It had been more than a year since that holier-than-thou twat had tried to out him in the Daily, and still there’d been some looks from people as they’d glided through the lobby and into the ballroom space beyond. Sly, skittering little glances that darted away the moment he met their eye, as though having the balls to really look at him was gonna mean he was dragging them off to some dark corner at the rest of the night. This wasn’t the Hotel California – most got to leave here.
”Is this to celebrate the expansion of your hotel?”
The man’s nasal voice cut through the drift of Grey’s thoughts, drawing his gaze back to the hound dog face. He hadn’t take more than a sip of the champagne that he’d handed him since the reporter had pulled him aside to gather some details for the article that would be run about the party in the Daily (more cover slapped over an article that would likely never truly fade from the narrow little minds in this town. Like the stain the darach had left in his blood, the accusations would forever linger. The trick to hiding them was to slap on the gloss, to distract those who tried to look like an expensive magic trick.
”Partly,” Grey admitted, gesturing around the two of them with the glass he’d more than half emptied in the same time. His gaze swept past the thinning pate of hair and over the crowds around them. The glitter didn’t only come from the thousands of lights and miniature crystal snowflakes that had been hung overhead, he’d made sure it was a black tie event and it seemed as though the people of Mystic Falls used any excuse possible to dress up and show off.
”I’ve always liked giving back to my customers at this time of year. We’ve thrown events before in other cities, I thought it was time we did the same here in Mystic Falls. Bring the community in to the Grey Haven, give a little something back to them.” Even if they didn’t deserve it.
His eyes narrowed faintly as he caught sight of Catia’s sisters in the crowd. Lottie had been sent an invitation at least, if Cat had sent the bitchier sister one too, he hadn’t known about it. Grey curled his fingers tighter around his glass, like he could avoid the ghost of Christmas past (the most foul mouthed of the three) from grabbing hold of him in the swirl of attendees and pronouncing him a murderer.
Tonight had taken months of planning, right through the worst of things with Destiny. Days spent going over the plans, adjusting, adding, carving another chunk out of his finances to slap on another layer of glitter. The string quartet had become a small orchestra in one corner of the room, the sound still tastefully muted as it lured people out onto the dance floor. By the time the staff started to clear the buffet away, the noise level would rise beyond where it now slid sharply over his nerves like the bow over the strings of the violins.
Those nasal tones drifted away into a cloud of what he was sure were compliments as he tried to pick Destiny out of the crowd. He’d kept a hand on her for the early portion of the night, the two of them putting on a united front the same way they had at the museum benefit – the happy couple leading the way. At some point, as people had clamoured to talk to him, they’d been drawn apart, leaving him itching to get that contact back.
”I should check on things back stage,” Grey blurted at the reporter as he spotted Destiny glimmering on the edge of a knot of people. The lights sparkled on her the same way they had on her birthday – the fairy dust returning, a bigger lure for him than the music. ”I’ll get that topped up for you too. Enjoy your night.” The half smile he offered the guy drifted off the moment he stepped away, nodding silently to one of the servers to take care of the man’s glass.
Others tried to pull at his attention as he slipped through the crowd, but he brushed each of them off with a polite smile and a determined step. At least after tonight he could practically barricade the doors of the penthouse until after Christmas. The two of them holed up there to celebrate in their own way.
Grey drifted into Destiny’s orbit now, offering those she was talking to the same slick smile. As he slipped an arm around her. ”Sorry, I just need to steal her away for a moment. I hope you’re enjoying your night.” He let out a long breath as he gathered her into a clear spot in one corner of the room, finally feeling the bubble build around him again, keeping others at bay.
”I hope I didn’t disturb anything too important,” he rumbled softly. Grey wrapped both arms around her waist now, his shoulders squirming faintly to rid himself of the feeling of those clawing, grabby hands. So many wanting his attention, wanting a piece of a pie he wasn’t willing to share with anybody but her. ”I just needed a minute.” With her. It didn’t matter that parts of his heart still held the scored marks of Destiny’s bitterness, grief and anger, only that it was the two of them together again, standing against everybody else.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ EVER SINCE GREY’S BIRTHDAY, THINGS HAD BEEN A LITTLE better. Well, they weren’t fighting all the time, at least, and Destiny started to appreciate the little moments with him again. He might not have let it all go completely, but she didn’t either, and… maybe that was okay. Maybe it was part of healing. They’d have this scored on their hearts forever, but at least those hearts would never be apart. Some days, that was easier to say than others, but she knew it was true. It had to be.
And Christmas certainly helped her feel a little better. It was the whole vibe of it. Despite the stress Grey went through to plan this thing (and the second-hand stress she got from supporting him), this was the best time of year. Maybe it’d be a little better if they had Petyr here to celebrate with them, but… she had to be positive. And everyone was in good spirits when it was Christmas time. The cold was permissible, there was twinkly lights on everything, and people were just… generally happier, even if their wallets were empty. And after this party━which was a good thing to help Grey after all the shit JJ had put his business (and name) through━she’d get to spend Christmas with her family. And that was all she’d ever wanted.
She’d spent all of the early part of the party at Grey’s side to welcome everyone, feeling secure with his presence always within arm’s reach, but they’d gotten separated at some point, and she kept thinking of him. When someone touched her bare arm to turn her, she’d thought━for a split second━that it was Grey, before quickly realizing that it was wrong. Not that she was in danger, but that the warmth, the feeling, just wasn’t Grey. She’d turned and found herself disappointed by some people from work that she’d invited, but━despite them not being who she’d been hoping for━she greeted them happily and made them feel welcome. She just wished the next hand on her skin━whether it be the exposed shoulder from her red dress with the crossed neckline, or her arm━would be Grey’s.
It was funny how she could work up such fury and spit it at him like venom, then suddenly meet the cold truth that she couldn’t function for more than an hour without being near him. She missed him. Destiny missed him, and she was tired of feeling stupid about it, since he was probably just on the other side of the room. But she missed his presence, how little she felt in his arms━how safe and taken care of.
It didn’t help that there was some ridiculously beautiful woman here wearing a low-cut dress, who’d laughed every time Grey spoke like he was a fucking stand-up comedian. It was worse that she was important, the daughter (and heir) of somebody with a fuck ton of money, and a big investor in Grey’s line of hotels. The rational part of her brain knew that he didn’t care or want that bitch, but it didn’t stop a bunch of angry feelings from bubbling up in her gut. And to add insult to injury, Destiny had watched that woman approach him after they’d been separated, inserting herself in some conversation Grey was having with someone else. She’d tried not to glare━this chick was probably just being nice, but Destiny hated her. And creating drama wouldn’t help anyone.
When he finally came to her side, Destiny felt him before he arrived. Maybe it was just the way her employees’ (and friends’) eyes lifted above her head as he approached, but Destiny liked to think she just knew. She sank into him without looking, her skin feeling electric everywhere he touched. “Sorry. I’ll see you guys in a bit,” Destiny said without an ounce of remorse━or even a plan to follow through on that promise. She didn’t think Grey had one, either.
Once they were alone━when it was finally just them, and Grey’s arms encapsulated her, and her own slipped around his shoulders━the rest of the party faded into the background. The music was a gentle hum to muddle the voices, but the only sensations that mattered were his hands on her body, and her fingers on his jaw, feeling the roughness around it, then the softer skin by his eyes. The pads of them brushed lightly over his hair.
She watched him squirm slightly━attuned to every movement he made━and aimed to soothe him with her touch, her thumb sweeping below one of his eyes. “Nothing at all,” Destiny mumbled, but he must’ve known that already. Her eyes wanted to skitter behind his head to find the lady in the red dress (with her t*ts hanging out), but it wasn’t important right now. Nothing could pull her from hi━
Destiny’s gaze flicked to the left of his shoulder at a lingering blob of red, and she swore she could see their little bubble pop. That same bitch was looking over at them, smirking, then continuing her trail past them. “Think that dumb bitch wants a minute, too.” She grumbled, her eyes finding his again. Destiny melted a little, blowing out a breath like his touch alone would bleed this feeling out of her. And it did. “Sorry.” Destiny puffed, adding, “Mikayla Whatever with the trust fund,” so Grey knew who she was talking about. As if he didn’t know.
“Did you used to sleep with her or something?” Despite asking, she actually did not want to know. “Or did she just want you to? You━no, sorry. I missed you.” She wanted him closer, but all Destiny could manage was nosing at him, and brushing her lips over his━the gentlest ghost of a kiss.

Glamouring had hidden the scars that Leah had left on his body when she’d failed to put an end to the Maddox line (like she wasn’t the rotten fruit hanging from the lowest branch of that family tree), but it was the thick skin he’d had to develop after that hid the rest of him. At times it felt paper thin, pared down so there was only the thinnest of barriers between him and the rest of the world. Destiny’s hands had covered him then, protecting him the way he did her, but they’d also clawed at him, her hurt clawing its way straight through to the part of him that would scar again.
All that the people in this place saw were the meatiest parts of it. Slabs of muscle and money that made him one of them instead of the thing they would’ve scraped off the sole of their Tom Ford loafers. They schmoozed him hoping for a taste of it, leaving the cloying scent of their desperation behind. Before Mystic Falls he’d have bathed in it, and the blood that would’ve run from the necks of those he’d picked out afterwards. What he’d wanted taken from them, used for the sort of good they wouldn’t have seen if it was tickling their noses like the champagne bubbles. There weren’t gonna be any bodies left in shallow graves around the edges of the parking lot tonight though (age old sacrifices to bless the ground he owned). He’d just slip his skin when the last guests were shown out (probably forcibly since people like this never knew what to go home), the thinnest parts of him left to retreat into the home he’d made with Destiny up at the pinnacle of all of this.
Feeling some patches already turning opaque, tissue paper thin – a bad combination if Catia’s scalpel tongued sister appeared – he’d tried to find his exit away from that feeling. She was glowing in the crowd, his Tinkerbell surrounded by the acolytes of her newspaper staff. Thankfully Hart wasn’t there, he wasn’t sure if he’d have been able to resist shattering the champagne glass in his face if he had been.
Grey breathed a sigh of relief as Destiny melted into him, shields slithering into place like shadows around him, the noise – including Mikayla’s stiletto sharp laugh – dimming with her so close. His smile remained up, aimed at the group until they were out of sight and then he could let it down, his face settling into tired lines only Destiny could see. Dipping his head, he dragged his lips over the delicate arc of one exposed collarbone as Destiny’s arms wrapped around his shoulders. Her fingers were light on his jaw as his head rose again, tracing those lines with the sort of tenderness that had those shields thin enough to see every feeling through like a window to the core of him.
The corners of his mouth lifted, her reassurance appreciated, even if he would’ve dragged her away anyway. ”I’m sure they expected it at some point.” They all had to be familiar with his appearances at the newspaper office now, each one hopefully needling at Hart until he choked on frustration he couldn’t vent on the printed page.
This close up he missed the way Destiny’s attention had flicked awy from him, finding something over his shoulder to focus on. He stiffened, suddenly seeing more than the painted lips he planned on kissing bare later, when it was just the two of them again (well, four with Flower and Berlioz). Grey straightened up faintly, not wanting to turn and look when he felt brittle enough to snap in a place where he could ill afford it. ”Which one?” he asked dryly. The apology spilt out a second before the explanation. ”Baskerville.” His voice flattened even further. She was a Baskerville of the Baskervilles, the ones who’d first settled Virginia. All those generations later they still weren’t letting people forget it.
”No!” There was a sharp edge to his voice that hadn’t been in Destiny’s, but her question had cut all the same. He let out a long breath, his brows furrowing. Her apology whispered over his lips a moment before her mouth did, a ghost of a touch that did little to bleed off the sudden tension. Lifting a hand, he gripped her jaw lightly to lift her eyes back to his. ”You don’t have to be jealous of her. I never would’ve touched her. I never will now. Why would I when I’ve got you?” Doubts crept in though, insidious voices in your ear that it was hard to block out when so much had already gone wrong.
Glancing over his shoulder again, Grey cursed under his breath. He could see Mikayla working her way in this direction, with the determination of an idiot who couldn’t see what was right under her nose. Dropping his hand to peel one of Destiny’s from around his shoulders, Grey started away down the hallway. Any of the rooms available for guest use had been left with the doors open, he went through one that was closed, shutting it pointedly behind him before he flicked the lock. He huffed out a breath as he backed Destiny towards the long table that stretched down the middle of the meeting room. His hands were already slipping down to cradle her hips. ”You’re the only one,” he said hoarsely. ”Everybody else out there could go up in a puff of smoke and I wouldn’t care. This is my hotel, my home, and you’re the only woman who’s ever mattered. You understand?” His eyes were glittering bright as he kissed her, this time far less ephemeral. A hot press of lips, his tongue already parting them to slip inside, to claim her.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT ‘TIL MIKAYLA WEDGED HER way into it. Maybe they’d been separated for a while, but they were back together again; Destiny had him, and all of the other shit went away. The party, the sacrifices━the fact that they’d learned it might be easier to kill Leah than they’d ever expected. It didn’t matter, not now.
And then the bubble burst, and Destiny wondered why she’d ever thought they could keep it up for long. There was always someone working their way between them, whether it was his fucking sister, this Mikayla bitch, or some nameless sacrifice. She didn’t have the energy to be angry about it anymore; Destiny just felt like she had to accept it. Nobody would let them be happy for long.
The moment she called attention to the woman, though, Destiny regretted it. One hand shifted to Grey’s collarbone like she could reach for his face in time to stop him from looking, like she could reverse this and pretend she hadn’t said anything at all, but it was too late. He was looking, and Destiny felt a frown pulling at her lips as she apologized. She kept feeling bad about it until Grey mentioned her last name, and then another wave of bitterness bled over her. She couldn’t help it. She asked, even if she didn’t want to know.
Grey’s reaction forced her brows up, though, blue eyes skittering over his lips, then his eyes, a quick patter of anxiety bursting in her chest. She didn’t mean to make him upset, but the way he responded would’ve been suspicious if she didn’t know him so well. Destiny apologized, kissing him gently, though his hand was on her jaw before she could press in further.
Her eyes found his dutifully, all her attention on Grey, not daring to look over his shoulder again. A gentle smile touched her lips at his reassurance, though she could’ve come up with a million answers to his question, none of which she wanted to divulge now.
(Most consisted of how she’d be another way for him to climb the ladder, or how Mikayla was already on a level similar to his, or the fact that she’d probably be able to give him the baby he deserved.)
In a moment they were moving, and Destiny didn’t argue as he peeled away, but only because his hand was still in hers. She didn’t even look back to flash a smug look at Mikayla, finding that it didn’t matter to her, not when she had everything she needed.
Destiny couldn’t help the bubble of laughter that floated up from the pit of her stomach as they moved through the hallway, giddy over the fact that they’d just abandoned the party they were supposed to be hosting to find a quiet space together. It was like she was finally getting all the little experiences she should’ve had before, dragged into a dark space because they couldn’t keep their hands off of each other, not because he wanted to keep her away from everyone else.
She grinned up at him as they piled into the empty room, a meeting space instead of the ground-level suites around it. It was dark, but she could still find the outline of the face, and the features she’d studied for hours with her eyes, hands and lips. She didn’t need any aid to see him crystal clear, or watch the way his eyes twinkled in the moonlight spilling in from behind them. It bathed everything in deep blue, like an ocean━a statement about the depths of their love, or how they were always sinking together.
Her hands curled around his arms, nails pressed into his triceps as she backed up with him, letting Grey guide her, effectively blind by the way she stared at his face. His first profession forced a soft sound to escape from her, her focus so intense that she couldn’t smile at him.
Destiny only stopped walking when her backside pressed against the table’s edge, and she kissed him as his mouth collided with hers, hot and possessive, her lips parting for him to take her━take everything he wanted. She didn’t have a moment to respond to him, but when the solid edge dug unforgivingly into her ass as she leaned back, trying to guide him onto her, she thought about the party she’d spent hours planning, about the people that were there for them. The ones who were supposed to help him move forward despite the wrench JJ’s article had thrown into things.
“Grey,” She whispered, not strong enough to break away from him completely, her lips still brushing on his, “I love you.” She hummed, “I want you. But we… we can’t,” Destiny laughed breathlessly, “All those people are waiting for us, we gotta… get back,” She didn’t want to, but letting him take her in a meeting room a few steps from where more than a hundred people had gathered for them seemed crazy.

Thick, dark hair, pretty blue eyes and a fat wallet. Mikayla hadn’t seen anything more in Grey Maddox than what she’d wanted to see. Her cloyingly sweet smile would’ve melted away the moment he’d hit her, that botoxed face going as slack as it could. The newspapers would’ve been packed with stories about her disappearance, the party girl finally finding the trouble she’d courted for years. It wouldn’t have given him an ounce of power to do it, but when your patience was rubbed that thin, it stopped mattering. With Destiny she’d seen into him from the start. Maybe the view was obscured sometimes, what he felt hidden behind the granite walls he’d spent years building up to stop anybody from tearing him apart again, not even the words slipping past them. Hers were the hands on those blocks, the ones that could tear them down and hold him together all at one time. He tried to do the same, fingers, lips, promises trailed over the scars that life had left on her. A balm for the uncertainty and fear that could hollow both of them. It wasn’t jealousy that had drawn her attention to Mikayla, it was doubt in herself, those deep stamped fears – some of which he’d caused – biting at the back of her mind. The blonde on the night they’d lost Petyr had been the last he’d ever put above her again. He’d burn every bridge he had in this place to make sure she knew it. Let the assholes drink the place dry and grumble about their host’s rudeness. There were always more to fill the space they’d leave if they turned their back on him. There would never be another Destiny. His lips curved up into one of those rare smiles as she laughed in the tight confines of the hallway. Light spilled from the sound the same way it did from her smile, filling him, heating him from the inside to stoke the need he always had for her. Without the blip of Mikayla he might’ve continued to stoke it all night, letting it pour into Destiny once they shut the party down and slipped back upstairs. That wasn’t the way it was ending through. Destiny’s smile shone in the dim light, her hands curling around his arms as he guided her across the room. His Tinkerbell, happy again, thank God. ”Don’t ever forget what you are to me,” he whispered hoarsely. The fabric of her dress crinkled against his fingers, smooth and cool, a contrast to the warmth of the skin he found beneath as he palmed her thighs. Her mouth was hot under his, need growing supernova bright in all the spots where they connected. Breathing deeply, each exhalation ragged, Grey looked down at her as she leaned back. His hands slid further under her thighs, drawing her hips against him so she could feel what she did to him – what only she could do to him. ”I love you too,” he managed hoarsely, his teeth nipping lightly at her lower lip before she started to try and cut him off. Dark brows rose, amusement pulling at his mouth. Had she missed him saying this was his place? ”We can. They can’t tell me what to do here. Let them wait, they can peel their lips off of my arse for a while and kiss each other’s instead. The only person in here I care about is you.” And he hadn’t said it enough. He needed to. No holding the words back anymore. She was going to hear them echoing in her ears and in her heart when they were done and every day from them on out. Dragging his lips down to the open neck of her dress, Grey pressed a kiss into the notch of her collarbones, then down to the shadowed line between her breasts. Words were pressed into the soft, milky skin plumped up by the red silk. ”You’re all I can think about when I’m with them,” he panted hoarsely. ”Your taste. Your scent. The little gasps you take right before I drive you over the edge. I sit in those meetings and I don’t hear a word they say because it’s always how much I need you. Do you think about me right here? Between your thighs? On my knees for you?” The carpet was soft against his knees as he sank down to them. Destiny’s dress was pushed up her thighs high enough for him to trail his mouth from her knee up to the spot where his hands gripped her thighs. One let go, his mouth taking its spot as he dug into the pocket of his pants. ”It’s where I’ll always be for you. Forever, Destiny. I’ll never stop loving you, I’ll never stop needing you so much I can barely breathe. Will you have me? Destiny, will you give me this lifetime and all of the ones that came after?” He hadn’t planned on saying the words tonight, but they’d been there in his mind for months. Before he’d come home to find she’d gone against him, before they’d made up, before Leah had stolen away the light that had filled the centre of their life. From the moment he’d realised that he couldn’t imagine his life without her. When she was safe finally, when Leah was dead and the druid was gone, but there was no guarantee of that. Now was the time to flip open the box he drawn out, to let the light reflect off of the ring he’d bought – the centre stone for Petyr, the smaller ones either side for the two of them, orbiting around the gift that they hadn’t entirely lost, not even now. As long as he had Destiny, he had everything, including their son.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ MAYBE PART OF HER JUST WANTED HIM TO GIVE HER A firmer statement, something that said they were going to be here whether everyone else liked it or not, and he didn’t disappoint. Destiny smiled, the joke forming in her mind about ‘where his lips would be’ never making it into the air as she opened her mouth for him, hands gripping Grey to drag him in, her agreement obvious in the action.
They went to his hair as he kissed down her neck, her mouth going dry as she breathed open-mouthed into the quiet, dark room, moaning his name as he spoke. “Always,” She croaked, swallowing thickly after the word came out crackled, her mouth feeling like she’d swallowed sand. But it was so, so good. He always made her feel good.
Destiny watched him as he went lower, one hand shifting to the table to keep her steady, the other still buried in his dark hair. She parted her legs to make room for him, quiet moans and gasps harmonizing with his kisses, his words━everything was a little cloudy, but they slowly started to permeate towards the end, and she didn’t realize he was digging in his pocket until he pulled something out of it.
Her eyes floated to the box he’d produced, opened━the ring sitting inside it. His words had seemed too serious to fit with what she thought they were doing, and she was right. He was… he was fucking proposing to her. Her eyes jumped from the beautiful ring━the one that looked like a glittering snowflake━to his own, tears filling her vision. The hand supporting her on the table━useless now that she was ramrod straight━went to cover her mouth as she gaped at him.
She’d always thought that maybe this was an unachievable dream, a happy ending she’d never get, and maybe that was okay. As long as she got to spend the rest of her life with Grey, she didn’t care if they were legally tied together or not. But this was so much more━it was a declaration that he did want this with her. And she knew that, of course, but… the action went above and beyond.
Part of her wanted to double-check with him━just make sure this was something he wanted. That he understood what it meant━being tied to her forever. Maybe never having a baby of their own, or never getting to move past the pain of losing Petyr.
She couldn’t say it, though. She couldn’t ruin this moment with her insecurities, especially not when she knew what he’d say.
“Of course,” Destiny practically whimpered, the hand in his hair slipping down to cradle his face, just below his ear. “I want… I want it all with you, Grey. Forever. I love you so much,” She sniffled, dragging her hand away from her mouth so he could put the ring on her.
She watched it again, tears sliding down her cheeks, and she laughed wetly, incredulously, like she couldn’t believe any of this was happening. “It’s so beautiful.” She sniffled, “I love you,” Destiny said again, surging forward to kiss him, pouring all her love and excitement into it. “Did you make me plan my own engagement party?” Destiny laughed, though she knew if this was their real engagement party, half of these people wouldn’t be here. God, they’d really turned into hermits together, hadn’t they? It didn’t matter━she loved it. And now she had a lifetime of hermit-ing with him to look forward to… and all the other things they’d get up to, the things she couldn’t wait for.

The Grey Haven couldn’t have been further from the shitty little cottage he’d grown up in. Like he’d dragged himself up from the hovel, the same way he had from that fucking lane and the crumpled body. Each step up another fuck you to the pack and the druids lurking out there, waiting to steal everything away from him. Greyson Maddox would not go the same way his father had. Madness wouldn’t rot his mind or steal all he had left from him before it finally killed him.
In the end its top floor had become their sanctuary. Business humming along beneath them, all the rich, empty headed assholes completely unaware of what had come on here, not feeling an ounce of the grief that had wrapped them up like a shroud. If it came to it he’d have given it all up, thrown every single one of them out and locked the doors, turning it a monument for their son, one that he and Destiny would grow old in. Together.
God, she didn’t know yet had how that always would hit, what it meant. Grey felt it like a chain, pulling tight between his heart and the box in his pocket. There’d been so many moments when it felt like their pasts and their grief would tear them so far apart they would never find their way back to here. He could stretch out a hand, trying to stop Destiny from drifting away from, but it wasn’t enough. They had to work for it, he had to say the words that would erase her fears and make it clear that there was nobody more important than her and never would be.
Later the words would be pressed where he had been heading, the promise to stamp their love into every inch of his hotel not just hot air, but for now he had to say them aloud. The taste of her skin was still on his lips as they formed the words, her fingers in his hair, as though he’d need to be anchored there. ”I can’t live without you,” he added hoarsely as her other hand came up to cover her mouth, tear filled eyes meeting his – admittedly a little misty. ”I should have done this before, made it clear how my entire future is you.” How it would’ve been them if it wasn’t for Leah trying to carve away his heart bit by bit since she’d missed tearing it out that first time. Fear had locked the words in his throat then, but not now.
Grey swallowed hard, Destiny’s silence making it harder and harder to swallow. It felt as though a bubble was expanding there, threatening to send more words, pleas out, anything to hear the words he desperately wanted her to say. Whatever the future held, he could only face it with her. Destiny’s light now the centre of his life, holding all of that darkness at bay.
Relief spilled out on a watery breath. Grey turned his head as Destiny’s hand slipped down to settle on his face, pressing his lips against her wrist. ”I love you too,” he breathed. Nothing could ever change that. ”Whatever comes we handle it together. Mr and Mrs Maddox.” His grin was back, skimming over Destiny’s knuckles before the ring was slipped onto her finger.
”Hey,” he breathed softly as she threw herself into him. His arms caught her around the waist, drawing her into him as she kissed him. Grey sensed all the emotion that poured from it, feeling drunk on it by the time he dragged his mouth from hers, up to her temple. He chuckled into that tender skin before he pressed a kiss there too. ”Tonight wasn’t all about this, but when I brought you in here it felt like the right time. We’ll celebrate, on our own, with the people who mean something to us. Not all of them.” They still didn’t matter, even if they’d pretend to when they went out there that they did.
His mouth found her throat again, capturing her pulse against his lips. Eventually one of them would come looking for them, but they could wait on the other side of that door for an eternity. He had his own celebrations going on, the consummation that was meant to come after the next ring was added to Destiny’s left hand. The physical version of what they’d already said to one another. A joining of hearts, of bodies, a promise made to the future they’d have together. Starting it, Grey pressed a kiss over Destiny’s heart.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ MY ENTIRE FUTURE IS YOU. DESTINY’S HEART swelled with the proclamation, and though she should’ve known it already, it didn’t make it any less special to hear. This was the kind of thing they’d both need to hear for the rest of their lives, and Destiny was happy she’d found someone who knew how she wanted to be loved━she was even happier that she could give Grey the same kind of reassurance. He’d had it even less than she did as a child, but she knew what it was like to have that insecurity lingering there, causing you to be unsure no matter how much you tried to convince yourself out of it.
They were going to get married. She let out a wet laugh as he said it, her new title, grinning broadly. “Mrs. Maddox.” Destiny said, wiggling her fingers to feel the new weight on one before she practically tossed herself at him, attaching her mouth to his.
“You mean you didn’t spend months wringing your hands and planning how you were gonna propose?” Destiny teased, nuzzling into Grey, her arms circling his shoulders, hands clasped together, hanging between his shoulder blades.
She sighed softly as his mouth found her neck, head tilting to allow him more space to keep that thrum of electricity sliding through her. Her hands flattened on his shoulder blades, pressing Grey’s broad chest into hers, trying to get him impossibly closer. She leaned back, grinning as her hand slid over the fabric covering his skin━at the feeling of the band scraping over it. “I love you,” She whispered again, pushing Grey’s jacket off his shoulders, then shrugging off her dress until the hem drooped below her chest, leaving her blooming over the top of it. Her fingers went to his dress pants next, knowing they didn’t have enough time to strip completely.

By the time they returned to the party, Destiny couldn’t stop smiling━couldn’t stop looking at Grey━as they walked back in, her hand clasped in his. She’d smoothed out her hair and fixed her makeup and dress in her phone’s camera before they came back, using her fingers to fix Grey’s hair, too━and wipe the smear of lipstick from his mouth.
She didn’t even see Mikayla Whatever-ville approach until she was in front of them, making some comment about how they disappeared that Destiny only half-heard. She laughed it off, no longer finding it in herself to be jealous, not after the high of their engagement. She turned into Grey, her free hand coming up to settle on his chest, secretly dipping her fingers onto his dress shirt, between the buttons, feeling his sternum, solid under her touch.
“We had… something to discuss.” Destiny giggled. Her excuse was lame, but it didn’t matter when Mikayla saw the ring glittering on her finger━they were too far gone by the time she gasped.
“Oh my God! Is that a ring? You didn’t have that on before, I would’ve noticed.”
I bet you would’ve. Destiny sneered in her head, blue eyes cutting sideways to Mikayla’s stupid, stuck-up face. Apparently, if she was gonna fully “lose” her chance to get at Destiny’s man, she was gonna announce it to the whole fucking party.
Mikayla turned, grabbing a random piece of cutlery on a nearby table to tap against her glass. “Everyone, everyone! I just wanted you all to know… that our hosts just got engaged! An impromptu engagement party! Congratulations to the happy couple!”
Destiny swore she saw her sneering. Her cheeks heated, and she smiled through the attention, eyes wandering back up to Grey. She wouldn’t mind it as much as he did, but she hoped he wouldn’t be too embarrassed. Everyone was gonna find out either way. She whispered her profession to Grey again, then went on her toes to kiss him. When she settled, she leaned into his side, and waded her way into the crowd of people, issuing ‘thank yous’ left and right. She had to find Lottie ASAP and let her know that this was a total surprise. Also to gush about how pretty her ring was.
