The sheriff’s department vehicles had passed him just before he’d turned off of the road and onto the tracks that led deeper into the woods. Three patrol cars, the sheriff’s own truck following. They’d rolled out the big guns for whatever had supposedly happened out here last night, and rolled them away again just a couple of hours later. Even the local TV cameras that had been held on the side of the road had gone. Noah snorted faintly as he eased around a bend on the narrow track. They’d probably been the first to go, vanishing like smoke the moment they’d realised there wasn’t anything sensational enough for them there.
He'd watched the story over a bowl of cereal. Sprawled on the couch, thumbing up the volume on the remote so he could hear what the perky blonde was saying. A reported encounter with a suspected coyote or wolf last night. She’d gestured up the trail to where a hunter in an orange vest could just be seen shifting anxiously from foot to foot as he spoke to a deputy. A hunter. If he wasn’t just the sort who liked to hang trophies above his fireplace then he was taking a hell of a chance sticking around and advertising himself with the neon hunter’s gear. If something was out there looking to get revenge for its pack then he’d just made an easy target for himself.
There hadn’t been a moment’s hesitation after he’d put the bowl aside. Last night had been a full moon. Hunter of the supernatural or not, there was a good chance the guy involved had hit something that was far bigger than a coyote. Unsure whether or not the sheriff’s people would find a body, Noah had washed up the bowl and jumped in the shower. Forbes had been reluctant to talk with him on the few occasions he’d tried so far, but that didn’t mean he had to see her as a lost cause. There were still supes being killed in this town, good people who were just trying to live their lives here, and they were plenty of killings that happened the other way around too. For such a small town Mystic Falls had more than its fair share of murder and violence.
Last year some time he’d come out here the same way, following the trail left by the sheriff’s people and the strips of yellow hazard tape that had been strung through the woods when a woman’s body had been found. This time there was just a single vehicle left at the top of the slope when he reached it and angled off the trail into what he supposed was some sort of look-out spot. Noah climbed out, squinting at the sprawl of the town that was just visible through the trees here. They were probably only a handful of miles from the edges of it, close enough that wolves probably thought it was safe to run here on full moons.
Following the trail of footprints that were stamped into the earth, Noah started along the crest of the hill. If it hadn’t been a coyote out here last night – not the permanently four legged kind at least – the department might end up back out here later when a missing persons report came in. Some in the supernatural community wouldn’t bring the attention to themselves, but given that shifters turned back into their human form when they died, Noah imagined most would want something done for their lost loved one.
Barely a hundred yards into the woods he caught the flash of red hair amongst the trees. He angled towards them. Sure, he could’ve looked on his own, but if the sheriff’s department had some idea of the area where the kill had apparently happened, he was going to take advantage of the knowledge. ”Excuse me … hi,” Noah called out. His smile was automatically as he reached the clearing where the woman stood. ”I saw the car back there. Are you with the sheriff’s department?” The smile was friendly, his blue eyes crinkling at the corners, but he was looking her over as he spoke. If she was with the sheriff’s department then he hadn’t seen her with them before.

❝ There is Light & Darkness In Everything... There are Thorns on The Rose❞
This community Ariel had realized shortly after arrival was rife with supernatural. To the point that sometimes when she investigated it was occasionally hard to tell if it was natural wildlife or a pack of werewolves. Nevertheless, Faye’s boss sent her somewhere she went, if anything just out of her promise she had made years ago to Faye. She had tried to keep this promise as much as she could around her duties as an Angel: and she had not long completed her last orders to root out some angels to return them to heaven.
Now she was trudging through the woods of Mystic Falls, the night after the full moon, tracking. Hope that they weren’t any bodies this time, that unfortunate unsuspecting humans having a romantic stroll through the full moonlit woods…. Could soon turn deadly… Ariel through wryly to herself as she followed footprints, broken twigs as the packs had run last night.
Believing she was alone out here she had heard a twig snap from behind her and she whirled sharply, red hair falling into her face. She kept her face neutral looking at the human… or was he? Certainly, seemed that way, ” Hi…” She returned cautiously but still friendly. She blinked when he mentioned a car and she smiled a light laugh to her voice, ” Not me I’m afraid. I don’t drive.” Ariel told him. It wasn’t a complete lie but not the truth either. Faye could drive, the angel within couldn’t. Why drive when you could literally be in one breath in one place, then appear on the other side of the earth in the next? The only thing you had to be mindful of was people, someone suddenly appearing wasn’t normal.
Whoever this guy was asked if she was with the sheriff’s department and she shook her head, ” No. I’m an agent with the fish and wildlife service.” Ariel told him, patting her pockets for her badge, Faye’s badge, before showing it to him, ” Are you representing the town police?” She asked him curiously. Either way she didn’t really care, she had no authority to stop him wandering these woods.

After years of dealing with supernatural disagreements and troubles of all sort, he should’ve known not to judge on first sight. He had though. The assumption being that the woman was human, one of the sheriff’s people left behind to perhaps clean up the scene while the others had gone back to the station. Those close to the sheriff tended to be tight lipped about the things that went on in this town, not letting many outsiders in on the stranger side of things here. Noah had presumed that meant that some, at least, were hunters, perhaps even the sheriff herself, but there was always a chance that it was the other way around and they were hiding the truth here because they were the ones with something to lose if the wrong revelation had hunters swarming here en masse to stamp out the things that were killing innocents.
The hunter who’d been out here last night had been lucky that he’d lived to tell his story to the sheriff’s department. There were plenty who hadn’t been so fortunate and the comparison to little Red Riding Hood had played into his impression of an innocent young woman startling as he called out to her. Another foolish road to go down. There was a decent chance in this town that she was something far more powerful than a darach.
Noah had his hands up as though he could ward off that faint caution in her voice and assure her that he wasn’t someone to be afraid of. ”I guess we’re not the only ones still roaming around here then,” he tossed back lightly, although he was already questioning how she’d made it out here without a vehicle. The spot wasn’t exactly an easy stroll from town, especially at this time of the day.
At the mention of the fish and wildlife service, Noah was smiling ruefully, his head bobbing like he was admitting to having figured things out wrong. Considering that the guy had reported a wolf or coyote encounter it was no wonder that they had a wildlife agent here. It wasn’t likely she was going to find anything that was still running around covered in fur, but he imagined they took no chances. ”I should’ve guessed they’d send somebody eventually,” Noah admitted. ”I’m guessing that all the talk of wolves and coyotes piqued someone’s interest.” Unfortunately that hadn’t happened in New Orleans a couple of years ago when a pack there had torn themselves apart. New Orleans had a habit of keeping its supernatural incidents well out of the spotlight.
That secrecy had made his job harder when he’d finally managed to find some sort of trail away from what had happened back then. People didn’t want to speak out, especially when they were a part of that world. Noah’s gaze dropped to the badge in her hand before he was snorting and holding a hand up again. ”Me? Nope. I’m not official in any sort of way. I’m just an … interested party. I heard what had supposedly happened out here last night and came for a look. Did anybody figure out what it was that guy claimed he saw?” His parents had raised him on stories of all sorts of things, but his dad had also warned him constantly to only trust his own experiences, what he saw with his own eyes. People’s memories couldn’t always be relief on, especially when they’d been through something traumatic.
