’What made you think you would get something for nothing?’
He’d heard Chiara’s laughter ringing in his ears as he’d left Tristan’s apartment. His shoulders had risen up around his ears as he’d scurried away, watching for the myriad of threats that were lurking out there for him as he’d headed for the safety of his basement. Aurora had started warning him about her brother almost a century ago, which meant he hadn’t walked in blindly, but he hadn’t exactly been well prepared.
Enzo cracked his door and checked the alleyway before he scurried along it – his little deal with Tristan didn’t mean he wasn’t still more rat than vampire. He might have the protection of both de Martels and the Strix now, but they hadn’t got rid of his problems for him yet. It was like they were all waiting for a threat to pop up like a jack in the box, kicking everything into motion.
The dark windows of the buildings he passed on his scurry down the back streets threw twisted reflections back at him. Enzo checked in each of them, his dark eyes flicking away from his own reflection most of the time. The windows didn’t show an emaciated creature anymore. There might not’ve been enough opportunity in town yet for him to gorge himself – he’d wait until he back to New York to do that and then anybody Chiara sent after him would be delivered to her doorstep like a cat offering up its kills to its owners. Chiara wouldn’t pat him on the head for it anymore, but he had to do something to prove to her that he was done paying for his supposed crimes and given that the baby witch and warlock hadn’t shown up again, his options were limited.
No sign of a tail, not even a glimpse of the werewolf. It didn’t mean that there wasn’t one – the members of the Strix were meant to be the best of the best after all – but he didn’t think there was. Tristan might not entirely trust him with his little sister, he seemed to trust others less though. Somewhere out there Aurora’s boyfriend was sniffing around and so for the moment he was the problem. Maybe Tristan expected him to be delivered like that. A body on the doorstep of that fancy apartment building would create one hell of a scene.
And Aurora would never forgive him for it.
Puffing out a breath, Enzo steeled himself for the quick trip across the square. He might owe something to Tristan de Martel now, but he and Aurora had connected long before now and his loyalty to her was unshakable. The entire way across the itch raged between his shoulder blades. Halfway there a woman had rushed across the grass in front of him, leaving him taking a quick step back. She didn’t even look in his direction. Why worry about a random bloke in a town that looked like this?
By the time he reached Aurora’s building the twitchiness had started to fade, but he still lingered by the elevator for a few minutes to make sure that nobody had followed him here. All he needed was for Tristan to tail him right to Aurora and her boyfriend instead of trusting the reports he was gonna get of ‘nah, not seen him around’.
Eventually he thumbed the button and rode up in silence. The hall was empty, but he was sure he could hear movement behind Aurora’s apartment door. He knocked, that faint smile curving his lips as he thought he sensed motion on the other side. Enzo straightened up as the door opened, his smile turning wry. ”Don’t worry, I didn’t bring his army with me. I didn’t talk to your brother though. Can I come in?” He doubted that she’d be surprised that her brother had put someone on her tail. It might shock her that he’d been the one to take Tristan up on his offer though.

Enzo needed the sort of protection Aurora couldn’t provide on her own. He’d made an enemy of a few witches, but she knew someone with their own witches. Tristan. They could help keep Enzo hidden. But there was an inherent risk that introducing Enzo to Tristan would result in him becoming some kind of lackey, as he was a lot younger than the rest of the Strix. She couldn’t protect him alone though. Explaining to Tristan how she knew Enzo was delicate. For starters, he was a man so immediately Tristan probably assumed Enzo was trying to steal his sister away from him, but she managed to convince him that wasn’t the case. Secondly, they met after she escaped a mental institution Tristan had locked her in. She shared part of the truth with him. They met in New York, back in the early nineteen hundreds, but hadn’t seen each other since. Aurora just assumed Enzo had relocated to another part of the world, she never imagined he was imprisoned by someone even more unhinged than Aurora. She didn’t share that with Tristan though, leaving it up to Enzo what he wanted to tell Tristan. Another problem with hand delivering Enzo to her brother was he would assign him the task to spy on Aurora because the other members of the Strix have been told to do the same thing. All of them failed to gather any important information though because she was far too coy for them. She’d evaded Mikeal Mikaelson for a century, so evading a couple of vampires younger than her wasn’t exactly a hard task. So Enzo could try and gather intel on Aurora, but ultimately he would fail. Not only was she coy, so was Damien. She was forever grateful she’d fallen in love with a man who could disappear instantly and keep himself hidden from the naked eye. There was a light knock at the door, having her second guessing who was there. Tristan had keys and Damien didn’t need them. Aurora balanced on her tiptoes, peering through the peephole. She broke into a small smile as she unlatched the door, pulling it open. “You should be wary. He may have installed a tracking device inside of you.” She stepped aside, “Please come inside.” Quickly before anyone spotted him outside of Aurora’s apartment without seeking permission from Tristan before. Paranoia wasn’t a new emotion for him. It’d clung to him like a bad smell when he’d been tossed onto the streets after he’d aged out of the workhouse. If you weren’t watching your back on the streets then you might as well have been holding your shirt up out of the way to make it easier for the blade to be slipped between your ribs. Lily hadn’t had the time to explain it in the end, but Chiara had once she’d taken him under her wing – as a vampire your emotions were heightened, and that included things like paranoia. Your mind was consumed with feelings, driving you mad if you let them. He hated thanking her for anything, but Chiara had taught him how to channel those emotions, even if she had heightened some of them for her own good.
Enzo had tried to balance the feeling that he was about to be lured into a trap with common sense as he’d stood in front of Tristan in the lobby of his building. Revealing weakness to a man like him was a sure way to feel a fist in his chest a moment before his heart was torn out instead of a knife in his back. Like his former boss, Tristan might want to ramp up the paranoia later, to keep himself safe, but until he did, what he needed was stable, smart employees, people who were loyal to him.
Huffing out a breath, Enzo stood at Aurora’s door and waited for her to answer. In a way Tristan was getting that, but his loyalty was certainly more to the guy’s sister than it was to him. Aurora had been the one to set up the meeting, the one who’d helped keep him out of sight on the night that he’d escaped the Augustine facility. If she told him to ignore Tristan’s orders, he’d do it and would undoubtedly pay for it later. The de Martels might’ve been prettier than the Meraviglias, but beauty didn’t change the cost of things when you were working for somebody else.
He straightened up as Aurora opened the door, slipping his hands into the pockets of his jacket as he stood in front of her. Aurora might not have been expecting him to turn up at her door with Tristan half a dozen steps behind him, but he thought it best to ward off the idea immediately.
”I always am, don’t worry. I spent more than 50 years with people trying to insert things under my skin. He’d have had a fight on his hands if he’d even tried it.” It would’ve been suicidal considering he’d been in the lion’s den so to speak, but he wouldn’t stand for any more torture. Still, Enzo shrugged his shoulders beneath his leather jacket as he stepped inside, now second guessing every hand shake, every moment one of Tristan’s people had gotten a little too close to him.
And there it was, that paranoia that had him moving away from the door so that Aurora could close it behind him. He lingered just inside, his gaze ticking around what he could see of the apartment before it settled on her again. Aurora knew her brother better than him, if she saw a reason to worry about what he might’ve done, then he would be too. ”Did he call you after I spoke to him?” he asked lightly, wondering if Tristan would’ve bothered trying to tell his sister that he planned on adding to the surveillance he had on her. ”He gave me my first assignment, probably looking to see just how much I’m willing to tell him. I’m meant to be following you, trying to find out who your boyfriend is.” He didn’t know who the guy was, but even if he had already heard, he wasn’t about to turn the news over just to try and get further into Tristan’s good books.

It wasn’t hard for vampires to get on the wrong side of the witches. Just existing was usually enough. Tristan was clever though, collecting witches who had been shunned by their coven for various reasons. Ones who were willing to practise dark magic and work against their species beliefs. So, whatever witches were after Enzo they wouldn’t stand a chance against Tristan’s witches. He carefully picked out the most powerful ones. There was a chance that Enzo had signed away his freedom by joining Tristan’s gang of vampires, but it was the best place for him to be. Yes, they were a group of savage killers but they were loyal to each other. They’d die for one another. Of course it wasn’t a permanent placement. If Enzo wanted out at any point he could, but Tristan never took kindly to people trying to leave The Strix. He’d been gunning for Hector’s blood for centuries for the very same reason. He saw it as an act of betrayal. Perhaps it was frustrating for The Strix to be bound to such strict rules when Aurora could do as she pleased, to an extent. Tristan tried to control her, giving her a set of rules she was to follow herself, but they were broken almost instantly. She refused to be bound by stupid rules such as no draining humans in daylight in public. Tristan tried to keep his sister in check regardless. It was a pleased surprise to find Enzo standing at her front door. She offered him a sympathetic smile in response to his comment. Fifty years in captivity was enough to send a person crazy. Aurora would have completely crumbled. She started to get itchy feet after a few months, if she was conscious enough to realise where she was. Once the vervain worked its way out of her system though she was looking for ways to escape. “How a person can do that to another person is beyond me.” They were beings with feelings at the end of the day. They were still capable of feeling pain and weren’t there to be experimented on. Aurora made her way into the living room, lowering herself down onto the couch. Her hand waved towards the free armchair in the room, offering Enzo the seat. “Nope. Not a word from Tristan on that front.” He was the first to preach the fact they were siblings and therefore shouldn’t hide anything from each other, but there was so much he was hiding from Aurora. She knew that, but didn’t bother to question it. She broke into a wide grin, “Well you will struggle to find any evidence of a boyfriend here. I have told Tristan plenty of times that I am not courting anyone.” Now she was faced with the dilemma, was she to trust Enzo? His loyalties lay with Tristan now, but would he stab Aurora in the back so quickly? “What does Tristan think he knows so far?” He’d been sniffing around town, trying to get answers from people, but she didn’t know how much he knew about her life. Kindness wasn’t entirely unknown to him. As a child there’d been moments of it, a treat sneaked to him by one of the work house staff, an extra penny thrust into his dirty palm out on the streets, but then and later, as he’d come to know the true scope of cruelty in the world, they had just been breadcrumbs of charity, of joy. Tiny tasters that left you hungry for more, but without a way of finding yourself at the table for a feast. Always hungry, always desperate, never satisfied.
Given the way Maxfield had worked, perhaps he’d thought the same. Little measures of progress, of excitement as his experiments showed promise. Never total success – thank God. They were enough to keep the man working when anybody else would’ve quit long ago and left the pitiful wretches they had torn apart and continually stitched back together to die. He’d begged for it, unashamedly. As he’d stood in front of Tristan today, Enzo was sure he’d heard that same tone to his voice. Pathetic, but necessary if he ever wanted Chiara to leave him be. Like Maxfield she’d never be satisfied with just a pound of his flesh, she wanted his whole carcass. What was left of it at least.
Enzo shrugged his shoulders, almost uneasy at the thought. The old witch would make what Maxfield had done to him look like nothing more than a scraped knee. He could still feel the sting and bite of what Maxfield had done, buried deep in his flesh and his memories. His lips twitched faintly as he looked up at Aurora. ”When you’re truly a monster you don’t see others as people. They’re toys to be broken. Experiments. If everything goes right they might be your little trophy, but in the end they’re not gonna be satisfied with just that.” They always wanted more. A hunger burning in them that was worse than the one that burned in the two of them. Following Aurora into her apartment, Enzo tried to shove the thought of what he was escaping from his mind. There was a chance he was throwing himself from another frying pan into another fire (or should that have been from one fire to another), but he’d take the chance that this time it would be different. His eyes narrowed, a low sound rolling up from his throat as he sat where Aurora had indicated. ”Do you think that’s a bad sign?” he asked, winging a brow at her. It had always seemed as though her brother always tried to keep one hand on the wheel of his sister’s life where he could. Maybe this was the test to see who he was loyal to. Not mention a word to Aurora, wait and see if he ran straight over here to tell her everything he’d seen. His gaze ticked restlessly around the place. He wouldn’t have been wrong if that was really in his mind. His allegiance was to Aurora after all.
Enzo braced his elbows on his knees, watching Aurora’s lips stretch into a wide grin. Well, it looked like she was staying positive about the whole thing at least, even if there was a risk that Tristan would eventually discover who her boyfriend was. He snorted, shaking his head. ”He doesn’t believe you,” he said simply. ”He’s sure that something’s going on and I don’t think he’s going to stop until he gets a name.” Which he wouldn’t be getting from him. Aurora was savvy and had obviously been dancing out of her brother’s reach for quite some time.
Hands spread in the air, Enzo huffed out something approaching a laugh. ”I’m not gonna be looking too hard anyway. I figure who you’re in a relationship with is your business.” Tristan obviously didn’t feel the same way. His sister’s life was his to shield, even if she was constantly trying to squirm out from beneath that protection. ”Very little,” Enzo admitted. ”I think he suspects it has to be someone supernatural to stay out of sight the way they have. Maybe another vampire, maybe he thought it was me at first – as though I’d be stupid enough to walk into the lion’s den to see how far I could stick my hand down his throat. Has he sent his people to follow you before?” If he had, perhaps he had information he hadn’t chosen to pass along today. He had to give him enough rope to hang himself with after all.

It was surprising Aurora hadn't been swallowed into a world of paranoia caused by her brother. Possibly due to the fact he didn’t pose any real danger to her. He wasn’t going to drive a stake through her heart or remove it. The worst he would do is keep her locked up for prolonged periods of time, stripping away her freedom because she couldn’t be trusted with it. But at least Tristan didn’t drag a knife down her torso, removing organs just to see what would happen to her. Although just because he wasn’t the one inflicting the pain didn’t mean she wasn’t in physical pain. “In the fifteen hundreds the psychiatrists would often bleed me out or throw me into an ice bath in an attempt to rid me of my demons.” She commented. Although they weren’t monsters, only doing what was in line with medicine back then. They saw her as the monster, especially when she regained enough strength to tear through their necks. “You are safe with me and my brother though. This man will never come near you again.” It wasn’t some empty promise either. Aurora was adamant to keep Enzo safe. Sometimes Tristan fell into spells of silence because he was so engrossed with his plan to kill Klaus and his siblings. Those moments provided her with a sense of relief because he wasn’t breathing down her neck. Then after a while he would drag her into his plans, telling her about a new idea he’d had. She shrugged, “He is probably busy for now.” If Aurora picked up the phone though he would be over in a heartbeat. Never too busy for his little sister. “I am guessing you know more about what he is up to though. He tends to keep me isolated from any The Strix business… my female fragile brain cannot handle such things.” She said with a smile. It wasn’t true though. Tristan knew his sister could become too emotionally involved in things, i.e. Klaus. By now she had ridden herself of him though, but she couldn't share that with Tristan without telling him about Damien. He wouldn’t accept that she’d just moved on without someone else in line. Aurora laughed lightly, crossed one knee over the other as she settled into the couch. “Of course he does not believe me. People say I am the one riddled with paranoia but Tristan certainly takes top spot.” He lashed out in different ways though, but for the most part of it kept his emotions contained. “Then I shall give him a name.” Her mind started to whirl through the potential people she’d could throw in her brother’s direction, ultimately signing their death certificate with such a move. For now her mind was blank though. Her face softened at Enzo’s comment. It was her business. Something she didn’t want to share with the world, for now. It pained her that she and Damien were forced to keep their relationship a secret. It wouldn’t take long for Tristan to figure out it was someone supernatural. Aurora wouldn’t be falling in love with a human. “He knows I would not be foolish enough to send you to work for him if we were together.” If he suspected something of Enzo it was even more reason to give a name. “Oh he is always sending people to follow me. They are either following me or looking for me.” Some of them would be quick enough to grab Aurora too, dosing her with vervain to drag her back to her brother. ENZO ST JOHN

Enzo’s lips thinned, the muscles in his jaw flexing as Aurora spoke of her own torture. Men and women had always been cruel, inflicting pain not a modern affliction. He’d gleaned enough of what had happened the first time he’d seen her to have seen echoes of his own suffering in her, but this was so much more. It had been some monster snatching her from the streets. It had been her own brother’s attempt at dealing with her, willingly handing her over to those people. He’d have voiced his doubts about just how much protection Tristan would offer if he ended up faced with an old, powerful and furious witch, but he swallowed them down. No matter what had happened, Aurora was still loyal to his brother and after all that had happened, he was loyal to her. ”It is appreciated,” he said roughly, dipping his head to her. ”In return, you have all the protection I can offer.” That promise would stretch thinner when it came to Tristan, but in a best case scenario he would never find that out.
For the moment much of Tristan’s business was none of his business. That was one of the mistakes he had made with Chiara, he had become too close to the family, the stakes too high before all went wrong. Agreeing to play bodyguard to Aurora probably already left him too close to the line, but it had seemed like it would be of benefit to both himself and her. Enzo huffed out a breath, something vaguely amused in his dark eyes. ”So far, little more than I think you might. If he chooses to involve me in Strix business, I’ll accept the offer, but I think he trusted my newcomer brain as little as your female brain. Is there more than just that group that he’s dealing with in town?” He shifted uneasily for a moment. If there was one thing he didn’t need now, it was another target on his back.
Whoever it was that Aurora was in a relationship with already had one there. Maybe he didn’t know just how big it was yet, or just how happy Tristan would be to thrust his fist through that spot to snatch the heart that had captured his sister’s straight from that chest. Enzo linked his hands, tapping his thumbs lightly against one another. His lips had curved faintly, dark brows rising. ”You have someone to play sacrificial lamb then? If Tristan is that paranoid, would he accept that you’d just hand the name over that easily?” It was doubtful, but as long as he got to relieve a little of the frustration over not knowing, perhaps it would keep Tristan satisfied for a short time at least. The de Martels probably had enough enemies in this town that Aurora could find that lamb without too much trouble – enemies to lovers was still a thing, was it not?
What it had actually been between Aurora and this man was none of his business and as far as he was concerned, it was none of Tristan’s either. Aurora had been a grown woman for a thousand years, she was more than capable of deciding who was worthy of her. One corner of his mouth hitched higher. ”For my sake, I hope he does. Paranoia can tie you in knots.” Chiara had taught him that much at least. He should’ve held on to that lesson instead of allowing being in a cell to make him soft. ”Well, for now, I suppose I’ll be doing both. Is there anywhere I should avoid? You know, for safety’s sake? I wouldn’t want to stumble into any sorta trouble while I’m in town.” Or see something that he shouldn’t. He was already watching his back, scurrying around after dark to avoid whoever Chiara had sent after him, and because of the lack of a daylight ring on his finger. That was another problem he’d have to solve sooner rather than later.

There was a flicker of a smile on her face at Enzo’s promise. A man a fraction of her age offered her protection, but she wasn’t stupid enough to reject such an offer. Despite her age Aurora wasn’t invincible. When they first met there was evidence of this. Enzo could have probably taken down Aurora considering she was barely able to hold herself up straight. Her body was too busy trying to fight off the vervain pumping through her veins. Technically Enzo didn’t fit the criteria to join The Strix. It would take a while until the invitation was extended to him. It wasn’t just Tristan he needed to convince, but it was the rest of The Strix, who were so set in their ways that they weren’t going to be overly welcoming to a young vampire. Enzo had Aurora on his side though, which spoke volumes to the rest of the group. If Aurora trusted him then Tristan would eventually follow suit. “There are a few scattered around the world, but his most trusted members are here in town. They tend to follow him everywhere.” It was impressive he had convinced a group of ancient vampires to follow his every word. They were mainly bonded by their hate of the original family though. She had no problems sacrificing an innocent party to Tristan if it meant her and Damien were granted a moment's peace. Collateral damage unfortunately. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d dragged someone down into her business which resulted in their death. “I will find someone. Tristan will accept it if he believes he has coaxed the name out of me.” Over a thousand years at each other's side she knew exactly how her brother’s mind worked. If she convinced him he had the upper hand in their discussions, he would go and find the lamb. Their paranoia was somewhat warranted for Tristan and Aurora. They put their trust in a family who ended up compelling them into believing they were someone else. It left a deep scar on the two of them. For years Aurora struggled to comprehend what was reality in case someone had forced her to believe something different. It was reasonable for Enzo to feel a level of paranoia too, especially if he listened to the stories shared about Tristan. “Avoid that nightclub in town. My brother does not trust anyone who visits there. He may think you are in partnership with the owner whom he hates.” If Tristan latched onto the idea Enzo and Hector were working together then no amount of words from Aurora would save Enzo. Once upon a time he’d made a similar vow to Chiara that he would do all he could to protect her. She’d made threats to bring him on side, ones that he’d overlooked in the stupid desperation to get himself out of the gutter that Lily Salvatore had put him back into. The alarm bells had been ringing then, but he’d allowed himself to overlook them because there was the chance of a better life here. Enzo would’ve laughed at the thought now, but truthfully there was nothing funny about the grave he’d dug for himself. Giving in then had been a mistake, going to a man even more powerful to offer his allegiance this time wouldn’t be.
From what Aurora and Tristan himself had told him, The Strix was an organisation with strict loyalty to the man that led them now. Anybody who might turn against them wouldn’t just be expelled, they would die at Tristan’s hands. Maybe it was wishful thinking, but if that net of protection extended to him then Chiara and her people would have no hope of getting their hands on him. He’d tuck himself amongst Tristan’s people and would keep his head down, just one more anonymous henchman in a town that had to be full of them. ”And I’ll be one of them now, assigned to you, of course. It’s a smart set up.” And one that Chiara herself had used, but this wasn’t New York and it wasn’t 1940 anymore. Unless Chiara’s empire had remained standing, she no longer had the numbers to try and challenge Tristan’s might. A teenaged witch and her weedy sidekick had no hope. The same could likely be said for whatever sap Aurora tossed to Tristan like chum to a shark. There wouldn’t be enough left of whoever it was to be recognisable after Tristan was done with them. It was as though his sister was a saint, untouched and permanently untouchable. While he’d talked to Tristan, Enzo had treated her with exactly that sort of respect, maybe it had been bought, maybe it hadn’t. The corner of his mouth tipped up faintly. ”He did seem to expect you to put up a fight over it. Over agreeing to me looking out for you too.” Instead it had been just what he’d been hoping for. Respect for Tristan would have him taking the job seriously, loyalty to Aurora would have him following her lead on everything else. If all went well then eventually the pressure would be off of all three of them. Here, in her apartment, Enzo felt the pressure begin to lift. He relaxed back in his seat, the tension that he’d fought during the entire meeting melting away. He eased forward, his forearms on his knees. If there was anybody who knew how to watch their back in town it would be Aurora, after a lifetime of watching out for her own brother. ”Noted,” Enzo murmured, managing a faint chuckle. ”It’s not really my sort of place anyway. Looks like a breeding ground for the wrong sort.” Like the young witch and warlock who’d come to his cell. No amount of dark would hide him from them if they decided to turn up there. ”I should be going, but I’ll be in touch later to see when you want me to start watching out for you.” His smile flickered into place as he got up. He doubted he’d hear from her until the path was clear, what he hadn’t seen with his own eyes he couldn’t exactly pass on to her brother. ”Thanks for all of this,” Enzo said, looking back as he reached her apartment door. With a nod, he slipped out. He really did owe her now.
