Rowan waited out on the sidewalk until Ingrid’s car pulled out of sight. The mood inside of it was probably already turning frigid – putting Luc on her service always felt like a risk, but he’d proved himself again and again – both would cope until the meeting finished and they were hopefully back at the hotel tonight, though. Pulling her phone from her purse she checked the report from their staff mechanic that had been sent in the moment he’d checked the vehicle that morning. Everything in pristine condition. If anything did go wrong this time then the mechanic could try and plead his due diligence, but his head would likely still roll.
The orders had been passed through the rest of the team that morning. They were scattered amongst a dozen jobs in town now, word of the company spreading in the way she imagined Ingrid had hoped it would when the decision had been made to open another branch in Virginia (in a far quieter spot than DC). Politics tended to keep the people with power in DC, but even the busiest lobbyist took a break every now and then. Just like her.
Taking an hour out for lunch was probably a risk, but with Ingrid gone and their operatives busy, she was gonna take the chance. The cafeteria at the office handled things for most of their staff and she ate there most days that she wasn’t on the move with Ingrid. Going there would’ve meant ending up neck deep in more work, though. Today was too nice for that.
Christmas might have been over and done with already, but the town was still busy. Stores were still all lit up, the decorations here were probably going to cling on until Valentine’s day at this rate. Folks were out on the street enjoying the clear skies and crisp, cool weather, making the most of the lull that seemed to come between Christmas and New Year’s – although not always in her line of work.
She bypassed both the Grill and the Diner when she saw how busy both were and ducked into the coffee shop instead. At this point her blood was probably fifty percent caffeine anyway. Rowan shot the barista a smile and gestured towards the glass cabinets that stretched along the counter. ”Hi, can I get a triple shot latte and a toasted ham and cheese croissant, to have in, thanks,” Rowan murmured. The woman slipped her croissant into the press to melt the cheese as she paid, the coffee appearing only a minute later at the end of the counter.
With the barista’s promise to bring the croissant over, Rowan headed amongst the tables to try and find a seat. The place wasn’t as crowded as the other restaurants had been, but she was still over by the window before she thought she’d found an empty table. She rounded another and paused, grinning as she realised it wasn’t empty – but it wasn’t all bad news.
”Hi,” she said as she paused by the table and looked down at Julian. ”I was hoping I’d run into you again. Did you get any of the cookies I dropped off?” His brother had promised he’d make sure Julian got them, but she hadn’t wanted to pester either of them to check about it. She’d figured eventually one of their people would end up at the hospital again and then she’d have a valid reason to be drifting around the hallways, keeping an eye out for Doctor Leroux again.

Days off were rare for Julian these days but if anything that just made him want to enjoy them when they did come around and it certainly made him realise just how much he missed them. He always had to make sure that he had the night of the full moon off and if he had to work the following day then he always made sure he didn’t start too early but other than that he tried to make sure that he was around when he was needed. He didn’t have commitments like some of the other doctors did, he didn’t have a girlfriend or kids who needed him and that meant that he normally ended up covering for his colleagues when they needed to change a shift. He had his siblings to look out for and he had Brady and the pack to think about but that was different. Julian had realised a long time ago that he wanted to become a doctor and he knew that he was making a difference but he also knew that he needed to start making sure that he had more time for a personal life as well. For far too long his life had been all about work and that was what had needed to happen while he’d progressed his career but now he was getting older and he knew that he wanted more out of life so it was time to start making a change, no matter how difficult that might be. He had made sure he’d had some time off over Christmas to spend with his family but he had already started back at work and he knew that he would most likely get called in on New Year’s so that was something that he definitely wasn’t looking forward to. It was normally chaos around that time and there was a part of him that thought that it might be his turn to call in a favour for a change but he knew that he would want a good reason to do that so it wasn’t something he had done just yet. As it was he’d agreed to catch up with Brady over lunch but by the time Julian got to the garage to pick his friend up, Brady was up to his eyes in jobs that had just come in and he couldn’t get away. Shrugging it off, Julian promised that they would catch up another time before heading off on his own. He could see that the Grill and Diner were both busy, everyone making the most of the time between Christmas and New Year’s it seemed, so he found himself heading in the direction of the coffee shop instead. He didn’t tend to spend as much time there as he did the Grill but it was good enough when the Grill was busy and he was hungry so it would have to do. Joining the queue, Julian placed his order and took his coffee, offering the barista a smile as she promised that his food would be brought over when it was ready if he wanted to go and find a table. Julian was lucky to find that one was just becoming available as he rounded a corner, the only empty table in the place it seemed, and he quickly claimed it before anyone else could. Sitting down in one of the chairs, he took a sip of his coffee and was scrolling through his phone when he heard a familiar voice and he looked up to find Rowan standing before him. “Hi,” he said, setting his phone aside and offering her a smile. “You mean did my brother eat them all before I got home?” he chuckled. “No he didn’t, he’s a good kid. He saved them for when I got back and I shared them with the family,” he admitted as he took another sip of his drink. “You really didn’t have to do that but thank you. It was very kind of you,” he said sincerely. “You’re welcome to sit down, if you’d like.”ROWAN BISHOP

Sticking with a life on the road after her parents had died had probably kept her sane. The travelling, the constant work, the training that Ingrid had pushed her into, it had taken her mind off of what had happened. It gave her a different sort of focus and for that Rowan was going to be eternally grateful. Her parents had been peaceful people, happy to travel the world, carrying the message of peace with them instead of sticking to their packs. Forget territories, they’d seen the world as theirs and she’d wanted to keep all of that up when they were no longer with her. Rowan wasn’t sure she could say her life had been peaceful since then, but every time she was forced to use the training Ingrid and her people had put her through it had been with the intent to save another life. She supposed as long as she held onto that belief she was still following in their footsteps.
In Julian she had seen a man trying to do the same. He hadn’t needed to talk to her that day at the hospital, but he’d taken the time to help with the vending machine and his reassurances afterwards. Maybe any doctor in the place would’ve done it if they hadn’t been called away, but it hadn’t been anybody else that day, it had been him. Seeing it as a step beyond what he’d had to do, she’d tracked him down. The cookies had been intentional, a thank you that had hopefully been passed along. She’d have left it there, but as she so often did in this town she’d found herself facing someone who she’d met in passing again. It should have come as such a surprise when Mystic Falls was such a tiny spot on the map.
Rowan grinned as she stopped by the side of his table, the one she’d about to snatch in the busy room, nodding to him as he answered her question. ”That was what was on my mind,” she admitted. ”That was good of him, and kind of you. He was sweet enough not to tell me that stopping by was stepping over the line.” He’d been polite and honest, a combination she always appreciated. In her line of work there was too much subterfuge for her tastes sometimes. Everything was a secret, locked down by a non-disclosure agreement. For someone who’d always been so open with her emotions it had taken some getting used to.
Lifting her cup to her lips Rowan sipped at her coffee. With the three shots it was strong, but undoubtedly her system would burn through it rapidly. Unlike some of the operatives, she couldn’t just cling on to coffee all day and trust it to keep her going. For now it was just the perfect accompaniment to lunch, a little buzz that she could feel in chest as Julian thanked her. Rowan gestured to him with her cup. [”You’re welcome. You went out of your way for me that day, I wanted to show you how much it was appreciated. Thanks.” Dipping her head, flashing him a grateful smile, she settled into the seat opposite him. ”You’re not working today?” Like hers, she imagined Julian’s schedule wasn’t a settled 9 to 5. Most people didn’t understand what it was like to have to rush out in the middle of the night for an emergency or to work twelve days straight.

Julian had grown up in Mystic Falls and the truth was that the closest he’d come to moving away was when he had gone to college in New Orleans for a few years. He had done it so he could go to the same school as his best friends and he didn’t regret it but the truth was that it just hadn’t been the same after Brady disappeared and then Emily later did the same. He’d had other friends and his studies had kept him busy but it hadn’t been the same without them. He had always known that he would return to Mystic Falls sooner or later but after losing the two of them he had decided to transfer schools and return home where he belonged. He had finished his education there and made it through his residency and in the end he had been reunited with his best friend but it easily could have worked out differently. Still, Mystic Falls had always been Julian’s home and he knew deep down that it always would be. His brother and sister had been experimented on by the Dread Doctors while they were living there which had definitely clouded things considerably but at the end of the day some members of Brady’s pack had been taken from New Orleans and experimented on and from what Dec had told him the same was true of people from Beacon Hills as well. Nowhere seemed safe from them so Julian knew that it could have still happened regardless of where they had ended up so he knew that wasn’t going to change his mind about the town. It was always going to be dangerous to live there but for those who were a part of the supernatural world, Julian was pretty sure that it would be the same anywhere so it wouldn’t make much of a difference. Instead all they could do was try and make the best of it and that was what Julian was trying to do. Work had a habit of keeping him busy and he knew that was to be expected given his profession but he tried to make the most of days off when they came along. He knew that outside of his family and pack he didn’t tend to have much of a social life these days and that was something that Julian knew he needed to change but for now that was a problem for another day. “I thought so,” he chuckled as Rowan confirmed that she had thought Dec would have eaten all of the cookies before he got home. Had it been anyone else then he knew there was a chance they might have eaten all of the evidence but he’d always shared everything he had with his brother and Dec hadn’t made him go without. “It’s what we do, we always look out for each other,” Julian said, a smile touching his lips as he shrugged. He and Dec were the only boys and that had resulted in them growing close despite the age difference but Julian never would have kept them from his parents or sisters either. “It was a surprise to find out you’d dropped by but it was a good one,” he assured her. “I’m only sorry I missed you.” It had left him wondering whether he would get the chance to see Rowan again and thank her in person or not but thankfully Mystic Falls was a small town. Taking a sip of his drink, he shook his head as Rowan said that he’d gone out of his way for her that day. “It wasn’t out of my way at all, I know how temperamental those vending machines can be,” Julian assured her. He saw it day after day and he had been glad he was passing by at the right time. As she asked if he wasn’t working today, Julian shook his head. “I have the day off today but knowing my luck I might still end up getting called in,” he shrugged. “I was meant to be having lunch with a friend but he’s up to his eyes in work and had to cancel so your timing couldn’t be better.”ROWAN BISHOP

Her grandparents would have taken her in. Those brief trips they’d taken home had shown her that her parents hadn’t spent their lives wandering around because they were trying to escape their families. They were just happier on the road, living free. In the end that way of life had killed them, but the only people to blame for that had been the hunters who had slaughtered them. Ingrid had been the one to make her see that in the end. By the time she could have gone home to spent what was left of her childhood with her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, she’d bonded with Ingrid. Maybe that had cost her something. She could’ve ended up like Julian, with family all around. Instead her family had become the other operatives, Ingrid becoming a sort of mother figure, one that was nothing like her birth mother. Seeing what Julian had here brought back the questions over whether she’d down the right thing. It was too late to change it now, all she could do was enjoy the little view of it that she’d gotten.
She chuckled lightly in an echo of his laughter, her smile tugging at her lips. Declan was a good little brother, and she imagined he’d say the same about Julian. ”I guess I underestimated him a little,” she murmured. ”It sounds like your family’s incredible close. Is it just the two of you?” There’d been a thousand questions popping up in her head at the house that day, but it had felt rude to start prying when she’d only met Julian the once.
Rowan felt warmth spread through her chest as Julian assured her that it had been a good surprise to find that she’d dropped by the house. Part of her had worried it was taking a step too far. ”I’m glad,” she said softly. ”I wish my timing had been a little better too. Unfortunately I can’t always predict when I’m gonna be able to get away from work. I had to grab the opportunity and … well, at least I found your brother home instead of having to leave them on the doorstep.” That had been a blessing. She’d been able to leave an explanation with Declan at least and had seen a little more of his brother through Dec’s eyes.
Letting out a soft sound as Julian brushed off what he’d done for her that day, Rowan shook her head. It would’ve been a hundred times harder for her without his reassurance … and the coffee. He’d done a good deed and she’d wanted to repay it. ”It wasn’t just the vending machine,” she told him. Rowan tapped her fingers lightly against the cup. ”I was spiralling over my coworker and you pulled me out of that. I really appreciated it.” It had been the sort of support she only usually got from Ingrid and her boss hadn’t been there right then. Slowly, Rowan grinned at him as he admitted he was practically on call. ”That sounds like my job. I’m practically on call 24-7, it’s not easy.” Especially when lives were in the balance. Her smile brightened, the thought that her timing had been better this time pleasing her. ”I guess I got really lucky this time around. His loss is my gain. What line of work is he in?” Practically everybody she could call a friend worked for Ingrid. It made socialising a little easier, but it was also pretty isolating. Staying in Mystic Falls had started to change that, thankfully.

Julian had always known that he was lucky when it came to the family he was born into, there was a time when his older and younger sister used to gang up on him a lot but he still loved them and when it came to his family there wasn’t anything that he wouldn’t do for them. Moving to New Orleans to go to college had been tough but he had honestly believed that it was worth it to stay close to his friends. He hadn’t wanted to grow apart from Brady and Emily after they had grown up together and the two of them had decided to go to college there so it had been an easy decision to make even if he had ended up missing his family a lot more than he had ever thought that he would. After Brady and the others were abducted during a trip Julian should have been on as well and Emily took off, he had decided to move back to Mystic Falls to finish his education and he had stayed there ever since. He’d had the best of both worlds ever since Brady and the pack had moved to town and that was something that Julian knew better than to take for granted. “It’s alright, you’re secret’s safe with me,” Julian chuckled, knowing that he definitely wasn’t going to tell Dec that Rowan had underestimated him. “We’ve had to be, my family has lived in Mystic Falls for a long time but there aren’t a lot of us left,” he admitted. His mom and dad had both had siblings but they had been killed by hunters years before. They hadn’t been living in Mystic Falls at the time so those hunters had never bothered Julian or his family but he knew that his parents still felt their loss every day. “I still live with my parents which probably sounds strange at my age but with the hours I work there isn’t much point in paying for an apartment I won’t get to spend a lot of time in,” he shrugged. “I have a sister who is four years older than me and I always wanted a younger brother like my friends had. Instead I got another sister who is two years younger than me so they used to gang up on me a lot when we were growing up. I was eight when Dec and my youngest sister Amy came along and I guess I’ve always been protective of the two of them. I’ve always tried to look out for them, especially Dec since I didn’t want him being ganged up on like I was,” he explained. He knew that was probably a little too much information considering that he didn’t really know Rowan but she had asked and it had only seemed right to give her an honest answer. “How about you, do you have any siblings?” he asked, unable to deny that he was curious. “It was definitely appreciated and I’m glad we’ve run into each other now so I could say thank you in person,” Julian admitted. He hadn’t expected Rowan to do something like that for him but the truth was that it had meant a lot. As Rowan said she had been spiralling over her co-worker and he’d pulled her out of that, Julian felt a smile form on his face. “Honestly, it was nothing. Believe it or not I’ve seen people a lot worse than that when they’d spiralled,” he assured her. “I’m glad I was able to help though.” He didn’t know much about Rowan but there was something about her that he liked and he had hated seeing her like that at the hospital. He meant it when he had seen a lot worse, though, and he hoped she knew that. “I bet. Security doesn’t give you much downtime either, huh?” he asked, remembering that Rowan had told him what she did while they were at the hospital. “I’ll take that as a compliment,” Julian chuckled as Rowan spoke again. “He’s a mechanic, he owns the local garage,” Julian explained, not sure whether Rowan had crossed paths with Brady before or not. Over the years that she’d spent with Ingrid’s people, Rowan had found herself slowly getting to know their life stories. Most were like her, or like Ingrid. People without real roots anywhere, people with hard back stories. Some she still didn’t know, even after a decade of working with them. Rowan had always figured it was up to them if they shared with her or not. Coming from parents who hid nothing from people (not even what they were if they thought people could handle it), she was probably came off as a chronic oversharer. For her it was more a matter that she saw nothing to be ashamed of in the way her family lived. It wouldn’t have suited most, the constant moving around, the absolute lack of ties, but even looking back now, she still appreciated the life she’d had. In a way she was still living that sort of life, or had been until Ingrid had decided to put some roots down here, where her own family had settled in a way. It was a first for her, but Rowan could see the appeal to it. This sort of a life wasn’t so bad after all, especially when you had your whole family around you.
It seemed as though that had happened with Julian. She’d gone to his family home, met his little brother. Rowan supposed it would’ve been like that if she’d knocked on half the doors in town. People who’d lived here a long time had families, whole generations who’d been born and grown up here. Rowan smiled appreciatively at Julian. ”I suppose I could say the same, although there isn’t really anywhere I think my family’s settled anymore.” Her grandparents might still have been alive, her aunts and uncles, cousins maybe, still settled in their town, but she knew that her place wouldn’t have been with them. Shaking her head at Julian, Rowan tried to cut off his thought that living his parents was weird. ”It’s not strange,” she assured him. ”If I hadn’t lost my parents I probably still would’ve been doing the same.” And she’d have been in a very different place now. She let out a low whistle as he explained how many siblings she had. ”It sounds like you’ve got a pretty full house between them. I’m sure they appreciate you looking out for them too.” Rowan’s smile dimmed a little as she shook her head again. ”Nope, it’s just me. I have cousins out there somewhere, but it was always just me, my mom and my dad.” Until the hunters had put the end to that.
”I’m glad we could both do that now,” Rowan told him honestly. ”You were there at a tough time for me and that deserved the thanks.” Cookies had definitely seemed the least she could do after Julian had been so reassuring at the hospital. Given the sort of work Ingrid’s people did, there was a chance they’d end up back at the hospital at some point. Not all of them were the sort of supernatural that healed in an instant. Rowan took a sip from her mug and then chuckled lightly. ”I think I’ll take that as a compliment. Part of our training is keeping cool in tough circumstances and I definitely feel like I wasn’t managing that.” By the morning she’d felt steadier, ready to throw herself back into work, but for a while that night, she’d felt like she could flip over into full on panic. Settling back, with her mug still in her hands, Rowan nodded. ”Very little,” she agreed. ”Usually if I’m not working, then I’m on call and even in Mystic Falls things get crazy more than you’d think.” Especially with all the supernatural trouble here. She smiled at Julian, tilting her head. ”You should, it was definitely one. Wait, I think I met him. Is his name Brady?” It shouldn’t have surprised her that in a town this smile her white knights would know one another.

There were plenty of people who had been eager to leave Mystic Falls behind the moment they graduated from high school. A lot of the friends Julian had had back then had moved away and never looked back but it had never been like that for him. He had gone to college in New Orleans because that was where Brady and some of his friends had decided to go to college but after Brady and the others were captured and held hostage in Ecuador it just hadn’t been the same without them so Julian had transferred to Whitmore and returned home. He had always known that he would never wanted to be away from his family for too long, he had always had a really good relationship with them and it had been difficult being in a different state to them but he had still found himself wishing that he could have returned home under better circumstances. He had always known that he would head home provided he could get a job at the hospital in Mystic Falls after he finished med school but as it was transferring to Whitmore had given him the chance to do his training at the hospital and he had been there ever since. Mystic Falls had always been his home and it had felt even more so after Brady escaped and decided to move his family and pack there after things went downhill in New Orleans. That was one of the things that Julian hadn’t liked while he was living there, tensions had always run pretty high and given that he was born a weretiger those around him had often tried drawing him into the conflict. Back then he’d had to hide what he was from Brady but now his best friend had triggered his werewolf curse so there weren’t any more secrets between them now. It felt good having all the people he cared about in Mystic Falls now as it meant that he didn’t have to choose between being a son and brother and being a friend. His work always kept him busy but he still managed to see the people who mattered to him quite often and that meant the world to him. He hadn’t expected Rowan to end up tracking him down so she could thank him for the help he had given her, it hadn’t seemed like anything out of the ordinary to him at all but apparently it had meant a lot to her and he was glad about that. “Really? That’s actually quite sad,” Julian admitted. He knew that it was that way for some families and perhaps there were times that he’d taken the fact that his family had lived in Mystic Falls for generations for granted but he knew that he wasn’t going to do that again. “I’m glad you think so,” he said, a smile touching his lips as Rowan said it wasn’t strange that he still lived with his parents. He really hadn’t seen the point in getting his own place when he wouldn’t spend much time there and he got along with his family so it worked for all of them. “It’s good to know I’m not the only one,” he admitted as Rowan said that she probably would have been living with her parents if she hadn’t lost them. “I’m sorry for your loss though,” he added gently. That couldn’t have been easy but Rowan seemed to be doing alright now and that was definitely a good thing. As she said his siblings were probably glad that he was looking out for them, Julian couldn’t help but laugh. “I know Dec appreciates it and Amy does too but I’m not so sure my other two sisters would agree,” he chuckled. He always tried looking out for them as well but they didn’t seem to like it quite so much these days. “How did you find it being an only child?” he asked, unable to deny that he was curious. Some of his friends didn’t have any siblings and they’d had mixed feelings about it so he was curious as to how Rowan felt about it. “I can’t imagine growing up without my siblings around, even with my sisters ganging up on me all the time.” Family meant the world to him and it always had done. “So am I,” Julian admitted as Rowan said she was glad they could both say thank you in person now. As she said he was there during a tough time for her, a half smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Well, if you ever need someone again just let me know,” he offered. It really hadn’t seemed like anything out of the ordinary to be there for Rowan when she’d needed him but from her reaction he wasn’t sure that there were a lot of people in her life that would have done the same thing so he knew that he wouldn’t hesitate in being there for her again if she needed him. “It was definitely a compliment,” he chuckled. “Don’t be too hard on yourself, someone you knew was badly injured. Honestly I would have been more worried if you were able to keep your cool in that case.” It was just proof that Rowan had a heart and that wasn’t anything to be ashamed of as far as he was concerned. As she spoke again, Julian couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh, I think I know what you mean pretty well. I’ve lived here all my life other than when I went away to college and things at the hospital can get pretty crazy,” he grinned. Thankfully he always managed to avoid the full moon madness at the hospital but that was because he turned into a tiger with every full moon so he couldn’t exactly tell Rowan that. Julian’s smile returned as Rowan confirmed that what she’d said was a compliment although he couldn’t deny that he was a surprised when she asked about Brady. “That’s right, the two of you have met?” he asked, knowing that it shouldn’t be too surprising considering the hours Brady often worked. “We’ve been best friends since we were kids, he and another friend of ours are actually the reason I went to college in New Orleans,” he explained. He had wanted to be close to Brady and Emily and even though he’d ended up returning home to Mystic Falls when Brady was taken and Emily disappeared without a trace after they kissed, he knew that it had still been the right decision to go. Fear should have driven her home after her parents had died. She’d still been young, but she’d travelled enough with her parents to know how to find transport when she needed it. Life would have been very different if she had. Maybe she’d still be in that little town, surrounded by family instead of out here working almost every hour of every day. Anger had dominated the fear then though and it had been the need to make someone pay for what had happened to her parents that had left her agreeing to go to work for Ingrid. Once she’d started working with Ingrid’s people and she’d realised that she might actually have a talent for preventing others from being hurt, Rowan had known she wouldn’t be able to walk away from it. Maybe it made for a lonely existence sometimes, but in a way she still had a family, it was just one that worked differently to most other people’s. Plus, if she was to walk away now, it would leave Ingrid trying to fill her spot at her right hand and God forbid Luc ended up back there. At that point she might have to come back, just to save him from himself.
The corners of her mouth lifted in an almost sad smile. She still would’ve given up all of this to have her parents back, there was no turning the clock back though. ”My grandparents might still be alive, but I haven’t had any contact them since I was a child. I’m not sure they even know what happened to my parents. I’ve made peace with it.” His words were a balm as the wound in her heart that had never really healed ached faintly. ”Anybody who thinks it’s strange has probably had too easy a life. Not everybody gets to stroll through all those little milestones without pausing along the way.” Those that did probably wouldn’t understand the way she lived her life either. Rowan reached out her hand and settled it over his for a moment, squeezing lightly. ”Thank you,” she said softly. Amusement remained gleaming in her eyes as she settled back. ”Maybe they don’t feel it now, but I’m sure at some point they will. At the time I always wanted another kid around, but now, I think maybe it was for the best. I had all their attention and love. It’s a little selfish, but I think it made me the person I am. Oh, I’m sure they can’t have been that bad.” Laughter rolled out of her, a broad grin creasing her face as she tried to imagine him at the mercy of his sisters.
Both of them might’ve had a twisted path to get to where they were, but those paths had left them in the right place at the right time when they’d run into each other at the hospital. ”I hope I won’t be in the same situation again, but if I am, you’ll definitely be the first person I call,” Rowan promised. People were always going to get hurt in her line of work, but hopefully their track record of it rarely being that bad continued. Her smile softened as she looked at him over the rim of her mug, genuine gratitude in her eyes. ”Thank you,” she told him honestly. Rowan let out a little hum. ”Most of the guys I work with would probably worry you. They’re tough guys, the sort who won’t let a single emotion cross their face if they can help it.” That was a part of the job though, managing to keep your cool, no matter how awful the situation became.
She liked hearing him laugh, she realised as she sipper her coffee and listened to the sound of it. It had a warmth to it that probably drew people to him. ”It sounds as though we’re both pretty much married to our jobs. I don’t imagine you’d swap all that crazy for the world though, would you?” She certainly wasn’t about to swap the job, no matter how much of her life it took up. Hearing that Brady was Julian’s best friend, it felt as though she was destined to be saved by the pair of them, hopefully it wouldn’t end up having to happen a third time. ”He saved my ass too,” Rowan drawled lightly, smiling wryly at him. ”My car broke down just outside of town, he happened to come by and offer some help.” One dark brow rose, it seemed as though the two of them were as close as brothers would’ve been. ”It’s great that the two of you are still so close. Did they decide to go there for college?” College had never been on the cards for her, but she’d watched enough bad late night TV in motel rooms over the years to know that going to college was a big thing for most teens.
