Tiny beads of sweat started to form on his forehead as he ripped his coat off, throwing it on the floor with fury. He took a deep breath, trying to level his thoughts for a moment. It never worked. He should have stayed at home, confined in the four walls of his apartment, but his absence in the club had been noted by a few. The problem was he didn’t care about the business anymore. Let the building burn to the ground. All he cared about was killing people. Elijah had provided an explanation to what was happening though. Hector was sick. Infected with some virus causing him to turn into a murderous creature. It made sense, but he struggled to believe it. Vampires couldn’t contract viruses, but Elijah was adamant because he was sick too. Since then Hector had been trying to fight the virus, however it was wearing him down every day. The fight inside of him was diminishing, it was easier to give in. Next he’d ripped the tie off his neck, throwing it on the floor too. The bar downstairs had a handful of vampires drinking in there. Linc was working, but nowhere to be seen. He watched the customer carefully on the CCTV screen, picturing killing each of them. He couldn’t though, could he? Kit had fired Lawrence recently for killing another employee, meanwhile Hector was seriously considering wiping out a bar full of customers to satisfy his needs. Everything after that was a blur as he mindlessly sparked mayhem in the bar. He casually decapitated and staked each customer. Two managed to slip away, the others tried to fight Hector. Just one put up a good fight, but Hector got the last laugh as he ripped the man’s heart from his chest before walking over to the bar and placing it on the counter top. He stared down at his bloody hands, droplets dripping off onto the carpet below. The virus was winning. There was no ounce of regret that he’d turned on some of his loyalest customers. Hector grabbed a bottle of whiskey off the shelf, pouring himself a shot. His red hand wrapped around the glass, knocking back the liquid. As he poured himself another one door into the bar swung open. He expected to see Linc, but it was Magnus. His friend. His grip tightened around the shot glass as it shattered in his hand. “Magnus. You need to leave.” Please. There was nothing stopping him from submitting to his urges and turning on his best friend. He raised one bloody hand, unbuttoning the top button on his shirt and tugging lightly at the collar. The need to kill was there, crawling beneath his skin, festering in his brain. The beads of sweat had started to form on his forehead again, as he was trying to fight the infection. No, he couldn’t attack Magnus. They were best friends and had been for centuries. Hector was considering killing the man he turned to after Evelyn died. One of his most trusted friends. Agitation grew stronger as he tried to hold himself back. He wiped the sweat off his forehead, smearing blood across his skin as he did so. He moved from behind the bar, his eyes locked on Magnus the whole time. Hector picked up the discarded heart off the bar, “This could be yours if you don’t leave.” He casually threw it up in the air, it slammed back down into the palm of his heart. He released his grip on the organ, it tumbled onto the floor. MAGNUS DAYNE

━ evil notions come free ━ ONCE ELIJAH HAD WARNED HIM OF WHAT Hector was going through, Magnus sat with the information. He warned Linc to keep an eye out (to relay information back to Magnus, but also to steer clear of Hector), but it didn’t seem like his old friend was frequenting the bar he owned very much anymore. That was already cause for concern. The visit to Hector’s home hadn’t helped much, either, but now it seemed to have reached its peak and spiralled out of control all at once━just when Magnus thought he was getting somewhere with his research. He caught wind of a suggestion that Nicholas Reid might know a way to help, which meant asking Linc to ask Cassie about it. Magnus certainly wasn’t going to do it himself, especially after Nicholas vouched for Cassie, and it spiralled into her sleeping over in Linc’s bed.
Ah, but that was a concern for another day. For now, he had to rush to the club after receiving a call from Linc. Hector was back, and he was tearing the place apart. The downstairs, even, and Linc was hiding, but it was only a matter of time━especially if he was on a rampage. Linc wouldn’t stand a chance.
The moment Magnus arrived, his eyes flicked around the bar, briefly surveying the bodies laying━headless and heartless━on the ground. One of the missing hearts was on the bar, behind which Hector was standing, drinking as if this was any other normal day.
“No, ‘Ector,” Magnus said lightly, taking two slow steps towards the bar, though he kept a wide berth between them. “You ‘aveta leave. Ya can’t do this. You’re sick, Hector, look’t what you’ve done.” He motioned around them, taking a cautious step closer as Hector let the heart roll onto the floor. “You’re my dearest friend,” He puffed softly, “I’ve gotta save ya from yourself. And I’m not leavin’ ya with this.”

They’d been there for each other throughout the darkest moments and now Magnus was there to support Hector. Yet, Hector couldn’t see it. A deep frown formed on his face as he shook his head, “I’m not sick. Vampires do not get sick… I’m just…” His voice trailed off as he took in his surroundings. There was a flash of realisation on his face, but only for a second before it faded back to a dark expression. “I don’t need saving.” He wasn’t some injured little human who needed nursing back to health. Hector didn’t necessarily need sleep, but he needed to rest. His mind never shut off, constantly churning over with thoughts about where he was going to find his next victim and how he was going to kill them. His body was tired, but his mind was in overdrive. If he killed Magnus he knew one day he’d come to regret but he desperately wanted to drive a stake through his best friend's heart. But, would the regret hold him back? His fingers were twitching, aching to pick up a piece of wood that lay closeby which had snapped off a chair in the melee which had just taken place. “I’m sorry Magnus.” He managed to squeeze the words out before that conscious part of his brain shut down though, the infection taking control of him. His mind and body slotted into autopilot as he grabbed the stake off the floor and made a beeline for Magnus. Hector managed to grab Magnus, slamming him down onto the floor. The wood hovered a few inches above Magnus’ heart as Hector tried his best to dive it downwards. After a few seconds Magnus pried Hector’s fingers from around the weapon, snapping his friend’s hand as he did so. It was enough to gain control and push Hector away. Hector’s hand clicked back into place as he regained composure before attempting to go for Magnus a second time. Magnus managed to get to the stake before Hector, swiping it off the floor and using it to hit Hector in the side of the head. He stumbled backwards, instantly feeling dizzy. He raised his hand, touching the fresh wound as the blood seeped down his face before blinking harshly trying to get his focus back. It was enough to hold him back though, as he darted forward, landing a punch on Magnus’ cheek. Magnus swung back, the stake firmly gripped in one of his hands to support his punches and they both descended into a fist fight. LINCOLN CROWNE

”It’s whisky, that’s what you asked for…” Linc stared across the bar at the vampire who was looking down into the glass that’d been set down in front of him like he’d taken a shit in it instead of filling it with the top shelf stuff that usually satisfied everybody else in here.
The man’s voice was a papery rasp as it emerged, the grey eyes that fixed on his when he lifted his head so pale they were almost indistinguishable from the whites. ”Macallan Sherry Oak, the 25 year stuff. I know you’ve got it back there somewhere.” The rest of him stayed deathly still – pale, spidery looking fingers spread on the bar top – but his chin hitched up in the direction of the store room.
For a second Linc just stared at the bloke, but then without a word he marched in the direction of the store room. If the customers drank the place dry while he was gone, that was Hector’s problem – not that he was likely to care about it these days. He pandered to all of the crusty old things that were members here, indulging them when Hannya and the rest of the girls weren’t. He was also slowly losing his shit if what Magnus had told him was anything to go by. Some virus had apparently been spreading through Mystic Falls and there was a chance Hector wasn’t in his right mind. So far Hector seemed to be fine, but he knew how quickly that could change, had seen Wesley switch from father figure to monster in a heartbeat.
Maybe he should’ve bought the vampire back here to pick his own bottle, there were dozens. He’d only picked through half of them, scowling down at the labels, when Hector made that same switch. Linc didn’t need to see that change filter over Hector’s features, at the first crash outside, he knew exactly what had happened. Hands shaking, he reached out and locked the door – beyond glad that Magnus had arranged for the place to be set up as a safe room. He was gonna need it again now. It took two tries to dial Magnus’ number, and only seconds to babble out what was going on. ”Dad, please, you n-need to g-get here…”
Curled practically fetal in a back corner of the tiny room, Linc stared at the door as the noise continued outside. Each crash, each scream had him flinching. He squeezed his eyes shut, seeing Wesley in one of his feeding frenzies behind his eyelids. Dead now. Magnus had made sure of that – this was Hector though, his eternal bestie. Could he do the same to him?
After what felt like an eternity things went quiet. Linc inched towards the door, hand plastered against it as he heard a door open again. His dad? Maybe. If it was, Magnus would come and get him.
He strained his hearing, letting out a rough breath as he heard his dad’s voice – pleading with Hector. Hector had to listen, the two of them had been joined at the hip for centuries. Magnus would get through to him, they’d like lock him up for his own good. Somehow Magnus would figure out how to fix this and it would all be fine. Social workers had apparently told his parents that admitting they had a problem was the first step towards getting off of things. Maybe that was true, but it sounded like Hector wasn’t ready to admit the same. He was denying it all, he was…
”Dad!” The first time he’d said the word had been when there was trouble too, as though the seriousness of the situation broke through all his emotional walls. This time there was a crash, the brittle snap of what he hoped was a bit of furniture, the smacks and scuffles of a fight that he recognised all too well. Feeling the burn of fear in his chest, Linc tore the door open and rushed out into a slaughterhouse.
If he’d stopped to look, he’d have seen bits of the crabby old vampire who’d sent him to the store room dotted around the place, but Linc fixed on the two men swinging at one another. Blood – Magnus was smeared with blood that he thought was his own, although Hector was splashed with it too. A makeshift stake was clutched in one of Magnus’ hands, one that could kill his dad if Hector managed to get it off of him in this brawl.
”Stop it,” Linc barked, his voice stronger than he felt. ”Get your hands off of my dad, you son of a bitch!” He stepped in like he wasn’t massively outmatched here, trying to get between them to avoid the worst happening to Magnus. Meeting his dad’s eye, Linc planted a hand against Hector’s back and scrabbled to take his legs out from under him.

Hector straightened himself up after Magnus had just swung for him again. Blood filled his mouth. He coughed slightly as it seeped from his mouth onto the carpet. “This won’t end until one of us is dead” He puffed out harshly, gaining control over his breathing as he geared himself up to attack Magnus once more. There was no stopping him by now. He needed to kill Magnus. It was like an itch which needed scratching. It would provide temporary relief. Exhaustion would set in soon for both of them. The question was, who would give in first? Hector had been bold enough to pick a fight with someone equal to his age. Only thirty years separate the pair. Hector was always teasing Magnus about those thirty years he had on him, but there was no room for jokes. The virus had convinced Hector to kill his best friend of over six hundred years. In the midst of it all he heard Linc’s voice coming from somewhere, yelling at him to get off his dad. Words weren’t going to stop him though. Linc’s hand landed on his back as he attempted to step in between Hector and Magnus. Hector turned around to face Linc, pushing Linc’s hand away as he did so. He wasn’t particularly picky with who he needed to kill. Just someone. Anyone. The closer he got to killing Magnus, the more unhinged his mind was becoming. His thoughts were fractured, nothing was making sense. He couldn't even recognise what he was doing. Now his attention was set on Linc though. In a blur Hector grabbed Linc by the shoulder, yanking him a little closer. His other hand plunged deep into Linc’s chest, his fingers wrapping around Linc’s heart. “It's not nice having someone elses hand wrapped around your heart, is it?” There was an internal battle going on inside Hector’s mind though. His sane side was screaming at him not to kill Linc. It would be an unforgivable act. MAGNUS DAYNE

━ evil notions come free ━ AS HECTOR ADVANCED TO ATTACK HIM, HIS words made Magnus instantly know that he was right━Hector was sick. He was losing all sense of control, and he was apologizing for it. “Ya don’t ‘ave to do this, Hector,” He said softly, though he knew it was too late to talk this out. Hector came at him with a stake, and Magnus fought for his life.
Snapping Hector’s wrist was mercy, and so was hitting him with the butt of the stake, trying to disorient him. The effects definitely lasted longer than they would’ve if Hector was healthy, but it wasn’t long before the other vampire was launching at him again, clearly trying to kill Magnus while Magnus was merely trying to subdue him. He used the stake to support his knuckles, landing as many as it took to knock Hector out━or get him far enough away to snap his neck.
He heard Linc’s voice, his attention snapping in the boy’s direction, concern flooding his system. “Linc, get ou━” Unfortunately, the distraction was just what Hector needed to land another blow, and Magnus stumbled back, hands around Hector’s collar to drag him along, too.
Of course Linc didn’t listen. Of course he didn’t keep himself safe, instead barrelling into the fight without hesitation, getting himself in the middle of it. He’d only get himself hurt, Magnus was sure, but he didn’t have time to protest before Hector was whirling on the boy.
No. Hector was sick, he wouldn’t have done this if he wasn’t, but none of that mattered right now. Not when Magnus’ son was in danger, likely to have his heart ripped out in a matter of moments.
“Get yer fuckin’ ‘ands off ‘im!” Magnus shouted, moving in a blur to be behind Hector and throwing the stake to the floor. He would’ve liked to throw Hector across the room, but with his hand around Linc’s heart, it could end very badly. Magnus snapped Hector’s neck instead, then almost instantly hugged his best friend’s sagging body, arms folding beneath Hector’s, both to save Linc and to ensure his friend didn’t crumple to the floor. Slowly, once he was sure Hector’s hold had gone limp, he pulled on the older vampire’s wrist, guiding it out of Linc’s chest.
And, just as gently, he lowered Hector to the floor, laying him down before stepping over him. “Linc,” He breathed, “You alright, son?” His hands held the boy’s shoulders, then his cheeks, as if the answer would be written on Linc’s face. After a moment, he puffed out a breath and dragged Linc into a hug, one hand cupping the back of Linc’s head, as though he were a tiny, precious baby. “You’re okay. You’re safe,” He said lightly, squeezing him tight. Magnus had saved him this time, thank God.

If there’d been a chance to save either of his parents from Wesley on the night the veil over the supernatural world had been torn down, would he have taken it? He probably couldn’t have said either way. Maybe if Wesley hadn’t compelled him to stop panicking, he might’ve opened his mouth at least. With Magnus it had been different almost from the start. His dad – the man actually worthy of the title – had saved him from that place. He’d dealt with all the shit he’d given him for it too, taking those verbal blows because he was a good man trying to do a good thing for a boy who hadn’t been sure he’d deserved it. It hadn’t taken long for him to realise that he’d try and be a better son for Magnus. After all the tragedy in his mega-long life he deserved it. In a century or five, he might stretch his legs a little and do that grown up thing of getting some distance from his parents. He wasn’t ready for that though. He wasn’t ready to let Hector take Magnus from him either.
His dad had gone to tell him to get out, but he didn’t even get the words out before Hector was swinging for him. Linc felt something inside of him brace itself as Magnus stumbled back, still tangled together with Hector. He gripped onto that part of him like it was his courage, grabbing for Hector to pull him off of Magnus. It should’ve been obvious that he’d have been like a tick on a gorilla’s back, but the realisation of how much trouble he’d put himself in didn’t hit until Hector whorled around. If there was a look of insanity, it was the one on Hector’s face now. It seared itself across his visions in a trembling wash of red as Hector’s fist punched through his ribs and grabbed his heart.
”D-dad,” Linc stuttered. He clutched at Hector’s sleeves like that grip was the only thing that was going to keep him standing, keep him alive. Magnus’ face blurred, then cleared as he blinked, the burn of tears in his eyes growing. If you’d asked him the day after he’d turned, he might’ve said he’d rather have died. Now he had things to live for – Cassie, his dad, even Jo. There was a life to live and it was meant to have been a long, happy one, not this. Linc swallowed hard, shaking his head, the fingers gripping at Hector trembling. ”I was j-just trying to p-protect my dad. Hector, p-please…”
Hector might’ve been beyond hearing his pleas, but he wasn’t beyond getting his neck snapped. At the brittle crack, he flinched, sucking in a breath like it might stop Hector tearing his heart out of his chest as he went down. Linc stood perfectly still as the fingers slowly let go of his heart and Magnus drew Hector’s hand out of his chest. He was still standing there as Magnus rose from laying Hector out on the floor. Blue eyes swivelled to meet his dad’s, finally breaking the spell. Blinking back the tears, Linc pressed his lips together and nodded. It had been so close…
Sniffing back the tears, Linc tried to blink the tears clear of his eyes again. ”I’m alright. I’m … I’m safe …” Thanks to his dad. For the second time Magnus had been right there where he’d been on the brink of death, protecting him, drawing him back from that edge. Last time he’d thrown all of that back at him, not this time.
Glassy eyes closing, Linc went into Magnus’ arms as he was pulled into a hug. Sobs racked his body, his fingers gripping for the back of his dad’s shirt. ”I just wanted to protect you,” he murmured. ”I couldn’t let him kill you. I couldn’t lose you.” He’d been within a hair’s breadth of it though. One tug and he’d have been the one on the floor, his face going grey with veins. Instead it was Hector’s body laying there, all signs of insanity wiped away as he opened his eyes and stared down at him. Something was so wrong, but Magnus would fix it. His dad could fix anything.
