The noise of the club shut off the moment the heavy metal door slammed shut behind him. Around at the front of the building it was probably still pumping out like a lure for the people waiting in the queue to get in, but back here there was just a vague thumping in the air, like distance drums. It probably had Giuseppe rolling in his grave. A place like this in his town, run by vampires, staffed by other supernatural – it was everything the old man hated right in the middle of what had been his town. Had been. These days the Founders didn’t have half the power they liked to believe they did.
Blue eyes narrowed as he made his way back towards the street. If they did rumours wouldn’t have been circulating about trouble finding the town again. The last time it had been people like the Mikaelsons behind it, old family feuds spilling over – the usual. This was different. Rumours of people going missing without a trace – people that seemed to disappear from memories as much as they did sight. People’s sanity starting to fray, bodies turning up, or worse, bodies that turned up and then mysteriously vanished. The whole thing left a bad taste in his mouth and his gut uneasy on nights like this one when Claire was working.
Damon strolled back towards the street, dipping a hand in his pocket to check his phone. Claire probably wouldn’t answer the phone while she was working, not without it being an emergency. His unease had him swiping at its screen though. If not Claire, then maybe Alaric, if anybody was digging around in this stuff it would be Ric. These days it felt like he was practically the grandfather of the rapidly spreading group of people in the know. Connected to the school, to the hunters that they all skirted around, juggling fatherhood, which probably meant he was no more likely to be able to meet him at the Grill for some sort of night cap than Claire would’ve been able to.
All play and no work was leaving Damon Salvatore a sad boy.
Huffing out a sigh, Damon started in that direction as he stepped out onto the street. There’d be someone around – if they hadn’t been snatched up by aliens or whatever the hell else was meant to be causing all these disappearances. He was about a block out from the Grill when he saw the brunette coming towards him. Not Elena, not Katherine either, thankfully, she would’ve been all they needed around here. She was a doppelganger though –which one was always a sort of crapshoot. At least with Elena and Katherine, he’d spent enough time with the two of them to be able to tell the difference on sight. This was more a quick study as he approached with a half smile on his face.
”Hey, Allison.” A shot in the dark that he thought might hit, if he was wrong it was close enough at least. ”Heading home? I guess you’re busy these days.” AKA chasing after the things that went bump in the night given that her dad was among those hunters who were probably tearing their hair out trying to figure out what was going on these days.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ AS THE DAYS GREW COLDER, Allison Argent was simply scolded by her father for returning home to their apartment late, almost every single night. It was almost comical really, an almost twenty-four-year old, still being told when curfew was. Of course the younger Argent never particularly paid attention to it, despite being a human in a supernatural filled town, but with her boyfriend being a part of the supernatural also - and with the skills of a hunter no less - Allison was sure she was fine.
That was until her dad drilled in her mind at the increasing number of people that were turning up missing, dead, or with holes around their bodies, drained of blood. It was the usual in the younger hunter's eyes, but to her father, something was going on. Something bad. Though, after spending the evening in the Grill with a friend, Allison's only plan for that night was to cuddle up to Nate's side and beg him to watch another romantic cheesy movie with her. Especially as of late, that specific genre had grown on her.
Well. That was supposedto be the plan. Seeing Damon Salvatore ahead of her as she walked, was not. Allison was in the loop of the long-reigning supernatural that lived in Mystic Falls, especially since she attended Whitmore with a few of the other guys. Elena, Stefan, Caroline. She hadn't become extremely close with all of them - except from Elena, but Allison had always heard from Scott, Stiles and even Liam at times what bad news Damon Salvatore was. He only seemed to be a 'good guy' when it proved to be useful to him.
"Damon." She began, noticing the off tone as he addressed her. What was wrong with him? But the penny dropped shortly after. Like Elena, Allison had a doppelganger of her own. She felt fortunate to have never...seen her in public, but being sat down by her friends to explain such a situation had been a mind-trip for the Argent. She couldn't begin to think how Elena used to feel, especially with Katherine impersonating her like it was her only job.
"I'm not her. Please don't make our only interaction for the night seem so awkward." Allison kept walking then, looking over her shoulder. "Why does where I'm going matter to you?"

Not all doppelgangers were made equal. They might have shared faces, but they couldn’t have been more different if they tried. Elena had been struck with just as much tragedy as Katherine had, but where Katherine had grown bitter and angry with it, Elena had ended up consumed with melancholy instead. There wasn’t a shared vicious bone between them. And, of course, the same could’ve been said for Tatia, for Amara too. Each was their own person and each had the potential to be oh so dangerous.
As this town had started to draw more of the supernatural in, the truth of them had begun to emerge, like the outline of a tree’s branches once its leaves began to fall. Katherine, Stefan, Allison Argent. Amara and the others had sworn there were no others with his face out there, but did they honestly think he was gonna believe that? Ego alone had certain that Damon Salvatore wasn’t the only one with this pretty face. One day they’d turn up in this town and then he’d be staring back at someone who was sure they knew him, only he wasn’t him.
Allison had probably gone through the same thing a thousand times, growing tired enough of it that his greeting now seemed to be ringing alarm bells for her. Had she thought he’d been expecting that French ancestor of hers, Marie-whatever. Blue eyes narrowed, amusement tugging at his lips as he dipped his head towards her. Maybe he had been, but it didn’t take more than that single greeting to have him sure. He’d heard enough about Chris Argent to see that same steely look he was famed for in his daughter’s far darker eyes.
”I wasn’t looking for her,” he promised, starting after her as she seemed to try and scurry away from him. Was the kick ass Allison Argent afraid of little old him? He was tempted to paste a hand to his chest like some old Southern broad, fluttering his lashes in shock.
Keeping a few steps back, he continued to trail after her. Pushing it with her was probably equal to painting a target on his back, but it wouldn’t have been the first there. ”I’m not allowed to be friendly these days?” he asked with a snort. ”What happened to merging all the little friend groups you guys have?” Not that he’d ever really been a part of them in the same way Stefan did. His eyes narrowed, scanning the street ahead. ”You’re heading away from the square, so I’m gonna put my money on home. I’d have thought your dad had bought a tank for you to be driving around here in, especially with this place turning into the Wild West lately.” That probably meant that the Argents were too busy keeping the rest of them safe from the nightmares to worry too much about their own safety.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ DESPITE DYING AND BEING BROUGHT back to life many years prior, Allison Argent never faced the reality of the supernatural. That she too was a part of it, even if she was a simple 'human' who grew up to be a hunter. Her ex boyfriend was a werewolf, a true alpha at that, her boyfriend after another werewolf and her current boyfriend..? Well, a Chimera. It wasn't easy to rid yourself of such things when you were surrounded by it almost ninety percent of the time. Nor did the Argent mind, she was just simply prepared for it.
Noticing how his head dipped in her direction, Allison uncertainly moved her head to the side, hoping to further avoid his gaze. Of course, Damon was a handsome man, and of course he knew this - but it was something the hunter grew to avoid completely. She had heard rumours and of course had conversations with Elena about the various ways he had worked towards getting what he wanted. Especially through the physicality of things. It of course, wouldn't work on the hunter either, considering she was happily settled with Nate after years of turmoil and well...Damon was Damon. Allison hadn't a clue - nor a care - to who he was with.
"You sound uncertain. Perhaps you knew her right, given you've been alive for..well God knows how long." Allison retorted, finally taking the chance to look up at the Salvatore and his 'infamous' smirk. Somehow it annoyed her. But she couldn't place a reason as to why. Feeling him trail after her, the Argent felt an eye roll coming along. She couldn't explain it, but spending time having a conversation with Damon Salvatore was far from interesting for her.
"When have you..Mr Salvatore been friendly?" She questioned, brow raising at his snort. "We merged enough. I speak to Elena, to Stefan and everyone. You're just barely around enough for me to speak to, to even have a decent conversation." It felt true enough, plus Allison had shielded herself for a few years from the real stress that college brought along. Of course that meant nothing to a vampire though...
"Wild West?" She questioned once more, ignoring the comment about her father. Everyone and anyone knew how overprotective Chris Argent was, but there wasn't much reason to debate the topic. He would simply do anything for his family...Right? "Are you talking about the disappearances?" She added, stopping in her place and finally indulging in whatever Damon wanted.

Unlike Katherine, the Argent doppelgangers didn’t seem to like playing games with their identities. Katherine was like a kid in comparison, throwing on costumes, twisting people around her little finger with a coy smile. Allison was far more like Tatia or Elena, exuding that air of wariness, making it clear that this wasn’t going to be a case of mistaken identity - hoping that they weren’t the one he’d actually been looking for.
Rumours of the Salvatore brothers had probably reached her family’s ears long before she’d turned up in town and it had become obvious that she had a doppelganger out there. Through Katherine they’d been tied to the Original family and Mikaelson was a name on every hunter’s lips, although none of them had tried to take them down since they’d arrived in town – more's the pity.
Damon’s lips twitched higher at the corners as she inched away from him. Oh, she didn’t have to worry, it wasn’t like he was gonna try and get too friendly, or take a nibble. Not somewhere this public, especially since he valued his head staying on his shoulders. He shook his head slowly, the smile staying put. ”Oh, I think I’d know if we had met. I might be old, but I’m not senile. I don’t know her.” Given how Marie-Jeanne had gone after her own brother, Damon doubted she looked too kindly on vampires, especially ones who’d made their own brother’s life a misery for a century.
His punishment of Stefan had been infamous, his manipulation of the people in this town afterwards even more so. Gossip passed from judgy tongue to even judgier ear, each word trying to blacken his reputation a little further. He narrowed his eyes at Allison as her brows rose. ”I haven’t been there to defend myself, you mean. Let me guess Bonnie and the others told you all about my scandalous behaviour. Not one word of praise from any of them, huh?” Stefan might’ve tried to take some of the heat out of the words, but the others hadn’t had a good thing to say about him since he’d practically worked Bonnie’s grandmother to death to try and save Katherine. One day, faaaar in the future, he’d either have redeemed himself, or they’d go to their graves still hating him. Either way he’d have said it was no skin off his nose. Damon slipped his hands into the pockets of his jeans as they drew to a stop, his grin draining away as she threw his question back at him. He’d meant in a far more general way, but now she’d opened the question up, he wasn’t gonna back away. ”I meant everybody fighting for their piece of the supernatural pie, but you meant something specific.” And she’d tell him about it if she wanted him to stop tailing her home. ”Who’s taking people now? I’m gonna lay money on it not being the Dread Doctors.” They’d been operating here for a couple of years now, despite their attempts to stop them after they’d turned Matt into a kitsune. All they needed was more people ready to slice and dice the arrogant in this town.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ AS DAMON MENTIONED HE DID not know her doppelgänger, Allison Argent felt a small pang of relief lift from her chest. She couldn't help but feel flushed and resort to anger if she was compared to a woman she had been avoiding to simply confront. But there were the odd times the Argent heard some kind of conversation or flyby topic about someone looking incredibly similar to her from a passbyer. Especially during her college days. Not that..her doppelgänger had any importance or interest in being around a college campus...
Regardless, Allison was very keen to shut all kinds of rumours down. She had heard the games Katherine Pierce would play regarding Elena's own identity and the Argent had fought for years for her own independence, let alone her identity. "Not a single word." She added, feeling her own lips rise. The hunter could of course have her own opinion about the Salvatore, but given she was out of touch with supernatural for a little while, it felt better going off the word of mouth. That and Damon Salvatore was famous no matter where you want. The town's stud had a wonderful reputation after all.
"More like Elena..Caroline and Bonnie all had their own opinions. You failed with flying colours..Congratulations?" Realising she had somewhat dug a hole for herself as Damon managed to spin the conversation around again, Allison tutted quietly. She didn't know much, simply from what she had heard from her bedroom or when passing by her father as he muttered down the phone to whoever. Knowing that however she answered would probably be her gate way into getting home, the Argent let out a quiet sigh, deciding to be truthful.
"I don't..know much. I just..overhead this so don't go..spreading gossip like the towns newspaper.." Looking over her shoulder again before up at Damon, Allison rocked on the back of her feet. "Dread Doctors are..well..gone...apparently. Whatever or..whoever's sweeping people off the streets now isn't the same technique that the Dread Doctors used to use.."

At the rate he was going, Damon figured he was gonna hit 500 years old before he got any forgiveness from Bonnie and the others – a point at which most of them would likely be in the ground. The stories about the mean vampire who ruined their lives would be passed down from generation to generation. Until then they’d likely just go around town, screaming out about the dangers of Damon Salvatore from the rooftops. No amount of praise from Stefan, Elena and Claire was gonna be loud enough to drown the rest of it out.
”All bad hmm. You know there’s something to be said for forming your own opinions.” The smirk he aimed at her probably wasn’t gonna do much to change Allison Argent’s opinion of him though. She’d already made up her mind and that was to be suspicious around him. She could smile all she wanted, he could practically feel it radiating off of her. A predator’s sense of the people who might end up prey, and those who might end up doing the preying on him. The Argents weren’t as reckless as most hunting families, but they still had a reputation that stretched back even further than the Salvatore name.
Damon hummed low in his throat before he chuckled. Bonnie was never going to let go of the idea that he’d been the one to kill her grandmother. In her eyes he was forever damned and no endorsement from Elena was going to change that. ”Oh I’m sure Elena’s got at least one tiny speck of praise for me now,” he drawled lightly. ”I’m sure I earned the damnation from the others.” But that was what repentance was for. Didn’t they preach that for addiction now? Admit all your wrongs, try and make that crap up to people, as though a sad face and a my bad would make up for the sort of crap he’d pulled when he’d first arrived back in town. Digging into what was going on in town didn’t mean he was gonna try and actually fix any of it. With so many hunters around that absolutely wasn’t his place, but it didn’t mean he wasn’t gonna try and keep the people he actually did care about from whatever was happening out there. The disappearances hadn’t been something he’d paid too much attention to, other than seeing the constant headlines. It seemed as though Allison had heard more about it though. Damon scoffed, shaking his head. ”There’s plemty of that in the newspapers already. People vanishing around here isn’t new.” The Dread Doctors had been doing that for years, only letting people come back once they’d been transformed.
”So what is it?” Damon asked, feeling faintly uneasy. ”If you say mountain lions I’m gonna start questioning your family’s ability to see through all this supernatural bullcrap.” As though people like the Argents would honestly deal in rumours. ”Who’s gone and what took them?” Surely the fact that they knew it was happening meant that they had a clue what it was.
