round before the other changes came in – the milk leaving them full. ”Morning,” Viktor murmured, his mouth dragging up to her ear as his hand rose, cupping curves not yet changed either. ”Megbasz.” The curse muttered against her skin. Was this another part of this town’s curse? A payoff that wouldn’t come because their luck had already run out here – pack together, house for them all, too much good already.

━ watch me make them bow ━ HARMONY NEVER THOUGHT SHE’D LIKE THIS life. Never thought she’d be able to adapt, that she’d always wish for something more, something (people) to tinker with, a big city to lose herself in. She found purpose in helping build this home, though (“build” in a relative sense, obviously━like, she did the decorating, she didn’t actually get her hands dirty). It was fulfilling, especially once they had a real bed, and she didn’t have to feel like she was slumming it━not entirely, anyway. She started to see it differently, too. They weren’t living in squaller; her man was literally building her a home. Sure, the groundwork was done for him, but that didn’t mean Viktor wasn’t rebuilding it from the ground up, customizing it for her.
And she found purpose in living a simple life with him: gathering and home-making, small things she never thought she’d find joy in. It was enough for her.
Plus, she still got to sleep in, which meant she was always (more or less) happy.
Harmony had been in and out of sleep for about an hour━not that she knew what time it was━and could hear soft clanking in the kitchen downstairs, but it didn’t rouse her from the bed. Not yet. She was content to stay wrapped in their puffy duvet a little longer, lingering in the bed that wasn’t as warm without Viktor beside her.
She awoke again as his weight shifted the bed, though she didn’t move or open her eyes, simply allowing consciousness to stream in. Harmony hummed quietly as his lips touched her skin, hands━roughened from a life of hard work━sliding over her belly. She made the same noise again in response to his verbal greeting, a breath sucked in through her teeth as her hips pressed back and into him. Harmony was grinning, though it faltered a moment after he cursed.
It’d been one of the first words she’d learned from him, and while she supposed it could’ve been used another way, he never did. Not while they were in bed (unless he was actually angry), and his tone, more than anything, made it obvious they weren’t thinking the same thing.
“What?” She asked, suddenly very awake, no longer even in the hazy space of thick air around their pleasure. Well, just hers, apparently. Harmony’s eyes flicked open, then narrowed at the bare wall across from her, shielding themselves from the bright light━one of the only downfalls of sleeping in. Wait, did she smell bacon?
“There a problem?” Her voice was soft and languid again, with an edge of teasing as she smirked, lifting a hand to cup the back of his palm. Seriously, what could be his issue with this?

For nagyanya and nagyapa it had been the revolution, the push that changed their lives and carried them across the world. For them, it had been the hunters. An explosion in the centre of the life he’d thought he’d live until he was too old and grey to even run with the rest of the pack. Left sat in front of the fire on those freezing winter nights to entertain the great-grandchildren he probably would’ve had with Jaina with stories of the old country. All of that had been blown apart, a hail of bullets shredding what might’ve been. Driving him away, to her.
Would the cabin have been like this? No. Not so comfortable, not in the way Harmony was making it. A different woman in his bed, one whose face had blurred in his memory over time (except for the nights when the dreams came and all that pain was crystal clear again). Like a badly cut joint, parts from their old life could have fit here, but not perfectly. He was working too hard for it to be like that. All parts had to fit right, snick snick, slide into place one at a time.
There was a rhythm still to things, even if he was the only one to feel them. That was his role as Alpha, to drive that rhythm on. Harmony would scoff at that thought, some comment about his lack of rhythm slipping from lips still soft from the sleep he’d finally disturbed. Thinking she was in charge, she would’ve claimed to be the hand that created that beat – and perhaps there were times right here in this bed when she was. Most times he would snatch control at the end, losing a little of his grip on it right at the end. That was the way of things though, with the animals back home, and here in their pack.
Looking for some sign of its success, that all those nights, and mornings, and whenever the rest weren’t here, he had studied her body. Each curve traced until Viktor was sure they were etched upon his own bones. Whether the curve of her stomach was softer today, or the weight filling his palms was heavier this morning. Questing thumbs settled in place on their peaks, his fingers squeezing faintly, just in case he was wrong as he failed to find what he thought he might. Even the press of Harmony’s hips back against his failed to push the thoughts from his mind so something else could rise in their place.
Viktor grumbled under his breath at her question, his hands shifting subtly like he was comparing what was in one to the other. Shifting slightly on the bed, he inched forward, his chest pressed more firmly to his back as he glanced down over his shoulder. ”Yes, problem,” he growled. ”Still too small. Still flat. Mint egy tehén, aki nem találkozott az első bikával.” It had never taken any animal this long, not even when they had the years so cold that they barely had enough feed for the animals. They might be half starved, but still they could make sure more calves, more chicks, were born. Nagyapa had said that nature would always ensure that there were enough to carry on.
Once Harmony had sworn that he had already given her a baby. Lies that had given him only a moment’s hope before he’d realised that it was just a way to shock Aliz. Alex had seen the gleam of a better future in it too, next time he would feel it properly. He would make a good uncle, if only…
”Work the same.” One hand slid down to her stomach, drawing her back closer to him as though in explanation. ”But not work. Each month, not work. Why, Harmony?” His lips pursed as he tried to turn her towards him. Viktor studied her face. Was it her? Him? Perhaps how they did it. Animals did one way, always, but they – with Harmony it was different ways. Always ending the same, but still. He shook his head, surely this wasn’t some sort of punishment for the way he was leading the pack. All he did wrong being turned around to cost them something that should have been natural and easy.

━ watch me make them bow ━ TOO SMALL? WAS HE FUCKING STUPID? THE SKIN between her brows creased, and she tried to decide between throwing a hand back to hit him or just yelling. “What did you just say?” She bit at him, the words almost completely unfamiliar, especially in the sentence he’d strung together. “Small? Are you blind?” It was half the reason she had so many problems before her powers had even set in. No guy had ever claimed her chest was small. Was she not enough for Viktor anymore?
He brought her hips into his anyway, his body pressed to the back of hers in a way that told her otherwise, but there was nothing to suggest he actually cared about her naked skin in his hands. She considered his next words, his confusion, her own twisting up her face. Harmony turned towards him, looking over Viktor, finding that, at the very least, he wasn’t disgusted or uninterested. It looked like the opposite, actually.
Her chest wasn’t getting any bigger. Month after month, it didn’t “work.” And… he was grabbing the curve of her stomach when he said it was flat.
Oh my God. Harmony suddenly realized what he meant, and her eyes widened as she started to laugh. It was partly relief━the fact that he didn’t find her unattractive now━and partly amazement at how he could say such clueless shit again and again. It was kind of cute.
“Why I’m not pregnant?” She laughed again and shook her head, hands rising to his chest. “That’s why you’re so upset? You want me to have your baby?” Harmony scoffed at the idea. He hadn’t wanted one before, and while things had obviously changed, she wasn’t going to not throw that back in his face. “Remember when you didn’t want one?” She practically sneered.
After a moment, she decided to go a little easy on him━which only meant telling him the truth; she wasn’t gonna hold back from teasing him about it. “I have━” No, that was just gonna make it more confusing for him. “I take birth control, Viktor. It’s like… medicine. It stops me from getting pregnant until I stop taking it.” She’d be surprised if he’d heard of such a thing, or if he wasn’t totally appalled by changing the natural system or whatever. Maybe he had a point, but it was important when men couldn’t control themselves around her, and when Viktor had never even heard of a condom.

It always took patience to tell whether or not a mating had taken. Maybe the cow would refuse the bull next time, but not always – and that had never been a problem with Harmony. They usually had to wait for something to swell, their belly to grow, the milk to come in. Signs that were easy to spot. No mistake then. Their bellies would grow and come the right season there would be those hollers in the night, nagyapa or papa in the barn waking them all to go and help. Long days making sure babies and mamas were healthy. Months after spent watching the calves or kids grow. Every year it would be the same without fail. Of course, some cows never had calves, something was wrong inside. More wrong than this.
”I see, no problem,” Viktor grumbled, Harmony’s protests not registering in the way they were meant to. If he thought maybe there was some change, that would make him blind – or stupid. He’d spent his entire childhood helping with the animals though, getting to know every sign that the breeding had taken. ”Még nincs tej, de még van idő rá.” Maybe he’d been too young when Aliz and Alex had been born to take it all in, but he’d seen the other women and what pregnancy did to their bodies.
His hand shifted to her hip as Harmony rolled towards him, his thumb tracing the lush line. No fuller there either, although mama had always complained that her hips had gotten wider with every pregnancy – something his father had always grinned about. The briefest thought of them deepened his frown, rusty brows almost meeting at the bridge of his nose. Four children for them, a handful for Uncle Laszlo and his aunts. Each time they would announce it to the family and they would celebrate. Was it him? It wasn’t always the cow that was at fault. Sometimes the bull couldn’t do his job – although that had never been a problem with Harmony either. Usually just her pressed close to him like this was enough to start that shift, the tingle working its way through him, heat following in its wake until it felt as though the only way to slake it was to take her.
There was no mistaking the truth as he pressed Harmony back into him. No way to fool himself into thinking it was just too early. As though he had ticked her, she started to laugh. He puffed out a breath, muttering to himself before his lips pursed. ”Igen!” he growled. ”Not funny, Harmony. Should have happened by now. All the times we…” Instead of saying the words out loud, he used that hand to pull her back as though they would do it again now.
Viktor lifted his hand, holding a finger up between them as though he could cut off her argument. ”Never said don’t want baby. Áldás. Blessing, precious.” He’d been doubtful there had been a baby then, especially when the first mention had seemed to be designed to shut Aliz up. The frown softened as he studied her face, ignoring the edge her words had. Had she not thought that eventually they would help the pack grow? After everything they’d gone through, after she’d come back, it had felt like time.
Confusion edged out grouchiness, Viktor’s mouth pursing around a soundless repeat of the word medicine. Most of the pack had never needed it. Nagyana had made what they did need, her teas, the herbs, to keep those who didn’t shift healthy, but never something that would stop a pregnancy. ”Why … what …” he started, his gaze dropping dubiously to her stomach again. ”You don’t want baby? Pack won’t grow without. Family won’t grow.” More than that he wouldn’t see a child looking up at him with her mother’s ocean eyes and a smile that could convince him to do almost anything.

━ watch me make them bow ━ OF COURSE HE WAS MAD WHEN SHE started laughing━when was Viktor not mad? But, on top of that, he was serious about this, and Harmony couldn’t stop her amusement at how innocent he was. How adorable.
She slung one leg over his hips as he tugged her in, as if he wanted to show her what he meant instead of saying it. He was so primal, so physical, even if he did know the word in English. He’d heard her use it enough times, after all.
Harmony scoffed, rolling her eyes as he called it a blessing. Yeah, sure. “You can’t tell me you were happy about it.” She muttered, her eyes finding her fingers, splayed on his chest. Maybe some part of her was still hurt by his reaction━despite all the screaming they’d done over it directly after. Things were different now, too, and she had to accept that he’d also been shocked by his family’s arrival at the time. Plus, she’d placed the announcement in a way that it would upset him, then got angry when the reaction was just what she wanted.
She gave in, finally, letting him know the truth. There wasn’t anything wrong with either of them, not really━it was a choice she’d made a long time ago. Her IUD would likely have to be replaced soon, but maybe this time, she…
No, that was crazy.
“Oh, so I’m supposed to be the one-woman puppy mill to grow your pack?” She scoffed again, “Why’s that my responsibility? How do you even know I’ll pop out more werewolves?” Truthfully, she was avoiding the topic altogether, mostly because then she’d have to deal with how she felt about having kids… and how that would undoubtedly clash with Viktor’s feelings. She didn’t want him to give up on this just because she’d make a shitty mother━or only give him a bunch of little sirens that weren’t good for anything.
Harmony lifted her head a bit, peering over Viktor’s frame at the plate resting on the nightstand. She grinned, looking down at him again as she settled into the pillows. “You made me breakfast?” She hummed lightly, pressing him closer with the back of her leg, leaning in to ghost her lips over his. This had to distract him, right?

Viktor’s hand slipped to Harmony’s hip as she draped her leg over his, smoothing over a curve that might still grow. He wasn’t ready to say it would never happen for them, only bothered that it hadn’t yet. Over the last couple of years doubt had tugged at him like gravity at the plane, always trying to pull him down, to ground him. The one person that had kept him going was laying at his side now. Was it wrong to hope that one day the pack would grow again? Springing from the two of them the same way it had his nagyapa and nagyanya. Maybe it was greedy, but each month there had been the hope there. Some joy to come and erase all that he had managed to do wrong. But, Viktor thought bitterly, maybe he was doing this wrong too.
The line of his lips tightened as she scoffed at him, his frown deepening. He hadn’t been full of joy when she had announced her pregnancy to his family, no. Then he had been sure it was a lie, although some tiny part of him had questioned how bad it would’ve been if they’d been blessed. She hadn’t needed to do it to keep him from leaving her, even then wherever he would’ve gone for the sake of his family, Harmony would’ve come along with them. Being pack meant staying together, loving her meant not letting her walk away. ”If true, would’ve been,” Viktor said on a sigh after a moment. ”Knew it wasn’t.” He’d thought it was another game to her, some way to bait him. Now it was so much more than that. Megbasz. She hadn’t allowed herself to become pregnant. If there was one thing he hated more than being lied to, it was feeling like a fool. That feeling like he’d been a complete idiot bit deep. His gaze locked on her stomach, as though he could see within – a pill sprouting vicious little creatures that went after his seed before it could take root itself of her. ”No,” Viktor snapped. He puffed out a breath, his hand finding her hip again. His thumb skimmed her stomach, like he could rub away the sudden tension between them. ”Supposed to want baby … thought you wanted baby.” He’d thought that she was ready to lead the pack with him. After so many years of the family being fractured, he’d hoped he could start to really rebuild it.
Harmony’s questions lodged in his heart like thorns, he could feel them there when he swallowed. So much doubt that there was suddenly something wrong with what he’d wanted. ”Not just your responsibility,” he said on a sigh, his gaze rising to meet his. ”Eniko too, some day, or Aliz. Family always meant to grow.” That had been before they’d been torn apart, cut down by men who would see things like him destroyed. ”If not werewolves, don’t matter. Wolf, siren, either always be pack. Will be loved.” Those thorns snagged his voice, silencing him for a moment as he swallowed painfully. ”Can it happen? Sirens, werewolves … what if can’t make baby together?” It wasn’t like horses and cows had ever reproduced. What if they were too different and it would never happen for them?
The worry had sunk in, bringing an odd wave of melancholy with it. He watched as Harmony looked past him, studying her face like he’d find his answers there. Her lips curved into a grin before she settled back down, the brightness of it easing that ache in his chest. One corner of his mouth lifted, his hand returning to the small of Harmony’s back to hold her there against him as she pulled him in with her leg. ”Mm hmm,” he murmured. ”To celebrate maybe. Must eat, be strong for when … if … we make baby. You should eat … still warm.” His voice whispered over her lips, an order pressed there with tenderness as he kissed her fully.

━ watch me make them bow ━ DID SHE WANT A BABY? NO. SO WHY DID she find herself thinking about it when Viktor asked? About what their lives would be like with a few tiny mini-Viktors running around? And why didn’t the image disgust her?
And there was no fucking way he knew she’d been lying the first time. Not with the look on his face when she’d said it, or later, when she revealed the truth. She saw the hope there, the hurt.
“Supposed to?” Harmony scoffed. She wasn’tsupposed to want anything, not just ‘cause he did or that was what he expected of her. Hasn’t he learned his fucking lesson by now?
“I’d like to see you tell Aliz she’s supposed to have a bunch of pups.” Harmony said, her lips twisted in a smirk. “Or the guy that’s gonna put ‘em in her.” He’d probably be as submissive as Alex━someone she could easily bully and boss around. But who knew, really, ‘cause these wolves were born like this. Raised to be animals, to forward the pack, whatever. And the problem was always the same━Harmony wasn’t like that.
She understood that they’d lost most of their family, and maybe that was part of the urgency, but Harmony didn’t know what she wanted… and she didn’t want to hold him back.
Her heart split open when he claimed that it didn’t matter if their kids were wolves or not. Split open in a good way, like all her love was bleeding out for him right then and there. It was the complete opposite (she assumed) to what her mother had wanted, and she made that obvious every Goddamn day that Harmony was alive. What if she didn’t know any better? What if she treated them the same way?
In any case, she didn’t say anything about it. She didn’t want him to know what kind of warmth and joy filled her chest when he promised he’d love their children no matter what. She didn’t want him to get his hopes up.
Irritation filled her when he pondered whether or not they even could make a baby, though. Her brows furrowed together, and she was going to snap at him, but she smelled the breakfast and thought distraction was a better route.
But there it was again. If.
She pulled away and moved over him, shifting so she pushed Viktor onto his back before straddling his abdomen. Harmony leaned over to pluck a piece of bacon off her plate, then munched on it as she stared down at him. Harmony raised a brow. “You seriously think we can’t make one?” She didn’t clock the challenge in her voice, or how dangerous it was. “I feel like they’d just end up one way or the other.” She didn’t have much of an argument, but it still bugged her too much to not say anything about it.
Harmony held out the last bite of bacon and slipped it between his lips, mumbling, “This isn’t half bad.” With a smile. She was still mad, though━she just couldn’t figure out why.

Ending up thrown out into a world he hadn’t really understood, he’d struggled. He wouldn’t have admitted it, wouldn’t show that weakness, but Viktor had found out fast that the world outside had been nothing like the one he lived in the village. Too much noise, too many people doing stupid things. Not looking, not talking sense, idiot ideas filling their head. It had sharpened the ache for all that he had lost in his gut until it had almost driven him back. Harmony had been the same at first, their opinions clashing as often as they’d been similar (on purpose sometimes, he’d thought). Even now it was like they looked at things from opposite ends – drapes blocked out light, they were fine, no too ugly, they wouldn’t do.
The house had only helped to cement the need that had been growing as those arguments had grown less frequent. Family. He wanted one, bigger than just his brother and sisters, than Tazi and even Harmony. A house full of loud voices and laughter, the same way theirs had been – when it had still existed. Aunts and uncles, all smiles, back slapping and palinka being passed around to celebrate. Months later passing baby around too, although he’d always been happy to pass the baby on to Eniko or Alex. With Harmony, though, with his own children, it would be different.
Viktor’s brow furrowed as Harmony scoffed, blue eyes narrowing down at her. He tried to smooth out those lines, to stop letting her twist his words until they were both angry. ”When you love,” he said softly. ”When spend life with someone. Then, you want baby.” It was a simplified way of saying it, like anya had told him when she had been pregnant with Alex and Aliz. Harmony wasn’t a child, like he had been then, but so much he’d had to explain to her like she was and hadn’t seen how he’d grown up.
His breath exploded out of him and Viktor’s gaze rolled away from Harmony’s again. If he even mentioned the idea to Aliz she’d have immediately grown angry. His sister had not even started looking at boys that way. Suspecting that it was all he thought she was good for would have pushed her so fast in the other direction. ”Not ready for that fight,” he grumbled before his mouth puckered. ”Not look at guys yet, still too young.” But they weren’t, were they? Viktor’s stomach twisted again, his brows settling back into that tense line. His hand smoothed over Harmony’s skin, like he could push away the thought of why his siblings had lost all that remained of their innocence when the hunters had destroyed the village and their family.
If his apa had been here, he could’ve asked. Nagyapa even. Could we? Witch and werewolf work, but siren and werewolf too different maybe. Harmony had used - what had she called it? birth control – medicine to stop baby being made, but maybe not just the reason. Asking now hadn’t felt ridiculous until Harmony started frowning. He shifted on the bed, like he expected her to argue, but then she was pulling away.
”Hey…” Viktor grumbled, rolling with her push. If she didn’t want baby yet, then fine, but this was going to eat at him. His grin was still there, but with that heavy line of his brow above. Feeling heat rise into his face at the same time it shifted down to where she sat on him, Viktor shrugged. Always embarrassing to feel like he was last one to know something. ”Only ever known witch and werewolf. Not sure if different to goat and sheep, or horse and cow. Live together, but not …” He shrugged again before he let his hands rise to her hips to press her down against him. ”One way or other, will love.” The way he loved her, probably with the same levels of frustration.
Viktor hummed lightly as Harmony slipped the bacon into his mouth. He chewed, his eyes locked on hers, giving a satisfied smile as he swallowed. ”Better than not bad. Practice working. Bacon good. Even cold.” The breakfast would settle some of what had ended up momentarily rough between them, but there were other ways to do that too. Murmured sweet words whispering over Harmony’s throat, her lips, reassurances that even if it didn’t happen, he still wanted her. Viktor reached out for another strip of bacon, tucking one end of it between his teeth before he levered himself up to share it, his hands sweeping up her back and down, settling Harmony in the right spot to practice other things too.
