❝ There is Light & Darkness In Everything... There are Thorns on The Rose❞
Ariel had lived life as Faye for many years now. Before Kara knew what she was she had used her powers in secret, when Kara wasn’t looking. She should have known better than to lie. That had led to years of building trust between her and her vessels best friend. She had never intended her place here to have taken so long. Sometimes she wondered if there was another vessel for her out there, to give Faye her life back, but there wasn’t. She had looked already. Faye remained asleep, safe and sound.
With order returning to Heaven, she had been asked to go and round up a few wayward Angels and return them. Some went willingly, missing their home, others needed persuading. She was able to do it with minimal bloodshed, as she hated fighting her own family. With the last one on her list sent back upstairs she was free to do as she pleased until Heaven needed her again. Until then keeping a low profile and living as she had been.
With Mystic Falls across the other side of the country, Ariel decided to fly. To the human eye it might appear more like teleporting, as she would just disappear and then reappear in the chosen location. Crossing the country for an angel took moments. Any other day she might have chosen to go the long way around, enjoying being in her sanctuary, nature bringing her such peace. Though she had promised Kara that she would be there as soon as she could. That didn’t give her any time to take a stroll through the countryside.
As she flew, she homed in on Kara’s energy, taking her toward a hotel room and she suddenly appeared in it, a flutter of wings her only arrival. She looked around her and couldn’t immediately see Kara as she came out of the bathroom. The red head smiled at the blonde, ” Hi Kara.” Learning to act like Faye had been a learning curve. There were still so many things about humanity that she just didn’t understand and probably never would regardless as to how long she spent as one.

There’d been a request for help – a scatter of farms in Illinois (she wasn’t about to call the handful of buildings stretching along a road a town) – suffering from animal attacks. Livestock had been found dead, at least two farmhands had rapidly followed. Frank’s progress had been stalled. Apologies had spilled from the phone as she’d made her way through the lobby of the Grey Haven. He’d still be there before the end of the month, hopefully before the end of the week. Kara flashed the now familiar woman at the front desk a tight smile before she continued past to the elevator. At the rate Frank was going her bank account would be bled dry before he even crossed into Virginia.
Kara slumped back against the wall of the elevator, looking up into the small lights that studded the ceiling as it rose. She’d made it all of a week back at the motel before she’d left again, trying to convince herself it was the convenience of the Grey Haven that had her coming back, not the extra escape it provided from the threat of Virgil.
’He’s out of town on personal business. Can I take a name? A message?’ Kara wasn’t sure that the assistant at the BCA had translated the mumbled words she managed before she’d put the phone down. Maybe it was better not knowing that Virgil was probably still in Mystic Falls, for her peace of mind at least. As soon as Frank was here she could make sure that she wasn’t, but she was caught in that trap still, ready to gnaw her leg off to get away from it.
She probably left a trail of grit and dust behind as she reached her floor and made her way down the end of the hallway and what she was sure was the absolute cheapest room in the place – which was still a dozen steps up on what she’d had at the motel. A double, with a bathroom that was still half the size of her apartment in Minnesota. By now Roberto had probably finished killing the plants he was meant to be watering for her and had moved on to sleeping on her sofa and running up her electricity bill by watching the game on the TV that she’d bought during her marriage, and had gotten her brothers to help load up in the truck when she’d cleared her stuff out of their apartment.
There was one here, tucked discretely into a unit at the bottom of the bed, of course. It was as blank as it had been when she’d moved into the room with a monthly rate agreed in advance. Kara didn’t even glance at it now. She dropped her purse on the end of the bed, kicked off her shoes and trailed towards the shower. The farm they’d gone digging around today, supposedly in search of a pair of missing teenagers (ones that supposedly might have been attracted by the pair of horses that were still grazing on the land). They’d found nothing but dust and spiderwebs, giant ones that she was sure still clung to her hair.
At least the hot water didn’t run out here. She could spend twenty minutes in that huge shower, letting the hot water drive the disappointment out of her. She was back to feeling mildly apathetic about the whole thing by the time she emerged. With the towel tucked around herself, she padded back towards the bedroom, and had to bite back a scream when she saw the figure standing in the middle of it. ”Jesus,”{/b] Kara muttered, clutching at her towel. She puffed out a breath, glad that Faye hadn’t given her a heart attack. ”What are you doing here? I just spoke to Frank. He said you were all still caught up in something. I wasn’t expecting…” This. She gestured at her friend and team mate as though that would explain everything. The staff here were well aware that she was worried about people finding out where she was staying, she’d been promised discretion, and that usually would’ve meant someone letting her know if a guest had arrived (the conventional way).

❝ There is Light & Darkness In Everything... There are Thorns on The Rose❞
Angelic duties for now were finished with. She need only return to her life as Faye and await new orders. Few angels were on earth, the majority being called to return to heaven. Those had been her orders, to return the angels who hadn’t answered their summons, to heaven. Sometimes she missed heaven, some peoples sense of paradise was so interesting. But she was the Angel of Nature, she was set to protect what God had created and she took that duty seriously.
Sometimes she stumbled as a human, but she had managed. Back when it was critical to remain hidden, during the apocalypse. Since she wasn’t on the side of helping raise Lucifer from Hell. That made her an enemy in her brothers and sisters’ eyes. With all the archangels dead or gone, locked away or otherwise, this was the best heaven had been. But now with Lucifer roaming free again… she didn’t know how long it would last.
With her business wrapped up she had ‘flown’ from where she had been straight to join up with Kara in Mystic Falls. Homing in on her energy, as she had many others. Unless they were hidden from her that is. She hadn’t shared that with Kara yet, no need for her to be hidden. She had no angelic enemies. When she appeared in a hotel room she briefly took in her surroundings and then Kara was coming out of the door and she smiled hiding her laughter as she scared her a bit, ” Sorry. Are you not used my sudden appearances yet?” Ariel joked a little.
When she asked what she was doing here. Frank their boss she had been keeping up to date, ” I just finished. Though I did tell him at the start of the week that I would be a little while more. It was easier than I thought it would be.” Ariel answered keeping what she said vague. In someways this was what she didn’t know couldn’t hurt. Best to try and keep her out of angel business as much as she could.

At eighteen she’d presumed that eventually she would get used to the voices, finding some sort of balance with them that meant she wouldn’t lose all control every time they struck. By the time she was married and slipping out of the their bed it had seemed like it was never going to happen for her. Kara had considered herself lucky that Virgil was a deep sleeper, when he was awake he would follow her without complaint, backing her up when the awkward questions over how she’d stumbled into a situation hit. Maybe she’d been wrong to trust that he hadn’t seen anything suspicious in it all – after all, your wife leaving your bed in the middle of the night was one hell of an excuse to bring someone else into that bed when she wasn’t there.
It had grown no easier since. Sometimes it felt as though control was right there beyond her fingertips, but then she’d be caught up in a bad one and all faith would disappear. Coming to a half dozen miles from where she’d started with no clue of how she got there still making her blood run cold. One of these days it felt as though whatever continued to hand out lives when her original 9 had probably run out already would take it all back. Then she’d need back up and while Frank and the others had been hundreds of miles away from her it had felt like she’d had none.
The doubts had been swirling around in the shower with the dirty water. Virgil’s appearance here had just added to them and God she hated it. That fragile feeling had never sat well with her. As a teenager she’d felt untouchable, but now everything chipped away at that confidence. Walking out of the bathroom to find Faye standing right in the middle of it was almost enough to shatter everything – if she’d screamed instead of just muttering a curse the glittering exterior of the hotel might’ve ended up raining down on the square in murderous little shards.
Kara laughed breathlessly, rearranging the knot of the towel to make sure it wasn’t gonna unravel around her. At least Faye had arrived in here and not in the bathroom while she was still in the shower. She had to consider how lucky she’d been on a possible sliding scale of embarrassment here. ”I’d say definitely not,” Kara drawled lightly. ”There are these things called cell phones, you know. I’m sure you’ve still got the one Frank gave you. How about next time you give me a little warning?” Gesturing towards where her own phone still lay on the bed after she’d tossed it down at the end of the frustrating phone call, Kara snorted faintly. Angels might have done things a different way, but the thing that was in Faye was gonna have to learn how to tread on both sides of things if she wanted to avoid causing hysteria every time she arrived.
Considering that she wandered away without a word of warning sometimes, Kara knew she didn’t have much of a leg to stand on, but at least the fastest she could go then was the top speed of whatever vehicle she might’ve been in, there really wasn’t much of a comparison. She crossed towards the closet – which was about the same size as her bathroom back home, despite it just being intended for short stays. Her lips pressed together at the shiver that ran down her spine. Kara looked over her shoulder at Faye as she opened the closest and started pulling out sweats. ”So you weren’t with him? I thought that you were all together.” Only she’d obviously missed something in the brief updates she’d been getting from everybody. ”You weren’t in Illinois, you were doing some … angel stuff.” There was no question in her tone. She might’ve been blind to most of what was going on with her team, but she could still read between the lines on occasion.

❝ There is Light & Darkness In Everything... There are Thorns on The Rose❞
Ariel had shown up in Mystic Falls, following her friend. At least it was the friend of the body she was currently inhabiting. It had been a promise she had made to Faye a while ago. That she wouldn’t abandon her life completely… that she would try and live in it. At least until the day that her work in this realm was over… and she could return home.
When she arrived, she had popped into a hotel room, a stream of running water her indication that someone was in the shower. She barely had a moment to move before the water shut off and someone stepped from the bathroom. Her friend Kara. She smiled at her speaking a gentle greeting which only served to scare her and amuse Ariel. Her amusement was evident with a little smirk on her face. She chuckled only a little, ” Even if I had warned you, with a phone call you might not have heard it…” She gestured to the running shower water, ” Also where would the fun be? Keeping you on your toes.” Occasionally the ways of humanity were still lost on her.
She had managed to get by, for a time when she was in hiding. Hiding from the host because she, like a few others, rebelled. Rebelled against the plan for Lucifer and Michael to go to war. To burn down the world, the earth she was made to protect and serve as much as she had been made to serve God. Ariel stepped out of the way to allow Kara to get to her closet to get dressed after her shower, ” I’ll let you get dressed…” Ariel stated, and she was about to a door.
Kara then asked that she wasn’t with Frank their boss. She smiled a little back at her friend. Pushed her tongue against her the back of her teeth, ” I was to begin with.” Ariel told her. She had sworn a long time ago there would be no secrets between them, since the night of The Fall, ” But yes… I moved on from Illinois. Angel stuff as you put it. Some of us are being called back upstiars. I was charged in tracking some of them down and returning them. Willingly or not.” Ariel answered her. Some had gone willingly… others didn’t. Some she had managed to drag back kicking and screaming, others she hadn’t… and they hadn’t been so lucky.

No matter how many times it happened, how many times it would continue to given what had happened to Faye, Kara was still gonna hate being caught unaware. It was too close to what had continued to happen periodically in her life since she’d screamed over that first body. Maybe the next time she’d grit her teeth, bear it a little better, but she’d never be happy with the fact that Faye – Ariel – could just show up where she lived, whenever she liked. She had to try holding on to the good of her being there and not consider that it could’ve been practically anyone slipping in here without her noticing.
Kara brushed wet hair back from her face, lifting her chin almost imperiously. ”If you’d have waited until I answered it…” she reminded her. Which might’ve been another half hour. Even without factoring what they were into the equation, they were still government agents and she needed to be a little more mindful of being available twenty-four seven instead of continuing to juggle all of this alone in Mystic Falls. ”Preparing to give me a heart attack more like,” Kara muttered, although she was half smirking back now. Virgil had done that once upon a time – keeping her on her toes. Maybe by the time she’d joined Frank’s team she really had been looking for someone to do that again. Pushing her to be the best she could be, supporting her when she needed a partner. Beneath all the grumbling, she was honestly grateful that someone was here finally.
Not imagining they’d be heading out anywhere tonight – not when they could order in – Kara got out sweats. She glanced at the angel as she went to walk out and give her some privacy. ”Stay,” she told her. She retreated into the bathroom instead, leaving the door open so they could continue to talk while she dragged on clothes. Damn it. Kara tried to stop the sigh that wanted to slip out as her coworker made it clear that she was here on her own. ”So he’s still not gonna be here any time soon. I guess I shouldn’t complain, the team’s doubled in size here at least.” Still, it was a delay to her getting out of this town, There was no way she’d leave Faye here alone, even if she had been for over a year now.
The frown was back on Kara’s face as she stepped back out. If Heaven could recall her at any time it might not be the two of them down here for too long. Frank would probably freak the hell out too. So you’re just sending them back, not going back yourself? Sounds like a rough job. People don’t always like being ordered home.” She would’ve fought it tooth and nail right after she’d seen Virgil here. There’d been a time when he’d known her better than anybody else, that meant he would have anticipated that she’d run right back to her family when life got tough. ”What happens if they don’t want to go?” She studied her friend’s face. On the job they’d have used force, but this had to be different. It was hard to imagine angels using force, even on their own kind.
