If anybody saw something weird in the woman rushing through town with a blood-rimmed hole punched straight through the chest of her dress, then none of them said anything. The crowd had been hushed when she’d stumbled out of the cage, bloodied and tear stained. None of them had been expecting what had happened either, maybe they’d cheered for that blonde bitch when she’d left, but by then Phoebe was beyond hearing anything.
The first time she’d been in a fight for her life, her pulse had been whooshing in her ears, drowning out what the vampires had been saying, this time she’d heard every word that spilled out of the demon’s mouth crystal clear. Turn off your emotions and your sister lives – or, rather, the evil bitch version of the speech. Lawrence had chosen her over holding onto himself.
A sob rolled out of Phoebe as she plastered a hand against the glass front of one of the buildings on the square to avoid rolling an ankle and hitting the ground. They’d lost each other once and now she’d lost Lawrence again. Switching off your emotions wasn’t just a shift in mood, it meant you no longer cared, anything you felt for someone was gone in an instant – any chance you had of your conscience telling you to stop vanished in an instant. It wouldn’t matter if it was demon barbie standing in front of you or your best friend, either way you’d drain them dry or tear their heart of their chest.
Her other hand covered that hole in her dress for a moment, her ribs pressing against her palm as she sucked in a breath. Hannya wouldn’t get the chance to put her in that position again – she had the bitch’s number now – but Teddy wouldn’t have a hope in hell against either of them. The man didn’t even have his own magic, he had to syphon it from somebody else and he wouldn’t do that to Lawrence if he attacked. Friendship would stop him and then he’d be dead, all because he had too soft a heart.
It. Wasn’t. Happening.
Phoebe caught her balance and stormed forward again, heels clattering a staccato on the sidewalk as she approached their building. Chances were that Teddy was home for Halloween, stood by the apartment door with a bucketful of candy because that’s what friendly folks in small towns were meant to do. Lawrence wouldn’t have let him near the club, or the warehouse, Teddy wasn’t built for either. He was fragile in looks and in strength, more of a danger to himself than anybody else (except for maybe her with his unerring aim when it came to squeezing a heart that had never stopped being tender beneath the scar tissue that had formed around it). Teddy could put on a sour face, he could sulk and melt something inside you with those big, brown puppy dog eyes. When it came down to it though, he wouldn’t fight his best friend and maybe he’d die for it.
The elevator took its damn time, leaving her hammering her hand against the button as she stared up, like that would make it arrive faster. Just as she decided to blur up the stairs, it arrived. Phoebe repeated her move inside, pacing restlessly until it chimed at their floor, not her own. It was better that she gave Lawrence access to her place. Teddy could switch his deed and hunker down behind closed doors that Lawrence couldn’t get through, until she got him to flip the damn switch again.
Not giving a shit about anybody else who lived on this floor, Phoebe was shrieking the moment she tore out of the elevator, thumping her hand against Teddy’s apartment door as soon as she reached it. ”Teddy! Teddy, open up! Lawrence is in trouble. Please! Teddy!” Each word was punctuated by another slap of her hand against the door. Her voice had gone tight, but she could already imagine Teddy behind the door, scoffing at another of her dramatic outbursts.

━ i started to dream again ━ TEDDY FLOPPED ONTO HIS BED AFTER HE’D finished his shower, clear of the dirt from work, his aching muscles somewhat soothed by the warm water. No matter how long he’d been working there, it was always like this. Some shifts were easier than others, of course, but on the night of Halloween, extra precautions had to be taken. Thankfully, he wasn’t working tonight━that shift went to the new guy, who’d have to deal with the craziness the night usually attracted. Some years hadn’t been so bad, but they could get hectic, and make you feel more unsafe than usual.
He was sure Lawrence was at the club tonight, some Halloween Event he’d mentioned to Teddy. Perhaps not at the club, but run by those who acted as his superiors. He didn’t really care when Lawrence got home, so long as he wasn’t too loud. Actually, Teddy thought he might put a sound barrier up for that reason.
Hauling himself out of bed with a quiet groan, Teddy pulled on his underwear and began (attempted) to pull the last bits of magic from his pendant, unsure where he’d filled it up from, but realizing he needed to find that well sooner rather than later. Just as he started to cast the spell, he heard shouting outside of his apartment, and then someone banging their fist on the door. He puffed out a breath, but before he even had a moment to be irritated about it, he rushed to the door, realizing what was being said.
Teddy stopped two steps into the hallway, realized what he was wearing and who was at the door, and ran back to change, yelling, “I’m coming!” As he threw himself into a pair of pyjama pants and an old t-shirt.
Finally, he pulled open the door, motioning Phoebe inside. “Come in,” He puffed, mostly being polite, as he knew she’d already been granted access. By who, he wasn’t sure, but it was probably him. That was the only theory that made sense━he just couldn’t remember doing it. “What’s going on with Lawrence?” He asked quickly, still mildly annoyed. He was worried for his best friend, but, ultimately, Lawrence was an adult━far older than Teddy━and could take care of himself. Unless something had gone horribly wrong at the “party.” He was reminded of it by Phoebe’s strange outfit, and the… was that real blood or fake blood on her chest? The strong, metallic, unpleasant invaded his senses, and he knew the answer. “What happened to you?”

She was pretty sure the only reason the door had opened had been because she’d mentioned Lawrence’s name. Maybe if she’d been there long enough, hollering his name and pounding on the door hard enough to have the frame splintering he’d have done something to shut her up and avoid the embarrassment of the neighbours knowing what was going on, but he wouldn’t have invited her in.
Phoebe shifted her weight from foot to foot, tears burning in her ears that Teddy probably wouldn’t believe were real. She could hear him sifting behind the door, promising that he was on his way, but it was taking too long. Each one of the spaced out beasts of her supposedly dead heart meant that Lawrence was that much closer to getting back here and being able to just stroll inside. Without thinking about the crushing grief that would come later, he’d drain Teddy without a second thought. Teddy probably wouldn’t have cared if it was the other way around, but underneath a thick skin and all of her shoddily built shields, she did.
At any other time she might’ve smirked and commented on the pyjamas, but not tonight. Phoebe gripped the door frame and stepped inside. As soon as she was in, she was kicking off her heels. Could she have done it anyway? Torn the door open and charged in like some tiny white knight on a horse? She frowned, glancing back at the door and then down at the mat as though some explanation would be revealed. The thought vanished as Teddy leapt straight to the whole point.
”That evil bitch finally got her own way, that’s what’s going on,” she panted. Phoebe’s hands came up like she could hold together the hole in her dress. Her heart wasn’t exposed beneath, but she felt like it was, as though she was standing naked in front of Teddy again, waiting for another cutting judgment.
Whiskey eyes, darkened by grief and embarrassment cut up to meet Teddy’s as he asked about her. Was it actual concern for her, or just a need for her to hurry up and explain so he could get her out of here. ”Hannya’s what happened to me, and to Lawrence,” she said hoarsely. Folding her arms around herself, Phoebe tried to push the memory of what the bitch’s nails had felt like gripping at her heart, the threat to kill her hovering on lips that were determined to poison Lawrence one way or another.
Swallowing hard, Phoebe tried to get the sequence of events square in her head. Witness statements were notoriously spotty, was she going to be any different? ”Lawrence started sleeping with the demon again. I was worried for him. I tried confronting him and got nowhere, so I went to the fight club that was going on tonight and Hannya confronted me instead.” It had been the demon’s intention from the start to force Lawrence to choose and to try and save her Lawrence had done just that.
”She put my name on the list. I had to get into the cage and fight her. Lawrence tried to stop it.” Her head was already ticking back and forth, the tears that had dried up on the way over here burning in her eyes again. ”She kicked my ass, got a fist in my chest and told Lawrence that either he turned his emotions off or she’d kill me.” Teddy probably wouldn’t have seen it as much of a lost, but she felt the tremors work through her bones. If she hadn’t been there Lawrence never wouldn’t have to turn his emotions off. This was on her and the guilt was crushing her.
She tried to straighten up and pull herself together. It took everything in her to manage it and jerk a chin up at Teddy. ”He’ll try and come back here. It’s not safe for you.” Teddy would probably scoff at that too, but she did care enough to try and protect both him and her brother. ”Get dressed, we need to go before he gets here. You’re signing the apartment over to somebody else. It’s gonna be the only way to stop Lawrence from being able to get in here and hurt you.” There was no question to it, just an order in the hardest tone she could manage when her throat ached with those unshed tears.

━ i started to dream again ━ PHOEBE TRAIPSED INTO HIS APARTMENT AND THREW her shoes off like she owned the place, and Teddy bit back his comment because she looked like she was about to fall apart, and he wasn’t completely evil.
He closed the door behind her and stepped back, giving her space as she began to relay the story in little pieces. Teddy wanted to know what was so important that she had to storm into his apartment and cause a ruckus, but he’d let her get it all out.
“Hannya?” He repeated, trying to find the name in his memory. He knew it through Lawrence, but that much was obvious. And, finally, it came━demon. The demon Lawrence had been sleeping with, the one Teddy had convinced him to stop seeing. Teddy said it was a bad idea, and while he wasn’t sure why he’d been so invested in Lawrence’s personal life at the time, it was probably just good advice. Getting tangled up with a demon was a bad idea.
He waited until it was all out, and then Teddy sighed and shook his head. That explained the blood, at least, and how frantic she was to get here. “I told him to cut it off with her. Why’s he such an idiot,” He muttered, the question rhetorical as he lifted a hand and ran it down his face, giving himself time to think this through.
Teddy puffed lightly as she claimed he wasn’t safe━why the hell did she care, anyway?━but as he clasped his pendant and felt it totally empty, with no power left to give, he knew she had a point. If they could lock Lawrence out of the apartment, it would make it easier on everyone while they (undoubtedly) worked to get his emotions back on.
“Fine.” Teddy relented, seeing no reasonable argument as he turned and walked back to his bedroom. He shut the door and quickly changed before going with her, casting a binding spell over the door with what he had left━just in case Lawrence came while they were gone.
