━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ CASSIE THOUGHT IT WAS AMAZING THAT Linc’s birthday was on Friday the 13th, but she wondered whether he thought it was cool. Whatever, he would after what she had planned! She’d even gone and asked his dad if it was okay for her to decorate before Linc got home and, surprisingly, Magnus said yes! Cassie had a feeling it had something to do with Nicky and Magnus talking quietly at the last Business Dudes of Mystic Falls Association meeting or whatever. In any case, she was freakin’ pumped. His birthday was gonna be awesome.
Armed with the movie downloaded onto a portable hard drive and a bunch of decorations (plus the cake), Cassie used the spare key Magnus put out for her to get in. She even gave his front door security camera a little wave despite her overflowing arms, causing Cassie to nearly dump everything on the floor. But nothing actually went down, so they were all good!
Also, it was super hard to do a Friday the 13th theme without going too far and making it all, like, gory, slasher shit. Which she didn’t wanna do, ‘cause she didn’t think Linc would like that one bit.
Cassie stuffed the cake in the fridge and went to work on Linc’s room, which wasn’t that bad. Cassie figured her own room would be ten times as messy━y’know, if she had one. Every piece of clothing on the floor was plucked up by two fingers and tossed into the hamper, drawers were closed, the stuff on the surfaces of his dresser and night table were tidied up and/or put away━she didn’t wanna go full crazy wannabe-wifey on him, but she did need space for her stuff. Like the “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” sign slung across one wall, the bundle of red balloons (complete with Jason and his hockey mask on them) weighted in the corner, and the myriad of other “unlucky” things. Like the image of a ladder she’d printed out and stuck above the door (she was not gonna lug an actual ladder in here), a (stuffed animal) black cat sitting on his nightstand, and two open umbrellas she’d enchanted to hand from the ceiling in two parts of his room. Awesome.
She put a red film over his light for added effect, and then beamed at her handiwork before checking the time. Shit. She had to be outta here. Linc was supposed to be picking her up from work so they could hang out at his place, which meant she had to get to work and pretend she was actually working.
Quickly, Cassie changed into her Camp Counsellor outfit, then left a Jason mask and a plastic knife on Linc’s bed. She stuffed her bag of clothes under his bed, left the snacks with the mask, and put on sweatpants and a coat overtop what she was wearing.
Cassie rushed out and to the square, thankfully managing to get to the shop with enough time to get inside, chat with Mandy for, like, five minutes, then zip up her coat again and walk out. She waved happily the moment she saw Linc, then bounced with excitement, quickly closing the gap between them. He wasn’t far enough that running to him made sense, but she did it anyway, and jumped onto Linc as she approached, as though she were trying to tackle him.
“Happy Birthday!” Cassie squealed. She hoped he knew she had to do something for him, especially after he bought Olive for her birthday, but she was also really excited to surprise him. “Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday!” Each word was punctuated by a kiss to his face, and Cassie’s arms stayed tight around his shoulders, effectively keeping Linc locked against her lips.
Once she was finally kind enough to free him, Cassie laughed and stepped back, taking his hand and beginning to drag him in the direction of his house. “What’d you do this morning?” She asked, ‘cause he obviously wasn’t at home, and she was pretty sure Magnus mentioned something about a birthday brunch-breakfast-thing. Not like he wanted to, like, tell her what their plans were, but more that Linc would be out, allowing her to complete her master plan.
She seriously couldn’t wait for him to see.
Cassie tried to remain patient as he unlocked the door, and unzipped her coat, though she didn’t take it off at the door━it wouldn’t totally ruin the surprise, but she didn’t wanna give him any hints just yet. She took his hand again, waiting for Linc to lead the way this time, though she definitely did some nudging towards the stairs and pecked the edge of his lips like she was leading him there for something. “Whaddaya wanna get for dinner? My treat, obvs, but I thought we could watch a movie and order in or somethin’? I know you’re probs not hungry yet, but…” Not many hours could’ve passed between their brunch and now━the sun was already starting to lower, creating a blinding “golden hour” for everybody around━and he probably wasn’t super hungry just in general, but it was more about the date part than anything else.
The minute they walked into his room, Cassie couldn’t help the sneaky smile beginning to crack across her face. She stared sideways at Linc, trying to gauge his expression, her own getting brighter by the second. “Surprise!” She cheered, letting go of his hand to slip into the centre of his room, bouncing beneath the red glow of the light filter. “It’s Friday the Thirteenth themed! Do you love it? You better love it,” Cassie giggled, though she really hoped he did. And, if he didn’t, then she started stripping just in case. Once she was left in only knee-high socks, booty shorts and the cropped t-shirt, she stretched her arms out to the sides as if presenting everything all over again. “Also got you a kinda-costume! It’s totally sexy,” She teased, pointing to the mask and plastic knife on the bed before hanging her coat on the door and shoving her sweatpants under the bed with the rest of her stuff.

’October 13th. I remember them bringing you home two days afterwards. Such a quiet baby, if I hadn’t seen them bring you home I’d have barely known you were there.’ Until his parents had made that first rush to Mrs Graham for her to look after their baby. After that it had been a constant request – just have him for the night, he’ll be good for ya. He had been, Mrs Graham had assured him of that, but it hadn’t been fair on her to raise a kid at her age, one that she wasn’t even related to by blood.
He’d been three or four before he’d realised that other kids had special days every year. They’d come to playgroup with new clothes and little treats for the class, babbling around the gifts their parents had got for them. Linc remembered asking Mrs Graham about it and winced as he let the shop door shut behind him. He supposed she’d given him little things for Christmas before then, but there hadn’t been parties at McDonald’s like the other kids had – the ones he wasn’t invited to – or the brightly wrapped stack of presents waiting for him when he woke up. She’d done her best and he’d made sure he hadn’t asked too much of her after.
Instead of heading home like he usually would’ve done to clean up before work on any other day, Linc headed past the turn off that would’ve led that way and strolled towards the square. If Magnus had thought it’d mean something to him he’d have put on a spread like that. Presents piled high, singing at him the minute he’d walked down the stairs, a cake dripping in candles for later – there had been a couple added to the top of the stack of cherry-berry pancakes in the end. It would’ve felt a little much, like his slow easing into this normal family life thing had gone from slowly easing his way chest deep at the shallow end to dropping off a mile deep ledge. Another year maybe, if Magnus kept wanting to make up for all he hadn’t had when it’d been two addicts doing all the raising.
Linc licked his bottom lip, catching the slightest hint of the berry syrup on it. Magnus had made an effort and he’d appreciated it, not dropping stupid jokes about Magnus finally joining the 21st century by taking him for brunch somewhere that had avocado toast and frittata on the menu. Maybe there’d be some part two later when Magnus locked up his shop for the day, but for the minute he was more than satisfied with how his birthday was going – especially since he wasn’t working tonight and Cassie was waiting at the pawn shop for him.
Knowing Magnus, he’d dropped hints about his son’s birthday to Hector. Tomorrow he’d probably walk back in and the place would be draped with streamers, jokes about just hitting toddlerhood fired his way like party poppers by the others. Didn’t matter, Linc told himself as he hit the square, because he’d have had this first. Her.
Cassie was already waiting outside the shop for him when he reached the other side of the square, bouncing on her toes in that way that radiated happiness. He could bask in it for hours, like it was the sun, closing his eyes and letting that warmth wash over every inch of him. Before he could reach her she was running at him, jumping at the last minute so he was bracing himself and throwing his arms around her as she almost took him down. The thank you for the first lot of birthday wishes stuck in his throat as he grinned. Cassie was never gonna stop with just one. She was pressing those words into his skin with kisses, her arms locked tight around his shoulders that he couldn’t have pulled away if he wanted to (and obvs absolutely didn’t want to).
”Thanks,” Linc murmured as Cassie drew back just far enough to start tugging him down the street. In the direction of home, although that didn’t necessarily mean they’d end up there. Hanging out on his birthday with his girlfriend covered a lot of ground. Holding her hand, Linc tried to keep up with her. ”Magnus took me out to brunch.” Linc’s grin brightened, it still sounded just a bit too modern for Magnus. ”Had a stack of pancakes almost as tall as you. We’ll have to go there some time.” Because that’s what blokes who didn’t get all their real sustenance from little plastic bags in the fridge did with their girlfriends. ”Then I took a little stroll around town … dipped in and out of the shops. Got myself this …” Lifting his hand, Linc twisted his wrist to show Cassie the leather banded watch there – not as old as the one he’d gone to find to give to Magnus as a long overdue thank you, but probably almost as old as Mrs Graham had been when she’d died. The bloke in the shop had shown him how to wind it up – same with Magnus’. The little plastic bag that’d been handed over still crinkled in his coat pocket.
Yeah, they were definitely going home. Maybe just for a pit stop before they went and caught the movie Cassie had mention, maybe for longer. Linc let her lead, not wanting to go spoiling anything that was coming his way unexpectedly today. He pulled out his keys as she tugged him up to the door, nudging her in ahead of him. Unlike Cassie had shrugged out of his jacket – if they were going out again he’d just put it back on. Not sure when Magnus would be back he intended to head upstairs anyway, but Cassie was definitely nudging him there – or was it leading him on with those little pecking kisses that trailed around his mouth.
Linc shrugged as he started up the stairs, drawing her with him towards his room. The sort of dinner that would really hit the spot was chilling in the fridge, but he was still on his schedule and that bashfulness about letting Cassie see him swigging down blood had remained. ”That sounds great,” he said honestly. His lips pursed for a moment as he tried to come up with something he knew she’d like. ”How about Chinese food? Or Mexican?” He’d have got them something if they had gone out, he was definitely earning more than Cassie after all – and had less overheads, although he made sure he gave Magnus something every week.
What had seemed like a quiet sort of date night (which he totally wouldn’t have had any complaints about) vanished in a heartbeat (one of his ridiculously slow ones) as he nudged open his bedroom door. The fact that it was a dozen times tidier than he’d left it barely registered after everything else did. Linc puffed out a breath, looking around open mouthed. It wasn’t Magnus who’d festooned the place for his birthday, it was all Cassie.
A ‘Happy Birthday’ sign was spread across one wall, balloons bobbed about in one corner, a cat sat on his nightstand (he had to look twice to make sure it wasn’t Olive brought along for the ride). Were they umbrellas? Linc tipped his head back and laughed lightly as he started to put together the theme. Friday the 13th, unlucky for some, definitely not for him tonight. He turned in the red glow of his bedroom light, trying to keep up with Cassie as she bounced into the middle of it. ”It’s amazing. Of course, I love it. Thank you!” The words caught in his throat. Nobody had ever done this for him before. He’d have stepped in, catching Cassie’s beaming face in his hands to plant a kiss on her, but she was shimmy out of her …
Heat rushed to his cheeks immediately, his eyes dropping to the bare inch of skin between the waistband of the shorts that showed off the entire length of her legs and the cropped t-shirt. Linc looked back up, the bashfulness giving way to a grin that was almost devilish in that red light. ”Did I get short-shorts too? I dunno if I’ve got the legs for it…” he joked. As Cassie bent to tuck her stuff away, he picked up the mask and slipped it on. Thankfully the knife wasn’t real – that would’ve had him hesitating before he tapped the tip of the knife lightly at the collar of her t-shirt.
”How do I look?” he asked, snaking his other arm around Cassie’s waist to draw her into him. Aaah, only one problem, the mask was a definitely block to kissing her. Linc grinned though, using the back of the hand holding the knife to tip the mask up over his mouth. It left him blind, but he didn’t need his sight to find his way to Cassie’s mouth. ”I can’t believe you did all of this for me,” he breathed against her lips before he finally showed her the sort of gratitude he’d wanted to since they’d walked into his room.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ CASSIE TOLD HIM HIS WATCH WAS CUTE━AND IT totally was, very retro━and gave him a peck on the cheek to prove it, smudging a big spot of red lipstick there. Her conversation on the way to his place was just filler, though━obvi she was trying to listen, and she did care, but she was just soooo excited to show him what she’d done!
“Chinese!” She said quickly, trying to end the conversation before they got into his room. She wanted alllll his attention on what she’d done to it… even though hers started to wane when she thought about fortune cookies. And noodles. Ugh, she’d worked up an appetite while decorating his room.
Finally, finally, they got into his room, and Cassie got to see his reaction in all its glory. Ugh, this was the best! He seemed really happy, and she couldn’t stop smiling at him, even as she stripped down to almost nothing.
She snickered when he commented on the short-shorts and shoved the rest of her stuff under his best. “Nah, they’re just for me,” She beamed, then added (with a blush and a nervous grin), “Well, kinda for you, but y’know…” Cassie flirted sheepishly, trying to quickly shift the conversation to his mask.
Also, she totally thought he was gonna try to drag the neckline of her top down, but then Linc was pulling her in instead, and Cassie’s face was very close to the plastic hockey mask. “Suuuper scary.” She grinned, then dropped her voice to a whisper, “But in a hot way,” Especially ‘cause she knew what was underneath. Her fingers curled around his arms as he shifted the mask out of the way, and she kissed him so hard that her head started to spin. Kisses with Linc always kinda made her knees feel like jello, but this felt… like more than that. Like it was so much and not enough at the same time━like she’d never get enough even if they spent all night locked together.
By the time it inevitably ended, Cassie’s breath had picked up, and she kept staring at his lips. She also needed a few seconds before any words popped into her mind. “‘Course I did,” She whispered, “It’s your birthday; I had to do something special. It’s… kinda hard to top your present for me, but I tried.” Cassie smiled softly, her hands slipping up to his shoulders, the back of his neck, then through Linc’s hair until she could gently pull the mask the rest of the way up.
They were supposed to be starting their movie. And popcorn. And… Chinese food? But the mask dangled from her fingers as she held his head and kissed him again, slowly dragging Linc backwards to his bed. “There’s… movie,” Was all she managed in breaths stolen with her tongue in his mouth. The edge of the bed hit the backs of her knees, and Cassie folded down with it, dragging Linc with her. A quick makeout wouldn’t totally derail her birthday plans, right?

Magnus probably would’ve had something to say about the nutritional value of Chinese take-out – despite there probably being veggies in every dish except the prawn crackers – but Linc wasn’t sure if they’d even get around to the point of ordering and eating before Magnus was back. Cassie had asked what he wanted for dinner, but it had been in that rush home and into the house it had felt a little like it was just filling the space until they got upstairs.
Birthdays were meant to be about pushing the boat out and both his dad and Cassie were doing it just that for him. It was sad that there was less than a handful of people in his life who’d ever wanted to do that for him, but even if he could wish for his life to have been different with the candles on whatever cake-like thing he might have this year, he wouldn’t have swapped that handful for the world. The bad things that had swallowed up most of the light they’d brought to his life? Yeah, those he’d get rid of in a heartbeat, but not a moment of the rest of it.
He'd probably made a thousand jokes about old vampires and their memories – Magnus could probably still remember just what day in 79BC he’d taken his first ride on a horse – but those good moments he wanted to be able to hold on to for however long his life was gonna end up being. Linc had to force his eyes back above Cassie’s waist, but that long look he’d taken at the smooth length of Cassie’s bare thighs and that glimpse of belly, he wanted to hold on to that along with everything else she’d done for him – that they’d done together.
Linc hummed at the idea they were just for her, the sound cutting off as she grinned nervously at him. ”Definitely for me too,” he said softly, heating rising along his cheekbones. His teeth sank into his lower lip as he got another good look when Cassie turned away. They were definitely the best present he’d got so far this year, although there was no way he’d end up telling Magnus that.
It was a good thing the mask hid the worst of the blushing. Compliments were easier to take now than they had been back at the start, but there were still those irritating moments when he felt bashful again when they came his way. Linc let out what was meant to be an evil cackle, although with him it was probably anything but, and it definitely didn’t last when she added the end bit. ”Good,” Linc breathed, the rest of the words, whatever thought had been spawning them disappearing in a rush of heat as Cassie kissed him back so hard that it felt like the entire world had stopped around them. It was an eternity between heartbeats (even if they were closer together with his brain screaming for his heart to pound in his chest), pleasure spinning around them, through him, each sensation leaving him desperately chasing the next.
If Cassie hadn’t drawn back he might’ve held her there until the sun went down. Unlike him she had to breathe eventually. It might have just been a quick snatch of breath, like you’d take when you popped your head up in the swimming pool, but his gratitude had Cassie whispering again – sinking back down into the deep end of another kiss was definitely gonna wait a minute. ”Everythin’ you do makes me feel special,” he admitted. ”Last year at the carnival was amazing. This is … this is more … I definitely didn’t get this creative.” His chuckle was a little breathless. All he’d done was listen and pay the adoption fee when his idea paid off. Cassie had done way more than that, she’d transformed his room.
With the mask out of the way he could see her again, pinpointing her mouth and starting to zero in on it again as he dipped his head. Cassie met him half way, the kiss spinning out under motion this time. Linc shuffled forward, hands squeezing Cassie’s hips to steady himself – it was easy to imagine her tripping, falling onto the bed with Cassie under him instead of going down slowly as she tried to get the night back on track. ”We can start it up, there’s always the opening credits first right? Don’t have to pay attention to … that …” He definitely couldn’t when he was twisting on his bed, dragging his lips down to Cassie’s throat as he tried to squirm them into a comfortable position on it. Some angle where they could see the screen, one where he could keep kissing her too. Her thigh was warm under his palm as he went to fumble for the remote – with the worst (best) aim – her skin so soft as his fingers curled around it, turning her towards him slightly.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ LINC’S WORDS WRAPPED AROUND HER SKIN and dove deep into her body, feeling like they were filling her stomach with warmth and then spreading into all her nerve endings. Maybe that was just his kisses, and his touch, and ohmygod he was so hot. Not hot, like, literally (but he wasn’t clammy!), but so… ugh. She seriously couldn’t put words to it, and maybe that was ‘cause she’d never felt like this before. It hadn’t even been this good with Kace, and that had still been so good.
Maybe it was the whole relationship thing girls talked about━she’d seen it on online forums like… Reddit or whatever. How sex (not that that’s what was happening here!) was always better when you were in a relationship.
Wait, hang on, he didn’t think they were gonna have sex, did he? No, totes not. Like, sometimes their kisses got pretty steamy, but they were always in a bad spot for anything else. At her work, rarely his, and in public, like, on dates or whatever. She was either living with two other girls (who hated vampires) in a shitty motel room or in a cot at the shop, and Linc’s dad was always home━so, not really great places to try anything out.
But now they could. Except she was still sorta scared to, but that feeling dwindled in the back of her mind the longer they went on.
And maybe they didn’t have to go all the way, but she definitely felt something jolt through her when his hand touched her thigh. She was shifting around with him, trying to get into a better position without losing the contact of his lips on her throat━that wasn’t too much for him, was it?━when she felt it. Cassie let out a little sound that was mostly surprise, partly pleasure, and then followed up with another one that was all pleasure as he pulled her into him.
She ended up on her side, one leg over his, her hips moving like she could magically coax his hand back down without saying anything. Well, she probably could, but that might freak him out. Cassie finally worked up the courage to take his palm in hers and drag it down to her shorts, and they didn’t end up watching any of that movie.

━ evil notions come free ━ MAGNUS HAD BEEN ITCHING TO GET HOME ALL night. He knew Nicky had assured him of Cassie's character, but Nicholas Reid was a witch, too, and that meant he didn’t have any of their interests at heart. Jo did, of course, and while she’d assured him this would be fine, he still worried. Linc could be laying in a puddle of her blood right now and be ready to off himself for his actions. Or, perhaps worse, she could be picking him apart one torturous spell at a time, trying to get whatever information she could about the vampires in Mystic Falls. (The more he thought about it, the more ludicrous it became, but it didn’t quell his fears.)
But they were kids, and Linc would find another time and another place to do whatever it was they planned on doing, so Magnus would much rather they did it at home. It was better that way.
He’d hoped for a text partway through the night, but perhaps he was just being over-protective. It wasn’t his fault, though━he’d already lost one son with his stupidity, and he could just as easily screw this up, except Linc would live forever. And Magnus would always have to know that he was still out there, somewhere, hating his sire.
Magnus slipped through the front door and removed his shoes, his gaze ticking around the first floor. The kitchen and living room looked untouched. He listened closely, and couldn’t hear anything at all, not even a movie or whispers and giggles. He might’ve thought she’d left already if her shoes weren’t still at the door. Magnus checked his watch with a frown, puffing quietly. It was far too late for her to still be here.
He hesitated only briefly before heading up the stairs, stopping outside of Linc’s bedroom to listen in. He could hear breathing, at least, and two hearts beating slowly. Were they asleep?
Magnus opened the door, ready to wake them up and tell Cassie to leave, but froze when he saw the state they were in. It was already inappropriate for her to be sleeping here, but evidently, she was sleeping with his kid.
And why the hell was the room red? Was she going to turn him into some kind of sexual fiend? Magnus’ eyes jumped to the bulb they’d left on and grumbled at the red filter━that was a fire hazard! God, of all things!
Aside from the decorations (which he conveniently ignored), Magnus frowned at the plates that’d been left out, cake smeared on them, but most of all, the fact that Cassie was nearly naked. They’d seemed to have switch, with Cassie losing her bottoms and Linc losing his top, but Cassie’s shirt didn’t do much to cover the bare skin beneath━especially not when they’d obviously been ruffling around. Magnus reached up to tear the red filter from the bulb, making it significantly brighter, then bent to grab whoever’s trousers were on the floor and tossed them at Linc. He then half-turned away to give them the illusion of privacy.
“Lincoln.” Magnus grumbled, “Get up, both of ya. This’s inappropriate, especially when I trusted you to ‘ave the ‘ouse to yerselves tonight.” He puffed unhappily, “Cassie, s’time for you to go ‘ome.” If she even had one.

The night hadn’t been planned with intentions of this when he’d asked his dad if they could have the place to themselves for a couple of hours. Linc was sure he couldn’t have even got the words out of his mouth for that. No matter how far he’d come with respecting his dad and handling having an actual father for the first time in his, he wasn’t at that point in things where he’d have had a talk about the birds and bees and just what he wanted to do with Cassie (in the future, it had definitely been a little while down the line sort of a plan). The thought alone would’ve had his skin crawling. In Magnus’ day the conversation probably wouldn’t even have existed. It would’ve been all that church stuff about waiting til marriage and only doing it for procreation (not that Magnus had done either when the Queen had taken him to bed).
He might’ve felt it at times, but he wasn’t the dumb little naïve virgin everybody at the club thought he was. You couldn’t have lived with Wesley for years without at least hearing things. The after parties had been debauched, as many young, pretty girls brought in as possible to make sure that his guests had as good a time as possible. And the lure to bring them in? A bashful smile and a boyishly handsome face.
For a split second as Cassie had started to make those small sounds, Linc had been thrown back there. This was nothing like that though. He wasn’t doing this under orders from someone who would twist it all, who would’ve hurt Cassie if she’d been there then and the two of them had been like this. It was all them and, God, he wanted her. That was what had broken him the most when Cassie had torn herself away from him the night she’d made him his ring. The first girl he’d genuinely wanted, the first one he’d started to fall in love with, thought he was nothing more than the monster he’d been becoming under Wesley’s control.
Those wounds had healed, the cracks in his heart disappearing as they’d worked their way back through being friends to here. When he saw himself reflected back in Cassie’s eyes he saw someone trying to be better for her, trying to be better for his dad too. Cassie warmed him up inside, had his heart racing in a way he hadn’t thought it ever would again as her skin grew hot under his lips. He bathed in it as they shifted on the bed, feeling a rush of it swallow him like a tidal wave as Cassie had taken his hand in hers and .. oh, now that was heat. Drowning in it, he didn’t hear a single word of the film, didn’t catch a single second of it when all of his attention was on Cassie. The wave broke, both of them tumbling in it before they’d sprawled their in his now tangled sheets and had fallen asleep. Even in sleep every sense was full of her. The feel of her skin under his, the scent of Cassie’s soap on her skin, the taste of her. Those little sounds she’d made as he’d slid lower, kissing his way down her stomach.
Linc swallowed hard, sure he could still taste her on his tongue. His lips pressed together as other sounds bled in. Sharper. The voice deeper, unhappy. Light streamed in as his eyes cracked open and he grunted, turning his face away as something hit him in his chest. He slowly shoved them away, rising up on his elbows. Cassie still lay beside him still asleep.
”Dad?” he croaked, grinding a thumb and forefinger into his eyes. ”What time is it?” He squinted at Magnus’ back, starting to reach for his phone to check before Magnus started lecturing, the words puffing out. Linc frowned, sitting up. One glance at Cassie was all it took for his memory to kick in. The film. The dinner they hadn’t ordered in the end. One kiss spinning out until he’d slithered down the mattress.
Heat flared again, rushing into his cheeks as he fumbled with the covers, drawing them up around Cassie’s hips to cover up all that bare skin. ”We were just watchin’ the film,” he started, knowing it was obvious that hadn’t been where they’d ended up. ”We didn’t do anythin’. Not really. If you’d have knocked, it wouldn’t have been…” Inappropriate, not really. He’d have got up, Cassie would’ve pulled the shorts and panties he’d peeled off of her back on and he’d have been out there on the landing feeling like he might burst into flames, but not having to explain it all to Magnus. ”I’m not a kid, you know. Cassie’s not either. We’re old enough.” How old had Magnus been when he’d done the same? Him and Hector had made it painfully clear that neither one of them had been a wallflower back in the day. Drunken tales of their exploits had made him want to tear his ears clear off of his head so he didn’t have to hear any more.
Reaching out – over the covers – he shook Cassie lightly. This was gonna be so much more embarrassing for her. Magnus hadn’t been her biggest fan to start with and now all he probably had in his head was the thought that Cassie had debauched him, not the other way around. ”Cassie … it’s time to wake up. The film’s over. My dad’s home.” And was standing right there, glowering hypocritically. Instead of being a prude who’d started sowing an entire farm of wild oats after his turning, it was like he’d done the opposite. The manwh*re becoming practically monk-like in his oldoldold age.
