━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ NOT ONLY DID ELIAS FEEL THE WEIGHT OF EVERY single soul walking the earth, but he felt responsible for them. He knew when each would die, and sent his reapers to do his bidding whenever he was unable. He wanted to be there for all of the ones he was needed for, however. Especially because it seemed that keeping the balance was important to nobody except for him.
Elias strolled slowly through Death’s Library, his library, his fingertips grazing the books he already knew word for word. With all of this came immense power, and the sudden realization of everything he hadn’t known before━everything that was beyond even a reaper’s knowledge. His staff knew nothing, and while that had been painfully obvious before, he could actually do something about it now.
He knew they must’ve felt a shift. They were idiots, but they weren’t so oblivious. They just didn’t know who was their new boss, and Elias couldn’t wait to show them. He’d run a tight ship, and things around here would change.
Striding to the corner, where there was an elevated seating area, Elias went up the two narrow steps, then lowered himself onto what must’ve been Death’s reading chair of sorts. He wondered, briefly, if the last one had installed it, or if it’d been here since the beginning. Elias settled into the cushioned seat, then called them.
As soon as they all arrived, he leaned into one arm of the chair, his gaze passing over each of their faces. “I assume you all felt a shift.” He began, “This shouldn’t be news, but our last leader was useless. He was allowing things to happen that should never have gone unpunished. He was also absent when we needed him most.” The edges of Elias’ lips began to tip up in the most subtle form of a smirk. “So, I replaced him. I am now Death.” He shifted his thumb under the rest of his fingers to find the ring, and began turning it slowly.
He leaned forward, and the scythe appeared in his hand, the blade standing proudly upright while the bottom rested on the floor. “And, as I’m sure you’ve all guessed by now, things will be changing.” CORY COLLIER, LEAH SIVAN, DAMIEN BECK | yeet

Shifting from foot to foot, Cory tried to drag a little of Augustus’ ballsiness up from where the rogue reaper was sitting in the back of his brain with his feet up. If he could’ve popped a bag of popcorn in his subconscious, Augustus would’ve undoubtedly had his feet up and been tossing kernels back into his mouth with glee. Meek little Cory trying to face off against a big, bad warlock.
He held his ground as the ogre sized man took a half step in, his prominent, Neanderthal brow bunching. The working gears behind the small dark eyes were practically visible.
”Look, I’m the one who’ll do the hard work. I just need to know how to get her out of there. They said you were the man to speak to about them. They … they emptied your town, r-right?” Cory babbled, his fingers unfurling between them like this guy wouldn’t steamroller right over him.
The big man flinched like he’d swung a fist instead. His eyes narrowed and now he was taking a step back from him. ”They got everybody, but me. They’re gonna do the same to your town, there’s nothin’ you can do about it. Run while you can.”
No!
Cory shook his head vehemently. The people he loved in Mystic Falls had lost enough as it was, he wasn’t gonna let it happen again. He wasn’t gonna lose Ruby, or Dani, Petyr’s parents weren’t gonna disappear into thin air. The Damascas … His breath was coming short as he licked lips that had suddenly gone dry with fear. ”Please…”
”If you can’t walk in and just bring her out with you, what makes you think anybody else can?”
His mouth fell open as the big man turned and started to walk away. There had to be a way, but did it have to be difficult?
Turning on the spot like he was a compass seeking his true North, Cory cursed when he felt a different sort of pull. Not now. Why did Death have the worst timing? Probably because he’d always known exactly what his people were doing and that thought had his stomach quivering as he followed the pull and appeared in Death’s chambers.
Cory glanced around, feeling just as small as he had each time he’d come here for a face to face with the big man. Others were arriving too, the room wasn’t small but it started feeling a little crowded. Of course Elias had been the first one here, sitting in the big chair like he owned the place. Frowning, Cory darted glimpses towards the shadows, like Death would appear and slap him on the knuckles for his impudence. There was no sign of him by the time Elias started talking though.
The frown he’d been wearing deepened as Elias’ gaze slid over him. The quiver in the pit of his stomach got worse, that feeling like something was wrong that had been clinging to him since he’d found Ruby in the train station growing. Had it just been him thinking something wasn’t right or … ”But he’s Death…” Cory panted. That meant it didn’t matter what they thought. He’d been around forever, doing things exactly the way he’d wanted. Elias could stamp his foot about it all he wanted, it didn’t mean he was gonna be able to change things.
”What?” Cory barked out, confusion and a thread of anger in his voice. ”It doesn’t work like that, does it? Damien? Leah?” He looked at both of them like they’d just laugh and correct Elias. This wasn’t one of those TV shows with all the knights and dragons, you couldn’t just take the throne and become a …
He looked back at Elias, staring at the ring on his finger, the scythe that had appeared in his hands like he was a magician snapping his fingers and producing a rabbit. ”What are you gonna do to us?” he asked, like suddenly the scythe was gonna start swinging, the heads of everybody who’d ever mouthed off against Elias tumbling. Surely that meant Leah would be first, she’d torn up every rule they’d ever been given.

There were two reasons Remzi called her out to the woods because he was stupid enough to get into a fight with someone who had wooden bullets. The first reason was because she was his number one go to. Whenever shit got serious they could rely on each other, which was ironic considering they were the most unreliable people in the world. The second reason was because Remzi realised Leah was the only person who could realistically save him. Raik was a useless human and Ayla was just useless in general. It was more than likely reason two, which pained Leah. He hadn’t called her because he wanted her there, he called her because he needed her to save him. Course there was no hesitation from Leah. For a brief moment their problems fizzled away. It could have been their chance to rekindle their weird relationship. Leah could have poured her heart out to him, telling him she missed him. There was this massive fucking vacant spot in her life which only he could fill. She could have told him she was sorry for everything and she was willing to give him some level of commitment. But no, she saved his life, helped him back into town then disappeared. The pain would fade eventually. She had an eternity to fix her broken heart. In the meantime she was throwing herself at every man available. It didn’t help to numb the pain, but it temporarily filled the gap left behind by Remzi. It wasn’t often she was dragged up to Death’s office. It wasn’t a call she was expecting either, given she had actually been doing her job recently. She also wasn’t expecting to see the rest of her co-workers gathered in Death’s office too. “Well isn’t this wonderful.” She commented as clapped her hands together, strolling through to Death's little cute library, where Elias was sitting, like he was King of the castle. Except he was. Leah folded her arms, with a deep frown on her face as Cory squeezed a question out, looking at her and Damien for answers. “Fuck knows.” She shrugged, glancing back at Elias, “How the fuck did you replace Death?” It was a thing she didn’t even know was possible. Did this mean she could become Death? Interesting. DAMIEN BECK

Being at the end of Death’s choke chain had never sat well with him. More than fifty years ago the starched collar of his shirt had been chafing at his throat at work, now it was this job. If he could’ve broken free of it, maybe he’d already have had Aurora set up on some tropical island thousands of miles away. Her brother would’ve been nothing but an occasional thought, his too, although knowing that thing in Sonny it would’ve found some way to make sure they weren’t apart for long. His life never worked out that way though.
Damien worked a finger underneath his collar, popping the top button of his shirt as he appeared in another alleyway to deal with the human soul that was running around like a headless chicken. Dark brows hitched, taking in the three bodies scattered around the portly male body that obviously belonged to the soul he was meant to scoop up. ”You did this?” he asked, indicating the bodies with a swirl of his finger.
”There was another,” the man growled, flipping around on him. ”It ran off when those three tore each other apart. You need to stop it.”
Scoffing, Damien raised his hands and then gestured the guy close. That was above his paygrade. ”That’s someone else’s job. Let’s go. You’re dead. I’m here to take you to your afterlife. You ready to come along?”
For a moment the guy looked like he was going to argue, but then he huffed out a breath and nodded. ”That thing’s gonna infect somebody else,” he muttered.
Suppressing a shudder, Damien settled a hand on the guy’s shoulder – probably not the cleanest bit of him, but he was gonna scald himself in a damn shower when this was done. It had become his pattern lately, a desperate hope that he could avoid carrying this thing back to Aurora. It seemed as though every body he dealt with these days was due to the virus that was raging through town. Death hadn’t done a damn thing to stop it, he’d probably step back and call it the natural order, but everything about this situation felt off.
The guy started to protest the moment they hit Hell, but Damien was already stepping back, raising his hands. There were no take backs. ”Not my choice, sorry pal. You got a problem, speak to the big man.” Considering who was in charge of Hell these days it was probably a smart move just allowing himself to be dragged off into the shadows by something.
As soon as he was out of sight, Damien was following the next pull. These days they were relentless, but it was as though the grip on them was different. Maybe Death had ended up as tired about this whole thing as the rest of them.
It wasn’t the big man sitting in his big chair when he arrived in Death’s little bolt hole though. Damien turned around in a circle, his mouth turning down at the corners as he picked out Cory and Leah … and Elias. Fucking fantastic. He’d parked himself up on what was practically a stage, all the better to lord his reaper merit badges over all of them.
Hissing out a sigh, he shook his head. ”Who died and made you … fuck.” The scowl deepened as Elias smirked at his little tale of having dethroned Death himself. ”Even the big guys fall,” Damien muttered aside at Cory, shaking his head before he shrugged. ”I’m guessing there was a way and the boy scout up there found a way to make it happen. Why follow the rules when you can make them yourself.” And given how many fits he’d already pitched about having to do all the work himself, Elias probably had a list of them the length of his arm now. First one was likely making sure all those punishments happened – especially for crimes like consorting with the enemy. He was fucked.
Smirking back, Damien flipped his hands over, fisting them lightly to hold out his wrists in Elias’ direction. Like he’d actually be the first guy to put him in cuffs. If the FBI and dozens of police departments couldn’t do it when he was alive, a douche like Elias wasn’t gonna do it when he was dead. ”Now you’ve shown off what you managed to do, how ‘bout you just tell us about the changes so we can get this over and done with?” Cory might’ve worried about what was gonna happen to him, but the kid was a saint. The only people at risk of getting fucked over here were him and Leah and she didn’t seem anywhere near worried enough about it.

━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ LIKE LITTLE PAWNS ON A CHESSBOARD, THE reapers showed up and acted exactly as Elias expected them to. Cory was practically trembling, like a puppy about to piss on the floor, Leah seemed mildly unphased━and more like she wanted to jump his bones━and Damien started off snarky. Elias’ expression didn’t change from his ghostly smirk.
They each had their own questions, and while Elias would’ve loved to boast about how he’d done it, it’d give them the idea to turn it around on him━not that any of them were skilled or organized enough to pull it off. “I did follow the rules.” Elias said sharply, his eyes cutting to Damien. “I’m the only person in this room who does. There are measures put in place so that, when our Death became unsatisfactory, I could ensure someone capable could replace him. Don’t worry, though; none of you will have that problem.” For a second, his smirk grew, but the trace of it vanished as quickly as it came. His eyes jumped over to Cory━seeing as he’d already answered Leah’s question.
“Hopefully, I won’t have to do anything. That is, so long as you all keep yourselves in line.” He grit his teeth as he began to lay out the rules, “There will be no more bringing anyone back from the dead. No more covering up crimes, or helping friends of another species get away with murder.” He glared at Damien again, then Leah, and shifted his eyes to Cory, “No more saving people before they die, regardless of the circumstances. And keep that rogue reaper of yours in check, or I will.”
He stood, walking to the edge of the highest level, the scythe’s handle tapping the floor with each step. He addressed each of them, “There are two plagues sweeping through Mystic Falls at the moment. First, the Wild Hunt, which tried to slip under our noses by taking people and erasing all memory of them instead of killing them. We are immune to the memory wipe, of course.” His fingers tightened on the staff. The platform wasn’t extremely tall, but he was used to tower over everyone anyway. This only made it easier. “The second is more concerning. Humans and creatures alike are becoming infected with a disease that makes them erratic, aggressive, and murderous. Like rabies, but ten times worse. This is another unnatural shift that’s upsetting the balance. If you can find the source, or a cure, you will be instrumental in setting Mystic Falls on the correct path once more. If you can simply round up the infected and keep them somewhere where they cannot harm anyone else, that would be helpful, as well. I know none of you are familiar with making yourselves useful, but you’re going to learn to be. Am I understood?” CORY COLLIER | no notes.

Change hadn’t come easy in a long time – not since it had arrived at the door in a cop’s uniform with the devastating news that their dad was dead. Each time it had knocked since meant another savage twist to his life: leukaemia, drowning, Augustus’ offer, sleeping with someone again and the nightmare with Petyr. This, Elias sitting in Death’s chair, this felt like another one of them.
Leah might rag on him for being weak and always doing what he was told – and she’d played on it when she’d attacked Destiny – but out of all of them Elias was the one who probably clung to the rule book the hardest. He was the one that called the rest of them on their shit. He’d have thought that his attitude was prized by Death, considering how much trouble everybody else caused, but Elias had …
Holy shit!
For a moment hating Leah was put aside as he tried to figure this out. Tongue tied, Cory’s mouth was moving almost wordlessly, then he tore his gaze away from the two of them. Death wasn’t just a big guy, he was like the big guy. ”Boy scouts don’t do that,” he muttered. That little voice in the back of his head was screaming that Elias loved the rules. How many people were gonna lie blatantly to his face? Like Leah before him, Elias seemed to have cast off the sheep’s clothing he’d been wearing and now the big bad wolves were surrounding him here.
He might’ve been flailing over the whole thing, but Leah and Damien wouldn’t panic. They were both standing up to Elias. Maybe if Elias told them how he’d done it one of them would turn the knowledge back on him. God, don’t let it be Leah. ”Murdering your boss doesn’t sound like it’s within the rules,” he muttered, pressed the back of his hand to his mouth to try and push back the sick feeling as Elias stared down Damien. Unsatisfactory? Cory swallowed back the sound that nearly choked out. Where had Elias been hiding all of this ego?
Bile rushed up the back of his throat as Elias pinned him with a glare. He could see the irritation under the surface. Did Elias think he could just announce it and they’d all applaud his mutiny? His jab hit and Cory found himself staring mutinously back at him. ”Not everybody deserves to be dead. Some people get taken before their time, bringing them back is the right thing.” Like Elias expected him to keep fighting, he swung back towards him after he’d given Damien and Leah their slaps on the wrist. His lips settled into a thin line, his heavy brows drawing together as he stared at Elias. Screw the circumstances. It wasn’t like Augustus was gonna let anybody keep him in check – not even the new Death.
Backing up was gonna make him look weak at this point, but Elias was getting up and coming close. The scythe tapped at the floor, a creepy reminder of just who was top of the heap now. His throat went dry, but not because he was afraid of Elias. Cory was sure his brain had short circuited at the mention of people being taken. Ruby! ”H-how are we gonna stop them … the Wild Hunt? If we’re immune we can maybe get people back from them, right? There’s gotta be some way to get people back if they’re not meant to be doing it?” Usually the disease talk would’ve have had terrified – that stuff was a threat to everybody he cared about here – but Ruby couldn’t protect herself there. She hadn’t even known who he was. Elias was still talking, probably expecting some sir, yes sir from them over his orders to rodeo the infected (was he even immune from that since he wasn’t like the rest of them?), but Cory was taking another step forward, ready to make a grab for him if he tried to disappear out of here without telling him.

Since when had Death become unsatisfactory? He was the perfect boss. Never checked in on his employees, let them do what they wanted. Hell, he even brought people back from the dead if you asked nicely. Leah was hoping she’d drag him in her bed at some point, but Elias had ruined it all by killing Death. Elias was the type of person who reminded the teacher they’d set homework the night before before class was dismissed. Following the rules got you nowhere though, plus it was boring. She knew there was a handbook of rules to be followed when she became a reaper, but Leah skimmed the first five and left the rest. Ooo, her mind was running the possibilities of what Elias could do to her if she didn’t follow the rules. It sent a chill through her body as she suppressed her smile. She was guilty of maybe two of those things, but she hadn’t broken these rules for a long time. Not since her and Remzi parted ways. “Hope you’re listening Cory. No bringing people back from the dead.” But he bit back to Elias instantly, crying that not everyone deserved to die. She couldn’t resist but to roll her eyes. “I think he’s in the wrong job.” She muttered to Damien, like she’d never bent the rules regarding that. Technically she didn’t bring Raik back from the dead, she just found someone who could. That wasn’t breaking the rules. Jesus. Elias looked so damn sexy with his scythe. Maybe he’d let her play with it later. Leah inspected her nails as Elias started to talk about the wild hunt and some Ghost people. Wait, maybe she could introduce Ayla to the Ghostriders, avoiding the whole mess of having to kill her. “Why Cory? Have you got someone you need to save?” Her eyes drifted towards him, with a smile on her face. She looked back at Elias, on his big fancy platform as he moved onto the next topic. “Question.” She raised her hand for a moment, as if they were in class, before lowering it again, “This virus. Can we catch it? Because I ain’t rounding up infected zombies if I’m gonna get sick myself. Buuuut I’m happy to find a cure.” Easy job since this shit sounded incurable. DAMIEN BECK

Damien started to scoff at the idea that this little mutiny was following the rules, but the sound died in his throat. That was all Elias had ever done – follow the rules to the letter. The guy probably went to bed holding onto the Reaper bible. Thou shall not resurrect, thou shall not associate with murderers, thou shall stick a knife in the boss’ back if you think he can’t handle the job any longer. Out of all of them Elias was always gonna be the one to think it. The rest of them liked the freedom, but not Elias.
Meeting his eye, Damien chuckled dryly. He nudged his glasses up his nose, narrowing his eyes behind them. ”That’s … good of you,” he scoffed. ”I think you and the rest of us might argue with you on the whole ’I could never be unsatisfactory’ bullshit.” There was a name for guys like Elias – other than brown nose – dictators. The world had gotten rid of plenty of them before and each one had taken their little trip down to Hell still believing that they were doing the right thing, just like Saint Elias here.
Cory was squirming under the pressure of Elias’ lecture, probably at the sight of that scythe too. Leah … Damien glanced over at her as Cory actually seemed to find a pair and took a swipe at Elias. He snorted at her eye roll, the swipe at the kid. ”He musta done something right for you to be here,” he reminded her. Out of all of them she seemed to have the lest problem with this though. She was probably latching onto the idea that they were still self-governing – keeping herself in line was never gonna happen. His gaze snapped back to Elias at the mention of covering up crimes and helping friends get away with murder. ”Sorry, I thought this was meant to be Death speaking, not the Fed. If there’s no bringing anybody back, then those deaths are within the natural order. Pick a lane, man. Cop or Death, you can’t be both.” And anyway, he wasn’t going to listen to either. Slipping that ring on hadn’t made Elias God after all. The urge to vanish out of here and leave Cory and Leah to it was bubbling up real fast, but then Elias started to swagger forward, that blade thumping the floor like he was playing his own music for his march. Damien’s gaze snapped down to where the scythe was striking to the floor and then snapped back to Elias’ again as he started to drop details on their current problems. The Wild Hunt he couldn’t have given less of a shit about – it hadn’t hit him yet, he still remembered Aurora, still remembered Sonny, if the assholes wanted to take Tristan he’d be fucking ecstatic. The virus though….
Like his mind had stuck on the words Wild Hunt, Cory started asking how to fix that. ”Yes boss,” Damien drawled in a saccharine tone before his lips peeled back and he bared his teeth in a sneer. He didn’t imagine that Leah’s refusal to follow his instructions was gonna go down well here – Elias had never liked the rest of them picking and choosing their assignments. ”Since you’ve got all the answers here, where do you suggest we put ‘em? Here? Looks like you’ve got some room now.” Hector couldn’t have been the source, but at some point soon someone was gonna figured out that he was infected and maybe they’d start the witch hunt right there. Aurora was only a couple of degrees of separation from him, too close for his liking, but somehow she’d avoided being infected so far. It didn’t matter if it was gonna be the right thing or not, he needed to keep this thing away from her.

━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ ELIAS DIDN’T EXPECT THEM TO TAKE ALL THIS news without argument, but it was still annoying when they didn’t. The last Death didn’t know how great he had it with Elias as his only loyal reaper, and he’d fucked it up. That didn’t matter anymore, though, because Elias was going to ensure he righted all of the last Death’s wrongs.
“It isn’t right according to the rules or the way we do things. It defies the natural order.” Elias didn’t argue, he simply stated fact, and left it at that. He also didn’t intervene when Leah began taunting Cory.
His gaze swept to Damien after he gave them all a final warning about their behaviour, still smirking, though he was mildly irritated━but that feeling wasn’t anything new, especially around them. “No, it’s time for you to pick one: reaper or accessory to murder. If your demon friend is running around killing mass amounts of people for fun, then it defies the natural order.” There was another button at the end, like he didn’t expect Damien to continue arguing. Elias wasn’t stupid, though; he knew they would all have more to yap about.
We went on to warn them about the Hunt and the virus, and it was Cory who piped up again, still sounding as though he were about to burst into tears. It made Elias sick. “Yes, we’re able to bring them back ourselves, but the place they’re being kept is mixed. Some of those people belong to towns that have been completely wiped out. Bringing them all back would be complicated.” But doable. Elias just needed better manpower than what he was seeing in front of him now. “It doesn’t seem we can communicate with the beings responsible for the Wild Hunt, so this may result in an all-out war if they grow angry enough.” Which Elias would be prepared for.
Leah made a good point, though. “Is there someone you want to get out?” Elias asked, then quickly realized he didn’t care. He lifted the scythe two inches from the floor and waved it as though it were his hand, showing how little he cared. “Never mind.” He didn’t want to hear Cory’s sob story, because he was sure there was one coming, “Go in and get them out. Only one person, though.” And he could test whether or not the Wild Hunt would notice.
He appreciated the fact that Leah raised her hand, though he realized quickly that it might’ve been a ruder gesture than he’d initially believed. “No,” Elias scoffed, “We’re dead and have not been resurrected; of course we can’t catch it.” What an idiotic question. He’d known what he was getting into when he took the job, though.
Elias ignored Damien’s thoughtless comments and his attempt to take another stab at his new boss, answering only what was an actual question. “Round them up and store them somewhere outside of Mystic Falls. Leah, you have some experience with holding people against their will in abandoned warehouses, don’t you?” Elias narrowed his eyes at her, taking this moment to make a comment about it, because it was in the past and something he couldn’t change, though he was silently warning her that it would not happen again. And perhaps Cory could’ve gone to somebody about it if they’d had a Death who was ever around.
“That’s everything.” Elias announced after a moment when he realized they might overstay their welcome. “Leave here and figure out what real work is.” He had little to no faith it would happen, but he had to at least remind them. CORY COLLIER | no notes.

He’d never been the sort of kid who got stuffed in a locker in school, or went home with a fat lip given to him by some kid who wanted the pack lunch Dani had managed to put together for him. It wasn’t because of his height, definitely not because he ever gave off intimidating vibes. His sister had done that for him, especially when she had Brooke beside her. They might’ve been a foot shorter, but they’d had that aura about them that stopped people messing with them. Cory knew he was missing it. Everyone saw him as soft, expected him to cave, instead of standing toe to toe with them.
Among this lot he definitely came off as the weakest, he was swallowing hard though, straightening up and trying to hold his ground against both Elias himself and his argument. Seeing an opportunity Leah decided to get a dig in. Some part of him had been prepared though. Pale eyes shot to her, his lips pinching before he spoke. ”I’m betting it’s no killing either, especially babies,” he said hoarsely. If there was one soul that he should’ve been able to bring back, it was Petyr’s. Leah had thought he could do it, she wouldn’t have panicked and called him to that warehouse otherwise. As she muttered to Damon, Cory dipped his heart and snorted. Maybe he wasn’t built for this, but other than Elias none of them seemed to be.
At least he wasn’t the only one being told off, Damien was just as bad. He grumbled over Elias’ warnings like he was already planning on picking and choosing what rules he was gonna be shackled by. Elias would be pissed, but he was gonna do the same. Shutting up about the right way of doing things didn’t mean he was agreeing with Elias view. Theo dying in the first place had defied the natural order, nobody could convince him otherwise. He imagined Damien was gonna feel the same way over whatever it was he’d been getting up to and Leah … well, Leah lied with every breath.
Relief shot through him at Elias’ explanation that those in the train station weren’t entirely lost. A high pitched whistling filled his ears like his fear was steam shrieking out of a boiling kettle. ”Not me. Have you? I’m guessing your boyfriend’s not immune.” Leah might’ve been when it came to real feelings though. She’d probably toss the guy she’d been with at the warehouse right at the infected and walk away without a second thought. He was on the flip side of it – leaving all the others in the train station was going to bother him, but the only one who really mattered for now was Ruby and he finally had a way to get her out.
Surprise, surprise. Elias fixed on what Leah had asked. Clamping his mouth together like the truth might spill out, Cory shook his head at Elias. He shifted his weight from foot to foot, but let out a rough breath when Elias gave him permission. His gaze rolled out and met Elias, his nod almost minute. ”Wait,” she spluttered suddenly. Looking back and forth between Leah and Elias, he was shaking his head again. ”I have been. I’m not dead the same as you.” Which meant he had to be damn careful. His hands curled into fists and he burrowed them into his pockets as Elias dismissed them – with a warning to Leah. Warmth flooded his gut, maybe Leah wasn’t the prize pupil after all. Cory aimed a smirk at her before he took a step back and winked out. All he needed now was a break in his schedule to go and find Ruby again.

It was only a matter of time before Cory brought up Destiny’s baby. She was waiting for him to snitch. Spilling out whatever story Destiny had fed to him, probably leaving out the important bits like the fact her and Grey went after Raik. Probably painted them both as innocent people. Leah’s eyes locked with Cory for a moment, “I bet you ate up their story. Hanging off every word.” She almost went on to defend herself before realising she couldn’t give a shit what Cory thought about her. She didn’t want to drag this awful meeting any longer than necessary either. She wanted to get the fuck out of there. She glanced over towards Damien next. It was actually hilarious that none of them were following the rules. They’d managed to get away with it for so long too since Death didn’t pop into Mystic Falls to check up on them. But now Elias was making it his personal mission to keep the three of them in line. For Leah, it wasn’t too much of a problem. The only thing she was guilty of is choosing to do to the hairdressers over collecting a soul. Since her and Remzi parted ways she was no longer an accessory to murder either. Her life was very mundane. Elias completely brushed off the suggestion Cory had someone trapped in the train station. She frowned at Cory’s comment, “Please start engaging your brain before you speak. Obviously I don’t have anyone in there.” It felt like she was speaking to someone with the IQ of a brick. It was tempting to pop in there to see what idiots had been swept up. “Oh sorry I didn’t realise you were an expert on this virus that's just arrived in Mystic Falls.” Elias aka the fucking know it all. Hopefully someone would sneeze on Cory soon though, infecting him. No doubt he was about to be absolutely useless on the job Elias had allocated them. Wait, had Cory snitched? Her eyes narrowed at Elias. “I’ll see what I can do.” Maybe. She wasn’t overly keen on going on there to find who was foaming at the mouth. “So, how are we addressing you from now on? Sir? Mr Death?” Daddy Death? She looked over at Cory, who was smirking at her then had the audacity to wink. “Ew. Don’t fucking wink at me again.” She’d tear his eyeballs out and feed them to him next time. “Anyway. Bye bitches.” She gave a quick wave to the three of them before disappearing out of there. Not giving a fuck about respecting their new boss, Damien scoffed again. Elias could preach the rules all he wanted, what it was now was his natural order and that didn’t match the old Death’s, or anybody else’s in this room. Leah could taunt Cory about it all she wanted, but just a few short months ago she’d been on the brink of a little murder herself and there were the murky circumstances of his brother’s girlfriend losing their baby too. Warnings would bounce off of Leah like rain off a window. All three of them standing there had deaf ears in their own way and no amount of lectures was gonna change that.
Damien scraped his teeth over his upper lip. Knowing that wasn’t stopping Elias from trying to stamp the words into their heads though. He eyed Elias steadily, knowing if he stared at that smirk for too long he’d be tempted to grab that scythe from his hands to swing from into the centre of it. ”You’re not putting that on me. It’s their natural order, nothing to do with us. There’s no blood on my hands, if there was I’m pretty sure you’d have tried to put me behind bars by now.” Elias could pretend his day job didn’t exist all he wanted, but it did and he was pretty sure the guy took that just as seriously.
No matter how much they hated their new boss, the job would carry on regardless. People died, their souls sprung free, and the three of them – along with the faceless masses of other reapers – would scrape them up and deliver them. The fact that those numbers had been rising of late hadn’t gone unnoticed. Apparently Elias had figured out what was causing it – the guys wiping people from existence on top of the existing shit storm of the virus. Damien’s frown deepened, his gaze skipping over to Cory before he glazed right over that mess. Unless those things came for Aurora, his bigger problem was the virus she might already have been exposed to thanks to Hector. That guy was becoming as big a pain in his ass as Elias. All the same, he filed the knowledge away, too smart too dismiss the situation all together.
Cory’s sudden interest in the people taken didn’t go unnoticed, but that wasn’t his problem. Maybe he’d finally got himself a girlfriend along with a tiny pair of balls that he was trying to apply to stand up against Elias here. Undoubtedly Leah would turn it against him later, filing away that little weakness to claw herself up another rung of the ladder. The kid seemed to have enough problems as it was, being fragile and human and all. If Cory caught this shit there was a chance they’d be a man down and he wasn’t intending on setting Aurora or Sonny aside just to go following Elias’ orders more often. They were the people he needed to protect, the same way Cory would whoever was trapped and Leah would her boyfriend – it didn’t matter if she used the title or not, he’d already seen how protective she was over him and apparently Cory had too. ”Think he meant the virus. You know people who can catch that,” he muttered. Not that he was about to point out exactly who here, Elias would probably pop a blood vessel if this went on much longer.
Orders were given, most of which would be ignored. Round people up like cattle, lock them up, let them tear each other apart until someone came up with a way to fix this. Damien had to choke back a sound as Elias suddenly threw shade at Leah. Yeah, the two of them weren’t the only ones who knew what she’d done. He shifted on his feet, vague amusement twitching at his lips, but not in the same way it did Cory. The kid actually tossed some sass before he scurried out, probably to go rescue whoever he cared about instead of following Elias’ dumb fucking orders.
Leah had just been trying to bait them with that comment about how to address Elias, but it still left him holding back a retch. The asshole was how he was gonna be talked about at the very least. If Leah wanted to suck up to that, she was welcome to, it wasn’t gonna stop Elias burying that scythe in her back when she caused too much trouble. One right after another her and Cory had vanished, leaving him and Elias standing there feet apart.
”You better keep that sharpened, someone’s gonna disappoint you soon enough and I’m laying money on it being me. You’re not gonna get more than one chance,” Damien warned as he eyed the guy again. Stepping back, Damien smoothed a hand down the front of his shirt. ”Enjoy it while it lasts, I can’t see this being a long term thing.” Not now that they knew Death could be killed. At some point soon one of them was gonna tire of Elias’ choke chain and then he’d be the one getting replaced. His smile twitched, his middle finger rising in a childish gesture as he vanished.
