I know what it's like to think of yourself as a monster
So much was changing and MG didn't quite know how to wrap his head around it. Sometimes it got so much even for someone like MG who looked like he could shoulder the entire world and still walk with stable footsteps. Not only were they on the verge of an apocalypse, but Raziel's followers had actually managed to seriously hurt someone that he cared so deeply about to the point where MG had to give him his blood in order to heal him, but even then, he was already too late and now his best friend was a vampire and he can't tell if that was a good thing or not because he did feel like he had just damned Ethan to an immortal life of pure suffering or damned him to walk on egg shells for the rest of his very, very long life. MG was relieved that his best friend was alive, don't get him wrong, but if Ethan ever grew to hate MG for making him a vampire, MG's not quite sure he'd be able to withstand it. Why? Because Ethan was his best friend... But deep down, MG knows that's not the only reason.
Ever since he almost confessed his feelings to Ethan, MG hasn't been able to stop thinking about it. How easy it was for him to admit his feelings for Ethan as he was on the verge of dying. He so desperately wanted Ethan to know about his feelings but now that Ethan was alive and well (as well as he can be now that he's a vampire), he can't bring himself to say those words again. MG was currently sitting on the roof of the boarding house. His abilities as a vampire made it easy for him to get up there. It gave him a good view of the sunset as he twirled his drink in his hand. He wasn't the type to drink often, but sometimes, when he needed to clear his head and think clearly, he'd indulge in a few drinks and now was just one of those times as he longed for nothing more than to have those voices stop and let him catch a much-needed break after the very, very long couple of days he's had, or was it a week already? He honestly lost count at this point. MG sighed quietly, his eyes moving from the remaining contents of his drink and instead fixed his eyes on the sunset, watching as the sun got lower and lower. He knew that he should get down soon, but for now, he just wanted to stay for a little bit longer in hopes of clearing up his head.

Mystic Falls had always been a beacon for the supernatural but now it was even more so. Stefan had grown used to the way things were for the most part but there were still some things that surprised him. What Raziel was doing definitely fell into that category, the days of believing that vampires and witches were the only ones out there were long gone especially since Ric and Jenna opened the Salvatore School and Stefan had been learning more than he had ever thought possible from MG. He knew that Damon used to think of the people he took in as waifs and strays but to Stefan each one of them had become family in their own right. He and MG weren’t related by blood but the boy was a son to him just as much as Jacob was and Stefan knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. His life had changed so much since he had arrived in town and he had so many people in his life now that he would do anything to keep safe. Stefan’s time at college had come to an end and since then he had been working at the local garage as a mechanic. It was something that he was good at and it was also something that he enjoyed, not to mention it gave him something to do with his days while Bonnie was busy and the others were all out. Normally he liked working but the last few days had been different and he had found himself worrying about MG a lot. He could tell that the boy was trying to put on a brave face for Ethan while he got used to being a vampire and Stefan had been trying to be as supportive as he could but he could tell that MG was holding something back and that wasn’t like him. That day his boss had let him finish early so he could go home and check on MG and as Stefan’s car made its way up the driveway he could see a figure sitting on the roof. Listening carefully, he could pick out the sounds of Ethan and the others inside the house so that meant it could only be one person up there – MG. Without even thinking about it he used his abilities to jump as high as he could and moments later he too was on the roof. “You’re hiding out up here and you’re drinking, that’s not a good sign,” Stefan admitted as he moved so that he was sitting next to MG. “What’s going on, are you okay?” he asked, unable to deny that he was worried about the boy. I know what it's like to think of yourself as a monster
MG made sure to keep an ear out just in case something happened while Ethan was spending time with the others, but so far, nothing seemed amiss, so he was able to use that time to process everything. MG twirled the drink he had inside the glass, releasing a soft sigh as he watched the drink slosh around until he paused and lifted the glass up to his lips to take a quick and much needed sip. He lowered the glass back down and let the coldness of it bring him some comfort. He seemed surprised for a moment when Stefan joined him up on the roof but then his surprise seemed to melt into acknowledgment. If there was someone who could pick up on signs quickly, it would be Stefan, and he's certain that the signs he's giving off right now aren't exactly good ones either, so he wasn't surprised to see Stefan right by his side, looking like he'd just come back from work. "Hey, Stefan." MG greeted, his voice light despite the fact that he was feeling anything but light.
MG wasn't at all surprised when Stefan read him to the bone. He let out a brief chuckle, his head dipping down to stare at the ground momentarily before he looked back up again and his eyes soon settled on Stefan. "Yeah, I guess this doesn't look too reassuring." MG could come up with the greatest lie and it still would be too obvious because MG wasn't the type of person to do something like this unless he wasn't feeling at his best.
"I'm okay. Well, considering everything." MG said with a quick shrug following. It was the ideal answer, wasn't it? That he was feeling alright because in the end, it worked in their favor and Ethan was back in his life again. A vampire, but at least he's alive right? But below the surface, there was a boy who was terrified of the future and what it may bring them. "I should be okay." MG said after a few moments of silence but as he glanced down at his drink, he was beginning to realize that he was anything but okay. There was something that was resting so heavily on his chest and most importantly, his heart. A confession that was aching to come out, to let itself be known because that same confession was getting fed up of being pushed down each time it neared the tip of his tongue, neared the threat of almost slipping out. It was always like that, wasn't it?
Almost. Almost. Almost.
MG gnawed on his inner cheeks for a moment, unsure of what to say. "Can I ask you something?" MG finally seemed to end his silence with that question. "Was it difficult, telling Bonnie how you felt? Were you scared? Of both the rejection and of losing her if something were to happen?"

Things had changed so much since Stefan had returned to Mystic Falls, his relationship with Elena hadn’t worked out but now he and Bonnie were together and were going strong and he now had three kids to look after. Jacob and Lucy were adults and they had been on their own for over a hundred years before they found him but Stefan was still protective of them just like he was protective of MG. He didn’t want anything bad to happen to any of them and he knew that he would do whatever he could in order to help them. Right now MG was the one he was worried about, he had unintentionally turned his best friend into a vampire and Stefan knew that MG was trying to stay strong for Ethan and pretend that everything was fine but Stefan knew that it had to be taking a toll on him. MG was a good kid but he already knew what it was like to have blood on his hands since he was a Ripper just like Stefan was and he knew that seeing his friend die like that couldn’t have been easy. He wasn’t sure whether there was anything else going on but the moment he saw MG sitting on the roof he knew that he needed to find out. “Hey,” he said, offering MG a small smile as he sat down next to him. “If you were Damon then I wouldn’t be surprised but you only do this when something is bothering you,” Stefan said gently. He had always tried to make sure that MG knew that he could talk to him about anything, the boy always seemed to have so much going on and Stefan really did feel for him. Now he had a new vampire to try and train while still worrying about everything that was going on with Ben’s father and it was a lot to say the least. As MG said that he was okay given everything that had happened but then said that he should be okay, Stefan’s expression softened. “Your best friend died with your blood in his system as is now a vampire, you’re allowed not to be okay,” he said gently. “I know you’re trying to keep it together for him and that’s understandable but you don’t have to do that with me,” he added. Seeing anyone die wasn’t easy but least of all when it was someone that you were so close to. Even before Ethan came to stay with them Stefan had known that the boy meant a lot to MG, it had been clear from the way he talked about him and Stefan had been glad that MG had found a friend like that. Stefan knew that he couldn’t judge MG for the fact that that friend happened to be human because a lot of the friends Stefan had now had been human when he arrived in town. It was one of those things. As MG spoke again, Stefan nodded. “Of course you can,” he confirmed, curious to know what was on MG’s mind. As he asked the question, Stefan thought about it for a moment. “I was terrified,” he said at last. “I never told you this but Bonnie’s Grams died helping me and Damon so for a while Bonnie hated me,” he began, knowing that it might help to give a little context. “It took us a while to get back to being friends and then when her dad was sick and she was staying with him we talked so often that something between us changed. I was so worried that she either wouldn’t feel the same or that I would end up losing her that I didn’t say anything. I also felt like I didn’t deserve anyone as good as her,” he admitted, knowing that it was probably about time that MG learned the full story. “It was Bonnie who told me how she felt about me and that gave me the courage to do the same. She’s still my best friend now but she’s also so much more than that so it worked out,” he added. “I know it’s scary to risk it all but one thing we both realised was that we would regret it more if we didn’t try. That’s what you have to try and figure out - could you live with keeping it to yourself. If things work out the way they should you’ve got a long life ahead of you MG, don’t make it a life full of regrets.”MILTON GREASLEY

I know what it's like to think of yourself as a monster
MG knew that Stefan definitely had a point there because someone like MG doesn't usually seclude themselves like that unless they have something bothering them and MG had a lot on his mind. The drink in his hand wasn't helping much, but it was easing some of the pressure off his shoulders so that was good. But, he was still worried about what he was going to do next and he knew that talking to Stefan would help. MG let his thumb trace over the rim as he listened to Stefan. "I know, it's just—" MG trailed off with a small frown tugging at his features. "It's hard, talking about something like that. It..." MG paused for a moment, his eyes lifting from the drink he had in his hand to look forward at the sunset. "It scares me." Realistically speaking, MG has crushed on a couple of girls before, but it never went beyond a fleeting crush. But what he feels for Ethan doesn't feel fleeting, it doesn't feel like something he could brush off or something that could change at any time. It felt permanent. It scared him because he didn't know what to make of it.
MG was quiet as he listened to Stefan answer his question. His brows quirked up and his expression shifted into one of surprise at Stefan's next words. "Seriously?" MG breathed out a soft 'wow' because he had no idea that something like that had happened because when he looks at Stefan and Bonnie, he can tell just how much they love each other and when Stefan explained that it had taken them a while to get back to being friends, he nodded his head in an understanding manner because that made a lot of sense. He was quiet and instead continued listening to Stefan and as he kept listening, he was starting to understand what Stefan was trying to tell him. It definitely comforted him to know that when their feelings for each other were finally spilled out, it didn't push them away from each other but pushed them closer to one another.
Stefan's next words were enough to make MG release a trembling breath because nothing sounded worse than a life full of regrets. MG knew that he had to be careful because Ethan had supernatural hearing now and he didn't want him to pick up on his confession before he could get the chance to tell him. "I don't have the best track record when it comes to relationships. The girl I liked killed me, and now I feel these... these things and it scares me. When I had him in my arms, dying, all I could think about was: I should tell him how I feel. I should stop being a coward. But before I knew it, it was already too late and now I'm too scared to say it again. Especially with Raziel still out there, still dead-set on killing all of us. He died because of me, Stefan. Because Raziel decided to punish me for being a vampire as if I had any choice in the matter. He just doesn't care if he hurts a completely innocent person. Just who knows what else he could do to Ethan to prove a point? Do I actually have any right to be this selfish? He could die again because of me. I keep thinking of maybe l—letting him go once he's got his powers under control. I could have Hope compel him and his family to leave Mystic Falls, that way he'd be away from Raziel and his followers, but just the thought alone makes me feel sick to my stomach. I don't know what to do." Ethan meant so much to him and just the thought of pushing him away like that made him feel sick to his stomach. He just wanted to keep him safe, but at the same time, he didn't want to leave him. But can he truly afford to be this selfish?

Stefan liked to think he knew the people in his life pretty well by this point and when it came to MG this was an obvious sign that he was struggling. It was only natural after everything that he had gone through but Stefan hated seeing MG in any kind of pain and right now he wasn’t himself. It would be far too easy to bottle everything up and try to ignore it and Stefan would be the first to admit that he was guilty of doing that himself sometimes but he didn’t want that for MG. He already had enough on his plate without adding ignoring how he was feeling to the mix. Stefan wanted better for the boy and he knew that he would help in any way that he could. “I get that but sometimes talking about these things helps,” Stefan said gently. He knew that he wouldn’t push if MG if he didn’t want to talk about it but he honestly hoped that it would help him figure a few things out. Stefan would be lying if he said that he wasn’t protective of MG, he wanted the boy to be happy but he also didn’t want him to get hurt so it was a case of trying to weigh up all the options and do the right thing. “Seriously,” Stefan confirmed. “She was so upset that she almost let Damon die when the town’s vampires were rounded up but she eventually decided to help us,” he explained. He didn’t blame Bonnie for it, she had still been grieving the loss of her Grams and Stefan would have been surprised if she hadn’t hesitated in helping them. “I didn’t think we’d ever get back to being friends but now we’re so much more than that,” he added. It had taken a lot of courage for Bonnie to tell him how she felt about him and that had given Stefan the courage to tell her how he felt as well. Now he didn’t even want to think about what would have happened if Bonnie hadn’t followed him back to the Boarding House that day because they life they had together now was one that he wouldn’t want to give up for anything in the world. It had been a risk, that much was true, but it was one that had definitely been worth taking. Stefan had suspected that there might be something more between MG and Ethan because he had seen the way that MG’s face lit up whenever he talked about him. It had been clear that the other boy meant a lot to him but Stefan hadn’t said anything because he had wanted to make sure that MG had the chance to figure things out in his own time. As it was it sounded like he had done and that was good in a way but it was definitely bad timing. All he could do was listen as MG explained what was going on inside his head and once he had finished, Stefan was quiet for a moment while he considered everything that MG had just said. “Liking someone is always scary, no matter who it is. Letting someone into your heart means giving them the opportunity to break it and that’s terrifying but believe me when I say that when it works out, there’s no feeling like it,” he said at last. Stefan had had his heart broken a number of times in the past but it had still been worth taking the risk with Bonnie and it had paid off. “As for Raziel, he’s psychotic. You had no control over becoming a vampire but you’re making the best of the hand life dealt you. I know you feel guilty about what happened to him but it wasn’t your fault. You can’t control what someone else does and from what I’ve seen, he doesn’t blame you,” he said gently. He knew firsthand that that didn’t always make the guilt lessen but it was the truth. “I really don’t think having Hope compel him to leave is a good idea,” he said, reaching over and giving MG’s shoulder a gentle squeeze. “Pushing people away can seem like the best thing to do sometimes but it will only make you miserable and you’re going to need to be on the top of your game when Raziel reappears. Can you honestly tell me that you won’t worry about him if he leaves town?” he asked as he looked over at MG. “Besides, he’s a vampire now which means that he’s a target just like the rest of us anyway, making him leave would only be prolonging things if we don’t manage to stop Raziel,” he added. “When something like this happens we need to take any chance at happiness we can get because tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. That doesn’t make you selfish,” he said gently. “I get that you want to protect him and maybe having him leave is the right decision but shouldn’t it be his to make?”MILTON GREASLEY

I know what it's like to think of yourself as a monster
MG nodded his head slowly at Stefan's comment when he told him that sometimes opening up and talking about those things helped and he really hoped that it would help him because it was almost driving him insane. "Okay..." MG replied in a quiet voice, finally putting his drink down, his arms now wrapping around his legs, not quite bringing them around his chest, but instead he grabbed his wrist after looping his arms around his legs. He was quiet as Stefan talked about what had happened with Bonnie, his eyes widened slightly as Stefan concluded the story. "Wow." He breathed out because he had absolutely no idea that something like that had actually happened. "I'm so glad it worked out in the end." MG could tell just how much Stefan and Bonnie loved each other and seeing the two of them together never failed to put a smile on MG's lips because he was glad that the two of them had each other.
MG nodded his head slowly because he knew that Stefan had a point there. It was terrifying to think about giving someone that sort of power over him but he had a feeling that he had already given Ethan that power when he started developing feelings for him. Feelings that he didn't quite know how to label. It sucked, didn't it? That when you're born into this life, you don't automatically receive a manual to help you process your feelings and find a perfect label for them. It would have been so much easier for him, but when has life ever been that easy? MG gnawed on his bottom lip as he allowed himself a couple of moments to think about Stefan's words before his attention drifted back to Stefan when he started talking about Raziel, letting out a hum in agreement with Stefan when he called the angel psychotic.
"It feels like it is, Stefan. If Ethan and I weren't friends, he'd be a human right now. He wouldn't have had to die." MG said with a small frown tugging at the corner of his lips as he spoke, his eyes relaxed on the view ahead of him. "He doesn't. He never held a grudge, not even for a second." Which only goes to show just how special Ethan was and how pure his heart was. MG thought about the possibility of having Hope compel Ethan and his family to leave town and each time, just the mere thought made him feel sick to his stomach. He had no idea what was right or wrong anymore. He was so worried that if Ethan stayed, something bad would happen to him again, and that time it would be permanent. MG shook his head slowly at Stefan's next words because he honestly can't imagine himself not worrying about Ethan when the distance between them grows. "I think I'd worry about him even more because I can't see him." MG admitted quietly with a small frown tugging at his features.
"I hate that damn angel." MG had never hated anyone as much as he hates that angel for ruining their lives like this. Ethan was an even bigger target now thanks to the angel's hatred toward all supernatural creatures. MG's expression shifted into something a little sadder at Stefan's next words before he glanced down at his hands as he subconsciously toyed with his daylight ring. "You really think that someone like me deserves this shot at happiness?" MG asked after a few moments of silence. "I know it's not my fault, but... Knowing me got him killed, Stefan. I can't even begin to imagine what being with me will do to him. What if it's safer for him to never know how I feel?" MG considered Stefan's question before he nodded his head. "It should. It feels wrong to just take away his choice like that. I still haven't..." MG trailed off for a moment.
"I still haven't told him about Raziel, or the fact that we're on the brink of an apocalypse. I still have so much to tell him. But once I do, I will give him the choice to stay or leave. It's not my choice to make on his behalf. What I feel for him, it's..." MG paused for a moment just to make sure that the conversation below hadn't stopped which would make it easier for Ethan's unpracticed senses to pick up on the conversation without meaning to, but he was relieved to hear them still talking and laughing. "It's unlike anything I ever felt for anyone before. He means so much to me, our friendship means a lot to me, but if he chooses to go, I'll let him. I'd much rather live with the pain of watching him leave than watching him die again. I just don't know when is a good time to tell him how I feel, Stefan."

Stefan’s friends knew everything that had happened during his time in Mystic Falls but the truth was that when it came to MG and others who had come into his life later then he had never really gone into detail about his past. For a long time he hadn’t thought that he and Bonnie would be anything more than friends but then they had become so much more than that and he hadn’t really thought too much about it after that first night. It was only now that he was trying to help MG that it all came flooding back and Stefan knew that telling him the truth might help. As MG said he was glad that it worked out in the end, Stefan couldn’t help but laugh. “That makes two of us, I can’t imagine my life without her,” he admitted. It was a scary thought considering that Bonnie was mortal but he knew that they had plenty of time ahead of them before they had to worry about that. Bonnie had already said that if there was a way for her to become immortal without losing her connection to her magic then she would do it and Stefan wasn’t giving up hope that there would be but he also knew that if there was then it needed to be Bonnie’s decision without him having any influence over it whatsoever so he hadn’t mentioned it since that night. It was different for MG, the person he liked was a vampire so he didn’t have to worry about any of that but Stefan knew that it was still scary letting someone in like that. He knew that some kids worried about coming out to their family but one thing Stefan had learned a long time ago was that it didn’t matter who a person loved so it didn’t change the way he looked at MG. The boy was still a son to him and that was never going to change. It didn’t look like MG was worried about that and for that Stefan was glad, he just seemed worried about Ethan and that was as it should be. “Perhaps but don’t forget that this is Mystic Falls, he could have stopped being human at any time,” he said gently. “I know you feel like you’re to blame but you’re not. From what you’ve told me about him and from what I’ve seen while he has been staying here, he wouldn’t have changed having you as a friend for anything. It’s always a risk for people when they know us, we can do our best to protect them but we can’t always,” he said, his eyes fixed on MG as he spoke. “I know how you feel, Caroline was turned into a vampire to get back at me and Elena. All you can do is be there for him and help him adjust.” That was all Stefan had been able to do for Caroline but now she was thriving and he was so happy for her. As MG said he would worry about Ethan more if he couldn’t see him, Stefan nodded. “I thought as much. All the more reason to keep him close if you can.”As MG said he hated Raziel, Stefan’s expression turned sympathetic. “I know you do, we all do,” he said gently. The angel was threatening to wipe them all from existence so he had to be stopped but right now that was proving to be much easier said than done. MG’s next words were enough to have Stefan frowning and he hooked a finger under MG’s chin and lifted his head gently so MG had to look at him. “Listen to me MG, you deserve this. You’ve been through so much and you’ve come through it the other side. So many people would have fallen apart or turned off their humanity a long time ago but you haven’t done that, you’re still you and you’re still fighting to protect not just the people you care about but the entire supernatural world. You’re one of the best people I’ve ever met,” Stefan assured him, meaning every word. “Maybe it would be safer for you not to tell him but then again maybe he’ll surprise you and tell you he feels the same. You’re stronger together, I’ve already seen that and telling him the truth might just bring you closer together.” Stefan really wanted it to work out for the two of them but he knew that the only way to find out would be for MG to tell Ethan how he felt. “From what I know about him he’ll decide to stay but it has to be his decision once he has all the facts,” Stefan nodded. Ethan had a family to think about as well and even though they were human, he might still think it would be safer to get them out of Mystic Falls and leave with them. Stefan suspected that Ethan would choose to stand by MG but only time would tell. “If you haven’t felt anything like this before then it sounds like you’ve found something pretty special,” he said as he reached over and gave MG’s shoulder a gentle squeeze. “You’ll know when the time is right, don’t worry.”MILTON GREASLEY
