━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ THERE WASN'T A DAY THAT passed where she was glad to be dating Nate Bryant. Despite their breakup for a few years, a few arguments here and there, Allison was nothing but grateful for it all. Having finally being free from college and the stress that came with being an 'ordinary' teenager in a life filled with the supernatural, the academic stressed had finally turned into working in the real world.
Thanks to Nate also, Allison was able to meet Dylan Cooper various times which only resulted in a brief conversation followed by the start of the role she had now. Now here she was, a few months into being a graduate and into an actual law firm, taking on any case she could get her hands on - as well as what Dylan allowed her of course. There were the ups and downs to being a lawyer, but the awkward thing about it was finding the time to practice her hunter skills alongside her father and even catch up with Nate. But hey, that was the real world after all.
Arriving early at the time she usually did, the Argent checked in and made her way into the unit where Cooper's firm was. Being reminded that the space was rather small, with his office and a desk set up for her own work, the Argent was still nothing more than grateful for the consideration Dylan put in. Dylan had reminded her that she didn't always need to be in so early, and while she was thankful for the gesture, the more time she was able to put towards the case at hand was more than enough.
Though what the hunter didn't expect was someone else in the office, sitting in the chair at her desk. It seemed like the male was waiting for Dylan to turn up, but did he need to choose that seat? "Hello?.." She spoke, brow raising in slight confusion. "Mr Cooper probably won't be here for..half-an-hour or so..if that's who you're waiting for?"

If there was one of them who was going to follow their parents into the court room side of the law, it was gonna have to be Clio. So far she didn’t seem to have shown much interest in it, but there was still time for her to change her mind. At this point if he or Eros did (which was even less likely than him having a change of heart), they’d likely be the oldest people in their law school class, and his career, at least, would flame out soon after. Anybody who knew how he lived up to his name could easily predict how he’d lose his temper in court and ending up in contempt of court every five minutes made for an incredibly short time between passing the bar and being kicked out of it.
Maybe it was a miracle that he hadn’t been kicked out of the sheriff’s department yet. Claire was his sanity on the job, the one person who could pull him back when he started to charge into situations he probably should’ve considered first. She wasn’t always there though, and Ares knew that one of these days that was likely to catch up with him. He’d pull his weapon on the wrong person or would get on the bad side of something even worse than the demon who’d caught him using his magic. No matter how much belief he had in his having his nine lives w0uld save his hide then.
Unlike him Dylan Cooper seemed to have the temperament to work on the other side of the law. The guy had a decent reputation down at the station for being one of the good lawyers, not the kind who’d get a tyrant off the hook if he thought it’d fill his pockets. They were a rarity in his experience. It should also mean the guy wouldn’t argue too hard when he tried to get a peek at one of the cases that he’d picked up. Attorney-client privilege would probably hide most of the details, but Cooper might open up just enough for him to figure out if this guy was connected to the other robberies that had happened in town.
Dropping Cooper’s name and his badge at the front desk got him sent upstairs in the building without reception insisting on calling ahead. That was fine with him, it would give Cooper less time to decide not to give him a little sneak peek. Unexpectedly the office was empty when he walked in. Alright, maybe he’d come a little earlier than most offices opened up, but he had to work later, and he didn’t want to have to bug out and come back if Cooper kept him waiting half the day.
Ares resisted poking through the stuff on the desks, but settled himself in the chair behind one of them all the same. Maybe Cooper had just popped out to grab a coffee. It took ten minutes before someone appeared and by then he was already bouncing one leg as he stared at the door. The minute the woman appeared, he stilled and offered her a faint smile. ”Hey,” he drawled. ”I figured I might’ve been a little early, but, yeah, I was hoping to grab a few minutes with him.” Ares narrowed his hazel eyes at the woman before he leaned forward, propping his elbows on the edge of the desk that wasn’t his. ”Maybe you can help me instead. I’m looking to get some information on a case Mr Cooper’s handling. The client’s name is Jimmy McLeod. Do you know who I’m talking about?” Dark brows rose, if she was Cooper’s assistant she should recognise the name at least.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ GIVEN HOW CASUAL THE MAN was, Allison believed it was safe to assume that he was at least acquainted or even friends with her boss. Of course, the Argent had come across her..fair share of odd people, but given the 'professional' environment she was now in, things were different. The only thing that truly irked the hunter was the males choice of seating. It was the only seat she had in their entire office, given their small size of course.
Jimmy McLeod was a familiar name, but given the small amount of time Allison had with the cases and overall the job experience, she couldn't simply recall all the details of the McLeod file from her mind. "Yes, I'm aware." She began, placing her things down on the desk the man had decided to prop his elbows on. "Though I won't be able to access much as I don't have access to neither Mr Cooper's computer nor my own as you are..in my seat."
Allison smiled then, moving to flicker on the lights to their small office and somewhat make herself more comfortable in the tight-spaced area. The Argent couldn't ask for a better opportunity, but she simply hoped they did move offices altogether at some point. "May I question as to..why you need this case? Or any jurisdiction that you may hold for it..?" It was a valid question, considering the man was just..an unknown visitor in the early morning.

Asking around about Dylan Cooper had revealed that he’d only been in town a couple of years. The guy seemed to have made the move here from Chicago right after he’d passed the bar exam. For someone without a whole lot of experience he seemed to have picked up clients rapidly enough. A few might’ve been from old money here, although they tended to stick with the same firm their great-great-great grandpappy had employed back in 1850. Most, Ares imagined, were young and broke enough that someone with lower rates would’ve been appealing. Cooper was obviously smart, polite too and that went a long way with charming people. Ares knew that he could call himself the same, but his brand of charm still tended to run thin pretty damn soon. That was where Claire came in handy.
Without his partner now, Ares had to squelch the smile of satisfaction that bit when the girl admitted that she knew who Jimmy McLeod was at least. Clinging on to attorney-client privilege Cooper might not even have admitted that much. He certainly wouldn’t have shared any details of what his client might’ve admitted to, not even with a court order, and he definitely hadn’t obtained one of those.
One corner of Ares’ mouth quirked up at the corners. ”I can wait for that. Sometimes those first impressions about a person can be enough to start you off, you know?” And the one he’d given by taking over her seat probably meant he was gonna end up walking out of here entirely empty handed. Glancing down like he’d just realised what he’d done, Ares shot her an apologetic look and pushed to his feet. ”Sorry, I was nosing around. I was just … waiting.” As usual he’d taken a step too far though.
As the assistant moved around the office, Ares rounded to the other side of the desk, slipping his hands into the pockets of his combat pants. Maybe coming in uniform would’ve made the whole thing more official, but that might’ve suggested that he had more legal backing here than he actually did have. This was being done as a favour for one of the FBI agents, and to satisfy his own sense of curiosity. The girl was quick enough to show her own and Ares huffed out a breath. Busted.
Lifting the hem of his t-shirt, Ares revealed the badge-fold clipped on his waistband. He flipped it open, revealing his sheriff’s office ID inside. ”Officer Ares Patera.” If she’d read McLeod’s file she might end up recognising the name. ”I was involved in Mr McLeod’s arrested.” His involvement had ended there, but then he’d ended up having his interest piqued in it again. ”I know that Mr Cooper can’t share too much about what his client has told him, but I’m trying to link McLeod to another case and thought that your boss might be willing to help. What do you know about Mr McLeod?” He tried to make it sound like a friendly enquiry rather than the full on interview it might’ve been if they’d done this at the station instead.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ ALLISON KNEW BY GIVING INFORMATION that the officer wanted would be somewhat breaking the confidentiality that Dylan set between himself, his staff and his clients would be a stupid choice. Though, the hunter knew she had to play into the man's plan just a little further, in order to see what he would bite back with what she was providing. The first impression she had gotten from the man wasn't the best kind anyway, so as he rose, apologising for taking her seat initially, the Argent rolled her eyes internally.
Taking her seat with a quiet 'thank you' leaving her lips, Allison adjusted herself before powering up the desktop. She had to be quick with her fingers and even her thoughts, considering one wrong move or even the wrong choice of words would leave her suspicious and out in the open. She was just as curious in this case, but more so why this man who was..seemingly a police officer was more intrigued. As Mr Patera showed off his badge, Allison had to refrain from letting her brows rise in question. But remaining calm, she answered his questions anyway.
"Probably as much as the public do Officer. That he was arrested for questionable things amongst other means. More comments that I'm aware of are in the film which I can try having an access to now." Typing away at the computer as she logged in, the Argent looked out of the corner of her eyes and up at the man. "By chance..do you have a warrant for this? Mr Cooper is very serious about his lawyer-client confidentiality, it won't be easy to convince him for such details."

As a cop taking advantage of the naivety (and occasional) idiocy of people was a bit of a grey zone. Sometimes it got you the answers you needed, but it left you feeling like crap for taking advantage of those who obviously didn’t know better. Sometimes you got away with it, hanging them with their own rope, so to speak. In Miami there’d been plenty of criminals of the patently dumb kind and it had made his first few months on patrol feel like he was shooting fish in a barrel. Maybe if he’d have stuck it out there he’d have eventually worked his way up, turning those easy arrests into something a little more complicated, a little more serious. In a few years he could’ve become Detective Patera. He’d have had a detective’s badge, a cheap suit and probably a warrant to get himself the answers he needed. Only, he’d moved, hadn’t he?
There was a better class of criminal in Mystic Falls, along with so much more. There might still be some who were too naïve, or too young, to know better than to say too much to a cop, but the rest were savvy. It made those easy cases a thousand times harder than they had to be. Throw the FBI into that and it left him in this situation. Ares continued the charm offence, smiling at her as he made his way back to the right side of the desk.
Crap. He’d taken a chance on her not being as savvy as her boss, but the moment his badge was tucked away again, she was drawing lines he couldn’t legally cross. Ares kept up the half smile, but on the inside it had vanished almost entirely. Film? ”It never hurts to ask. Sometimes you know more than you think you might, especially when there’s video evidence.” Or when you were speaking to someone who hadn’t locked down quite as hard on their client’s information as they should’ve done.
Ares took a half step in, trying to keep his interest from showing on his face again. If he looked too keen it would likely get serious fast. He crossed his arms over his chest, chuckling lightly as she asked if he had a warrant. ”We don’t need a warrant for a conversation, do we?” he asked lightly. A faint frown creased Ares’ forehead. ”You said what you knew was in the public domain, right? If this is available elsewhere, there shouldn’t be any problem with letting me have a little peek now. I’m sure Mr. Cooper would agree with you if he was here.” Chances were, he’d be out of the office already if the guy was. Digging was dangerous, especially when there was a chance the lawyer would turn right around when this went to court to accuse him of overstepping the lines. They’d call it a witch hunt, completely unaware of that was practically what it was.
