By the time he got to Eros’ place at the end of the shift, all the good candy was bound to have gone – and not necessarily to the trick or treats who were still streaming past him. Given the numbers out on the streets it was no wonder that the sheriff had arranged for extra patrols. Forbes wasn’t gonna come straight out and say it, especially since she seemed to have an allergy to admitting that there was anything weird at all going on in this town, but she knew that there was something at work here that would be happy to take advantage of drunk teenagers celebrating just a little too hard or a kid who’d wandered off from a distracted parent. He’d have said what was the world coming to, but Ares remembered the warnings from his parents every year about the same things.
Huffing out a breath, Ares turned away from the square and headed down one of the residential streets. They were quieter than the bars and restaurants people tended to cluster around on a night like this. Little knots of kids worked their way between the houses and apartment buildings, parents usually hovering close by. Their own had done that. Sure, they’d let them feel like they were out there on their own, but at 12 or 13, they hadn’t come into their magic and being mouthy wasn’t gonna count for much if something really did decide to take a bite. By the time Clio was the same age she’d had two big brothers to follow her around, overly confident and dangerous looking enough to scare off any of the boys who’d have tried to look her way.
If there were any brothers doing the same tonight, then they weren’t back here. Most had probably headed to the Grill, looking to join in on the celebrations that had been pounding Monster Mash out into the air when he’d passed by there earlier. Maybe later they’d cause some trouble, but for now the place was quiet. Ares bristled faintly, propping his hands on his belt as he walked (well, waddled slightly, it didn’t matter how big or strong you were, everybody walked funny with pounds of equipment dripping off of their hips). If Claire had been there it woulda been different. She’d have been yapping in his ear, laughing at his suspicions enough that he’d have to back off on them. Tonight he was alone though. Officer Patera, strolling the mean streets of Mystic Falls, practically celebrating when he his radio squelched and he was proved right. There was trouble in town tonight.
Radioing back that he’d attend the report of a prowler outside a property whose owners were away for a few days – if that didn’t scream teenagers, he didn’t know what did – Ares broke into a jog. Chances were slim to pretty freaking none that a break in was actually occurring, but if it was he didn’t wanna be standing around while it happened. There was someone in Mystic Falls literally magicking themselves into houses to steal art after all (albeit the sort that was already more than a little dubious). He slowed as he got to Maple Street, counting off the mailboxes as he made his way up the street almost silently. Like the caller had said, number 53 was all dark, but as he started making his way around the house, Ares caught a flash of light inside. He sprinted on, bounding up onto the rear porch to rap the butt of his flashlight against the doorframe. ”Mystic Falls Sheriff’s Department. Come out with your hands up!” Not wanting to paint himself as a target, Ares took a couple of wary steps back, his eyes focused on the darkness behind the screen door and what he would’ve sworn was motion inside.

Hannah knew there were some angels who thought that she was crazy for splitting her time the way she did. Not only was she the one in charge of keeping the lights on in Heaven but she was also looking after the kids Zoe had taken in before she’d died, working at the Grill and hunting on the side. It was a lot but the truth was that Hannah much preferred to be kept busy and after everything that had happened she felt like she needed to do all the good she could. Even now she still felt guilty about joining Metatron’s side even though he hadn’t given her a choice in the matter and she knew that she wanted to do everything possible to atone for that. There was always so much going on in Mystic Falls but all of the things she did served a purpose. Working at the Grill not only allowed her to make money to support herself and the kids she looked after, it also gave her the chance to pick up tips on cases from patrons who were all too happy to offload on a bartender. With Raziel still out there everyone who was supernatural was at risk and Hannah was pretty sure that he wouldn’t stop there. He seemed determined to do things his own way and she wouldn’t be surprised if he decided to turn on the other angels next so she knew that they needed to be ready. The fact that he wanted to wipe out so many of the people who were important to her didn’t help either so she was doing her best to track him down and stop him once and for all. She agreed with Castiel about not killing Raziel but that didn’t mean that they couldn’t lock him away in Heaven or in the cage where no one could get to him and where he couldn’t hurt anyone else. Now it was Halloween but instead of working like she normally would, Hannah had the night off. The kids were all out doing their own thing so she had decided to follow up on a lead about some of Raziel’s followers. Rumour had it that they were staying on the move, living in houses that were empty for as long as they could before moving on to the next. It was clever, she had to give them that, and it was making them incredibly difficult to track down but she knew that she wasn’t going to give up. Right now Raziel was laying low but she hoped that by finding his followers they would lead her to him and with so many lives at stake, Hannah knew there wasn’t any time to waste. The latest lead she had was that they were staying in a house on Maple Street. The owners weren’t away for long apparently but that didn’t matter to the group, being there even if it was only for a few days meant that they would have the time to plot their next move and Hannah knew that she needed to find them now before they moved on again. Unfortunately by the time she got there, they were already gone. There were still signs that they had been there, after all they hadn’t exactly bothered to clean up after themselves, and she was sifting through everything they had left behind when a voice called out. Hannah had been careful but apparently not careful enough although she wasn’t sure whether she was the one the call had been made about or the group she had apparently just missed. She knew that she could get out of there without being seen but she was sure she recognised the voice and she was proven correct when she saw who it was. “It’s only me, Ares,” she said, holding her hands up to show that she didn’t mean any harm. “You might want to come and take a look at this,” she said, nodding in the direction of the living room which had been left in a particular state. She hadn’t had the chance to check the rest of the house yet but she knew that she would soon enough. ARES PATERA

The paranoia that had been his second best friend (alright, third best friend behind Eros and Claire now) since he’d enlisted in the Marines didn’t scream that there was a supernatural side to every crime that occurred in Mystic Falls, but Ares had been through enough that stunk of them that it was always a consideration in his head now. Witches supposedly robbing stores on the square, a Goddess (or something worse, he still wasn’t sure what the blonde had been) lurking in the dark in the warehouse district, angels walking amongst all of them. It wasn’t just magic users and vampires anymore. Ares had wondered if he’d lost his mind as each had been revealed to him. After years in war zones and almost as many on the streets now it wouldn’t be surprising if all those concussions had added up to a TBI. Eros probably would’ve told him he’d been a little cracked in the head from birth, but this was all new, each encounter leaving him feeling like he was standing on the edge of some precipice he’d fall head first over one day – like Brooke and the falls they’d had to climb down from when that storm had hit. The chaos in town tonight would keep his mind off of her at least.
Moving around the house supposedly being targeted by a prowler, Ares pushed his brain into professional mode. There was no hesitation as light flashed inside, just a rush towards it. He was already drawing the words together in the back of his mind in case he needed to use his magic to protect himself. They would roll off his tongue smoothly, as natural as his own name after all this time … as natural as the string of Greek swear words he muttered to himself as he got inside and the familiar blonde stepped into the arc of light from his flashlight. An angel walking around town on Halloween, there was probably something ironic about that. ”You picked one Hell of a night to go poking around in the dark,” he said dryly. His lips curved faintly as he squinted at her. Were you meant to say the H word to an angel, or was it like taking the lord’s name in vain in a church?
As Hannah was directing him towards the living room of the house, Ares was already walking through the back door. The light was trained down on the floor as he walked into the kitchen. The place looked messy, almost like some kids had used it for a party tonight. The family that owned the place definitely wouldn’t have left it that way when they’d gone on vacation. ”What’s going on? Dispatch said a prowler had been reported. I figured it was probably you, but it sounds like something was going down before you got here.” His light swept over the room as he reached the living room, the state of the place deepening his frown. His gut started to knot again, something felt off here. ”Who was here? I’m guessing you know since you turned up here.” As far as he knew, Heaven didn’t go making house calls for kids screwing around.

After the mistake she’d made with her last vessel, Hannah had promised herself that she wouldn’t ask anyone else to become a vessel for her. She had uprooted a woman’s life and almost ruined her marriage and Hannah knew that she didn’t want to put anyone else through that. Angels needed agreement from the person to be able to possess them but she had learned the hard way that it just wasn’t worth it. Zoe had been different, the woman had been dying and Hannah had hoped that she would be able to save her but she had been too late. The woman had agreed to become her vessel just before she passed away and that had left Hannah with a body that she could use permanently without having to worry about doing any harm to her host’s personal life. In fact Hannah had decided to fill Zoe’s shoes and look after the kids that the woman had been protecting and in doing so she’d started to build a life for herself. She still had other responsibilities, she was the one in charge of Heaven now but she wasn’t trying to force angels to return like others had done in the past. Instead she was splitting their forces between Heaven and Earth and each angel was able to make their own choice about where they wanted to help out. Some went between the two while others preferred to just choose one but she left it up to them. There were other angels who weren’t interested in helping at all however and Raziel was one of those. He was on his own twisted mission to wipe out every supernatural in the world and that included the kids that Hannah had sworn to protect. She had been doing her best to help find a way to stop him that wouldn’t result in him being killed since she didn’t want any more angels to lose their lives but so far it was proving difficult. She had known for a while that he was gathering followers on Earth and she had been tracking them but it seemed that she had made it to the house they had been staying in just a little too late to catch them this time. It would be easy to focus on something else and leave Ben, Hope and the others to deal with Raziel alone but he had already killed Hope and Josie and the truth was Hannah knew that they wanted to kill Raziel. There was a part of her that couldn’t blame them but at the same time she wanted them to be better than that so she was doing her best to find another way and figure out what he was up to before it was too late. Hearing the swear words leave Ares’s mouth when he realised it was her was enough to draw a smile to Hannah’s lips. “What can I say, I know how to pick my moments,” she shrugged. There were a few people in town who knew the truth about who and what Hannah was and Ares was one of those people. She knew that she could trust him and if she was honest it was good knowing that there were decent people in town that she could count on when she needed them. Leading the way through to the living room, Hannah nodded as he spoke again. “One of my brothers has become lost. He thinks anyone who is supernatural is an abomination and deserves to be wiped from the Earth and he’s gathering followers to help him do it. They’ve been staying in houses where the owners are away even if that’s only for a few days and I tracked them here but it looks like we just missed them,” she explained. It really didn’t look like they had left that long ago but now she was going to have to start tracking them again. “I’d hoped I could find them and make them see sense but I was too late this time,” she said before turning back to look at Ares. “I haven’t searched the rest of the house yet, would you join me?” she asked, knowing that two pairs of eyes was better than one. “I need to figure out where they’ve gone.”ARES PATERA

No shit. The words echoed in Ares’ head, but he didn’t say them aloud. Blasphemy definitely seemed a big no-no when it came to the angels, plain old bad language probably a close second behind it. The words were apt though. There had probably been a thousand years of Pateras plying their witch trade in Greece and not a single one of them had thought to pass down the fact that their gods weren’t the only ones. Angels, demons, both had been a revelation to him, one that had left him with his pride stinging after what had happened at the dumpster fire. A man could be fooled by a pretty face and a glimpse of an ancestral home he’d only seen on rare vacations when he’d been a kid. He’d been just as blind to what Hannah had been when he’d first run into her. Claire probably would’ve laughed, but his tiny human brain had struggled to overlay the insanity of things being real with what his version of reality had been. One drop of weird in the world didn’t mean that the whole world was that way, even now.
Ares snorted lightly as the angel shrugged off his words. It could’ve been worse, she could’ve appeared out of the darkness like the demon had, taking advantage of his absolute lack of knowledge. ”We should get you one of those bells they put on the collars of cats.” As though angels wanted to telegraph where they were that way in a town that was full of things that were ready to kill them. The thought put a shiver down his spine – just in time for Hannah to confirm that it was something that nasty that had been here. He rolled his shoulders, as though he could rub the uneasy feeling off against the fabric of his uniform shirt. ”Doesn’t sound like the sort of guy you want to be caught on the trail of.” For once in his life he was glad for not having gotten somewhere faster. He’d always been pissed at himself for being last through the door in the Marines, but now he was glad. Unlike some supernatural creatures, he wasn’t obviously somewhere else. With this guy he might not need to be to have a target on his back.
His light skipped over the trash left on the floor, looking for some tangible proof of what Hannah had been talking about. Maybe these followers weren’t angels like their idol. That might make this easier to track, easier to deal with. ”They’re you’re people?” he asked after a moment, his brow furrowing as he looked up at her. ”They came from a place like Heaven and they wanna commit mass slaughter here? That’s twisted.” Pressing his lips together, Ares glanced back down at the trash again. He took a moment, but then nodded at her. ”Let’s go. The sooner we clear the place, the sooner I can tell my people that there’s nothing here.” The last thing he wanted was any of the other deputies on the streets tonight stumbling into trouble. Ares swept his flashlight ahead of him as he started to move out of the room and towards the stairs. ”How long have you been tracking these guys?” The bigger question should have been how long until they moved on from this town.
