here lies a toppled god, his fall was not a small one
Alex liked feeling helpful, like he was actually doing something with his time. Something that could benefit all of them. The new house needed a lot of care, but it wasn't beyond saving, so that was also a good thing because then, he would have absolutely no idea where to start. Plus, how could he complain when this very house brought all of them together? It was everything he needed and more. He had his family with him, Harmony included, of course. Just what else could he possibly ask for? He wanted to try and work on fixing whatever he could without relying too heavily on his magic and it worked, for the most part. But there were parts of the house where even the slightest force had the item cracking under his hand. Like now, for example.
He wasn't that strong by any means, but it just goes to show how the house was falling apart a little bit. It was definitely a good thing that Viktor had gotten the house when he did because if he had waited, the house would've turned into something else entirely. A rubble, more or less. Alex murmured a spell softly under his breath which then fixed the sink he'd been working on for the past god knows how long. He leaned back with a pleased smile on his lips before he reached to shut off the water. He stood to his full height not long after and began making his way to the kitchen next to fix the sink there since he felt pretty confident that he can fix any sink now.
But as he fumbled and grumbled under the sink for quite some time, he dropped the wrench and brushed his hair back with a huff falling from his lips. "Why so difficult?" Alex voiced his displeasure out loud before he picked up the wrench so that he can continue, though it was the sound of approaching footsteps that had him perk up and that movement alone had him hitting his head which tore a pained noise from him before he got his head out from underneath the sink to look at the owner of those footsteps. He smiled up at Viktor before offering him a nod of his head in the form of a greeting.
Things have been... tense, as of late. Though tense would be the biggest understatement of the year, but Alex was trying to keep a positive outlook on things because otherwise he would lose his mind. "Hi." Alex greeted, one hand lifting to soothe the brief throbbing he felt at the top of his head. "I was fixing sink. Leaky." Alex explained as if it wasn't obvious. "Are you okay?" Alex asked despite having a feeling that he already knew the answer to that question.

What was the point in curtains when the windows still leaked? Put up curtains (pretty apparently), rain pours down again and curtains get all damp. Smell moldy like the ones he’d stripped down this morning had. The sun had been muted by the dirt on the outside of the windows, but its beams had still caught the motes dancing in the air – hopefully dust and not mold. He would be fine, Aliz, Eniko and Tavi too, all would heal fast. Not Alex though, maybe not Harmony either. Better not to be sorry than safe. Dumping the curtains in a pile in the corner - oh, he’d burn them later if he could get away with it, maybe on the Alpha’s land, see how well his fancy house would stand up to that. – Viktor dusted off his hands. He threw the window open, listening to it rattle in the frame. Air the place out. Make it smell better.
The sheets on the bed already did, the bathroom, although there was still so much that needed to be done to it. They were spreading out through the house, possessions seeming to grow like the mold. Harmony’s things everywhere, the smell of them a balm every time. Like her.
Viktor felt the tension in his chest start to melt away as he scooted out through the window frame and onto the porch roof. He paused as the tiles creaked under his feet, his hands slowly going to the frame, like that would save him if it gave way. There would be a sharp crack, a rumble and then he would join Alex in the kitchen the quick way. Maybe Harmony would feel charitable enough to help clean him up afterwards. Maybe. Aliz would say ‘told you so’, but she had no foot to stand on right now.
As the sound stopped, Viktor slowly drew his hands back again. He scrubbed them over his face, carefully not to be too forceful, although he wanted to be. Scream up to the sky, throw things – again – what had happened in the woods hadn’t been helped by her stubborn, argumentative attitude, but it had been started by his and that put the guilt for what had happened to her squarely on his shoulders. They slumped, his head tilting back far enough so that he could see a sliver of the sky above the loose joints in the window frame – the sash box hanging a half inch away from the house. A few screws, maybe some replacement beading if that was too far gone, and that would be fixed. Aliz was not so easy.
Trying to push it from his mind, Viktor examined the window frame, pushing pieces back into place where possible, digging his thumb nail into the wood to see where it was soft. Things with Harmony had been easier since she had come back and they had both told the truth. He knew what she was, she knew that he loved her, he knew she loved him. It was like the universe couldn’t let him have it all at once. Something good in one hand, something bad had to smack into the other, like a hammer slamming down on his fingers. Sick pain and panic, not passing quickly enough.
Already calculating what was needed, he scrambled back inside. Maybe hitting things with a hammer for a while would get some of this out of his system. Viktor was already picturing the relief of it, the way his bones would sing with the hits as he hopped back through the window that would soon stop rattling every time the window blew. He strained to hear where Alex, where the others were on the property as he walked downstairs. Knowing Aliz she was as far away from him as she could get.
Alex’s mutter rolled out of the kitchen as he approached, the thud and groan in its wake. They had all learned from nagyapa, nagyanya too – how to fix things, to take care of it themselves. His lips curled in a faint smile in an echo of his brother’s. No matter how much tension was in the house, Alex was always the one smiling, the peacemaker, the wise one. ”Hi,” he murmured, crossing to the fridge – as rickety as the rest of the house, but full size and working – retrieving a soda and one for his little brother. ”Put on head,” he instructed him, lifting his chin towards his brother as he passed the can over. ”Everything in house leaky. Roof, sinks, windows. We float soon, like boat with all the animals.” Animals including the family.
Still frowning faintly, Viktor leaned against the counter next to his brother. The first sip from the can was bliss, cooling a throat that had felt hot and raw from the moment he’d seen the hybrid’s fangs tear into his sister. ”Okay? Who knows,” he muttered, glancing down at the can before looking up. ”Aliz, she talk to you more. She tell you anything? She won’t talk.” To him. Viktor thumped the can again his chest, knocking a sigh out of himself. If he spoke to her nicer, calmer, maybe it would be different, but it was almost like he was incapable of it when it came to his sister.

here lies a toppled god, his fall was not a small one
Alex reached to take the can of soda from his brother, offering him a small smile and quick nod of his head. "Köszönöm." Thank you. As instructed, Alex put the soda on his head and although it was cushioned by his head of hair and unruly curls, he just had to press harder than most to actually feel the coldness of the soda so that it could hopefully alleviate some of the throbbing that he felt from where he knocked his head. Alex looked around him for a moment, taking in the condition of the house before he let out a brief chuckle before shaking his head. "Have faith." Alex was thankful for nagyapa and nagyanya's teachings because thanks to them, he's able to fix quite a lot of things. It just may take him some time. "It look good soon." Alex added with a hopeful nod of his head following. "Worth the struggle. It's home." Alex added, his smile still evident on his lips as he spoke, still pressing the soda against his head.
His expression shifted into something a little more sympathetic when Viktor admitted that he wasn't sure he was okay. He turned his body a little bit to be able to face him better, his head tilted slightly to the side. "Talk to me." Alex wanted his brother to know that the option was on the table - he doesn't have to shoulder everything alone. It wasn't the kind of life that he wanted his brother to live. He was their Alpha, sure, but that doesn't mean that he needs to carry everything on his shoulders. "Easier to talk to Harmony?" His question wasn't full of envy or hatred, if anything, he'd understand. Harmony was an easy person to talk to. After he told her about his nightmares, it got easier for him and that topic alone wasn't an easy one to talk about since he didn't like it when people worried about him and he didn't want their attention to be fixed on him, but with Harmony, he didn't feel under the spotlight. If anything, it oddly felt like being embraced in a warm and protective hug. It was nice. He just hoped that it was the same for his brother too.
Alex gently shook his head, finally lowering his hand down to place the soda down. "No. I give her time." Alex said, his eyes slowly drifting away from his brother to fix his attention on the sink that he'd been trying to fix. "I know you care, and I am sure she knows, too." Alex licked his bottom lip for a moment before he gnawed on it for a few moments. "But, I think giving her the option to come to you first might be good." Alex nodded his head, his eyes relaxing on Viktor once again. "I know you worry, but... We know how Aliz is like. If she talk to me, I'll tell you. Meantime, breathe. You look tense. It'll do you no good. Might do you some good to release this tension somehow before you..." Alex made an explosion gesture with his hands, followed by a sound from his mouth as a little sound effect to really deliver the point. He just hoped that his brother would listen to him, but knowing the man, it was near impossible for him to pick himself first, wasn't it? The consequences of being an Alpha, he'd imagine. It can't be an easy job, taking care of everyone. Alex sympathized with him, he really did. It's why he tried his best to stay out of trouble to not make it even harder for him. He has enough to worry about already, doesn't he?

Viktor returned his brother’s nod as he passed over the can of soda and settled against the kitchen counter. Worn and rickety, like everything else in this place, but it still held his weight. All of them seemed to be carrying around some extra these days, mentally at least. As Alpha he should have been able to take it on his shoulders it. That was his job, but papa had just about started talking to him about all of that when the attack had come and what should’ve been ended up nothing but broken promises and dreams. Aliz and Alex weren’t kids anymore, but they were still too young for all that had happened to them. He was too young to have become Alpha, but he’d had no choice in that. He did have a choice in how much they had to handle and with Aliz he had definitely screwed that up.
Glad that Alex had listened to him and put the cold can against his head at least, Viktor took a deep gulp from his own. The house was a step up, at least, even if it meant living too close to the Alpha hybrid. ”Thanks to Harmony?” he huffed out, amusement creasing his face for a moment before the grim lines settled back in. ”You’re right. It’s home. Better than we had before.” And it would improve with time. Maybe the old man still planned to sell it when it was done, but if he could find some way to start earning money they could buy it from him.
He glanced down at his can, toying with the ring pull on the can. Despite them being more settled now, things between him and Aliz were still rocky. Their relationship had always been that way, but this time for worse. He’d refused to back down to the hybrid and his little sister had ended up paying the price for it. Viktor made a low sound of agreement in his throat, his gaze twitching back up to Alex. The corners of his mouth lifted in reassurance that he knew he could open up to him. Alex asking if it was easier for him to talk to Harmony had him laughing though. ”Maybe. Not always easy for us to talk. End up arguing. Same as with Aliz.” Although when he had needed to get things off of his chest, his fears, his grief, the memories that swum around in his head and brought tears to his eyes sometimes, Harmony had listened to him.
”She thinks I smother,” Viktor admitted tightly. In his defence it had been about keeping the pack safe rather than being the sort of asshole who didn’t believe women could handle things. He had seen the way Aliz had fought against the hybrid and his people, and the way that Harmony had taken down the hunters who had come for him, while he’d been useless, rolling around on the ground, bleeding and poisoned. His shoulders tensed at the memory, the can crumpling faintly in his grip. ”I try. She doesn’t come.” The sigh hissed out as he set the can aside. Like the metal, his lips crumpled faintly, something approaching a half smile. ”Knowing her, she not talk to anybody, she just go and try to kick Alpha ass.” And would pay for it. Surely Aliz knew better than to try and push those limits.
Catching the way Alex’s hands floated through the air as he made that exploding sound, Viktor snorted and tried to make his shoulders relax. ”Was going to hit windows and do that. Might bring house down though. Minden rozoga.” It was all rickety. The old man was going to be lucky to have any of the original house left at all when they were done. ”You want to hit things too? Aliz your twin. Close enough to feel too.” He lifted a hand and thumped it against his chest. Maybe it wasn’t like some people thought and the twins felt everything that happened to the other, but they were still close and had spent all the time isolated with just the family for company.

here lies a toppled god, his fall was not a small one
Alex nodded his head in agreement with Viktor because he was absolutely right about that. It was certainly better than what they had before. “This will be good.” He assured him in a soft voice, still keeping the soda on his head which was starting to throb a lot less now. A good sign, really. Alex was quiet as he listened to Viktor, slowly lowering his hand down when he no longer felt the need to keep it pressed against his skull, the lukewarm drink now between his hands instead which warmed the drink a lot faster. Alex released a small hum as he continued listening to Viktor. “You don't smother.” Alex disagreed with a shake of his head, a strand of hair momentarily covering his vision before he brushed it back. “You care. In your own way.” Alex assured, his eyes relaxed on his brother. “They get used to it.” He added a moment later before he twisted his upper body so he could lean to the side and put the soda down on the table top before he fixed his posture again and turned his attention to his brother. “I also think Harmony is not used to it.” Alex commented after a short pause. “Someone caring like you do.” He explained a moment later. “Maybe that's why she think you smother. She has good heart, though.”
“Stubborn, I know. But she needs time. To process. Can't be easy, being a vampire, too.” Alex could feel the intensity of his sister's emotions as if he was going through that change, too. He wished he could take it all from her but he can't. “I'll be there. To stop her.” Alex assured in a soft voice. He won't just stand on the sidelines as his sister risked her life just to get back at the original hybrid for what he had done to her even though she must know that he won't feel a single thing. He was, simply put, too strong. “Hopefully she talk to me soon. Don't want her bottling things up.”
“Oh.” Alex released a soft noise when he realized that Viktor had actually planned to do just that. He glanced over at the windows and their dire state before he looked over at his brother. “Risky, but...” At the same time, he knew it would do his brother some good to release all that tension. Viktor's next words brought Alex's attention back to him and his lips stretched into a small sad smile. He definitely felt it, not as strongly as Aliz was feeling it right now, but close enough that it made his chest feel so tight sometimes. “That's why I was fixing.” Alex revealed in a soft voice. “To distract myself.” Alex lifted his hand to massage his own shoulder to check if he had any tension collected there and he was not at all surprised to feel the tension there.
“Okay.” Alex said in a soft voice not long after. “Let's lay newspaper down first. Easier to clean up this way. Don't want glass everywhere.” Alex suggested, pushing away at last so he could do just that since he didn't want anyone to step on the shards and get hurt in the process. “Ready.” Alex announced moments later with a pleased smile on his lips. “I'm not good at hitting things.” But with the windows being made of glass, it would be easy for him to break them without applying too much strength — not like he had that much strength with how lanky he was, to begin with — so he just knew that he shouldn't stress too much about it.

Viktor’s head bobbed slowly in an echo of his brother’s nod. He had promised Harmony that this would be good for them. Somewhere safe for the pack, a home. What had happened with the Alpha had put a dark cloud over it all, but what had happened wouldn’t rob them of what this was supposed to be. Maybe Aliz wouldn’t feel the same, but she would understand in the end. It was better to stay here than to tear up the roots they had put down and run again, with no guarantee that the next place they tried would be any better than this one. The Alpha, well, that was something else they would deal with eventually.
Viktor’s smile didn’t last, but for a moment it was there, his brow’s rising above that smirk. ”Don’t smother you same way I do them,” he argued, but he was glad to hear that it wasn’t too much from someone in the middle of it. Frustration and a short temper always had him going further, cracking down harder than he planned to. ”Should be another way. Like nagyapa.” He hated comparing himself to his grandfather, or even their father, but he was the only Alpha he had known until that rohadék had appeared in the woods, trying to stamp his claim on their land and on his pack.
What was between him and Harmony had less to do with him being an Alpha and more to do with him truly seeing her. If her mother had deserved the title love might have been more familiar to Harmony. Viktor made a low sound of agreement in his throat. It had taken almost losing each other to wring the words out of them in the end. ”A better heart than she admit,” he agreed. ”I try to make sure she see now. She deserve love, someone to protect her.” He tried to tell her that as much as she would accept now, the dam had broken and the words were there on his tongue the moment he looked at her now.
It should have seemed that Harmony was the hardest one to get through, but that had always been Aliz. Their mother had always said they were too alike, stubborn, butting heads. Viktor didn’t know if that was the case, but it only took them minutes in each other’s company to have them clashing. ”Everything feels … bigger for her now,” he muttered, trying to verbalise what vampires were meant to be like. That just made the arguments bigger, meaning she needed Alex and the others more than ever. Lips pressed together, Viktor straightened up, looking down at a little brother who had always been wiser than his years. ”Jó testvér vagy.” A better brother than he was. Alex had a way of wringing what was wrong out of you and finding some way to make it better. Viktor nodded slowly, agreeing with his brother. Aliz needed to talk to somebody before the explosion came from her.
The comment about bringing the house down was supposed to be a joke, but for a moment it looked like his brother believed that he might just do that. Viktor managed to chuckle and shake his head as he extended a hand down to Alex to help him up. ”Be fine. Just messy maybe.” He knew better than to leave that for Harmony to find later. The sad smile that touched his brother’s lips knotted his gut up. Reaching out, he clapped his hand on Alex’s other shoulder, squeezing in a sign of support. ”We distract together, yes? Take minds off all of this…” He gestured with his other hand, encompassing the whole of the house, the people who would fill it with life later.
Thankfully, instead of going back to the leaking pipes, Alex agreed to help him out. Hitting things always got rid of frustration faster than a slow repair on something. ”Harmony cut foot, she cut me,” Viktor agreed, mock sighing. He helped get the newspapers in place, making sure they stretched far enough into the room. They would break from outside, the glass spilling in instead of out onto the roof.
He scrambled back out, offering Alex a hand so they ended up out there together, balanced on a roof that was thankfully taking his weight. One corner of Viktor’s mouth curled into a smile. ”Lucky for you, I am. Grip hammer careful,” he warned, demonstrating his grip on it before he tapped lightly at the corner of the bottom pane, the one that already had cracks running through it. For now they could replace it with a pane from one of the attic rooms. Tomorrow he would go into town with measurements to get fresh glass. ”You think frames can be saved?” he asked Alex, digging the claw hammer into a corner of the frame to reveal solid fresh wood beneath the weathered wood on top. He was sure that with a few fresh nails they could be, but he wanted Alex to absorb the knowledge that apa had passed on to him. .

here lies a toppled god, his fall was not a small one
Alex released a soft hum at that, knowing that he was a lot easier to deal with in comparison. Alex never made any trouble, always stayed within his set path, but he knew that he, too, had his own moments. But still, he didn't think that his brother was the type to smother. He cared, deeply so, and he had his own way of showing it. "I know, but still." Alex voiced out loud to make it known that he still didn't think that his brother was the smothering type. "I know. But, you different from nagyapa. You lead in your own way." Alex said in a soft voice. He knew that it would make a lot of things easier if Viktor were to be like nagyapa, but he wasn't. Alex felt a small smile form on his lips as he listened to his brother talk about Harmony. "You two good for each other." Alex voiced his own approval, his voice soft as he spoke. "Happy for you." Alex added and his expression showed that he meant each and every word.
Alex nodded his head slowly in agreement with his brother when he said that everything feels bigger for Aliz now. "It can't be easy. I know being wolf is challenging enough." Alex said with a soft sigh falling from his lips not long after. "I learn from you." Alex said with the same softness in the tone of his voice when Viktor called him a good brother. Most of the time he didn't feel like one, but he watched Viktor and learned from him. "Okay. We distract together." Alex agreed, knowing that it would do them both some good to distract each other like this.
Alex let out a chuckle at Viktor's next words. "Then we be extra careful." Alex promised with a smile remaining on his lips. With Viktor's help, he was out with him. He watched his demonstration, a small frown of concentration tugging at his features as he adjusted his grip on the hammer. "Okay." Alex flexed his hold for a moment before grabbing the hammer correctly. Alex began doing the same as his brother, carefully tapping at the corner, watching as the glass cracked with ease. It was simply too worn down. Viktor's question soon pulled his attention and he looked at the frame, remembering what apa had shown him before. "Can be, yes." Alex said upon looking at the state of the frames. "Fresh nails do the trick." Alex added a moment later with a small smile resting on his lips as if remembering what apa had taught him brought him great comfort. It did. "When you go and bring nails, I come with. To help." Alex promised, knowing they'd need to replace the glass and also get the nails to transform the home into something they could live in.

Yes, different to nagyapa, because nagyapa had instinctively known what to do. If there had been a time where he was fumbling around in the dark, feeling completely lost, then it had been so far back none of them could remember it. Even at the end nagyapa had been so sure that he was doing the right thing – he had been the one with the doubts that had tried to claw their way out through his heart. Viktor’s lips quirked up faintly at the corner. Where Aliz could tear him down about what he’d done wrong, Alex would always build him up. ”Hope it be right way some day.” When he’d learned from all those mistakes.
Learning from his mistakes with Harmony had felt like it would kill him. The burn of her touch in the closing wound in his side lingering after it had healed, the burn in his stomach, in his heart lasting far longer, feeling like it would entirely consume him before she’d come back. Alex had always been positive that she would, but he hadn’t known it until Harmony had walked into the room like she hadn’t been gone at all. ”Köszönöm.” Viktor said honestly. ”Make sure you remind if she asks.” Humour laced his voice, but he wasn’t really kidding. Out of all of his siblings – and Tazi too – Alex had been the one to embrace Harmony being with them first, and he knew that no matter what, his little brother would be the one to fight to keep her with them, to keep her safe, if anything happened to him. What had happened to Aliz had already brought the thought of that too close again.
If it had been him it would’ve been easier for them all. Maybe he would’ve wanted to retreat to lick his worms, but he could shoulder the burden. Instead Aliz had paid the price for his temper and now every shift for her felt a shift for him too. Viktor huffed out a brother, one that was faintly amused. ”You see all bad habit,” he argued lightly. His brother had seen the worst of what they were, but instead of being bitter about it, he’d handled that with the same tenderness and care, a heart far bigger than his own worn where everybody could see it. His own warmed at the compliment that slipped out of Alex. As they gathered themselves up, Viktor pulled his brother into a one armed hug, ruffling his hair lightly.
God forbid they leave another mess for Harmony to see. She would tell him they had to hire someone to clean again – still ridiculous when they each had two hands. Viktor winked at his brother, only feeling slightly apprehensive as he climbed out onto the roof with Alex. ”If can be,” Viktor agreed. He would be on his knees in their room afterwards, sweeping every inch multiple times. Better he get glass splinter than her. Same with Alex. Maybe it would be better to handle most of it himself, but having his brother as his side felt good.
When Alex had been in the kitchen with nagyanya and mama, he had usually been outside, working on the vehicles, keeping the generators going, learning at nagyapa’s elbow. Now he was trying to do the same with his brother, making sure that he could handle these things if he had to. Pride shone in Viktor’s eyes as he pulled the hammer free. ”Good,” he confirmed. ”Leave more money in pan for Harmony to decorate. She has list, long as leg.” Viktor puffed out his cheeks, only half playing at being exasperated. He grinned as he let the air out, carefully stretching up on his side to get rid of the top panes. ”You want to measure for glass? Tape in box.”” Viktor lifted his chin towards the tool box as more glass rained down. At this rate it wouldn’t take long to get the other window taken out too. They could maybe make it to town and back, and get the windows in before the light started to get bad later.

here lies a toppled god, his fall was not a small one
Alex's expression softened at his brother's words. "Too hard on yourself, like always." He chastised softly but he can't imagine that leading is an easy thing to do, especially when each one had a mind of their own and hated following orders except for Alex who disliked making things harder than they already are for his brother, so he always wordlessly followed orders, always stayed out of trouble because in his eyes, that was the least that he could do. "Already doing well." Alex added in a soft voice, his eyes relaxing on his brother once again. "We are just stubborn." He let out a chuckle because if they weren't so stubborn, they would've been a lot easier to deal with. If only. When his brother thanked him, Alex's lips stretched into a genuine smile before shaking his head as if to silently tell his brother that he doesn't need to thank him for anything. "I will." He replied with a grin tugging on his lips. They certainly butt heads, don't they? Alex had heard it enough times to know that for sure. But, he can also tell that they both love each other and that was all the reassurance he needed to know that they are going to be okay.
"I don't see it that way." Alex assured in a soft voice because no matter what, Viktor pushed through. No matter what, he never crumbled under the pressure of it all. Nothing about their life was easy but Viktor made Alex feel like it was. He made him feel like he has nothing to worry about. Like an Alpha should. Always shouldering all the burden alone despite Alex's protests that he's right here to help. "Never did." He added a moment later and when Viktor brought him into a hug and ruffled his hair, Alex let out a chuckle as he returned the hug with one of his own, eyes fluttering shut for a moment as the warmth of the hug surrounded him and reassured him before it was time for him to pull away.
Alex cringed slightly at the visual of a long list filled with things that he'd never even heard of before. "I'm afraid to look at it." Alex shook his head with a chuckle falling from his lips. "Okay." From the way he looked, it was obvious that he was trying his best not to act too excited. He moved toward the box, rummaging for a moment before he grabbed hold of the tape and began to carefully measure for glass, a hum leaving his lips as he went to work, making quite note of the measurements knowing that he wasn't really the type to forget easily. "What next?" Alex asked once he was done measuring for the glass. "I help you smash now?" Alex glanced at the remaining glass with an excited gleam in his eyes.

The faint smile he’d shot his brother turned wry before it vanished entirely. As a big brother it would have been his place to look out for his younger siblings, even if the mantle of Alpha had never made it to him. It was what you did – put family first, took the kicks for them. When the men had come to their village he’d failed to do that and the weight of that guilt had driven him on when it seemed as though he’d never find a place for his family to live safely again. It seemed that where it was his place to feel that burden, it was Alex’s to relieve him of it. The soft voice of reassurance and reason.
”That never change,” Viktor promised and that wasn’t a bad thing, no matter how much trouble it had gotten them into this time. Stubborn meant tenacious and that meant being able to hold on when everything looked like it would tear you apart. Aliz was as bad as he was and that meant she would be alright, if she allowed herself to be.
Aliz might not have seen it yet, but Harmony was good for them all. In those long weeks since his big mouth had caused the hybrid to turn Aliz she had been a rock for him, the one he drew close when he was roused from nightmares late at night with the image of Aliz’s neck snapping flashing bright between his eyes. Harmony wouldn’t have said many soft words about it, but by just being there, she was everything he needed. Love didn’t need words, not in situations like this.
Viktor made a dubious sound as Alex skated around his joking words. He wasn’t an arrogant man, he was one who knew he had made plenty of mistakes. The real trick now was learning from them, showing his siblings a good example. Maybe that was all that Alex had seen, shoving the rest of it aside. He basked in that feeling for a moment as he hugged Alex, then drew back with more of a grin than had been there before. ”Gonna take compliment,” he assured him. It wasn’t as though he heard many of them these days. When they came he’d wrap himself in them, the feeling a warmth in his chest now.
If they managed to get the windows entirely replaced in the master bedroom today, he’d feel the same warmth radiating from Harmony later. Compliments definitely didn’t come to her as easily as they did his little brother. It would just be one thing on the list Harmony had started making the moment he’d shown her the farmhouse, the rest coming in time. Viktor grunted in amusement, dipping towards a hip pocket like he had it sitting there. ”I have no choice,” he told him, patting a hand against his chest. ”Make house good though. She has…” He paused for a second, trying to recall the word he was sure Harmony had told him he didn’t have when they’d been arguing over what was going to be done. ”…taste. Make real home, not like shack.” He wouldn’t say not like their old home. No matter what Harmony would’ve called that, it had been far more than a rustic wooden box. It had been filled with life and love and laughter until those beasts had stamped it out.
For a time it had seemed as though all of that was gone for good, but no more. Viktor rapidly cleared the top panes, kicking the glass aside so that Alex could get his measurements made. He knew he could trust his brother to be accurate, if it had been Aliz or Tazi he’d have been checking their work. ”Now fun,” Viktor promised. ”We clear all glass then drive to town, buy new.” Hauling the shattered glass to the dump as they went. He wasn’t about to litter the gardens around the house with it, no matter how overgrown they were. With a smooth flick of his wrist, he flipped the hammer in the air and offered it to his little brother handle first. ”You help smash.” Hopefully as much as Alex had managed to take his mind off of his worries, he hoped he could do the same now. The Kovacs brothers working together again.
