This crazy Halloween party hosted by the club wasn’t advertised anywhere, but Eden overheard someone talking about it in Campbells Bar. It was an invite only kind of party and it was almost impossible for her to get an invite. Everyone she asked about it didn’t know what she was on about so her only option was to sneak inside, which kind of made her giddy. One thing that spun her out though was when she turned up to this party in her costume and not a single person had bothered dressing up. What the fuck kind of party was this? Immediately she was regretting her decision to come dressed as a cat. Yeah, the most basic Halloween outfit there was but she wanted to blend in, make it easier to sneak inside. She’d done the opposite though. Quickly she ripped the cat ears off her head and joined the back of the queue, silently cursing herself for not bringing a jacket. The American winters hit a lot harder than the Aussie ones. The temperature actually dropped below zero in this place. She kept herself glued to the people in front of her in the queue, hiding behind them once they reached the front and were asked a bunch of bizarre questions. In a stroke of luck she managed to slip past the bouncer. Quickly she headed to the bar, distancing herself from the entrance. Okay, the inside of this warehouse was even weirder. Not a single Halloween decoration in sight and no music either. There was just a cage in the middle, a pop up bar and that was it. The only Halloween themed thing she saw was blood bags for sale behind the bar. She asked the bartender what was actually inside the bags, but he kept in character telling her it was blood. It was tempting to buy one, but the mysterious alcohol in a plastic bag wasn’t that appealing. Instead she stuck to beer. So, that was supposed to be the Halloween event of the year? Jesus. The people of Mystic Falls needed a few lessons in how to throw a good party. She wasn’t about to call it a night too soon though. Maybe she’d arrived too early, before everything was due to kick off. Nervously, she sipped on her beer as her attention bounced around the warehouse. There was a sigh of relief when she spotted Phoebe at the other end of the bar. Eden practically bounce over toward Phoebe with a grin on her face. “Mate. No costume either?” There was a look of disappointment on her face as she gestured towards Phoebe’s attire, “Can’t lie this party is a little… quiet.”PHOEBE MURPHY

Hector probably would’ve scoffed at the idea, but the club needed an events coordinator. Last year’s Purge theme had shown some promise, but Lawrence had wrung his hands over her being there, which means she’d missed out. This year’s was worse – any appeal that might’ve hit over watching two hot men kick the crap out of one another was tempered by having to spend the night watching Lawrence’s back.
Kitty was probably enjoying it to a certain extent, at least since she’d spotted the bartender from the club in the crowd. The one she thought might’ve been sleeping with her at first, but apparently it wasn’t like that between the two of them. Unlike her, it seemed as though Kitty was smart with her love life. No sleeping with her brother’s best friend, someone naïve enough to think that one night together meant they were destined for a relationship – like either one of them was really in a position to handle that. Kitty wasn’t carrying the same sort of baggage, and thankfully hadn’t heard any of the tragic story of how poor Phoebe’s heart had hardened into a lump of coal.
Phoebe elbowed her way through the crowd again. This would’ve been a thousand times easier if it was Lawrence behind the bar and she could just talk him into giving her the bottle instead of having to deal with asking for another drink after every half dozen mouthfuls. The vodka went down fast, whatever it had ended up mixed with barely tasted. She handed the glass off to someone, not bothering to check whether or not they actually worked there. Her focus had been on Lawrence the entire time anyway, her gaze skittering past the cage that had been set up and the people milling around it as though they were waiting to be called up. Somehow she doubted any of them were gonna look be looking so confident about the whole thing when they were dragged out of the cage later, beaten to a pulp.
Violence had its place and her hands weren’t exactly spotless, but doing this stuff for fun was twisted in her book. You killed to protect yourself or others – that was one thing she’d held onto from her parents’ lessons. Taking a life left a mark on you and it was close to impossible to remove it. Phoebe slipped past some gigantic guy with a red beard – maybe someone would win if he went in – feeling her stomach twist at the thought. She’d spent years training herself not to think about Joshua with every breath, but telling Lawrence and Teddy about it all had stripped all of that control away and she’d ended up right back at the beginning again.
The bartenders were hustling behind the bar, the one she’d ordered from earlier up at the other end of it. Craning up on her tiptoes, Phoebe tried to wave down another. Others had probably been waiting longer, but they didn’t have a brother who worked for the club, did they? ”Two martinis, please,” Phoebe called the minute they looked her way, a smile sweetening the request a little further. There was a roll of eyes, probably because it was going to take longer than just grabbing one of those blood bags from the cooler or pouring a beer, but honestly, she’d stopped caring. This whole thing was leaving a bad taste in her mouth.
Movement came in from her right, leaving Phoebe raising a brow for the moment it took her to recognise the girl. As painfully human as Krista, definitely not made for a place like this. Phoebe glanced down at her own outfit, snorting faintly. It wasn’t exactly an every day fashion choice for her. ”Didn’t feel like it fit the theme,” she said, smirking. ”I’m guessing you didn’t know what that was.” But somehow Eden had managed to worm her way in all the same. If Hector found out then the bouncer was likely to end up part of the night’s entertainment in the cage. ”Watching people beating each other up isn’t your thing either?”
She glanced around. Lawrence was still there in the crowd, and while he was, she wasn’t gonna be moving. Getting Eden out and actually finding something better than a filthy warehouse and a cage would’ve been preferable, but Hannya would likely just latch on like a leech. ”Who’d you come with? I didn’t know anybody else who was supposed to be coming.” AKA, didn’t know that anybody would bring a human guest and break the rules.

American’s loooooved Halloween, so it didn’t make any sense that the party wasn’t decked with decorations. Eden expected actors in fancy dress and cobwebs everywhere, but nothing. It was underwhelming but she wasn’t going to let that affect her night. Maybe it was just Mystic Falls that didn’t celebrate. Nonetheless, she was still overly excited about it all. It would be better than a Hallowern party in Australia, that was certain. They usually just grabbed a few tinnies and headed down to the beach. Halloween during spring didn’t have the same feel to it, just like having Christmas during the height of summer. Sun beating down on them whilst they were trying to whip up a Christmas dinner. It was all she’d ever known until they ventured to the other side of the world where she swapped her swimsuit for her thermals. She had high hopes for Mystic Falls and she’d be lying if she said they hadn’t been dashed. The place was a little bizarre at times, but nothing to do with the supernatural. It was more the people. The place was filled with non-locals pouring in from other cities in America, yet Eden failed to see what was attracting these people to Mystic Falls. Maybe there was some supernatural pull she was unaware of. But so far they’d found nothing unnatural in the town. There was no rush to pack her bags and leave though. She’d kind of made herself comfortable there. The job at the Ice Cream Parlour was okay too, of course Daniel made the days fly by. The new owners were a little strange though. She tried to say hello to one of them and he just muttered to her in Spanish. The beer went down like juice, which could be a problem for future Eden. There was a temptation to just smash the beers, but she needed to keep sober to report back to her podcast any findings throughout her evening. It was Halloween afterall. Vampires could be crawling the streets now the sun had gone down. “It’s giving me an eighties vibe… but what I meant was like no spooky costume.” She finished the rest of her beer, placing it down on the bar nearby before turning back to Phoebe, “Beating each other up?” Her attention darted towards the cage in the middle of the warehouse, “Wait. Is this like some kind of boxing match shit?” Ugh, boring. She wanted music, hot girls in revealing outfits and vodka. It was kind of lame coming alone, but Eden didn’t want to risk dragging either Daniel or Billy along and all of them refused entry. This was a one man mission. “Just me. Did you get an invite? I had to sneak in.” She trusted Phoebe not to run off telling someone. PHOEBE MURPHY

Earlier in the year she’d been imagining throwing a party tonight. Free of Whitmore’s regulations finally, able to buy her neighbours’ approval again with liquor and an invite, it would’ve been a night to remember for the right reasons. Only Lawrence had found himself heart deep (or should that have been loin deep) in trouble again. She could’ve thrown some sort of a celebration, made sure he came to it instead of to this thing, but it couldn’t have cut him free of the claws that Hannya had in him right now.
Phoebe tossed her ratted blonde hair back from her face, smiling faintly at Eden’s half compliment. No costume didn’t mean foregoing dressing up altogether. ”I’ll take that,” she murmured. ”There was no way I was getting dressed up as a witch or a vampire, too cringe.” And all too close to the truth. Just the thought of it had what liquor she had drunk curdling in her stomach. There were probably only a handful of people in the crowd who weren’t something other than human beneath their relatively normal outfits. Most of them were probably centuries older than Eden and the human had no clue about it. Ignorance wasn’t going to save her life if things kicked off like they had last year.
Narrowed eyes swept the crowd, looking for Hector amongst them. If he spotted Eden and realised who she was, she’d be thrown out by some of the bruisers who’d been lurking at the door. ”It’s a fight club – you know, like that movie with Brad Pitt. Get a room full of people together, get them liquored up and let them beat the crap out of each other.” Maybe it was supposed to be hot, at least to the women in the crowd, but Phoebe hadn’t found her eye drawn to any of that. This was about Lawrence and that evil bitch who had her claws in him.
For Eden it was far worse. It wouldn’t take much to turn her into the goat chained to a stake, waiting for something big and bad to come along and eat her. Maybe that was why the bouncer had let her in. He knew these things were gonna be hungry when they were done. The fool. Shaking her head, Phoebe sipped at her drink, washing away the worry. She needed a clear head tonight, she didn’t need to be torn in two trying to protect two vulnerable people in her life. There was a chance that Lawrence could handle himself for the rest of the evening, but she hadn’t wanted to keep pushing back making him cut his ties with Hannya. Sooner or later the demon was going to totally corrupt her brother and what remained of the Lawrence she knew would start bleeding out of him.
The corners of her lips half lifted as she looked back at Eden. ”My brother works at the bar, I get an invite to every single one of these things – although, they’re usually a hundred times better than this.” Tilting her head back towards the door of the warehouse, Phoebe frowned a little. ”You sure you wouldn’t rather go somewhere else? I’m sure someone’s got a party going on at Whitmore. I can get us through the doors there, and you wouldn’t have to be bored to death by all of that.” She lifted her chin towards the cage, wondering how gross it was gonna have to get in there to turn Eden off of the idea. Blood and sweat would be painting the floor soon, the reek of it filling the air to the point where things started to salivate in here.

Her mom had tried desperately to shake Eden out of this obsession she had with the supernatural world. She was hoping her daughter would have grown out of it by now, but no Eden was more involved than ever. She’d sent a few episodes of her podcast to her parents to have a listen. Her dad enjoyed it, but her mom told Eden she needed to be careful. She didn’t want Eden to be labelled some nut job. Might have been a little too late for that, but who cared? People believe in fucking aliens and God so why couldn’t she believe in ghosts and witches? Eden clung onto her cat ears as took in Phoebe’s outfit. She didn’t even look out of place in the sea of people who couldn’t be bothered to dress up. To think, Eden almost considered putting some fake blood on her face to make her look like a dead cat. She truly thought she’d be the least made up person in the crowd. “Oh nah. A vampire or a witch is classic or a cat.” She held up her ears for a moment, “Such a basic bitch outfit, but I’m so last minute and Amazon next day delivery doesn’t exist here.” Although she couldn’t complain too much. In Australia they’d be waiting weeks for parcels to be delivered whereas in Boston you get your shit the same day. It wasn’t the outfit that was making her feel out of place. There was a weird vibe that hung in the atmosphere, like people weren’t actually there to party. They were there for something else. It was making her feel a little uncomfortable, but she stuck to it. For the research of course. But then Phoebe explained why it felt like no one was there to get smashed and dance. It was a fight club. “Far out… and people have signed up for that shit?” Why the fuck would someone want to get their ass kicked? You’d need to pay Eden to do something like that. A party at Whitmore did sound better than whatever party they were at right now. The students at Whitmore weren’t completely unhinged, but they could be fun, drinking out of those little fun red cups. But would there be people fighting in a cage? Certainly not. Eden wasn’t sure how she felt about watching two people swing punches at each other for fun. “Maybe after. I might stay and watch the first fight to see what the hype is about. Do you get something if you win?” Nice shiny medal to slip around your swollen face maybe. She’d personally want cold hard cash if she were to fight for something. Couple thousand dollars would be nice. Although she did find it a little strange she’d seen nothing about this fight advertised at the club or anyone in town talking about it. It was like the whole evening was hush hush. PHOEBE MURPHY

The costumes might’ve been classics if it wasn’t you every single day of the week. Phoebe’s eyes narrowed and scanned Eden from the black ears she held up right down to her toes. There were plenty of others who were probably going with the ironic look tonight, but she doubted Eden was amongst them. This whole wide eyed thing wasn’t an act, the girl genuinely had no clue that most of those things she chatted about on her podcast - yeah, she had checked out an episode or two - were real. Tonight was bad luck, Eden turning up in the wrong place at the wrong time (AKA the right place at the right time if she’d had a clue what was going on in front of her eyes. Phoebe snorted at the mention of Amazon next day delivery, but kept her little admission about having been those classics totally to herself.
Phoebe had never felt bashful in her life, had rarely even admitted out loud that she’d made a shitty decision (although there’d been some regrets since she’d arrived in Mystic Falls that lodged like gas under her diaphragm. Now, as Eden questioned people signing up to get their asses kicked, she winced. ”I guess there are plenty of masochists in this town. Or egotistical assholes who think they’ll hop in there without getting their asses kicked.” Hannya had probably put her name down, although mud wrestling seemed far more her thing. Thank God she had enough sense not to do it, just watching Lawrence tonight was gonna be hard enough.
Once the fights really started to kick off Eden was going to rapidly realise that things weren’t as simple as they seemed here. Costumes didn’t stay in place when you were throwing each other around, fake fangs were useless for tearing people’s throats out. All it would take was her gasping and someone in here was going to notice they had a meal right there. Maybe Hector would’ve urged a little caution on all of them if this was public, but the warehouse was just like the club last year – supposedly off limits to humans. Phoebe shook her head, her frown deepening. ”Other than bragging rights or free drinks? I doubt it. I’m sure it’s gonna be boring as hell.” Right along with being dangerous as hell.
Moving, Phoebe hooked an arm through Eden’s to start drawing the taller woman in the direction of the exits. If she wasn’t gonna be able to negotiate Eden into leaving, she’d have to do something a little more risky. ”I think the club needs a new party planner. Someone who knows how to throw a real party.” She scowled down at her drink, then tossed it back in one. ”And someone who doesn’t water down drinks. I might as well have just turned on a faucet. I think we should both go.” The smile she aimed up at Eden as she passed her glass off to some random guy in the crowd was pure innocence. There were a few people in town who would’ve noticed the hint of deception in the whiskey depths of her eyes, but not Eden. Luckily.
At the thinner edges of the crowd, Phoebe pulled her to a stop. She stepped close, looking up into Eden’s face with that smile still playing over her lips. ”This is for your own good,” she promised. Rising on her toes, Phoebe let the power swim into her eyes and her voice. ”This has bored you to tears. Watching two assholes beat each other to a pulp is no fun. You saw one fight, grew tired of it and decided to go where people actually bothered dressing up. Go to the Whitmore campus, swish your tail around, purr for whoever catches your eye and be glad you skipped out on the worst possible celebrations in town. Off you go.” Smiling sweetly, Phoebe patted Eden’s hip, propelling her towards the door. There was still plenty of the night left. Maybe Eden would find somewhere better, hopefully she’d get lucky and whatever fun she had there would eclipse the nightmare she was going through here to try and save Lawrence from his libido.
