Going back to Hannay was a bad idea. A very bad idea. Everyone could see that bar Lawrence, who was busy burying his head in the sand because he permanently lived there. Phoebe yanked him out for a second to yell at him for being so damn irresponsible. Backed into a corner Lawrence felt like he had no choice but to jump on the defensive. He leaped there so quickly, telling his sister to mind her own business. What he did with his personal life had nothing to do with her. She couldn’t just walk into his life after being vacant for decades and tell him what to do. It was easy for her to stand there and tell him to stop seeing Hannya, but Hannya had him hooked on blood again. So, it was either he feeds from her or loses control with a helpless human. Phoebe never had that problem though, almost like she was immune to the urges and proudly wore her “I’ve never killed a human.” badge. Good for her. Lawrence left things sour with Phoebe, storming out of the bar furiously. He arrived early at the warehouse, helping to set up the few last bits before the evening. He couldn’t even remember if he’d put his name down for a fight in the first place. He wasn’t feeling super confident about the event anyway. The plan was to throw a bunch of violent supernaturals together and fight it out. Something would go wrong. Hector liked to think he could control everyone, but Lawrence didn’t want to test that theory. People started filtering into the warehouse and eventually the place was packed with people, all itching to either jump in the cage or watch someone get their ass beat. Lawrence waited to see if his name was hollered over the microphone because Hannya refused to show him the list. He observed the crowd, trying to see who he might be matched against. Hector was nowhere to be seen, which was odd. No sign of Linc either, but he probably didn’t have his permission slip signed by Magnus. He did however spot Phoebe standing with that Asian girl with one eye who’s name he always forgot. He was about to storm over to her and ask if she was fighting, but then he remembered they weren’t on good terms. His heart sank hard when he heard Phoebe’s name announced, being told to make her way to the front but it sank even further when he heard Hannya’s name. Lawrence pushed his way to the front, elbowing everyone out of the way. “Hey!” He called out to the employee holding the microphone, “You made a mistake buddy… Phoebe is a vampire and Hannya is a fucking demon.” His complaints were drowned out by the crowd cheering for the two to climb into the cage. Frantically he looked for Hector or even Luc. Someone to stop the show. HANNYA PHOEBE MURPHY

━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ HANNYA COULDN’T REMEMBER WHY SHE’D STOPPED PLAYING WITH Lawrence. He was so fun to manipulate━it was different than other vampires. He was under the impression he had a backbone, which was fucking laughable, and she loved stripping the idea from him. He didn’t. He was ruled by blood, just like every other vampire out there. And Hannya had a perfect well of it━a never-ending supply to continuously keep Lawrence under her thumb.
However, his humanity was another prickly little detail. Not a roadblock, really, but more like a bump. Nothing to worry about. His sister wanted to make a mountain out of it━even daring to come to Hannya to tell her to back off━and she’d likely convince Lawrence to steer clear of the demon. And he’d listen, of course, because that was his sister, and, well, that pesky humanity and everything.
So, she’d get rid of it and all those little bumps.
Halloween ended up being the best shell in which to fill her plan. The list was created based on sign-ups, but Hannya had a hand in finalizing it. Though fighters were supposed to be matched up by equal ability, Hannya changed that where she saw fit. She also included names of people who hadn’t consented, throwing in those who frequented the club, and even some employees. Firstly, she put herself and Lawrence’s sister together. Then Linc with one of the older vampire members. Next, Remzi was paired with… Iain. Yeah, that was sure to stir up some entertainment. Perhaps Iain would kill him. She made sure to put Mitch with someone likely to test his strength, and spread her dark little fingertips over the rest of the list, altering it to her liking. Most importantly, though, she’d get to bulldoze the speed bump that was Lawrence’s sister.
When the night came, she waited in the shadows, ensuring everything went according to plan. Unfortunately, Remzi was still breathing, but it looked like she’d still stirred up something nonetheless.
Finally, her name was called, and Hannya strode happily into the cage, flipping her hair over one shoulder and beaming at the roaring crowd. She could pick out Lawrence’s helpless yelps from within it, but that was only because she was listening. Nobody else cared enough.
Hannya found his face and flashed him a grin, then shifted her eyes━now pitch black━to her opponent. “Now ya get to act on all that shit ya tried t’say to me before, huh?” She sneered, “Or are ya backin’ down now that ya actually gotta fight me?”
Hannya kicked off her heels and, without much effort, one of them jumped up and into her hand. She whipped it at Phoebe, sending the heel straight for the centre of her chest. “Too bad it ain’t wooden,” Hannya laughed, and, as if it didn’t matter to her, she flicked her hand like she was doing nothing more than batting away an insect━and sent Phoebe flying into the cage wall.

She could’ve been at a party on campus, getting in one last taste of college life before she entirely moved on. Better yet she could’ve been holding her own party, pissing Teddy off, finding someone to sink her teeth into in more ways than one to round the night out with a bang. That would’ve left Lawrence entirely in the hands of Hannya, though.
Phoebe elbowed past people at the door of the warehouse, ignoring some of the snarls that came her way. Yeah, yeah, like Hannya, they were probably thousands of years old and the sorts of things that could’ve pulled her limb from limb with just their little finger, but there were few things more determined than a sister trying to save her idiot big brother from himself.
After she’d learned what had really happened to Lawrence when the vampires had invaded the valley, guilt had settled into her heart like razor blades, cutting deep. If she’d been with him instead of out in the woods, sharing her first kiss with Dotty, maybe she’d have been able to stop Lawrence from running off the road and dying. It would have meant sitting there for hours while he yammered on about whatever he was pulling out of the water, but she’d have put up with that to avoid this. There wasn’t a chance on earth she’d fail to save him a second time. Hannya was gonna have to accept that one way or another.
Inside, she finally slowed down, letting Kitty catch up with her. She fixed her gaze on Hannya as she sashayed out of the shadows, that tumble of ratty blonde hair and the curves that had obviously seduced Lawrence. Phoebe’s lips curved sharply, her eyes narrowing. Oh yeah, she had her eye on her.
”I need a drink,” Phoebe muttered. She waved a hand at the bartender, holding up two fingers. This was gonna be a long night. Impatient, she wiggled her fingers at him. The fighting had already started and she had no stomach for watching empty headed idiots getting their asses kicked for fun – especially not, wait was that Raik’s brother? Absolutely not surprising. The first two went down quickly and people started to drift away. At some point she lost Kitty in the crowd and ended up having to try and usher Eden out. Too much, too fragile, nowhere near drunk enough to avoid seeing all the weird shit here – another sticky situation waiting to happen that wasn’t gonna be added to her conscience.
Needing more liquor, she squirmed her way back to the bar and Kitty. Fingers held up again, three this time. Two for her, one for Kitty. Shaking her head Phoebe passed off a glass to Kitty before she swallowed most of her first in a single swallow. She was chasing what remained of it when her voice was called. ”What?” Clutching the glass, Phoebe shot a look at Kitty like she’d misheard, then up at the cage. Lawrence was already elbowing everybody out of the way, yelling up at the guy calling the matches.
The crowd was already cheering, probably because Hannya had strutted into the cage looking more like she was preparing for a Playboy shoot than a fight. Playing to them all with a hair flip that made her want to tear it out at the roots. ”That bitch,” Phoebe breathed. ”Hold that, I’ll be back once I’ve taught her a lesson.” She shoved the glass at Kitty and fought her way through the baying crowd.
There hadn’t exactly been a ‘how to stop a demon from seducing your brother’ manual online, but there had been bits and pieces about demons – most of which she’d figured were complete bullshit. They were just things in a human shell from what she could tell and that shell had to still be fragile enough to start to crumble with a beating, or maybe a little blood loss.
”Don’t worry,” she called to Lawrence, a smile that was maybe a little too smug on her lips. ”One of us knows how to fight at least.” With a gun on her hip and fangs that could tear out a throat. She hadn’t missed much about being a sheriff, but right now that gun would’ve come in handy. A quick end to the fight and Lawrence finally out of the bitch’s claws.
A tremor ran through the pit of her stomach as she climbed into the cage, but Phoebe forced out a chuckle as Hannya pulled her party trick and the whites of her eyes bled to black. ”So salty,” she crooned. ”Did you think I was gonna chicken out just because you put my name down for this? I’m guessing it was you, since Lawrence is freaking out.” Of course the demon had decided to act like she had the biggest balls as well as the biggest rack in here.
Phoebe side stepped, her fangs snapping out, veins crawling beneath her own eyes. Hannya was kicking off those hooker heels, grasping one like she was going to … fuck!. She snatched at the air, trying deflect the heel. It grazed her ribs before it clattered away. Staring down at herself, Phoebe snarled. That dress had cost the better part of five hundred dollars. Hannya probably wouldn’t miss the five dollar Shein special she was half wearing. Phoebe went to throw herself at her, but power slammed into her, tossing her back like she’d been caught in a whirlwind. The wall of the cage rushed up fast, one of the bars cracking a rib with a sick snap that was repeated a second later as it popped back into place.
”Can’t put your hands on me huh? Just on him?” Phoebe panted. She bared her teeth and blurred forward from a crouch on the ground, snagging a fist in the ratty blonde strands to force Hannya’s head back so she could tear a chunk out of her throat. Her gaze held Lawrence’s for a moment, her head shaking in a short arc. This was it, surely realising what the bitch was capable of would have him smartening up.

His life had been his own until recently. Teddy kind of got involved in things, but there was a lot Lawrence was keeping from his best friend. Just the type of things that would upset him or panic him. If he knew Lawrence was sleeping with a demon he’d spiral into sheer panic that his best friend was going to die or worse be possessed. Then Phoebe waltzed back into his life decades later, after he spent all that time believing she was dead. Losing his parents was hard, but losing Phoebe broke his heart. It shattered into a thousand tiny pieces. With his emotions sky high it was impossible to deal with that kind of heartbreak. He wasn’t strong enough to handle it. After a few weeks she started to become more and more involved in his life, which was fine, until it came to Hannya. Lawrence didn’t want a lecture from his younger sister about how it was a bad idea to sleep with a deranged demon. Phoebe’s pride was about to get her killed. Yeah, she knew how to throw a punch, even before she was a vampire, but she was going to need more than strength to take Hannya down. She’d need a fucking miracle. The only saving grace was Hannya was living inside a mortal body. A snap of the neck would take her down temporarily, until she jumped into someone else's body. Lawrence exchanged glances with his sister as she climbed into the cage. “Phoebe. Get out.” It wasn’t a request, it was a fucking order. He wasn’t about to watch her get obliterated by Hannya. There would be a reason she’d paired herself with Phoebe, but Lawrence didn’t want to find out why. Lawrence started to push his way through the crowd again, this time with more aggressive, sending people flying as he headed towards the entrance. Fear rolled through his body as he watched from through the wire. He felt so helpless. He couldn’t stand on the sidelines. “Let me in.” He snapped at the announcer who was standing in front of the gate. The man shook his head, “Sorry. Constensant only allowed inside the cage.” His sister wasn’t backing down, nor was she stepping out the cage admitting defeat instantly. No, she was too fucking proud to do that. She was gearing herself up for a fight. Hannya attacked first, sending the heel straight for Phoebe’s chest. Lawrence winced a little, a sharp pain in his own chest as if he was about to get impaled too but thankfully she batted it away. Hannya wasn’t done though, she sent Phoebe flying into the side of the cage. “This is the last time I’ll ask you. Let me inside of that fucking cage!” He slammed his hand furiously into the wire before it bounced back. The man shook his head again. He went to speak but Lawrence smashed his head into one of the metal bars causing a loud crack. He threw the man to the floor before turning his attention to his sister. He quickly unlocked the cage, throwing the door open and stepping inside as Phoebe jerked Hannya’s head backwards, teeth visible as she was about to take a chunk from the demon. “Hannya. If you want to kill someone, kill me. Not her.” His eyes flickered down to Hannya’s, “What’re you trying to prove? That you can kill us?” Because he fucking well knew that was true, but if she was going to eliminate anyone that evening it wasn’t going to be Phoebe. If she was eager to spill blood then it would be his. HANNYA

━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ HANNYA CACKLED AS THE LITTLE BITCH SHOWED HER FANGS AND those nasty little veins. Her brother definitely got the looks in the family━but it wasn’t like vampires were particularly attractive. They were just so fun to fuck with.
All of them were. This place was just filled with her little playthings, potential ones or not. None of them meant anything.
“Hoped you wouldn’t.” Hannya purred just after she threw one of her heels like a dagger. The little bitch tossed it away and came forward, but Hannya quickly curbed that attempt. Lawrence was somewhere off to the side, freaking out, but she didn’t pay him any mind.
“I can put my hands on ya, darlin’,” She hummed like they weren’t in the middle of a literal cage match, and allowed Phoebe to rush forward (did she think that was fast?), grabbing Hannya and pulling her head back. Perfect. She was just close now, and even dumb enough to think she had the upper hand, too. “Do it, honey. Get a taste of what your brother’s so addicted to… maybe then you’ll see why he’s never gonna give it up.” Hannya cackled, Dolly’s hazel eyes flicking to Lawrence as he came through the cage door.
Ugh, so cute. They were falling into her plan perfectly… like little dolls with strings attached.
Showing her real speed, Hannya disappeared from Phoebe’s hold and ended up pressed to her back in less than a second. One hand wrapped around Phoebe’s throat, nails pressed into her skin, and the other arm curled her ribs before diving into the vampire’s chest. Hannya held her slow-pumping heart in her hand, giving it a few quick, little squeezes like she was just toying with it. “No, sugar,” She purred to Lawrence, her head right next to Phoebe’s, where she grinned at him. “I always knew I could kill both of ya no problem. You’re only alive ‘cause you’re fun.” She snickered, “For now, anyway,” Hannya laughed again, her hair falling behind her shoulders before her eyes settled on his again, “But your sister’s gotta learn t’mind her own fuckin’ business. Comin’ t’me━” Her eyes went black, and every trace of that soft, sweet twang disappeared from her voice, “━And ordering me around as if she has the power or the ability. I do not take orders from beings as lowly as you.”
Hannya hissed, and in a moment, Dolly’s accent was back, and so were her eyes. “So I want ya t’do somethin’ for me, baby.” The crowd’s screaming never ceased, but Hannya knew he’d be able to hear her sultry whisper anyway. “I want you t’turn off your emotions… or I’m gonna rip your sister’s heart from her chest. Fair deal?” She fluttered her lashes like she was asking him to do the smallest favour, lips pursed, eager to see him flip his switch.

”Like fuck I will,” Phoebe growled at Lawrence. She ignored him and climbed into the cage anyway. No demon was about to take her brother away from her the same way the vampires had done. She was a century older now and smart enough not to believe that it was going to be as easy as sticking a stake in this bitch’s chest to get Lawrence free of her. Hannya was like the water stuff that would grow in the lake every summer, clinging, stinking when the heat was turned up, but she wasn’t indestructible.
Lawrence wasn’t done with trying to talk her out of this. He was pressed up against the outside of the wire, snapping at the announcer the same way he had her. God, how weak did he actually think she was here? ”You know this wouldn’t have happened if you’d just done what I’d asked,” she shot at him, tearing her eyes away from Hannya for just a moment. Surprise, surprise, Lawrence had dismissed her and now she was in the lion’s cage, having to protect her big brother.
She hadn’t expected the fight to be easy, but as she slammed against the side of the cage, Phoebe realised she was probably fucked. She could keep fighting back, watching the chances shorten with every wound Hannya inflicted on her. Hannya looked like a dumb blonde, but she’d obviously orchestrated it all. In the background she could hear Lawrence still begging to get it, slamming at the bars like they would give. It would be too late by the time he did, either she’d be on the floor, ready to be dragged out, or Hannya would be.
Reaching the bitch, Phoebe yanked her hair back and stood poised to drain her. God, even now the demon wasn’t shutting her mouth. What was it gonna take to make that happen? ”I’m not like him, I know when someone’s rotten and ready to be tossed out.” Lawrence was getting something else from this and surely now he’d have to see that it wasn’t worth it. Fangs grazed Hannya’s neck, the warmth of her skin against her lips sending a shiver through her.
Maybe that had been a warning, one that she’d foolishly overlooked. Before blood started to gush into her mouth, Hannya was behind her, her hand wrapped around her throat, cutting off her scoffing at Lawrence’s question – she couldn’t kill them. It was against the rules, wasn’t it? Someone had been yammering about what they were earlier. Phoebe squirmed in disgust, trying to draw away from the woman’s curves – with almost anybody else she’d have seen something sensual in it, but Hannya just made her skin crawl.
Baring her teeth, Phoebe tried to arch away from her. ”Don’t you ever get tired of bragging?” she panted. The little voice in the back of her mind was warning her about taunting the bitch too far though. Where had that gotten her before? Oh, yeah, right, turned. Reaching back, Phoebe curled her fingers into Hannya’s hips, trying to shove her away. ”I’ve absolutely got the right to tell you to get the fuck away from my brother, you bitch.” Lowly. At any other time she’d have been laughing, but fear was beginning to crawl up the back of her throat now, like she’d be able to puke it out at any moment.
Whiskey coloured eyes flared wide as Hannya dropped her whispered threat, fixing on Lawrence. Pheobe whipped her head back and forth, her efforts to tear her way free of the demon’s grip growing. ”Don’t give in to her. Lawrence, you don’t want to do this. She can’t kill me, she’s just doing this to force your hand. Walk away. Please.” The last word slipped out as a whispered plea as she grabbed for the hand at her throat and started to dig her nails into Hannya’s flesh, trying to pry her grip away before she followed through on her threat.

A pain shot across his chest as he watched Hannya’s hand drive through his sister’s rib cage. There were rules in place, but Lawrence was stupid enough to think these rules applied to Hannya. She would break them just to prove a point. To prove no one could tame her. His first instinct was to launch himself at Hannya, snap her neck and bring an end to her human form, but he’d failed. “Hannya… let go of my sister.” He couldn’t even try and appeal to her better nature by telling her Phoebe was the only family he had left because Hannya had no better nature. She didn’t give a fuck that the siblings had been apart for decades, mourning the loss of the other. She didn’t care that Lawrence needed Phoebe in his life. Lawrence had told Phoebe to mind her own damn business when it came to Hannya, but it wasn’t an argument to be had in that cage. They could fight it out later, away from the crowds, who were lapping up the entertainment. There was a wave of anger that these people were just standing there, watching it all unfold while clapping their hands. For a second his attention jumped to the crowd, as he looked for Hector in the midst of it. The only person who could maybe put a stop to this, by coaxing Hannya down. It was no secret the two also had some kind of personal relationship. Lawrence didn’t like to think about it too much. Hannya delivered her demands. He was to switch it all off or lose his sister. Phoebe was already screaming at him to leave the cage and call bullshit on Hannya's conditions. They weren’t bullshit though. “I— I can’t walk away Phoebe.” If turning into a savage numbness asshole meant saving his sister, then he would do it. “Fine.” His eyes darted back up to Hannya’s as he glared at her. Whatever was about to happen after this he knew for certain this was the end of him and Hannya. He couldn’t crawl back into bed with a woman who tried to kill his sister. Well, at least this version of him wouldn't. His emotionless self probably would. “Phoebe.” He whispered, with a crack in his voice. He swallowed harshly, “I’m sorry… sorry for my future actions… I trust you to bring me back.” The first time he flipped the switch he was actually looking forward to feeling nothing, but this time he was terrified. There was a slim chance Phoebe would fail to bring him back or he’d do something unforgiven, such as killing her. Lawrence’s eyes fluttered closed for a moment as searched for that trigger that was buried so deep inside. Seconds later his eyes opened. All his emotions had been wiped away, leaving behind a hollow shell. “I need a drink.” He announced to Hannya and Phoebe as he headed back towards the exit. The man on the mic was now standing upright again after recovering from his snapped neck. As Lawrence stepped out of the cage he darted for the man, snapping his neck a second time. “That’s for ignoring me earlier.” Lawrence stepped over the man, pushing his way through the crowd, heading straight for the bar. She hadn’t died because her brother had been an idiot the last time, Phoebe wasn’t entirely sure she’d be able to blame him for it this time either. It was her own determination to save Lawrence’s life – it didn’t take a wise man to see that Hannya would use him up and then toss him aside for somebody else to finish off – that had brought her here. Trembling as she tried to draw in a breath, unsure whether to tear herself away or stay put. There was a good chance Hannya would kill her either way, bitching about the blood ruining her manicure while her body dropped to the ground at her feet and started greying. What it would do to Lawrence wouldn’t bother her any more than a wrecked set of cheap gel nails did.
Phoebe’s eyes began to well with tears, hopelessness she never would’ve admitted to sinking in. Would Lawrence sacrifice his humanity for his little sister? Absolutely. They’d both failed to save the other the first time around and that had weighed lead heavy on them for decades. Lawrence was pleading with Hannya for her to let go, but how long would he last against the threat? It wasn’t like the pain of almost losing her would last once the switch was flipped. All that pain gone in a single second, for one of them at least.
”If you cared about him at all you wouldn’t do this to him,” Phoebe panted hoarsely. It wasn’t going to do any good though. She’d already seen that Hannya didn’t have a heart. The demon wanted the pain and was probably drinking in every ounce of encouragement from the crowd, an ego the size of her ass expanding again.
Her hands were slipping on Hannya’s skin, sweat dampening her own, probably stinking up the air around them with the scent of fear. Another little boost to the bitch who had her brother’s heart in her hands too in a way. ”No!” Phoebe screamed as Lawrence said he couldn’t walk away. ”You can’t. Please, don’t, please. Lawrence….” Tears swam in her eyes, her vision of her brother blurring, clearing only when she tried to blink them away but it didn’t work. He was putting his trust in her to save him. She didn’t know how she was going to do it, not when this bitch would have him strung up like a puppet now, pulling his strings with glee.
Lawrence’s eyes closed and before they even opened again Phoebe knew that he’d cut his emotions adrift. The man looking at her when his eyes opened again wasn’t the brother she’d known. ”I’ll find a way,” she called after him as he walked away, heading for a drink without blinking twice at leaving his sister there with a demon whore’s hand still in her chest.
The moment Hannya tore her hand free she was scrambling towards the cage floor on her hands and knees. Her dress hung in tatters across her chest, blood staining the bare skin. Phoebe blinked away the tears viciously. The crowd were still roaring but she was blundering through them, no longer caring about the bitch she left behind, who was probably already strutting out to celebrate with her walking, talking, heartless toy. All she could think about was Teddy, and the damage Lawrence could do to his best friend that he would never recover from. She had to warn him, close off Lawrence’s access to the apartment before she started to find some way to try and force Lawrence to turn his emotions back on. If the demon was dead by the time she did it, then it’d be even better. Until then her heart would continue to feel as though Hannya had merely torn it apart instead of ripping it from her chest.
